"The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) in Missouri, the country’s fourth largest sewer system, is upgrading its storm and wastewater infrastructure in a 23-yearlong, $4.7 billion initiative called “Project Clear.” Historically, during times of intense precipitation, the current sewer system becomes overwhelmed. The primary goals of this project are to improve water quality and to alleviate many wastewater concerns in the St. Louis region by planning, designing and building community rainscaping, system improvements and an ambitious program of maintenance and repair.Part of the system renovation has focused on constructing underground tunnels for storm water storage, permitting controlled drainage of runoff, and preventing overflows into rivers and streams. Construction plans for these storage tunnels called for eight vertical intake and ventilation shafts to be bored from the ground surface. These shafts will then be intercepted in the bedrock at a depth of about 150 ft (45.7 m) during the excavation of the 3,000 ft (915 m) long underground tunnel that will be about 28 ft (8.5 m) in diameter. According to John Deeken , a geotechnical engineer with Black & Veatch Corp. and construction manager for the Maline Creek project, the drilling and blasting technique for creating the shafts was ruled out because the project was located in a residential neighborhood. “We could have used rock coring or a cutter head, but the drop shaft for this project is constructed within 10 ft (3.05 m) of an existing 108 in (274 cm) diameter sewer main,” Deeken said. “We had to take precautions to avoid damage to it.”A primary planning mandate of all MSD Project Clear phases requires minimized impact on traffic and residents. The canister drilling method enabled work to be confined to the median of a residential boulevard running perpendicular to the side street without detouring traffic. In addition, canister drilling offered a highly-precise means to create the shafts, leaving a smooth-sided borehole, right on target. Ground conditions in this 132 in (3.35 m) diameter intake shaft were wet due to the high groundwater levels and close proximity to the Mississippi River. “They’ve been finding shale in 2 to 6 ft (0.6 to 1.8 m) layers between weathered layers of Mississippian limestone,” said Dan Spiecher, technician at Center Rock (CRI). “The 2 ft (0.6 m) layers we can punch through. The 6 ft (1.8 m) layers slow us down.”"

"INTRODUCTION Site location and history The Holden Mine is a former underground copper mine that was developed and operated by the Howe Sound Mining Company (Howe Sound) from 1938 to 1957. The mine is located in north-central Washington State, U.S., near Lake Chelan in the area shown as Holden Village in Figure 1. Although Rio Tinto never owned or operated the mine, they are managing and funding a several hundred million dollar clean-up to prevent future water and soil contamination and to reclaim the former mine site under the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Superfund process. The former mine included an onsite mill and a nearby housing complex for the miners. Howe Sound developed the mine as a series of near-horizontal drifts and tunnels, interspersed with stopes and shafts that connect different mine levels underground. The tunnels that were excavated to develop the mine total nearly 100 km in length.During development of the underground workings, Howe Sound removed more than 230,000 cubic meters (m3) of waste rock from the tunnels and deposited this material in two waste rock piles. Ore was processed from the mine in the onsite mill to produce a copper concentrate that was shipped off site for smelting. Roughly 10 million tonnes of tailings were produced as a by-product of the milling operation, most of which were deposited in three large impoundments (Tailings Piles 1, 2 and 3) directly south of and adjacent to Railroad Creek. Howe Sound closed the mine in 1957. In 1961, the property was transferred to Holden Village, Inc. (Holden Village), a not-for-profit corporation that maintains a year-round community and operates an interdenominational religious retreat in the former miners’ town. With the exception of the patented private land, the remainder of the Site is on National Forest lands and is administered by the U.S. Forest Service. The mine is remote. It is only accessible by boat or float plane from Chelan, Washington, up Lake Chelan to Lucerne, nearly 40 km. Vehicle access from Lucerne to the mine is provided through a 17.5-km-long winding gravel road that climbs 640 meters in elevation. The general site features are shown in Figure 2. Physical setting The Holden Mine is located on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountain Range at an elevation between 975 and 1,050 m above mean sea level. Holden Mine was developed adjacent to Railroad Creek, which lies in a glacial U-shaped valley carved into the igneous and metamorphic bedrock with steep-sided slopes (Figure 2)."

