The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop safe practices for the use of shotcrete as ground support in underground mines, particularly mines operating in weak host rock. As part of this research, a rugged, portable direct tensile test system was developed for measuring shotcrete adhesion strength in underground mines. During the development of this test system, more than 185 direct tensile tests were conducted with a common, commercially available macro-synthetic fiber-reinforced shotcrete that was applied to concrete test panels using a dry mix process and machinery. The average bond strength of the shotcrete to the concrete substrate typically increased as a function of the shotcrete’s curing age, ranging from 0.44 MPa (64 psi) after one day of curing to 1.58 MPa (229 psi) after 90 days of curing. Adhesion strength increased markedly between one and three days of curing, reflecting a similar trend of increasing shotcrete tensile strength with curing time. This robust direct tensile test system can improve mine safety by providing a reliable means of measuring shotcrete adhesion strength and also supplying important information about the quality of the applied shotcrete and the competency of the underlying rock.

THE PENETRATION RATE BASELINE DILEMMA The penetration rate is the instantaneous advance rate of a TBM in a rock tunnel. Normally expressed in feet per hour. The production rate is the penetration rate multiplied by the number of hours worked and then factored by the actual utilization of the TBM. In a given rock formation, the actual production rate is a result of many factors some of which are within the control of the contractor and some of which are based on the route selected. Factors that are within the contractors control are cutter profile, frequency of cutter changes, thrust, rotation speed, cutter spacing and the efficiency of the operation. Factors that are site (route) specific are compressive strength, fracture orientation, fracture frequency, micro- fracturing, quartz content, Moh’s hardness, Cerchar Abrasivity Brazilian Tensile Strength and Youngs Modulus of the rock. In addition the following route speci?c conditions are beyond the contractors control; rockjointing, rock stress fault zones, water in?ow and rock decomposition; all of which effect production rate. Any one of the above defined rock properties, equipment specifications and actual operating usage will change the penetration rate. Furthermore, since the rock formation changes both in content and orientation as the tunnel advances, the penetration rate is constantly varying. The current industry practice in bidding tunnels is for each contractor to individually evaluate the rock hardness and other properties and from this information develop a penetration rate. All other factors being equal, the contractor using the most optimistic penetration rate will be the low bidder and be awarded the project. As this view is by definition optimistic, invariably the rock will be harder than the low bid assessment and the contractor will request additional compensation for the changed condition. The contractor will attempt to justify his optimistic assessment as reasonable by using expert supporting analysis. The above described example which is quite common at present in the industry tends to make the most optimistic contractor (at time of bidding) the contractor selected for the project whereas it is in the owners interest to contract with the most efficient contractor not the most optimistic. This situation is similar to the Geotechnical analysis that was prevalent in the industry over twenty years ago. Many projects have experienced a significant reduction of penetration rate from that which was originally estimated. In these cases the contractor often makes a claim for extra compensation based on the difference between the actual rock encountered

The paper will describe a number of developments and innovations now in use in microtunnelling machines. These include the use of fuzzy logic steering systems, the proven ability to successfully undertake complex curved microtunnel drives, the ability to complete ultra long drives using microtunnelling techniques, and machines with access to the face of the machine from inside the machine. The ability to tunnel in relatively hard rock utilizing a rock head with back loaded cutters changeable from inside the microtunnel machine and the ability to utilize microtunnel machines in multi modes, such as hard rock mode, “open” mode, EPB mode, and slurry mode with the same base machine again with access to the face of the machine will be described. In addition, the latest computer technology gives the operator “full visualization” of machine functions together with the ability to data log machine operating parameters. Reference will be made to a number of projects worldwide recently completed or under way where these innovations have successfully been utilized.

Realizing ,the magnitude of the operations, and the varied and minute details met with in them on,the Western Front, it is the writer's intention to confine these notes to operations carried out by the First Australian Tunnelling Company. In so doing there is no wish to detract from the very fine records of the Second and Third companies it is to be hoped that members of the Institute (or others) who were with these companies will write accounts of their doings-the former in the water-logged areas to the south of Armentieres, and later in the sand-dunes at Lombardzee, and the latter in the chalk area of the Lens coal...

