SOMEWHAT biased by pride in twentieth century achievements, most of us mining engineers and diamond-drill operators look upon core drilling as a relatively modern practice. The invention of the diamond drill is generally ascribed to Rudolf Leschot, who made use of diamonds in 1846 in drilling blast holes in the Mont Cenis tunnel in Switzerland. In vain we search Agricola and other early writers on mining for signs of diamond drilling. We have, therefore, concluded that it was unknown until the middle of the last century. The trouble with this conclusion, as most prospectors will tell us, is that we "don't dig deep enough"; for it now appears that the archeologists have been putting one over on us for the last fifty years.

UNUSUAL interest has recently centered in the Mojave mining district of California, owing to new discoveries of gold ore at the Silver Queen mine, and subsequently at other neighboring proper- ties. These finds have proved that opportunities exist for the prospector even in old mining districts, where careful search may still be rewarded. The Mojave district is characterized by a group of small hills centering around Soledad Butte, four to six miles southwest of Mojave, in Kern County. This butte is 1250 ft. higher than the surrounding desert and 4000 ft. above sea level. Four miles west of Soledad Mountain are the so-called Middle Buttes, a group of flat-topped hills. CALIFORNIA possesses such an abundance of ceramic materials other than clays, that she is quite independent of other states and foreign countries so far as these materials are concerned. Certain users import some feldspar, silica, and allied minerals, but they do so from choice and not necessity. Production is largely for home consumption, so the total volume of ceramic materials produced is comparatively small. Many small deposits of the materials here under discussion are worked by individuals, and their output sold to individual grinding companies or users. The data given here shall be confined to the larger deposits and developments because they give a truer picture of typical deposits, operations, and materials.

FOR many years the developers or owners of worthy mining ventures in need of financing have found it almost impossible to obtain such financing under the conditions existing in most other lines of business. High rates of interest and unfair participation in profits have robbed the developers of much of their holdings, and have resulted in over-capitalization and many other like evils. When the general financial condition of the country is bad, this difficulty increases to a point where many operations must cease and hen are thrown out of employment. In 1.934 this situation had developed to such a point that Congress attempted to aid the mining industry. It first authorized the RFC to make loans to recognized and established corporations, individuals, and partnerships engaged in the business of mining, milling, or smelting of ores in June, 1934, limiting such authority to loans adequately secured, the security to consist of mineral acreage. The requirements of the law were stringent and of the 252 requests for loans received up to June 1, 1935, 35 were authorized.

THE Rio de Canada Honda placer property is situated at an altitude of 5500 ft. above sea level in the San Luis Mountains of the Province of San Luis, Argentina. The mine is reached by 70 km. of fair truck road, from the nearest railway station on the Ferrocarril Buenos Aires al Pacifico. The Pan-American airport at Villa Mercedes, 1.40 km. distant, serves as the most convenient point for shipment of gold. Placer mining in the Rio de Canada Honda dates from the time of the Incas and the present native population depends on the gold washed from this river and the adjacent arroyos as a means of livelihood as did the many generations before them. They dig pits to bedrock where they are not driven out by water, and mine the bedrock gravel by means of tunnels and caves. No timber is available and the ground is supported by rock cribs carefully built with the boulders encountered; or with angular blocks of slate rock taken from quarries on the surface.

SILICOSIS has been described in a report of the American Public Health Association as a disease due to breathing air containing silica, characterized anatomically by generalized fibrotic changes and the development of miliary nodulations in both lungs, and clinically by shortness of breath, decreased chest expansion, lessened capacity for work, absence of fever, increased susceptibility to tuberculosis (some or all of which symptoms may be present), and by characteristic X-ray findings. ... The disease is divided arbitrarily into first, second, and third stages for convenience of description and possible compensation purposes. At least two distinct types of silicosis are recognized, acute and chronic. The acute form was reported as early as 1713, when a British patent for grinding flint by wet methods was granted because the dry powdered material "proved very destructive to mankind, so much that any person, ever so healthful, working in that business cannot possibly survive over two years."

A PAPER recently presented before the Anthracite Section of the A. I. M. E. by S. J. Phil- lips, Mine Inspector, Fifth Anthracite District, Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, covering the water hazards in the anthracite coal mines of the Lackawanna River Valley, was especially timely because the conditions there are duplicated to a large extent in the Wyoming Valley, which is traversed by the Susquehanna River with its many large tributary streams. Also, in the southern anthracite field, where there are a number of large creeks, similar pumping problems and mine water hazards will in time be presented if mining is continued to its conclusion.

