The publication from which this paper was abstracted is the first at-tempt to correlate all the metallogenic deta compiled by the author for the preparation of the 1:2,000,000 Metallogenic Map of Central America. It is not a treaty of metallogenic theories but rather a careful effort to postulate metallogenic provinces and epochs with the intention to stimulate other geologists and mining companies familiar with the area to criticize and improve on the ideas proposed. The sole purpose being to find new mineral deposits for the betterment of our people.

INTRODUCTION The phenomenon of heat-weakening of rock with 10.6 micron radiation from a continuous-wave C02 gas laser has been investigated in detail at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for over 5 years. The programs at MIT have explored the basic nature of the heat-weakening phenomena and rock fracture caused by heating (e.g., Refs. 1 and 2), and have resulted in quantitative estimates of the relationship between the amount and parer level of heating and the resulting decrease in the modulus of rupture of a rock beam in a three-point bend test (Ref. 3). Results of the tests reported in Ref. 3 indicate a greater than 90% reduction in the modulus of rupture for granite beams heat-weakened by a laser. These results prompted the U. S. Department of Transportation to seek an assessment of the expected feasibility of employing the heat- weakening concept in a full-scale tunnel boring operation. Present- day continuous rock-tunneling machines have demonstrated tunneling time and cost savings over drill-and-blast methods, when used in rock types that are easily broken by the cutters. Although tunneling machines have attained very high advance rates in medium-hard rocks, the need for frequent repairs has slowed their use in very hard rocks. Laser- assisted tunneling is expected to improve tunneling machine performance by improving either specific energy or amount and quality of muck. The beneficial effects of lasing are the initiation and growth of microcracks from differential thermal expansion of grains, and overall spalling in the vicinity of the lased area. Using a constant thrust rock cutting device with disk cutters, the effects of cutter geometry, cutter diameter, thrust, and speed variations on specific energy and muck were explored and the improvement in performance of disk cutters caused by lasing was evaluated. It was found that the improvement depends on beam power and density, beam speed, pattern of heating, and cutting pattern and procedure. A focused beam slightly offset from the cutter path gives the most improvement both when cutting on a smooth surface and when cutting in previously cut grooves.

Introduction The stress field around a supported tunnel can be considered as being composed of: i) the virgin (pre-mining) stress in the rock ii) the (elastic) change in this stress field caused by creating the opening iii) the (time-dependent ) change in the stress field produced by (i) and (ii) as a section of the rock breaks up iv) the (time-dependent) influence of the stress build-up in the support. Several authors have examined the conditions necessary to produce static equilibrium between the support, the rock, and the regional (in-situ) stress field. The analysis used by Labasse (1) is typical. Consider a circular tunnel radius R in a hydrostatic stress field (P), and a radial pressure pi exerted by the support. According to Labasse, the radius ‘b’ to which the rock will break* for a given support pressure, pi, can be calculated from: - the equilibrium equation: [ ] As a zone of broken rock develops around the opening, the stress circle for a point on the elastic-broken rock boundary moves to the right in the Mohr diagram until the radial stress in the broken zone s equal to the radial stress in the elastic zone.

"Drilling results from the established levels at AngloRouyn Mines Limited had indicated inadequate tonnages to meet the planning schedule. It was decided to develop the main zone of the orebody below the bottom working level of the mine. The orebody dips north at an average of 50 degrees and plunges to the west at about 10 degrees. Due to the need for rapid development of this area, a decision was made to use trackless equipment.This paper describes the method used and highlights the use of small 5-ton diesel trucks as carriers for the 2-cu.yd LHD machine. The method achieved advances of about 1,000 feet per month, at a dip of 12 degrees over a length of close to 2,000 feet, using as few as 20 men per day."

This report describes exhaust-emission data from 10 diesel engines: six 4-cycle, direct-injection, naturally aspirated engines; two 4-cycle, direct-injection, turbocharged engines; one 4-cycle, precombustion-chamber, turbo-charged engine; and one 2-cycle, direct-injection engine. These engines were tested over a 3-year period (1968-70). Lowest emissions were obtained with a precombustion-chamber engine. Emissions from the 2-cycle, direct-injection engine fell within the range of emission rates for the 4-cycle, naturally aspirated, direct-injection engines. Excluding the precombustion-chamber engine and excepting one of the 4-cycle, naturally aspirated engines, carbon monoxide emission rates were about the same for all engines tested. Test data on smoke, odor, and emissions of hydrocarbons, oxides of nitro-gen, carbon monoxide, and aldehydes are given.