"As part of an on-going effort to improve water quality and reduce discharge into Boston Harbor, the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) East Boston Branch Sewer Relief Project was designed under a Federal mandate from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to upgrade the aging sewer system, increase system storage and greatly reduce the volume of combined sewer overflows into the Harbor. The project scope of work includes the installation of over 2 miles (11,800 linear feet) of 36-inch and 66-inch diameter sewer relief piping, twenty (20) temporary shafts and an approximate 100 foot open cut section, located within the densely populated neighborhood of East Boston, Massachusetts. This area is a former marshland backfilled in the early to mid 1800’s where busy commercial streets co-mingle with thickly settled residential houses.The subsurface conditions present within Boston’s complex geology include the presence of subsurface contamination as well as complex networks of underground utilities. Additional site limitations included low headroom, noise, and traffic restrictions. Together these limitations required the design of individual earth support systems, tailored for each shaft location. Moreover, challenging subsurface conditions identified during construction required design modifications to minimize cost and schedule impacts related to construction dewatering, treatment of contaminated groundwater, internal bracing, and utility relocations.This paper provides a case history of the Geo-structural design and performance of various earth support techniques utilized to construct jacking and receiving shafts designed to launch and receive two (2) micro-tunnel boring machines (MTBM) and to support the construction of new deep shaft structures in an urban coastal area."

"When finished (projected completion in 2016) the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Project will comprise three cable-stayed span bridges and a 4.15 mile immersed tube tunnel - linking Hong Kong to Macau and the mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai. The design included two artificial Islands to serve as the transition structures for the tunnel to bridges, entailing a massive seaborne land reclamation project, and the use of thousands of sheet piles, and man-hours. The challenges of driving individual steel sheet in 100’ of water are well known, let alone in the open waters of the South China Sea.In 2010 a joint effort between American Piledriving Equipment (APE) and Allnamics Pile Testing Experts convinced the Chinese contractor First Harbor Marine Group China that a massive multi-vibro hammer can be used to drive 130’ long, 72’ diameter steel pipe piles weighing 662 US tons each into the sea bed of the South China Sea for the Hong Kong - Zhuhai - Macau bridge artificial islands. Combining APE’s hammer design, production and operation know-how with the pile driving simulation and installation know-how of Allnamics made it possible to show the feasibility of driving these gigantic piles into bottom of the sea to the required depth.INTRODUCTIONThe challenges of driving individual steel sheets in deep water are well known, let alone in the open waters of the South China Sea. Often the challenges of construction are overcome with engineering or equipment. The challenges of China’s Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, on the drawing board since 1983, were to overcome both. The challenges of overcoming the skepticism of the Chinese Engineering community would be another story.The finished project will comprise three cablestayed span bridges and a 4.15 mile immersed tube tunnel linking Hong Kong on an eastern span to the China mainland cities of Zhuhai and Macau via two western spans."

Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) technique represents an important technological advance in the construction of piles in soft soils. The possibility of excavation under the water table with no need for drilling fluids, along with high productivity, have resulted in this technique’s becoming widespread in many countries. However, CFA technology has limitations because of its difficulty in penetrating hard layers and cross strata with cobbles and boulders. In these situations, pile verticality may be an additional problem. The Cased Augered Pile (CAP) technique consists of penetrating the soil with an auger housed in a casing. Two independent rotary heads sliding along the rig mast operate the auger and the casing. By adjusting the height of the casing shoe and auger bit according to soil type, it is possible to drill piles in very severe conditions - in the presence of cobbles and boulders - and to socket the pile into the rock. The use of a steel casing enables improved pile verticality. Therefore, the CAP technique is also used to construct secant piles to be used as diaphragm walls. The limitations of this technology are the depth, usually no more than 27 m (88 feet), and the size of the rig that supports the drilling tool, no less than 70 t (77 short tons) in working conditions. This paper illustrates CAP technology, the drilling system, and the characteristics of concrete and steel reinforcement and offers a case study of the Palermo-Carini second railway line, which used CAP to construct the new 30 km (18.6 mi) railway line, 20 km (12.4 mi) of which passes through the very congested downtown area of Palermo. "Acrylamide chemical grout (C3H2NO) has been successfully used for over 50 years to control groundwater and stop infiltration. This paper will address three unique projects involving the control of groundwater with each study providing special circumstances and geological conditions: encapsulation of radioactive hazardous waste in the United States, a tailings dam for a large copper/gold mine in Argentina and 27 miles of leaking subway in Canada. "This paper outlines how specification driven design has made Toronto Area transit infrastructure projects more expensive than similar private projects, and provides a case study of the results of an excavation at Launch Shaft 1 (LS1) for the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit project in Toronto, Ontario. The paper will describe the impact specification driven design parameters can have on design economy, constructability, and schedule and will suggest an alternative approach utilizing the Observational Method. As a result of the initial specification based design, Isherwood was retained by both the General Contractor and the Specialty Excavation Shoring Contractor to provide value engineering leveraging the Observational Method to improve constructability and construction schedule. By using well known, accepted design methods coupled with local experience in lieu of the specified design pressures and parameters, the redesigned bracing scheme reduced construction cost and schedule. This excavation case history can be a lesson learned for future transit projects.The City of Toronto has been developing its transportation network since the mid 1800’s. “Canada’s First Subway” along Yonge Street opened in March 1954 (TTC 1954), with a few additions to the subway network through to the 1980’s. The following two decades marked a long period of slow development due to recessions, budget cuts, and politics along with several cancelled projects. To fill the gap left by years of underfunding, several new transit projects are now under construction in the city as a part of Metrolinx’s $50B, 25 year, “The Big Move” initiative (Metrolinx 2013). The work on these types of infrastructure projects is highlighting a different and developing challenge within the tendering and design specification structure we will call Prescriptive Specification Design (PSD).PSD is a method used within contract specifications to control design risk on a project by applying conservative design methods, factors of safety, or other parameters to make a “fool proof” design. It is akin to requesting a colouring by numbers approach from a painter. There are inherent risks of using this method of tendering a project including increased project costs, longer construction schedules, and decrease of overall project economy. In PSD, the Owner “owns” all of the design risk on a project, including any additional costs due to changed site conditions. However, the Contractor commonly “owns” the risk of any deviations from the design specification they pursue, therefore making any improvements to the design, cost, or schedule less desirable from the Contractor’s point of view. The impact of this type of strict specified approach to design has been seen in transit infrastructure projects in the Toronto area. Figure 1 outlines the range of specified AEPD design pressures as a function of excavation height (H) specified for use in Toronto underground transit projects since the 1970’s to present day. A clear trend can be seen with respect to increased design pressures specified. The ranges shown for each project are intended to account for the potential differences in soil conditions for the highly overconsolidated glaciated soils in the Toronto area. The graph also highlights the typical range, in blue, for the industry practice in Toronto for comparison."

The measurement of deflection of designed diaphragm walls is critical for near real time information to assess wall and soil behaviour as the internal area is excavated in a controlled manner. Data enables the site team and designers to check performance of the design, which is linked to safeguarding the site and the external stakeholders.This paper documents the use of Shape Accel Arrays at the Tottenham Court Road Western Ticket Hall during excavation and propping within the diaphragm wall for the Crossrail project. It shows how the data obtained was used within the site settlement management plan to assist in the control of the works and the information used for Value Engineering purposes that benefitted the project.The use of Shape Accel Arrays for measuring the deflection of retaining walls is not commonplace in the UK construction industry, with the Tottenham Court Road Western Ticket Hall being one of the first times they have been used in such a way. A detailed analysis of the data obtained from the instruments has been undertaken, and compared to the results obtained from the manual inclinometers that were read next to the SAAs. The advantages of the relatively new SAAs have been discussed, as well as other applications of the instrument.

