The U.S. Bureau of Mines (BOM) constructed the Hydraulic Transport Research Facility (HTRF) to investigate the hydraulic parameters relating to the transport of coarse coal. To achieve these goals in a timely and efficient manner, the Bureau contracted to Boeing Services International (BSI) the responsibility of operating the HTRF and providing technical support. This data report is a summary of the testing and data results for the period 22 November to 10 December 1982. The testing covered herein is for coarse 2-in by 0 (minus 50 mm) Pittsburgh Seam coal in a 6-in (150 mm) pipeline, at velocities ranging from 5 to 20 ft/s (1.5 to 6.1 m/s) and at concentrations ranging from 15 to 45 pct by weight.

During the late 1940's and early 1950?s, the Westinghouse Combustion Turbine Division built and demonstrated a residual oil-burning locomotive on six eastern railroads. Plans were made to convert to burning pulverized coal, and a single combustor was operated at a full-pressure condition in the laboratory for about two years. During the mid-1960's to mid-1970's, there was considerable interest in coal-burning MHD and a combustor was developed which would also be applicable to combustion turbines. In the early 19801s, the BCR National Laboratory (BCRNL) became affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh, and a program was begun, supported by the Stare of Pennsylvania, to develop an all-purpose combustor for use with industrial and utility boilers and eventually with combustion turbines. In this paper, we review the work of almost 40 years, indicate our present position, and propose steps to be taken leading to efficient and environmentally acceptable power generation from coal, and specifically to coal-burning locomotives.

This Bureau of Mines report presents results from experimental studies on wood crib fires in an intermediate-scale fire tunnel. Gas concentrations, smoke particle characteristics, heat release rates, and ventilation rates were determined. These measurements form a data base for wood, which can be used with previous analyses for coal and future studies of other mine combustibles, to comprehend the potential hazards of these materials in underground mine fires. A knowledge of the combustion products emitted from these materials will benefit fire detection and control. Results show the changes in burning rate and heat release rate produced by different crib configurations and ventilation rates. Also included are the effects that the burning rate has on smoke characteristics and gas production.

The concept of a reusable underground nuclear test facility, named HEDEF, has been under study for some time. This rock chamber would have to be engineered to sustain the repeated mechanical and thermal shocks of internal explosions. In this paper, we summarize preconceptual studies performed in support of HEDEF, including -simple dynamic calculations for internally loaded tunnels, -outline of proof-of-concept tests of proposed reinforcement, - and initial dynamic testing of reinforcement components in an underground high explosive (HE) test.

Open-pit mining is sometimes conducted in areas where the artesian pressures contained in aquifers underlying the pit's floor are great enough to cause floor heave. In order to reduce this pressure several methods are commonly used. One of these methods is a pressure relief well or depressurization wick. The wick consists of a borehole which is filled with gravel and cased at the surface. The wick is allowed to flow freely, thus reducing pressure near its location. The spacing and depth of these wicks can be determined by a simple analytical and graphical technique which considers the weight of material overlying the aquifer and the artesian force within the aquifer. An example of the technique using data from a Colombian coal mine is presented.

