The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted experiments on the use of lightweight concrete in the density range of 100 Ib/ft3 for liners in underground mines. Three test sections were completed: a monolithic, portal-type structure with integral walls and arch constructed aboveground; an underground test section constructed in a mine drift using plywood forms; and a second section constructed in a drift using an air-supported formwork. The lightweight concrete in the two underground test sections was placed using piston pumps and a slickline. Fiber reinforcement was added to the concrete in the mine sections without any apparent problems with either pumping or placement of the concrete. In another experiment, the Bureau and Hecla Mining Co., Mullan, rD, used lightweight concrete in the density range of 25 Iblfe to replace timber blocking in a raise preparation structure. Other experiments are described in which low-density, lightweight concrete blocks were produced for mine ventilation doors, stoppings, and barricades. Other mine uses reviewed include pillars and collapsing beams. An advantage of low-density concrete is that it will display up to 50% deformation at a constant yield stress. These hlllovative concepts in deformable concrete lining systems will aid mine operators by decreasing capital and maintenance costs, increasing the available space in underground haulageways, and providing productivity gains and improved resource recovery in the soft, caving, squeezing, or bursting grollnu conditions often found in deep mines.

INTRODUCTION Volcanic tuffs on and adjacent to the Nevada Test Site (NTS) are being considered by the Department of Energy (DOE) for the possible geo- logic disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. The Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations (NNWSI) project was established in 1977 to evaluate such disposal. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), one of the participants in the NNWSI project, has as one of its responsibilities the development of a rock mechanics program for the Nevada site. SNL conducted three small-diameter heater experiments in welded and nonwelded tuffs in G-Tunnel on the NTS, to investigate the thermal (heat transfer) and hydrothermal (thermal- induced water migration) behavior as part of the rock mechanics program. These two aspects were investigated to increase knowledge about the behavior of tuff so that predictive capabilities are available for use by repository designers, waste-package designers, and performance analysts. Also, knowledge of the behavior of the tuff is invaluable for planning and designing future in situ experiments at Yucca Mountain, the candidate site for the repository. The evaluations of these three experiments is the subject of this paper. Designers, analysts, and experimenters are seeking a better understanding of the behavior of tuffs under the influence of thermal loads expected from radioactive-waste storage, because of two physical features peculiar to tuffs. First, tuffs are inherently porous because of the manner in which they are deposited (Smith, 1960). Tuffs utilized in G-Tunnel testing have porosities ranging from 15 to 46%, which cover the ranges of expected porosities in the target horizon at Yucca Mountain. It has been established that the G-Tunnel tuffs have similar bulk, thermal, and mechanical material properties to those at Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984), thus, G-Tunnel testing can be used to evaluate the effects of porosity on the thermal and mechanical behavior. The second feature is that tuffs above the water table contain pore water that influences the thermal properties of the rock; displacement of the water must be accounted for in repository designs and analyses. For example, G-Tunnel tuffs, located some 600 m above the static water level, have saturations in excess of 60%. Similar percentages are expected at the target horizon in Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984). The presence of and the removal of the pore water affects the thermal behavior of the tuffs, and these three experiments were designed first to determine the phenomenological behavior and then assess influences on predictive capabilities. The focus in this paper is to present the results and evaluations of the experiments as they apply to improving predictive capabilities. The thermal aspects are emphasized by comparing the measured temperatures (in and around heater emplacement holes) with calculations of predicted temperatures using numerical models, so that the effects of significant parameters can be evaluated and integrated into future predictive models. Observation of the hydrothermal aspects is needed to assess the effects of loss of pore water and subsequent migrations on the temperature fields during the heating, and also to define the expected environment in the vicinity of the outer metallic surface around the waste. The metallic boundary can be either the outer shell of the waste package system, which is the main engineered barrier for waste containment, or the borehole liner. A final decision has not been made as yet about the necessity for lining boreholes; thus, the emphasis is on predicting the characteristics of the environment around the outer metallic surface. The Table Mountain copper deposit is in an isolated portion of north-eastern Churchill County, Nev. Although copper-bearing outcrops have been known to exist in the area since 1909, no copper ore has been mined. Development of the property has been hampered by poor roads and rugged topography. Until 1941, the last 4 or 5 miles to the property had to be traveled either by foot or pack animal. As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a project was started at the Table Mountain deposit. The Bureau began its field work on July 29, 1947, and completed it on October 18, 1948. Thirteen holes aggregating 2,711 linear feet, were drilled; samples were analyzed - 509 from cores and 143 from sludges. This report contains a brief history of the district and a description of the geology, deposits, and drilling done by the Bureau.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of laboratory experiments to test a cutting technique for hard rock using large-scale drag cutters. Cutting experiments were performed on rocks ranging in compressive strength from 10,000 to 27,000 Ib/in2, using large drag cutters from 3 to 6 in. in width. The tests were conducted on a special test apparatus, called a ripper tester, which made a curvilinear cut across the rock sample while measuring the cutting force acting on the drag cutter. The cutting method that evolved from these experiments is called ripper cutting, and its energy efficiency appears superior to all other large-scale mechanical fragmentation techniques. In addition, the method cre-ated very little dust, and the wear on the bits was negligible. A fragmentation system based on ripper cutting was then devised, and a large-scale test device was fabricated to allow full-scale laboratory testing of the system. The results of these tests will be published in future Bureau reports.