"No. 9 Walton is a new high-rise condominium building located in the Gold Coast area of Chicago. The adjacent building, Walton on the Park, featured 4 levels of below grade parking and utilized a secant pile wall with integral drilled shafts to support the exterior columns. The earth retention system (ERS) for No. 9 Walton also employed a secant pile wall in combination with drilled shafts. The excavation into the soft Chicago clays varied in depth from 9.75 m to 12.5 m (32 feet to 41 feet) below grade. The temporary excavation support used internal braces from the new secant piles to the existing foundation system of Walton on the Park to provide earth retention. Engineering teams for both projects worked together to design the bracing scheme and connections to ensure that the new excavation and internal bracing would not overstress any elements of the existing structure. Further complicating the project, immediately to the west of the project was a historic church founded on shallow spread footings which required underpinning to minimize movements.The project involved three different building owners, small values for acceptable wall movement, an extensive monitoring program and the challenges of merging two earth retention systems. The subsurface conditions at the site, the adjacent structures, the excavation, and the performance are described. A summary of the design methods and the expected movements of the ERS are discussed, and the performance monitoring system is described. Overall, the ERS performed better than expected with less than 1 inch of measured lateral wall movement during and after the excavation was completed. Measured performance of the ERS is compared to the predicted performance and to the performance requirements for the project.INTRODUCTIONNo. 9 Walton is a new high-rise condominium building in Chicago located in the Gold Coast. Developers originally slated the project to be Phase 2 of the Walton on the Park development built in the mid 2000’s, using portions of the existing foundation system for development of the new structure. However, the housing market crash in 2007 prompted cancellation of Phase 2 of the Walton on the Park development. The property sat undeveloped until 2015 when design and construction for No. 9 Walton began under a new development and design team. The project team completed foundation excavation and below grade structures in 2016 with the first units of the building turned over to new homeowners in 2017.The structural design for No. 9 Walton consisted of reinforced concrete columns and slabs, supported laterally by a heavily reinforced concrete central core. Drilled shafts to rock supported the interior columns and core with the exterior columns and foundations integrally included in the earth retention system. The structure had a below-grade footprint of approximately 1,490 m2 (16,000 ft2). The general excavation extended 9.75 m to 12.5 m (32 feet to 41 feet) below street level with the deepest portions at the central building core mat foundation."

"Energy geostructures are becoming an increasingly popular solution around the world for Developers looking to reduce CO2 and system running costs. Energy geostructures are geotechnical structures that provide both the important role of structural stability while also acting as a heat exchanger with the ground, enabling the supported buildings and or infrastructure to be heated and cooled using the principle of low enthalpy geothermal systems. The main advantage of this innovative technology with respect to standard geothermal plant is the reduction of the initial installation costs and construction schedule benefits, compared to installing conventional geothermal solutions, largely due to the additional use of structures which would be constructed in any case. However, it is important with respect to energy geostructures that additional aspects need careful consideration. For this very reason, several research studies have been carried out over the last decade on this subject and a number of real case studies have been monitored and analysed. The key difference with respect to conventional shallow geothermal systems are mainly related to the geometry, which is imposed by the geotechnical project, and the need to ensure that the primary structural role is always guaranteed. Special boundary conditions, the reduced depth, the influence of atmospheric external temperature can also play an important role for energy geostructures. They can affect, both energy efficiency and, the geotechnical behaviour because of the possible thermal induced mechanical effects. This paper presents a picture of the current situation regarding energy geostructures and their peculiar features, and collects available data to provide a reference framework. Data has been collected from literature and personal communications and then processed to provide easy-to-read charts useful for practical consultation at a glance. This paper provides, an indication of the distribution of such systems worldwide, their spread in time, and a global view of their actual efficiency from the structural, energy, economic and environmental point of view.1. IntroductionEnergy geostructures are becoming an increasingly popular consideration around the world. Energy geostructures are geotechnical structures with a dual role of providing structural stability and the ability to exchange heat with the ground, to provide low carbon heat and coolth to supporting and or adjacent buildings and infrastructure, using the principle of low enthalpy geothermal systems (Barla and Di Donna, 2016; Laloui and Di Donna, 2013). A closed circuit of high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes is embedded in the concrete, and a heat carrier fluid circulates through them exchanging heat with the ground. The HDPE pipework circuit inside the geostructure is linked to one of the above buildings or infrastructure through a heat pump, which adapts the temperature of the circulating fluid to the heating (winter mode) and cooling (summer mode) needs. In this way, heat can be injected into the ground during summer and extracted from it during winter. In principle, all structures in contact with the ground can be used as energy geostructures. The first examples of energy geostructures date back to the eighties in Austria and were mainly piles and shallow foundations. A decade later, Henderson et al. (1999) reported on what would appear to be the first successful use of geothermal energy piles in the US, with loops incorporated into the foundation for a hotel in Geneva, New York. As was their use in this New York case history, the typical geothermal energy pile application is used in conjunction with additional closed loop boreholes to provide the required energy capacity for a structure. Interestingly the report concludes that the geothermal energy piles had a better heat transfer performance than the borehole field. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)’s Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) recently developed a series of models using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study gas distribution around a continuous mining machine with various fan-powered flooded bed scrubber discharge configurations in an exhaust curtain working face. CFD models utilizing species transport model without reactions in FLUENT were constructed to evaluate the redirection of scrubber discharge toward the mining face rather than behind the return curtain. The study illustrates the gas distribution in the slab (second) cut. The following scenarios are considered in this study: 100 percent of the discharge redirected back toward the face on the off-curtain side; 100 percent of the discharge redirected back toward the face, but divided equally to both sides; and 15 percent of the discharge redirected toward the face on the off-curtain side, with 85 percent directed toward the return curtain. These models are compared against a model with a conventional scrubber discharge where air is directed away from the face into the return. The models were validated against experimental data, proving to accurately predict sulfur hexafluoride (SF6 ) gas levels at four gas monitoring locations. This study includes a predictive simulation examining a 45° scrubber angle compared with the 23° angle for the 100 percent redirected, equally divided case. This paper describes the validation of the CFD models based on experimental data of the gas distribution results.

