The Underground Research Laboratory (URL) , a major geotechnical research facility, is currently being developed by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) , 120 km northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The URL is part of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program, which is assessing the concept of nuclear fuel waste disposal in a vault deep in stable plutonic rock of the Canadian Shield (Simmons, 1986). Comprehensive geotechnical research and development activities are being carried out in conjunction with excavation? and construction of the underground facilities.

This paper reviews difficult ground conditions encountered along the alignment of large-diameter sewage tunnels for the City of Los Angeles. It offers a detailed one-of-a-kind solution to a unique problem for shallow urban underground tunnels in a seismic zone, using state-of-the-art materials, technology, and equipment. "In recent years the trend in underground metal mining has been toward ever increasing blasts (often in excess of 100 000 tonnes per blast). The Canadian mining industry has been in the forefront of these developments (VRM, LBHand cable bolting to stabilize the surrounding rock /avoid dilution).In order to move these large tonnages, efficient loading systems have to be developed. This paper shows the technical and economic implications of various loading scenarios based on a predefined (however typical) stoping layout by:1 . discontinuous loading using scoop trams;2. discontinuous loading using scoop trams in combination with low profile dump trucks;3. continuous loading (based on loading performance/operating costs of the AL-60) in combination with low profile dumptrucks.The cost advantages of production concentration (loading large tonnages from one drawpoint}, made possible by continuous loading as opposed to sea tiered mining (small tonnages), using discontinuous loading in tunnelling will be presented, based on actual results obtained in a decline development project using the A L-60 continuous loader. At as pacing oj150m between turning bays, it was found that continuous loading was out performing discontinuous loading in approximately80% of the overall decline development.Fuel consumption and total cycle times are compared, and a cost assessment is presented.INTRODUCTIONThe subject of this paper deals with the introduction of continuous loading in underground metal mining and single heading tunnelingContinous mining has been widely introduced both in underground and surface coal mining. Mechanized longwall mining, utilizing moveable shield supports in combination with double drum- shearers, has resulted in a tremendous increase of coal production per working face.This has led to very concentrated mining operations. In a typical German coal mine two mechanized longwalls nowadays would produce the same amount of coal as 12 to 15 longwalls in the 1950s. One longwall in a South African coal mine has recently set a world record with 120 000 tonnes of coal in a single month.In underground metal mines-often due to the irregular nature of the ore body and the mining methods used-mining is far less concent rated. Ore is often produced from a large number of stopes and production sections. Sometimes, a substantial amount of ore may be obtained from development in the orebody (40070 at a German base metal mine)."

This paper describes the development and testing of the RAMEX excavation system. Incorporating a synergy of low velocity, high energy impact and kerf cutting, this machine offers a competitive alternative to drilling and blasting in hard rock. It is a boom mining machine that incorporates the features of a lightweight roadheader and it can mine nearly any shape opening in hard rock. The RAMEX Tunneler has been developed to satisfy industry demands for a non-explosive, flexible, continuous and rapid underground rock excavation system. It will produce minimum ground vibration in the urban environment and allow the flexibility necessary for thin seam mining conditions. It will also reduce initial ground support costs and has a minimum impact on rock integrity. Developed by RAMEX Systems with cooperative research provided by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, this system, could produce the next step in the continuing evolution of mechanical mining systems.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has developed a hardrock cutting concept and incorporated it into an extraction system called the ripper miner. This concept uses a single, wide bit that attacks the rock at a shallow angle and slow speed. Research has demonstrated that the system is capable of excavation rates exceeding those possible with conventional drill-blast and can effectively cut rock too hard for conventional roadheaders or continuous mining machines. It has the additional advantages of low bit wear and dust generation. This highly flexible concept is applicable to both mining and driving development openings and can cut any material from coal to hard rock. A single rip-per miner can perform the functions of a continuous mining machine, a roadheader excavator, and a tunnel boring machine. This paper presents the history of the development of the ripper miner from the initial laboratory tests through the construction and testing of the full-scale, lab prototype. It includes a comparison of the ripper miner to systems currently used from the standpoint of energy efficiencies and operating costs.

The World Financial Center is situated on a 60,000 square meter site at Battery Park City at the southern tip of Manhattan Island. The foundations for the buildings and the related infrastructure posed difficult design and construction problems since the site was filled land in the Hudson (North) River. Foundation construction was made difficult by both the geology and the existence of two railroad tunnels which passed under the site. The soils at the site were unsuitable to support construction of heavy structures, and as a result, all of the foundations had to be carried down to bedrock, or the glacial till over rock. Two buildings were supported on piling and special battered caissons which provided lateral support against wind loading. The other two buildings were supported directly on rock, requiring excavation to depths of 19 meters (63 feet) below grade.