Through the courtesy of the State Department, the Bureau of Mines has received a compreensive report on the jede industry of Burma, pre- pared by American Consul Winfield H. Scott, Rangoon, Burza. This mater- ial is the main basis for the present circular, although free use also has been made of reports on the jede industry in China and Germany by consular officers in those countries, to whom footnote credit is given. The word "jade" is said to be derived from the Spanish "piedra de ijada" (hijada) meaning, literally, "stone of the side," as jade was supposed to cure pains in the side; nephrite (a jade mineral) was named from the Greek word meaning kidney, because it was formerly warn as a re- medy for kidney diseases. To the Burmeso, jade is known as "Kyauksein," or green stone, and to the Chinese, all varieties of the material are referred to as "Yu" or "Yu-chi", According to Confucius, jade was symbolical of. justice, harmony, intelligence, and humanity, and the Chinese of today believe that by using ornaments made of this stone, the wearer is. protected from the "evil eye" as well as from diser.se. Ornaments of carved jade were known to the ancient civilizations of Mexico and Peru and to the peoples of other sections. of Central and South America, Jade ornaments also have been found in the lake dwellings of Switzerland and in Crete; thile in China, as far back as the Chou dynasty (B. C. 1122 B. C. 255) it was used in the production of various classes of precious vessels and as insignia of rank.

In the past few years the advance of the Sunshine mine to national prominence as the chief silver-producing mine of the United States has revived interest in the area in which it is situated. Although this area lies between the great lead-Zinc-silver mines at Kellogg and those in the vicinity of Burke and Mullan it was generally presumed to be almost barren, as little ore had been found there until substantial ore bodies were developed on deep levels of the Sunshine mine. In early days it was called the "dry belt" because its ores were siliceous and contained little lead; but the classification of ores in smelting as wet or dry, although once customary, has long been obsolete The area will therefore be referred to in this paper as the silver belt of the Coeur d'Alene district because the value of its ore is due chiefly to silver, the current production of which is large, providing over 60 percent of the silver output of Idaho. Silver Belt - Its Limits and Character With a daily production of half a ten of silver or more from the Sunshine mine, the silver belt has become the scene of extensive exploration at many properties, and the outlook for its future seems promising enough to warrant the lively interest now being displayed in the area by the public.

"INTRODUCTION Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is one of the most toxic industrial gases and of relatively wide occurrence in industry. Among its common industrial occurrences are, in the production and refining of high-sulphur petroleum, in natural gases, in gypsum and sulphur mining, in rock strata and underground waters (where it is encountered in tunneling and caisson work) in blasting with black powder and in blasting high-sulphide ores with other explosives, in gas manufacture, in the carbonization of coal, and in the manufacture of chemicals.The usual methods of detection, other than by the sense of smell, which is lost in 2 to 15 minutes' exposure to 0.010. to 0.015 percent of this gas, 5/ either are too cumbersome for frequent and rapid analyses or, like the wet lead acetate paper test, afford only qualitative results. A qaantitative determination usually involves the use of solutions, bubblers, flowmeters, standard solutions, burettes, and indicators manipulated by trained technical men. All apparatus and methods in common laboratory use are, in general, unsuitable for the field.The physiological response attending exposure to various Concentrations of hydrogen sulphide in air, is as follows, in percent by volume 6/:0.005 to 0.010: Subacute poisoning - slight symptoms, such as mild conjunctivitis and respiratory-tract irritation after 1-hour exposure."

