IT is essential to the success of any mining op::ration that the roadways through which the material wrought and ocher materials and supplies are to be transported should be kept in such condition that this transportation cart be effected rapidly and without difficulty. The longer the roadway and the greater the tonnage to be taken over it, the more necessary it becomes chat the construction and maintenance of the road be such chat traffic delays can be reduced co a minimum. le is proposed co deal with the development and construction of roadways serving longwall operations and, since a recreating system of longwall is worked, as a rule, only where roadways driven in the solid coal can be readily maintained, the discussion will be confined co advancing longwall roads which are driven through areas from which the coal seam has been totally extracted. In order to construct a roadway through extracted ground in such a manner that it will remain in a state of reasonably good repair without undue maintenance, it is necessary chat everything possible be done to bring the overlying strata co a state of equilibrium as quickly as this can be effected, and the operations should be so planned that future workings will not disturb the equilibrium so set up more than can be avoided. Obviously, the readiest way to obtain a stable roadway is to develop it by tunnelling through a settled waste. However, this cannot always be done, as some of the roadways must be developed and constructed as the walls progress, but level or lateral cut-offs can be constructed in this manner. Main-slope roads can be developed in a similar manner after the coal has been extracted and a waste formed for at !east five hundred feet on either side of the line of the permanent roadway from temporary subsidiary roads developed for this purpose along one or other of the flanks of the waste to be formed. This interval must be obtained in order chat the lacer extraction of the seam will not set up movements in the waste immediately overlying or adjacent to the constructed roadway, thus upsetting the equilibrium of the strata and distorting the road.

"Tunneling through an urban environment carries many inherent risks to the immediate local infrastructure and subsequently to the project stakeholders. On the CQ031 Contract of the East Side Access Project in Queens, New York, twin 22.5’ diameter Herrenknecht Slurry TBMs were mined within close proximity to many infrastructure assets, with cover of less than half a shield diameter at times. Multiple public bridges and critical railroad infrastructure including catenary poles and signal towers supporting the busiest rail interlocking in the United States required underpinning systems. The support program for these structures was refined over the course of the four tunnel drives. It is the intent of this paper to show how the interaction between the temporary structures, instrumentation monitoring plan, and risk assessment program melded to provide a system which the owner, contractor, and designer relied on as a tool to ensure the project success without impacting the public surroundings. PROJECT BACKGROUND The East Side Access (ESA) megaproject located in New York City, N.Y is a multi billion dollar program for the Metropolitan Transit Authority Capital Construction (MTACC) with the main goal of bringing the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) commuter rail to Grand Central Station located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. When completed, the project will significantly reduce congestion both into and out of Penn Station, the current terminus of the LIRR. In order to accomplish this, multiple contracts of varying scope are required to operate simultaneously in both Queens, N.Y and Manhattan. In 2009, the CQ031 Queens Bored Tunnels Contract was awarded to the joint venture of Granite Construction Northeast, Traylor Bros. Inc., and Frontier Kemper (G.T.F). The main scope of this contract was to excavate four segmentally lined soft ground tunnels underneath the Sunnyside Rail Yard in Queens, New York. Additional scope of work included the construction of a tunnel approach structure, electrical substation, and multipurpose ventilation and egress facility."

The purpose of the atlas is threefold: First, from available date the general potentialities of the Black Hills region can be determined, although it is not possible to calculate actual ore reserves; second, it will provide the necessary basic information regarding a given property or commodity for further detailed study; and third, the compilation is a comprehensive directory of Black Hills deposits.

