The Cassidy Colliery operated by the Granby Consolidated Mining Smelting & Power Co., Ltd., is situated about 9 miles in a southerly direc tion from the city of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. The coal seam worked, which is called the Douglas bed, outcrops in the western part of the property, dipping easterly, and is opened by a slope 7 by 14 ft. in the clear, and is timbered by 12 to 14-in. framed sets of timber, 4 ft. center to center. A separate manway provides for a traveling road and at the same time forms an intake airway. The general average of the dip of the seam at Cassidy is 18º, and varies in thickness from 1 to 25 ft., averaging about 8 ft. The main slopes follow straight down the dip a distance of 4845 ft. At the bottom of the main slope two rock tunnels were driven a distance of 1500 ft. to the south, cutting through a fault, and opening up an area in the same seam which is known as No. 7 South Section. The coal is found in this section at a vertical depth of 1560 ft., and is very soft and friable. The immediate roof is a strong, sandy. shale overlain by massive sandstone while the floor is a light-colored shale, hard when freshly exposed. It does not soften materially on exposure. In the folding of the coal measures a great thrust caused a movement along the coal seam as indicated by the slickensided nature of the coal. The floor has buckled and this has rolled and squeezed the coal so that with rare exceptions it shows no normal bedding but curved slip planes, which frequently start at right angles to the floor, curving upward and then in the direction of the dip. As such planes are slickensided it is probable that there is a coating of clay which is more or less impervious to gas. During 1982 Ash Grove Cement Company contracted with Wagester, Walker, Thornton & Company to convert a Calcimatic rotating hearth kiln at its Portland, Oregon lime plant from gas/oil to coal firing. Increasing costs of natural gas and No. 6 fuel oil made this conversion mandatory if the plant was to remain competitive. Unique features of this project are 1) the distributors of pulverized coal to eighteen small burners around the inner and outer perimeters of the doughnut-shaped kiln, and 2) the attrition-dryer-pulverizer mill. Ash Grove, a century-old lime and cement producer headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas (Kansas City area), looked at various schemes for multiple burner firing before employing Wagester, Walker, Thornton & Company. W.W.T. of Pitts- burgh, Pennsylvania was formed in 1980 by acquiring the Solid Fuels Division of the Pullman Swindell Corporation. This division had been active in developing solid fuel firing for brick tunnel kilns, principally in the Southeast. They continue to supply such systems firing wood waste as well as coal to the brick industry and have also converted two Calcimatic lime kilns for Dixie Lime, Sumterville, Florida, a fluid bed calciner for Texas Gulf in Aurora, North Carolina, and a chrome concentrate kiln for Diamond Chemicals at Castle Hayne, North Carolina. Testing and a proposal have been made for INMETCO, Elwood City, Pennsylvania, on an annular hearth furnace for direct reduction of iron ore to metallic iron.

Since the Buffalo Creek incident in February, 1972, Federal and state environmental agencies have had the pressure on the coal industry in the Appalachian area to close the coal processing plant water circuits. In an attempt to comply with this requirement, Eastern .Associated Coal Corp. decided to install a vacuum disc filter system at its Kopperston plant to eliminate the tailings pond and reduce the amount of plant make-up water. It was recognized at the time that the plant static thickener tailings would be a very difficult slurry to dewater because of its unusually high clay content. The following is a case history of the Kopperston installation and the refinements Eastern has made in its vacuum disc filter operation to increase efficiency.

