In mining coal, the Nation's principal mineral fuel, loss of life has been much lower recently than in earlier years when coal mining contributed so heavily to the industrial-accident death toll in the United States. Particularly notable has been the relatively small number of deaths during the past few years compared with the number that occurred 20 or 30 years ago. Reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, covering all commercially operated mines that were active during all or any part of the calendar year 1935, showed that accidents during that year had resulted in the loss of 1,242 lives. This death toll, although regrettable, represents a material improvement over the industry's experience during most years prior to 1935, and especially over the industry's worst year, 1907, when 3,242 men were killed. Fewer lives were lost in 1933, when 1,064 men were killed at work, than during any year for which complete figures are available.

From the standpoint of tonnage and dollar value copper is the most important nonferrous metal mined in North America. The opening of copper mines has had an important bearing on the development and settlement of many sections of the continent. The prosperity of many of the mining States or provinces depends directly upon the copper-mining industry. Normally, about 35,000 men are employed in the copper mines, mills, and smelters of the United States. The United States is the most important producer of copper among the nations; more copper is mined in North America than in any other continent, and for many years the United States alone produced about half of the copper of the world. During the last 10 years increasing production in South America and Africa has reduced the relative importance of North America and the United States.

This paper briefly describes the principal known commercial and near commercial deposits of gold-bearing gravel end the principal placer mining operations of Idaho County, Idaho. It is one of a series of similar papers on western mining districts. The data used in writing this paper were gathered during the summer of 1937. Information concerning gold-bearing gravels was obtained from prospectors and operators, while operators supplied most of the data on mining operations. No attempt was made actually to test the gravels. The principal object of the examination was to indicate placer areas worthy of further investigation by prospective operators.

[During the past year the Metallurgical Fundamentals Section gave about an equal amount of time to the experimental determination of fundamental thermodynamic constants and to the demonstration of the application of such data to more directly practical metallurgical problems. The first division of the work - the actual experimental measurements of typical thermodynamic constants - was carried out an two problems, termed ?continuing? programs, namely, (1) measurements of Specific Heats at Low Temperatures and (2) Measurements of Heats of Formation and Free Energies. Specific substances chosen for investigation are classified as (n) those that have been the subject of requests for information from the industry and that, upon examination, seem of sufficient practical importance to justify study, and (b) compounds that are difficult to treat metallurgically, or whose specific thermodynamic properties have not yet been determined satisfactorily and for which accurate data might suggest improved or new methods of Metallurgical treatment, or (c) materials recognized as belonging to a social class with exceptional thermodynamic properties and, hence, of scientific as well as technical importance.]

FOR many years the Homestake Mining Co. has devoted serious attention to the elimination of accidents, and ground is steadily being gained in this direction. In accident prevention work it is line-plunging with perfect teamwork and not the spectacular forward pass that brings progress toward the goal. In both surface plants and under- ground workings we regard "good housekeeping" as a first requisite for safety as well as efficiency. Under this term are included all types of safety guards and protective devices as well as cleanliness and orderliness it working places. Perhaps the most important factor in safety work is to arouse and maintain employee interest. The general morale and contentment of employees is of particular importance.

DURING the past few years a marked refinement has taken place in the design of electric power shovels for the mining industry, increasing their digging ability and speed of operation without adding to their total weight. The increase in pay load has been accomplished by a more rigid engineering analysis of shovel design, involving the adoption of new special alloy steels, new sections, and new welding methods. Emphasis has been placed on lightness with increased strength, which is most clearly shown in the front-end equipment where dipper, handle and boom are new in design, material, and construction.

