The Butler Mine property is situated in the vicinity of Pittston, in the Wyoming coal-field of Pennsylvania. The coal has been ' worked out from the fourteen-foot or Baltimore vein for a number of years on part of the tract, the old chambers remaining open as when originally abandoned. This vein outcrops on the Butler prop erty, and is nowhere more than sixty feet below the surface of the ground on the line of the cut-off to be described. Above the four teen-foot vein and about, say midway, between it and the surface of the ground, there is another small vein or rider of coal, about twelve inches in thickness. The rock between the two veins is a carbon aceous slate, about twenty-five feet in thickness. Above the smaller vein is a bed of sandstone, varying in thickness, but generally not less than from eight to ten feet. This sandstone is also carbonaceous, but the proportion of carbon is much less than in the slate below. Both rocks have been analyzed, and before the next Institute meet ing, the writer hopes to be able to furnish the exact proportions. The sandstone is overlaid with debris up to the surface of the ground. Some time during the spring of 1876, it was found that the coal left in the worked-out mine had been set on fire, and that the fire was gradually spreading. Inquiry developed the fact that the fire had originally been started by a woman, who had taken up her abode in an old tunnel leading into the workings. Owing to some delay in the early attempts made to extinguish the fire, it finally gained such headway that no ordinary means were found to be effectual. Finally, Mr. C. F. Conrad, civil and mining engineer, of Pittston, Penna., was called in as consulting engineer. He advised the making of a thorough cut through such portion of the old workings as had not been reached by the fire. It was found by survey that this cut could be limited to a length of about one thousand two hundred feet, as the vein faulted on both sides, and that the greatest depth of the cut would be about sixty feet. Subsequently it was decided to tunnel part of the way, thus saving the deepest portion of the cut. In 1856-7, there occurred a fire in the same mine. Two stone walls in V-shape running from the apex of the V towards the out crop, were built to cot the fire 06 and these walls were carried as far as the vein had at that time been worked. (Read at the Wilkes-Barre Meeting, May, 1877.) Two systems are used for heating air in blast-furnace operations I. The double surface system, in which a cast-iron pipe is heated on the outer surface, and, at the same time, heats the blast from its inner surface. This is simple in operation and gives a continuous effect, but is limited by 1100° F. as a maximum temperature of the blast. II. The single surface system, by which large surfaces of fire-brick are heated, and air passed over the heated surface, absorbing the heat and carrying it on to the furnace. This system is more complex than the double surface, as it involves the reversing of the air and gas every hour and a half. The single surface system has two advantages: 1. The blast can be heated to a temperature of 1800° F. 2. The stoves are indestructible. From recent experience it has been found that 1300° F. to 1400° F. is the best average temperature for economy of coal for safe work¬ing. This is equivalent to a saving of 12 to 2 cwt. of coal per ton, of iron over the extreme limit of cast-iron stoves. Independently of this, it is a strong point in favor of this system that the blast can be raised to a temperature of 1800° F. within an hour when the hearth is getting cold. All furnacemen know the value of a hot hearth for quality and quantity of iron. Cooling of a hearth occurs from leaky tuyeres, scaffolds, or heavy burden. When there is not sufficient coal at the tuyeres to seize on the oxy¬gen of the entering air and convert it at once to carbonic oxide, there will not be enough heat to liquefy the cinder. Black cinder and poor iron are the results. The remedy is additional heat from the blast. If the stoves will give 1800° in place of 1100°, it is obvious that the furnaces will get around sooner, and without waiting for a change of burden at the tunnel head to bring extra coal to the hearth. The heat absorption caused by a leaky tuyere will chill the hearth and drive the zone of fusion higher up in the furnace. This loss must be supplied, and the calories lost to the hearth must be regained before good iron can be made. Take another case : A furnace carefully burdened on No. 1 iron, during a spell of damp weather, goes on to No. 2 or No. 3. Heat is lost to the furnace through absorption by the moisture, and less burden must be carried in order to get back on No. 1. When the

(Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) THE Mariposa estate, a grant made by the Mexican Government to Juan B. Alvarado, during the time when California was still under the dominion of Mexico, was purchased in 1847 by J. C. Fremont, and the United States patent issued to him in 1856. By sale, or its equivalent, money advanced, the property came into the hands of the Mariposa Company, June 25th, 1863, and through a varied existence of work and temporary inactivity, has as yet been kept as an undivided property, and rests at present with the Mariposa Land and Mining Company of California. I pass over this period of 15 years without giving the history of the ups and downs of the estate, partly because it is familiar to many, and also because I think in such a case this paper would assume too much the character of a narrative. The estate is situated in Mariposa County, California, about 170 miles southeast of San Francisco. It begins in lat. 37° 26’ 38" - north, and long. 119° 55' west, and runs 6 miles north; thence 6 1/2 miles west; thence 5 miles northwesterly towards the Merced River; thence 8 1/2 miles southerly; thence 3 miles easterly; thence 1 mile southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 2 miles southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence I mile southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 1 mile northerly, and thence 2 miles easterly to the place of the beginning; embracing 44,387 acres (70 sq. miles) more or less. To describe this vast estate in detail as to its full geology, its numerous quartz veins, its many facilities to exploit them and work them by cheap methods, would