"Nd: YAG, KrF excimer, and Cu-vapor lasers are used in air to synthesize conductors and semiconductors as a second phase in silicon carbide and aluminum nitride. Conductor resistivities as low as 104 O-cm are formed in these substrates; the resistivities for the untreated substrates range from 10 11to 1014 O-cm. The silicon carbide conversion is relatively independent of wavelength while the aluminum nitride conversion shows a dependence on wavelength over the range 248 nm to 1064 nm. Silicon carbide conductors, evaluated over the range 15 K to greater than 300 K, exhibit metal like conductivity; resistivity increases with temperature. Silicon, carbon, and oxygen are identified as the principal chemical species associated with the conductor in SiC substrates while aluminum, nitrogen, and oxygen are identified as the principal chemical species associated with the conductor in aluminum nitride substrates. The silicon carbide system, which has the less complex phase diagram, is evaluated in more depth to explain the synthesis mechanism. Oxygen was principally on the surface and increasing SiC conductivity is associated with decreasing spacing between 5 µm, or less, diameter carbon globules. This technology is proposed as a replacement for metallization in electronic packages, sensors and devices. INTRODUCTIONCeramics are commonly used for multichip module, hybrid and multilayer electronic packaging; semiconductor device and sensor applications because of the insulating, conducting, semiconducting, or superconducting properties that these materials possess (1,2) The majority of ceramics, however, have not been known to exhibit conductive or semi conductive properties when exposed to rapid thermal heat processing. A ceramic and process which through selective conversion can combine two or more of these electrical properties to eliminate the need for metallization is of interest to both the commercial and military sectors."

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. It is a pleasure, for several reasons, to be here at this 13th International Conference on Ground Control in Mining. Of course it's always a pleasure to be able to see and reacquaint myself with many long-time friends; but it's also a pleasure, or 1 should say worthwhile, because I take something back with me, some knowledge about mining that lets me do my job better and more safely. if I can do that, I've accomplished my purpose in being at a conference such as this. This conference is a little different, though. I have to earn my stay. I have to earn it by telling you a story; a story about mining through a mile of rock to get from one coal seam to the same seam on the other side of an ancient river channel; a story about mine personnel taking over the job from a contractor; a story about having to mine through two faults after the hard part was supposed to be over, but, most importantly, it's a story about how it was accomplished successfully and safely by a group of ordinary coal miners possessed with determination, belief in themselves, and a "can do" attitude. If you can take any part of my story and use it to do your job better and more safely, then I will have accomplished my purpose in being here today. Kerr-McGee Coal Corporation's Galatia Mine is located in Southern Illinois near the town of Harrisburg in Saline County, about 350 miles south of Chicago and 120 miles southeast of St. Louis. Construction of the mine began in 1982, and the first coal was shipped in 1984 from the Harrisburg No. 5 Seam, 550' below the surface. Mining began in the Herrin No. 6 Seam, 100' above the No. 5 Seam, on April 1, 1985. Mining in both seams began by using the room-and-pillar method. In 1989, the No. 6 Seam was converted to longwall mining, as was the No. 5 Seam in 1992. Today, all mining is done by the longwall method except for the required development work, which is performed by continuous miners. A heavy-media preparation plant with a 4.2 million-ton annual clean-coal capacity processes the coal. By the end of 1994, with annual production now exceeding 4 million tons, we will have shipped over 30 million tons of steam and metallurgical coal throughout the United States and the world. Most of the coal has been used as the primary source of fuel to generate electricity for the city of St. Louis. The No. 5 Seam coal can be used as a semi-soft coking coal or as a high-Btu, relatively low-sulfur steam coal. Its use allows utilities to comply with Phase I of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 without installing flue gas desulfurization units or blending with other coals. The Herrin No. 6 Seam is a high-Btu, medium-sulfur steam coal that requires blending to meet Phase I requirements. Because the No, 6 Seam coal does not meet the Clean Air Act Amendments' Phase I compliance standards, we were forced to cease mining operations in the No. 6 Seam, leaving 170,000,000 tons of minable coal in the ground. Last month the Galatia Mine became a single-seam operation mining the Harrisburg No. 5 Seam only. The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 and the resultant S02 emission limitations on electrical power generation plants effectively eliminate, beginning in 1995, the near-term potential for profitable mining of the Galatia Mine's high sulfur Herrin No. 6 Seam coal. Because of the Clean Air Act Amendments, it is virtually impossible to market high-sulfur coals like the No. 6 coal unless the mine location and mining conditions enable greatly depressed sales prices to cover costs. A family of personal computer programs that calculate the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) has been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The CMRR rock mass classification system provides a link between the qualitative geologists' description of coal mine roof and the quantitive mine engineers' needs for mine design roof support selection, and hazard detection. The program CMRR is a user-friendly, interactive program into which raw field data are input. A CMRR is calculated and output along with two graphic displays. The first graphic display is a plan view trap with the CMRR's displayed on a color-coded scale. The second display shows a stratigraphic section of the bolted roof interval and its resultant CMRR. In addition, a Lotus 1-2-3 worksheet, computer file BOM-CMRR.WK3, has been developed for easy storage of field data. The worksheet includes four macros that automatically calculate CMRR's, store field test data in a database format, and print a two-page report of the field data and CMRR parameters. Production of summary port; for analysis of site-specific information are readily generated using Lotus 1-2-3 software. These programs help to facilitate the engineer in utilizing the CMRR in ground control studies.