The employment of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) is the default delivery method for the realisation of traffic, utility and primary resource underground space worldwide, with hundreds of kilometres completed safely each year. This is not yet the case for the mining sector in Australia, specifically underground coal mining. The safety advantages of TBM delivery when compared to New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) delivery, or that of drill and blast, remains unrealised.With coal access drifts ranging between 1000?m and 3000?m in length, the construction of these facilities using TBMs could be done in a fraction of the time when compared to current practice. TBM world records currently stand at 435?m/week or 1600?m/month for the 7.0?m to 10.0?m range. Resource owners and developers should embrace the opportunity to deliver access to their orebodies in only a few months, excluding machine assembly and disassembly time.There are challenges in utilising TBMs for construction of Coal access drifts, such as; TBMs generally being bespoke design, maximising capital efficiency for drift development, and geotechnical variances between projects. This paper explores safer and more cost-effective options. This paper also provides detail of how the configuration within a completed drift could be optimised to ensure all site specific needs are met with regard to future use of the drift. The paper also includes descriptions of the engineering solutions that are available for physical and atmospheric challenges specific to coal drift applications and how the TBM manufactures are adapting to the regulatory requirements are also covered.Due to downward pressure on high cost bases and ever increasing safety requirements the popularity of TBMs in the Australian mining sector can be expected to increase and eventually become the default delivery method for coal drift construction, building them cheaper, faster and?safer.CITATION:Sibthorpe, D, 2014. The decreasing supplies of natural gas and low-sulfur crude oil available for electric power generation in the United States will unquestionably shift the emphasis to nuclear and coal fired steam power plants in the immediate future. Failure to do so will ensure our dependence on mid-east low sulfur crude oil comprising some 70% of the known world reserves, and imported liquid natural gas. By contrast, the United States has 43% of the known world reserves of anthracite, bituminous and semi-bituminous coal and 48% of all known coal reserves of the world including lignite. It is evident, therefore, that coal is alive and well and will continue to be a significant energy source for the production of electricity for many years. Of course, concern for our environment and the development of new technologies will ultimately curtail the utilization of coal for the generation of bulk power, but information released by the National Electric Reliability Council and the Federal Power Commission is worth repeating. In the year 1972 the total capacity of generating units in the United States was 379,552 Mw of which 149,974 Mw, or 39.5% of the total, was produced by coal fired steam turbines which consumed 344,700,000 tons of coal. New capacity additions planned or in construction show that in the year 1981 our total generating capacity will be 843,503 Mw, of which 257,995 Mw, or 30.6% of the total, if from coal only. Translating this increase into terms meaningful to the bulk material handling industry suggests that ten years from now the utility industry will require 590,000,000 tons of coal per year - a monumental task - if we are to sustain our current demand rate for power.

DURING the year just closed the bituminous industry has been marked by a continuation of the period of low prices and a steady deflation, accompanied by the closing of mines and the consolidation of small units into larger ones. This pro- gram has marked almost every field in the country, and it bids fair to continue for some time. Some figures recently published for Kentucky show that in 1924 there were 660 mines producing 45,147,000 tons; in 1928 the number had decreased to 537, while production had increased to 61,860,000 tons, and a similar movement is occurring all over the country. Prices throughout the early part of the year were very low, but during the fall and winter the prices received are more satisfactory than they were earlier in the year. One of the leading developments in the marketing of coal during the year was the trade practice movement, which began in the Harlan field, and has now been adopted in the Harlan, Hazard, Appalachian, Logan. Williamson and Kanawha fields. The purpose of this movement is to prevent the shipment of coal except on order, and by the publication of price lists to prevent much senseless price quotation. Where it has been practised the longest this movement has resulted in a considerable degree of stabilization, and, undoubtedly, it will help existing conditions very materially if it becomes universal.

The ability to sense or detect the coal/non-coal interface during mining can provide numerous advantages for improving net coal recovery and quality, for increasing productivity, and for mining coal which would otherwise be ignored. This is particularly true when considering multiple, pitching, and thin coal seams. This paper discusses the application of coal interface sensing and examines several potential coal interface sensing techniques with respect to state-of- the-art, design, performance, and cost criteria. Four interface boundaries are considered: the roof, the floor, the rib, and the forward region.

Pennsylvania Power & Light Company is an investor-owned public utility which was incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on June 4, 1920, with general offices at 901 Hamilton Street, Allentown, Pennsylvania. At the present time PP&L is operating five coal-fired steam electric stations, two hydroelectric stations and one steam heat plant which is being converted from anthracite to oil fired. In addition, PP&L is a partner in both the Keystone and Conemaugh mine mouth bituminous coal-fired steam electric stations in Central Pennsylvania and also part owner of a company which operates another hydroelectric station. PP&L plants, other than the two mine mouth stations, are located in Central Eastern Pennsylvania. (Figure 1) The company derives about 99% of its operating revenues from supplying electric service, while the balance is from the one steam heat plant serving the city of Harrisburg. The entire service area covering 10,000 square miles in 29 counties, has a population of approximately 2,300,000 people. The area served is mostly suburban. It includes 109 communities each having a population in excess of 5,000 people. The largest cities served are Allentown, Bethlehem, Harrisburg, Hazleton, Lancaster, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Williamsport which range from 50,000 - 120,000 in population. So you see our service area does not include any major cities. The area has industrial, commercial, residential, agricultural and recreational activities that are linked with the Eastern Megalopolis by an extensive interstate limited-access highway system and railroad networks. We consider this Central Eastern Pennsylvania area we serve as the "heart of the market" -- an area with great growth potential.

