Experiments on both suljidation and hot corrosion have been carried out using ternary Ni-Cr-X alloys and commercial nickel-base superalloys. It has been shown that lhere are certain micro structural similarities between sulfidation using H,S/H2 mixtures and hot corvosion using Na,S04 in "crucible" experiments or hot corrosion tests using a flame tunnel apparatus. It is proposed that two key processes in the hot cowosion process are: 1) formation of chromium sulfides which deplete the alloy matrix, and 2) oxidation which can be accelerated because of chromium depletion. Other processes play an important role in the hot corrosion process, such as accelerated oxidation attack due to the presence of a N& S04 or N&SO,- NaC2 film which inhibits the formation of a protective external oxide scale. However, this latter phenomenon was not studied in this work. THE term hot corrosion has come to mean a combination of sulfur and oxygen attack on nickel-base or cobalt-base superalloys used as gas turbine blades or partitions. This attack can be initiated by any combustion process in air involving fuel containing sulfur if the sulfur level is sufficiently high. Levels of 5 pet SO2l for example, in the combusting gas have been observed to produce hot corrosion attack on nickel-base alloys. The important immediate corroding medium in aircraft gas turbines, however, has been established to be Na2S04, formed from reaction between NaCl from sea air and sulfur in the fuel.' The Na2S04 concentrates the sulfur sufficiently so that superalloy parts heated in the range 1400" to 1900°F can become sulfided by reducing the Na2S04 film which forms on the parts, and this reaction allows sulfur to gain access to the alloy. The sulfur thus released diffuses into the superalloy and forms primarily chromium sulfides of various compositions, but frequently Cr2S, has been identified. Figs. 1 and 2 show the morphology typical of hot corrosion of a cobalt-base superalloy X-45 (25 Cr, 10 Ni, 7.5 W, 0.25 C) and a nickel-base alloy, Udimet 500 (19 Cr, 19 Co, 4 Mo, 3 Ti, 2.9 Al, 0.07 C). Both alloy samples were subjected to the same hot corrosion conditions: 616 hr at 1600°F in a combusted 2.9 pct S distillate oil containing 125 ppm Na as NaC1. It will be noted at once that the nickel-base alloy is much more severely attacked. The depth of corrosion is much greater and the number and size of the sulfides present are much greater. Both alloys show a duplex oxide scale, which is more noticeable in the X-45 alloy. The external scale is probably a spinel in both cases, with CrQ3 lying next to the alloy. Many investigators1 -"ve been concerned with hot corrosion phenomena, but there has been a lack of unanimity of opinion as to the details of the hot corrosion mechanism. More than one definition of hot corrosion is possible. Some investigators con- sider as a measure of hot corrosion only the weight gain due to an accelerated oxidation. However another point of view is that the total depth of affected alloy may be used as a measure. While it is recognized that surface oxidation attack is greatly accelerated by the presence of salts like Na2S04 or Na2S04-NaC1 mixtures, sulfur penetration into the alloy also undoubtedly produces very important effects. The region of sul-fide penetration which is so prominent in Fig. 2 is one of the outstanding characteristics of hot corrosion. For highly stressed parts, such as first-stage buckets, this sulfur-penetrated region can be more significant in mechanical property loss than the reduction of cross section produced by the formation of the massive external scale. In addition, evidence will be presented that this sulfided region can be less resistant to subsequent oxidation attack. "The coal reserves of the Crow's Nest Basin in British Columbia have been known since the late 1860's. The 51.0-million-long-ton (over 15 years) sale of low-volatile coking coal to Japanese steel mills, as finalized in 1968, establishes the importance of these coal reserves in the world markets.In the early stages of the exploration program, which began in January, 1967, emphasis was placed on deter-mining the reserve of underground low-pitch coal within the No. 10 or Balmer seam of the Kootenay coal forma-tion. The finding of low-cover reserves in excess of 100,000,000 tons altered the initially planned underground program. Extensive tests were performed, establishing the excellent coking characteristics of the open-cast Balmer coal. Due recognition was given to the ultimate reclamation costs of mined lands and associated spoil areas.t was determined that, to achieve the costs desired, a high productivity was necessary, requiring large mining equipment. Operating criteria were set out, based on producing 4.2 million tons of clean coal per year. To optimize recovery, the preparation plant feed size was fixed at Yi in. x 0. The initial basic design capacity of the plant was 1,000 tph. The washing plant is composed essentially of four separate cleaning sections: a dedusting section; a multi-stage heavy media cyclone section; water cyclones; and flotation cells. Subsequent to the basic program, additional sales were made of 6.0 million long tons over the initial three-year period and the plant capacity was raised to 1,400 tph through the addition of a 400-tph coarse-coal treatment section. All wet coal products from the fine coal plant will be dried in a 70-tph (water) heat dryer. A unit-train concept of coal transportation between the mine site and the Westward Terminals at Roberts Bank has been negotiated with the Canadian Pacific Railroad. Facilities at the port will include a 4,000-tph rotary car bumper, 400,000-ton clean-coal stockpiles, and a bucket reclaiming system having a total ship-loading capacity of 6,000 tph."

