Spray drying is the principal drying method used in the production of over six million tons annually of beneficiated kaolin in Georgia. Thirty-three dryers in the Georgia Kaolin belt comprise the highest concentration of large tonnage spray dryers in the world. The steady growth of spray drying in the U.S. kaolin industry is paced by advances in design and development of large spray dryers which have led to large scale new applications in mining and related industries.

The Government of New South Wales has granted approval for Hunter Valley Aluminium Pty., Ltd" and Alcan Australia Ltd. to proceed with the building of an aluminum smelter at Lochinvar and the expansion of a smelter at Kurri Kurri. Construction of the smelters is expected to start as soon as the consortium is finalized in early 1982. The smelters are part of a plan to increase Australia's aluminum capacity fivefold to 1.5 million tons by the mid-1980's. CHILE Construction of a $61 million lithium carbonate plant in northern Chile will be started in early 1983 by Sociedad Chilena del Litio Ltdao Production is scheduled to begin in 1984 with an initial capacity of 6,350 tons of lithium carbonate produced from a brine deposit. The firm is owned 55% by Foote Mineral Company, of Exton, Pennsylvania, and 45% by Corporacion de Fomento de la Produccion-CORFO.

INTRODUCTION Block caving is distinguished from other types of mining in its requirements that the mineral body to be extracted must cave after a relatively large tabular open¬ing is created underneath it, and that the caving must be predictable and controllable for both operating and safety reasons. A mineral body that caves readily may present special problems with respect to ground support in the mining access openings, where stability, rather than failure, is the desired objective. The complete ex¬traction of a caving block, which may measure 50 to 100 m on a side and 100 to 300 m in height, tends to create a large void, resulting in significant changes in the ground stress system and a migration of rock from all directions toward the void; these events begin very early in the life of the mine and lead to additional spe¬cial problems with respect to control of ground move¬ments in the mine working areas, in the rock adjacent to the caving stope, and on the subsiding surface above the mine. Thus, the mechanics of an undercut-cave operation involve a broad range of geotechnical subject matter, including the determination of the lithostatic earth stresses, the structural properties of a large jointed rock mass, the flow properties of the fragments after caving, the stability of tunnel-like openings, and the stability and displacements of the rock structure (1 to 2 km in size) that surrounds the ore body. The objectives are achieved by in-place measurement of rock properties, laboratory tests, theoretical structural analyses of the related prob¬lems, measurements of structural behavior in and above the mine, and comparison of theoretical predictions with actual performance in order to interpret and refine the predictive capability. Undercut-cave mining (Julin, et al., 1973) differs from most other methods in that the caving is an essen¬tial and inherent part of the excavation process and in¬volves the movements of millions of cubic meters of rock over distances of hundreds of meters, as compared to the gradual 2-m settling of the overburden typical of full¬caving longwall coal mining. Undercut-cave mining may involve a rock mass on the scale of a 1-km diam open¬pit mine, but mining is several times deeper than that in the open-pit mine; furthermore, a large portion of the rock mass is in a failed, rather than a stable, state. Ground-control problems are inevitable in a situa¬tion where ground movements are occurring on such a large scale, and where the rock mass is expected con¬veniently to cave at one location but to be stable at an¬other. To devise effective responses to these ground¬control problems, one needs to know first of all what is happening, not merely at the point where the symptoms are observed, but more broadly with respect to the be¬havior of the entire mine rock-mass structure over the total area of extraction, including the effects on the sur¬face as well as those underground. Monitoring structural behavior on this scale would require a sizable group of people, if they attempted to measure all the significant mining-induced changes of ground displacement and pressure, even on a 100-m grid of points. The practical approach is to conduct the mea¬surements activity by a judicious sampling, making in¬termittent, concentrated efforts in selected areas of lim¬ited extent to study problems of immediate importance; simultaneously a minimum level of surveillance is main¬tained over the total structure to delineate long-term be¬havior trends in the major structure, which provide the baseline reference data that are so essential for interpre¬tive purposes. Mine-structure behavior depends not only on the mine extraction configuration and sequence, but on the rock structural properties and how they change from one location to another in the mine. Increasing attention is being given to determinations of rock strength and de¬formation by performing mechanical properties tests in place and in the laboratory, and by drawing inferences from the mapping of geologic structure in mine openings as they are driven and from the logging of cores ob¬tained from exploration drilling that may be performed primarily for delineating ore reserves. Monitoring of mine-structure behavior and inter¬preting it in terms of the growing excavations and the structural properties of the rocks have significant im¬pacts on designing the major undercut-cave operations of undercutting and drawing the ore, supporting the ac¬cess openings, and controlling surface subsidence. The purpose of this chapter is to call attention to the com¬mon ground-control problems encountered in undercut¬cave mining, to