THE world-wide continuation of low prices for zinc in 1934 has militated against any striking changes in the position of the metal. The price of zinc in London at the end of the year, about £11 5/8 per long ton, or 2.5c per pound at the existing rate of exchange, is more than 25 per cent below the average price for last year. In these circumstances probably the most significant event of the year was the putting into operation of the new electrolytic plant of the Giesches company at Magdeburg, Germany. This plant is designed to have an initial capacity of 20,000 long tons per year, and it is planned to increase this to 40,000 tons annually. This development is significant not only as indicating a continued swing of zinc metallurgy towards electrolytic methods, but also because it will make Germany virtually independent of foreign sources of zinc. This will mean that the zinc tonnage normally exported to Germany from Belgium and Poland will. become available for other markets, and it is feared may lead to lower prices unless the production of Bel-

PROCESSES for the direct production of iron and steel from ores are hardy perennials, and new processes and revivals of old ones are continually being brought to the attention of the investing public if not to the attention of metallurgists. Direct production of iron and steel is so simple that it offers a fertile field for the promoter. Unfortunately in this way direct processes have acquired a bad name, not always deserved, with conservative capitalists and metallurgists. Direct processes cannot, except in special instances, be looked upon as a substitute for any single operation in present iron and steel practice but must be considered, as one link in an entirely new chain of metallurgical process from ore to finished steel. Thus it is, in my opinion, inadvisable to consider the use of sponge-iron processes as a means of treating ore of ordinary blast-furnace grade to produce open-hearth feed. In time I think it will be found equally inadvisable to smelt iron-ore concentrates in the blast furnace.

ANYONE doubting prosperity in the mining industry should visit the Kootenays of British Columbia where the West Kootenay Power & Light Co. is kept busy running new power lines and connecting mines and mills with lines already in service. Quoting from an inspired statement "The four hydro-electric plants of the West Kootenay Power & Light Co. on Kootenay River have been in continuous operation." At the recent 35th annual meeting of the Eastern' British Columbia Boards of Trade held in Nelson, a two-day session indicated unusual activity. The following information was obtained through personal contact, through the press, and by hearsay. Much of it has been checked and proved accurate. Reversing the order of the flowsheet. Secretary J. NEW trend in geophysics has been uncovered in these depression years, made evident through the thinning cloak of commercial activity, which, in better times, would have completely obscured it. I refer to the increasing use of these methods for geological investigations by federal and state geological surveys. This is a trend that has been gathering momentum not alone in the United States, but abroad as well. Thus, in Poland, the Geological Survey has been playing an increasing role in geophysical work since 1927, and now has- its own geophysical department. The government petroleum producing organization of Argentina has its Geophysical Commission; Brasil boasts a completely equipped geophysical department in its Mineral Production Service; the government of Chile has contracted with commercial companies for geophysical surveys; Peru is planning an intensive program of geophysical prospecting in its petroliferous regions; and Canada has, for several years, cooperated with

Nearly 55 years have elapsed since the U. S. Geological Survey was organized. During this period the mineral industries have grown from infancy or early childhood to well developed maturity, and some mining industries appear to be declining. Decline in mining is even more conspicuous in certain districts, or even states, than in any mining industry as a whole, and discoveries or developments of important new districts have been very few in recent years. Our reserves of most metals and nonmetals are adequate for many years of normal production, subject to changes in rate of exploitation that may be caused by foreign competition and by changes in technology and market conditions; but the declining production of many districts and the scarcity of important new discoveries to compensate for them is cause for some apprehension. It is likely that future production will depend to a considerable extent on deep exploration and on the thorough examination of places in and adjoining existing districts where significant outcrops are lacking and only apparently insignificant geologic features offer encouraging clues—more so than on the discovery of entirely new districts. Even the possible discovery of new districts, which have escaped the intensive search by the nontechnical prospector, must be dependent on geologic information. There is therefore no need for argument as to the value of geology to the mining industry; and the need of continuing to advance the science. The U. S. Geological Survey's past contributions to mining geology, as expressed in its official reports and other publications, are recognized by Ransome in his historical review of mining geology in the Lindgren volume.' These contributions have helped to form the basis of modern mining geology, which has grown rapidly in the last 25 years. This growth has witnessed the organization and maintenance of geologic staffs by mining companies in several districts, and their detailed work, together with the fact that nearly all of the larger mining districts have

The United States has never attained importance as a producer of asbestos, the domestic output being only 1 to 3 percent of the quantity required to supply raw material for its extensive asbestos-product manu- facturing industries. Production is centered in four principal countries-- Canada, Rhodesia, Union of South Africa, and the Soviet Union. Since asbestos first became an important commercial commodity the Province of Quebec, Canada, has led in tonnage produced, but a large proportion of the output of this province is shorter, nonspinning grades. Since 1916 the Union of South Africa and Rhodesia have become increasingly important as sources of the higher-grade spinning fibers. Before the World War Russia ranked next to Canada as a producer of asbestos, but during the revolution- ary period the industry in that country was almost at a standstill. In 1926, however, activity was revived, and each year since then production and exports have increased greatly. Minor quantities of asbestos are produced in Cyprus; Australia, Finland, and several other countries. Chrysotile is the leading product in all the producing countries, but substantial quantities of both blue (crocidolite) and brown (amosite) asbestos also are produced in the Union of South Africa. Minor quantities of anthophyllite and similar amphibole varieties are mined in the United States, Italy, Bulgaria, Finland, and several other countries.

