Estimated reserves of high-grade iron ore at Serra dos Carajás total 16 billion metric tons and have an average grade of 66.7 percent iron, 2.2 percent combined silica and alumina, and 0.05 percent phosphorous on a dry basis. Hematite is predominant and no significant sulfur or other deleterious elements are present. Figure 1 illustrates the comparative magnitude of the Carajás reserves. Serra dos Carajás is located in northern Brazil, about 550 kilometers southwest of Belém, Pará. It is six degrees south of the equator between the Xingu and Tocantins Rivers. Both rivers flow northward toward the Amazon River. The greater part of the area is covered by thick jungle, and the most practical means of access is by air. Figures 2 and 3 show the location of Serra dos Carajás. Figure 4 shows the distribution of the major iron-ore deposits.

Thee Brightwater water treatment facilities, currently scheduled to be completed in 2010 and begin operating in 2011, will serve the northern part of King County, WA. The facility includes a new treatment plant and extensive conveyance system consisting of more than 21 km (13 miles) of influent and effluent conveyance tunnels and five portals. The majority of the conveyance system tunnels are mined by tunnel boring machines (TBM) and microtunnel boring machines (MTBM). Tunnel and portal construction is divided into three main contracts. The Ballinger Way receiving portal, constructed under the central tunnel contract, is the terminus for the BT-3 leg of the central contract and the BT-4 terminus of the west contract. The shaft has a 7.3-m (24-ft) finished inside diameter (ID) to accommodate removal of the central project TBM and the west contract TBM and extends to a depth of 66 m (216 ft) below grade through a complex and challenging soil profile characterized by multiple ground water tables. Vinci Grand Projects/Parsons/Frontier-Kemper Constructors (VCFK) was the joint venture team for the Ballinger Way portal. Frontier-Kemper was responsible for the shaft sinking. VCFK evaluated either slurry wall techniques or ground freezing for earth support during excavation of the portal and liner installation. The selection process took into account the vertical depth, cost, past practice, geology, water tables and a 9-m- (30-ft-) thick zone of contaminated soil at the top of the shaft. Ground freezing, which would also act as a hydraulic barrier, was deemed the better option for this project. The contract was awarded to New Jersey-based geotechnical contractor Moretrench. Typically, frozen walls, by design, key into an underlying cutoff. At the Ballinger Way portal, however, the [ ] freeze bottomed out in a substantially thick stratum consisting of predominantly clay, but with some inclusions of permeable soil that indicated significant ground water pressures. To ensure stable conditions at the bottom of the shaft, Moretrench, which also specializes in dewatering, designed and installed a perimeter array of deep wells to temporarily depressurize the permeable soils. The more important fires may he enumerated as follows: Forman Shaft fire., Gold Hill, April 21, 1903 ; shaft-house, machinery, and shaft, destroyed; loss estimated at $50,000.; Cause Unknown. Union Shaft fire, Virginia City, July 14, 1904; shaft-house, machinery, and shaft in part destroyed; loss estimated it $100,000; cause of fire stated as the careless throwing of a match in the rope-house. Sutro Tunnel fire, Virginia City, Jan. 27, 1909 ; 700 ft. of tunnel-timbering destroyed, and direct damage of $10,000; cause ' probably electric wires." This fire was caused by the short-circuiting and exploding of the starting-switch on No. 5 pump. The oil in the switch was scattered about and set fire to the timbers and laming of the pump-room. INTRODUCTION The Metropolitan Boston Transit Authority (MIA) Red Line has served greater Boston commuter needs from its Harvard Square terminus since its opening in 1912. Since then, the population of Boston's northwest area has increased substantially, and with this growth have come dramatic changes in the type and distribution of urban land uses, including the number of households, jobs, shopping and recreational opportunities; these changes have created a need for improved transportation. Extension of the Red Line to better serve these communities has been a topic of discussion for nearly 40 years. In November of 1977, the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) granted the MBTA approval and funding for the Red Line Extension Project. With funding in place, the MBTA proceeded with final engineering and construction of the section from Harvard Square to Alewife. When completed, the Red Line Extension will add 3.2 miles of new track to the MBTA system. Estimated final cost is about $400 million. On October 3, 1978, the MBTA received bids for the construction of Project 091-105, Harvard Square to Porter Square Tunnels and Shafts, which is part of the overall Red Line Extension. The Joint Venture of Morrison-Knudsen, White, Mergentime was the low bidder at $47,478,600. Official award of the contract came on October 25, 1978, with Notice to Proceed given October 31, 1978. Considerable controversy seems to exist over the extent and nature of information that should be provided in design-build type contracts. Much of this controversy may relate to the types of owners, ranging from private industry to state and federal agencies that are implementing design-build. Philosophies for the development of geotechnical information ranges from no information to a thorough investigation approaching that needed for final design. Several recent projects, such as the Channel Tunnel in Europe, Whittier Tunnel in Alaska, Tren Urbano in Puerto Rico, and Sound Transit in Seattle have taken varying approaches to providing and interpreting geotechnical information for bidders. The pros and cons of these various methods are discussed and assessed.