relate them to the mining process, and to explain the geomechanical approaches to analyzing these problems with emphasis on methods that are most readily available to the mine staff. UNDERCUTTING, CAVING, AND DRAWING A distinguishing characteristic of an undercut-caving method of extraction is the objective that the rock mass fails of its own weight in a predictable and controllable manner, after it is undercut by excavating a tabular¬shaped void, horizontal or inclined. Induced or forced caving refers to procedures that may be resorted to when the ore will not self-cave over the desired span. Block caving, panel caving, and mass caving are terms used to denote the particular sequence of undercutting and ex¬tracting the total area of the ore body on a single min¬ing level. The discussion herein is not specialized to any of these variations; the word block as used does not imply anything as to sequence. CREATING THE UNDERCUT A common undercutting method is to drive a series of drifts and blast the intervening pillars. Theoretical structural analysis and practical experience show that ground-support problems in the undercutting drifts and in underlying access openings as well (the same princi¬ple applies even if undercutting is done by belling out drawpoints from the slusher drifts) are minimized by retreat-mining across the undercut slot according to a sequence such that the growing undercut area retains a

INTRODUCTION Tunneling machines were introduced into civil con¬struction in the 1800s, but their practical applications were not realized fully until the 1950s. As of 1977, tunneling machines were being used on most tunneling projects of substantial size. As in civil construction, the mining applications of tunneling machines have included long drives such as tunneling for long ore-body develop¬ment drifts, long haulage tunnels, longwall access drifts, and long crosscut developments. Tunneling machines ranging from 1.75-m (5.7-ft) to more than I1.0-m (36-ft) diam are available from several manufacturers; machines for mining applications generally have ranged between 1.75 and 6.0-m (5.7¬and 20.0-ft) diam. Tunneling machines usually operate at or near horizontal grades and are supported by a rail-haulage backup system. However, declines and inclines have been made using alternative backup equip¬ment. Either circular or shaped tunnels may be bored, depending upon the particular equipment used. Using tunneling machines to bore openings through rock offers several advantages over the use of the drilling and blasting technique. These advantages include a rapid advance, continuous operation, uniformity of the opening size, smooth walls, and safe working conditions. Compared to drilling and blasting, boring reduces the disturbance of adjacent rock, thereby reducing the ground-support requirements and the exposure to water inflows. The smooth walls provide natural arching and present minimum resistance to the flow of air. A tunneling machine should be considered a spe¬cialized mining tool that is well-suited to certain mining applications. Properly applied and sustained, a tunnel¬ing machine contributes to realizing substantial econo¬mies in the development of underground mines. All costs herein are expressed in 1977 US dollars, unless otherwise noted. The mention of trade names and manufacturers is not intended to imply an endorse¬ment of any specific equipment. TYPES OF TUNNELING MACHINES As listed in Table 1, five principal types of tunneling machines were being manufactured in 1977. Each type of machine offers a special solution to a specific mining problem. Although each of these types of machines is described herein, most of this chapter is devoted to the full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine that has demon¬strated the greatest production in both civil construction and mining applications. Full-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 1, a full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine consists of a rotating head that is fitted with rock-cutting tools and is forced into the tunnel face. This head is supported by a bearing on a structural support member that, in turn, is held in place by a hydraulically positioned wall-gripping mechanism. Both torque and thrust are reacted from the cutterhead, through the structural support and gripper mechanism, and to the tunnel wall. The rock cuttings fall to the invert at the tunnel face, and they are removed by means of cutterhead buckets or scoops that transfer the cuttings to a conveyor belt. After advancing the cutter¬head through a preset boring stroke, the tunneling machine is advanced by hydraulically pulling the gripper mechanism in from the tunnel walls, stroking forward, and resetting the gripper to the new forward position on the wall; the machine then is set for the next advance stroke. Full-face machines cut only circular openings. Ma¬chines with diameters as small as 1.8 m (6 ft) and as large as 6.1 m (20 ft) have been used in mining applica¬tions, excavating rock with unconfined compressive strengths in excess of 276 000 kPa (40,000 psi). Although special machines have been designed to turn on a radius of 30 m (100 ft) in both horizontal and vertical directions, the conveyors and backup sup¬port equipment generally limit tunneling machines to turns with a radius of more than 60 m (200 ft). The full-face rotary rock-tunneling machines have provided the fastest and most reliable production of any mining method or machine. These machines can be equipped to place any of a variety of ground-support systems, and they can be provided as "open" machines, as shown in Fig. 1, or as "shielded" machines, as shown in Fig. 2. The open machines have the advantage of allowing the ground to be supported as near to the tunnel face as possible. The shielded machines have been designed principally to allow placing precast con¬crete segments. The shielded machines completely pro¬tect the equipment