"The increased costs of underground mining have continually challenged engineers to identify opportunities for alternatives to common approaches to underground development. Considerations to the design of horizontal and vertical development at the Dugald River mine targeted inclined raise boring to reduce horizontal development, not only to reduce cost, but to allow development activities to focus on other areas of the mine.The mine plan consists of 50 raise bored ventilation shafts, of which 17 have been mined to date with diameters ranging from 3.1 m to 5 m and lengths from 30 m to 200 m. The expected performance and stability of these shafts has been determined using methodologies proposed by McCracken and Stacey (1989) and further refined by Peck, Coombes and Lee (2011). Actual raise performances have been collated and compared to a database of raise bore performances across Australia as presented by Coombes, Lee and Peck (2011), and form a database of raise bore performance specific to Dugald River.Opportunities to further optimise the mine plan and reduce costs have seen the introduction of large diameter-inclined raise bored ventilation shafts to minimise the required lateral development to connect the ventilation circuits. Large diameter inclined shafts ranging between 3.1 m and 4.5 m in diameter have been successfully mined with dips down to 70°, reducing the cost of lateral development by more than $1 million over the next two years.Both technical and operational challenges were overcome in the mining of large diameter-inclined raise bores, including modification of: existing methodologies of assessing shaft wall stability for inclined raises. These included variations of the McCracken and Stacey method and the utilisation of the modified stability number (N’) previously developed for stope performance (Potvin, 1988). both the collar and toe development profiles, including the general set-up of the raise bore drill rig to reduce the operational risks associated with angled raises.Due to their success, inclined raises have been designed for subsequent stages of the life-of-mine ventilation system at Dugald River. The early miners and their mules always had the challenge of transporting unstable dynamite underground. The modern pumpable explosives, whilst far safer, still present a major logistics challenge for the mobile charging units (MCU). The challenge today is the efficient explosive delivery into declines, ramps, and vertical shafts, often requiring the MCUs to travel excess distances up and down to surface to re-load. Alternatively, the management of cassettes or ISO containers is utilized to deliver the pumpable base emulsion to the MCUs at the working face. Additionally, local laws and regulations regarding shaft clearance further compound the task and result in pausing other operations in the shaft or decline or ramp until the completion of the explosive transport. This paper examines the research & development challenges of dropping base emulsion down a vertical pipe to depths in excess of 1000 m (3280 ft.), either to an underground storage or directly into the MCU, depending on the depth. The boreholes (with pipes) are drilled in close proximity to the underground work areas. The paper also discusses the rheology of the emulsion within these vertical pipes as well as the economic benefits of such an innovative system. The learnings gained from this work, along with examples demonstrating the significant reduction in MCU travel and the safety benefits, are presented for the industry to consider moving forward.

Initial planning called for 3 separate drop shafts and 3 separate vent shafts to be pulled back from the excavated tunnel with a large diameter raise bore machine. With time constraints and the raise bore machine already in high demand on other shafts, a more “traditional” drill and blast approach was taken on a few of the larger drop shafts. This decision proved to be not only cost effective, but also reduced schedule impact as the shafts were excavated simultaneously with the other raise bores.

With the increased use of mechanized rock excavation, there have been developed internationally a number of methods to assess the abrasivity of rock materials. These methods range from determination of abrasive and hard mineral content using petrographic thin section analysis to weight loss or rate of wear flat development on specified test pieces. The Cerchar abrasivity index (CAI) test has been widely accepted for the assessment of rock abrasiveness and is determined as the abrasion of a steel pin after scratching over the freshly-broken or saw-cut surface of a rock. Two types of testing devices are in use today: (i) the original ‘Cerchar apparatus’, and (ii) the ‘West apparatus’, which was adopted herein. The CAI is calculated from the measured diameter of the resulting wear flat on the steel pin after 10mm scratching. This test has been considered to provide a reliable indication of rock abrasiveness for isotropic rocks. However, a great amount of rocks in natureis anisotropic. Phyllite is an anisotropic and foliated metamorphic rock and various types of phyllite specimens were tested in this research. Although phyllite is a type of rock primarily composed of quartz and the expected CAI value can be high, mechanical cutting of this rock should not be very problematic compared with igneous rocks have same CAI value. As phyllite is a foliated metamorphic rock, most of the specimens split into sheets through the quartz seam by the tip during scratching normal to the axis of quartz seams. Hence, viability assessment of Cerchar abrasivity test and F-Schimazek index values for the anisotropic rocks is investigated in this research.

