SUMMARY In August 1986, TRANSMANCHE LINK, a joint venture comprising the 10 companies who initially promoted the project, signed a contract with EUROTUNNEL for the design, construction and commissioning of the TRANSMANCHE fixed link for an amount of 4,5 billion dollars. On the French side, the work consists of digging three, 19km. long tunnels, of which almost 16 kms. are under the sea, up to the meeting point with the Tunnel works carried out by the British.. The tunnels are bored through chalk by 5 tunnelling machines, starting from one intermediate point at Sangatte near the coast: - Landward, they are drilled trough permeable strata of white and grey chalk. - Seaward, mainly through relatively impermeable chalk marl, but with the presence of water in faulted zones, or in grey chalk.

Shotcrete is used both in mining and tunnelling for supporting rock. Both dry and wet processes are used for shotcreting, and each produces good quality concrete. Thick shotcrete layers function as a concrete arch supporting loose rock. Thin layers prevent relative movements between the blocks of rock due to the fine concrete in the cracks and joints. No progressive fallouts occur since key blocks are kept in place. Rockbolts are often used together with shotcrete in order to create an arch around the tunnel making the rock to support itself. Shotcrete is sprayed either manually or by means of mechanized equipment. The aim is to spray required the layer thickness in one pass and with a minimum amount of rebound. Sprayed layers should also be as even as possible. The tip of the nozzle should be moved in circular movements. The shotcrete should be sprayed at a right angle to the rock surface; the optimum distance from the nozzle to the application surface must be found by experiment. In a mine shotcreting forms a materials handling system which includes batching, transporting and the actual shotcreting. The equipment used vary depending on the spraying method, mining conditions and the location of the mine. Shotcreting is performed with a purpose-designed unit in most cases where operation is mechanized. The shotcreting unit consists of a spraying machine with a hose and a nozzle, an additive system, a manipulator and a mobile carrier with all the necessary controls and accessories. The key element of the unit is the shotcreting manipulator which holds and guides the nozzle as required. The manipulators currently in use are hydraulically operated, and their remote controlled booms are also often called robots. These manipulators have enabled users to increase their output capacities, to remove the operator away from unsafe areas and from the influence of dust and rebound. Furthermore, they improve the shotcrete quality and reduce shotcreting costs.

MgO is routinely used as the basis for refractory materials, however, its susceptibility to hydration may result in dimensional instability and subsequent failure. The addition of boron has been shown to reduce th,e hydration susceptibility of MgO yet its dissolution into certain grades of steel may degrade their performance. In order to predict the efficacy of reducing hydration susceptibility by the incorporation of mono-, di-and tri-and quadravalent cations, the lattices of various cation-substituted systems were modeled. To more accurately simulate the substituted lattices, either cation or anion vacancies were incorporated to maintain electrical neutrality and all possible arrangements of defects in a 2x2x2 MgO supercell were investigated. Correlations were then made between the lattice energies of these systems and their susceptibility to hydration as reported in the literature. The results indicate the presence of higher charged cations tended to increase lattice stability while the cations with lower valency tended to have lower lattice energies. The relatively small body of experimental results available in the literature are consistent' with this study's results.

Regular entry trusses are used in headgates, tailgates, roadways and intensely-faulted areas. These trusses have proven to give the required support and maintain roof stability even under major abutment loading conditions for both the re-treating and advancing longwalls. Areas previously requiring steel arches have been eliminated. A special Continuous Entry Truss? provides permanent support to adjacent tunnel/crosscut zone for more than 300 feet in each tunnel. The continuous nature of the tensioned truss allows sup-port forces to be placed on the roof in not just the two-dimensions of regular trusses, but in a full three-dimensions. A newly developed Roktruss? provides support in an arched 30-foot high rock zone. The Roktruss? allows truss support concepts to be used in an opening with a curved roof.

Two 8.2 m diameter flood control tunnels are being constructed in the Taylor Shale Formation beneath San Antonio, Texas. These tunnels use precast concrete segments as final lining. This paper describes the features of the segments chosen for this project. The tunnels are being excavated with a hybrid Tunnel Boring Machine. This paper also describes the features of the TBM which make the machine compatible to the type of segments chosen.