The caisson foundation for Vent Building No. 6, at the southern landfall of Boston's Third Harbor Tunnel, was installed inside an unbraced concrete cofferdam 250 feet in diameter and about 70 feet deep. As a spectacular engineering feat, the cofferdam itself certainly ranks first. However, the foundation work within was no routine caisson job and made its own contribution to the state of the art. Comprised of 5 ft. diameter caissons socketed 10 to 16 feet in sound rock, it posed serious challenges in logistics, space limitations and time, requiring development of unique, purpose-made equipment. The unexpected discovery of significant depths of shattered rock overlying acceptable sound rock, along with other surprises of lesser import, compounded the problems. How these challenges were planned for, met and overcome is the subject of this paper.

The essence of an atomistic unified kinetic model of strained thin film growth and defect initiation is presented along with a comparison of its consequences obtained from computer simulations with experiments. Within the competing kinetics of a strain dependent activated incorporation of atoms and an asymmetry between upwards and downwards inter-layer migration, the model provides a consistent description of 2D versus 3D morphology evolution accompanied by the appearance of surface vacancies and steps at no energy cost. The correlated migration of these precursor defects offers an atomistic mechanism for the emergence of surface half-loops from the growth front (thus accounting for configurational and thermal entropy) governed by activation energies closer to their correlated motion under the evolving strain fields and thus substantially less than those calculated with respect to the perfect crystal as the reference state. The essential mechano-chemical nature of the problem is compared and contrasted with the historical literature of such phenomenon as precipitation hardening and sintering in metallic and ceramic composites.

The strength of anchorage of various types of roof bolts in permafrost depends on the types of rock in which they are installed. Variation in the mine thermal regime results in weakening of the roof and walls, and at times total loss of ice cement bonds takes place in the surrounding rockmass. In mines with positive ventilation air temperature, the wedge or expansion types of bolts may become weakened due to the transfer of heat into the anchorage through the metal rod and subsequent thawing of rocks. Effective operation and evaluation of roof bolt systems for mine workings in permafrost require predictions of the dynamics of wall thawing by warm ventilation air. With increasing land development, the potential of fatalities from abandoned mine shafts increases. To minimize potential liability, shaft closure should be a critical part of mined land reclamation. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research into using lightweight foam concrete in sealing abandoned coal mine shafts. A demonstration seal consisted of a 3m thick foam concrete plug to provide lateral stability inside the shaft. A high density concrete cap provided load-bearing capacity for a 100-year service life. The USBM has also completed research into changes in foam concrete when it is pumped or dropped from different heights. It is concluded from the research that foam concrete can undergo significant air loss with pumping or dropping. This foretells significant changes in the characteristics of the concrete as well as an increase in the weight and cost of the in-place concrete seal. When using foam concrete to seal abandoned mine shafts, care must be taken to minimize air loss during placement.

The first major project in Boston's new access to Logan Airport was an Immersed Tube Tunnel which extended 3,600 ft. from South Boston to East Boston across Boston Harbor. Twelve tube sections, 300 ft. long x 80 ft. wide x 40 ft. high, were lowered into an excavated trench which was then backfilled. The depth of the trench at mid-channel was approximately 100 ft. below mean high tide. At the East Boston end the tube terminated close to the present shoreline. At the South Boston end the tube terminated approximately 600 ft. inland from the shore line where a ventilation building was required. The depth to subgrade from existing ground at the ventilation structure was approximately 85 ft. The soil profile at this location consisted of 50 ft. of miscellaneous rubble fill, 25 ft. of Boston blue clay, and 10 ft. of glacial till. A small amount of weathered argellite existed at the north end of the structure. Part of the Morrison Knudsen, Interbeton, J.F. White, Joint Venture contract to construct the Immersed Tube Tunnel (ITT) was the construction of a cofferdam at the tube/ventilation building interface. The ventilation building was to be built as part of another contract. The construction of the cofferdam and the excavation to the building subgrade was the responsibility of J.F. White Contracting Company.