It had been more than a decade since this many booths were occupied at an SME Annual Meeting, but at the 2010 meeting in Phoenix, AZ 630 booths were sold to 470 vendors from the entire spectrum of the mining and minerals industry. Exhibitors such as Metso, FLSmidth, West-Tech, ABB, NIOSH, Eriez and Resource West took their usual prominent places on the exhibit floor and were joined by newcomers such as tunnel boring machine manufacturer Herrenknecht AG, Frontier Kemper, the International Society of Explosive Engineers and more than 100 other first-time exhibitors. On the floor, one could find everything from a new pair of boots to a new career in the recruitment pavilion where some of the biggest companies in mining (Barrick Gold, Freeport-McMoRan, Newmont Mining, etc..) set up shop. The following is a look at some of the companies and products that were on display at the 2010 meeting. This paper describes a very exacting tunneling project. Planning and technical realization of this service and transportation tunnel was especially difficult as a matter of vibration control, because the tunnel is situated only a few meters under Maria Hospital, which is one of the most busiest hospitals in Helsinki. In this hospital there are many departments for bedpatients, research and treatment with high-tech equipment, operational surgery and a big laboratory. Besides access tunnels are situated near several apartment buildings. The functionality of the tunnel required the placement of the access tunnels to be straight towards these apartment buildings for which special care for blast induced air pressure had to be taken.

The Enaex Mining Technical Solutions (EMTS) team, in partnership with the Anglo American Iron Ore Brazil drilling and blasting team, has developed a study aiming to optimize the blast design applied at the Minas-Rio project. The study consists of modeling the dynamic behavior of one lithological domain to determine the best configuration of drilling pattern, charge configuration, timing and sequencing of the blast designs applied at the mine in this particular rock. The first stage of the study was the recognition of the rock blast process in question, assessing key parameters that characterize this whole operation: geomechanical characteristics of the rock mass, implementation quality for drilling pattern and explosives charging (collar position, hole depth, explosive charge length and stemming size) and recognition of current blast designs. The central element of this study was the creation of a vibration attenuation and seed wave model which has allowed the characterization of this particular rock mass present in a region determined by the Minas-Rio team. The model is based on a near field vibration test, constituting a powerful tool in the design of blast parameters. The blast design developed from the damage model simulations basically modified the timing and sequencing. The aim of this study was to improve the fragmentation resulted by the blasting, considering the particle size requirements demanded by the primary crusher and to increase the productivity of the loading and hauling operations. The results were analyzed considering the effective productivity of the two different fleet types of shovels, where the authors have analyzed more than 46000 values of productivity from September 2017 to August 2018, taken from the Dispatch system. A significant increase in effective productivity of these load equipment was observed, 7% to the PC4000 fleet and 2% to the PC5500 fleet, values supported by statistical parameters and hypothesis tests.

In open pit blasting, energy is released and transmitted through the geology. Negative effects can impact operations and can affect mine production. This paper presents recommendations for blast design to prevent damage due to ground motion from blasting on adjacent concrete structures of underground operations. It includes a case study describing a problem regarding an open pit mine expansion and asks whether production blasting will damage concrete shaft structures due to blast stress waves and blast-induced ground motion.

Some negative effects can have significant impacts on mining operations and adversely affect mine production. This technical paper presents recommendations for blast design to prevent damage due to ground motion from blasting on adjacent concrete structures of underground operations. The paper includes a case study describing a problem regarding an open pit mine expansion and asks whether production blasting will damage concrete shaft structures due to blast stress waves and blastinduced ground motion. Based on the results, a set of criteria is provided to implement in current and future mining operations that involve blasting near underground concrete structures. A set of techniques on how to improve vibration levels for safe operations is also presented. Knowledge of particle velocity and wave propagation for site-specific circumstances to determine a safe level of vibration is recommended. Emphasis is placed on making use of electronic detonators and early delay detonators to achieve successful levels of vibration. A dynamic analysis is necessary to determine if vibration from blasting can damage the concrete shaft structure. When reinforced concrete structures are subject to blast loading, both concrete and steel are subject to very high strain rates. As opposed to static loads, when subject to high strain rate loads these materials increase their strength significantly. In fact, they increase by more than 50% for reinforcing steel, by more than 100% for concrete in compression, and by more than 600% for concrete in tension. This finding is of significant importance in mining operations because it allows an increase in flexural capacity of individual members as a result of high strain rates. Therefore, an elevated ground vibration (PPV) or particle velocity is permissible when blasting takes place near concrete structures.

The paper is part of the ongoing work of the Environmental committee of EFEE. To assist the European experts working with explosives one of the aims is to improve the common knowledge of similarities and differences between national legislation, standards or guidelines on vibration monitoring and other environmental monitoring during blasting in Europe and abroad. This has been done by use of an online survey through the most of 2018. Questions have been raised on vibration monitoring during blasting. The existence of norms, guidelines or standards and how they are used. Even though the questions have been kept at a high level they are formed to try to map the different national standards use of such things as frequency, guidance on monitoring position, distinction between different types of structures, requirement to the equipment and more. Furthermore a few initial questions have been raised on other environmental monitoring relevant for blasting. The respondents are national, cooperate or individual members of EFEE. The answers are experts in the use of explosives and vibration-monitoring in their respective countries. More than 60 have answered the questionnaire from 29 different countries. Mainly European as well as other nations including India, Israel, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, UAE, USA, Greenland and Hong Kong. By analysing the incoming answers, the differences and similarities in vibration monitoring of the respondents has been clarified and mapped. Where possible other environmental monitoring has also been analysed. Where needed the different guidelines, standards and regulations have been visited to verify the answers and further elaborate on the comparison.