"An unparalleled growth in the Canadian coal industry in 1970 coincided with increasing awareness by Canadians of their environment and their geography with its accompanying transportation factors. R and D on coal moved with greater emphasis toward solving problems in these areas as well as continuing with strong interest in coal preparation, carbonization, combustion, ""weathering'', spontaneous ignition, storage, exploration and geology. Long-range ""basic"" research was not forgotten in that work continued on coal-based carbons, coal chemistry and agrobiological uses for coal. This paper reviews the status of these many areas of coal research at the beginning of the seventies and takes note of some of the more significant legislation and projects brought to the author's attention. No attempt is made to itemize or to describe in detail all the worthwhile projects, many of which are reported elsewhere."

In many engineering structures, the mechanical properties of large volumes of rock must be considered. Typically, such properties are assumed to be the same as those of small laboratory samples, although it is clear that the laboratory samples do not contain the joints, faults, and other natural planes of weakness of the rock mass. A cheap, convenient testing procedure is needed with which the engineer can more accurately assess the strength and elastic properties of natural jointed rock. As a first step in this direction, a test has been developed capable of determining mechanical properties of large samples in their natural undisturbed state. In the present paper, some preliminary experiments on relatively unjointed material are described. Numerous attempts have been made to measure the deformation modulus of rock masses with varying degrees of success. Rocha (1), Grimm (2), and Alexander (3) have placed flat jacks in a slot in the rock and measured the pressure required to deform the slot. Bonnechere (4) has grouted large flat jacks in granite masses and performed similar experiments using a variety of strain measuring techniques. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has conducted radial jacking tests in which a uniform radial stress is applied to the inside of a tunnel of circular cross section and radial deformation is measured by extensometers located at various depths in the tunnel fall. Plate jack tests (Rocha (5), Shannon and Wilson (6)), pressure chamber tests, and cable jacking tests (Zienkiewicz and Stagg (7)) have all been used to determine in-situ deformation modulus. Several bore hole techniques have also been used to measure rock deformation. These include bore hole jacks (Goodman (8)), bore hole dilatometers using expandable membranes (Menard (9)) and bore hole penetrometers. Most of the above tests except the radial jacking test have an unknown stress distribution and require considerable approximation to calculate a deformation modulus. These approximations include the use of elastic theory for solutions of rigid plates, thick-walled cylinders, etc., and determination of values for Poissons

It started' in 1936 when some Dutch adventurers wanted to scale the highest mountain in the South Pacific. Quite by accident, they discovered the Ertsberg, a contact deposit of magnetite laced with chalcopyrite, in a high mountain valley where it had been gouged at by glaciers and finally left as a solitary pillar for its discovery by a geologist who lent purpose to the expedition, Dr. J.J. Dozy. By the-.time a report was published describing the deposit, war had hit the Netherlands. Perhaps again by accident, the report was uncovered in 1959 by the East Borneo Company. At this point, Freeport entered the scene through its vice president for exploration, Forbes Wilson. During the course of a meeting on laterite prospects, the Ertsberg was introduced and he put the wheels into motion for Freeport to join in its exploration. You might, at this point, ask yourself whether you or your company would have taken on a venture to look at a reportedly large high grade copper outcrop in New Guinea, an unexplored land known best for its inhospitable climate, terrain and head-hunters. I heard the chief executive of one large mining company comment sometime back that neither he nor his company would have gotten involved. I won't attempt to describe the trials of the initial exploration expedition that passed through dense-man grove swamps, tropical jungle and across jagged mountains a distance of some 200 miles to get to the Ertsberg in 1960. It should be chronicled by its participants - Forbes Wilson, Del Flint, and John Bowenkamp. Needless to say, the participants relish the experience but wouldn't be among those volunteering for a return engagement. As a result, the Ertsberg changed from a reported outcrop to a mineral deposit containing an estimated 13 million tons with systematic surface sampling indicating a copper grade of over four percent. Moreover, the deposit extended to an indeterminate depth with the possibility of doubling or tripling. reserves well within reason.

This volume summarizes mining and petroleum legislation in 25 jurisdictions of East Asia and the Pacific. Within these jurisdictions, primary attention is given to requirements that must be met in each country for acquisition of rights to permit development of mineral resources. Coverage includes: First, identification of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; and third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added. In countries where minerals are subject to control of States or Provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

A 9-month study of the uses of wire rope associated with U. S. underground coal mining is reported. Rope applications are broken down into hoisting and nonhoisting applications where "hoisting" refers to transport in vertical and inclined shafts. The former receives the greatest emphasis since it represents the most critical rope application from the stand-point of production and safety. The discussion of hoisting practice includes aspects related to the mine operators as well as those related to the equipment builders and wire rope manufacturers. U. S. state and Federal laws regulating hoisting and wire rope use are also presented and discussed. Canadian and other foreign hoisting practice and laws are included. The state of the art in electromagnetic nondestructive inspection of hoist ropes is presented. Capabilities and use of one Canadian electromagnetic device are discussed in great detail. Conclusions are drawn regarding the present state of wire rope and hoisting technology in U. S. coal mines. Recommendations are made for improving rope practice, in general, and hoisting, in particular, consistent with greater safety.