"Once every four years, the global mining industry gathers in Las Vegas, NV for MINExpo International. According to the show’s organizer, The National Mining Association (NMA), about 44,000 people attended the three-day show from Sept. 26-29. It was a show that featured the latest and greatest in equipment and technology. It also served as the backdrop for a snapshot of the state of the industry and while the picture of a global industry is never completely clear at any one time, one thing that is evident is technology has become a major force in the way mining is done.Had it not been for the awe-inspiring “iron” that was on the show floor in the form of haul trucks and shovels weighing hundreds of tons, one could be forgiven for thinking that they were at the Consumer Electronics Show. From training simulators designed to give a realistic experience of operating mining equipment to virtual reality technology that can take the user into the depths of an underground mine or the middle of a mapped ore deposit, an overriding theme of MINExpo 2016 was that the mining industry is connected like never before.In the north hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center was the GE Mining booth that was designed to showcase its efforts to help create a mine that will be connected from the front office to the face of the underground wall or bottom of the openpit. GE Mining called its booth a digital mine, and it included a suite of technologies that can improve performance, reliability, safety and operations. GE Mining said it views each mine as a mini-city, requiring power, water and transportation. Intelligent, real-time monitoring across the mine allows operators to make data-driven decisions that improve equipment reliability and optimize mine operations for substantial savings. And GE Mining was just one of many exhibitors showing off software that allows various types of equipment to communicate. Its booth sat in the shadow of the Komatsu booth with its new 360-t (400-st) 980E-4 haul truck that included GE’s 360-t (400-st) electric wheel motor. This is just one example of how technology is connecting machines, operations and people around the world and how mining is moving forward."