and personnel at the heading, but they are economically limited to permanent long-life haulageways where full lining is required. Partial-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 3, the partial-face rotary tunneling machine is equipped with a cutterhead that rotates slowly at about 0.21 rad/s (2.0 rpm). The single-disk cutterhead produces the tunnel section shown in Fig. 4 by means of an oscillating motion. These machines work on the undercutting principle, and they are avail¬able in spring-line dimensional increments of 0.1 m (0.32 ft) from 1.5 to 2.1 m (5.0 to 7.0 ft); the vertical dimensions are 2.4 to 3.2 m (8.0 to 10.5 ft), respec¬tively. Depending upon the tunnel width, the cutterhead disk may be fitted with from 8 to 16 drag-bit cutters. Penetration is achieved by means of hydraulic rams that force the tungsten-carbide bits into the rock mass. The operation is cyclic, with cutting occurring only on the upstroke. On the downstroke, the rotating cutter¬head draws the fallen muck from the invert into the panzer-type conveyor for rearward transfer. This feature allows time to either reposition ore cars or to exit the tunnel with muck trains while the machine is cutting, as shown in Fig. 5. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Since the beginning of operations, with the exception of a small tonnage mined by slushing, ore extraction has been by full gravity caving. Formerly, a checkerboard sequence of block undercutting was followed with the even-numbered blocks in one panel and the odd¬numbered blocks in the adjacent panel being mined. As these blocks were depleted, the intermediate or pillar blocks were mined (Fig. 1). Following this checker¬board, the mining sequence went through a number of changes, finally evolving into diagonal retreat panel cav¬ing by blocks (Fig. 2). The numbers in Fig. 2 indicate the sequence in which blocks were undercut. Gaps in the numbering sequence indicate undercutting on the level outside the illustrated area. Geology The ore body is a low-grade deposit of chalcopyrite mineralization disseminated throughout structurally weak, highly fractured, strongly altered granitic host rocks. It takes the shape of a gently dipping elliptical cylinder consisting of an ore shell of variable thickness surrounding an interior waste core. Major and minor axes of the mineralized cylinder are 1524 m (5000 ft) and 762 m (2500 ft), respectively, and length approximates 2438 m (8000 ft). Ore is sufficiently fractured to break readily into medium-coarse size. The igneous rock complex containing the ore body is covered by a wedge-shaped blanket of Tertiary con¬glomerate which was brought into place by faulting along the major regional structure of the San Manuel fault. Thickness of the conglomerate cap varies from only 9 m (30 ft) at the east end of the ore body to more than 610 m (2000 ft) at the west. Structurally, the con¬glomerate is much more competent than the igneous host rocks and, when caving, it breaks into massive chunks. Conglomerate boulders seen in drawpoints underground are very coarse. The total rock column over the initial mining area of the 1415 grizzly level was 354 m (1160 ft) of which 122 m (400 ft) was ore, 79 m (260 ft) was leached igneous capping, and 152 m (500 ft) was conglomerate above the San Manuel fault. Diamond Drilling: From 4572 to 7620 m (15,000 to 25,000 ft) are drilled annually from underground workings to delineate the ore body. MINE DEVELOPMENT Haulage Level In the south or main ore body (see Figs. 3-6), with the exception of the draw and transfer raises, all the extraction openings are concreted (Seaney and Tobie, 1965). The haulage panel drifts, which are 18 m (60 ft) below the grizzly drifts, are first driven with pre¬concrete ground support. The drift, which has an arched section, then is concreted using mobile collapsible steel tunnel forms. The haulage drifts leading from the pan¬els to the hoisting shafts are not concreted. After the panel drifts have been concreted, the raise stations from which transfer raises will be driven are constructed and the raise-station ore-drawing chute is installed. The chute is prefabricated of A-36 steel with undercut guillo¬tine gates made of abrasion-resistant 2.5-cm (1-in.) steel plate powered by 20-cm (8-in.) air cylinder installed on each side of the raise station. Transfer Raises The transfer raises are lined with 15 x 20-cm (6 x 8-in.) cribbing and are 1.22 m (4 ft) in the clear. Each cribbing is protected from wear by a high carbon steel angle which is nailed onto the cribbing. The transfer raises are driven from each side of the raise station on an angle of 1.1 rad (63°). Each raise con¬sists of a main and a backover branch. The transfer¬raise driving crew consists of two men working one shift only. Grizzly Drifts After the transfer raise reaches the grizzly level, the grizzly drift can be driven. The grizzly drifts are spaced at 10.6-m (35-ft) centers and are driven parallel to the long axis of the ore body (see Fig. 2). This drift is driven by a two-man crew working on one or more drifts at a time using feed-leg machines. The eight grizzlies in the 42.7-m (140-ft) long drift are spaced at 5.3-m