This paper presents various design and construction considerations involved in developing an underwater installation of lined, large diameter shafts not known to have been previously accomplished for the diameter size, depth or ground conditions identified with the Seabrook Power Station. Outlined approach provides for driving tunnels independent of shaft sinking operation, permits the use of prefabricated shaft lining and incorporates a safe dry tap method for connecting the shafts to the tunnels. INTRODUCTION The Seabrook Power Station, located two miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean, at Seabrook, New Hampshire, is a two unit, nuclear powered, electric generating plant, each unit having a capacity of 1150 megawatts (electric). Typical to all steam driven generators is the requirement for large quantities of water. Requirements for the Seabrook Plant will be met by intaking and discharging approximately 850,000 gpm of ocean water at a considerable distance from the shore line in water depths that render the environmental impact inconsequential. Obtaining, conveying and discharging such large quantities of water represents a major undertaking, particularly under today's environmental controls. Tunnels are well suited to reducing the environmental impact at the Seabrook site by conveying the water about 250 feet deep under the salt marsh (a valuable ecological feature) and under the beach well out into the ocean without any noticeable ground surface disturbance. "In June 1985, Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME) was established. During the past 30 years, various major achievements are made in the discipline of rock mechanics and rock engineering field, especially in the last ten years. This paper will discuss the main rock engineering progress in association with China National Science and Technology Awards, “973 Program”, and “Tan Tjongkie Lecture”. The current status of rock engineering in China and some hot problems are summarized. Furthermore, some suggestions are given for addressing those problems. INTRODUCTIONThe modern concept of rock mechanics and engineering was initiated and developed after the Second World War. In this regard, the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) was established in 1962, subsequently further promotes its development. In June 1985, the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering was established. Various chief scientists, including professors Tan Tjangkie, Pan Jiazheng, Sun Jun, Wang Sijing, Qian Qihu, have made their huge efforts to the development of Rock Mechanics and Engineering in terms of the large-scale rock engineering projects in China.The achievements in the last 30 years significantly promote the development of China in different fields, such as energy, transportation, national defense and other national economy and major infrastructure facilities (Wang et al. 2004; Qian 2010, 2011). In other words, these projects also promoted the science and technology progress in rock mechanics and engineering across the world. Reviewing and analyses of the experiences on those key rock projects are beneficial to its technological development. She and Dong (2013), in view of literature statistical analysis, discussed the status and research progress in rock mechanics field associated with the last 30-year China's developments, including the rock strength and deformation theory, rock fracture and damage mechanics, the constitutive relation of rock dynamics, rock field coupling, rock reinforcement and stability analysis, etc. The challenging issues in rock mechanics were also proposed, which are the main concerns in rock engineering practices, engineering exploration, design, construction and operation."

Underground coal mines in the United States are in the process of completing installations for tracking and communication systems, mandated by Congress after a number of recent coal mine disasters. Yet, evaluation, modelling and testing of such systems has lagged due to legislated changes, abruptly introduced into the coal mining industry. System installation in a wide array of mine types, configurations, layouts and characteristics has provided a wealth of information regarding their potential in underground environments. Data collected from numerous installations for a variety of systems can be used to further define true capability and accuracy of communication and tracking packages. This paper describes a uniform means of evaluating the performance of a communication and tracking system. Several performance measures are proposed and described. These measures can also be predicted using an interactive software program. This program predicts the signal propagation, given the input mine characteristics and layout, with numerical and visual feedback. New or alternative system installations can also be more accurately designed to potentially minimise initial system cost and time required for trial and error installs. The focus of this research is to develop tools and protocols that can evaluate and measure the effectiveness of installed underground communication and tracking systems.

