DURING the last ten years, in the effort to save manpower and costs, methods of drilling and blasting in Sweden have changed and developed in a revolutionary manner. These developments have been accompanied by extensive alterations in methods of tunneling and in mining technique. Since the end of the 1940's there has been a 100 pct change-over in Sweden to the use of tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. Both investigations and practical results have shown clearly that a tungsten carbide chisel bit fastened directly on the drill steel is the most economical for Swedish conditions. This applies to drill steel up to the longest size it is practical to handle. In terms of drilling footage, durability of the drill steel and the tungsten carbide bit is generally the same. In this respect, therefore, a detachable bit offers no advantage over integral steel. Transportation of integral steel to the grinding plant, instead of detachable bits only, involves heavier work, but this is counteracted by placing grinding plants closer together or by grinding at the working place itself. The drilling rate with integral steel is higher, the trouble of changing bits is avoided, and the difficulties which always arise with joints are eliminated. At present steel dimensions are usually 7/8 in. with a shank 41/4 in. long, whereas the international standard shank was formerly 31/4 in. The longer shank renders possible a better guide control of the steel and consequently longer life for the rotation chuck and the water-flushing pipe. After extensive experiments and investigations, agreement has been reached in Sweden on certain series of standards, shown in Table I. Other steel dimensions are, of course, available for special purposes. The standard drill-steel set begins with a 34-mm diam and has a length interval of 2 2/3 ft. On the other hand, for ordinary drifting it has been proved more economical to use greater length intervals on the steel, so only one steel change is required for a 61/2-ft round. Moreover, owing to the relatively close hole spacing necessary in a drift round, it has been possible to reduce the diameters of the tungsten carbide bits. This results in faster and cheaper drilling. As shown by the table, the lengths of drill steels for normal drifting are 33/4 ft and 71/2 ft, with 29 and 28-mm diam bits. During the last few years operators have begun to use 3/4-in. drill steel in place of the 7/8-in. drill steel chiefly employed earlier. A sample of fifty fractured low chromium-molybdenum alloy drill steel rods was investigated. Each rod was of the forged collar integral tungsten carbide type in common use in Australia.Examination of a new rod of the same type showed that a zone of spheroidized carbide about 0·25 in. wide was present about 12 in. from the shank end.Examination of the fractured rods revealed that 78 per cent. of failures occurred within 0·25 in. of the spheroidized zone at the shank end but in the main stem of the rod rather than actually in this softened zone where it might be expected to occur.This predominant type of failure at the shank end in the steel rods is caused by a highly anodic region corresponding to the first stages of spheroidization of carbides present in the steel. Important reserves of nickel ore occur in the Levies district in Oriente, Cuba. The area is mountainous and mostly covered by heavy vegetation. The ore bodies comprise surface tracts of nickeliferous laterite underlain with decomposed serpentine of ore grade. The Cuban Nickel Co., a wholly owned United States Government corporation, owns a plant for leaching the nickel from its ores at Nicaro, Oriente, Cuba, Between December 1943 and March 31, 1954, 5,902,225 short tons of ore was treated, with a recovery of 116,206,519 pounds of nickel (52,711 metric tons). In 1953, 1,330, 224 short tons of ore was mined and 27;"3,129 pounds of nickel produced. The Cuban Nickel Co. also owns a townsite, with the necessary facilities, mining equipment, and 11 miles of railroad. Ore for the plant has been produced from the Ocujal-San Juan claims on lends owned by the Nicaro Nickel Co., a sub¬sidiary of Freeport Sulphur Co. The Government enterprise is man-aged by the Nickel Processing Corp. The Cuban Nickel Co. has denounced mineral concessions and has purchased other claims from private owners.