INTRODUCTION The first phase of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project consists of 7.1 km (4.4 miles) of subway and stations running through downtown Los Angeles from Union Station to MacArthur Park. Shank-Ohbayashi has two of the tunnelling contracts on this initial phase: A-171 and A-146. Contract A-171, the Wilshire/Alvarado Line, involves tunnel construction beneath 7th Street from the 7th/Flower Station to the Wilshire/Alvarado Station. The project consists of the excavation and lining of 3000 m (9900 ft) of twin-bore, 6.7 m (22 ft) excavated diameter, 5.5 m (18 ft) finished diameter subway tunnels. Contract A-146, the 5th/Hill to 7th/Flower Tunnels, comprises 1220 m (4000 L.F.) of twin-bore tunnel identical in cross section to the tunnels in Contract A-171. The majority of the excavation on Contract A-171 is beneath city streets in a weak siltstone/claystone bedrock with cover varying between 10 m and 25 m (32 ft and 82 ft) to the street surface. Approaching the 7th/Flower Station some fine-grained alluvium is encountered. The tunnels on both contracts are excavated with an open face digger equipped shield. On Contract A-146 the tunnel alignment is a 305 m radius curve of approximately 550 m (1800 L.F.) length underneath several multi-storied buildings of various construction. Excavation is still ongoing on Contract A-146. The contractor's choice for initial tunnel support on both contracts is a system of precast concrete segments similar to what the contractor had used on 7 miles of tunnel in Phoenix, Arizona, for the Arizona Department of Highways.

The Crosstown 7 Collector System, Contract C28G11, is part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District's Waste Pollution Abatement Program. The contract involves the construction of 1.6 km (1 mile) of 3 m (10 ft.) diameter tunnel in soft ground. The tunnel is 10 m (35 Ft.) below surface and passes through a variety of soils. The eastern leg of the tunnel along Bruce Street is mainly in till material, a stiff, relatively dry clay. The northern leg along 16th Street starts in till, and continues in estuarine deposits - moist sticky clay, with intrusions of alluvial sand and gravel. The contract specifications required that the tunnel be constructed either under compressed air or with an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine. The S. A. Healy Co., the general contractor, chose the latter option. Additionally, a single pass, pre-cast concrete segmental liner was selected as the lining system. The mining machine was manufactured by Lovat Tunnel of Canada and the segments were made by the Sehulster Company of Milwaukee. The use of this combination of machine and lining is relatively new to the United States and this tunnel is the most extensive built to date with a gasketed, segmental single pass lining for transportation of fluids. This paper details the various aspects of the construction of the tunnel and associated shafts.

This paper describes the driving of a 1421 m long by 2.74 m diameter sewer tunnel in postglacial soils of the Menomonee River Valley in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. An earth pressure balance machine was used for excavation and to install a "one pass" pre-cast concrete gasketed segmental liner. Also discussed is the use of ground freezing to stabilize the ground for the start of tunneling operations and modifications made to two structures to accommodate final tie-ins for the sewer tunnel.

INTRODUCTION The U.S. Department of Energy's Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is being constructed to provide permanent storage of radioactive TRU waste materials emanating from military weapons production. These wastes are contaminated with radioactive elements heavier than uranium, thus the name trans-(or beyond) uranic (Uranium wastes). The WIPP site, which is located 26 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, was chosen thru a selection process after the National Academy of Sciences recommended salt deposits as a promising host strata for the storage of radioactive wastes. Throughout the United States numerous DOE facilities have produced and stored defense-generated TRU wastes. Once WIPP becomes operational in the fall of 1989, all sites may ship directly to this repository. A companion project has developed special shipping containers (TRUPACT) for safe transport of materials to WIPP. The WIPP facility is currently composed of surface buildings, three shafts, and underground storage and experimental rooms and tunnels. Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. (FKCI) has nearly completed the construction of the fourth shaft, an intake shaft, to provide additional ventilation to the underground workings. PLANNED SHAFT EXCAVATION METHOD Full-face raise boring ( upreaming ) was the allowable method selected by Frontier-Kemper Constructors for the excavation of the shaft. After arrival of an oil-field type rotary drill rig in December 1987, a 9 inch diameter pilot hole was drilled from the surface to the mine level, a depth of approximately 2145 feet.