This volume constitutes the Survival Subsystem portion of the final report for the Coal Mine Rescue and Survival System (CMR&SS) program, which was conducted by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation under contract to the United States Bureau of Mines (Contract Number H0101262 dated June 17, 1970). The program was directed by the Special Systems Department of the Westinghouse Baltimore, Maryland, facility. The basic objectives of the CMR&SS program were to develop and test hardware to determine the efficacy of a variety of coal mine rescue and survival concepts and techniques. These concepts were drawn from two major sources: the Request for Proposal from the Bureau of Mines1 and the final report on the Mine Rescue and Survival Study conducted by the National Academy of Engineering2 (NAE).

The design, specification, and performance evaluation of the Communications and Location portions of a Coal Mine Rescue and Survival System are described. The work was performed as part of a nine month effort to develop a mine rescue and survival system using existing technology and state -of-the -art hardware as recommended by the National Academy of Engineering. Three basic subsystems were developed, one for survival, one for communications/location and one for rescue. This report and related equipment manuals describe only the Communications/ Location Subsystem which was designed, fabricated, and tested by the Westinghouse Georesearch Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado. Two basic technologies were used. Electromagnetic signals propagating through-the-earth provide voice downlink and coded beacon up-link communications. Seismic methods were developed to provide means for locating trapped miners. Seismic signalling also provides a backup means for communications. Parallel development programs for the electromagnetic and seismic portions of the system were conducted. The resulting hardware and software have been partially tested in coal mines and under simulated emergency conditions in order to evaluate system performance. The results of these tests are discussed. Further testing is recommended in order to establish quantitative performance limitations tinder a variety of environmental conditions and to develop methods for improving system performance.

The Bureau of Mines in the Department of the Interior is increasingly concerned with the safety and health of personnel engaged in coal-mining operations, particularly below ground. The Bureau is also concerned with improving the utilization of domestic mineral resources, and reducing the environmental impact of mineral operations. One obvious way to improve safety and minimize health hazards would be to eliminate coal mining entirely by bringing the energy value of the coal to the surface in some other way, such as by partially burning it underground to form combustible gases and bringing these gases to the surface, where their energy content can be put to use. This technique might also improve the utilization of the coal resource. ? Accordingly, the Bureau of Mines, interested in re-evaluating underground coal gasification technology in terms of current and expected conditions in the United States, requested Arthur D. Little, Inc., (ADL) to appraise the technology to determine: ? Whether the current (1971) state of the technology offers a technically feasible method for gasifying coal underground that is applicable to the reserves of bituminous and lower rank coals in the United States. ? Whether a program of research and further development of the technology could ultimately make it a technically feasible alternative to current open-pit and underground coal mining operations. ? What the nature and cost of further research and development work in the technology should be.

In a Bureau of Mines supply evaluation, the known uranium resources in the United States are estimated to have a total recoverable uranium oxide (U3O8) content of 3,132,400 tons at prices up to $69.32 per pound. Only those resources were evaluated for which sufficient quantity data are available and process technology exists for recovering uranium. A total of 160,800 tons of U3O8 is available at $8 per pound from ore deposits presently mined and an additional 244,700 tons available at prices up to $30 per pound from similar but usually lower grade deposits. A total of 2,726,900 tons of U3O8 is available from four other resources: copper leach solutions, wet-process phosphoric acid, Florida phosphate rock Leached zone, and Chattanooga Shale. These resources contain from 30,000 tons of recoverable U30, at a price of $7.52 per pound as a byproduct of copper leach solutions to 2,557,300 tons at a price of $69.32 per pound from Chattanooga Shale.