"Controlling float coal dust in underground coal mines before dispersal into the general airstream can reduce the risk of mine explosions while potentially achieving a more effective and efficient use of rock dust. A prototype flooded-bed scrubber was evaluated for float coal dust control in the return of a continuous miner section. The scrubber was installed inline between the face ventilation tubing and an exhausting auxiliary fan. Airborne and deposited dust mass measurements were collected over three days at set distances from the fan exhaust to assess changes in float coal dust levels in the return due to operation of the scrubber. Mass-based measurements were collected on a per-cut basis and normalized on the basis of per ton mined by the continuous miner. The results show that average float coal dust levels measured under baseline conditions were reduced by more than 90 percent when operating the scrubber. IntroductionAirborne coal dust is a byproduct of coal production, and engineering controls exist to deal with both the respirable dust health hazard as well as the float dust explosion safety hazard. Float coal dust, smaller than 75 µm (0.003 in.) in size, can deposit throughout mine entries and propagate explosions that had been initially fueled by methane gas. The inertization of float coal dust with rock dust helps prevent a potential secondary float coal dust explosion, but a preferable course of action is to significantly reduce the hazard by removing float coal dust from the airstream before it has the opportunity to deposit on the mine’s surfaces.Since 1970, disasters due to explosions in underground coal mines have caused 201 deaths in the U.S. mining industry, including 29 deaths in a single mine explosion in 2010 (Wade, 2010; U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2015). The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) had initiated a fiveyear research project that aims to investigate methods and technologies to reduce the potential for secondary coal dust explosions by the purposeful capture and/or suppression of float coal dust prior to its deposition on the mine roof, rib and floor (NIOSH, 2013). The project aims to evaluate the efficiency of methods to reduce longwall and belt airway float dust in the general airstream as well as methods to capture it at or near the source. Prioritization is given to longwall sections given the amount of coal produced relative to continuous miner sections, but the research is open to technologies that may be adapted from one method of mining to another."

"With up to 2,300 m (7,545 ft) of rock on top of it, the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which is scheduled to go into regular operation in December 2016 in the Swiss Alps, is not only the world’s longest, but also the deepest railway tunnel ever built. Accordingly, the temperatures in the tunnel are very high, with the surrounding rock expected to reach 45° C (113° F) once the tunnel is fully operational. Since unrestricted rail operations are only permitted in temperatures of 40° C (104° F) or less, the heat has to be controlled with suitable equipment. Large fans developed and built especially for this application by TLT-Turbo GmbH provide fresh air for regular operations as well as during maintenance and repair work. Separate fans ensure that the emergency exits are properly ventilated in case of fire. In addition to coming up with a technical solution that could handle the special challenges of this project, the engineers and planners had to develop detailed preliminary plans as well as a sophisticated logistics and installation concept.The Gotthard Base Tunnel consists of two 57-km (35-mile) long tubes, one in each direction. Including all connecting and access tunnels, the entire underground system measures 152 km (95 miles). At Faido and Sedrun, at approximately 16 and 36 km (9 and 23 miles) respectively, two multifunction stations were built that cut each of the two tubes into three sections of roughly equal length. Here, trains can make emergency stops and change tracks, if necessary. This is also where eight large axial fans made by TLT were installed that exchange the air, i.e. they extract a certain amount of heated air and inject the same amount of cool fresh air a few hundred meters further down the train tracks. In addition to the four exhaust and four supply fans, 24 so-called jet fans were installed along with associated components like silencers, shut-off dampers, drives and lubrication systems from TLT.In addition to exchanging the air, these fans are used to enable maintenance and repair operations in the tunnel. Current plans call for blocking each tunnel tube for one night per week in order to perform preventive maintenance work, thus enhancing the tunnel’s overall functionality and availability. During these hours, many people will be in the tunnel who require fresh air. “One of the major criteria for winning this bid was the fans’ ability to quickly switch between a wide-range of modes. TLT fans are among the best in the world in this regard,” said Andreas Kuhn, TLT’s project manager for the Gotthard Base Tunnel, about the selection of his company’s fans for this project."

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been regulated by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration since 2002 in underground metal and nonmetal mines. To demonstrate regulatory compliance, DPM samples must be collected and later analyzed by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 5040 standard method, but the FLIR Airtec DPM monitor can serve as a complementary engineering tool. The monitor is a handheld instrument that offers near-real-time measurements of elemental carbon (EC), which is a primary constituent of DPM. As part of an ongoing field study, the monitor was used to survey EC in an underground stone mine. This effort was aimed at determining spatial and temporal DPM variations in several key locations. The results of prolonged area monitoring—that is, lasting several hours — revealed that DPM concentrations were diluted substantially as air moved away from the primary production zone, but that concentrations could vary quite a bit in a single location from day to day and between seasons. DPM concentrations were generally lower in winter than in summer, which is consistent with increased natural ventilation airflows during winter. Using a modified sampling cassette, an attempt was also made to sensitize the Airtec monitor to allow for “spot-checking” of EC concentrations — that is, measurements made in several minutes. Preliminary field data showed that the sensitive cassette performed well in terms of providing accurate data that could be useful for rapid assessment of DPM. The World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer classified diesel exhaust, including DPM, as a carcinogen (World Health Organization, 2012). It is believed to cause and/or exacerbate respiratory illness upon inhalation, deposition and retention in lung tissue. Because DPM exists in both the micro- and nanoparticulate ranges, it can bypass typical autoimmune defense mechanisms that keep larger particles out of the respiratory system (Ristovski et al., 2012)."