INTRODUCTION Volcanic tuffs on and adjacent to the Nevada Test Site (NTS) are being considered by the Department of Energy (DOE) for the possible geo- logic disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. The Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations (NNWSI) project was established in 1977 to evaluate such disposal. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), one of the participants in the NNWSI project, has as one of its responsibilities the development of a rock mechanics program for the Nevada site. SNL conducted three small-diameter heater experiments in welded and nonwelded tuffs in G-Tunnel on the NTS, to investigate the thermal (heat transfer) and hydrothermal (thermal- induced water migration) behavior as part of the rock mechanics program. These two aspects were investigated to increase knowledge about the behavior of tuff so that predictive capabilities are available for use by repository designers, waste-package designers, and performance analysts. Also, knowledge of the behavior of the tuff is invaluable for planning and designing future in situ experiments at Yucca Mountain, the candidate site for the repository. The evaluations of these three experiments is the subject of this paper. Designers, analysts, and experimenters are seeking a better understanding of the behavior of tuffs under the influence of thermal loads expected from radioactive-waste storage, because of two physical features peculiar to tuffs. First, tuffs are inherently porous because of the manner in which they are deposited (Smith, 1960). Tuffs utilized in G-Tunnel testing have porosities ranging from 15 to 46%, which cover the ranges of expected porosities in the target horizon at Yucca Mountain. It has been established that the G-Tunnel tuffs have similar bulk, thermal, and mechanical material properties to those at Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984), thus, G-Tunnel testing can be used to evaluate the effects of porosity on the thermal and mechanical behavior. The second feature is that tuffs above the water table contain pore water that influences the thermal properties of the rock; displacement of the water must be accounted for in repository designs and analyses. For example, G-Tunnel tuffs, located some 600 m above the static water level, have saturations in excess of 60%. Similar percentages are expected at the target horizon in Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984). The presence of and the removal of the pore water affects the thermal behavior of the tuffs, and these three experiments were designed first to determine the phenomenological behavior and then assess influences on predictive capabilities. The focus in this paper is to present the results and evaluations of the experiments as they apply to improving predictive capabilities. The thermal aspects are emphasized by comparing the measured temperatures (in and around heater emplacement holes) with calculations of predicted temperatures using numerical models, so that the effects of significant parameters can be evaluated and integrated into future predictive models. Observation of the hydrothermal aspects is needed to assess the effects of loss of pore water and subsequent migrations on the temperature fields during the heating, and also to define the expected environment in the vicinity of the outer metallic surface around the waste. The metallic boundary can be either the outer shell of the waste package system, which is the main engineered barrier for waste containment, or the borehole liner. A final decision has not been made as yet about the necessity for lining boreholes; thus, the emphasis is on predicting the characteristics of the environment around the outer metallic surface. The Bureau of Mines subjected three commercially available brands of transformer fluid to a series of combustion studies. The experiments were conducted in the intermediate-scale fire tunnel, which was designed to simulate environmental conditions in underground mines. The work was divided into three phases. In phase one, the brands were compared for gas production, smoke characteristics, and combustion yields. In phase two, the production constants of transformer fluids and other fuels were compared for the rate of formation of gas and smoke as a function of fire size. In phase three, several diameters of liquid-pool fires were compared in terms of fire size and burning rate. These transformer fluid measurements will be added to the existing coal and wood data that can be used as a basis of comparison for future studies of other mine combustibles. Further research into the combustion product emissions from combustible materials found in underground mines will lead to improved and realistic fire detection and suppression systems,

This paper reports on the first 2 years in operation of a special-purpose coal handling rig which provides blending, temperature reduction, and continuous, automatic mechanical sampling as part of midstream barge to ship coal transfers. Briefly reviewing some of the characteristics of coal handling peculiar to midstream transfers, the paper discusses how the most beneficial aspects of midstreaming were enhanced through the design of this blending and sampling rig.

The physiocemical properties and industrial uses of the clay mineral montmorillonite are reviewed. Montmorillonite is the most abundant species of the smectite clay mineral group and is the predominant mineral composing bentonite deposits. The crystal structure, chemical composition, exchangeable ion type, and small crystal size are responsible for several unique properties, including a large chemically active surface area, a high cation exchange capacity and interlamellar surfaces having unsual hydration characteristics. The type of exchangeable ion Na, Ca and/or Mg has a major influence on industrial and chemical uses of montmorillonite because of their hydration characteristcs. Natural occurrences of Na montmorillonite in commercial quantities are geographically limited, but Ca-Mg montmorillonite deposits are known world wide. Foundry, well drilling, pelletizing and civil engineering constitute the major uses of montmorillonite, but the total array of uses of montmorillonite exceeds that of any other mineral.

Because of the inherent safety problem associated with the deposition of airborne respirable dust onto the floor and other airway surfaces, the Bureau of Mines investigated the rate of reduction of airborne respirable dust in an airway due to deposition of the particles onto the surfaces of the airway. The effects of relative humidity and air velocity on the deposition rate were examined. It was found that the deposition rate was comparable in magnitude with the Stokes sedimentation rate and that it was independent of relative humidity. However, near the dust source the deposition rate depended significantly upon the air velocity, with such dependence decreasing with increasing distance from the dust source. In addition, the size distribution of the airborne particles was approximately constant along the first 300 ft of the airway, indicating that it was not merely the larger (heavier) particles that were being deposited. These results suggest that deposition, though comparable with the Stokes sedimentation rate in magnitude, does not follow a simple Stokes-type process, and that the process of deposition remains to be explained.