"The case is presented for the use of simulators for the computer-based training (CBT) of mining plant operators and for introducing them to automatically controlled systems. As well as their use in the classroom, the role of simulators is examined for ""on-plant"" use in trouble-shooting, fault-finding and maintenance of automatic systems. Case studies are presented showing how specific simulators are becoming established or have potential in the areas of automated materials handling, machine testing, setup and guidance. The evolution of scientific simulations into simulators of widespread practical use is discussed and present-day limitations of computer speed and graphics are considered. Related areas of research for the Canadian Centre for Automation and Robotics in Mining (CCARM) are identified.IntroductionCCARM's Commitment to Simulator DevelopmentAs automation is progressively developed and exploited in mining operations, there arises an urgent need to educate and train staff responsible for its introduction and operation in our mines and for its maintenance. For this purpose , an essential ingredient of an automation program is the development of appropriate mining system simulators for use by a wide variety of personnel. The author has been fortunate to have been closely involved with the development of automatic control systems for a variety of mining machines and mining systems in the United Kingdom. A key ingredient of the research phase in each case has been the use of simulation techniques. As projects have moved toward their commissioning and exploitation phase, the simulations have evolved into simulators tailored for use by machine operators and maintenance personnel. Illustrative case studies are presented later. The researach of the newly constituted Canadian Centre for Automation and Robotics in Mining (CCARM) will likewise involve extensive simulation, and the development of simulators (from the scientific programs) for use at the mine by operators and technicians will be given high priority in the Centre's over-all work program."

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the structural aspects of shafts and support systems using the finite-element technique. In situ field measurements in deep, vein-type metal mines show that rock stresses are often higher in the horizontal direction than the vertical, and unequal in the horizontal plane. These data and laboratory and field-determined physical properties were used as input to analytical studies. Various design and construction parameters were investigated to deter-mine the effect on shaft stability. Rectangular shafts were studied in detail to determine the effects of applied stress ratio, shaft orientation and dimension, influence of interbedded quartzite and argillite, and rock fracturing. Various support systems were analyzed, including concrete lining, timber, and steel sets. Circular configurations were investigated to evaluate yield zones and liner thickness. Elliptical shafts and time effects were briefly evaluated to illustrate shape and time effects and demonstrate the methodology. It is shown that the magnitude, direction, and ratio of applied stress and rock mass anisotropy are keys to determining shaft stability. A realistic conceptual framework was developed with which to examine the rock and support interaction in deep mine shafts. Structural analysis techniques overcome some of the historical difficulties with shaft de-sign by defining the field data requirements and structural sensitivity of various design and construction parameters.

"Numerical simulations are widely adopted in the design of several types of rock structures, including tunnels, caverns, rock cuts, and open pit and underground mines. In recent years, analyses based on the hybrid finite-discrete element method (FDEM) have been shown to provide a realistic representation of rock mass deformation and fracturing processes. To date, the FDEM approach has successfully yielded qualitative and quantitative results for several practical rock engineering applications, yet it has lacked the ability to consider the implementation of rock-reinforcement measures. Since rock reinforcement is often used in civil and mining applications to improve the strength and deformational behaviour of a rock mass, the ability to incorporate such features into FDEM analyses is essential to extend its applicability to a broader range of problems. The work presented in this paper represents an important first step towards developing a simulation tool that can be used for practical rock engineering applications, including the design of underground excavations and rock slopes.INTRODUCTIONRock support and reinforcement measures are often employed in civil and mining rock engineering projects in order to maintain or improve the strength and deformational behaviour of rock masses. The preferred type of reinforcement or support elements along with the preferred layout and timing of installation depend on the in-situ ground conditions, the nature of the rock mass and excavation method. Over the last two decades, numerical modelling has been increasingly used to design and attempt to optimize rock reinforcement and support systems. As such, most rock engineering-specific modelling software now offers various approaches for modelling different rock reinforcement and support elements."

The effects of the operating parameters of media filling ratio, solid mass fraction, grinding media size and grinding time on the stirred media milling of talc were studied. The findings were assessed based on the product particle size (d50, d10), surface area (Sw) and energy consumption (Em). Furthermore, after determining the optimum grinding conditions, Box-Behnken statistical design was used to determine the effect of parameter interactions on the d50 size. The media filling ratio significantly affects d50 size decrease compared with solid mass fraction and grinding time. The minimum d50 size was also achieved under optimum grinding conditions.