Designed by army engineers, the NX borehole camera provides the most economical method of subsurface exploration so far devised. Continuous cylindrical color photographs now reveal minor flaws in foundation bedrock not always disclosed by borehole samples. A unique projector transforms the photographs into true-to-scale images of three dimensions. ANEW milestone in the progress of photography and subsurface exploration was reached when the Chief of Army Engineers announced the development of the NX borehole camera. In obtaining continuous undistorted cylindrical color pictures of dry or water-filled borings the device surpasses all other cameras designed for photographing interior surfaces of pipes, wells, and conduits. The usefulness of the camera and the unique projector that comes with it are at once apparent. To the geological, mining, and civil engineer alike it signifies the end of guesswork with respect to underground conditions that have eluded identification by conventional core-drilling methods. To the medical profession it may well signal new progress in photo optics which could result in cylindrical color photographs supplementing the X-ray and existing photographic methods used in exploratory surgery. The pilot model of the camera has more than paid for itself as a result of its success in bringing to the surface at two dams information previously obtainable only by costly drilling of mansized boreholes for subsurface on-the-spot examination. Such bores cost as much as $200 per lineal foot as against $10 per ft for the conventional 3-in. or NX exploratory core borings from which the present invention derives its name. The NX camera can now photograph completely the interior surface of these borings. Research and development for the first camera and projection equipment were conducted by Engineering Research Associates, Division of Remington Rand, Inc., under the technical supervision of the Geology and Geophysics Branch, Office of the Chief of Army Engineers in Washington, in accordance with plans and specifications furnished by this branch. Subsequent modifications of the camera-lowering device, transporting equipment, and special field tools were made in the Corps of Engineers' Ohio River Division Laboratories in Cincinnati. The background of this development is interesting. Among the more difficult foundation problems involved in construction of concrete dams are those resulting from bedrock imperfections that escape disclosure by conventional exploration methods. Often these imperfections are of sufficient magnitude to introduce costly changes, especially when their presence is discovered only after foundation excavation is well in progress. Bedrock flaws most frequently camouflaged may be ruptures resulting from the enormous stresses to which rocks have been subjected, or they may be planes or zones of weakness related to chemical alteration and underground erosion. Obviously, detailed information on their location, dimensions, and structure is important, as these factors can affect the stability of a dam and the security of life and property downstream. Their discovery and appraisal entail extensive subsurface exploration. At present the most economical exploratory tool available to geologists and engineers is the small-diameter diamond core drill by means of which cores of the foundation bedrock are recovered for examination and testing. All too often, however, these samples fail to disclose minor foundation flaws that may be of major importance before a structure is completed. As a result, the small-diameter drillings are supplemented generally by more reliable but much more costly shafts, tunnels, or large-diameter calyx drill holes that permit the investigator to examine the foundation rocks in place. It was to reduce the number and cost of these expensive and time-consuming investigations, as well as to obtain more complete information on rock structure from the smaller borings, that the NX borehole camera was developed. A progress report is presented on a research program in which an attempt was made to develop a practical sulfide-volatilization process for recovering tin from low-grade Bolivian ores. Shaft-furnace designs and operating techniques were studied in a series of experiments in which the objective was to sulfidize cassiterite to stannous sulfide, remove the stannous sulfide by volatilization, reconvert the stannous sulfide to stannous oxide, and collect the resulting fume. A shaft furnace was developed and operated in a final test in which many of the previous difficulties were surmounted. Since the supporting funds were exhausted at this point, the project was discontinued; recommendations for further improvements in furnace design and operation were made on the basis of interpretation of experimental results obtained in shaft-furnace experiments and other related studies.