As drilling and blasting is carried out in an urban tunnel, which is adjacent to an existing building or structure, the balance between blasting-induced vibration reduction and drivage efficiency is a most important issue that must be resolved properly. Therefore, a new cut blast method named Stepped V-cut millisecond blasting (SV-cut) was developed by optimizing the most common used Vertical V-cut blasting method (V-cut). The most significant features of SV-cut lie in the utilization of sublevel interval charging structure and millisecond delay blasting technology in cut hole and the cut-cavity formed from outside to inside sequentially. SV-cut provides advantages of high borehole using ratio, low vibration level, and satisfied advance per attack. Based on the principal of millisecond blasting, the rock fragmentation process and the vibration reduction mechanism of SV-cut are analyzed. Determining methods of blasting parameters, which do have significant effect on vibration intensity and cut-cavity formed quality, are proposed according to the forming requirement of both outer and inner cut-cavity and vibration reduction. In order to compare the performance between SV-cut and V-cut, field blasting experiments were performed in the blasting engineering of Yamalike twin-arc tunnel, which closely passes over aged parallel tunnels. Blasting results show that SV-cut blasting is proven as an effective tunnel blasting method for both increasing blasting effects and decreasing blasting vibration. Comparing SV-cut with V-cut, the SV-cut can increase blasting drivage about 8.5% and reduce the vibration intensity induced by cut hole blasting 30% at least.

"1. THE VICTORIA STATION TRANSPORT HUB Victoria Underground station is part of the Victoria transport hub, which comprises one of London’s main train termini and a major bus station. At the Underground station, the District Line running in the older shallow brick tunnels dating back to 1868 cross the Victoria Line running in the lower tunnels, which were opened in 1969. After Waterloo, Oxford Circus and King’s Cross/St. Pancras Tube stations, Victoria is the most frequented station on the London Underground network and is used by over 80 million passengers per year. Capacity at Victoria Tube station has been inadequate for many years with passenger numbers steadily rising. Overcrowding is a constant challenge and the station has to be closed regularly during morning and evening peaks until sufficient trains pass through to clear the platforms. For this reason an extension has been debated since the 1990s. After intensive preliminary investigations and feasibility studies covering many variants, which included a large-scale jet grouting test to determine the applicability of this technology as a protective measure for the tunnelling works, the project was officially started with the Victoria Station Transport and Works Act Order (Secretary of State, 2009) effective on the 18th of September 2009. Following a competitive tender process a joint venture of Taylor Woodrow and BAM Nuttall were awarded the contract by London Underground, with their design being carried out by Mott MacDonald Ltd. Ensuring the busy station remained open to the public was a key requirement of the Victoria Station Upgrade. Jet grouting works, which were executed from ground surface, were also carried out while the station was fully operational 2. OVERVIEW The Victoria Station Upgrade aims to increase the capacity of the Underground station significantly and one of its major design objectives is to optimise the transfer between the Underground lines. In order to achieve this, the following new structures are currently under construction: •,A new North Ticket Hall •,Extension of the existing South Ticket Hall •,Nine new escalators •,Connecting tunnels between the North and the South Ticket Hall •,8 new lifts providing step free access to all platforms •,An improved connection between the rail/bus terminus and the Underground station As the elevation and geometry of the existing structures cannot be changed, the new structures need to be adapted to the existing structures (see Figure 1)."

5 miles of soft ground tunnel excavation for the SAWS W‑6 project finished months early despite difficult conditions. Success was achieved using TBMs and other equipment built long before most of the crew was even born. The old school means and methods easily adapted to the conditions encountered and were key to the project’s success. Unfortunately, an industry trend is to specify more “advanced” equipment which can sacrifice adaptability or productivity for a perceived reduction in risk. This case history discusses when traditional methods may be the best option.

Blast violence has always been a criteria that has been analyzed without a quantitative approach relying on opinions of those viewing the blast and oftentimes does not transfer between open-pit mines, quarries, and construction projects. Added to this confusion is that on many regulate projects, such as U.S. Army Corp of Engineers construction projects, the definition of "flyrock" or violence can vary, and contractors must be able to meet this requirement. This project analyzed hundreds of blasts from various construction projects to develop a new metric to determine blast violence - the Violence Factor. If a blast is fired using 1.25" (32 mm) diameter product and a 10-foot (3 m) bench, vertical uplift of 60 feet (18.3 m) would be considered extreme and violent by any professional in the industry. However, a 100-foot-high (30.5 m) bench using 12" (305 mm) bulk product, having a vertical displacement of 60 feet(18.3 m)might be considered typical or non-worrisome. This is where violence factor is beneficial as itprovides a system of scaling the violence of a blast based on the bench height to give manager a keyperformance indicator (KPI) which is easy to monitor and can provide a large amount of information onsite-specific design variables for their performance on blasting and the end-results of the blast. The Violence Factor of a blast is an integer which is scaled to determine how high vertical uplift of a blast is compared to the bench height. This project analyzed numerous blasts to determine what blast design variables contribute to violence. This violence has also been shown to occur when a non-optimal breakage mechanism, cratering, occurs and the design criteria that lead to this cratering. Finally, this paper will present typical results of various levels of violence including backbreak, fragmentation, and muckpile configuration.
