"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mining substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve material resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting those industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non Bureau publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue describes reports and articles published during the period January 1, 1975, to December 31, 1979. Tunnel sealing experiment (TSX) was conducted between 1997 and 2004 in the Canadian URL located in Manitoba. In the experiment, a tunnel was excavated parallel to the maximum principal stress direction, filled with sand and sealed with bulkheads at both ends. It was then pressurized and heated by injecting hot water. The rock mass response was monitored with seismic methods. The main interest in the numerical simulation was the damage formed during the heating phase. The large-scale PFC2D models replicated a central plane- strain section of the TSX chamber. The models captured the first-order phenomena observed in-situ displaying the difference in the damage in the roof and floor regions, respectively. This difference was due to the filling material confinement of about 100 kPa on the tunnel floor, which occurred in the course of the heated experiment.

IN the last book I have explained the methods of delimiting- the meers along each kind of vein, and the duties of mine officials. In this book1 I will in like manner explain the principles of underground mining and the art of surveying. First then, I will proceed to deal with those matters which pertain to the former heading, since both the subject and methodical arrangement require it. And so I will describe first of all the digging of shafts, tunnels, and drifts on venae profundae; next I will discuss the good indications shown by canales2, by the materials which are dug out, and by the rocks ; then I will speak of the tools by which veins and rocks are broken down and excavated ; the method by which fire shatters the hard veins ; and further, of the machines with which water is drawn from the shafts and air is forced into deep shafts and long tunnels, for digging is impeded by the inrush of the former or the failure of the latter ; next I will deal with the two kinds of shafts, and with the making of them and of tunnels ; and finally, I will describe the method of mining venae dilatatae, venae cumulatae, and stringers.

DIGGING of veins I have written of, and the timbering of shafts, tunnels, drifts, and other excavations, and the art of surveying. I will now speak first of all, of the iron tools with which veins and rocks are broken, then of the buckets into which the lumps of earth, rock, metal, and other excavated materials are thrown, in order that they may be drawn, conveyed, or carried out. A COMPLETE transformation has taken place in the boras industry during the year 1908. A most remarkable factor in this radical change in method of producing the crude borates has been its removal from the realm of industrial chemistry to the field of mining. With the development of extensive deposits of borate-minerals interstratified in thick sequences of Tertiary clays and sands, their winning becomes a strictly mining-enterprise, of the same kind and of the same certainty as the digging of coal or iron-ore. The major supply of the world's production of commercial borax now comes from the United States. While formerly all of the boric salts of commerce were laboriously extracted from the waters of saline lakes of the arid regions, or from the bottom-salts of desiccated ponds, it later was largely slowly leached from ancient desert shales and clays. During these periods the borax industry was a very hazardous and expensive vocation.

Raiseboring is an attractive method of constructing shafts, being safe, fast and comparatively cheap. But this means back-reaming through weathered ground. However in the gravels and weathered near-surface rocks typical of the Western Australian goldfields, back reaming large diameter shafts through to the surface is risky and conventional sinking from surface has normally been required.An alternative construction approach has recently been used to stabilise the weak surficial materials and allow raiseboring through to the surface. The method is based on first installing rings of non-contiguous reinforced bored piles around the shaft perimeter, for temporary support, then back reaming shafts at full diameter through to the surface. Immediately after the reaming head is removed, the weak exposed materials are supported using remotely sprayed fibrecrete.The method has been successfully applied to four shafts since July 2007; 3 m and 4 m diameter shafts at Trident Mine, a 3 m diameter shaft at Wattle Dam and a 4.5 m diameter shaft at Athena Mine.Bored pile layout designs have varied from eight to 24 piles, of diameters 120 to 270 mm, in one or two rings. In one case, the top 10 m of the proposed shaft was pregrouted. Subsequent surveys have confirmed that fallout occurred in some shafts, out to the ring of piles, implying that the piles inhibited collapse.The practical implementation of the method was not always easy and many valuable lessons have been learnt. This paper documents key aspects of the method and the critical elements for its application.