The Principality of Asturias is a region situated in Northern Spain with two centuries of tradition in underground coal mining. In addition, its uneven relief has obliged the construction of a great number of tunnels both for railways and roads. Basing on this experience and an ever increasing need to improve on safety, the Barredo Foundation dependent on the Regional Government and the University, provides and manages a Centre for Research of Fires and Ventilation in Tunnels. The Centre has as its most important infrastructure, a tunnel 540 m long, 9,5 m wide and 8,0 m high at centre. This section coupled with ventilation equipment allows the simulation of risk conditions at real scale, which is achieved by modifying the geometry of the section and through two powerful stations situated one at either en of the tunnel. In addition, the Centre houses two test benches for fans and electrical motors at high temperatures. One bench with a re-circulation conduit is the most appropriate for tests in Transversal and Semi-transversal type of installations. The other, is for the testing of electrical motors or fans which operate in zones where the surrounding temperature is high. In this Centre, training has also been developed for Fire Fighters and Civilian Protection Personnel who have to work in fire and smoke rescue conditions in underground structures. Testing conducted at real scale enables this formation and also to improve different computer programmes in the field of Fires and Ventilation.

The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) is a practical rock mass classification system for use in design of mine openings. Data can be obtained for this purpose from exploration drill cores if simple geotechnical logging and rock mechanics testing is conducted. The CMRR is an excellent method to quantify rock characteristics for engineering purposes. It bridges the gap between geologic description and engineering design. The CMRR was utilized in the design of a 10,000 fl. long coal belt conveyor tunnel connecting an Eastern Associated Coal Corp. mine and preparation plant in Boone County, West Virginia. Data gathering and analysis techniques are discussed involving the calculation of the CMRR and its application in the design of the tunnel, which was driven through a thin coal bed zone. The preliminary findings have correlated well with actual roof and mining conditions encountered during driving the tunnel and it is concluded the CMRR is an effective method to utilize geologic data from exploration core holes for engineering analysis and design.

The Derby and Alexander Claim, located within the Tunnel Ridge Wilderness Study Area (WSA), has placer gold resources. No lode deposits are known within the area, but lode gold deposits are found within 1 1/2 mi of the WSA. In additon, rock units which contain lode gold deposits north of the WSA are found within the northern portion of the study area. INTRODUCTION The Tunnel Ridge Wilderness Study Area (WSA), CA-030-402, encompasses 4,623 acres of BLM administered public land in Trinity County, California, about 35 mi west-northwest of Redding (fig. 1). Major access to the Tunnel Ridge vicinity is by U.S. Highway 299. Ac-cess to the WSA boundary is by a secondary paved road from Junction City and several light duty dirt and gravel roads (fig. 2). The WSA is on the southwest slope of Weaver Bally Mountain. The topography is rugged with moderate to steep slopes; elevations range from about 1,600 ft to 5,900 ft.