On the basis of laboratory test results a comparison of various parameters (unconfined compressive strength, CERCHAR and LCPC abrasivity indexes, mineralogy) is presented and discussed in order to outline certain correlations between them. Samples cover a wide range of lithological types coming from various sites of tunnels. The Minerals Availability System (MAS) was formally established by the Bureau of Mines in May 1975 to provide current appraisals of the engineering and economic availability of nonfuel minerals for consideration in the formulation of both domestic and foreign minerals policy, Domes- tic mineral property reports are developed by the Bureau's four Field Operations Centers, and foreign data are obtained under contract. This site-specific information is subsequently subjected to engineering verification and economic evaluation, and the results are analyzed and published as Minerals Availability System Appraisals. The deposit-specific data are also entered into the computerized MAS data base, where a subset of this information, the Mineral Industry Location System (MILS), is available to the public in the form of computer graphics and listings. Other MAS products are also described. The Bureau's MAS personnel are frequently involved in special engineering and mineral economic projects for other Federal and State agencies. MAS personnel also work closely with the private sector, both in the area of mining and processing cost estimation, and as a source of nonproprietary mineral deposit information.

This paper describing the mining practice of the Hecla and Star mines, both located at Burke, Idaho, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. It is partly a revision of articles by the author appearing in volume 72 of the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, published in 1925, and in the June 1928, issue of the American Mining Congress Journal. About 26,000 tons per month of lead ore is produced at the Hecla mine. Costs at the mine are given for the year 1928. Stoping operations in the Star mine have covered such a short period, during which time the abnormal expenses of starting were incurred, that they are not given in this paper.

The Block 37 Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Tunnel Construction Project was originally designed by STV to connect Blue Line subway in North Dearborn Street and Red Line subway in State Street in the downtown Chicago Area. The project was proposed using tunnel mining techniques combined with steel pipe jacking and fiber glass rebar soil reinforcement. Weidlinger Associates, Inc. (WAI) and Kiewit Construction Company proposed an alternate design using open cut construction technology. WAI designed a complex temporary excavation support system using Soldier Pile Tremie Concrete (SPTC) walls and Soldier Pile Lagging walls supported by cross lot/corner bracing elements. Below the top of the existing tunnel, a top-down construction technique was utilized. A steel temporary traffic decking system at top of the excavation site served as the daily street traffic function as well as the first level of bracing for the support of excavation. The project encountered great challenges of soft clay conditions in downtown Chicago, numerous existing utilities in the excavation site and the requirements of protection for a number of historical buildings nearby as well as the protection of the city streets. The construction was successfully completed at both State Street/Washington Street and Dearborn Street/Randolph Street. The monitoring system showed that ground movement and adjacent building settlement was kept to a minimum during construction.

The Verde mining district is in Yavapai County, in north-central Arizona. Jerome, the principal town, has a population of 6000 and the two important mines of the district—the United Verde and the United Verde Extension—lie almost within its limits. Perched high on the southwest side of the Verde valley, at elevations of 4800 and 5500 ft. (1463 and 1676 m.) respectively, both mines have long tunnels from their lower levels through which the ore is hauled to the smelters. Clarkdale, the smelter town for the United Verde mines, lies in the Verde valley 4.1 miles (6.5 km.) distant in an air line from Jerome and at an elevation of 3560 ft. The two towns are connected by the standard-gage railroad of the Verde Tunnel and Smelter R. R., a subsidiary of the United Verde Copper Co. This road is 11 miles long and has a compensated grade of 4 per cent. At Clarkdale it connects with the Verde valley branch of the Santa Fe railroad. Clemenceau, the smelter town for the United Verde Extension mine, lies 3.5 miles (5.8 km.) in a southeasterly direction from Clarkdale, at an elevation of 3420 ft. It is connected to the Verde Valley branch of the Santa Fe railroad at Clarkdale by the Arizona Extension R. R., a subsidiary of the United Verde Extension Mining Co. The portal of the haulage tunnel, at an elevation of 3757.5 ft., is also connected with the smelter town by 4 miles of standard-gage track belonging to the same company. In the vicinity of Jerome, the great southern escarpment of the Arizona plateau forms the northeast side of the Verde valley. The general level of this escarpment, or "rim" as it is called, is about 4000 ft. above the Verde River. A corresponding elevation is reached only by the highest peaks of the Black Hills, which bound the valley to the southwest. Two lava-capped mesas, known as "Mingus" and "Woodchute mountains," form the culmination of the Black Hills. That part of the Old Black Hills mining district which lies between their crests and the Verde River is now known as the Jerome, or Verde, mining district. If the smelter towns are not included, a strip about 7 miles long by 3 miles (11 by 5 km.) wide, embraces practically all of the properties belonging to the Jerome district. VISIT TO THE COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC AND INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH On 23rd June, 1970, members of the Institute visited the C.S.I.R. in Pretoria. More members had booked for this tour but the current flu epidemic caused cancellations which was unfortunate. The visit was organised with military precision, which prevented detailed discussion of any particular subject, but provided a bird's eye view of a large number of interesting projects. The visit was packed with interest for all and those requiring further information were invited to contact the relevant divisions afterwards. Or Denkhaus welcomed the delegates and stressed the importance of integrating research efforts with industry's requirements. An excellent colour and sound film was shown which depicted the work of the Rock Mechanics division. This showed very clearly methods used for preparing rock samples and demonstrated the machines and instruments for the various tests. It made one realise the extent to which this research has been integrated with the actual mining situation. The fullscale experiments underground showed the failure of pillars under applied loads and were very interesting. This is undoubtedly a film which all mining people should see. After the film the rock mechanics laboratories were visited where the actual machines were seen and described. We then visited the metal and strength mechanics sections where the metallurgists were able to see some interesting experiments and tests. We also visited the Aeronautics Research group where a large 1 000 hp wind tunnel was inspected. We were told enough about this to realise something of the complexities involved in the design and operation of a closed circuit tunnel of this type. The tunnel is used for tests on models which are necessary for the design and modification of aircraft. After a very excellent lunch at the C.S.I.R. recreation centre, the delegates attended two lectures-one by Mr. Mandersloot of the Chemical Engineering group, who outlined the varied functions of this group and told us something of their work. Of particular interest was the research into the suitability of various South African manganese ores for dry cell batteries. Work on the thickener settlement studies interested the metallurgists. The second lecture was given by Mr Donaldson of the National Building Research Institute. This Institute has about ten divisions each of which covers a particular aspect of building research. The work of the soil mechanics division was described in detail and illustrated by coloured slides. This was particularly interesting and demonstrated clearly how building failures result from lack of attention to detail of construction where unstable soil conditions exist. Cracks in walls of compound blocks brought the subject home forcibly to the mining delegates. This division has also caried out important work on sinkholes and sUmes dams and produced some positive results. Altogether the visit was most interesting and enjoyable. It was made more worthwhile because the emphasis was on the work being carried out and not on just seeing the laboratories. The Institute is greatly indebted to the C.S.I.R. and its staff for the very excellent arrangements made.