The Bureau of Mines has evaluated the potential availability of silver from 436 mines and deposits in 41 market economy countries (MEC?s) comprising five major economic categories of deposits: predominantly silver deposits and predominantly zinc, lead, copper, and gold deposits. This study evaluated the long-term cost and availability of primary silver production from 53 producing and 13 nonproducing predominantly silver properties in 11 MEC's and estimated the total recoverable silver from 370 properties as a coproduct or byproduct of zinc, lead, copper, or gold production. This study resulted in estimates of a demonstrated resource of 5.99 billion tr oz of recoverable silver as of January 1984. Of this total, 23.5 pet is in the 66 mines and deposits classified as predominantly silver properties. The largest quantity of recoverable silver, 43.9 pct, lies in the 121 properties classified as predominantly zinc, with 26.5 pct in 120 properties classified as predominantly copper, 4.1 pet in 21 predominantly lead properties, and 2.0 pct in 108 predominantly gold properties. At current silver prices, the economics of silver production favor silver that is a byproduct or coproduct of zinc, lead, copper, or gold, and much of the silver production in the United States from the predominantly silver mines is at an economic disadvantage in comparison with silver production in other countries.

They were arranged by the Institute in close co-operation with Mr. Peter Bailey of Gencor, who was course leader. Computers and mathematics APCOM 87, the 20th International Symposium of the Application of Computers and Mathematics in the Mineral Industries, is to be held in Johannesburg from 19th to 23rd October, 1987. Interested people are invited to submit titles and synopses in any of the following topics or others. The objective of the project descibed in this report was to design and field test a model health and safety program at a coal mining company and a gold mining company. The model program was implemented primarily by providing training on loss control, accident investigation, and the operation of mobile equipment; and by providing technical assistance to help solve health and safety problems. Data were obtained from company records on occupational injuries, illnesses, accidents, and "near misses"; and through direct observation of employees performing a large number of randomly selected jobs. At the coal mine, employees were observed five times over a 15-month period. At the gold mine, employees were observed six times over a 16-month period. During the study, the percentage of sampled jobs containing one or more safety deficiencies decreased from 74.3 pct to 36.6 pct at the coal mine and from 86.4 pct to 19.1 pct at the gold mine. Work on this project was performed by Woodward Associates, Inc., under a Bureau of Mines contract.

Design of structures in rock based on ultimate limit states or strength criteria is unrealistic. The fracture process which inevitably occurs in rock around an underground structure is an energy release phenomenon. The development of fractures and associated displacements around a structure may therefore be more logically described using strain energy concepts and design may sensibly be based on serviceability limit states.

Most coals are susceptible to spontaneous heating which in turn creates problem to mining, storage and transportation of coal. It is impossible in actual practice o eliminate spontaneous heating but spontaneous combustion can effecively be controlled through a clear understanding of its mechanism and the factors affecting it. There are altogether six stages in the process of spontaneous combustion. This includes the water adsorption stage and six oxidation stages: chemi-sorption (upto 70°C), decomposition of peroxygens (70°C-150°C), oxy-coal formation (150°C-230°C), combustion initiation (230°C) and active combustion (> 230°C). Heat is produced in all these stages. On the other hand heat is also dissipated so that some equilibrium temperature is reached. If this temperature exceeds a certain critical value (generally about 70°C), coal oxidation may advance to spontaneous combustion. The major factors influencing spontaneous combustion of coal are: coal rank, maceral composition,, water, mineral matter, joints and fissures, seam depth and thickness, mine Layout, method of ventilation, etc. Susceptibility is high for low rank coals and generally decreases with increase in rank. Of the macerals, the exinites are generally most susceptible, the inertinites least and the vitrinites somewhere in between. Water plays a major role on the spontaneous heating of coal, assisting in someways and inhibiting in other. Unrecovered coal in the gob (generally in thick seams) is a major source of fire hazards and this is specially important in shallow mine. Proper design of mine ventilation system can substantially reduce the risk of mine fire. Panel layout and load transfer can affect the development of induced cracks which in turn influence spontaneous heating. Finally, the difference between the spontaneous heating of coal in a seam and that in storage or transportation is mainly due to the change in moistured content, air circulation through the coal and coal fragmentation. These aspects have been analyzed in this paper with a view o reducing the risk of spontaneous combustion.