INTRODUCTION The support of openings in weak sandstones can be achieved by spraying on a liquid grout which will soak in and harden to form a shell. In the St. Peter sandstone of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota compressive strength is increased from about 0.7 MPa (100 psi) to over 7 MPa (1000 psi) to depths of 152 mm (6 in.). A shell of this strength and thickness can pro¬vide support much as shotcrete does but at lower cost. If the spray-grouted shell is inadequate for the support needed, it provides a good base for shotcrete application, which is often difficult in weak or friable sand¬stones because the fresh shotcrete peels off along with a thin layer of sandstone. The spray-grouted technique was initially developed at the Civil and Mineral Engineering Dept. of the University of Minnesota using funds provided by RANN Div. of the National Science Foundation. It was used as temporary support in a 3-m (10-ft) wide, 3700-m (12,000-ft) long storm water drain tunnel by the Minneapolis Sewer Construction Dept. Much of the field development at this construction project was carried out with the cooperation of the personnel of the city of Minneapolis. It also was used for temporary support in a 3.3-m (11-ft) wide, 1800-m (6000-ft) long storm water tunnel built in 1978-1980 for the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation in Minneapolis. In 1975, 2000 m (6500 ft) of 1.5-m (5-ft) wide utility tunnels were spray-grouted for final lining. A 50-m (150-ft) long, 1.2-m (4-ft) wide test tunnel built at the university in 1974 was sprayed for half its length and is being observed for long-term behavior which to date (1981) is good. GROUT MATERIALS The requirements for the liquid grout are more severe than those for injection grouting. Besides being able to penetrate the rock and develop sufficient strength, it must have the following properties: (1) be nontoxic, noncombustible, and have a low odor for spraying under¬ground; (2) have controllable viscosity and setting time for adjusting to the permeability of the sandstone and the required depth of penetration; and (3) must "wet" the sandstone and develop capillary "draw" to penetrate to the required depth. A sodium silicate-based grout with the proper setting agent meets these requirements in the local St. Peter sandstone which has a uniform grain size dis¬tribution curve with D,,, = 0.1 mm, permeability of about 10 to 20 darcys, a porosity of about 25%, and less than 5% of silt size or smaller. It is 97 to 99% pure SiO2. The grout mix consists of Philadelphia Quartz Co. Type N sodium silicate and Celtite 55 Terraset Spray Grade (SG) distributed by Celtite Inc., Cleveland, OH. A volume mix ratio of 100:9:125 for sodium silicate to setting agent to water produces a grout with two to four centipoise viscosity, and initial set at 20°C of 20 min. Setting time is temperature dependent, being longer at lower temperatures, but can be adjusted by varying the setting agent concentration a few percentage points. APPLICATION The application is simple. Spray the grout on the surface until the desired penetration is achieved. Penetration rates of about 5 mm (0.2 in.) per min. are realized in the St. Peter sandstone for up to 152 mm (6 in.) of penetration (30 min. of spraying). The set time must be longer than the spraying time. The spray nozzle should be moved back and forth at a rate that minimizes runoff due to surface buildup. Both a single large hand-propelled nozzle and multiple small machine propelled nozzles have been used successfully. The pumping and mixing equipment used consisted of: (1) a hand-held, hand-pumped, 11-L (3-gal) gar¬den sprayer for test patches (mix by shaking); (2) 76-L (20 gal) batch mixing in barrels with small electric pumps for spraying and mixing; (3) two component pumps consisting of Hypro Model 5300 piston pumps (Hypro Pump Co., St. Paul, MN) on a common shaft driven by an electric motor. The sodium silicate is premixed with a portion of the water and the setting agent is mixed with the rest of the water. The two components are combined and mixed just before the nozzle; and (4) a proportioner metering the setting agent just before the nozzle with the water and sodium silicate premixed and pumped from the surface. The proportioner permits the bulk of the grout to be pumped through a single pipe or hose with only the setting agent stored underground. This is efficient and low in cost. COST The grout mix costs about $0.20/L ($0.75 per gal) in 1978 dollars. Filling all the voids 100 mm (4 in.) deep (25% initial porosity) would have a materials cost of about $5.40/m2 ($0.50 per sq ft). The labor cost of application is usually less than the material cost for normal tunnel jobs. A pump and proportioner cost less than $1000. Sodium silicate storage tanks and pip¬ing costs would depend on the particular site conditions. REFERENCES AND BIBLIOGRAPHY Nelson, C. GEOLOGY One of the largest copper resources in North America occurs in the Bingham mining district, located 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Salt Lake City, UT. Anaconda's present contribution to the development of this resource is the Carr Fork mine. (Fig. 1, Bingham district plan map.) The Carr Fork story began about 300 million years ago when a thick sequence of sedimentary quartzite and limestone was deposited in the Oquirrh Basin. Subsequent earth stresses formed a series of west-northwest-trending overturned anticlines and synclines that were later offset by northwest-striking thrust faults and northeast-trending normal faults. (Fig. 2, Bingham district cross section.) About 38 million years ago the Bingham stock was intruded into some of the folds, resulting in the formation of porphyry ore in the intrusive, and fissure, replacement, and skarn ore deposits in the sediments. The Carr Fork skarns were formed preferentially in two limestone units, called the Yampa and Highland Boy, which average about 46 m (150 ft) in thickness, separated by about 76 m (250 ft) of quartzite. Copper mineralization consists almost entirely of chalcopyrite associated with pyrite and molybdenite in a gangue of garnet, diopside, magnetite, quartz, and carbonate. Molybdenum, gold, and silver are economic byproducts. (Figs. 3 and 4, indicated ore in plan and section.) EXPLORATION HISTORY The West Mountain mining district, of which Carr Fork is a part, was organized in 1863, after leaf-silver ore was discovered in the Carr Fork of Bingham Canyon. However, it was not until 1873, when the Bingham and Camp Floyd railroad to the town of Bingham was completed, that the mining camp flourished. Many small mining companies in the district were reduced, often through consolidation. By 1937 only the National