Summarized Foreword This paper is one of a series arranged by Institute Divisional Committees for the Fiftieth Anniversary Meeting, reviewing the experience of the major mining and metallurgical industries during the life of the Institute. The viewpoint is national and broadly technical. Geology is stressed on a continental scale without regard for provincial boundaries. The boundary between Canada and the United States is, however, so decisive a factor in our coal-mining economics and our political evolution that mention of its implications cannot be avoided. The Laurentian Shield in Canada makes the occurrence of coal deposits a geological impossibility between the St. Lawrence Lowlands and the Great Plains. All but five per cent of Canadian coal resources occur west of Winnipeg. The utilization of this ninety-five per cent of our coal wealth has to date been a consequence of transcontinental railways' development, and the small fuel needs of thinly populated wheat farming and cattle-raising territory, in what- to judge from the development of mixed farming and greater population density of Manitoba- is merely an initial stage of agricultural intensification and accordant population growth. There is no useful purpose in measuring coal resource against consumption rate in the West as a whole, because the resource is but partially known, and it is difficult to believe that industrialism based upon coal utilization is in any but its infant stage of growth. Canada west of Winnipeg possesses, moreover resources of petroleum and natural gas, which, together with the power-potential in the long watershed of the eastern slope of the Rocky mountains, give to population centres such as Calgary and Edmonton a choice of energy resources that is almost an embarrass des riches.

The major purpose of this bulletin, as indicated in the preface by Dr. John W. Finch, Director of the Bureau of Mines, is to give a critical review of the coal-mining methods used in the principal producing countries of Europe, to describe the reasons underlying the adoption of these methods, and to contrast them with coal-mining methods employed in the United States. The report includes discussions of various subjects intimately related to coal mining, such as geology of the principal coal fields; production and resources of the several countries; mine safety and health research; Government mining regulations; mine inspection and rescue procedure; safety lamps; fixed lighting methods under-ground; testing electric motors, mining machines, and mining explosives for permissibility; and special mining hazards, such as explosions of gas and coal dust, mine fires, instantaneous gas outbursts, ground movement and surface subsidence, and bumps. Commercial, economic, and labor problems of European coal mining, including miners' output, wages, and social-insurance schemes, as well as cost of mining, prices of coal, etc., are briefly described. It will be noted that data on most subjects are not given for Russia, which has become an important coal-producing country, owing to the lack of reliable published information concerning Russian coal mining.

To forecast the future of coal intelligently, one must first consider the market outlook. Coal can be used for many purposes, but currently about 25% of it goes into metallurgical coke, while 75% serves as fuel. Coal for metallurgical coke should show a modest growth for at least the next decade, primarily because of increased exports, but the important factor in the coal outlook is energy. Today, this country faces a serious shortage of energy, and its requirements are growing at an almost unbelievable rate. Last year the United States consumed 68 quadrillion Btu, or double the energy it consumed in 1950, and, if projections are correct, this figure will grow to 150 quadrillion Btu by 1990. Thus, in one working lifetime, the nation's energy consumption is expected to increase by roughly five times. The future of coal hinges on its degree of participation in meeting this energy need. The Federal Power Commission predicts that coal consumed by electric utilities will increase about 4-576 per yr, reaching 472 million tons by 1980 and 615 million tons by 1990. If this projection proves correct, 1980 consumption will be double that of last year and, even more startling, the utility industry alone will use more coal in 1990 than the entire coal industry produced in 1970. This is a tremendous increase, but in view of the projected energy growth, it is difficult to see how this country's needs can be satisfied with- out a coal contribution of this magnitude. Unless some new source such as solar energy is discovered, it must be assumed that the projected energy will come principally from the present-day sources-oil, gas, nuclear materials and coal.

