In recent years there has been no loss of life from fires in the underground mines of the Lake Superior district, but numerous minor fires and several serious ones involving loss of property and production have occurred. The iron-ore-producing companies recognize that well-equipped mine rescue stations are a valuable asset against the ever-present ranger of mine fires or the possibility of hazardous atmospheric conditions underground. Prompt action by trained and properly equipped rescue teams is recognized as the prime essential in saving lives, property, and production when fires occur. To achieve this purpose, the mining companies have provided themselves with mine rescue equipment and maintain trained mine rescue crews. This circular describes how one progressive company has provided, maintained, and improved upon such protection for its underground iron-ore mines on the Marquette and Menominee iron ranges of Michigan's upper peninsula. SUMMARY The central mine rescue station of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Negaunee, Mich., has provided the company's mines with competent and well-equipped mine rescue teams. The new central mine rescue station at the Mather mine "B" shaft has the distinction of having underground training facilities provided as a part of the station. The company maintains the largest trained force in mine rescue in the Lake Superior district, and mine rescue training is employed as a part of the accident-and fire-prevention program. One of the most important results has been the promotion of closer cooperation and understanding between the management and the workmen. In addition to the service rendered to company mines, the station and its personnel have given assistance to others. The station and its equipment have also been used for training several nearby community volunteer fire departments. This mine rescue station and its personnel have been a dependable and valuable asset to the community in which it is located.

This report covers the calendar year 1953 and has been prepared and submitted in accordance with the provisions of Sec. 106(a) and Sec. 212(c) of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (66 Stat. 692; 30 U.S.C. Secs. 451-483). During this first full calendar year of operations under the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, the coal-mining industry of the United States attained the best injury records in its history - improving the former best records (made in 1952) by 91 fatal and 10,020 nonfatal injuries. Whereas, the mandatory provisions of the act were intended and designed to prevent major mine disasters, apparently the effects have reached beyond the scope thereof in reducing mine accidents generally.

The 1952 Annual Report of the West Virginia Department of Mines lists seven beds that are being mined in Mingo County, of which the Cedar Grove is the most important. The Cedar Grove, Alma, and Coalburg contain the largest remaining known reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 3,007 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 2,396 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

The design and operation of the Koppers powdered-coal gasifier and its auxiliaries at Louisiana, Mo., are described. This unit was designed to convert 1 ton of coal per hour with oxygen and superheated steam into synthesis gas - primarily carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The first run was made on May 4, 1949. After this, 44 short runs (less than 8 hours each) and 1 long run (lasting 11 days) were made. Total gasification time was 420 hours. The gasifier was not cooled down during the year when these runs were made. After an initial period of test operations and equipment proving, during which 12 runs were made, the effect of numerous variables on gasifier performance was studied. The long run was made primarily to check the equipment in sustained operation. Detailed data from these runs are presented.

"IntroductionTHE PROPERTY of Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines. Limited. comprises fifty-eight claims located between Russet and Faulkenham lakes in Baird and Heyson townships of the Patricia portion of the District of Kenora. The mine is seven miles •by road from the hamlet of Red Lake. This latter centre is .connected to the Trans-Canada Highway at Vermillion Bay, Ontario, by provincial highway No. 105 which has a total length of one hundred and thirteen miles.The Madsen property went into production on August 11th, 1938, with a milling plant rated at 300 tons per twenty-four hours. Changes made in the crushing plant during October, 1938, allowed a •finer feed to be delivered to the mill and increased the milling •capacity to 400 tons per twenty-four hours. During 1948, steps were taken to add an additional 400-ton capacity unit to the milling plant. This latter work was completed by May, 1949, giving the present total milling .capacity of 800 tons per twenty-four hours.It was realized in the early 1940's that, eventually, considerable material suitable for backfilling in the mine would be required. As there were no large deposits of gravel or sand anywhere near the mine, officials of the Company considered it advisable to investigate the feasibility of using mill tailings for mine •backfill. Since Madsen mill tailings contain approximately 80 per •cent of minus-200-mesh material, it was not considered practical to use them for underground backfill without first removing the finer material. as the slimes present in a product of this fineness would without doubt preclude any drainage whatsoever. Table I gives a sizing analysis of Madsen mill tailings and Table II a quantitative chemical analysis of the ore."