"There is no fast way to add more than 6.4 km (4 miles) of track, most of it underground, to the Sound Transit Link Light Rail system in the Seattle, WA area. But increasingly busy traffic through a number of neighborhoods made it necessary. That’s the challenge a joint venture of several tunneling contractors faced when starting its portion of the $1.9-billion Northgate Link Extension in 2013, and the project is still keeping it busy three years later. Completion will mean just a 14-minute ride from Northgate to downtown for an extra 60,000 passengers by 2030. The transit lines will join 57 km (36 miles) of new and under-construction light rail lines running north, east and south from Seattle.Voters tired of long commute times approved the project, a key part of Seattle’s regional mass transit system, in 2008. The extension is part of a plan adopted by the Sound Transit board in 1996 to connect the region’s major activity centers. The Northgate project is meant to relieve one of the area’s most congested traffic areas by connecting the Northgate, Roosevelt and University District neighborhoods to existing routes including downtown Seattle and SeaTac airport.Sound Transit dedicated more than a quarter of the project’s estimated expense — $440 million -— to general contractor JCM Northlink LLC to handle the tunnel segment. JCM is a joint venture formed in 2013 between Jay Dee Contractors of Livonia, MI, Frank Coluccio Construction of Seattle, WA and Michels Corp. of Brownsville, WI. The contractors regularly collaborate on large-scale projects and brought experience working on a different section of the extension they completed in 2013.JCM project leaders knew immediately that the schedule would be demanding. They had to work around the clock six days a week to meet deadlines. The extension runs through highly populated areas, meaning contractors had to follow strict city noise restrictions between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Plus, supervisors needed to manage the scheduling of nearly 250 employees to keep work running smoothly.“We had eight different operations and four different subcontractors trying to work in one tunnel,” said Chris Wood, JCM site project superintendent. “It’s important that we keep work linear. That’s the biggest challenge: keeping a path in and out so you can pour concrete, keep electricians and carpenters going, and accomplish everything else.”"

"Since 1994 the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) has used risk analysis to evaluate dams. Risk considers both the likelihood of failure and the expected consequences should failure occur. Risk analysis relies on the detailed formulation and critical analysis of all possible potential failure modes. Potential failure modes are formulated by describing the sequence of events that must occur to result in failure, where failure is defined as the uncontrolled release of the impounded reservoir. Failure occurs in response to loadings such as water seepage through a dam (static forces), shaking from an earthquake (dynamic forces), sudden flood inflows (hydrologic forces), or accidental overfilling (operational errors). Reclamation has, to a limited extent, applied risk analysis to inactive and abandoned mines to evaluate tailings dams, pit lakes and flooded underground mines. Case histories of potential failure mode analysis, as applied to mine impounded water, illustrate what critical technical information is needed to determine if failure is likely, what the consequences of failure are likely to be, and what are the highest risks that should be addressed first.IntroductionImpounded water and high water content wastes at mining and industrial processing sites are potential threats to public safety and the environment. Recent failures such as the TVA Kingston flyash impoundment failure in Tennessee in 2008 (4.1 million m3 or 5.4 million cu yd) release, the Mt. Poly Tailings Dam failure in British Columbia in 2014 (4.4 million m3 or 5.8 million cu yd) release, and the Samarco Fundao Tailings Dam failure in Brazil in 2015 (59 millon m3 or 78 million cu yd) release have renewed attention to this issue. Potential risks from impounded water at mining and industrial sites originate not only from tailing dams, but also from water in process ponds and conveyance pipelines, sediment retention dams, water retention dams, mine pit lakes and flooded underground mine workings.Conventional water retaining dams also have a record of failure. Notable examples of failure include Vajont Dam in Italy in 1963 (2,600 lives lost), Banqiao and Shimantan Dams in China in 1975 (171,000 lives lost), and Machhu-II Dam in India (10,000 lives lost). After the 1976 Teton Dam failure in Idaho, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) established a Dam Safety Program. By 1984, the agency developed and began using risk analysis methods. BOR operates and maintains an inventory of hundreds of aging dams which were designed and constructed over a period of 100 years. Many of these facilities were designed and constructed prior to the development and adaptation of modern soil mechanics in dam engineering. Diligent observational monitoring, detailed site investigations and the application of risk evaluation to the BOR dam inventory has identified many deficiencies resulting in significant demands on available funding for remediation efforts. The application of risk analysis has allowed the agency to rank sites by risk. By giving priority of remedial efforts to high-risk sites, significant improvements to dam safety have been achieved."