The material in this paper is intended simply, to be an inquiry into some of the theoretical aspects of the occurrence of methane and carbon dioxide in coal, with a brief resume of the more recent literature. Several discussions on various phases of the subject have been published, a few of which (4, 20, 25, 88, 90)4/ have more or less extensive bibliographies of tie earlier literature. In large measure the pertinent literature deals with the unusual aspects of the subject, and in consequence it might appear that the normal aspects have not been given due consideration here. The latter information is largely a matter of practical field experience, and since that which is normal to one locality is often abnormal to another no sharp differentiation appears to be necessary or, in fact, possible. No attempt will be made to present a critical discussion of the relations between the presence of gases in coal and pertinent geologic features or mining practice. Although the presence of foreign gases in the ventilating air of many mines is not particularly noticeable, in many others the evolution of methane and perhaps small amounts of carbon dioxide (or sometimes the reverse - large amounts of carbon. dioxide with perhaps sore methane) is quite apparent.

The purpose of this paper is to present a scientific method for determining the proper span and shape of roof for safe and economical mining; at present, these two vital factors wherever pillars are left to support the roof are determined by local practice or general experience. To develop the method described here, experimental laboratory work was done. The arch adopted was a segment of a circle, a flat roof being considered an arch with an infinite radius. Hitherto, arches have been used underground without the background of stress analysis that generally precedes arch construction on the surface. In many cases results have not been as expected, because of the lack of knowledge of the factors affecting its strength and behavior. A theoretical and experimental study of arches should furnish information that will make it possible to design safe and economical surface structures as well as underground openings. For example, on the subject of mine drifts and tunnels, the present idea is that arching their backs increases their strength; this paper will indicate that this is not always true, and if it can be shown that under certain conditions arching becomes unnecessary an economic saving will result. In room-and-pillar work a question may arise as to whether arching the roof and gobbing the excavated material will result in timber saving, and a decrease in the dangers from falls of roof. It is to be distinctly understood that each mine must be treated as an individual problem, and that answers to these questions and many others can now be found after experimental laboratory data have been obtained. Mine-Arch Structure Fig. 1 shows the elements that affect the strength or behavior of the experimental arch. They are the span, crown thickness, radius of curvature, rise and restraint. A description of the methods used in driving two tunnels, 2 miles long each, one a 9-ft. and the other a 19-ft. diameter section, for the Owyhee Irrigation Project, Oregon. One heading of the smaller tunnel was driven 1315 ft. in 73 shifts in one month and 10,966 ft. of this section completed in ll½ months using two shifts for eight months and three shifts the rest of the time. This is a good illustration of the proper use of a mechanical shovel and the importance of careful selection of supplernentary equipment to secure best results. Large cars, speedier and heavier locomotives, 36-in. gage track of 45-lb. rail, and a good switching method increased actual shoveling time and cut down muck removal period about 45 minutes from average. The larger tunnel, after trying out standard electric revolving shovels of both the rail mounting and caterpillar tread types, was excavated with a mechanical mucker. This is the first time that a tunnel of so large a section has been handled this way. This record work was accomplished without drill carriages.

During the past 5 years the Bureau of Mines has published information circulars dealing with mining methods and costs at 78 ore mines; 7 circulars, each of which is devoted to a discussion of one of the principal mining, methods; and 23 circulars dealing with special phases of mining, such as ventilation, shaft sinking, tunnel driving, the cost of equipping and developing prospects and small mines, underground transportation, diamond drilling, and ground support. These circulars were written by many different authors, and in order that the method of presentation and the basis for compilation of data might be the same in all the papers the Bureau drafted an outline to be followed in their preparation. To clarify the data in these circulars, which are in the libraries of many engineers and mining companies, and the summarized data presented in this paper, that portion of the outline dealing with cost and labor-performance data is reproduced below.

ThE raw materials of the ceramic industry are mostly clays. This raw material is ground, water is added and the mixture pugged into a moist, plastic, rather stiff mass. From this mass the desired units of manufacture are made (bricks, hollow building tile, sewer pipe, etc.). These units are dried; then placed in kilns and heated until the desired degree of vitrification is obtained. For firing ceramic ware, two distinct types of kilns are used; namely, periodic and continuous tunnel. Periodic Kilns Periodic kilns are those ordinarily seen in a brick plant. They are either round or rectangular. The raw, dried, formed ware is piled or set in the kilns to depths frequently exceeding 10 ft. The kiln is heated until the ware is matured, then gradually cooled sufficiently to allow men to remove the ware; then the cycle is repeated. The time duration of the cycle may be more than two weeks. In order that heat can be distributed uniformly throughout the pile or setting, the units are placed so as to leave open spaces or flues throughout the pile for the passage of the hot gases. Each kiln is provided with a number of fireboxes (usually 10 or 12) spaced equally in the outside wall. The fireboxes may be equipped with flat or inclined grate bars or they may have no grates at all (dead bottom). Down-draft kilns are most used. In these the hot gaseous products of combustion from the fireboxes are deflected upward by bag walls just inside the fire zone. From the top of the kiln the gases are drawn down through the setting, off through holes in the kiln bottom, and conducted to a stack or stacks. In up-draft kilns the fireboxes are usually set somewhat lower. The hot gases are drawn inward and upward through the ware and pass off from the top. Up-draft kilns find their greatest use in the firing of common brick. In either case the problem is to maintain, as nearly as possible,