In recent years, the diminishing supply of natural gas has led energy suppliers and consumers to consider making synthetic natural gas from coal. A number of processes have been devised to produce gas from coal; many of these have been operated at the pilot stage and some have been operated commercially. Each process has specific coal feed stock requirements with respect to size consist and moisture content. The purpose of this presentation is to compare the estimated costs for coal handling, live storage, size reduction and drying facilities that would be required for delivery of coal feedstock to different gasification processes.

"The presence, size, orientation, nature, and persistence of geological discontinuities dictate the behaviour of a rock mass. Block size, which is defined by discontinuity spacing, by the number of joint sets, and by the persistence of the discontinuities delineating potential blocks is an important indicator of the degree of fracturing of a rock mass. Consequently, block size is represented either explicitly or implicitly in all rock mass classification systems employed for analysis and design of surface and underground mining structures. Insitu block size distributions may provide a better means to describe the structural complexity of a rock mass. These are the distributions that would be derived if the in-situ rock mass was separated into its constitutive blocks, delineated by existing discontinuities, and each block measured. This paper presents the results of a field campaign at Louvicourt Mine aiming to characterize the rock mass using different methods for determining block size and block size distributions. IntroductionGeological structural data are used to provide input data for analysis and design methods for surface and underground structures. As the collection of structural data involves considerable investment of time and effort, it is sometimes overlooked, thus denying an important source of information for mine design. What is somewhat surprising, however, is that when structural data are available, they are not used to their full potential. Recent work has shown that data on block size have potential applications in different areas of rock engineering:• Blasting — Hudson (1993) has described the excavation process as the change of a preexisting natural block size distribution to the debris fragment size distribution (Fig. 1). Lizotte and Scoble (1994) have reviewed previous efforts on integrating site specific geological conditions into blast design. Grenon et al. (1997) provide a case study where in-situ block size distributions are compared to photogrammetric studies of blasted rock.• Rock mass classifications — Block size is used in the majority of rock mass classification systems either explicitly, as in the RMi classification system Palmstrøm (1995), or implicitly, such as in the NGI system, Barton et al. (1974)."

In this paper we introduce a realistic model for mine openings that explicitly considers the effects of local irregular topography. Also, we consider the effect of entry orientation and rock anisotropy on the induced stress fields around mine openings under the given in-situ stress field. A triangular mesh formulation is derived for representing complicated irregular surface topography and underground openings. Each element contains three internal collocation nodes. Parts of the surface which are far from the mine openings are discretized by infinite elements. The rectangular infinite elements with three internal nodes are introduced specifically for this problem so they are compatible with the triangular elements. With the corresponding boundary element method (BEM) formulation, we then investigate the combined effect of the topography and entry orientation on the stress fields induced by openings in anisotropic rocks under in-situ stresses. A single rectangular opening in the anisotropic ground with topography and in-situ stresses is simulated using data from the Carroll Hollow mine in Ohio. The results of these simulations show that topography, rock anisotropy, orientation of the regional stress field and mine opening geometry all have appreciable effects on the stress fields around underground openings, yet these factors can all be accounted for in an efficient code with no need to discretize the model domain. Future applications using this new BEM formulation will provide useful guidance on selecting the optimal opening orientation in the mine in order to minimize undesirable stress concentrations around underground mine workings.