"THE FOLLOWING notes on coal mining in the Edmonton city area are based, in the main, on scattered reports and accounts as little coal mining has been done in this area for about 20 years and few people are left who were involved in what was at one time an important industry of northern Alberta. Although coal mining is not likely to be permitted in the city area itself in the future, a record of this work is warranted to indicate the ·conditions and problems that may be encountered if underground mining again is proposed in the district in the same geological formations and in similar strata. Coal mining in the Edmonton area developed with the influx of settlers in the latter part of the nineteenth century and the first part of the present century. Probably local coal was used by the Fort's blacksmith as early as 1841, and the early settlers probably were 'gopherholing' into the outcrops along the river banks by the 1870s. The first report of commercial coal mining was in 1880 when a contract was let by the Hudson's Bay Company for the provision of 300 tons. As the population in the city and northern parts of the province grew, many new mines were opened along the river and in the district, and coal was even shipped by barge to points in Saskatchewan(1 ,2) By 1909 the Department of Public Works reported that 'Edmonton stands as the second largest domestic coal producing centre in the province'. It continued to hold this position until 1942. From about 1912 to 1951 annual production from mines in the city and surrounding district ranged between 0.38 and 0.65 million tons, depending on weather, wars and strikes. Production began to decline in 1951 because of the increasing availability and consumption of natural gas which was piped into the city and then provided to other towns and rural areas in the northern part of the province. Taylor noted that between 1880 and March 1970, when the last mine within the city area closed, the total of mines and prospects within the Edmonton city area rose to 153. Most of them were small; not more than 20 produced more than a quarter of a million tonnes during their entire life, and only three produced a million tonnes or more. As described by Taylor ""within the city district workings extend discontinuously from the apex of a narrow triangle near Groat Bridge to the base of the triangle in the Clover Bar area"". The larger mines were in this latter area. Approximate locations of the old mine workings in the city are shown in Taylor's atlas. A number of other coal mines were worked in the Rabbit Hill, Big Island, St. Albert, Namao, Cardiff and Morinville districts around the city."

This paper describes the method of mining a steeply pitching anthracite seam on a heavy pitch in the Orchard vein in No. 1 Tunnel of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co. The Orchard vein in the Neaquehoning district has a thickness of about 15 ft. on the level of the gangway, which is sufficient thickness for the gangway to be driven full width in coal. Above the gangway, the vein becomes thinner and near the surface is about 8 it. thick. The coal is of good hard quality and carries a fairly good roof. The pitch of the vein is between 65" and 70". Usually the breast-and-pillar method has been employed in the mining of the steeply pitching veins in this section. This method produced good results as far as the mining of the breast was concerned but the recovery of the pillar was difficult as to full extraction and expensive as regards costs. To recover these pillars after the breasts were driven, three methods were commonly employed; they were known as the pillar-breast method, pillar-skipping method, and pillar-chute method. The pillar-breast method consisted in putting a battery in one corner of the pillar (Fig. I), coupling the manways A and B of the two adjacent breasts for two or three lengths ahead of the working face of the pillar being cut, and working the pillar as a breast. This method was used by the more skilled miners of the earlier days but has practically been abandoned. A slight variation of this method is used to some extent. In this case, the pillars are left wider than ordinarily and of sufficient width for the full-width breast to be driven in and a small pillar left on each side of the pillar breast between it and the regular breasts. With the completion of the "pillar breast," the ribs are drilled full of holes, loaded, and fired. In the pillar-skipping method (Fig. 2), the middle breast of three is not driven through and is drawn empty while the outside and inside breasts are kept full. At the corners of the two pillars standing, batteries are put in and a skip of the two pillars started; the coal in the two pillars is blasted over into the empty breast. "Current coal pillar design is the epitome of suspension design. A defined weight of potentially unstable overburden material is estimated, and the dimensions of the pillars left behind are based on holding up that material to a prescribed or user-defined Factor of Safety. In principle, this is seemingly no different to early roadway roof support design. However, for the most part, roadway roof stabilisation has progressed to reinforcement, whereby the roof strata is assisted in supporting itself. This is now the mainstay of efficient and effective underground coal production. Suspension and reinforcement are fundamentally different in their roadway roof stabilisation approach and, importantly, lead to substantially different requirements in terms of roof support hardware characteristics and their application. In suspension design, the primary focus is the total load-bearing capacity of the installed support to ensure that it is securely anchored outside of the potentially unstable roof mass. In contrast, reinforcement recognises that roof de-stabilisation is a gradational process with an ever-increasing roof displacement magnitude leading to ever-reducing stability. In a reinforcing situation, key roof support characteristics relate such design issues as system stiffness, the location and pattern of support elements within the roadway, and mobilising a defined thickness of the immediate roof to create (or build) some form of stabilising strata beam. The objective is to ensure that horizontal stress acts across the roof of the roadway and is maintained at a level that prevents mass roof collapse. This paper presents a prototype coal pillar and overburden system representation where reinforcement, rather than suspension, of the overburden is the stabilising mechanism via the action of in situ horizontal stresses within the overburden, the suspension problem potentially being an exception rather than the rule, as is also the case in roadway roof stability. Established principles relating to roadway roof reinforcement can potentially be applied to coal pillar design under this representation. The merit of this assertion is evaluated according to documented failed pillar cases in a range of mining applications and industries found in a series of published databases. Based on the various findings, a series of coal pillar system design considerations and suggestions for bord and pillar type mine workings are provided. This potentially allows a more flexible and informed approach to coal pillar sizing within workable mining layouts, as compared to common industry practices of a single design Factor of Safety (FoS) under defined overburden dead-loading to the exclusion of other potentially relevant overburden stabilising influences."