Modem mineral processing plants handle large amounts of ore and produce large tailing streams. Plant performance can be optimized when the water is quickly recovered with a thickener. The caisson thickener was developed to overcome process and mechanical problems with the conventional traction and center column units. The caisson is a hollow center column that serves as a pump house. The rake arm structure is supported by a hydrostatic bearing which sits on top of the caisson. The caisson thickener with a hydrostatic bearing has operated for many years in several mineral processing applications.

Glencore’s Nickel Rim South Mine, located in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, is a primary/secondary blasthole operation with ore zones lying between 1,100 and 1,700 m below surface. One of the main benefits of the primary/secondary mining method in high stress ground is that up to 50% of the mining will take place in secondary stopes that should be in a yielded rock mass state. Every future secondary mining stope begins as a primary stope abutment pillar. As with many mines, the stress loading history and rock mass conditions can vary considerably in space and time. Safe mining practices cannot allow for an assumption that the planned secondary stopes are indeed yielded. An incorrect assumption can result in mining development and stoping taking place in high stress ground rather than the expected yielded rock mass conditions. This can result in higher levels of seismicity than expected and incorrect ground support recommendations in areas where workers could be exposed. Seismic monitoring is the mines’ premier tool to track the actual rock mass response to mining. Yielded zones have a reasonably clear seismic signature/pattern over time that is visible in the collected data. The ability to accurately locate small magnitude seismic events can help define and delineate different stages of rock mass failure. The vast majority of the seismic data recorded by the microseismic monitoring system is below moment magnitude (Mw) 0.0. Examples are provided showing how small seismic events (Mw < -1.5) can help provide feedback from the rock mass deformation that allows the ground control engineer to gain a better understanding of how the rock mass is responding to mining processes.

Linear cutting tests of a porous sandstone with a radial drag pick show that saturation of rock with water can increase the specific energy of fragmentation. This appears to be due, in this case, to a saturation-induced increase in the forces acting on the cutting tool without a concomitant increase of the fragmented volume. The mechanisms of this reaction are explored by examining various responses of the parameters controlled and induced during the linear cutting tests, such as cut spacing, cutter penetration, three-dimensional forces and muck production. A program of load-indentation testing is underway to evaluate the permeability threshold of this behavior. These findings are opposite from those made when the same rock is cut with a constant cross-section disc cutter reported elsewhere (Abu Bakar and Gertsch, 2011). Such results highlight the effects of different cutting tool designs, and indicate the need for a well-coordinated program of research to support effective excavator design and selection.

Twin bore running tunnels driven approximately 4,500 route feet by a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) EPB Tunnel Boring Machine link the West Portal and East Portal on this complex Light Rail Project. One third along the way, the TBM arrives at the Beacon Hill Station which is the deepest underground “binocular” station of its kind in North America and then “walks-across” the station to be re-launched on the other side to complete the drive. This paper discusses briefly the layout and design considerations but then focuses more deeply on the approach by the Contractor to drive and supply the tunnel. The paper addresses the approach used to launch, re-launch and recover the TBM and touches briefly on muck volume control and monitoring plus settlement monitoring and the performance achieved. Also of interest is a unique solution to a difficult launch situation involving a secant pile tieback wall designed with several rows of double I-beam steel walers spanning the eye at the West Portal under the I-5 freeway.

The work included an extensive information search, novel analyses in rock flow theory, cost and time estimation for shaft and raise construction methods, and development of design criteria for the are pass proper, dump point, and draw point.

Gold mining is a subject that not only appeals to the popular imagination but has vital importance to the world&apos;s economic structure. However, a discussion of the use of gold as a medium of exchange, and a basis for credit between nations and for monetary systems is not within the scope of this paper. The importance of gold in carrying on the commerce of the world, the present supply and rate of production, the probable trend of future production, the probable future requirements, and related subjects have recently received much attention from bankers and economists, and many articles on these subjects have been published. During slack periods of base-metal production due to falling prices, accompanied by scaling down of base-metal mining operations and often by the closing down of at least some mines, there usually result revival of interest in gold mining, search for previously undiscovered deposits, and reopening of some old gold mines.