China was nota factor in the supply of fluorspar to the United States until the early 1980's when it shipped in its first package of Metallurgical lump, that not only was higher grade than the Mexican Metallurgical spar but was also about $30.00 a ton cheaper landed at Burnside. Representatives of the Mexican Fluorspar Institute and several producers made trips to see the Chinese operations supplying their once reserved market place. China, an enigma to most Westerners suddenly became the new contender, with prices that were disgustingly low or so thought the other exporters. Of course China has been mining, producing, consuming and exporting from 400,000 to 500,000 tons per year of various grades of fluorspar but until the first partloads came to the U.S., very little attention was paid to their exports by American-continent producers or consumers.

The purpose of this section is to demonstrate the development of a method that we believe can be used for simulating and predicting mine water inflow. It will also show how important it is for personnel who model mine water inflow to have considerable experience with this subject, and with the conversion of hydrogeologic frameworks to conceptual models. Several of the models described previously are said to be three dimensional. However, closer examination reveals that there is considerable limitation in the variation possible in the third dimension. A true three-dimensional analysis would require a very large program. Therefore, it seems more reasonable to develop a procedure by which information from a two-dimensional model can be used for analysis of a three-dimensional problem. For a vertical mine shaft this is relatively easy because most two-dimensional models have an option for axisymmetric flow. If it can be assumed that axisymmetry exists about the centerline of the shaft it can be modeled easily as has been illustrated previously. For a horizontal drift or tunnel the analysis is not nearly as straightforward. However, the flow can be divided into two parts as indicated in Fig. 59. Part 1 considers the flow into the side of the drift while part 2 considers the flow into the end of the drift. To calculate the flow rate into the entire drift from the unsteady flow into a unit length the instantaneous flow per unit length may be integrated over the total length of the shaft. This procedure is shown in Fig. 60. The radial flow through any incremental length of the shaft is q. The total flow rate, Q, into the drift at any particular time is given by: The discharge q is a function of the time during which a particular segment has been draining that is dependent on the location x. In other words, a location at x = 0 has been draining during the entire time of expansion while a segment at x = L has only started to drain. Therefore, the time of draining at any point, x, is given by: [ ] where t' is the time over which the mine has been expanded. Tunnels in the granitic Climax stock at the Nevada Test Site were inspected for keyblock occurrence. Thirteen relatively large pyramidal keyblocks were located in about 230 m (750 it) of tunnel. Orientations, dimensions, joint roughness coefficients, and joint compressive strengths were measured for the faces of nine keyblocks. The measurements were used to back-analyze keyblock stability to check the validity of a numerical model for keyblock behavior. A newly developed three-dimensional numerical model correctly predicted whether or not each keyblock failed in six of eight cases. The two exceptions involved stress conditions and keyblock locations that clearly violated the assumptions that underlie the stability model. The observations also allowed the effect of tunnel orientation on keyblock occurrence to be evaluated. Of the thirteen observed keyblocks, nine large blocks were found in less than 30 m (100 ft) of the Piledriver drift (which runs N56E) while only four blocks of comparable size were observed in 200 m (656 ft) of the Spent Fuel Test--Climax drifts (N61W). The orientations of the keyblock faces were checked against known discontinuity set orientations; some of the faces correlated well with mean set orientations, whi.le other faces were fringe members of sets. Stereographic techniques were used to examine the frequency of keyblock occurrence and to determine the maximum keyblock size that could be encountered with a given combination of discontinuities. Keyblock occurrence was found to be affected by tunnel orientation in a predictable way; this can be used to guide or improve tunnel design practices.

Treatment of bentonite clay with mineral acids yields a modified clay product of high surface area and acidity which exhibits enhanced adsorptive and catalytic properties. A highly specialized segment of the clay industry based on this process has evolved into worldwide business with a capacity of about one-half million tons/yr. This paper will present data on the chemistry, mining, manufacturing and applications for acid- activated clays.