With the advent of faster micro-processors, the use of numerical methods to simulate complex fluid dynamic phenomena in three dimensions for use in design has become prevalent in the automotive, and turbo-machinery industries. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method divides the region of interest into small control volumes which form the mesh representing the physical characteristics of the problem, and uses the finite volume method to intergrate the equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and species over each control volume. Recent developments in CFD software expedite mesh generation, and enable the use of unstructured grids, comprised of tetrahedral volumes in three dimensions and triangular areas in two. CFD more accurately represents complex geometries and allows for relative movement of meshes enabling simulation of multiple moving bodies. 'ibis paper presents two examples of how CFD simulation can be used to assess mine and tunnel ventilation problems formerly addressed by application of analytical solutions which were developed assuming ideal incompressible conditions. CFD simulation is used to evaluate the impact of varying the airflow in a descentionally ventilated airway on the layering along the roof of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire. Control of the smoke layer is required to enable safe egress from the vehicle, particularly if the vehicle is for personnel transport, and to ensure control of the fire contaminants throughout the ventilation system. The airflow required to prevent layering against the ventilation direction, calculated from the Bakke and Leach relations (Bakke and Leach, 1962), is compared with the CFD simulation results. An evaluation of the pressures, generated as a vehicle enters a tunnel portal, using CFD simulation, is also presented for unflared and flared portal configurations. These simulation results are compared with predictions derived using an analytical method which assumes one-dimensional and incompressible flow. Results of the CFD simulation are presented in an animated video format. SIMULATION OF BACKLAYERING In designing a ventilation system for a transit tunnel, the ability of the ventilating air to control and prevent backlayering of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire is of prime concern. The buoyant nature of hot smoke causes it to rise relative to the colder, fresh air provided by the ventilation system. If the vehicle fire occurs in a descentionally ventilated tunnel, the smoke may tend to move upgrade in a layer above the incoming ventilation airflow. The layer may become thick enough to engulf a substatntial part of the tunnel cross-section upgrade of the incident that comprises the evacuation route. This effect is termed "backlayering' and it is similar to the development of methane layers in mines for which most studies related to backlayering have been done. Prediction Techniques Analytical A number of studies have been conducted (Bakke and Leach, 1962) to define the characteristics of this phenomena and as a result have produced relations which are used both in the mine and transit ventilation fields to define the air velocities required to control layering. In the transit industry the air velocity required to prevent the backlayering phenomena from occuring during a vehicle fire is called the "critical velocity" (Associated Engineers, 1975) and is dependent upon a number of factors: tunnel height, cross-sectional area and grade; ambient air temperature and density; and the heat release rate of the fire. Common practice in transit ventilation design is to provide an airflow which meets or exceeds the critical velocity. In order to determine whether or not the critical velocity can be achieved with a particular ventilation system, a one-dimensional simulation of the tunnel network is typically performed using programs such as the Subway Environment Simulation program (SES) originally developed in the late 1970's (Associated Engineers, 1980). The results obtained from SES are compared to the critical velocity to determine the adequacy of the ventilation system. Computational Fluid Dynamics For the backlayering simulations, a commercial CFD code which has been used successfully in a wide variety of engineering applications, was used. It provides numerous options for modeling laminar and turbulent flows, multiple turbulence models, definition of multiple species and chemical reactions between them, a variety of boundary conditions (including constant pressure and constant velocity inlets) and the ability to apply user-defined FORTRAN subroutines. It includes the ability to model conductive, convective, and radiative heat transfer. FLUENT also permits the use of "body-fitted coordinates" to match the computational mesh or grid to complex real-world geometries. Computational Fluid Dynamics Model The model developed to simulate the backlayering phenomena is comprised of an airway of rectangular cross-section, 4 meters wide, 4.5 meters high, and 200 meters long. I. INTRODUCTION. THIS old and once famous district played, through its enormous production of silver and gold, an important part in the history of the State of San Luis Potosi. According to a pamphlet prepared under the direction of the Governor of the State, Sr. Don Blas Escontria, and presented to the visiting members of the Institute during the Mexican meeting of 1901, this district is situated 20 km. east of the city of San Luis Potosi, in a range of mountains of moderate height, extending 135 km. N. and S., and 16 km. E. and W.; and the mineralized area hitherto developed is about 600,000 sq. m. The history of the district,. as given by the record dated 1778, and formerly kept in the San Francisco convent, says that it was discovered in 1575 by Sr. Don Pedro Irarte, and adds that the city of San Luis Rey de Francisco del Potosi received its name (in allusion to the famous Potosi mines in Bolivia) by reason of the remarkable productiveness of its gold- and silver-mines in the first period of their exploration, during which they paid to the Crown, as " quintos " (the fifth part of the product), $97,000,000, as appears from the accounts of the royal treasury. The amount of the quientos paid during the " bonanza period " of 80 years was $72,000,000. The larger sum first mentioned probably represents a longer series of years. But either will suffice to indicate the great wealth of the mines. INTRODUCTION East Side Access (ESA) Contract CQ028 is located in the New York City Borough of Queens. The contract involves construction of a 230-meter (760-foot) long open-cut excavation with a permanent deck supporting Amtrak yard tracks over a semi-circular TBM launch wall on the east end, and the 36.5-meter (120-foot) long Northern Blvd. Crossing on the west end. The Northern Boulevard Crossing will be mined under an existing New York City Transit (NYCT) five-track subway tunnel; Northern Boulevard, a heavily traveled five-lane truck route; and an existing NYCT three-track elevated line; connecting to an existing open-cut shaft adjacent to the existing 63rd Street Tunnel bellmouth. When completed, Contract CQ028 will provide access for future Manhattan and Queens tunnel contracts. The footprint of the open-cut was determined by the geometric requirements of the future Plaza Interlocking facility to be constructed within in another future ESA contract. See Figure 1. This paper discusses design risk mitigations for the key elements of the contract, namely the Northern Blvd. Crossing and the semi-circular TBM Launch Wall. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company—East Side Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road will provide Long Island commuters with direct access to Manhattan’s East Side via a new rail line between the Harold Interlocking in Queens and Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The project connects the unused lower level of the existing tunnel under the East River at 63rd Street to new connecting tunnels in Queens and Manhattan. This paper describing the mining practice at the Harmony mine, Baker, daho, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. About 150 tons of copper ore containing 4 per cent copper, 0.001 ounce gold, and 0.1 ounce silver, is being produced daily from the Harmony mine by the shrinkage method of mining. The ore is taken by an aerial tramway 1/3 mile long to the mill, where it is concentrated. The concentrate is shipped 8 miles by truck to the railroad and thence by rail to Utah for smelting.