INTRODUCTION A team effort by the Owner, Engineer, and Contractor can help avoid serious problems on a construction project. It can save cost and time for both Owner and Contractor, as illustrated in the following case history of the West Zone and Siouf Keblia Collector System in Alexandria, Egypt (Contract 02-AID-83/84). Under the bilateral agreement made in 1980 between the United States of America and the Arab Republic of Egypt, the United States, through the Agency of International Development (USAID), gives approximately $1 billion per year as a grant to Egypt for various development projects. The Alexandria Wastewater Management System was selected in 1981 as one such project. The Egyptian Government Agency responsible for this work is the Alexandria General Organization for Sanitary Drainage (AGOSD). A joint venture of two U.S. consulting engineering firms, CH2M HILL, Inc., and Metcalf & Eddy, Inc., called Wastewater Consultants Group, along with two local subconsultants, Engineering Consulting Group and Warith Engineering Co., were selected by AGOSD to study the sewer system and develop a plan to serve the immediate and long-range sewage disposal needs of Alexandria. Wastewater Consultants Group is currently involved in Phase I of the Master Plan. This initial step in providing Alexandria with an operating sewerage system for the current and near-term population (year 2000) consists of the design and construction management of 140 kilometers of collector and force main pipelines (including 9 miles of pipe jacking and tunneling in very soft clay), five new pumping stations, extensive rehabilitation of two treatment plants (built in the 1960s but never operated successfully), and installation of a sludge handling system. Phase I is scheduled to be completed by the end of 1991 at a total cost of around $250 million (US) plus 250 million

The Zurichberg twin track tunnel is the main segment of the Swiss Federal Railway's new expressline. A heavy concrete lining with a circular cross-section was chosen to cope with the swelling tendency of the surrounding rock. The 4,356 m (14,300 ft) long, 11.52 m (38 ft) diameter tunnel was driven using a shielded Robbins TBM. A 1.20 m (4 ft) wide, 25 cm (10 in) thick precast lining was placed from within the shield tail as the excavation progressed. Tunnel excavation and initial lining operation were completed in 18 months, averaging 11.86 m/day (40 ft/day) in two nine hour shifts. After breaking through, the final 28 cm (11 in) thick concrete arch lining was cast in place.

The Coastal Water Authority's 2,740mm/2,590mm (108 in./102 in.) pipeline, known as the Northwest Lateral Project, will transport raw water from an existing pipeline over 14.3 km (8.9 miles) to the City of Houston's East Water Purification Plant. The new pipeline crosses under Houston Ship Channel and Greens Bayou in tunnels at approximately 30.5m (100 feet) and 25.9m (85 feet) depths, which present unique experiences in tunneling under open bodies of water in the Gulf Coast's soft ground conditions. An earth pressure balance TBM is being used for the deep tunnel sections where the ground demonstrates high overload factors and variable conditions ranging from clays to silty sands. This paper discusses the design approach for the tunnels and shafts, ground conditions, constructability, and selection of the primary lining system.

This report describes a smoke particle detector which utilizes a novel three electrode configuration and 5.0 [] source of Americium 241. The detector operates on the principle of diffusional charging by a region of unipolar molecular ions. The detector is sensitive to particle concentrations in the range of 10 to 5 20 ug/m3. The detector is intended for use primarily as an early warning fire detector but has the potential for other applications of particulate monitoring. In particular, this report adresses the potential use of the detector for monitoring diesel particulate matter (DPM). To assess the viability of this application, particle size data obtained from in-mine sampling of both DPM and dust were used to derive detector sensitivity functions for DPM and dust as a function of their mass concentrations only. These sensitivity functions are dependent upon the average diameters and size distributions of the DPM and dust. Using the derived sensitivity function for DPM, experiments were conducted in a ventilated tunnel where the true DPM mass concentrations, measured using a Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) were compared to the mass concentrations calculated using the detector sensitivity function. The agreement between the two measurements was good, indicating that with additional experiments, coupled with in-mine evaluation of the detector, refinement of the device for use as a continuous monitor for DPM appears feasible.

Underground rock drilling has gone through intense development during the last 25 years. Mechanization and hydraulics have greatly increased the efficiency of drilling and improved the environment of the drill operator. As the total economy has become more and more important, the development has resulted in greater overall economy in drilling. The latest evolution step is computerization of drilling equipment. Computerization has been applied to tunnelling jumbos, long- hole drilling rigs and bolting rigs. With today's technology computerization is the natural way to increase capacity and productivity of the drilling process. However, it is still impractical to implement total "robotic" drilling. In computerized drilling the operator's role continues to be vital in controlling the drilling process and in analyzing the effect of individual parameters on the whole excavation process. Today this is called "CAD" - Computer Aided Drilling.