This publication is a revision of the first of a series of four Miners' Circulars originally prepared and issued in 19'29 for use in a course of training designed to prepare mine officials to organize men for rescue and recovery operations. These circulars were revised in 1937 and 1938 and again in 1948. This circular (Miners' Circular 33) discusses mine gases and methods for detecting them. The second of this series (Miners' Circular 34) gives instruction in Bureau of Mines methods of sampling and analysis of mine gases; the third (Miners' Circular 35) describes methods and equipment used for protection against mine gases; and the fourth (Miners' Circular 36) explains procedures used in sealing and unsealing mine fires and in recovery operations after mine fires or mine explosions.

The Black Hills Mineral Atlas briefly summarizes all pertinent date available on the mines and mineral deposits in the Black Hills that have been explored, developed, mined, or located. The purpose of the atlas is threefold: First, from available date the general potentialities of the Black Hills region can be determined, although it is not possible to calculate actual ore reserves; second, it will provide the necessary basic information regarding a given property or commodity for further detailed study; and third, the compilation is a comprehensive directory of Black Hills deposits.

[The Cartersville mining district is in Bartow County, Ga., about 40 miles northwest of Atlanta. Barite, limonite, ocher, amber, hematite, and, manganese oxide ores have been produced from the strict since about 1840. In the search for a possible source of manganese ore, Bureau of Mines engineers made a preliminary study of the district from September 1950 to January 1951. During this study 139 deposits were examined, and many mineral exposures were sampled. Manganese mineralization occurs as fine oxide and concretionary pellets in residual clays, as fine oxides in umberous clay, in brown-iron deposits, and in a limited quantity in mud ponds and Jig-tailing piles. The future supply of ferrograde manganese ore from the district, using current mining and benefication methods, appears limited to the recovery of the hard manganese ores deposits. Rough estimates indicate a reserve of manganese-bearing clays of about 8,000,000 long tons. This type of deposit has been extensively exploited and the larger deposits mined out to depths of from 50 to 200 feet. The remainder of these deposits are low grade, are covered with deep layers of colluvium, or lie below the ground-water table. Any future production from this source will require systematic prospecting, improved concentration, and an increase in the price of concentrate.]

A review of development and a reevaluation of uses of the hydraulic air compressor are suggested by the constant changes in technology, which frequently make an old art valuable in solving current problems. Contacts with research workers in various branches of engineering indicate that this older method of producing compressed air may not be familiar to some or that its salient features might be useful in solving problems involving uses of compressed air. Briefly, a hydraulic air compressor may be described as an inverted siphon, consisting of an intake head where water and air are mingled, followed by a gravity-fall tube in which air is intimately mixed with the water and is compressed as the water pressure increases during the fall down the tube, then a separating, or stilling, chamber in which air bubbles rise to the surface of the water and collect in the upper portion of the chamber at a pressure equal to the weterhead maintained by the height of water in the discharge leg of the circuit. The water, which now contains only the fraction of air that has gone into solution, passes out of the separating chamber and rises up the discharge leg to the surface, which is, of course, at some suitable distance below the level of the intake. Present-day applications include (1) utilizing low hydraulic heads, which otherwise have little commercial values; (2) utilizing low hydraulic heads in reclamation work to supply compressed air, or in some instances to produce a small suction, for air-lift pumping (or for operation of air motors), with minimum attendance and without need for electric power; (3) utilizing medium heads, as at dam and lock installations, to produce compressed air for pneumatic operation of airlifts, gates, valves, and rubber gate seals; (4) utilizing underground waters, as in mines, to produce compressed air for general mine use; (5) using this method of isothermal compression of air in combination with standard compressors wherever hydraulic head is available, thereby securing the advantages of low-temperature intake to the mechanical compressors and reduction of moisture content below that of atmospheric air; (6) development of large air supply at pressures up to 150 p.s.i.g., which, after performing work in reciprocating or centrifugal expansion cylinders, is available at temperatures approximating -50° F. Possibilities in freezing and reheating should be mentioned which may prove economical for obtaining uniformly dry air for process work, wind-tunnel tests, or large air-conditioning installations, such as ventilation of underwater traffic tunnels, and may be economic for supply of supercharged air to gas-turbine plants.

SPONGE IRON has been defined as the metallic product formed by the reduction (removal of combined oxygen) of iron ore or other iron oxides at temperatures below the fusion point of iron. This product probably derived the name "sponge iron" from its porous nature. When the reduction proceeds at slightly higher temperatures and the particles of metal weld together or finally even melt to yield pellets or balls that lack the porosity and low-density characteristic of sponge iron, the product might more correctly be called "direct iron."

