FOREWORD In 1974, the Ministry of Housing and Reconstruction (The Client) which subsequently became the Ministry of Development and New Communities of the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt assigned responsibility to the Arab Contractors (Osman Ahmed Osman and Company) for the design and construction of the tunnels under the Suez Canal. For this project the Arab Contractors of Cairo and Tarmac International of London formed a joint Venture, called Osmac. Sir William Halcrow and Partners of London are responsible for the design of the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel as a Sub-Contractor to the Contractor. The advisory consultant of the client is a joint Venture between Tippetts-Abbett-McCarthy-Stratton (TAMS) of New York and Arab Consulting Engineers (ACE) of Cairo. INTRODUCTION A site investigation was carried out between Km 141 and Km 150 Suez Canal chainage to determine the ground conditions relevant to design and construction of a road tunnel under the Suez Canal. A feasibility study included aerial surveying, geological mapping and the drilling of 8 boreholes. Detailed investigation included the drilling of 105 boreholes, sampling, piezometer installation, pumping tests, and the digging of trial pits and trial excavations. In-situ work comprised SPT, permeability tests and dilatometer tests. Laboratory testing included soil classification tests, compaction tests, California Bearing Ratio tests, shear strength determination and oedometer consolidation tests as well as chemical analysis of both soil and ground water. The investigation revealed that the ground conditions at the first proposed El Shatt site (Km 148.5) were not favourable for bored tunnelling, whereas they were more favourable at the southern El Shatt site (Km 150.0).

INTRODUCTION For more than a century, artificial ground freezing has been used for groundwater control and structural support for excavations. Most of the early uses of the freezing method were for sinking deep access shafts for mines and tunnels (1,2,3,4). More recently, ground freezing has increasingly been used for construction of large diameter cofferdams and soft-ground and mixed-face tunnels (5). Although ground freezing has been used in the past-for tunnels, it was invariably used as a last resort measure, where more conventional measures could not be used. The more recent freezing applications, however, have become increasingly cost competitive with more conventional techniques, and are now being included as part of the design concept (6,7,8,9,10,11,12). The purpose of this paper is to describe some of the more recent applications of ground freezing for tunnel construction. The paper begins with a brief description of the most commonly used freezing system, the Poetsch process. Recent tunneling projects utilizing ground freezing for structural support are then discussed. DESCRIPTION OF THE FREEZING METHOD The most commonly used freezing method is the Poetsch process, which was originally developed by F. H. Poetsch in the late 1800's. INTRODUCTION This paper summarizes the result of a two and a half year research program. The objective of the research was to develop a fundamental understanding of the Rib-in-Roc method. Through the development of a new model technology, namely three-dimensional physical models which powerfully exploit the results of dimensional analysis Stillborg, Stephansson and Swan (1), it has been possible to establish the contribution to both permanent and immediate stabilization of a large underground opening pre-reinforced by the Rib-in-Roc method. Using the results from these physical models and earlier work by Stillborg and Stephansson (2) and Åkesson (3), a conceptual synthesis is given in this paper so demonstrating the Rib-in-Roc method to be a practical working system of pre-reinforcement. DESCRIPTION OF THE RIB-IN-ROC METHOD To give the reader an idea of how this method of pre-reinforcement is performed, a short description will be given, Figure 1. Before any full-scale excavation takes place an entry is made in the host rock and rib raises are driven around the proposed opening. These raises are made at a spacing that is dependent upon rock quality; an opening in poor rock needs more ribs per length of opening. As the ribs are driven they are used as a site from which very competent rock bolting can be done. As a rib is excavated it is filled with reinforced concrete. Finally after having in this way reinforced the zone around the proposed opening, (a reinforced arch is formed) the displacements are automatically controlled as the opening is being excavated. Using this method openings with a span of 50-60 meters (160-200 ft) and a height of 60-80 meters (200-260 ft) are likely to be realised.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of the report on which this paper is based is (1) to evaluate the potential for cost reduction of urban mass transit tunnels by use of alternative materials transport systems during the tunneling process, and (2) to identify research and development program elements to assure that the materials transport system will not become the limiting factor for the rate of excavation. The approach taken was: Review the state of the art of urban tunneling by extensive interviews with representatives of tunnel contractors, equipment manufacturers, government agencies and consultants, and by review of recent literature.