To develop an in-mine water treatment system in which bacterial sulfate reduction and limestone dissolution continuously remove metals and acidity from contaminated drainage. Approach A section of mine tunnel was converted into a water treatment bioreactor by constructing cinder block dams and fang the area between them with a porous substrate mixture of limestone gravel and compost. Readily fermentable materials such as dairy whey, spent brewing yeast, or sugar were periodically added to the reactor. Mine drainage was impounded behind one of the dams and continuously percolates through the reactor substrate at a controlled rate. How It Works The reactor substrate soon becomes anaerobic after it is saturated with mine water. Under anaerobic conditions, sulfate-reducing bacteria consume the organic materials that are added to the reactor and generate hydrogen sulfide (HIS) and alkalinity. The H2S reacts with dissolved iron and heavy metals to form metal sulfide precipitates. The alkalinity raises the pH of the water and induces aluminum to hydrolyze and precipitate as aluminum hydroxide [Al(OH)3]. Additional alkalinity is generated by the continuous dissolution of the substrate limestone. Metal sulfide precipitates and Al(OH)3 are retained within the reactor, and the treated water is discharged. The underground location of the system allows year round operation.

Using a Three Dimensional Laser Profiler, persomrel from Austin Powder were able to determine drilling patterns for use in underground mine Room and Pillar blasting operations, The faces had got out of alignment, causing concave faces across the 100 feet wide, 28 feet high tunnels. This was leading to poor drilling and poor blasting results. By profiling the faces, modifications could be made to the drilling pattern to help gradually straighten the faces. The Laser Profiler was also used to check the accuracy of collaring the holes and also perform post blast surveying of the positions of the bootlegs. This allowed recommendations to be made to improve drilling operations at the face. In addition, other volumetric calculations could be performed using the systems’ surveying software, all a lot more easily and quickly than by standard methods.

The face area of a continuous mining section of an underground coal mine is the most dangerous area in the mine. Workers there are at nearly twice the risk of death or disabling injury than those in other parts of the mine. Despite extensive training of miners and improved equipment and mining methods, fatality and injury rates have remained constant during the past few years. It is clear that advanced research is necessary to apply new technologies or modify work procedures to solve the continuing problem of the loss of lives and the numerous injuries at the mine face. A U.S. Bureau of Mines research program is developing a Reduced-Exposure Mining System (REMS) that relocates personnel operating the mining machinery at the face away from the hazards to a nearby haven of relative safety. REMS uses proven technologies of computer automation and robotics to help control the operation of the mining machines at the face, while personnel are moved away to a nearby, safe control room. In this protected, well-ventilated environment, they can supervise or control the operation of the machines while viewing what the machine is doing using video and graphic display monitors.

Kyanite. andalusite, and sillimanite are anhydrous aluminum silicate minerals, and they have the same chemical formula, Al2SiO3. Dumortierite and topaz are also classified as aluminum silicates although they contain boron and fluorine respectively. Mullite (a rare mineral named for its discovery site, the Scottish island of Mull) is produced when kyanite, andalusite, or sillimanite are heated. Synthetic mullite, also classified as an aluminum silicate, is formed by melting alumina and silica, bauxite, and kaolin or alumina, kaolin, and kyanite, depending on the type of synthetic mullite desired. These materials are either sintered in rotary, periodic, or tunnel kilns, or fused in an electric arc furnace. The world's largest producer of kyanite is the United States. Domestic kyanite is presently produced from one company at two sites in Virginia; Kyanite Mining Corporation mines kyanite from Willis Mountain and adjacent East Ridge in Buckingham County in the central Piedmont province of Virginia. Internationally, kymite is produced in Australia, Brazil, India, Kenya, Sweden, and Zimbabwe; the former USSR also produces kyanite (Fig. 1). Andalusite is produced by Piedmont Minerals Company, Inc. in the Piedmont province near Hillsborough, NC. Andalusite is also produced in France, India, the Republic of South Africa, and Spain (Fig. 1). Sillimanite is produced in Australia, Brazil, India, Spain, and the Republic of South Africa; the former USSR is also thought to be a major producer (Fig. 1). Some of the countries produce only for domestic use. Synthetic mullite, made by sintering and by electric arc fusion, is produced by Mulcoa (Mullite Company of America) in Andersonville, GA, and by Washington Mills Electro Minerals Corporation in Niagara Falls, NY. Annual world production of kyanite, andalusite, sillimanite, and synthetic mullite is approximately 672 727 tons (Potter, 1988). GEOLOGY Mineralogy Kyanite is a blue to light-green, triclinic mineral that occurs in long, thin-bladed crystals and crystalline aggregates in gneiss, schist, and pegmatites. The mineral has a hardness of 5 parallel to the long axis of the crystal and a hardness of 7 across the crystal. Andalusite is a yellow, brown, green, or red orthorhombic mineral that occurs in thick, almost square prisms in schist, gneiss, and hornfels. Gem quality andalusite exhibits a strong pleochroism; brownish-green in one direction and brownish-red perpendicular to it. Andalusite also occurs in placer concentrations where it has weathered out of rock. Sillimanite is a brown, pale-green, gray, or white orthorhombic mineral that occurs in long, slender, needlelike crystals in schist and gneiss. Chemical and Physical Properties Chemical and physical properties of kyanite, andalusite, and sillimanite are noted in Table 1. Kyanite is the only mineral that irreversibly expands when heated (calcined to produce mullite) and may offset the shrinkage of most ceramic or refractory ingredients when heated.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines formed a team in 1991 to begin developing a long-range research plan for computer-assisted mining that would benefit the metal-nonmetal mining industry. This report details the team's accomplishments, specifically, the development of a model that identifies metal-nonmetal mining research needs that could be addressed by the application of automation technology. The report also provides a summary of automation needs and applications based on visits with mining company representatives. The status and future direction of this work is also presented.