It becomes my pleasant duty to call the meeting to order. This is our fiftieth regular meeting. And the session we are opening today, I am sure: will be as interesting and informative as those in the past. These gatherings present a fruitful opportunity for an exchange of experiences and ideas that will aid all of us in our work in the various segments within the coal industry. Walter Johnson and his Program Committee have arranged a wonderful program for us; Walter, due to his standing in the industry and his large acquaintanceship with the leaders of the industry, has really gone to town in bringing outstanding speakers and personalities to deliberate with us in our proceedings. A lot of things have happened since we last met; in the operating end, and in safety we have made marvellous headway, but we have slipped badly in the marketing end. However, I am sure the messages and discussion you will hear will point out ways and means of overcoming at least some of our difficulties. Before we get on with the program, I want to thank our hard working Secretary, Fred Whiteside, who, by the way, is a charter member of the Institute and has attended every one of the fifty meetings we have held; and the various committees who have been meeting for the past several months and who have arranged this fine program you are to hear. I hope all of you enjoy the convention; the business as well as the social sessions.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThe Brewer mine, near Jefferson, Chesterfield County, S.C., was originally operated as a gold mines as late as 1890 this mine was reported to have been one of the large gold producers in the southeast,Occurrence of topaz on the Brewer property was not reported until 1935, when it was discovered by Pardee and Parks. 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey while they were investigating gold deposits in the Piedmont province.During the 1940's the Chemical Engineering Branch of the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Electrotecbnical Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines at Norris, Tenn., investigated topaz from the Brewer mine to determine the possibilities of its use as mullite and for the production of calcium fluoride.From July 1950 through. April 1951 the Bureau of Mines conducted a diamond-drilling project at the Brewer mine to determine the grade and extent of the topaz deposits. Ten diamond-drill holes, totaling 2,344 feet, were completed, and 231 analyses of core samples were made during the course of the project.This report presents factual data relating only to the diamond-drilling project, The placer deposits on the Brewer property were previously investigated by the Federal Geological Survey 4/."

"CONCLUSIONSThe investigation shows that there are 5 coal beds of major importance in Wyoming County from the standpoint of present production - Pocahontas No. 3, No. 2 Gas, Sewell, Beckley, and Eagle - and 5 beds of minor importance - Pocahontas No. 6, Cedar Grove, Winifrede, Douglas, and Chilton. The Pocahontas No. 3 bed contains the largest remaining known reserves.Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thick¬ness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 2,665 million short tons as of January 1, 1951. Of this total, 2,121 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.Recoverable reserves of coal have been estimated in beds 28 inches and more thick. This thickness is about the minimum now being mined by hand loading onto conveyors in the Appalachian region. The weighted average recovery for all beds in Wyoming County, as determined by this investigation, is 55.0 percent. This percent¬age is based on the total thickness of coal (less partings 3/8 inch or more thick) in the bed rather than on the thickness of the coal mined. The known recoverable reserves are estimated to be 1,167 million tons as of January 1, 1951.4. Since most of the Wyoming coals are medium- and low-volatile bituminous in rank and expand during carbonization in modern ovens, they are blended with high-volatile contracting coals."

DURING the past several years of diamond drilling in Washington County, Mo., the St. Joseph Lead Co. has discovered a concentration of commercial lead-zinc ore at four different points within an area of 36 square miles. The largest and to date the most promising group of these orebodies is located in the Indian Creek area. It was considered to be of sufficient value to warrant development.

THE only asbestos mine in the Middle East is on the Island of Cyprus, high in the Trodos Mountain village of Amiandos. The mine is owned by the Tunnel Asbestos Cement Co. Annual output is some 18.000 tons of short fibre in the 4-T. 4-Z, and 5-R grades.

Expect Labrador Iron Ore Shipments by 1954 Iron ore shipments from the Quebec-Labrador area are a "definite expectation" by late summer, 1954, according to William H. Durrell, general manager of the Iron Ore Company of Canada. About $120 million have been invested in the project, with a total of $200 million expected to be reached before a ton of ore is shipped, Mr. Durrell said. According to the general manager approximately 418 million tons of open pit highgrade ore have been proven in the project. Deposits lie several hundred miles north of the mouth of the St. Lawrence River in territory which was without transportation of any kind. Construction of a railroad from Seven Islands to Knob Lake, about 360 miles, is an important part of the development plan. The railroad will be the first to adopt complete roller bearing applications. Construction is on schedule with 215 miles of the route graded. Completion involves two tunnels through rock, one of almost half mile length, a 700-ft bridge and several smaller spans.