INTRODUCTION Geotechnical engineers play a major role in tunnel design primarily because tunnels are constructed entirely within the ground. In general, this role can be divided into two major tasks: subsurface investigations and project design. Under subsurface investigations, it is necessary for the geotechnical engineer to accurately describe the ground in which the project will be built. Under project design, it is necessary for the geotechnical engineer to work together with other members of the design team to make certain that the tunnel fulfills its intended purpose at least cost. Given in the paper are the authors' opinions about what constitutes an adequate scope of services for these two tasks on a tunneling project. SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS o Background Study All subsurface exploration programs for tunnels begin with a thorough investigation of background information about the proposed site. Such background information includes geologic, reports topographic maps, aerial photography, and case history reports of other nearby tunnels. Once completed, it is necessary to study the background information so that the proper scope and magnitude of subsurface exploration work is performed in a manner that provides maximum input to a knowledge of those intact and rock mass properties that are important for an understanding of the entire ground mass. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted research on methods to reduce and to measure diesel particulate matter (DPM) aerosols in underground coal mines. One objective of this report is to present findings from an investigation of the DPM reductions obtained by an engine-mounted integrated control system consisting of a dry system (DS) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Another objective is to present results from the usc of a size selective personal sampler to measure DPM concentrations in an underground coal mine. Bureau laboratory tests of the integrated dry system and diesel particulate filter (DS-DPF) have shown that DPM emissions can be reduced up to 97 pet with little change in gaseous emission concentrations. The DS-DPF is undergoing certification tests conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Subsequent to passing all safety requirements, it will be tested in an underground coal mine. A baseline survey of DPM concentrations and aerosol size distributions in a cooperating mine was completed in August 1988. A prototype DPM personal sampler was tested during this survey. Based on results from this test, an improved unit has been developed. This unit is scheduled for extensive field testing by MSHA in 1989.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted experiments on the use of lightweight concrete in the density range of 100 Ib/ft3 for liners in underground mines. Three test sections were completed: a monolithic, portal-type structure with integral walls and arch constructed aboveground; an underground test section constructed in a mine drift using plywood forms; and a second section constructed in a drift using an air-supported formwork. The lightweight concrete in the two underground test sections was placed using piston pumps and a slickline. Fiber reinforcement was added to the concrete in the mine sections without any apparent problems with either pumping or placement of the concrete. In another experiment, the Bureau and Hecla Mining Co., Mullan, rD, used lightweight concrete in the density range of 25 Iblfe to replace timber blocking in a raise preparation structure. Other experiments are described in which low-density, lightweight concrete blocks were produced for mine ventilation doors, stoppings, and barricades. Other mine uses reviewed include pillars and collapsing beams. An advantage of low-density concrete is that it will display up to 50% deformation at a constant yield stress. These hlllovative concepts in deformable concrete lining systems will aid mine operators by decreasing capital and maintenance costs, increasing the available space in underground haulageways, and providing productivity gains and improved resource recovery in the soft, caving, squeezing, or bursting grollnu conditions often found in deep mines.

"Depuis 1906, près de 130 gisements ont été découverts dans la inture archéenne polymétallique (Cu, Zn, Au, Ag) du nord-ouest québécois. Une étude régionale du développement du potentiel inier est présentée puis détaillée pour quatre secteurs: Rouyn-Dranda, Val d'Or-Malartic, Bousquet-Cadillac et Matagami.L' analyse est conduite a l' aide des paramètres suivants: temps, méthodes de découverte, profondeur des gisements et poids métal. Les courbes cumulatives illustrant le nombre de gisements découverts fonction du temps montrent une forme générale en ""S"" dont les i'iations de pentes correspondent aux variations dans les taux de couverte. Initiation, réalisation et stabilisation des cycles de décourté sont ainsi mis en évidence. Deux ""bourns miniers"", de 1922 à 1945 et de 1955 à 1965, rassemblent 72 % des mines identifiées sqú à présent.La plupart des mines sont trouvées en subsurface: 90% ont leur mmet entre 0 et 100 mètres de profondeur dont 70 % entre 0 et 10 êtres. Dans le temps, il y a d' abord récolte par prospection puis par ophysique et enfin, développement progressif du potentiel en proeur avec des méthodes composites. Environ 80% du poids métal extrait de 4 camps miniers, couvrant 8% de Ia surface régionale quelques gros gisements dominent /a production.Ces données permettent de proposer une nouvelle approche pour analyse d' une région minière:La distribution de Ia profondeur des gisements en fonction du temps est indicatrice de la maturité d' un camp minier et peut servir a évaluer son potentiel résiduel.L’analyse des courbes en ""S"" permet d’extrapoler les taux de succès relies aux différentes méthodes et met en relief le rôle crucial de I' innovation dans I' exploration.ABSTRACTSince 1906, some 130 deposits have been discovered in the Archean polymetallic belt of northwestern Quebec. In this paper, the development of the mining potential is analyzed at the regional scale and for the following mining camps: Rouyn-Noranda, Val d'OrMalartic, Bousquet-Cadillac and Matagami.The analysis is based on the following parameters: time, discovery method, depth and weight of metal extracted. Curves showing the cumulative number of deposits discovered as a function of time are ""S"" shaped with slope variations corresponding to changing discovery rates. Initiation, realization and stabilization of discovery cycles are thus well represented. Two ""mining booms"", 1922 to 1945 and 1955 to 1965, account for 72% of the mines identified to date.Most exploitable orebodies have been found near the surface: 90 %have their top between 0 and 100 meters, including 70% between 0 and 10 meters. Early discoveries were made by prospecting, followed by geophysics while the progressive development of the depth potential is being realized by a combination of methods. Approximately 80 %of the metal extracted comes from four mining camps which cover 8% of the area, but most of the production can be allributed to only a few large deposits. Based on these data, a new approach to the analysis of a mining region is proposed:1) The distribution showing deposit depth versus time is indicative of the maturity of a mining camp and can serve to evaluate its remaining potential.2) The ""S"" curve analysis can be used to extrapolate the success rate of a specific exploration method and also stresses the crucial role of innovation in exploration."