The opportunity to make a close study of the available geologic data existing along the line of the California Aqueduct crossing of the Garlock fault in the Tehachapi Mountains was brought about first by my involvement in the prebid examinations, and later with contractors&apos; claim cases. The California Aqueduct crosses through the western end of the Tehachapi Mountains and cuts across the Garlock fault zone at a location about 9 miles east from its junction with the San Andreas fault zone. This is about 65 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 38 miles southeast of Bakersfield (Fig. 1) (1). This map was published after the tunnels were started and shows the corrected geology. At the crossing the fault has north and south branches which extend northeastward for about 22 miles before converging. In the vicinity immediately east of the tunnel line the north branch of the fault starts to converge toward the west. After crossing the line it passes under the upper plate of the apparent easterly extension of the Pastoria thrust fault, so the actual junction with the south branch is obscured. The aqueduct design called for the expected active slip zone of the north Garlock fault branch to be crossed by the 2,800 foot long Pastoria siphon, which connects with the north portal of Tehachapi Tunnel No. 3. The tunnel would extend through the western end of Genghus Ridge which lies between the north branch and the main south Garlock fault zone in Beartrap Canyon. Here again the

COAL MINING, with its some 15,000 employees, is directly responsible for the livelihood of one-fifth of the population of the Province of Nova Scotia and indirectly so for that of possibly another fifth. Deposits of coal are known and worked in four counties of the Province, from which is being produced yearly tonnages as noted below: Cumberland County 750,000 tons Piccou County 400,000 tons Inverness County 100,000 tons Cape Breton County 5,250,000 tons TOTAL FOR NOVA SCOTIA 6,500,000 tons Production in Cape Breton county is entirely from the one source, the Sydney coalfield, and not only is this field the most important in respect to output, as is disclosed above, but it is also the largest presently known deposit in the Province and holds the greatest tonnage yet in reserve for future mining. In the light of the above more or less generally known facts, it is trite to remark on the importance of the Sydney coalfield in the internal economy of the Province. On the other hand, not nearly as well-known nor as frankly recognized is its significance in the national life of Canada, for from this field is produced not only 80 per cent of the Nova Scotia coal but over 40 per cent of all coal mined in the Dominion. Another noteworthy comparison can be made from the fact that the Sydney field contributes 22 per cent of all the bituminous coal consumed in Canada, the remainder being made up of 7 per cent mined elsewhere in Nova Scotia, 27 per cent from other parts of Canada (British Columbia and Alberta, principally), while the remaining 44 per cent is imported, practically wholly, from the United States of America.

Since it was first introduced, the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) has been widely accepted as a tool for geologic characterization and mine planning. This paper discusses the application of the CMRR to another practical ground control problem. Extended cuts (cuts greater than 6 m (20 ft) in length) are commonly used with remote control continuous miners. Extended cuts can greatly increase productivity, but they have been associated with a number of fatal roof fall accidents. When extended cuts are attempted in weak roof, the roof may collapse before it can be bolted, causing hazardous conditions. Until now, it has not been possible to predict where conditions may not be suitable for extended cuts. In this study, data on the CMRR and extended cut experience were collected at 36 mines in 7 states. It was found that when the CMRR was greater than 55, deep cuts were routine in nearly every case. When the CMRR was less than 37, extended cuts were almost never taken. Between 38 and 55, extended cuts were feasible sometimes but not others. The data also shows that extended cuts are less likely to be stable if either the entry span or the depth of cover increases.

The Phase 2 of Chennai Metro is being introduced in the city to ease the dependence on the existing transportation systems. Phase 2 is a combination of underground and elevated metro stretches comprising of three corridors. The current study focusses on the underground stretch of Corridor 3 which has a total of 29 underground stations. Construction of the underground cut and cover stations results in ground movements, which in turn impact the structures adjacent to the excavations. The greenfield ground settlement can be evaluated with the help of empirical approach or an approach requiring finite element modelling (FEM). The paper compares empirical and FEM approaches with regards to ground conditions in Chennai. Further, with the predicted ground settlements, building damage assessment is performed. The damage category of a building is defined based on the estimated tensile strains. This paper also compares the building damage assessment with empirical method and finite element modelling.