Case histories of water problems in underground mine shafts and tunnels are outlined to illustrate varying degrees of sophistication in grouting techniques currently applied in such construction. The interception of water underground can be one of prior knowledge, i. e., the site investigation provides necessary data to plan a grouting program prior to construction start, or excavations may encounter "changed conditions" or unplanned water. The latter includes catastrophic inflows and emergency situations where the structural integrity of a building or concrete shaft lining are jeopardized. The presentation of this paper outlines some applications of grouting work in underground mine construction throughout the United States in a variety of geological provinces and for a variety of minerals.

The Panama Metro System’s Network expansion involves excavating a launching shaft for a tunnel boring machine (TBM) to traverse beneath the Panama Canal. The blasting needed for this shaft construction poses significant challenges due to the presence of concrete walls encircling the excavation. These walls must remain intact throughout construction and the tunnel's future operation. This case study is focused on devising and implementing safe blasting techniques crucial for the shaft's construction, ensuring the preservation of surrounding concrete walls and project equipment. As the interest was potential damage to the concrete walls, an appropriate vibration threshold for this project was also required as an alternative to the traditional U.S. Bureau of Mining RI-8507 limit (USBM RI8507). Blast modeling software was employed to conduct a series of blasting simulations. Parameters like hole diameter, spacing, depth, explosive type, and initiation methods were varied to evaluate their potential effects on wall stability and damage risk. The simulations revealed that smaller diameter holes and reduced spacing between blast holes would effectively mitigate the risk of wall instability. Additionally, utilizing electronic delay detonators and carefully planning the blast hole detonation sequence proved critical in minimizing potential damage. Executing these blasts in the field presented unique challenges, including strict charge per delay thresholds and logistical constraints. Consequently, continuous adjustments to blasting parameters were made and comparative result analysis. Beyond providing a safe blasting strategy for the TBM launching shaft, this study offers invaluable insights into adapting blasting designs to align with environmental and structural safety standards. These findings hold great potential to shape guidelines for analogous sensitive construction projects. They underscore the importance of leveraging prior research as a reference point, engaging with project designers and local authorities, and continually conducting testing and adjustments to ensure project success.