Conventional methods of controlling abandoned mine fires include: loading out, inundation, fire barriers, flushing, and surface sealing. This paper describes a proposed fire-control technique utilizing a new explosive fragmentation method. An impervious barrier is created by using explosive energy and strategic emplacement in boreholes drilled from the surface. Blast round design, average fragment size, and impermeability of the fragmentation barrier are discussed. This barrier, created by the blasted floor rock, could also be used to fill in the open space in abandoned mines for subsidence prevention or control.

Cleveland's Southwest Interceptor Contracts No. 3 and No. 4 are continuations of Contract No. 1 addressed at the 1987 RETC with geology, equipment, and methods that differ greatly. The two contracts consist of 791 m (4.22 miles) of 3.5 m (11.5 ft) tunnel lined to 2.9 m (9.5 ft), nine access shafts, six drop shafts, and six collection structures. The excavation drive was completed by the use of a 1970 vintage Robbins TBM hybrid for this particular job through the use of both new and old technology. All other excavations were successfully accomplished through drill and blast method in tight residential areas. Concrete lining and connections were completed nine months after holing through.

Information gained at the site investigation stage of the Carsington aqueduct project led the designers to suspect that methane might be encountered during tunnelling and therefore gas detection techniques, including emergency shutdown systems, were introduced. After construction, on completion of the excavation and lining of the tunnels, a survey showed that methane was entering the aqueduct dissolved in infiltrating groundwater. General body air concentrations were very low but on closure methane concentrations rose rapidly within the aqueduct. A research project has now been initiated to investigate the mechanism of methane generation and entry rate into the system, the results of which are being taken into account in the preparation of future operating procedures.

The paper describes the arrangements for the casting, curing and handling at the casting yard, of the concrete segments for the lining of the UK half of the tunnel, and the plant used for the handling of these linings at the construction site. An outline of the tunnel boring machines being used is given, with particular reference to lining handling and erection, and the extensive muck disposal systems installed. "Although silicosis has been studied extensively, the mechanism is still not fully under stood. Experiments do provide evidence that the actions of unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of silicotic processes. This paper summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica surface, and the effect of particle size on silica toxicity. This paper also discusses the ways in which silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on freshness, hydrogen bonding, and free-radical interactions.INTRODUCTIONSilicosis is a debilitating pulmonary disease that afflicts persons (miners, foundry workers, ceramic workers, heavy construction workers, etc.) who chronically inhale silica-containing dusts (Schepers, 1960; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). Since silica is second only to oxygen in weight percentage of the earth's crust (about 28%) and is found in an enormous diversity of minerals, it is natural that silicosis is one of the Major industrial health hazards all over the world. Although silicosis has been studied extensively, the mechanism by which the dusts exert their toxic actions on cells and the processes by which these-actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly understood. The biological characteristics of the dusts are largely unknown, although it is suggested that the dust size, shape, surface charge, roughness, surface chemical composition, trace metal content, and crystallinity; dose of silica in the ambient air of the workplace; duration of exposure; genetic variation in exposed sub¬jects; personal respiratory patterns; and presence of any coexisting dis¬ease (such as tuberculosis or rheumatoid arthritis) all influence the ex¬pression of silicosis (Koskinen et al., 1983; Noweir et al., 1980; Raask and Schilling, 1980; Reiser and Last, 1979; Thorne et al., 1985; Wolff et al., 1981). The actual biochemical mechanisms through which these factors operate are still unclear. However, the experiments do provide evidence that the actions of certain unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of the silicotic process (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Marks, 1957; Parazzi et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Summerton et al., 1977). The behavior of fire and airflows in a confined tunnel differ significantly from more familiar fire situations outside, due to the buoyant effect which tends to create a layer of hot smoke and gases flowing away from the fire near the crown of the tunnel, while air supporting combustion moves toward the fire beneath the smoke layer. A subway emergency ventilation system is designed to force air to flow through the tunnel, shifting the balance of heated air in the direction of the forced flow and avoiding the "back-layering" of hot gases and fumes. This paper presents a computer program, called the "Subway Environment Simulation" (SES), which can be used to predict airflows created by the emergency ventilation system. It utilizes the latest state-of-the-art analytical treatment of fires in enclosed spaces, including observations from mine fires and gas explosions. The program allows designers to reduce construction cost by identifying unnecessary ventilation shafts and by verifying fan capacities. In addition, the program allows the designers and operators to determine safe evacuation routes, in case of a train fire, by predicting the occurrence of back-layering. It can be used to determine when the ventilation system can control the direction of smoke movement to provide a clear and safe path for evacuating people and facilitate fire fighting operations.