In 1989 natural industrial diamonds counted for 55% of the world's natural diamond production. Australia is currently the leading producer (35%). Zaire is the second largest producer (19%). of what is primarily industrial grade rather than gem grade. Botswana (17%) is third, with the former USSR (15%) fourth, and the Republic of South Africa (8%) fifth. Diamonds are also mined in Angola, Namibia, the Ivory Coast, the Central African Republic, Ghana, Tanzania, Guinea, and other African countries. In the Western Hemisphere, Brazil is the principal producer, with some production from Venezuela and Guyana [(Fig. 1)]. A very small output of diamonds is mined today in India, which was the first source of commercial production. In the United States, efforts at commercial diamond mining have been confined to a small area near Murfreesboro, AR. The first diamond was found in a pipe there in 1906. Small scale trial mining has not, however, proved economical. Since diamonds were first discovered more than 2,000 years ago, only about 380 t have been mined. In order to obtain 1 g (5 metric carats) of diamonds, it is necessary to remove and process approximately 25 t of rock. Recovering this small percentage involves a combination of highly developed techniques in mining and extremely sophisticated processes in diamond recovery. END USES Diamonds are used for two unrelated end uses: gem diamonds are jewels of great beauty, while industrial diamonds are essential materials of modem industry. Although imitation stones are substituted for the gem diamond, none of these matches its properties sufficiently well to offer real competition. Synthetic industrial diamonds are now of a quality and size that permit them to be substituted for natural diamonds in numerous industrial applications. For example, synthetic diamonds are available today in sizes up to 100 stones per carat (1.2 to 1.4 mm). In addition, polycrystalline synthetic diamond inserts, such as De Beers Syndite", General Electric's Compaxa and Stratapax", and Megadiamond's Megapax" have replaced natural diamonds in turning tools, mining and oil drilling bits, and dressing tool applications. Industrial Diamonds The diamond is by far the most important industrial abrasive. As recently as 50 years ago, consumption of industrial diamonds was less than that of gem diamonds, but since that time, industrial use has grown to a position of great dominance. During the six-year period 1929 to 1934, the material produced for industrial use amounted to about 74% by weight of the world's total output of diamonds. In 1989 the percentage of natural industrial diamonds mined in the world was 55%. When synthetic industrial diamonds are added to the natural industrial diamond figures, this percentage becomes 87% of total world diamond production including gems, near gems, industrial, and synthetic stones. The many uses responsible for these significant increases are dependent on the properties of the diamond, including hardness, cleavage, and parting, optical characteristics, presence of sharp points and edges, and capacity for taking and maintaining a high polish. The utilitarian role of the diamond was confined primarily to lapidary products until the industrial revolution, which created the first demand for diamond as an industrial tool. In 1777, a British inventor and instrument maker, Jesse Ramsden, used a diamond to cut a precision screw for an engine that he had invented. The first authentic description of industrial diamonds being set in a saw was recorded in 1854 by a Frenchman, Durnain. Eight years later a Swiss watchmaker, Jean Leschot, developed the first diamond drill bit for use in a hand operated machine, which was employed to drill blastholes in rock. In 1864, diamond bits were put to their severest test up to that time in the construction of the Mont Cenis Tunnel in the Alps. A few years later a steam-powered diamond drill with a speed of 30 rpm was able to penetrate rock at the modest rate of 0.3 m/hr. As the industrial revolution gained momentum on both sides of the Atlantic, metal replaced wood and machines replaced people. Thus the foundation was laid for precision engineering and the recognition of diamonds as an indispensable tool of industry. The next major demand for industrial diamonds came after World War I with the development of cemented carbide cutting tools. Diamond was found to be the most effective medium for finishing and grinding the new ultrahard metal. This discovery rapidly increased the demand for industrial diamonds. The availability of inexpensive diamond material inspired tremendous research into applications. By 1935, the first successful phenol-resin grinding wheel containing diamond had been marketed. Soon afterward, the metal-bonded and vitrified diamond wheels were produced, and, as the matrices and bonds that held the diamond grit in place began to improve, the popularity of diamond grinding wheels grew. The outbreak of World War II, and the accompanying increase in use of hard-metal tools in the munitions industry, increased the demand for industrial diamonds. Since about 1950, the development of ultrahard ceramics, semi- conductor materials, plastics, and exotic metal alloys has further consolidated the diamond's position as an indispensable tool of industry. Only diamond is hard enough to cut these superhard materials with the precision, speed, and economy that industry demands today. Special machines equipped with industrial diamonds are used to remove bumps from concrete runways and highways and to modify highway surfaces in order to prevent skid accidents. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, USBM reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that: appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in "" proceedings of conventions and seminars; in' reference books; and in other non-USBM publications. TETRA Technologies, Inc., has applied its HDS? metals precipitation system to control a mine drainage problem. The effluent from the mine contains primarily zinc, manganese and iron, plus varying small amounts of cadmium, copper and lead. The flow from the mine averages 350 gpm, and varies considerably depending on season and weather conditions. The plant was designed to treat 1000 gpm of the water and generate a dense sludge suitable for recycling. The HDS? system contains a number of reactors, followed by post filtration and meets stringent metals discharge criteria as specified by New Source Performance Standards.