Foreword The complete history and early development of the Sullivan mine was fully covered in a paper entitled 'The Development of the Sullivan Mine and Processes for the Treatment of its Ores', prepared by the staff of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, and presented at the Annual Meeting of the British Columbia Division of the Institute at Trail in October, 1924. At a subsequent meeting at Blairmore, Mr. E. G. Montgomery read a paper on the mine, and in 1926 Mr. M. M. O'Brien brought the subject up to date at the joint meeting of the American and Canadian Institutes at Cranbrook. The present paper is necessarily based largely on these earlier accounts. Discovery and Early Development The outcrop was discovered in 1892 and the property was bonded and later sold to the Sullivan Group Mining Company, of Spokane. From 1896 to 1899, surface stripping and test pits (at A) around the outcrop exposed a vien of sulphides with varying amounts of lead and zinc. In some places, a 35 per cent lead ore carrying 15 ounces of silver was found. These lenses were of commercial value. With the completion of the Kimberley branch of the Canadian Pacific railway, in 1900, some systematic development was started. A shaft l00 feet in depth was sunk (at B). Shaft-house, boiler-room, and compressor-plant were erected, and a steam diamond-drill was put into operation.

A number autonomous operations is in place in several, mainly in fenced areas, where safety is assured by locking off the entire area for other traffic. However autonomy can be brought much further if functional safety is assured and a real mixed traffic of autonomous and manually operated vehicles is possible. MobileTronics has created a modular software and control framework for autonomous machines. The paper covers application examples in which the deterministic object recognition in combination with probabilistic algorithms and sensors is used as a basis for functional safe certification of mixed traffic autonomy.

Mercury has been used by mankind since prehistoric times. It has been, and is now, widely used in industry and medicine and has unique properties which make direct substitution difficult or impossible. At present its prin- cipal uses are for electrical apparatus, control instruments, electrolytic soda preparation, mildew-proofing paints, pesticides, and medical and dental preparations. Deposits of mercury are less common than those of other base and precious metals, but some of the deposits are very large and have been ample to meet the world's past demands. The price of mercury has had many sharp fluctua- tions, but in general, the limited number of producers has resulted in a more stable price structure than that of many other commodities. The United States has been one of the main producers of mercury, and from 1850 to 1961 produced 3,247,704 flasks. Yearly production since World War II has varied from 4,535 to 38,067 flasks. An estimate of domestic resources of mercury producible at various price ranges was prepared for each mercury mine by combining specific knowledge of mercury mineralization with estimates of potential, based on geologic informa- tion and past production history. The sum of the individual estimates for each price range is shown in a table. A parallel estimate of nationwide production potential was made from a study of past price and production relationships. These were analyzed by plotting yearly production figures against the previous year's price, expressed in dollars of constant purchasing power. An equation was fitted to the data by mathematical means and was used to extend the curve into areas of higher than historic prices. Potential production rates at various price levels were taken from this graph. The estimated yearly production rates were used to make an estimate of total potential based on the premise that produc- tion rates and reserves have a proportionate relationship.

Those flat lying, bedded or replacement, non-fossil fuel deposits which exist within the U.S.A., and which are amenable to longwall mining, are identified by reference to three principal factors associated with their physical/geological environments. These are their depth, extent and structural continuity. Technical feasibility is assessed in relation to the likely cutting speeds which can be achieved in the identified minerals with existing longwall shearer machines. Economic comparisons are made between traditional mining operations in those deposits for which technical feasibility is demonstrable. Continents are made concerning those technical deficiencies which appear to preclude the application of existing longwall equipment to the identified deposits and suggestions are made regarding the lines of research aimed at improving longwall technology.

The Hatch Mott MacDonald/Bechtel Joint Venture team is designer and construction manager for the 5.25-mile Tunnel Segment of the overall 16-mile Silicon ValleyRapid Transit Project, which extends the existing Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system southward from Fremont to San Jose. The Tunnel Segment includes twin boredtunnels, mined cross passages, and three deep station excavations situated in highlyvariable ground, high ground water table, and a dense urban setting with high-risebuildings adjacent to the largest excavation. This paper will discuss design challengesthat have arisen with the excavations and the proposed solutions.