Factual data about the sedimentation in the Newcastle Coal. Measures are presented. Data concerning the total coal measure sequence (isopachs, sand /shale ratio and total coal thickness variation), data about three coal seams (Borehole, Dudley and Victoria Tunnel) and data about interseam con- glomerate units are discussed. From this data conclusions are drawn about the coal measure environment. The western edge of the coal basin, the Lochinvar Dome, although a high feature was apparently stable during coal measure time. Despite its height it apparently supplied little sediment to the basin. The northern and north-eastern edge, which was unstable, suppl- ied most of the coarse detritus including the conglomerates to the basin. The conglomerates show patterns of fluvial origin but after a period of "normal" variations in pattern they become restricted to two parallel zones evidently tectonically controlled. Deposition of conglomerates is episodic and separated by periods of coal formation when deformation was apparently slight. Formation of each of the three seams considered followed a rather similar pattern - each shows development of thick coal around the basin edge and poor thin coal in the "axial" region of the present synclinal structure. Evidence of in-situ formation of some areas of the seams is discussed and periodic deformation of the basin during coal measure time is postulated.

In the crushing and grinding of metallics for beneficiation, the sizing is normally done to liberate the metals or sulphides for further processing to improve recoveries of the basic metals or minerals. The objective is to reduce the ore in size through various closely controlled stages to that degree of fineness which gives an economic liberation of valuable mineral, but which avoids as much as possible the production of sliming fractions. A different philosophy applies to the crushing and grinding of Gypsum. Our requirements normally demand controlled grinding and/or crushing of the material not only to a fineness suitable for further processing of the mineral into end products, but to produce various sizes of material which are them- selves saleable products. The majority of our tonnage ultimately ends up in stucco for Wallboard. Therefore, our mineral reduction is normally designed toward this end, but it is done in a manner that permits drawing off inter- mediate products to meet various Customer requirements. This forces us into compromises at times in our equipment installations, and our equipment must sometimes be more versatile and complex than we would like it to be. We try to process our basic rock, Gypsum, for the most efficient size reduction. We market 5 to 6 different sizes intermediate to the end product, which generally is the fineness of material to be used for stucco for Wallboard, and we do this with controlled crushing, grinding and sizing cycles of the material. To summarize, we use a different philosophy of crushing and grinding than the metallic field which uses comminution or crushing and grinding to improve recovery, whereas we choose our equipment to crush and grind primarily for product performance.

"Located on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River at Pointe Noire, Quebec are the agglomeration and ship-ping facilities of the Wabush Mines complex. Here, the specular hematite concentrate from the Scully Mine is received for further processing. Modern facilities for handling the ore, either to the 1plant or to stockpile, provide quick and efficient operation of the ore receiving station. Physical preparation of the ore for balling is accomplished with regrind ball mills, filters, bentonite crushing and drying facilities, pumps and related conveying circuits. Rotating table feeders deliver the reground and de-watered ore from storage bins to balling drums, where green ball or green pellet formation is achieved. The green balls are then conveyed to the indurating section. Three Dravo-Lurgi travelling grates, producing a total of 6,000,000 long dry tons of pellets per year, are used in the indurating phase of the operation. These grates, having 38 windboxes and firing at a temperature of 2,500°F, harden the pellets for shipment to various blast furnaces throughout the world."