Neighboring mines, like men who live in the same environment, often assume similar characteristics. In the Bridge River area of the Lillooet district in central British Columbia there is a remarkable exception to this rule. The Pioneer mine has a simple fissure over 3000 ft. long, with no faults of more than a few feet and with only minor variations in width; the Bralorne mine, 2½ miles away at the other end of the same intrusion, has developed one of the most intricate vein and fault systems in the West. Hinged faults displace the main vein for hundreds of feet, and sometimes become valuable veins themselves. The width of ore varies in a few yards from 2 to 60 ft. Changes in grade of ore are just as abrupt. The rocks that follow the veins or are cut by them often grade into one another or into the ore with no definite contacts. Although the complexity of the structure has left many problems unsolved, the development has indicated a fascinating geological pattern. The Bralorne is in the eastern portion of the Coast Range, 55 miles by spectacular mountain road from the Pacific Great Eastern Railway station of Bridge River. The adit tunnel runs easterly from Cadwallader Creek, a tributary of Bridge River that flows into the Fraser River. Steep mountains rise from 3300 ft. elevation above sea level at the creek to peaks and ridges at 8000 to 9000 ft. altitude. The lower slopes are heavily wooded while above 5000 ft. bare rocks, glaciers and snow-fields extend far above timber line. See Fig. 1. Story of the Bralorne The Lorne claim, staked in 1897, was one of the earliest lode locations in the Bridge River district. At that time it was 70 miles by steep and treacherous trail from the railway. For the next 15 years Arthur Noel, Will Haylmore and other local prospectors mined the small, irregular, oxidized quartz veins to a maximum depth of 200 ft., and treated the ore in arrastres and later a five-stamp mill. The total production to 1912 was only $55,000. Noel and associates later formed the Lorne Amalgamated Mines Co., which they worked in a desultory way until 1925. This paper, describing the various mining methods and practices at Britannia mines, Britannia Beach, British Columbia, is one of a series covering mining practices, methods, and costs in the mining districts of the United States and Canada. The Britannia property has been operated continuously for 30 years, and in that time many diverse methods have been used in exploiting the various types of orebodies worked. Under normal conditions mining methods include surface gloryholes, shrinkage stoping, shrinkage with powder drifts for primary breaking, horizontal cut-and-fill, horizontal and inclined square-setting, and timbered and open rills, the three latter systems being combined with close filling. The Britannia method of mining, a large-scale retreating shrinkage system usually combined with powder drifts for primary breaking, has been developed and applied here very successfully. Each block of ground as developed is studied as a separate problem, and the mining method, or combination of methods best adapted to the work in hand is applied thereto. Operating at, capacity, the series of mines produces 7,000 tons of ore per day.

MACHINE mining on the pitch plays an important part in the produc-tion schedule at the Salem Hill Colliery of the Haddock Mining Co. This mine is just outside the city of Pottsville, in Schuylkill County, along the southern border of the Anthracite Region. The entrance to the mine is through a cross-measure tunnel 15 ft. above water level and running north 1500 ft. until it strikes the Rabbit Hole vein, where the machine mining is carried on. The main slope, dipping south, was sunk 1200 ft. in the Rabbit Hole vein with levels turned off at 300-ft. intervals. The vein is from 24 to 30 in. thick on a varying pitch of 20° to 40°. The overburden has differed from 50 to 466 ft., the most recent work having the maximum overburden. Immediately over the Rabbit Hole vein is a seam of soft sand slate from 1 to 4 ft. thick which presents a problem at times because it dis-integrates rapidly when exposed to the air. It will crack up and fall without any audible warning, therefore the workmen must always be on the alert, watching for loose slabs. The main top is sandstone, vary-ing in thickness from 8 to 20 ft. The bottom rock is similar to the top, but is finer grained and subject to a more complete disintegration. The vein has a 3 to 4-in. shelly band along the bottom, and all under-cutting has been done in this soft band.

This circular presents Part III-A of a series reviewing the literature on effects of breathing dusts with special reference to silicosis; it deals with the economic and legal aspects of dust diseases in industry; Part III-B will contain data on the status and cost of compensation for silicosis, Parts I and II of the series have been issued as Information Circulars 6835, 6840, and 6848; Part I defines and classifies dusts, indicates sources of exposure, and describes the physiological effects of breaching dusts; Part II-A discusses the principal dust factors producing pulmonary pathology and methods of determination of dust in air; and Part II-B presents data on the engineering and medical control in the prevention of dust diseases and general recommendations for their control in industry. A summary and general conclusions will complete the series.

Introduction In the following pages a general description is presented of the concentrator and cyanide plant of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, at Flin Flon, Manitoba, together with some account of the steps which have led to the adoption of the present practice. For an account of the preliminary test-work and pilot-mill operation, the reader is referred to a recent paper by R. E. Phelan on the History of Flin Flon Mine up to Construction (1). Additional notes may be found in a paper which the writer presented at the Annual Meeting of the Institute in 1930 (2). The first ore was crushed in the present plant on July 1st, 1930, and the first ball-mill was started one month later, on August 1st. Since that time, production has been continuous with the exception of one month lost during a strike in the summer of 1934. There have been no major changes in equipment or methods of treatment since the present plant was built, but many minor changes have contributed to the improvement in results obtained and to the increase in capacity to the large tonnage now being milled. The accompanying flow-sheets indicate the equipment used in the several plants, with the average life and repair cost. As originally built, the concentrator was to treat 3,000 tons per day, but the capacity has been increased to 4,400 tons. The methods adopted to make possible this increase in tonnage will be referred to below. It was the intention to produce two classes of ore: (1) a heavy sulphide, and (2) a disseminated ore. The mill was consequently divided into two sections, each adapted for most efficient treatment of one particular type of ore. However, it was soon found that it would be impossible to mine the two classes of ore separately, so it was decided to treat open-pit ore, which varies greatly in character, in the sulphide section, and underground ore, which is fairly constant, in the disseminated section. This segregation is still maintained.