INTRODUCTION Friction Rock Stabilizers, commonly called Split Sets,tm* have been under development since early 1973. Five years of intensive laboratory and field testing led to their introduction to the metal mines in the United States in the fall of 1976. Actual sales started in February of 1977 and, to date, over five million units have been marketed to metal mines. The present rate of useage is near 3 1/2 million units per year which is approximately 50 per cent of all roof fixtures used in the United States metal mining industry. Mr. Richard Hoppe, Senior Editor of Engineering & Mining Journal, in an article of the February, 1979, issue, entitled "Winning the Battle Against Bad Ground", said, "In hardrock mining operations in the western U.S., particularly underground uranium mines where exceedingly difficult ground is common, no roof support system has been accepted more quickly than the Split Set friction bolt invented by Dr. James J. Scott and developed by Ingersoll-Rand Co." This paper describes how Friction Rock Stabilizers function and presents technical data to show the uniqueness of the Friction Stabilizer system. This report documents the work performed and the results obtained in a 2-year development of a Mobile Inert Gas Generator for use in the Bureau of Mines Remote Sealing System for fighting underground coal mine fires. The performance requirements of an inert gas generating system for the Remote Sealing System were clearly established. A thorough review of seven possible system designs meeting these requirements was conducted. An air cooled, distillate oil fired combustion type inert gas generator was selected for further detailed design, hardware fabrication, and performance testing. The Inert Gas Generator constructed under this program has been thoroughly performance tested and has been operated in the field for approximately 200 hours. The system has met or exceeded all important performance requirements. The system was used in the fire fighting efforts at the Bethlehem Mines Corporation Cambria Division Mine 33 fire and contributed to the successful containment of the fire. The system was also employed in the demonstration of entire Remote Mine Sealing System at the Jenney Mine in the fall of 1978. The system is currently avail-able for fighting any future underground coal mine fires.

MARTA, The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, is building a 53 mile heavy rail transit system to serve the City of Atlanta. Phase A of the Rail System, consisting of approximately 14 miles of at-grade, aerial and subway construction is underway. Metropolitan Atlanta lies in the Piedmont Geologic province of Georgia and is underlain by rocks of essentially granitic and gneissic nature. The soils encountered are primarily silty sands which are in-place weathering products of the parent rock and exhibit their relic structure. In general, these materials have presented no unique construction problems other than those created-by proximity of manmade structures, local availability of ground water, and top of rock elevation. The subway sections of primary interest in this paper consist of hardrock and soft ground tunnels and extensive cut-and-cover sections. The cut-and-cover construction includes excavations as deep as 80 feet. Temporary support systems in these deep excavations consist of soldier pile-timber-lagging or soldier pile-tremie concrete (SPTC) walls with internal bracing or tiebacks. In shallow cut-and-cover sections, where right-of-way economics permitted, slopes were laid back partially or fully to reduce or eliminate the need for bracing systems. INTRODUCTION Design and development of new products generally proceeds through a phase of initial development and discovery based on the evolution of existing arts, followed by technical innovation and development based on both pure and applied research. The development of the mechanical tunnel boring machine (TBM) has followed a similar pattern, with the first machines closely resembling continuous coal miners. In general, however, the design of TBM's to date has been more a result of evolution and discovery than of new technical innovation, even though large sums of money have been spent on research and development. In particular, the results of experimental laboratory and field investigations have had little effect on tunnel boring machine design, and the better performance of TBM's today over those of 10 or 15 years ago, is due more to increased mechanical reliability and greater operating experience, than to improvements in penetration rates and rock fracture capability. The improvements made, have been mainly by the machine and cutter manufacturers who recognize the greater efficiency and economic advantage of utilizing large single row cutters with high load capacity along with large edge spacing. Are there any improvements to be made, therefore, in TBM performance without new and dramatic technological breakthroughs? Can TBM manufacturers design greater performance into their machines by a logical extension of the present art, and by applying what has been learned in the laboratory and field? Some, for example, believe that the kerf cutting system of boring rock is at, or close to, its opti¬mum and little improvement can be made in the present TBM concept.