"1 INTRODUCTION With a land area of 718 square kilometres housing a population of slightly over 5.4 million, as of 2014 (Department of Statistics Singapore 2015), Singapore is a highly urbanised city. Transport infrastructure is critical to keep the country and economy highly connected and functional as the population in Singapore continues to grow. The importance of a robust transport infrastructure is recognised by the Ministry of Transport in Singapore, which is working towards bringing 8 in 10 households within a 10-minute walk of a train station by 2030 (Ministry of Transport 2015). This gives rise to the rapid expansion of the rail network in highly urbanised Singapore, resulting in more tunnelling work having to be carried out in closer proximity to existing buildings. Such tunnelling work is expectedly more challenging and complex, and if not managed effectively, will impose higher risk to the adjacent buildings. Hence, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has implemented specific control measures to mitigate such tunnelling risks and to ensure safety of the public. 2 CHALLENGES FACED BY TUNNELLING WORK IN SINGAPORE 2.1 General Challenges of Tunnelling in Singapore With the increasing densification of the rail network in a highly urbanised setting, rail projects in Singapore are faced with several key challenges. One such construction challenge is constrained construction sites brought about by network intensification. Alongside the growth of the rail network, shown in Figure 1, other infrastructure networks in Singapore are also continuously growing. Underground interchange stations between networks become increasingly common, forcing each underground interchange station to be constructed deeper and in closer proximity to existing buildings (Figure 2). Singapore is not alone in facing this issue. The same can be observed in cities like London, in which its myriad network of subway lines pushes new lines and interchange stations to be constructed deeper."

Drill and blast was determined to be the most cost-effective means of excavating the Raw Water Tunnel (RWT) for the Croton Water Treatment Plant in the Bronx, New York City. One of the major issues confronting project designers was the potential impact of blast vibrations on a major City Distribution Tunnel (CDT). The proposed path of the RWT would cross less than 30 meters (100 feet) above the CDT, which was built in 1917. Discussions with New York City Department of Environmental Protection led to vibration criteria on the CDT of 51 mm/sec (2 in/sec) peak particle velocity as an alert level, and 38 mm/sec (1.5 in/sec) as a review level.

In 1974, Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited started a 48 million dollar expansion programme at their property in Bathurst, New Brunswick. A portion of the expansion plans includes a 26 foot diameter 4,525 foot deep shaft, underground crusher and conveyor excavations and lower level access development. J. S. Redpath Limited was awarded the contract for the new shaft and associated rock work in May 1974. Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited, a member of the Noranda Group, operate this 10,000 ton per day lead, zinc, copper plant with proven reserves in excess of 90 million tons. While most of the ore is provided by the underground operation at the Number 12 ore body, some tonnage is produced from the open pit at the Number 6 ore body. Long range plans indicate a phasing out of the open pit and an increase in production from the underground operation. Existing facilities at the underground mine could not provide additional tonnage, thus the requirement for a new shaft. (Figure 1) The new shaft will also provide access to ore below the 2,800 level which is currently the bottom level of the existing facility. The contract called for sinking a 26 foot inside diameter, nine compartment concrete shaft 4,525 feet deep (Figure 2). Station access and ramp development from existing workings would be required to the bottom of the new shaft. In addition, development work for new crushing and conveying facilities was needed simultaneous with the shaft sinking.

This report describes the feasibility test of an electromagnetic method for locating, boreholes, with or without casing, that have been drilled in conjunction with mining operations but whose location with respect to the tunnel is not precisely known. The first tests were conducted with the cooperation of the Kerr-McGee Corporation, Church Rock Mining Operations, New Mexico, in September 1977. These tests demonstrated that accuracies of better than ±15% of range and ±1° of bearing can be achieved with a simple system and setups. Subsequent tests, in January 1978, on a horizontally drilled pipe line river crossing application, by Ti tan Contractors of Sacramento, California, demonstrated that accuracies of better than one-half percent of range and a few tenths of one degree of bearing can be achieved by using refined techniques. The demonstration tests were done at ranges on the order of 100 to 200 feet but the method is capable of working at much greater distances.