This paper describing the operations of the Cresson mine of the Cresson Consolidated Gold Mining & Milling Co. at Cripple Creek, Colorado, is one of a series of papers on mining methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Cresson has recently been the most, important mine in the Cripple Creed district. During 1932 and 1933 an average of 230 tons of new ore (excluding dump material) that averaged about $10 in gold was shipped daily; 150 to 175 men were employed. Stoping was by the shrinkage method exclusively. The ore was screened washed, and hand-sorted at the surface and shipped to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs for treatment. A considerable proportion of the production was made by lessees working under the so-called "split-check" system. The authors are indebted to the management of the Cresson Consolidated Gold Mining & Milling Co. for permission to publish this paper.

The studies previously made on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace have dealt with the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co. at Tooele, Utah, and on the smelter of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Smelting Co. at Kellogg, Idaho. The International plant may be considered representative of the traditional custom smelter. The lead smelter of the future seemingly will have to treat increasingly richer lead charges. This feature was then stressed in describing the Bunker Hill plant.

High-volatile coals are most desirable for kiln firing. Low-volatile and even anthracite coals can be used successfully. Most periodic kilns use coal and are hand fired. A few stoker installations have been economically successful. Continuous tunnel kilns reduce fuel consumption 40 to 55 per cent. They are rapidly replacing periodic kilns in the manufacture of the finer wares. They have found great favor in the refractory industry and are successfully used in firing almost all kinds of heavy clay products. Fuel oil has found rather wide application in the Southwest and West. Natural gas is a satisfactory fuel for kiln firing. It is the principal competitor of coal and has largely replaced it for firing the finer wares but cannot compete with it in firing heavy clay products except in regions where cheap gas is available. Figures are given showing the relative thermal efficiency of coal and natural gas as used for firing ceramic ware. The ceramic industry uses from 12,000,000 to 12,500,-000 tons of coal per normal year. The principal use of coal is in firing the heavy clay products. This potential market amounts to about 9,250,000 tons per year. Coal producers could increase sales by furnishing expert firing instruction.

Meerschaum or sepiolite is employed principally in tobacco pipes and cigar and cigarette holders, although a few other uses of minor importance are Down. The unique value of a meerschaum pipe is derived from the owner's pleasure in watching the color deepen with smoking and in having the color "set" at the desired shade. The name "meerschaum" (German for "sea foam") is applied because the material, when pure and dry, will float on water. Owing to its resemblance to the porous, bonelike structure of the cuttlefish, or septa, it is also known as sepiolite. There are a few scattered deposits of meerschaum in. the United States which have yielded a small product ion, but the world's supply of the' material is obtained fined principally from Asia Minor, Meerschaum deposits near Eski-Shehir, Turkey, are said to have been worked 2,000 years ago, but commercial exploitation is a development of the last hundred years DESCRIPTION AND PROPERTIES Meerschaum is a hydrous magnesium silicate (H4Mg2Si3010) having the following theoretical analysis: Si02, 60.8 percent; MgO, 27.1 percent; H20, 12.1 percent. It is a soft. (H.2 - 2.5), fine-grained, earthy, white, gray, or yellow material. It is very light weight when pure (specific gravity, 1 to 2) and is highly absorbent. Because of its porosity the proportion of water present in the mineral is affected by the humidity'of the atmosphere. In a moist atmosphere the water content may be as much as 21.7 percent. Then wet the material is soft and somewhat plastic. When dried again it becomes lard and tough. The toughness is especially apparent in some forms that have a fibrous or leathery texture.

Prevention of coal-mine explosions depends largely upon thorough knowledge of the causes that initiate explosions. A review of coal-mine explosions in one geographical area when supplemented by nationwide data of similar nature, should serve as a guide for the adoption of measures for explosion prevention. Explosions in bituminous-coal mines of the United States during the 10 years ended December 31, 1932, ranked third in the causes of fatal accidents and constituted 16.1 percent of all fatal accidents in bituminous mines. Kentucky now ranks fourth in coal output in the coal-producing States of this country; a study of the coal-mine explosions in this state will be of definite interest locally among coal-mining people, as well as to those in the coal-mining industry who are concerned in preventing coal-mine explosions. This circular reviews gas and dust explosions in Kentucky coal mines to show their hazards, to point out the influence of certain factors in causing explosions, and to indicate the effectiveness of preventive measures.