Statistics For 1956-66 show that mine transportation accidents accounted for 19 percent of fatalities in bituminous coal mines, second only to roof deficiencies as a cause of death. Productivity per man-shift increased from 10.2 tons in 1956 to 18.4 tons in 1966, but the fatalities per million man- hours of exposure also increased from 0.19 to 0.21 during that same period, indicating that transportation hazards still persist. Consequently, the Bureau of Mines reviewed the transportation fatalities that occurred in bituminous coal mines during 1956-66. The data were processed by computer to find what constitute hazardous conditions and unsafe actions as well as to correlate occupation and age of victims, transportation type, and mine production. Environmental factors and equipment defects which create hazards, as well as unsafe actions of personnel, were determined for each type of mine transportation: Track haulage, mobile nonrail haulage, conveyors, hoists, automotive operations, and front -end loaders, and for transfer stations (loading points, slope and shaft bottoms, surface transfers) and railroad yards. Man-trip accidents, a group with a catastrophe potential, also were analyzed. The basic design and operational features of each transportation type were outlined and procedures considered safe in the light of accident experience were suggested. Findings show that unsafe actions of personnel and hazards created by environmental deficiencies or equipment malfunctions contribute equally in causing transportation accidents. Accordingly efforts should be directed toward improving working conditions, equipment maintenance, and education and training of employees. The trend is toward using safer modes of transportation, notably conveyors. More attention should be given to track haulage operation, railroad yards, and nondestructive field testing of materials.

The design of most underground support systems has largely been based upon empirical rules. This design method has proven to be satisfactory in most cases as witnessed by the number of successfully completed works. However, the adequacy of this approach to the developing technology of ground support systems associated with deep excavation has not been substantiated. In cases where the material has definite time-dependent behavior parameters, rules of past experience become extremely vague and conservative. The Spokane Mining Research Center is currently engaged in extensive research to develop rational design methods for underground structures which will account for the many interacting factors such as in-situ properties of the rock mass, excavation methods, proposed types of support system, construction sequence, and environmental variables. The information presented in this paper pertains to only a segment of the research program,

In the past 100 years in the mining industry, many references are made to the "Widow Makers", 'Miners Con" and many other derogatory names related to physical hazards. They reflect the lack of understanding of the problem facing the early day miner. Workers were enticed, in some cases, to take a chance against a medical question mark that could not be explained by the doctors of those early days. The optimism of the mining man and the challenge of work led him to believe that the physical results could not apply to himself and only applied to some of his fellow workers. Much of the time, to his dismay, he found that he had lost to the game of chance. As medical knowledge improved and mining management began to understand the effects of conditions in the mines and beneficiation plants, steps were taken to alleviate or eliminate the health hazards that were present, The organizations engaged in mining that did not take an active interest in employee health found themselves to eventually be placed in the position of being forced to take action by Federal and State legislation. We find ourselves in the 1970's on the threshold of a new era where the general public is concerned vociferously about "their" environment and the industry feels the governmental controls more strongly than ever before. It can be said that in the past 100 years we have advanced from the "Widow Makers" of the 1870's to the "Retirement Makers" of today. The difficulties of the early days in underground mining were of times compounded in the beneficiation plants above ground. As late as the 1950's some crushing and milling installations in the United States were operating under environmental conditions that complied to the then existing legislation but were below the health level sought by conscientious management. The Mission Concentrator Crushing Plant was designed in 1959 and placed in operation in July, 1961. The Bunker Hill Mine, located in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District at Kellogg, Idaho, has been a major producer of lead-silver-zinc ores since its discovery in 1887. The mine has produced over 29 million tons of ore from some 20 to 25 veins and ore zones, and now covers an area approximately one mile in length and one-half mile in width. The active section of the mine extends from 2500 ft above sea level to 1600 ft below sea level. Production is presently at the rate of about 1700 tons of ore per day. A two-mile adit, the Kellogg Tunnel, at the 2500 elevation, provides access to the main shaft area. Ore is hoisted to the adit level through a 5000-ft, 500-inclined shaft, extending to the lowermost haulage level 1200 ft below sea level. Primary shaft service for men and materials is supplied by three major internal, inclined shafts equipped with double-drum hoists. Present production requires ten levels to serve for mainline track haulage. These range up to 5000 ft in length and are either 200 or 400 vertical feet apart. Also, many intermediate levels exist throughout the mine. The conventional and autoloader mechanized square-set and cut-and-fill mining methods used throughout the mine have been the subject of a recent paper(l). One-third of current production is from vein-type ore bodies which are long distances from main shaft areas. Such veins generally dip about 450, have relatively narrow widths of from 3 to 20 ft, and usually contain less than 500,000 tons of ore. For many years, ore bodies thus situated have been developed by means of a separate inclined, timbered service shaft-raise connecting two or more main haulage levels. These commonly range from 400 to 1000 ft in vertical extent and are equipped with 25 to 50 hp electric, single-drum hoists. Intermediate levels are driven as conventional track drifts at 100-ft vertical intervals between the haulage levels. Ore and waste from the intermediate levels are trammed to orepasses for delivery to the lowermost haulage level servicing an ore body. The final result may be visualized as a number of small mines within a large mine. The problems of high development costs and high total development time, and the large amount and high cost of providing materials handl ing and ore haulage service while producing from this isolated type of stope block, made it desirable to consider totally new approaches in developing and mining a number of similar areas.