Anticipating the availability of tiltmeters suitable for use in boreholes, this article proposes a method of using one or more of these meters to determine in situ stress distribution before and after mining operations. Several ways of using relief techniques to measure in situ stresses in rocks have been developed. These techniques, summarized by Merrill,1 involve measuring deformations which take place when a specimen of rock is wholly or partially isolated from the stress field in the surrounding rock. Measurements of rock deformation caused by stress relief from mining operations can, in principle, also be used to estimate in situ stress distributions. Müller2 has mentioned experiments being carried on in Austria with a "deformation indicator" to determine the tilting of holes drilled before a mine opening is made. Similar work using borehole extensometers has been reported by Potts? and Duvall4 has called attention to the possible use of tiltmeters in making these measurements. Considerable attention is now being paid to the use of tiltmeters in detecting rock deformation associated with fault movements, earthquakes, earth tides, etc. The instruments used for these measurements have usually been of the mercury tube, water tube, or quartz fiber type, but because of their large size, and/or fragile nature, such instruments would not be suitable for use in mining stress measurements. Recent instrumentation developments, however, give promise that rugged, sensitive tiltmeters small enough for use in boreholes may soon be available.' In anticipation of these developments, this article presents a number of calculations of the possibility of using one or more tiltmeters emplaced in a drill hole prior to mining operations to determine the in situ stress distribution both before and after a mining operation. Although there has been an increased interest in the electrokinetic properties of coal (1) research on the subject is still in an early stage of development (2,3,4,5,6,7) To the author's knowledge, no electrokinetic studies have been made on coal lithotypes - particularly anthracite lithotypes. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the double layer properties displayed at the anthracite/water interface (whole coal and lithotypes) as determined by streaming potential methods, It is hoped that this investigation and related future investigations will provide correlations from which the surface properties of any coal can be predicted and then related to surface dependent processes such as froth flotation and flocculation. Another aspect of this research, undertaken to determine the physical and chemical parameters necessary for anthracite lithotype differentiation, was previously published (8). The number of parameters involved, lithologic, organic and inorganic, and the wide divergence of these parameters within an individual coal limits the practical utilization of the results, however, the results are of value and of interest in guiding theoretical developments. Keeping the limitations in mind, the results are analyzed in terms of their application to froth flotation processes and are used to indicate the feasibility of making a lithotype separation by flotation.

The Bureau of Mines surveyed the solid wastes that have accumulated from coal mining in Washington, Oregon, and Montana. Location, amount, character, and condition were determined, and both economic and environmental factors were considered. Areas covered by waste comprise 800 acres in Washington, 5 acres in Oregon, and 1,200 acres in Montana. In a few cases waste is being utilized, particularly cinder from burned refuse dumps, as fill in road construction and as a ceramic raw material. It is estimated that wastes deriving from coal mined for electric power generation by 1974 may amount to 3 million tons of washery refuse, 2.7 million tons of fly ash, and 1,000 acres of spoil banks.

The Bureau of Mines stabilized 10 acres of windblown copper mill tailings at McGill, Nev., by a combination chemical-vegetative procedure. Legumes, winter wheat, wheat-grasses, and wild rye were seeded, and the area was subsequently sprayed with a resinous adhesive chemical to stabilize the sands until the vegetation could grow. During the year since treatment, the area has been well stabilized against wind erosion. The established vegetation appears to be capable of self-perpetuation and renewal without irrigation. The cost of stabilizing the area was $135.50 per acre.