CHUQUICAMATA, located in northern Chile in the Province of Antofagasta, is on the western slope of the Andes at an elevation of 9500 ft. Because of its position on the eastern edge of the Atacama Desert, the climate is extremely arid with practically no precipitation, either rain or snow. All primary blasting in the open-pit mine at Chuquicamata is done by the churn drill, blasthole method. Since 1915, when the first tonnages of importance were removed from the open pit, there have been many changes in the blasting practice, but no clear-cut rules of method and procedure have been devised for application to the mine as a whole. One general fact stands out: both the ore and waste rock at Chuquicamata are difficult to break satisfactorily for the most efficient operation of power shovels. Numerous experiments have been made in an effort to improve the breakage and thereby increase the shovel efficiency. Holes of different diameter have been drilled, the length of toe and spacing of holes have been varied, and several types of explosives have been used. Early blasting was done by the tunnel method. The banks were high, generally 30 m, requiring the use of large charges of black powder, detonated by electric blasting caps. Large tonnages were broken at comparatively low cost, but the method left such a large proportion of oversize material for secondary blasting that satisfactory shovel operation was practically impossible. Railroad-type steam and electric shovels then in service proved unequal to the task of efficiently handling the large proportion of oversize material produced. The clean-up of high banks proved to be dangerous and expensive as large quantities of explosive were consumed in dressing these banks, and from time to time the shovels were damaged by rock slides. As early as 1923 the high benches were divided, and a standard height of 12 m was selected for the development of new benches. The recently acquired Bucyrus-Erie 550-B shovel, with its greater radius of operation compared to the Bucyrus-Erie 320-B formerly used for bench development, allowed the bench height to be increased to 16 m. Churn drill, blasthole shooting proved to be successful, and tunnel blasts were limited to certain locations where development existed or natural ground conditions made the method more attractive than the use of churn drill holes. Liquid oxygen explosive and black powder were used along with dynamite of various grades in blast-hole loading up to early 1937. Liquid oxygen and black powder were discontinued because they were more difficult to handle due to their sensitivity to fire or sparks in the extremely dry climate. At present ammonium nitrate dynamite is favored because of its superior handling qualities and its adaptability to the dry condition found in 90 pct of the mine. In wet holes, which are found only in the lowest bench of the pit and account for the remaining 10 pct of the ground to be broken, Nitramon in 8x24-in. cans, or ammonium nitrate dynamite packed in 8x24-in. paper cartridges, is being used. This latter explosive, which is protected by a special antiwetting agent that makes the cartridges resistant to water for about 24 hr, currently is considered the best available for the work and is preferred over Nitramon. Early churn drill hole shots detonated by electric blasting caps, one in each hole, gave trouble because of misfires caused by the improper balance of resistance in the electrical circuits. Primarily, it was of vital importance to effect an absolute balance of resistance in these circuits, the undertaking and completion of which invariably caused delays in the shooting schedule. Misfires resulting from the improper balance of electrical circuits, or from any other cause, were extremely hazardous, since holes had to be unloaded or fired by the insertion of another detonator. The advent of cordeau, later followed by primacord, corrected this particular difficulty and therefore reduced the possibility of missed holes. After much experimentation, the blasting practice evolved into single row, multihole shots, with the holes spaced 4.5 to 5 m center to center in a row 7.5 to 8 m back from the toe. Sucti shots were fired from either end by electric blasting caps attached to the main trunk lines of cordeau or primacord. The detonating speed of cordeau or primacord gave the practical effect of firing all holes instantaneously. Double row and multirow blasts, fired instantaneously with cordeau or primacord, proved to be unsatisfactory in the type of rock found at Chuquica-