Tunnel and Mines Co. was active in the Carr Fork area. In 1948 it declared bankruptcy, and was later purchased by The Anaconda Co. Anaconda conducted geologic investigations in the Bingham district until 1968, when a concerted diamond drilling program was initiated to fully evaluate the geologic potential of the Carr Fork area. The exploration program commenced with one diamond drill, but was enlarged to three drills following discovery of the first major ore intercept. Near completion of the exploration effort, large oil well rotary drills were used to drill to depths of 762 to 914 m (2500 to 3000 ft), after which the holes were completed by standard diamond drilling techniques. All holes were collared vertically, but considerable deviation occurred because of structure and rock conditions. "The coal deposits from Cape Perce on Cape Breton Island have been known to supply the coal requirements of the people living in or visiting the area for close to 300 years.A major block of coal has been identified off Cape Perce, which has several seams from which coal can be taken. The initial development by the Cape Breton Development Corporation will be in the Harbour Seam and constitutes the Donkin-Morien Development Project.The CBDC's confidence in this indicated resource is based on its knowledge of the Sydney Coal Field and from boreholes driven into the block during the summers of1977, 78 and 79. In 1980, further geological data were gathered from surface drilling and an intermediate-depth high-resolution seismic survey. The surface facilities for the Donkin-Morien Development Project will be located on the northern half of the cape, with access declines extending 3.9 km in a north-northeasterly direction to the Donkin block of coal reserves. The development has the potential of supplying all the coal needed f or the future electrical power generation requirements of Nova Scotia for many years to come.The planned mine, for which a project definition study has recently been completed, will have a production rate in excess of 3 million tonnes per year.IntroductionAt the Second CIM District 1 Meeting held in Halifax in October 1980, a background paper on Phase II of the Donkin-Morien Development Project was presented. The project involves a 3.2-million-tonne, saleable, underground coal mine. At that time, the chronological sequence of events had unfolded, starting with the initial boreholes through to the feasibility study, and on through site clearing and site preparation. This led to engineering design contracts for the portals and the two tunnels to be driven to intersect with the Harbour Seam close to 4 km from their entry point."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of manganese from known domestic occurrences. Eight of these deposits were found to have demonstrated resources totaling 420 million metric tons with an average grade of 10 percent contained manganese. They were found to be submarginally subeconomic. Economic evaluations of the eight deposits resulted in incentive prices ranging from $8 to almost $35 per long ton unit (22.4 pounds) of contained manganese. Comparing these prices with the current market value of $1.70 per long ton unit of manganese clearly illustrates the submarginal nature of the domestic ores analyzed. These domestic resources would probably not be developed except in the case of an extreme national emergency. Production from the eight deposits would take 3 to 6 years to develop, and the final product would be manganese ore concentrate, which could be used in the production of ferromanganese. If preproduction development began in 1981, annual production would peak in 1987 with 900,000 metric tons of recoverable manganese. Thereafter, production would see a steady decline unless additional resources were located or technologic improvements were made to allow processing of lower grade material, or unless mining and processing of ocean manganese nodules began to take place.

In Louisiana salt mines a sudden erruption or outburst of salt and gas occurs when the heading face approaches a pressure pocket (altered salt with high pressure gas). The resulting cavity is semi-ellipsoidal, reaching lengths of 50m or more. Potential risks from the outbursts include loss of life and equipment. A gas outburst is initiated by "disking" of the salt in biaxial compression and propagates by spalling of the cavity walls and further disking. "In recent years, the major effort in detonator development has been concentrated on ""non-electric"" systems. Existing types all involve some form of explosive reaction to transfer ignition energy from outside the borehole to the pyrotechnic delay element contained within the detonator. These may be based on low-energy detonating cords having grained or plasticized explosive cores, shock tube energy transmission principals and explosive gas ignition systems. Each has properties of internal and external effects not present in electric conductors.The MAGNADET System introduces transformer coupling into electric blasting circuits. Safety features with respect to current leakage, stray currents of AC or DC source, electrostatic energy and radio-frequency radiation are comparable to ""non-electric"" systems, with advantages in simplicity, speed of hook-up and range of application.The transformer device used is a small ferrite ring or toroid which is an integral part of each specialized detonator. The detonator legwires form the secondary side of the transformer winding. The primary side is a single wire loop common to all units within the circuit. Power is supplied from a frequency-tuned portable exploder with unique circuit-sensing features.The MAGNADET System is expected to have particular application to shaft sinking, raising and tunnelling where the protective features as well as speed and efficiency are critical factors. Applications of the 'MAGNA' booster in quarries, open pits and longhole deck charges offer control over