"IntroductionHaving mined an economic mineral bearing rock which is of insufficient grade to warrant direct smelting, upgrading or beneficiation is required to make it an economically viable ore. The first step in effecting the concentration process is comminution or sequential breaking of the rock to allow liberation and subsequent recovery of the desired mineral particles. Desirably the ore could be broken down to the point where the valuable mineral is completely liberated to maximize the chance of recovering as much of it and in as pure a form as possible. The number of energy intensive stages of breakage required to attain this goal depends on many physical characteristics of the ore such as hardness, friability, toughness, grain size, existing fracture planes and particle shapes.Commonly the distinct stages are primary, secondary and often tertiary crushing and finally grinding. To increase the efficiency of each stage of size reduction, pre-treatment sizing is common.Crusher feed is commonly scalped of large pieces or screened for reduction crushers and classified for secondary grindingcircuits.Although crushing and screening is employed for many different products, this chapter reviews current practice in larger tonnage metalliferous ore treatment plants.Current practice is to use large gyratory or jaw crushers for primary crushing and some sort of gyrating or cone crushers for additional stages of reduction. For autogenous or semiautogenous grinding circuits only the primary crushing stage is necessary, the balance of the work being performed in the grinding stage. For conventional grinding circuits using ball mills or combinations of rod and ball mills, secondary, tertiary and even quaternary crushing stages are normally required.Older type crushers such as stamp mills, double rolls, sledging mills and hammermills are no longer common but are used for small tonnage special processes.Important to efficient crushing are a variety of sizing devices such as grizzlies and vibrating screens. Products at different stages must be stored to give surge capacity and allow controlled feeding rates through mechanical and gravity feeders. These storage piles, bins and feeders as well as crushers and screens are commonly integrated into a total facility by means of conveyor systems. Most often these are endless rubber belts driven by simple or multiple drive mechanisms usually consisting of electric motors and speed reducers."

Most of the estimates are based on nine months data. These summaries have been prepared in cooperation with State geological surveys or related agencies. The subject of mine fires is a very wide one. To give reasonable coherency, the paper concentrates on the behaviour of fires in the ventilated airways of mines; spontaneous combustions are not considered. The following topics are considered in some detail: 1) Material selection: Performance requirements for mining materials in terms of flammability and smoke/fume production; methods of test and need for relevance to mining conditions. 2) Fire growth: The influence of material properties and method of use on the rate of growth of fire in a mine roadway; the influence of ventilation, slope, material orientation, proximity of walls and roof on fire behaviour. 3) The fire in the ventilation network: The influence of fire on the ventilation distribution; the circulation of fire products in the network. The influences of these topics in determining fire control strategy are then considered but topics such as fire detection and fire extinction methods are not reviewed in detail. An extensive Bibliography on papers relating to mine fires is included.

The combined production value of natural abrasives, which consist of tripoli, special silica stone, garnet, staurolite, and emery, increased in 1987. The increase was, in certain cases, because the materials were used in nonabrasive applications, such as the increased use of tripoli as a filler and special silica stone material as a special-purpose crushed stone. The increased use of garnet as a blasting media accounts for most of its growth. Production and sales of garnet were at a record-high level in 1987. [ ]