"IntroductionONE OF :THE most effective methods by which the construction industry is combatting mounting building costs is by making increased use of lightweight materials, thus reducing the dead load to be carried •by structures. This applies to non-metallic materials as well as to metallic ones, and particular attention has been given to developing lightweight aggregates for use in concrete.The use of lightweight aggregates is not new and, in fact, dates back to the Roman Empire, when pumice was used in the walls and domes of the Roman buildings. More recently, and up to a decade or so ago, the demand for these aggregates was met from deposits of volcanic cinders, pumice, scoria, etc., and from the by-products of blast furnaces and coal burning boilers. However, these sources of supply are no longer sufficient to meet the demand, for transportation costs pretty well restrict the use of the natural lightweight aggregates to the western cordillera regions where the deposits of these materials occur, and the use of expanded slag aggregates to the areas neighbouring the plants where slags are produced. As for cinders, the supply has been greatly reduced by the conversion of industry to fuel oil, natural gas, and powdered coal, and the large stockpiles which existed previously have been pretty well exhausted.Industry's approach to the problem of a decreasing supply, in the face of an increasing demand, has been characteristically direct. The solution has been to construct plants whose sole .purpose is to produce economically an acceptable light-weight aggregate from materials close at hand."

The first metal-mine accident-prevention course was prepared and published in 1942-45 as a series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57). The scope of the course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date, and it is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57, revised) on accident prevention in metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the uses of investigations and reports of all accidents.

ASBESTOS is a name applied to a group of naturally fibrous minerals. As indicated in a later section devoted to a detailed discussion of the early history of asbestos, the tern may be defined as a. fibrous form of serpentine or amphibole. It does not include fibrous forms of other minerals, such as wollastonite, nemalite (fibrous brucite), or the fibrous forms of calcite or gypsum. A material that has the characteristics of silk or cotton and at the same time will not burn is unique. Because it combines these qualities with other advantageous properties, asbestos has specialized uses for which no substitutes are yet available. Asbestos furnishes a major raw material for a great variety of essential products and their manufacture constitutes a vast industry. The United States leads all countries in the manufacture of asbestos products. The value of such commodities manufactured in 1952 exceeded $332 million. They are not only of vast importance to budding construction and industry but axe absolutely, essential to certain important fields of use, for example, steam packings and friction materials, such as brake-band linings on automobiles.

Continuing progress in a petroleum and natural gas research program of world-wide significance makes it difficult to pinpoint accomplishments within definite time limits, and it is helpful to look back as well as forward in attempting to introduce and summarize the petroleum work of the Bureau of Mines in the fiscal year 1953. The 1952 report2 / indicated progress in a long-range program applicable in large part to both defense and peacetime requirements. The present report indicates a continuation of that program, modified partly by new demands and interests of government and industry, and is highlighted by a number of significant contributions to the knowledge of petroleum and natural gas and their production and utilization. The intent of the program was clearly epitomized in a statement made near the end of the fiscal year at a general conference of Bureau of Mines personnel where the record was critically reviewed:

KAISER Bauxite Co., a subsidiary of Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp., has been mining and shipping Jamaican bauxite for over a year. On Feb. 10, 1953 the first boat load of bauxite left Port Kaiser, Jamaica, for the company's alumina plant at Baton Rouge, La. To provide its own source of the aluminum ore, a Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. exploration party started initial reconnaissance in 1947. This work, and subsequent exploration, led to the acquisition of reserves sufficient to warrant a full-scale mining operation for several decades.

SAFETY records have improved in all branches of the mineral industry. While annual production was rising from $2 billion in 1910 to nearly $12 billion in 1950, fatalities decreased from 3539 in 1911 to 974 in 1951. And, although safety progressed under hand methods, it progresses more effectively under modern, mechanized methods. But powered devices such as electric or diesel units can in themselves create new hazards unless proper safeguards are instituted. Health Use of diesels underground is increasing. Diesel equipment has been used in construction of 34 tunnels in 16 states in the last 17 years. The 77 noncoal underground mines in 24 states using diesels underground range from mines with large open stopes to those with narrow veins, so that the ventilating problems represent a good cross-section of U. S. mining. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has received no report that anyone has suffered ill effects from the proper use of properly maintained equipment. The necessity for correct maintenance and use of satisfactory exhaust conditioners cannot be emphasized too strongly.