The conventional cyclic system of deep-level mining by drilling and blasting gives rise to an inadequate degree of stope sorting when mining thin reefs. This results in poor utilization of the capital facilities of a mine in the form of shafts, haulages, airways and associated equipment. Continuous and controlled removal of the thin gold-bearing portion of the reefs would permit better stope sorting and hence greater utilization of capital facilities. Results of experiments to develop hard rock cutting machines for mining are reported and the benefits which could be derived from their use are discussed.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the threshold of dispersal of monolayers and piles of rock dust, anthracite, and Pittsburgh seam coal dust in a small wind tunnel that simulated a coal mine gallery, with the objective of preventing or limiting the formation of flammable dust clouds. The effect of selected variables on entrainment velocity was examined. Mode of entrainment and flow processes in the wake region of dust configurations were investigated by means of high-speed motion pictures. Significant results were as follows: 1. Local minimum air velocities required for dispersal were only slightly higher for shallow dust ridges than for dust particles. 2. Minimum velocities for entrainment of dust particles from smooth glass and coal surfaces increased in the order rock dust, anthracite, Pittsburgh seam coal. 3. The mechanism for dispersal of dust poles depended significantly on dust pile geometry, cohesiveness of dust, bulk density and compaction of dust, adhesive surface, and vibrations perturbing the supporting surface.

This report describes a monitoring system applied by the Bureau of Mines to provide rapid, continuous determination of the main constituents of exhaust gas during the Bureau's approval schedule testing of diesel engines for under-ground use. Commercially available continuous analyzers with strip chart readout are employed for nitric oxide (mass spectrometric), carbon dioxide (nondispersive infrared), methane (NDIR), carbon monoxide (NDIR), and oxygen (polarographic). Good correlation is obtained between the continuous instrumental results and those obtained by batch chemical and gas chromatographic methods.

This Bureau of Mines report is essentially a handbook, or manual, for making the type of mineral resource valuation commonly required for such public policy problems as mineral leasing. The principle of resource valuation through the capitalization of cash flow is well established. A mathematical procedure, based on a simplified accounting system, is detailed for calculating cash flow from revenue, plant costs, and operating expense. Variations of procedure cover cost depletion, percentage depletion, and depletion limited to 50 percent of net income. The influence of the depletion provisions of the tax regulations on the value of a resource to an owner and to an operator is analyzed. The relationship of royalty, bonus payments, and sales price to resource value is also described, and methods for approximating resource values using these payments as input data are developed.

"The study of the physical properties of asbestos minerals requires a careful isolation of the fiber from the wall rock and, at a later stage, a comparison of these physical properties with those of fibers that have passed through the milling and beneficiation processes.The effects of mineral impurities, loss of fiber length and the formation of extreme fines (asbestic and/or associated minerals) often show up in the formation of special asbestos products as well as in the commercial production of asbestos papers, mill-boards, asbestos cement products, plastics and insulation materials, and in the filtration of blood plasma and wines.Numerous test methods have been developed in Canada and in England for use in the asbestos industry. Special treatments of asbestos fibers have been used to improve their physical and chemical properties and to eliminate impurities.Numerous problems connected with the use of asbestos fibers are discussed, such as the effects of asbestos on filtration, surface area, surface treatments using organic or inorganic materials, the surface charge on the fiber, the presence of magnetite and air pollution elimination. Biological studies on finely ground asbestos, when dispersed in 0.9 per cent sodium chloride solution and then sterilized and injected into hamsters, show that by reducing the dose, the tissue damage can be largely avoided. In these experiments, Arizona asbestos fibers were carefully extracted from the wall rock, finely ground, and examined chemically and micros-copically for any mineral impurities that might be present so that any effect on the hamsters would be directly due to the presence of the asbestos. The harsh Arizona fiber induced more extensive tissue response than the soft fiber when tested in hamsters."

As shafts and tunnels move deeper levels in underground mining, development planning becomes more complex. The most serious problem is the aggravation of environmental conditions due to the imposition of higher-than-natural temperatures upon exposed strata. Since such a problem is a potential hazard to health, safety, and production, the authors have developed a system of computer-derived ambient-air temperature data for every major point of an underground mine under a given set of conditions. This system is comprised of two subsystems: 1) Ventilation network analysis, 2) Estimation of air - current temperature. The former is based on the Hiramatsu-Oka method, an improvement of the Scott-Hinsley method. The Hiramatsu-Oka method allows fast convergence and consideration of various fan characteristics. The latter subsystem considers heat radiation from strata, and the humidity. In several tests conducted at Besshi and Sazare Mines of Japan, the computer-derived data correlated with actual conditions.