This article offers an examination of a retreat mining method conducted at the Pinoura Mine in India from 2010 to 2017. The method is atypical for coal mines of India’s coalfields. The method executes depillaring in a single pass and does not require the formation of galleries and support installation in splits, thus, reducing the cycle time. A variety of observations are discussed throughout this work and emphasis is placed on field measurements and depillaring under weak roof (RMR = 40–45). This paper discusses design techniques, specifically the estimation of the snook (remnant pillar) size, and important practical observations after the fact. The execution of this method was eventually conducted in eleven panels.

The Monterey Coal Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Carter Oil Company of Houston, Texas, recently awarded a contract to build the Monterey No. 1 Preparation Plant, which will be located near Carlinville, Illinois, to the McNally Pittsburg Manufacturing Corporation. The preparation plant will be one of the most modern jig preparation plants in the State of Illinois. Illinois No. 6 coal will be delivered by a 48" slope belt having 35-degree carrying idlers, operating at 650 FPM and operating on an incline of nearly 17 degrees. The slope belt is driven by two 450 BP motors and will deliver the mined coal at the rate of 1800 TPH to a stationary step-type ' screen having six-inch openings. The overproduct from the stationary screen will discharge into a 10' x 24' McNally Rotary Breaker and the underproduct will bypass the rotary breaker. The rotary breaker is equipped with heavy manganese screens with 6 ½" diameter openings. The sized 6" x 0 coal from the stationary step screen and the rotary breaker will be discharged by gravity to a 4%" raw coal incline storage belt. The 48" raw coal storage belt will deliver the 6" x 0 sized coal at the rate of 1800 T?H to an 8000 ton concrete raw coal silo, 70 feet in diameter and 1x7 feet high. The 6" x 0 sized coal will be drawn from the concrete storage silo by seven (7) 36" wide reciprocating plate feeders. Five feeders are to have constant speed drives at a rated capacity of 145 TPH each. Two (2) feeders will have remote con- trolled variable speed drives, to provide a varying feed.

"UNTIL the last few years, the collieries of the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, while highly mechanized as to the cutting and transportation of the coal, still relied on the hand-loading of coal from the seam onto face conveyors. In these circumstances it was possible to assure that no large proportion of extraneous materials would be loaded with the coal, and the product could be quite well cleaned for the market by screening and hand-picking.Within the past few years, however, the Company has introduced an intensive programme of mechanization which will result in the virtual elimination of hand-loading .of coal. It has been the experience of other producers that mechanical loading inevitably leads to a very large increase in the amount of impurities in the product. This is occasioned by the fact that, at least up to the present, all types of loading machines have relied on the coal being broken from the seam by under-cutting and shooting. In this operation, a certain amount of roof and pavement material inevitably becomes mixed with the coal and, since selective loading is impossible with a loading machine, all this foreign material is loaded out with the product."

THE purpose of this paper is to point out, briefly, the importance of the coal mining industry of Alberta and to stress the economic factors that hinder its development; also to offer suggestions relating to the major problems of the industry. The minor problems will not be dealt with in detail, because, if the major problems are taken care of, it is felt that the industry itself can take care of ,he remainder. COAL MINING NO LESS IMPORTANT THAN GOLO MINING The large increase in metal mining development in all provinces of Canada, excepting Saskatchewan, Alberta, and the Maritimes, has had the effect of focussing public attention on this branch of the industry. The fact, also, that this development came at a time of depression has been of immense benefit to Canada as a whole. On account of the necessity and consequent demand for gold, with its attendant increase in price, through government action, from $20.67 per ounce to $35.00 per ounce, it is safe to say that the public of Canada have become, today, gold mining conscious. While everyone admits the great value. of the gold mrn111g industry, nevertheless, the equal value to Canada of certain other industries must not be lost sight of. The coal mining industry, in particular, is worthy of greater public and government support than has been accorded it in the past. It would seem unnecessary to stress this matter to a meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, but unless certain facts are brought to your attention, there is danger that the coal mining industry will not be developed to the extent its national importance deserves. Too many public men and men in authority are unaware of the value of coal mining.