vibration problems and elimination of surface noise.IntroductionFor many years, electric detonators and electric blasting systems dominated surface and underground applications where controlled delay times were required. The topic of the industrial applications of mineralogy is a vast field which can be adequately covered only in a large book or by a two or three semester course. This paper recalls experiences of the writer in this field, a task requested by the Process Mineralogy Committee. Therefore, this paper is largely an account of the industrial mineralogy problems I was involved with, since my student years, Although I will treat each application only briefly, it is hoped that they will illustrate to the students in the field how varied are the applications of mineralogical methods. In this respect, I want to emphasize that it is important for mineralogy teachers to point out the usefulness of mineralogical methods much more often in their courses. Not only does that help prepare young individuals for industrial careers, but also it arouses their feeling of consciousness of public responsibility which is an important attribute for the world's scientists. When professors utilize the varied applications in their teaching of mineralogical methods students then understand better the significance of learning those methods and appreciate the many years of necessary university preparation. The first time I was involved in an application of mineralogical methods was about 1944 as a student of Professor Paul Niggli. He was asked to study the problems of ice crystallization on wings of airplanes. The ice formed at high altitudes and during the winter. This was not outside his realm of expertise because he was the main initiator of the Snow Research Institute on the Weissfluhjoch in Switzerland. I believe that the work of this Institute was an important factor in stimulating much of the snow research subsequently carried out at the United States Army Snow Research Center, which was located at that time in Willmette near Chicago. Dr. Bader, one of Paul Niggli's former students, was the Director of Research at Wilmette at that time and for quite a number of years thereafter. A mineralogist-crystallographer can make important contributions to a better understanding of the problems of snow and ice formation, avalanche hazards, and the prevention of hail. Georgius Agricola in 1556 wrote De Re Metallica, one of the first and probably the most famous of mining reference works. In Book 1 he reflects rather elegantly on mining and miners. "Many persons hold the opinion that the metal industries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requiring not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. For a miner must have the greatest skill in his work, that he may know first of all what mountain or hill, what valley or plain, can be prospected most profitably, or what he should leave alone; moreover, he must understand the veins, stringers, and seams in the rocks. Then he must be thoroughly familiar with the many and varied species of earths, juices, gems, stones, marbles, rocks, metals, and compounds. He must also have a complete knowledge of the method of making all underground works. Lastly, there are the various systems of assaying substances and of preparing them for smelting; and here again there are many altogether diverse methods. ... "Furthermore, there are many arts and sciences of which a miner should not be ignorant. First there is Philosophy, that he may discern the origin, cause, and nature of subterranean things; for then he will be able to dig out the veins easily and advantageously, and to obtain more abundant results from his mining. Secondly, there is Medicine, that he may be able to look after his diggers and other workmen, that they do not meet with those diseases to which they are more liable than work- men in other occupations, or if they do meet with them, that he himself may be able to heal them or may see that the doctors do so. Thirdly follows Astronomy, that he may know the divisions of the heavens and from them judge the direction of the veins. Fourthly, there is the science of Surveying that he may be able to estimate how deep a shaft should be sunk to reach the tunnel which is being driven to it, and to determine the limits and boundaries in these workings, especially in depth. Fifthly, his knowledge of Arithmetical Science should be such that he may calculate the cost to be incurred in the machinery and the working of the mine. The great majority of shafts constructed today are still excavated by drilling and blasting, a method which changed very little in over 100 years until the introduction of the mechanical lashing unit and cactus grab by the South Africans, which enabled muck to be removed as fast as massive hoisting systems could handle it and resulted in very rapid rates of sinking. Record breaking month's performances were achieved at -Hartebeestfontein No. 4 shaft, October 1960-337.1 m; Western Reefs No. 4 shaft, October 1961-340.7 m; and Buffelsfontein eastern twin shaft, March 1962-381.2m. The method was very labor-intensive, requiring a crew of over 60 workers at the shaft bottom during the drill cycle. Safety precautions were strict, but in the drive to achieve rapid advance, cases of personal injury were still somewhat high because of the large number of people engaged in this potentially hostile environment. The South African method, as it came to be referred to throughout the rest of the world, was adopted in the United Kingdom in the late 1950s in a modified form with greatly reduced manpower and nonsimultaneous sinking and lining, which was insisted on by the British Mines Inspectorate. In that instance, it was successfully used to sink the 7.3-m-diam concrete-lined shafts at Kellingley to 770 m depth, with rates of advance of over 90 m/month achieved, a British record at that time. During the sinking of the 1.15-km-deep twin