In this paper, as in the 1960 CIM paper of the same name, s1gmf1cant new developments in electrical-mechanical mining equipment are briefly described. These include static thyristor-supplied D.C. drives for mine hoists, load-haul-dump systems, process controls with small and medium-size computers, and several other new items of equipment and Concepts. All the new hardware descriptions are given in the context of over-all process integration. This means the actual mechanical linking together of two or more processes and the preliminary step in the development of production-line mining.

"The purpose of this paper is to review the activities of international organizations concerned with the problem of dust hazards in mines and to indicate the extent of Canadian participation in these activities. The work of the International Labour Office in sponsoring conferences and reports on the appraisal and control of dust hazards and in the development of standard radio-logical classifications is considered in some detail. Also discussed are the role of technical societies, such as the American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists, in the development of proposed standards for dust exposure and the functions of international committees concerned with particular hazards, such as the U.I.C.C. (Inter-national Union Against Cancer) Committee on Asbestos and Cancer."

"DEFINITION OF THE REGION, ITS BOUNDARIES, AND PHYSICAL AND GE'OLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICSTHIS PAPER concerns the Western Cordilleran region, embracing most of British Columbia, the southern half of Yukon Territory and the southwestern most part of the District of MacKenzie. It excludes Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands, which are discussed in a background paper on the Pacific Continental Shelf. The region is bounded on the south by the northwestern United States, on the west by the continental shelf and Alaska, on the north by the front of the Ogilvie Mountains, on the northeast by the axis of the MacKenzie Mountains and on the east by the Rocky Mountain Trench.The region is dominated by two mountain chains that con tain icefields and glaciers: the St. Elias, Coast and Cascade Mountains in the west; the Selwyn, Pelly, Cassiar, Omineca and Columbia Mountains in the east. The Intermontane region between these mountain chains consists of lower mountains and plateaus. In the mountains, the region above the timberline and many of the steep valley-walls provide good exposures of rock, but these areas are subject to rockslides and landslides and in winter to snow avalanches. Much of the Western Cordillera was covered by ice-sheets at various times during the Pleistocene epoch. Consequently, the larger valleys in the mountains and much of the Intermontane region contain much glacial drift and alluvium and only limited exposures of rock. This same terrain in the Southern Cordillera, however, is the most favourable for agriculture. Parts of the region, particularly in the two mountain chains, are heavily forested. Elsewhere, the forest cover is less, with grassland prevailing in the south and tundra in the north."

The Robinson mining district in east-central Nevada is itself a century of study in the changing economics of the mining business. It began as a boom and bust area. In the district today, just west of Ely, Nev., the hills are pockmarked with the tunnels and shafts sunk in a frantic scramble for gold and silver before the turn of the century. But as the economics of dwindling reserves, rising costs, and changing markets were stamping out the efforts of the gold and silver seekers, copper took over as the king of the Robinson district. Today, Kennecott Copper Corp. has four open pit mines in the district and is planning a fifth. From these mines, Kennecott produces nearly 40,000 tpy (tons per year) of copper. In its hundred years of history, the district has produced more than $1 billion in mineral values, a richer treasure than that from the more famed Comstock Lode of Virginia City, Nev. Prospectors had reported copper outcroppings in the Robinson district as early as 1872. But the first significant copper orebody was not discovered until 1901. In that year, Dave Bartley and Edwin Gray exposed the top of the porphyry orebody that would become the Ruth mine in a shaft at a depth of 120 ft. Subsequently, other larger orebodies were discovered nearby which have resulted in this area being one of the leading copper producers in the country for some 60 years. Following a period of development and exploration, the Ruth mine started production in 1915 and continued as a prosperous underground mining operation until 1948. The mining industry in Nevada experienced the same increasing cost of labor and supplies that all other mining areas had to contend with, and by 1948 the Ruth mine was no longer profitable.