INTRODUCTION For the construction of several kinds of structures which pass through under railways, we have recently developed an effective and new tunnel construction method, aiming at more secure train operation during the construction as well as the rationalization in the construction works for such structures. Most important in carrying out the construction works for the structures under railways is how to maintain the safe operation of trains. For such construction works, temporary supporting structures and supplemental works have been often applied, for which high cost and long period for the construction have been required. While, this new tunnel construction method has the feature that it is capable of constructing definitive structures for various purposes, which, at the same time, acts as the temporary supporting members for protection of railways. Therefore, this method is now drawing much attention in that higher safety of train operation, low construction cost, and shorter construction period are accomplished, minimizing the period required for slackening the train speed during the construction works.

The paper gives a short resumé of the findings of the joint US - Swedish "Mechanical Boring (MB) or Drill and Blast Tunneling (DB) ? Workshop" in Stockholm December 1976. New developments and trends in both MB and DB techniques in Europe since 1976 are described, and information is given on some interesting new projects. Differences in contracting principles between the US and Europe lead to different practices for preinvestigations, design, excavation and arbitration and legal affairs. It is shown that this often leads to a higher cost in the US than in Europe for similar excavation jobs. A typical US tunnel job also has more men on the site than a similar job in Europe. This adds to the cost difference and is only partly balanced by a slightly higher rate of excavation in the US. A comparison is made between two quantitative methods of predicting MB penetration rates. These are in reasonable agreement. A probable future development in machine design is an increase in cutter load towards perhaps 25 tons per disc where the tunnel diameter is large enough to house the machine size dictated by the size of the very large electric motors required. Recent European developments in drill and blast technique include improved methods for cautious blasting, precision hydraulic drilling of small diameter holes, and non-electric interval blasting techniques. These developments still keep the drill and blast method ahead of mechanical boring costwise for tunnels in igneous rock whereas for most sedimentary materials mechanical boring has a lead, particularly for long tunnels.

INTRODUCTION The state-of-the art in the area of soil-structure interaction is not sufficiently developed that one can accurately predict the earth load distribution on buried structures. This lack of knowledge has led to the use of high factors of safety in their design and conservative assumptions for the loading diagrams. As a step towards the improvement of the design methodology for buried structures, it is important to be able to apply new analytical techniques and monitor the performance data obtained on full-size buried structures. The performance data should preferably include: 1) the actual stress distribution on the buried structure, 2) stress distribution in the buried structure and surrounding soil media, 3) vertical and lateral movements in the soil adjacent to the buried structure, and 4) deflection of the buried structure. Brown (1967), Davis (1972), Krizek, et al (1974), Krizek and MacQuade (1978), and some few others have compared the performance of full-size culverts with finite element results. Despite all these efforts, a complete understanding of the soil-structure interaction problem has not yet been fully achieved. In an effort to make improvements in the existing design procedures for buried structures constructed in an open-cut, the Department of Environmental Services (DES), Washington, D.C., in conjunction with Howard University, undertook a detailed study of Section II of the Capitol Hill Relief Sewer (CHRS). Inclinometers were used to measure lateral movements of the excavation wall and the total normal interface stresses acting on the concrete sewer were obtained using glotzl total pressure cells. This paper describes the results of the field instrumentation program for acquisition of data, their comparison with the design assumptions, and the results of a series of post-construction finite element analyses of the CHRS project.

An extensive programme of ground instrumentation and observation was carried out for the West Duff in Outfall Sewer tunnel project prior to and during construction, to establish the performance characteristics of the rock through which the tunnel and appurtenant openings were dug and to examine the nature of the lining-to-ground interaction. The existence of high horizontal residual ground stresses was confirmed, and values established by overcoring. Rock deformations and stress changes were monitored during tunnelling. Permanent stress and strain monitoring devices were set into the final lining and these are continuing to operate. INTRODUCTION The site is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario at Pickering, some 20 miles (32 kilometres) east of Toronto, Canada where a variable thickness of glacial or interglacial sediments overlies bituminous shale bedrock of. the Collingwood Formation which is lower Ordovician age. Approximately 50 feet (15 metres) of glacial cover exists at the shaft, though this thins abruptly at the regressing cliffed shoreline such that several small areas of exposed bedrock exist in the lakebed. The general location, overall geological section and detailed site plan and profile are illustrated in Figs.1,2 and 3 respectively. General properties of the rock as established during an extensive test drilling and site investigation programme are listed in Table 1, while stress determination by USER overcoring stress meter device are given in Table ll. These data formed the basis of analyses which were done to examine the intended outfall design, and to detail the construction procedure and the observational instrumentation programme.