The Galena mine is located astride the Polaris fault in the Coeur d&apos;Alene district of northern Idaho. The surface installations are about a mile up Lake Gulch, the mouth of which is about 2.4 km (1 112 miles) west of the old town of Wallace. The mine had its beginnings when the first claims were located in the early boom days of the district in the 1880s and when the first underground ore bodies were opened up in 1917. During the ensuing 14 years, ore was mined from which were recovered 5.4 Mkg (12 million lb) of lead and almost 14.2 Mg (112 million oz) of silver. Workings consisted principally of a vertical shaft from surface to the 800 level and an offset underground shaft to the 1600 level, together with extensive lateral openings. High-grade silver-copper ore was discovered near the Silver Standard fault in the Sunshine mine, a few miles to the west, on the 1700 level in 1930. By 1937, the Sunshine and adjacent mines were producing silver-copper ore on a regular basis. In 1943 additional ore of a similar type was found along the Chester fault, to the east of the principal Sunshine workings. The interest of American Smelting and Refining Co. (renamed ASARCO in 1975) was aroused and the company&apos;s geologists determined that the Galena mine, idle since 1931, provided a geological environment in which similar ore might be found. After negotiations were initiated with the owners of the property, Callahan Zinc-Lead Co., the property in question was deeded to Callahan&apos;s wholly owned subsidiary, Vulcan Silver-Lead.

This dictionary is published by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to the mining and mineral literature in the belief that it will fill a recognized need. Several attempts have been made over the years to revise Albert Fay&apos;s Glossary of the Mining and Mineral Industry which first appeared in December of 1918. Frank L. Hess of the Bureau of Mines worked on a revision, but his untimely death prevented its completion. Subsequently, the writer was employed to compile and edit this dictionary in cooperation with the technical staff of the Bureau of Mines. Fay&apos;s glossary contained about 18,000 terms with 27,000 definitions; the present compilation contains about 55,000 terms with approximately 150,000 definitions. These terms are of both a technical and local nature, and they apply to metal mining, coal mining, quarrying, geology, metallurgy, ceramics and clays, glassmaking, minerals and mineralogy, and general terminology. Petroleum, natural gas, and legal mining terminology, unless of a general nature, has been excluded, as has been foreign terminology where there is an English equivalent. Several thousand Spanish-American mining terms that appeared in Fay&apos;s compilation have been removed to make way for the thousands of new English terms that have evolved over the years. Those Spanish-American and Mexican terms still used in the Southwestern United States have been retained.

Cable bolts are emerging as the newest ?twist? for roof support in U.S. underground coal mines. For decades cable bolts installed in underground metal mines in the United States and Canada used cement-based grouts for anchoring. The cement anchoring process, because of the time and expense for installation, made cable bolts impractical for use in coal mines. Today, the introduction of resin-anchored cable bolts provides a system more consistent with tradi­tional U.S. coal mine roof bolting practices and requirements. Expecta­tions are that the utilization of cable bolts for a number of U.S. mining applications will expand, particularly in coal mining.

"The Didipio Gold-Copper project in the Philippines has been a well-defined reasonably high gold grade porphyry for almost two decades. OceanaGold are now bringing the project into production in late 2012 and have recently reoptimised the project with the goal of combining the inherent high grades with higher through-put than previously proposed that will see strong initial metal production. The project was discovered and well defined by 1995, but has seen some obstacles to development, namely sovereign risk, capital cost and project funding. The project strengths over this time that have kept the flames alive are: strong grades large orebody with low stripping ratios a simple beneficiation process and a clean high-grade concentrate strong support from the Philippines government.The initial study in 1998 used Gold and Copper price assumptions of $325/oz and $0.95&nbsp;lb respectively. Today reserves are based on $950 and $2.85. So, being a porphyry with a large reducing grade halo, the deposit now lends itself to extraction on a much larger scale than before, without any significant capital expenditure as a larger open pit now dominates the project.Didipio is a game changer for OceanaGold, so it has been important to learn from history and to capitalise on a strong initial metal production profile. The project sits in a reasonably remote mountainous area of Luzon which sees annual typhoons and numerous short duration high intensity rainfall events and two rivers flowing through the project area, so it has not been without some innovative technical solutions.CITATION:Redden, R, 2012. The Grasberg copper-gold deposit was discovered in Spring 1988, just one year prior to the planned closure of Freeport Indonesia&apos;s original Ertsberg open pit copper mine. In spite of Grasberg&apos;s remote location, 600m above the Ertsberg, atop a hitherto inaccessible mountain, Freeport-McMoRan brought their latest open pit mine into production in the last week of 1989, less than two years after discovery. This paper describes the start-up of the operation, highlighting synergies drawn from both the original Ertsberg experiences and the current Freeport Indonesia underground mines.