AN increase of 18 per cent in the production and consumption of all metals last year was readily met by the mines, but more than an average amount of development work was made necessary. Mining methods were improved appreciably; open-pit operations ad¬vanced more than underground practice: and the transportation phase of mining progressed to a greater extent than the other related functions. A new belt-conveyor system of mining was placed in operation at the Spruce open-pit iron ore mine at Eveleth, Minn. The gathering portion of the belt system was installed beneath the surface of the open pit, following closely the bottom rock, in especially provided drifts; beyond it inclined upward to the surface and finally discharged into a 500-ton shipping pocket. Length of the belt was 4500 ft. net vertical lift 386 ft. and capacity 750 long tons per hour. The mined ore found its way to the belt through one of three vertical raises, whose horizontal section was 10 by 10 ft. Each raise was equipped with a grizzly, crusher, pan-type feeder, and auxiliary equipment. Transportation of the ore from the working faces of the pit was accomplished as follows: (1) Two raises were equipped with tower and anchor stations, 3-cu.yd. drag scrapers, and related power units; (2) the remaining raise was provided with electrically driven power shovels and 20-ton trucks mounted on pneumatic tires. DELICATE PLANTS are now put to bed for the winter under glass-wool or rock-wool blankets. Thus arise new and unexpected uses for non-metallic materials and rocks and, at the same time, certain unique uses are fading out; for instance, the Italians have taken steps to bar the use of salt for money in Ethiopia. Novel sources of supply find a place in the record of recent achievements as exemplified in the migration of the frontiers of industrial mineral exploitation beyond the land area of the earth to include the ocean. Salt, of course, has been recovered from the sea for years but the treatment of enormous quantities of sea water for bromine has lately added to the importance of the ocean as a reservoir of mineral wealth. Increased use of non-metallic minerals in the commercial and economic life of the country is reflected in the wide scope and activity of the Industrial Minerals Division of the Institute. The outstanding recent achievement of the Division is the publication of a 955-page volume on industrial minerals and rocks, comprising 48 commodity chapters each written by an authority on the subject.

PARTICULAR interest in the ventilation of deep mines, especially those in South Africa, has been created by a very complete system of cooling of the world's deepest mine, the Turf shaft of the Robinson Deep in Johannesburg. The writer visited this mine in January, 1936, and again in 1937. During these visits and subsequently, a considerable part of the theory involved in rock cooling in tunnels was developed and this has been checked by practical observations of the rates of rock cooling made within mines. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the method of attack of the mine problem. The cooling or air conditioning of mines by the use of mechanical refrigeration was not wholly new 1-5 when the Robinson Deep installation was made. The first mine to be cooled was the Morro Velho mine, in Brazil. The first installation in this mine was put into operation in December 1920, the refrigerant being ammonia.5 The surface cooling gave considerable benefit but it proved inadequate as greater depths were reached, therefore in 1929 two centrifugal refrigerating machines were installed at the 6000-ft. level. These were used in conjunction with the surface cooling system to furnish additional cooling at the lower levels. This later installation used Carrene as a refrigerant. This nonflammable refrigerant, having a boiling point of 104º at sea level, insured reasonable safety, since all parts of the machine operated at subatmospheric pressure. Very favorable reports have been received on the effectiveness of this installation, but no recent data are available. An interesting feature of that plant is that the condenser water is cooled by spraying it into the exhaust air from the mine at the base of the ventilation upcast, which permits the water to be cooled within a few degrees of the wet-bulb temperature of the air entering the upcast, and the only water that has to be supplied for condensing purposes is that lost by evaporation, or about 0.5 per cent of the volume circulating through the condenser. This plan affords an ideal means for the removal of the heat load from the refrigerating system, and of course also from the mine itself. In this period of generally increasing taxes of various kinds, one hears less complaint by mining companies about the high cost of workmen's accident compensation than was the case a few years ago, the reason perhaps being that other and more pressing phases of the tax problem now over shadow the heavy expenditures for compensation premiums which a few years ago were considered a severe burden on the mining industry. Nevertheless, the financial expenditures of the mining industry in higher compensation benefits and hospitalization or in higher premium rates, or both, instead of being less have actually increased in many States in the past year. In the spring of 1937, proposals for increased benefits to injured employees in compensation, hospitalization, or medical aid were actively before legislatures in California, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and possibly other States. In some cases, the proposed increases in benefits were so much greater than expenditures for similar items in the past that premium rates per $100 of payroll would almost certainly rise sharply. At this same time, occupational-disease-compensation coverage also was under consideration by legislatures in Arkansas, California, Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, and Washington. Sooner or later (and probably within the next few years) occupational-disease compensation will be accorded practically as wide recognition as accident compensation receives at present, and, unquestionably, mining in all of its branches will be affected more or less drastically. Hence, the present outlook is that the mining industry, in company with practically all other industrial activities, will be confronted by materially higher compensation costs than those of the past or the present, to which rather violent exception has been taken, at least in some States and at some times.