FLANKING the Valley of Mexico on the northeast is a mountain range known as the Sierra de Pachuca. This northwesterly-trending range is about 30 miles long and 5 miles wide, its summit attaining an elevation of more than 10,000 feet above sea level, or 2000 feet above the valley floor. Pachuca, a town of 50,000 inhabitants, lies nestled at the southwest base of the range, 60 miles northeast of Mexico City. Three miles to the east, just over the summit and on the northeasterly slope, is the mountain town of Real del Monte with a population of about 20,000. These are the two principal towns in a 40-sq mile area whose yield has brought the district to its high rank among the world's silver producers. Total production probably exceeds 1.25 billion ounces of silver and 4.5 million ounces of gold. Exploitation by the Spanish was under way by 1530. As the mines were deepened operations became handicapped by the inadequate method of handling water with horse whims and bull skins. To offset this disadvantage a two-mile drainage tunnel was started in 1749 and completed ten years later. John Taylor of London acquired the mines from the third Count of Regla in 1824 and formed the Compania de Real del Monte y Pachuca. Two years later Cornish pumps were brought from England. A Mexican company purchased the British interest in 1848 and within a few years resumed an old project of driving a second, lower three-mile drainage tunnel, completing it in 1857. After Americzn interests acquired control of the property in 1906 operations expanded to an unprecedented scale, despite periods of political strife, unstable prices, labor problems, and a growing burden of taxation. An idea of the scale of operations may be gained from records of the last two decades prior to 1947, the last year for which production information is at hand, during which time production ranged from 1.4 million to 1.1 million tons per year, and the combined development and exploration, exclusive of diamond drilling, amounted to about 18 miles annually. Pachuca differs from Zacatecas and some other Mexican silver vein districts that flourished and de- clined in earlier centuries in that a substantial part of its total production was made after 1900. While the district's accelerated activity in this century was largely due to the successful application of the cyanide process to the treatment of the ores, improved pumping methods, and new mechanical equipment, it was at the same time stimulated by the opening up of important new orebodies as a result of active and extensive exploration of the vein system. Some of these orebodies were found on veins which terminate upward far below the surface, and though these particular veins do not crop out, they show relationship with a type of alteration which may be their surface expression. The district has been studied by many able geologists, and a large store of information has been accumulated, much of which is recorded in published as well as private papers. Wall Rocks Extrusive Rocks: The Sierra de Pachuca is a thick accumulation of Tertiary eruptive rocks consisting mainly of flows, breccias, and tuffs. Numerous recognizable volcanic vents within the range itself manifest that the range was built up by material ejected from these vents. The maximum thickness of the volcanic pile is not known, but from deep exploration and from relationship with Mesozoic sediments to the north and east it is inferred that the average thickness in the main part of the district may be at least 6000 ft. The extrusive rocks comprise four general types, which in ascending order of age are: andesite, rhyolite, dacite, and basalt. The veins are confined largely to the andesite, the dominant rock of the region. STUDY of the thermal-solution process was begun by treating crushed oil shale in a small autoclave at temperatures of 700° to 950° F. The effect of temperature, reaction time, type of solvent, and richness of shale upon the amount of organic matter that was removed from the oil shale was thus determined. Following this orientation work a semicontinuous, bench-scale apparatus was built so that heated solvent could be pumped through a bed of shale under elevated pressure, thus removing the converted organic matter from the spent shale. After some operating experience had been gained, a continuous unit was constructed. This permitted treating a slurry of shale oil and pulverized oil shale at about 300 p. s. i. and temperatures of 750° to 850° F. for various retention times. Considerable cracking and polymerization of the shale oil were found to take place during the process. In an attempt to prevent this, a study was made of extraction of the shale in batch-type autoclaves under high partial pressures of hydrogen at total gas pressures of as much as 4,300 p. s. i. at 850° F. The thermal-solution process was found to convert over 90 percent of the organic matter in oil shale to oil and gas. The highest yields of gas and oil obtained without hydrogen pressure were equivalent to 119 weight-percent of those obtained from the same shale by Fischer assay. With a high partial pressure of hydrogen, yields equivalent to 126 weight-percent of Fischer assay were obtained. However, the oil produced by thermal solution has a higher boiling range than that obtained by other retorting methods, particularly so if the thermal-solution process is used without a high partial pressure of hydrogen. Nondistillable oil (all benzene-soluble material that would not distill under 2 mm. Hg absolute pressure without cracking) equivalent to over 100 percent of the organic matter in the shale was obtained without hydrogen pressure in the system. When the process was carried out under hydrogen pressure, the yield of nondistillable oil amounted to 60 to 70 weight-percent of the organic matter. Part of this heavy material is formed partly by polymerization and condensation of the shale-oil solvent used. These reactions, as well as cracking of the solvent to form gas and a carbonaceous deposit on the shale, are unfavorable features of the process.