One of the largest scale uses of a multiple, high-strength steel bar tiedown system is described. Tiedowns were installed to resist hydrostatic uplift forces acting on a section of the Interstate Highway Route I-90 southern approach roadway to the Third Harbor Tunnel, in Boston, Massachusetts. Site specific information is discussed regarding design, testing, and installation of Tiedowns. Conclusions are presented regarding the overall performance of this system and the application of this type of tiedown system on future projects.

The article illustrates the Hydromill technology, as applied in urban sites, and its advantages in terms of quality of the end product, mitigation of the construction impact, and optimization of the logistics at the site. Also highlighted are the main features of the excavation equipment and slurry treatment plant. Two recent urban applications of this technology in Europe are briefly described, together with the forthcoming application to the Central Artery/Tunnel Project in Boston. Introduction The Hydromill technology has been used extensively in Europe in the last decade for slurry wall construction in urban environments. In Italy, this technology has been applied by Ing. Giovanni Rodio & C., Impresa Costruzioni Speciali S.p.A. in two large projects. The first project is the construction of Stations Darsena and San Giorgio of the first metro line in Genova. The second project is the "Cut-and Cover" tunnel for the railway link in Torino. Hydromill technology will be used for the construction of the Soldier Pile Tremie Concrete walls of the Boston Central Artery Tunnel Project, contract C14C2, Utility Relocation at Fulton Street.

Production at Freeport Indonesia's Ertsberg open pit copper/gold mine started in 1972 at a rate of 7500 t/d. Mill throughput remained at that rate for a number of years until the discovery of the Ertsberg East (GBT) orebody. This discovery prompted three successive expansion stages from 1981 to 1988 that boosted production to 20,000 t/d. The discovery of the huge Grasberg porphyry copper deposit in 1988 launched a new era of much larger expansions. The first of these involved installation of a fourth primary mill in 1989 to bring production up to 32,000 t/d and was immediately followed by an expansion of the crushing and screening plant and the addition of a new south concentrator to bring production to 57,000 t/d in 1991. The addition of a primary ball mill and the changeout of the original Denver flotation cells in 1993 has served to optimize current production at a level of 66,000 t/d. A major expansion is now in progress. This includes construction of another new concentrator to house a SAG mill circuit and large Wemco flotation cells in an area created by the removal of 6,000,000t of glacial material. This current expansion, with a planned completion in 1995, will take production to 115,000 t/d. This paper describes the evolution of the Freeport Indonesia (FI) concentrator to-date and will then go into an in-depth discussion of the 66,000 and 115,000 t/d expansions.