To plan a safe and efficient coal mining operation, the design engineer should use all the available information regarding the property to be exploited. The reliability of the mining operation must be as high as possible so that the plants relying on the coal can operate at the maximum design capacity. A good design should incorporate all of the known geological characteristics of the deposit, the structural and physical properties of the coal, as well as the rock which will form the roof and floor of the mine openings. A systematic method is proposed as a guide to insure a mine design that will be safe, efficient and will minimize surface disturbances resulting from mining operations. It is anticipated that the method proposed will result in maximum extraction at perhaps minimum cost to the operator. In general, to develop a mining area, several factors are systematically reviewed: (1) determination of the economic minability of the deposit, (2) the computation of the coal reserves, (3) the marketability of the coal, and (4) the life of the property. In general, boreholes are drilled in a predetermined pattern and geophysical or geological methods are used to log the boreholes. The information so obtained is primarily used to determine the quality and the extent of the deposit and to determine to some extent such geological features as faults, barren areas, washouts, and channels.

SUMMARY The Witwatersrand quartzites in which South African gold mining operations are moat exclusively conducted, are notoriously difficult and costly to drill. Despite this situation, however, with the high cost of developing new mines and extending existing mines, together with the rising cost of labour and mining problems resulting from the ever-increasing depths of workings, the demand for raise-boring in these formations is increasing rapidly. Not only is the demand for raises and shafts increasing, but also the length and size of these excavations. Raise-boring studies carried out in South African gold mines have indicated that increased penetration rates and possibly reduced costs could be obtained if higher thrusts were available at the reaming head. Until fairly recently there has been no raise-boring machine suitable for underground use that possessed the thrust and torque characteristics necessary to achieve high penetration rates in hard abrasive quartzite formations and the cutters available were not really developed for high loading. In response to these requirements a raise-borer, the Robbins 83R was designed and built in Seattle, U.S.A. for the Anglo American Corporation. This machine is operating in South African gold mines and is currently being used at a depth of 12 000 ft below surface in one of the. Group's mines. The initial raises bored have substantiated that increased penetration is attainable at high thrust and it is now apparent that the machine is sufficiently versatile to drill raises of up to 12 ft in diameter in quartzite formation over a length of 2 000 ft.

The seams of black coal occurring in Victoria are so disturbed by faulting, wash-outs, thinning, etc., that it is necessary, for the prevention of costly errors in development, that close boring be undertaken so that the correct positions of the shafts, tunnels, main and auxiliary roadways can be set out in order that the area can be economically worked. The State Coal Mine has two boring plants continuously at work, which have given good service for the last twenty-five years.The information supplied herein is merely our experience in boring at the State Coal Mine over an extended period. The type of plant in use is that known as the Victoria Drilling Plant, equipped with an 11 h.p. portable oil engine, using power kerosene as fuel. It was purchased in 1914, complete with mechanism for cable drilling, capable of boring to a depth of 1500 ft. with a guarantee of 1000 ft., with Calyx cutters, boring rods and all necessary equipment for the sum of £1473. The chief mechanical features of the plant are as follows:-The derrick is in the shape of a tripod (see Fig. 1), two of the legs being of steel channel built together to form a frame which, when lowered on to two sets of road wheels, forms a carriage for the transport of a portion of the boring equipment. The third leg is made of oregon in the form of a double bow, with bolts and distance pieces between the wooden sides. The top of this is hinged on to the steel frame, and the bottom is fitted into a cast iron block, having two small wheels to facilitate erection. The Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) is currently expanding capacity by extending their Metro system from South of the city to the North East end of the island. The scope of Contract 704 involved excavating a long reach of tunnel which had a complex rock/soil interface comprised of fresh granite overlaid by clayey sand. Two 6.5 m diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM’s were used to bore the tunnels. These machines were designed so that both hard and soft rock could be excavated. The cutter head was equipped with a combination of both rippers and disk cutters. Soil conditioning was achieved by delivering foam through a multiple port injection system. This very irregular profile of the interfaces posed many challenges to the equipment and the people.

Right in the heart of Boston Harbor lies Deer Island, where a ten-year, 6 billion dollar sewage treatment plant is under construction. The 9.5 mile long, 25.5' diameter Effluent Outfall Tunnel is the center piece of this program. A Robbins double-shielded TBM is currently driving this challenging tunnel some 400 feet below sea level. This paper will discuss the set-up and operation of this Tunnel Boring Machine in driving the longest single heading tunnel ever built in North America.