Computer controlled drilling is now proven technology. It was first introduced by the development of the Furuholmen system for a prototype three boom tunneling jumbo in Norway in 1978. Now, 13 rigs with this concept are in operation in Europe, 3. in mining in England and. 10 in tunneling elsewhere in Europe. The system is also adapted to roadheader guidance. Practical experience has shown that the computer control system makes it possible to drive tunnels with a more accurate contour thus reducing the total amount of rock excavated, and where a full concrete lining is required a reduction in concrete volume is achieved. The total tunneling economy is improved. In the future we expect to see a wider range of instrumentation on jumbos, from the simple direction instruments to computer guidance systems for monitoring only, as well as fully automatic drilling to a programmed drilling pattern. More compact and reliable electronics will be available. Systems with low power consumption will fit easily into flameproof applications. Cabling complexity will be reduced by connection of sensors to serial signal lines.

Waterbearing, cohesive or non-cohesive grounds with glacial stone deposits are found very often in Europe. The problem consists of destroying the boulders and supporting the face simultaneously. At the example Grauholztunnel Bern ( outer diameter 11,60 m ) the theoretical attempt of solutions for the big machines is described: destroying of the boulders with roller discs, hydraulical support of the front. The problem of coming out of stones of a certain size from the surrounding matrix will be discussed. Further diminishing to the size that can be handled by pumps is executed by a crusher, situated in the center of the machine. At the same example the theoretical attempt for headings in cohesive soil with stone deposits are shown. Surface structure of the cutting wheel and working chamber as well as controllable current movements are the solution here. The danger of clogging discs and stone crusher has to be encountered by right positioning of the tools and jetting nozzles. At the example Sewer MoosstraBe Salzburg the same problems are discussed for the Mikro-Tunnels. The pipe-jacked sewer lines have outer diameters from 485 and 805 mm. "Coal mine dust research throughout the world has been stimulated by the recognition of its importance in the development of coal miners' diseases, particularly coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). A historical look at the problem and the present state of knowledge in this area of importance to the worldwide coal industry is presented. A summary of progress made in this area is provided and some research ideas for the future are discussed.1. INTRODUCTIONI thank Dr. Yong Won John, President of the Korean Institute of Mineral and Mining Engineers, for his invitation to address the International Symposium on Coal Mining and Safety. This presents me with an interesting opportunity to take a broad look at the research in coal mine dust and where we are going. From this broad perspective, we can all view the progress and problems that are apparent in the present state of knowledge of coal mine dust. One important element in the review of coal mine dust research and its role in miners' diseases is that of its history. The existence of diseases attributed to the mine atmosphere is often traced back to Pliny the younger in the first century A.D. His work on natural history mentioned observed human effects attributed to mine fumes and vapors. However, the subject of the effects of dust in the mine was not mentioned in published literature until 1556 when Agricola discussed the ailments of miners in his day (Seaton 1975).For many centuries, many medical ailments of the lungs were often categorized together and distinct diseases were often not recognized until more modern times. The ability to distinguish different lung diseases was limited until the discovery of X-rays in 1986. Nonetheless, Zenker in 1866 applied the term pneumonokoniosis to any disease where dust gathers in the lymphatic depots of the lungs. This term was changed to pneumoconiosis in 1932. While pneumoconiosis was defined in the 1800s, scant attention was paid to control of miners' diseases until recent decades. The first attempt to control disease through control of the mine atmosphere has been attributed to the South Africans who instituted a silica control in 1910 (Drinker and Hatch 1954)."

Asbestos is a generic term for industrially useful fibers recovered from exploitable deposits of the asbestiform varieties of five silicate minerals: chrysotile, anthophyllite, actinolite-tremolite, cummingtonite-grunerite, and riebeckite. Asbestos and asbestiformm fibers of some other minerals are known to be carcinogenic. Minerals crystallized in the asbestiform habit are characterized by unique properties (morphology, strength and flexibility, physical and chemical durability, and defect-free surface structures). The key to the unusual properties, and health effects, of asbestifarm fibers appears to be in their unusual surface structure. In contrast, non-asbestiform crystals of the same minerals, including the five so-called asbestos minerals do not have these properties and are not carcinogenic (1, 2).
