Pluor Utah has been closely associated with the engineering and construction of earth bottom thickeners for porphyry copper operations, for the counter-current decantation circuit of a gold cyanide plant and similar applications in mineral processing. During the past 13 years, some 18 of these thickeners have entered service and the bottoms have proved to be watertight structures with no particular problems encountered. In the course of this work, technological advances have been realized in the procedures for engineering and construction of these units to assure watertight basins and achieve all possible economies in construction. This paper describes the successful application of engineering and construction techniques for a number of these thickeners.

Innovative geotechnical construction techniques were used to construct three pedestrian tunnels under a building slab-on-grade to allow utilization of basement space for manufacturing. Tunnels were constructed using mining techniques through granular fill soils less than three feet below on-going sensitive manufacturing operations. Project design consisted of jet grout underpinning of exterior foundation walls and an arch of drilled-in grouted horizontal dowels for soil pre-support to limit ground movements during excavation. Permanent tunnel lining consisted of arched steel rib sets and invert struts supported on precast footings encased in cast-in-place concrete slab and side walls and a gunite arch.

The York Durham Sewage System (YDSS) Interceptor Tunnel Project is located in the Town of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, just north of Toronto. Construction commenced in September 2006 and completion is planned for early summer, 2008. The project involved public and agency buy-in of construction technologies and methods that minimized dewatering, design and construction of sealed shafts with jet grout break-in and out blocks in order that Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) mode could be maintained by the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) during shaft entry and exit. This paper will discuss the advances that were made possible through the opportunity to apply and test these technologies in order to accommodate the aquifer and artesian conditions present on this project.

INTRODUCTION The entire scope of new facilities for Lake Mead Intake No. 3 includes a sub-merged intake structure, a deep tunnel beneath Lake Mead, a tunnel access shaft, Intake Pumping Station No. 3, and connections to an existing intake and water treat-ment facility, as shown in Figure 1. In March 2008 Vegas Tunnel Constructors (VTC), a joint venture of Impregilo SpA and SA Healy were awarded a $447m Design-Build contract by SNWA for a section of this work (Contract 070F 01 C1), including the 185 m deep tunnel access shaft, the 4.7 km long, 6.1 m diameter tunnel and the submerged intake. Arup, supported by Brierley Associates, is the Design Engineer for VTC. The scope of the work is shown in Figure 2. This paper will describe the design and construction on this contract, with a focus on the access shaft which is the most complete section of the work. The shaft is being sunk using drill-and-blast methods with the finallining placed as excavation proceeds. The shaft passes through a major fault zone, and extensive pre-excavation grouting for water control is required for much of the depth of the shaft.

The 372 MW Ulu Jelai Hydroelectric Project is a peaking power scheme located in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. The main features of the project include an 84 m high roller compacted concrete dam; two weirs which divert flows from adjacent catchments via transfer tunnels into the main reservoir; an underground power waterway; and an underground power station complex comprising three large caverns with connecting tunnels approximately 240 m below surface level. The project includes approximately 25 km of tunnels excavated in fresh granite rock mass with some distinct shear zones of weaker material. The majority of the tunnels are being excavated using drill and blast, with the two transfer tunnels being excavated with a tunnel boring machine (TBM).This paper focuses on the design and construction of the Telanok underground power station complex and also some aspects of the design for the headrace tunnel. Topics covered include geological site investigations including in situ measurements of rock stresses; development of a geological model and parameters for rock support design; three-dimensional modelling to assess interactions between the caverns to optimise rock support; design of a rock anchored crane beam; construction of the caverns and design of the unlined headrace tunnel taking into account hydraulic jacking and operational pressure fluctuations.CITATION:Drowley, L, Gaida, B and Chapman, B, 2014. Configuration of Rozelle Interchange Project’s ventilation system required design and construction of some of the largest and tallest underground civil caverns attempted in Australia. The paper focuses on the technical challenges of designing these caverns within a heterogeneous, generally weak sandstone under highstress conditions while providing a construction sequence that would align with the contractor’s preferred techniques and schedule. Various construction techniques were investigated, but ultimately an observational approach relying on a construction sequence and specialized instrumentation met both the designer’s and contractor’s requirements. Relevant data obtained from excavations and the construction monitoring program are presented within.

This paper details the extensive underpinning required to hold up the 39th street Bridge while demolishing its massive support piers and building a 30ft deep Cut/ Cover RR tunnel beneath it. The underpinning/SOE support required the construction of 16 large hand dug pits 36ft deep that were reinforced and concrete filled. In addition, an extensive steel support system was tied into the bridge super structure. All of the underpinning/tunnel construction was done while a 110ton crane sat directly atop the heavily trafficked – 66 ft. wide bridge. The tunnel excavation, concrete lining and final bridge pier support work will also be presented. All work was done within 5ft of active mainline tracks and that required tight grouting behind all lagging to eliminate any track settlement.