General Description Due to the extreme cold weather experienced in Flin Flon during the winter months, thought and precaution were necessary in the design of the plant buildings. The machine shop, carpenter shop, drill shop, and coal plant buildings are similar in the building materials used in their construction. They are sided with two-inch shiplap, insulated with celotex and asbestos paper, and covered with corrugated iron on all side-walls. Roofing consists of 2 by 4 lumber on edge, laminated, and further covered by celotex and three-ply roofing. These buildings are heated by means of unit heaters. The heaters are primarily steam-heated radiators, through which the air of the buildings is circulated by electrically-driven fans. Our machine shop is located to the east of, but central to, the main operating buildings of the mine and plant, and is so connected by a net work of tracks as to be able to serve all portions of the entire plant conveniently. The building is divided into two bays, the main bay 53 ft. by 340 ft., and the east bay 24 ft. by 340 ft. The shop office and drafting room, a two-story annex 24 ft. by 30 ft., is located on the west side of the shop. The arrangement within the shop is such as to house conveniently the several departments, namely, heavy machine tool section, repair floor section, boiler shop heavy tool and floor section, blacksmith heavy tool and forge section, tool room, electric welding rooms, stock room, tin and copper shop, and electrical parts and armature winding and repair shop (see Figure 1). All the heavy tools, the repair floor section, and railway tracks are so located in the large open bay as to be fully serviced by an electrically operated 15-ton bridge crane, with a span of 50 feet and a travel the full length of the shop. A standard-gauge railway track, branched off the main line, penetrates the full depth of the building. This track lies along the extreme east side of the main bay, allowing easy entrance and movement of rolling stock and heavy machinery, loaded on standard flat-cars, to the repair floors in the main bay. Eight jib cranes, affixed to building columns, further facilitate the heavy repair work throughout the various shop divisions. Our light and heavy machine tools are standard equipment, not unlike tools used in mine, mill, and railway shops.

Introduction Up to the present, the operation of small mills for the treatment of gold ores has not been favoured in Canada to the extent that it has in other countries. For instance, a list of the operating properties in Southern Rhodesia, published in The Rhodesian Mining Journal of November, 1934, shows for the month of September, 1934, that there were over 500 small mills treating less than 50 tons per day, and the majority of these between 5 and 25 tons. They are operated by individuals, syndicates, and small mining companies. It is presumed that the operations are profitable, although from the published figures of the tonnages treated and the yields, it is difficult for one familiar with Canadian operations to understand how this can be possible, in the majority of cases. Most of these small mills employ stamps with plate amalgamation and with, occasionally, tables to produce a concentrate. Enquiries have been received from many parts of the world respecting milling practice suitable for small gold mines and the type of plant used in Canada. The tenor of these enquiries leaves the impression that the majority of the writers assume that the practice would be similar at all small properties. This, of course, is not the case. Conditions vary widely, and what would be a suitable mill for a typical Nova Scotia ore would not necessarily be wholly adaptable to many ores in Ontario, Quebec, or British Columbia. This paper has been written with the intention of inviting discussion, and it is hoped that, by such discussion, the subject will be more fully dealt with than has been possible in the time at the disposal of the writer. Only more or less standard principles and practices have been dealt with, and, purposely, no reference has been made to plants using mills of the Hadsel, the Nutt, or the Gibson type. As there is available but little reliable information on the costs of installation and operation of small mills, it is also hoped that those contributing to the discussion of milling practices for small mines will be in a position to give these data for the benefit of those contemplating the erection of small plants in Canada. Although it is difficult to generalize, it can be said that there are three types of gold mills commonly used at small mines: (1) Amalgamation and Gravity Concentration; (2) Amalgamation and Flotation; and (3) Cyanidation.