The record of safety in the use of permissible explosives in United States coal mines has been excellent, due in great measure to the persistence with which research has been carried on in the Bureau of Mines, to the development of permissible explosives, and to the cooperation of mine operators and workers in using permissibles in a recommended manner and in the effective though gradual replacement of black powder and other nonpermissibles. The demand for increased rate of coal production, changes in mining conditions and minim methods, and introduction of new mining machinery have resulted in modified or new blasting practices. To keep abreast of these developments the Bureau of Mines conducts investigations under actual mining conditions at the Experimental coal mine near Pittsburgh, Pa. Several years ago an extensive study was complete to determine conditions under which the allowable charge limit for permissible explosives per shot hole might be raised from 1.5 to 3 pounds without undue risk of gas or coal-dust ignitions. As a result of the study, this increase in the charge limit was authorized under certain specified conditions in 1948,5/ greatly facilitating production schedules.

Applications are described of various methods for determining the weight concentration and physical properties of solid and liquid impurities of gases in connection with problems encountered in synthesis-gas production. Of special interest among these methods may be listed: 1. A method developed for determining, the weight concentration of solid and liquid impurities in. hot, crude synthesis gas containing a high concentration of moisture. 2. A method developed for the same purpose but for highly purified synthesis gas or atmospheric air. 3. A method for obtaining a uniform dispersion of dry duet or, a microscope slide for particle-size determination or other purposes.

General In the present state of knowledge, all duets liberated in mining, tunneling and quarrying operations should be considered potentially injurious to health if breathed in sufficient quantity; dusts containing free silica should be considered specially injurious to health, the injurious particles being below 7 microns in diameter.

This report contains a summary of the various studies made to determine the structural design of the production mine area of the Oil-Shale mine, Rifle, Colo. Prior to this investigation, it had been determined from a study of the geology, the structure of the deposit, and mining costs that the deposit should be mined by open stoping. The problem remained to determine the maximum safe roof span, the optimum extraction ratio, and the size of the pillars. These factors were determined from a study of the geologic structure of the deposit, the physical properties of the oil shale, and the magnitude and distribution of the stress around proposed underground openings. The latter was determined from both theoretical calculations and model studies. Safe roof spans, pillar sizes, pillar contours, and optimum extraction ratios were calculated from elastic theory and the physical properties of the mine rock. Safe roof spans, pillar sizes; and time effects were determined by Wright and Bucky by testing mine models in a centrifuge. The models were made from rock specimens taken from the proposed mine roof and pillars. The results from both studies agreed.