More than 55 km of tunnels have been constructed by TBM in the last 12 years to refurbish and upgrade the high voltage cable network in London. These include a tunnel of 20km length using EPBM machines in both clay and granular soils. Route selection was made with reference to subsurface structures, existing ground conditions, using suitable shaft locations addressing environmental concerns. The complex interfaces to manage included obtaining of consents to the coordination of multiple suppliers. The paper describes how all these challenges have been met successfully and how technology has been employed to provide for safe construction and operation in the congested urban environment.

The Malana Hydroelectric Project is a private development located in HimachalPradesh State, India that was commissioned in June 2001. The plant was built and is owned by the Malana Power Company, a subsidiary of the Bhilwara Group of New Delhi. With a total head of 400 m and nominal capacity of 86 MW, the plant is capable of generating 360 GWh annually. The 3,1 km long, 4,0 m diameter power tunnel was designed to be excavated by conventional drill and blast methods. Contrary to traditional practice in India for pressure tunnels of providing a concrete lining, the Malana tunnel was finished mainly with shotcrete. In this way, the tunnel was completed in a period of18 months, a record for recent projects in the Himalayas, and at a cost substantially below that of conventionally lined tunnels. An interesting aspect of the project was the design of the steel tunnel liner linking the power tunnel to the penstock. The length of the liner was fixed finally on the basis of in-situ testing using both hydraulic jacking and doorstopper tests to evaluate the ability of the rock to withstand the internal pressure of4,0 MPa that exist near the downstream end of the tunnel.

The Doan Valley Storage Tunnel Project in Cleveland Ohio was constructed to control Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs). It is a complex system of three tunnels ranging from 8.5 to 18 feet in diameter with a total length of about 2.3 miles that was put into operation in mid-2021. The project lies within and below the cultural, educational, and medical hub of Cleveland, which presented unique design and construction challenges. This paper provides a case history of the design and construction, with particular attention given to lessons learned in devising a large tunnel system that can carry both dry and wet weather flows constructed in rock with limited cover, within a flood plain area and vibrant urban center

INTRODUCTION The Norad Expansion Project was located 10 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado, within Cheyenne Mountain. The expansion areas to be excavated would be adjacent to the existing underground Norad complex, which would remain in operation during the work on the expansion. The original complex had been constructed approximately eight years earlier and had been in full operation for approximately five years. Phase I, Excavation was awarded the Tiro Construction Corporation, a subsidiary of Harrison Western Corporation, Denver, Colorado, in the fall of 1970. Notice to Proceed was given to Tiro on 28 December 1970. The project owner was the U. S. Air Force, design was performed by the U. S. Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, who would also serve as the construction agency. [ ]

Once completed, the Montreal Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) will be the fourth largest automated transportation system in the world. The REM represents construction costs of approximately 7.0 billion Canadian dollars. The project consists of 67 km of twin tracks over four branches connected to downtown Montreal. The project includes 26 stations with 3 underground stations in downtown Montreal. One of the underground stations was built using the NATM method with thin permanent shotcrete initial and final liners separated by a sprayed on waterproofing membrane. The 2 other underground stations were built with the cut and cover approach including one using permanent secant pile wall with permanent walers and struts as the support of excavation and the final perimeter wall of the station. The project also includes the rehabilitation and enlargement of the Mont Royal Tunnel. This 100-year-old double track tunnel is about 5 km long. The REM also consists of 3.6 km new TBM tunnel connecting downtown to the Montreal International Airport through saturated soft ground and karstic rock. By the time of RETC, the construction of REM underground structures will be completed. This paper presents the design and construction aspects of the underground structures of this mega project.

The technique of installing small diameter caissons (drilled piers) through soft clays and water bearing ganular soil is well established for constructing building foundations. Over the past few years, the method has been utilized for constructing a large number of shafts extending into rock for the Chicago's Deep Tunnel Project. This paper will discuss design considerations for obtaining the most economic ground support system, the impact of construction procedures on the support and lateral pressures for design. Construction procedures will be described along with performance of the shafts.