The use of ground-probing radar as a reflection mapping tool has expanded greatly in the last few years. This tool can now be used to produce near surface information which is very useful to geotechnical engineers. Using the lightweight field equipment now available, it is possible to use the radar within mines and tunnels to obtain information which may impact the safety and production of these operations.

INTRODUCTION Prior to excavation in soil and rock, it is useful to know the subsurface structure. This is important information both for safety and for equipment scheduling reasons. It is useful to know whether parts of the subsurface might be potentially troublesome or of different character than is generally thought present. By using geophysical probing, it is possible to infer the location and size of these unusual regions. The ground structure is commonly estimated from core samples taken from boreholes. These cores give a detailed knowledge of the structure in the borehole. However, knowledge of the structure exterior to the borehole can only be extrapolated from core data. By using seismic and electromagnetic cross-borehole geophysical probing, remote probing can be used to sense the region exterior to boreholes. A recent advance has significantly improved the state-of-the-art for defining the ground structure between boreholes. This new procedure utilizes large amounts of data and provides a detailed picture of the subsurface. The data processing algorithms used are similar to those in medical imaging of the human body using x-rays, a science called x-ray tomography. This imaging of the ground is called geotomography, which is a shortened acronym for geophysical tomography. Several examples of geotomography applied to imaging ground structure are presented. Our approach has been to probe the ground with electromagnetic and seismic waves. We map the region of interest with signals transmitted between multiple source and receiver pairs lowered in boreholes on opposite sides of the region (Figure 1). INTRODUCTION The use of roof and rock bolts to reinforce the strata is an established method of rock support in both underground and surface excavations. However, the need to drill a hole, extract the drill-rods, and then place the bolt is time-consuming and costly. This becomes even more significant if the bolting is repetitive and extensive as in coal mining. Though the main thrust of this development was directed towards coal mining, the basic concepts are also widely applicable to all excavations. The authors, therefore, feel that this innovation should be of interest in rapid excavation and in tunneling. In the case of coal mining, it has been established from past statistics that the roof-bolting operation is the most hazardous activity. This is primarily because of the operator being exposed to unsupported ground. It is evident that remote installation of roof bolts would markedly improve the safety of the operation, if accomplished more readily with self-drilling bolts rather than the conventional two-step variety operation. Thus, in addition to increasing productivity, this development can be considered to be a milestone towards further improvements. The objective of this program was to establish the technical and economic feasibility of self-drilling roof bolts for use in coal mines. It might be clarified at the outset that this work was, therefore, directed primarily at showing that workable self-drilling bolts with less cost can be developed, which could be effectively used in mines. It was not to fabricate a production model bolt.

INTRODUCTION During the various stages of an underground project from inception through design and construction, probably the single factor of most interest and concern is the nature of the ground. The ground conditions more than any other item govern costs and feasibility; and although the methods available for assessing the ground have become increasingly reliable during the past thirty years, it is still very difficult in many cases to predict the behaviour of soil and rock during and after excavation. To help in this ground evaluation process, we have frequently supplemented the boring program with one or more large diameter inspection holes; and during the past eighteen years, seventeen of these holes have been constructed on tunnel projects which we have designed. There are references in the literature to similar inspection holes (1); however, as far as we are aware, no detailed description of them has been published. The behaviour of soil or rock during and after excavation and the effect of ground water on tunneling operations are of vital interest to tunnel designers and contractors. A comprehensive geotechnical investigation is therefore among the early and most important tasks carried out on a tunnel project and the backbone of every geotechnical investigation is the boring program. A series of borings, typically 50 to 100 mm (21 to 4 in) diameter, are drilled from which soil samples or rock core are recovered and the ground water observed.