shafts at Boulby potash mine in the UK in 1970, the method was again used, but for the first time ever in Britain exemptions from the mining code permitted the use of crash beams, crash doors, jack catches, and semi-simultaneous sinking and lining techniques. New British shaft sinking records of over 120 m/month were achieved in both shafts. Similar equipment and techniques were used in the early 1970s to sink several deep shafts in Canada, notably Creighton #7 and the Con zinc mine at Yellowknife in the NW Territories. Today, this equipment is standard for deep shafts in the US and the rest of the world. However, with the tremendous escalation in mining labor costs, the impact of health and safety legislation, and environmental regulations, coupled with a very real shortage of miners willing to work in this exposed situation it was apparent that an alternative to the labor-intensive conventional method of shaft construction had to be found. Recognizing the trend is inevitable, one or two major German shaft sinking contracting firms began to take a fresh look at full face boring techniques applied to tunnels and raise bored shafts. The results were most encouraging. Tunnel drivage techniques using moles had developed considerably from Colonel Beaumont's original channel tunnel machine circa 1880 to the superbly engineered Priestley machine selected to cut the British side in 1975 and the double shielded Robbins Grandori borer on the French side of the English Channel. Full face tunnel machines were being successfully used to drive uphill in inclined shafts in Austria and Switzerland. At Mapprag in Switzerland, the Demag mole drove the first (intentional) vertical transition and curve, and then went on to successfully complete the 730-m-long penstock shaft at an inclination of 35°. In Austria, the Wirth mole drove the Kaprun Glacier ski-lift railcar tunnel at record breaking rates of 457 m/MONTH (best 30 m/d) through green schist at an inclination of 29° for a distance of 3.35 km while the Hydro tunnel at Sarrelli in Switzerland was being driven by the Robbin's mole at an inclination of 35°. Simultaneously, extremely promising results were obtained using large assemblies of cutter discs on raise borer heads, such as the 4.87-m-diam X 460-m-deep shaft raised by Teton for Jim Walter Resources Inc. Bearing in mind that most mine shafts in the future (unless in exceptionally competent rock) will require some form of lining, and the trend will be toward deeper shafts as the more easily accessible mineral deposits become exhausted, it was seen that normal raise boring had definite limitations in vertical accuracy, in the limitation imposed by the drill string on the available torque that could be applied to the cutter head, and in the risk of collapse of the unsupported shaft rock wall in friable or jointed and fissured ground, since it is not possible to apply any form of temporary support until the permanent lining is being installed. A further problem was the economics of installing a subsequent lining, necessitating setting up a headgear and hoisting arrangement approaching in size that required for conventional drill and blast sinking and lining. Because of the economics, German contractors opted for a phased transition from drill and blast to the full face, rodless, out of the solid shaft mole, by starting off with a down-the-hole shaft boring machine -without a drillstring-but using a pilot hole to get rid of the muck.

From its mining lease at the northern end of Cohens Reef at Walhalla in the North Gipps- land mountains, the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mining Company produced 13,695kg of gold, which at 1982 prices represents a value of about $140 million. In the period 1885 to 1908 the mine was one of Australia's principal reef gold producers, being top Victorian producer in six of these twenty-four years. Prior and subse- quent occupants of the lease produced an addit- ional 160kg of gold. The Extended and the other mines on Cohens Reef whilst contributing importantly to the financial resource of Victoria, were the sole important support for the substantial town of Walhalla that had grown up around them. When the mines closed, Walhalla gradually reduced from a bustling developed town to the present attractive mountain village so favoured by tourists.

The Minerals Availability System (MAS) was formally established by the Bureau of Mines in May 1975 to provide current appraisals of the engineering and economic availability of nonfuel minerals for consideration in the formulation of both domestic and foreign minerals policy, Domes- tic mineral property reports are developed by the Bureau's four Field Operations Centers, and foreign data are obtained under contract. This site-specific information is subsequently subjected to engineering verification and economic evaluation, and the results are analyzed and published as Minerals Availability System Appraisals. The deposit-specific data are also entered into the computerized MAS data base, where a subset of this information, the Mineral Industry Location System (MILS), is available to the public in the form of computer graphics and listings. Other MAS products are also described. The Bureau's MAS personnel are frequently involved in special engineering and mineral economic projects for other Federal and State agencies. MAS personnel also work closely with the private sector, both in the area of mining and processing cost estimation, and as a source of nonproprietary mineral deposit information.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION At the Star mine, Hecla Mining Co., located in Burke, Shoshone County, ID, the mining method is horizontal slicing (timbered or untimbered) cut-and-fill using hydraulic sand backfill. Back stoping as well as breast stoping is used; see Fig. 1. The annual produc¬tion from all cut-and-fill mining is 259 816 t (286,400 st). The average depth ranges from 366 to 2408 m (1200 to 7900 ft). A majority of the tonnage comes from an average depth of 2240 m (7350 ft). Average travel time to the stope is 1 hr. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size and Ground Conditions The ore body is 610 to 1219 m (2000 to 4000 ft) along the strike and 2408 m (7900 ft) on the dip, with an average vein width of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). The dip is essentially vertical. The ore body is heavily sheared and broken on the main fault structures; it is more competent on the wall veins but everywhere subject to rock bursting at depth. The hanging and footwalls are strongly fractured on the main fault structures, again more competent but still fractured on the wall veins. All host rock is Revett quartzite. Value and Production Requirements The ore value is $56 per ton. Production require¬ments are 1089 t/ d (1200 stpd), five days per week. Why Cut-and-Fill? The slusher extraction method is the most satisfac¬tory and practical for narrow vertical veins with sheared walls. The method must be quite selective to be com¬mercial. The veins are too narrow for rubber-tired ex¬traction and the grade is not high enough to make resuing practical. DETAILED DESCRIPTION Development Access to the main shaft is by the 3.2-km (2-mile) main haulage tunnel. The level intervals in the vertical timbered shafts are 61 m (200 ft). Vein development is by crosscut and laterals located 30.5 m (100 ft) into the vein wall. Vein crosscuts are on ±61 m (200 ft) centers. Access to the vein is by raises carried up with the stope. The raises are equipped with four wood¬cribbed chutes (two orepasses reinforced with angle irons, one manway, and one timber slide, Figs. 2-6). The initial cut is located 6.7 m (22 ft) above the main level (Fig. 1). Stoping Cycle Detail Sampling: Grab samples are taken from the mine cars. Channel sampling of the faces and backs is done when necessary. Drilling: For stope drilling, Ingersoll-Rand 300M percussion drills are used, with Ingersoll-Rand 300M and Gardner-Denver RB83M stopers, used for back stoping. Breasting down is done with Gardner-Denver S83FM jacklegs. The back stoping rounds are 0.9 to 1.8 m (3 to 6 ft) and the breast stoping rounds 1.5 to 3m (5 to 10 ft). Blasting: For stope blasting DuPont Tovex 100 watergel with fuses and igniter cord is used primarily. Approximately 60% of the blasting is done with am¬monium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO). For development headings and shaft sinking, DuPont Drivex watergel with Ensign Bickford Nonel Primadet primers is is used. Mucking: Broken ore is removed entirely by slusher in the stopes. These are mostly 3.7-7.5-kW (5-10-hp) Ingersoll-Rand air-powered or 7.5-37.3-kW (10-50-hp) Ingersoll-Rand electric-powered. In the horizontal de¬velopment headings Eimco 12B and 21 and Atlas Copco LM-56 overshot mucking machines and a 0.76 (1 cu yd) hydroelectric Wagner HST-1 LHD (load-haul-dump) unit are used. Rockway for Extraction: The cribbed chutes (Fig. 7) are nearly vertical and hexagonal in shape and are made of spaced 152 x 203-mm (6 x 8-in.) timber, reinforced with varying weights and sizes of angle iron, depending on wear requirements. Rectangular cribbed chutes are used where ground pressure is not a problem. Cribbing is added in 2.4 or 3-m (8 or 10-ft) extensions accord¬ing to the floor height (whether timbered or untimbered). See Figs. 8 and 9. Backfilling: Backfilling is done with hydraulic sand consisting of classified mill tailings at 65% solids. The fill contains approximately 20% 325-mesh fines. The tailings are pumped 3353 m (11,000 ft) at 50-55% solids 22.7 dry t/h (25 dry stph) with a duplex piston pump. Cycloning increases the tailings density to 65% solids. INTRODUCTION The committee on Rock Mechanics, Japanese Society for Civil Engineers, has been discussing 'soft rock engineering in Japan' and presented several papers concerning dam, tunnel, bridge and slope constructions to International Symposium on Weak Rock, Tokyo 1981. This is the summarized paper based on References of Okamoto et a1 (1981), Iida et a1 (1981), Working Group on Tunneling-JSCE (1981), Working Group on Bridge Foundations-JSCE (1951) and Kikuchi et a1 (1981), which can convey general view on engineering experiences with weak rocks in Japan. From the point of view to the origin and/or distinctive physical properties, weak rocks in Japan may be classified into (1) sedimentary, (2) weathered, (3) low welded-pyroclastic and (4) fractured ones. Their typical characteristics are summarized in the following section. Concerning dam foundations on soft rock, several hundreds have already been constructed and, at present, nearly one hundred are under construction or at planning stage. These dams, almost without exception, have some problems such as site selection, material selection for fill-type and concrete dams, design of dam and its foundation, and construction procedures, requiring special ingeneous and cautious measures to cope with the local geotechnical difficult situations. In tunneling, for the decade of 1970s, the number of tunnels in soft rock either completed or under construction was at least 160, including Seikan Tunnel of 53.9 km long, Nakayama Tunnel of 14.8 km long and so on. Under sponsorship of the USBM and later of the DOE, a new type of rotary rock drill has been developed by The Bendix Corporation. Originally developed for the production of holes for the installation of longer than seam height roof bolts, the flexible drill is a useful tool for many drilling applications. This drill allows hands-off or remote production of holes for increased drilling speed and greater operator safety in any strata suitable for rotary drilling. The paper discusses various applications and experience for the flexible drill system in coal mining, metal/nonmetal mining, and for general civil engineering uses. Manual, remote control, and automatic roof bolter modules are also discussed.