A major component of Sydney’s new South West Rail Link project is the Hume Highway Underpass (HHU), an 80 m long twin track mined tunnel excavated at a depth of just 5 m below the pavement of the Hume Highway; one of Australia’s busiest road corridors.In order to ensure a safe and efficient construction of the underpass without disruption to the Hume Highway traffic, design of the HHU required specific focus on the prediction and control of ground movements. This paper describes the design and construction solutions adopted in response to these challenging constraints. Short Historical Review Tunnelling in Germany is as old as it is in other industrial countries. Until the middle of this century German contractors had no chance to work continuously in this business except if they were operating internationally. Since 1960, however, tunnelling has been a growing market domestically. The reasons for this growth have been both in the growing demand of traffic routes and also in an increasing environmental consciousness, which tries to transfer any cause of disturbance underground. Tunnelling engineers of course don't complain about this trend. As almost every German city is built upon water-bearing soft ground, shields have been used soon after they were first successfully utilized in Great Britain and the United States. Until the seventies lining systems for shield tunnels were predominantly either cast iron segments or concrete segments for primary support combined with different sealing systems and a secondary concrete lining cast-in-place. Steel ribs and timber lagging for primary support has not been utilized in Germany, since the owners don't accept timber to be left in the ground. In 1973, for the first time, permanent linings were constructed with watertight segment rings of precast concrete (Fig. 1). This lining was developed as an economical solution for use with slurry shields in noncohesive, water-bearing soils that required an immediately watertight lining. Extruded linings have a similar effect, although these still need a secondary lining

The Henderson/ML King CSO Project is a major combined sewer overflow (CSO)reduction project for the Department of Natural Resources and Parks of King County, Washington. The central element of the project is the 3100 lineal feet long, 14'-8"diameter 42nd Ave S Storage/Treatment Tunnel. During the course of the project, the owner and consultants evaluated numerous elements of the tunnel including the alignment, geotechnical conditions, tunnel liner, and settlement monitoring requirements. The contractor utilized innovative shaft construction methods for the tunnel portals, and adhered to strict contract requirements in successfully constructing the tunnel. This paper provides an overview of the design and construction elements of the 42nd Ave S Storage/Treatment Tunnel that led to the successful completion of the project.

This paper describes the design and construction of three 7.2 m span access ramp-tunnels to the three level underground car park of the newly redeveloped Top Ryde City Shopping Centre in northern Sydney. The tunnels were to be excavated without significant impact on the overlying Devlin Street, one of the busiest arterial roads in the Sydney metropolitan area and a major link in the Sydney road network. The interpretation of the geological conditions indicated that the tunnels would be driven in a formation of heavily jointed, extremely weathered to fresh Triassic Ashfield shale with some structural features such as dyke, fault and shear zones identified in the available boreholes logs. Both empirical and numerical methods were used to design the tunnels and to predict the ground surface settlements. The design solution, which was influenced by the relatively small scale nature of the work and the current demands on the tunnel construction market, included presupport, initial support and permanent steel fibre reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) lining. The interactions of the driven portals with cut and cover sections and the proposed deep excavation of the new shopping centre were considered at the design development stage and in the construction phase to ensure the safety of the live road. The tunnels have been successfully constructed and are now operational.

Foreword Sir William Halcrow and Partners are responsible for the design of the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel as Sub-contractor to the Contractor, Osmac, a joint venture formed by the Arab Contractors, Osman Ahmed Osman and Company of Cairo, and Tarmac International of London. Throughout the paper the term "Client" refers to the Employer, the Ministry of Housing and Reconstruction, which latterly became the Ministry of Development and New Communities of the Arab Republic of Egypt. At the time of writing of this paper only a few hundred metres of the tunnel have been driven, but the design is substantially complete. Introduction The Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel, which is at present under construction, will be a two-lane tunnel crossing beneath the Suez Canal approximately 15 km north of the town of Suez at El Shallufa. It will become the first permanent connection across the Canal since 1967 and is visualised by the Egyptian Government as an early step in the development of the Sinai Desert along the eastern bank. The tunnel will carry pipelines for treated water and electric power cables to assist in this development. The tunnel, which will be 1640 m in length, is being driven through hard clay and mudstone using a tunnel shield fitted with hydraulic excavators. The primary lining is being constructed with precast, bolted reinforced concrete segments with an internal diameter of 10.4 m. The road deck structure and the walls of the air supply ducts beneath it are formed with precast, reinforced concrete units erected immediately behind the shield.

Construction of Ontario Power Generation?s 12.8-m diameter, 10.4-km long water diversion tunnel in Niagara Falls, Ontario, is underway. The tunnel is being excavated by means of a 14.44-m diameter open gripper Tunnel Boring Machine. The tunnel lining is constructed as a two-pass system with the initial lining consisting of rock bolts, mesh, steel channels or ribs, and shotcrete, and the final lining consisting of pre-stressed cast-in-place concrete with a waterproof membrane. EnergyAustralia is a state-owned corporation in the state of New South Wales, whose responsibility includes ownership and management of an electricity distribution network. Expansion of the high voltage distribution network in the Sydney central business district (CBD) includes the requirement to run an additional five 132 kV feeders over 1.7 km from south of the CBD to a new 132 kV substation in the northern section of the CBD. A driven tunnel is currently being excavated in Sydney sandstone beneath Darling Harbour to contain the new 132 kV feeders. Tunnel construction methods involve both roadheader and tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation. This paper describes the design development of the cable tunnel, discusses the use of a geotechnical baseline report as an integral part of the contract documentation and provides an update of the current construction works.