The tunneling construction industry faces a new challenge in endeavoring to comply with the multitude of regulations and standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and to work following accepted and experienced tunneling practices. Tunnel inspections appear to be gaining in priority. The national OSHA inspection activities reported for the year 1976 in the construction industry are as follows: 989 Inspections 45 As result of Accidents 186 As result of Complaints 605 General 153 Follow Up 34% Were found to be in compliance 714 Citations were Issued 1,825 Violations were found (201 of which were serious; 1573 were non-serious; 51 were imminent danger. There were no recorded failures to abate a violation in our industry.) The five general priorities by which a company would be scheduled for an inspection in descending order are: imminent danger situations, reports of fatal accidents or catastrophies, inspections in response to valid employee C( taints, inspections of work places covered by National Emphasis Program NEP, (OSHA's NEP has been designed to impact on any industry having a very high injury or illness rate) and finally random inspections of work places covered by OSHA. The following criteria in selecting companies for random inspections is used by OSHA.

INTRODUCTION This paper presents (1) modified slipform system which was employed for simultaneous concrete placement for permanent lining and Instruction of a partition wall in the execution of a ventilation shaft 620m deep, and (2) current shaft sinking techniques which have been applicable and efficient for the subsurface conditions in Japan. MODIFIED SLIPFORM SYSTEM FOR PERMANENT LINING OF VERTICAL SHAFT General Information This paragraph deals with rapid construction by using modified slipform system for the permanent concrete lining and a partition wall of ventilation shaft, which has inside diameter of 620m and depth of 620m, of Enasan Highway Tunnel. The general feature of the shaft is illustrated in Fig. 1 and standard section of the shaft is illustrated in Fig. 2. The geological condition surrounding the shaft is mainly of ryolite and surface is of talus, but as a whole, they are rather weak and weathered rocks with faults, fissures and clay seams. 220mm borehole for the geological investigation was used as a drainage hole, predicting the amount of water inflow into the shaft to be 10t/min. The shaft was executed mainly by means of the conventional short step sinking method of 1.2m lift, employing temporary headframe and hoists. For each lift, 40 to 50cm thick temporary concrete lining was used. About 28,600m3 of rocks were excavated and

As an important part of the concept validation phase of the MX Advanced ICBM development program, Air Force System Command's Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM) Program Office developed and demonstrated large trenching and cast-in-place equipment for placing many miles of buried concrete tunnel rapidly and economically. A tunnel or "buried trench" containing a mobile ICBM is one of the candidate basing models for MX. Upon remote command, the cannister housing the missile would break out of its concrete tunnel and earth overburden by erecting itself to a suitable angle and then launching the missile. The ICBM Program Office developed two each trenchers, cast-in-place machines, and breakout mechanisms, as well as a mobile concrete truck unloader. The machines were demonstrated in varying soil conditions in the southwest US. The breakout mechanisms were demonstrated nearby as well. INTRODUCTION This contract is the most northerly portion of the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago's Tunnel and Reservoir Plan. (TARP) The project begins at Addison Street in Chicago and proceeds northerly approximately ten miles to end at Wilmette Harbor and Lake Michigan. The project which consists of 2 work shafts, 32 drop shafts, 7.322 km (24,020 ft.) of 6.7 m (22 ft.) diameter circular rock tunnel, 8.458 km (27,750 ft.) of 9.2 m (30 ft.) diameter circular rock tunnel and miscellaneous rock bolting and grouting, was bid for a total cost of $63,140,480. The tunnel invert elevation varies from 65.5 m (215 ft.) to 77.4 m (254 ft.) below the ground surface, which places the tunnel in a rock formation of dolomite limestone. At the tunnel invert, the unconfined compressive strength of the limestone varies from 96 MPa (14,000 psi) to 152 MPa (22,000 psi). The 6.7 (22 ft.) diameter tunnel required the mining of 10.9 cu m. (14.2 cu yd.) of rock per lineal foot of tunnel while the 9.2 m (30 ft.) diameter tunnel required the mining of 20.1 cu m (26.3 cu yd.) of rock per lineal foot of tunnel. The total cubic meters of rock required to be excavated from both tunnels was 818,821 cu m (1,070,978 cu yd.). All of this will be mined by tunnel boring machines (TBM). These tunnels were not to be lined with concrete. The thirty two drop shafts have upper portions that are cylindrical in the overburden and rock sections. They were divided into two groups, depending on diameter, with a different construction method for each group. The first group consisted of twenty three of the