"70-foot deep rectangular-shaped bulkheads were built with sheet piles as launching and receiving shafts for a pipe jacking operation for new underground waterlines in a densely populated section of Los Angeles, California. The Press-in Piling Method was specified to drive 95-foot long sheets (a record for the method) to form the bulkheads for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s LA-29 (DWP) Connection Modification and Pipe Jacking. The piling was chosen because of its very low noise and practically vibration-free nature since the site is surrounded by houses, an apartment complex, and existing water lines. The out front areas of the bulkheads were grouted to let the TBM go through without major ground water leaks. Hydrophilic foam grout was also injected in addition to welding steel scab plates on the inside to seal them to achieve sufficient watertightness behind a few split interlocks. BACKGROUND This project was located in the Crescent Heights area of Los Angeles which is a few miles south of Beverly Hills. The project represents the completion of the last phase of the Stone Hollywood Trunk Line. This was an 8-mile long water trunk line that averaged 60 inches in diameter and was built to improve the reliability of the DWP’s major water system. This section of the project involved driving 2 deep shafts to allow for the installation of a 350-foot-long 72-inch steel casing using microtunneling construction. See Figure 1 for the shaft locations and the tunnel alignment. The challenge for the project was that this water line would have to pass beneath the Hollyhills buried box drain (15 feet high by 20 feet wide). Further complicating the construction was the soils beneath the drain. The DWP chose to drive the tunnel at a depth of approximately 65 feet to ensure that the ground conditions were uniform and suitable for the microtunneling equipment. There were two previous attempts to construct this work which failed because of poor ground conditions and very high water levels. This third attempt was critical because the DWP could not afford to have another failure due to the fallout with the residents being impacted by the project."

On the east side of Washington DC, the DC Water & Sewer Authority is developing a Facility Plan for the Anacostia River CSO Control Projects, including 8 to 12 miles of CSO storage/conveyance and flood relief tunnels and associated facilities. The project includes major technical and non-technical challenges, including: completion under a Federal Consent Decree schedule; large diameter (estimated 25 to 35 ft) soft ground tunnels and shafts up to 200 ft depth; operations without use of active flow control systems; and close coordination with several major public and private construction and development projects that are being advanced in the project area.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the UK's Department of Transport introduced the symposium, approved its emphasis on environmental planning and the mitigation of environmental impact, discussed the publicity resulting from the recent opening of the Channel Tunnel as well as the role of private financing, and pointed out the leading role played by the Department of Transport in the introduction of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method to projects such as the Jubilee Line extension and the Heathrow Express (an editor's footnote, however, mentions with regret the Heathrow subsidence that occurred just before the journal went to print)

Grouting is a useful engineering tool for tunnels throughout the world. A wide variety of methods and materials are used, reflecting the broad range of geological, hydrogeological, and structural demands. Most tunnel grouting is conducted with cement, which produces acceptable results in appropriate conditions. However, there are cases where such grouts are not practical, but polyurethane grouts can be extremely useful. Regretfully, these grouts are frequently poorly understood, leading to improper application and therefore poor results. This paper provides a fundamental overview of their application, both used individually and in combination with cement. Case histories from Scandinavian practice are cited.

During the last few years, significant advances continue to have been made in aspects of grouting technologies used for ground treatment in advance of tunnelling. In permeation grouting, fundamental researches have continued into improving the penetrability characteristics of cement-based grouts. The twin advantages of field regrinding normal grouts to reduce cement particle sizes, and incorporating special additives into stable grouts, are now being systematically exploited in major soft ground tunnelling projects in Europe. The methodologies of jet grouting continue to be developed with special attention being paid to qa/qc issues, reducing unit production costs, and improving predictive capabilities for subsequent settlements.

The 56,000' (17 km) long San Vicente Aqueduct Pipeline tunnel is being constructed using precast concrete rings to act as preliminary ground support through two sections of the bored tunnel with lengths of 9,450' (2.9 km) and 33,700' (10.27 km).The six segment bolted trapezoidal ring was manufactured using a combination of steel fiber reinforced concrete and self compacting concrete in vertical moulds. This paper briefly describes the design and function of the segments, and reviews the development stages of the concrete mix, and the advantages and disadvantages of the adopted manufacturing method.

In the Kansas City metropolitan area, mineable Bethany Falls Limestone occurs 80 ft below river level under the 700 acre Park College Campus on the north bank of the Missouri River at Parkville. For 20 years prior to this project various firms passed over this opportunity to mine this property for construction aggregate because of uncertain costs, financial risk, and the difficulty of constructing an entry tunnel. This paper describes the drill and blast construction, rock bolting, and shotcrete lining of a 750 ft. long, 15% declining grade, truck tunnel through several Pennsylvanian limestones and shales.