This paper describes the use of the electric-arc furnace for the production of tough-pitch, horizontal cast copper shapes and the production of copper anodes from tank house anode scrap. This installation is the only one of its kind in the United States. SINCE the initial use of electric-arc furnaces for refined copper melting on a commercial scale at Copper Cliff in 1936, this type of melting has been of extreme interest to everyone in any way connected with copper casting and fabricating. Early in 1948, Kennecott Copper Corp. decided to build an electrolytic copper refinery at Garfield, Utah. One of the major decisions to be made at that time was the type of furnace to be used for melting cathodes for casting into refined copper shapes and for melting anode scrap for the production of anodes. Based on the results obtained from arc furnaces by the Tnternational Nickel Co. of Canada, at Copper Cliff, and by the American Smelting and Refining Co., at Baltimore, coupled with certain important economic factors such as having an adequate amount of relatively cheap power available at the Magna Central Power Plant, high cost of poles and oil in the Salt Lake District, and the lack of natural gas at that time, the final decision was to install electric-arc furnaces rather than the standard type of rever-beratory furnaces. Experience has shown certain parts of the original installation to have been inadequate or in need of modification. Although the present status of arc-furnace melting at the Utah Refinery is far from perfect, nevertheless substantial progress has been made. At the Utah refinery, copper is melted in three 15-ft diam, size "M" Lectromelt furnaces, two of which are used for melting cathodes and one for remelting anode scrap. Each furnace is energized from a 13,800-225 v, 3-phase, 60-cycle, 6000-kva (at 40°C rise) oil-immersed water-cooled transformer. Auxiliary equipment for each refined copper furnace includes a charging machine, launders, ladle, 40 ft diam Walker-type casting wheel, bosh, and inspection conveyor. The anode furnace differs in that it is charged by hand from an elevated platform and the anodes are picked off the 24-ft diam casting wheel by a takeoff hoist and loaded directly into specially designed trailers, Figs. 1 and 2. Electrical Equipment Electric power to operate the arc furnaces is generated at the Kennecott-owned Magna Central Power Station two miles distant and transmitted to the Refinery outdoor substation at 44,000 v. At this point it is stepped down to 13,800 v and carried through concrete-lined underground tunnels to the switchgear and then to the primary side of the furnace transformers. The power is conducted from the Y-connected secondary bus bars of the transformer to the electrode arms by means of 22 flexible copper cable conductors per phase. Each cable has a cross-sectional area of 1,750,000 circular mils, giving a total area of 38,500,000 circular mils per phase. The power is carried from these cables to the three individual electrode holders by means of water-cooled copper bus tubing. The electrode clamps are incorporated in the electrode holders and are released by air pressure working against a spring in the clamp control cylinder. This paper is a revision of Information Circular 7380, by D. Harrington and J. H. East, Jr., published in 1946, entitled ?Safe Storage, Handling, and Use of Commercial Explosives in Metal Mines, Nonmetallic Mines, and Quarries.? Issued soon after the close of World War II, this earlier circular described the unprecedented increase in the production and use of commercial explosives during the war as a result of expanded industry and the tremendous demand f or metals and minerals. In the years following World War II, the production and use of commercial explosives in the United States have continued to rise. Hence, the Bureau of Mines presents these revised figures through 1952. In rewriting this Wormation circular, most of the text prepared by Harrington and East has been retained, with newer statistical information compiled by Seth T. Reese, Accident Analysis Branch, and V. E. Wrenn, of the same branch.

Experiments in the bolting of a mine roof were commenced at Elrington Colliery on the South Maitland Coal Field early in 1949, following the appearance of an article in the American publication, "Coal Mine Modernisation Year Book" 1948. Prior to this, although bolting had not been used in the maintenance of satisfactory roof conditions, the principle of roof bolt anchorage had been illustrated in instances such as the hanging of a trolley locomotive power wire using an expanding shell type of bolt anchorage, or the insertion of an eye bolt with a split and wedge, as used to suspend a rope block over a winze being sunk in a metalliferous mine.The experiments at Elrington Colliery were the first efforts in this country to supplement the work of timber supports under a mine roof with systematic placement of roof bolts.Following the series of experiments at Elrington, full scale bolting was commenced at that Colliery in a trackless mobile section in April, 1950.The obvious success of the system at Elrington indicated that it might also be a success in the support of weak roof strata immediately overlying the workable section of the Victoria Tunnel Seam at John Darling Colliery.The system was commenced at John Darling Colliery in April, 1951, in one mechanical section on the Victoria Tunnel Seam, and the scope was gradually widened until by December, 1952, ail'six mechanical units then operating on this seam were working under bolted roofs.

A laboratory mineral-dressing investigation of manganese ore from the Martin mine, Independence County, Ark., succeeded in recovering ferrograde manganese products. Sintered flotation concentrates analyzing 40.7 and 41.4 percent manganese at overall recoveries of 54.6 and 47.7 percent, respectively, were produced from preconcentrated feed, Preconcentration of the ore for flotation included treatment by magnetic separation and by a combination of magnetic separation and heavy-medium processing. The mineral-dressing study of the Martin mine rhodochrosite ore was part of a general program of the Bureau of Mines to develop domestic sources of strategic minerals, including manganese. Several such potential sources of manganese exist in the Batesville, Ark., district, one of which is represented by the Martin mine. Although the Martin mine area has not been delimited with respect to total reserve tonnage, it is considered to be one of the more important occurrences of manganese in the district. It is estimated that several 100,000 tons of manganese carbonate ore are present in this and similar properties.