Hazards in connection with the use of compressed-air jets for ventilating gassy mines are given little consideration by most mine officials largely because compressed air is considered the safest means of transmitting power for operating various types of mining machinery, and the inherent dangers in its use for this purpose are virtually negligible . The installation of compressed-air lines in coal mines leads to the utilization of compressed air for ventilating working places , with the result that , although the primary ventilation systems may be adequate to meet existing needs , proper conduction of normal ventilation has been neglected , so the working faces receive only a small amount ofthe total air circulated through the mine . Reliance in part on compressed air or other auxiliary means for ventilation is always attended by danger that gas will accumulate , due to intermittent operation , and the tendency is to operate auxiliary schemes only. during the working shift ( or possibly only part of the shift ) and to dispense with them during off- shifts or at times during the working shift when gas may accumulate because of lack of ventilation . When the men come on shift the auxiliary ventilating device often may be started without a preliminary examination of the working place , or .. the examination may be made sometime before the oncoming shift arrives , the gas being allowed to accumulate in the meantime. This may result in uncontrolled movement of a body of gas if proper precautions are not taken . Several mine explosions have been caused by the movement of a known body of gas by compressed air into the haulageway, where it was ignited by an arc from a passing locomotive . This danger is more pronounced where supervision is lax .

This paper constitutes the third progress report on a national survey of the use of detachable bits in metal mines. It presents comparative costs of drilling with conventional and detachable bits and describes the operating practice in rock drilling and the reconditioning of drill steel and bits at 10 mines not discussed in previous reports.3/ ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This report has been prepared with the assistance and cooperation of the officials and staff members at the mines visited. Costs and other data at individual mines were developed and furnished by the operators.

The Bureau of Mines is operated to assist in promoting economic development through increased efficiency in the mining, preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to aid in conserving mineral resources through preventing waste; and to help the mining industry improve health conditions and increase safety. Accomplishment of those ends is sought through investigation of scientific, technologic, and economic problems of the, mineral industries and dissemination of resulting information. Building materials of mineral origin constitute an important product of mining, and the Bureau makes studies of these in the various fields mentioned. The following commodities come within this classification: Asbestos, anhydrite, asphalt, cement, clay and clay products, diatomite, dolomite, glass and mineral wool, granite, greenstone, gypsum, lightweight building materials, lime, limestone, magnesite, marble, sand, sand and gravel, sandstone, sand-lime brick, slate, soapstone, and trap rock.

The Carson Hill mine of the Carson Hill Gold Mining Corporation is at Melones, Calaveras County, Calif. It is one of the numerous mines on the Mother Lode of California. The property extends for 8,400 feet along the outcrop of that important vein system. The elevation at the haulage level is about 1,000 feet above sea level. The Bureau of Mines receives frequent requests for information on the treatment of mercury ores, but as its own and almost all other publications on mercury are out of print, the Bureau has prepared this circular on the metal for the prospector and operator of small mines and plants. Mercury, commonly though improperly termed ?quicksilver?, is the only common metal that is liquid at ordinary temperatures. Mercury is used in the amalgamation of gold and silver, in power boilers, explosives, friction-less bearings, laboratory apparatus, lamps, medicine, paint, rectifiers, and for ?silvering.? The last mentioned is being superseded by silvering with silver. The use of mercury boilers may increase when they are thoroughly understood, but amalgamation is -being replaced to some extent by the use of corduroy and other collecting mediums, such as jigs and flotation cells.

Advocates of health and safety in mining have found themselves confronted in recent years with what might appear to be contradictory procedures with regard to dust occurrence in mines and what appear to be suitable methods or measures to give the mines and mine workers a maximum measure of protection against dust. A concerted and relatively effective drive has been made to introduce rock dust into bituminous and lignitic coal mines to prevent or limit explosion and fire disasters, while an equally determined effort has been and is now being made to curb rock dust or to eliminate it from air in metal mines to prevent or at least limit the occurrence of miners' consumption and other diseases. Both procedures are logical even though the efforts appear to be of an opposing nature. While rock dusting has not been applied in coal mines nearly as universally or as effectively as could and should be done, nevertheless a careful analysis of the record of the past 10 years indicates that the amount of rock dusting that has been done has resulted in the saving of a minimum? of 200 lives annually certainly no small achievement. Largely but by no means wholly due to the use of rock dusting, the number of fatalities from explosions and fires in our coal mines in the last 4 years haw been reduced more than 75 percent as compared with the 4-year period 1911-15, the first years of the existence of the United States Bureau of Mines, which was brought into existence in 1910 largely to try to do something about reducing the disgracefully high fatality occurrence from explosion disasters in our coal mines. Hence, rock dusting has been given at least a. trial and has proved its effectiveness definitely.