"Speakers and attendees of the 2016 Cutting Edge Conference could not be faulted for keeping one eye on the presentations taking place at the Hyatt Regency at LAX in Los Angeles, CA on Nov. 7 and 8 and another on the results of the historic election in the United States that took place on Nov 8. While there was certainly interest in the presidential campaign, there was also a great deal of interest in Measure M on the California ballot. Measure M, which passed easily, is a half-cent sales tax increase that will fund the most ambitious transit expansion in Los Angeles County history.In the coming years, the ballot measure will transform a traffic-choked region by funding the construction of nearly a dozen new rail lines with an estimated $120 billion raised in four decades. Among the projects that could come to fruition are a twin-rail tunnels project through the Sepulveda Pass and new connections in the city.During the update on West Coast projects, Bill Hansmire summed things up with a slide asking “How much work is there on the West Coast,” and his answer was “Billions.”From Seattle, WA south to Los Angeles, there is already a lot of work for tunneling and underground construction experts, and Measure M ensures that there will be plenty of work for decades to come.Currently, The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has three rail projects underway that were funded by Measure R in 2008 — the Regional Connector, the Purple Line subway extension and the Crenshaw/LAX Line that are designed to alleviate the traffic pressure with an eye to more solutions.Measure M is the fourth sales tax increase to fund transportation in L.A. County, bringing the base sales tax rate to 9.25 percent. In some cities, which already levy their own sales tax, the rate would be higher, The Los Angeles Times reported.About 35 percent of the revenue will fund major new transit projects, such as the subway under the Sepulveda Pass, extension of the Gold Line to Claremont, extension of the Crenshaw Line to West Hollywood and acceleration of the Purple Line Subway construction along Wilshire Boulevard to finish in 2024, 10 years earlier than scheduled.About 17 percent would fund a dozen highway improvement projects, such as widening parts of I-5 in the Antelope Valley and southeastern county, adding bus lanes to the Sepulveda Pass section of the 405 freeway and adding truck-only lanes to a section of the 710 freeway."

"The availability of real-time data in any process control system is critical for effective management of that system. At MMG LXML Sepon Copper Operation in Lao PDR, controlling the copper grade of the feed to the leaching circuit is paramount for maximising both productivity and copper recovery. Since 2008, real-time analysis data has been available to the process engineers from the Geoscan on-belt analyser installed on the Copper Mill feed conveyor, and highly accurate results on copper grade have allowed the process engineers to strictly control blending to overcome the variability in plant feed grade. The availability of real-time analysis data is crucial, as effective sampling of this stream is both difficult and error-prone, being only a snapshot in time of highly variable ore stockpiles, as well as having significant laboratory turnaround delays. Periodic sampling is used to verify the Geoscan data as accurate. Since its installation, the copper result has been the most critical output of the Geoscan. In recent times, the process engineers have sought to utilise other results from the Geoscan to further improve and control the process. One measurement of particular interest involves the real-time measurement of calcium and magnesium as a gauge of ore feed gangue acid consumption. To satisfy this end, accurate measurement of calcium and magnesium is becoming increasingly more important and has been the subject of ongoing collaboration between Sepon and Scantech, the manufacturer of the Geoscan.