lead me further than I intend to go at present, and I will content myself to describe the latest workings of the company and its immediate field of operations. As long ago as 1860 the late Dr. Adelberg advised the running of an adit from the northwestern edge of the estate at Benton Mills on the Merced River. His object was to undercut the deepest workings of the then paying mines on the estate-the Pine Tree and Josephine. Following this advice, the tunnel known as "River Tunnel" was commenced. EHRENBERG was the first to publish and direct attention to the peculiarities of the diatomaceous deposit of Richmond; but how and by whom he was supplied with the material for his microscopical investigations, is not generally known; but we may presume W. B. Rogers, formerly State Geologist of Virginia, furnished the material, and may have given the geological position or horizon. O£ these facts we have no available evidence, nor have we any estimate of the thickness of this stratum of diatomaceous or infusorial earth. At the request of a member of this Institute, I have investigated the subject, and offer the following facts as the result, derived principally from information supplied by Mr. John Ott, of the Southern Fertilizing Company, Dr. William Taylor, State Chemist, C. Peticolas, microscopist, Captain Robert H. Temple, civil engineer, Major C. M. Bolton and Mr. C. M. Smith, civil engineers, and formerly engaged in constructing the tunnel under Church Hill, in Richmond. The city of Richmond is generally described as being built on seven hills. This is not the fact, geologically speaking. Originally, there was an immense plateau of land, about two hundred feet above tide, in which a deep excavation was made from the west to east by the James River cutting down to the granite. Opening southward and meeting the valley of the James are various ravines and gullies, in the principal of which are Shockoe and Gillies Creeks. The formation is tertiary, subdivided into all the classified divisions, but at the present moment no one has been found to make this section a special study. Rogers's early classifications and diagrams, with all their imperfections, are the only published records, and the printed editions are long since exhausted. IT is proposed to give, first, a description of the works ; second, a report of the first six months of the present blast; and third, such improvements as have been suggested by the practical working. The site selected for this furnace was, at the time of commencing work, October, 1872, entirely covered by the navigable waters of Lake Champlain. A coffer-dam was first built of cribs of round timber filled with stone, forming three sides, while the shore answered for the fourth. Considerable excavating was done with a steam-dredge, a hole being left for it to pass out. The opening was then built up, and the cribbing banked up with blue clay from the bottom of the lake, to render it water-tight and the dam pumped out; the remainder of the excavating being done by hand. All of the foundations, with the exception of the elevator-tower, and fifteen feet of the east side of hot blast, rest on the Potsdam sandstone, which forms the shore line, dipping into the lake at an angle of fifteen degrees. THE Musconetcong tunnel is situated in New Jersey, near the line of the Central Railroad of New Jersey, about twelve miles from Easton, on the Easton and Amboy Railroad, the latter being the extension of the Lehigh Valley Railroad to tide-water. Up to the present time, the terminus of the Lehigh Valley Railroad has been at Phillipsburg, N. J., opposite Easton, passengers connecting there with New York by the Morris and Essex (D. L. and W.) and New Jersey Central lines; freight and coal being forwarded by the Morris and Essex to tide-water at Hoboken, and by the Central Railroad to Elizabethport and Port Johnson ; also, by the Belvidere and Delaware connections through Trenton to South Amboy.

AT the meeting of the Institute in Easton, October, 1873, I made a communication on the Ore Knob copper mine, in Ashe County, North Carolina (Transactions, vol. ii, p. 123), in which I called attention to the chemical decomposition alike of the pyritous lode and the inclosing gneiss rock to a depth of 60 feet, by which the feldspar of the latter had been converted into clay, and the whole rock very much softened. Such a decomposition is well known to be almost universal in the crystalline rocks of the Appalachians south of the Potomac ; and if it is only seen in rare and exceptional cases farther to the northward, this, as I have elsewhere pointed out, is due to the fact that the decomposition began and ended in the ages anterior to the drift period, and that the decayed portions which still remained were at that time removed from the surface, except in some localities which were protected from the eroding agency. I have lately had an opportunity of studying a remarkable instance of this kind in an examination made last month for the corporators of the Hoosac Tunnel.* The locality is at the western base of Hoosac Mountain, the western slope of which rises rapidly 1300 feet above the town of North Adams, in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, itself 700 feet above the sea level. Through this mountain, as is well known, a tunnel for the Troy and Boston Railroad has lately been opened, a distance of 25,081 feet from east to west. The rock of the mountain consists of mica schist and micaceous gneiss, including in its western half a great mass of harder feldspathic and quartzose strata in part a granitoid gneiss, the strata for the most part dipping to the eastward with variable angles, but with occasional western dips, apparently due to inversion. The crystalline strata of the mountain crest and sides are in many places exposed, and present rounded surfaces, often deeply grooved and striated, but with no appearance of decay. At the western base of the mountain, however, the gneissic rock is in a state of complete decomposition, which was well displayed in opening the tunnel, which, for a distance of several hundred feet, was driven through highly inclined strata so much decomposed that they were excavated with pick and shovel, and without the aid of blast- * See, for a detailed account of this examination, Dr. Hunt's report, published by the General Court of Massachusetts in House Document No. 9, 1875.

THE opening session of the Institute was held at Hazle Hall, Tuesday evening, October 27th, with a large attendance of members. President Raymond called the Institute to order, and after a few introductory remarks, introduced Mr. I. Lowthian Bell, President of the Iron and Steel Institute of Great Britain, and Honorary Member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Mr. Bell was received with great applause, and made his acknowledgments in a brief speech, of which the following is the substance: He desired to thank the Institute personally for the honor conferred upon him in his election to membership, and also for the invitation extended last year to the body of which he was President. The difficulty felt by many members of the Iron and Steel Institute, of leaving for a long journey the works of which they had charge, aggravated by special industrial troubles at the time of the invitation, had obliged them to conclude that it could not then be accepted in a fitting manner. The iron manufacture of this country is a subject of great interest to Englishmen, who look with pride upon the achievements on this side the water of the descendants of a common ancestry. His own reception in this country had far surpassed in cordiality even the well-grounded anticipations he had formed from the assurances of the President and other friends. Notwithstanding the flattering manner in which his friend, in introducing him to the Institute, had spoken of his contributions to the science of iron metallurgy, he could not take to himself alone the significance of this welcome. He knew it was a recognition of the services rendered by the body which he had the honor to represent; and he was glad to see present a member of that body, Mr. Thomas Whitwell, who had fortunately been able to make the journey at this time, and whom he had had the pleasure of meeting on the shores of Lake Champlain. THE Fletcherville Furnace was built in 1864 and 1865, making its first blast from August until October of the latter year, when it was blown out to prevent its "bunging-up." Repairs were made in time to enable it to be blown in again December 12th, 1865, the blast ending October 7th, 1866. Total product 1921.15 tons iron, an average of 6.8.2.5 tons per day, from ores yielding 44.8 per cent. Consumption of charcoal 223.2 bushels per ton of iron. The furnace journal up to this time shows no record of furnace dimen¬sions, or temperature of the blast, but as near as can be ascertained, they were as follows, viz. Height of stack, 42 feet. Diameter of bosh, 11 feet. Angle of bosh, 7 1/2 inches to 12 inches rise, about 58°. Diameter of open tunnel head, 42 inches. Number of tuyeres 3; each 3 inches in diameter. Dam 15 inches high. Tuyeres 24 inches high. Tymp 22 1/2 inches high. Diameter of steam cylinder, 20 1/4 inches. Stroke 5 feet. Diameter of blast cylinder, 64 inches. The engine is direct-acting horizontal non-condensing. December 26th, 1.866, the furnace was again put in blast, having been considerably altered in the crucible; the height of stack, bosh, and tunnel head remaining as before. Six tuyeres were put in, three in each of the side arches. The hearth or crucible was rectangular in form, 3 feet wide x 32 feet long x 62 feet high. Inclination of bosh 58°. Height of tuyeres 26 inches ; nozzles 2 1/4 inches diameter. Temperature of blast estimated to be about 500°.

August 15th, 1871. THE Institute assembled in Packer Hall of the Lehigh University, the President, Mr. David Thomas, of Catasauqua in the chair. Professor Henry Coppée, President of the Lehigh University, made an address of welcome to the Institute, and placed at its disposal a convenient hall for purposes of meeting. Mr. Thomas tendered his resignation as President of the Institute, as advancing years prevented him from actively participating in its meetings. The Institute declined to accept the resignation, and, on the assurance that active duties would not be expected of him, Mr. Thomas was induced to withdraw it. Invitations were received from Mr. B. C. Webster, President of the Lehigh Zinc Company, to visit the mines and works of the company; from Mr. Charles Brodhead, to visit the Chapman Slate Quarries ; and from the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company, to visit their works at Summit Hill and Mauch Chunk and the Nesquehoning Tunnel. The Council reported the names of persons already elected in the two classes of members and associates. The following resolutions were passed: Resolved, That a committee of three be appointed, who shall take into consideration the printing and publishing of papers originating with the Institute, and that a uniform system as regards size and execution be adopted. The committee appointed consisted of Messrs. R. W. Raymond, E. B. Coxe, and the Secretary. Resolved, That the Council design and prepare a seal for the Institute at the earliest practicable time. Resolved, That a committee of six, with power to add to its numbers, be appointed to examine into the question of the more economical production of iron in this country.