Many underground projects now include preparation of a Risk Register through planning and design as a tool for project and risk management. There is still significant discussion within the industry as to whether and how to best present the Risk Register through the bidding process and the construction phase of a project. While the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works recommends this approach of continuity in risk management procedures, it is silent on the specifics of how this should be achieved. This paper will explore the perceived benefits and disbenefit of including the project Risk Register with bid documents; format and content that should be transferred and lessons learned using the case history of bidding and early construction phase of the Bi-County Water Tunnel in Montgomery County, MD

The Cranberry magnetite deposits occur in pre-Cambrian granite-gneiss, in a belt extending from 3 miles southeast of Cranberry, N. C., to about 6 miles southwest of Magnetic City, Tenn. The belt forms a curve) elongated to the north, approximately 26 miles in length. The Bureau of Mines investigation has been confined to the eastern part of the belt, comprising the area from Fork Mountain, Avery County, N.C., to the Hcupscup Knob prospects in Carter County, Tenn. The deposits were worked at least us early as 1820. The Cranberry Iron & Coal Co. and its successors operated the Cranberry mine intermittently for about 50 years until 1930, when operations were abandoned.

This summary of State laws on explosives was compiled primarily to ascertain what subjects relating to their control have been acted upon by each State legislature and , in general , how they have been treated . It does not include any legislation passed after 1942 , or any proclamations , regulations , or administrative orders . It does not purport or attempt to be authoritative . If any problem arises involving interpretation of the statutes of any particular State , the original source must be consulted for the exact words used by the legislature . This summary , however , will be useful in determining whether relevant statutes exist , and in locating thern quickly, with a minimum of effort . It will be of value also in comparing statutes in one State with similar statutes in other States to determine what construction has been placed upon them by the courts of these jurisdictions or to contrast the varying provisions of many States upon a similar subject . To make these comparisons easier , the statutory provisions for each State have been grouped under several major topics in outline form . Although this sometimes has resulted in disruption of the continuity of individual acts , the increased general clarity and availability of comparable sections have more than justified the procedure followed ,

The Bureau of Mines actively conducted a well-coordinated research pro- gram during the past fiscal year on problems dealing with the production of oil and gas, transportation of natural gas, chemistry and refining of petrole- um, thermodynamic properties of hydrocarbons, and the processing and utiliza- tion of incombustible helium gas. These particular reserach phases, compris- ing the presently scheduled activities, are integral parts of a broad program selected soon after the war as suitable for Bureau of Mines study, to meet immediate needs for specific information on petroleum and natural-gas problems of national scope. Important progress was made and many technical reports were finished during the year. Several reports were published on gas-condensate production problems, one giving the results of laboratory tests of relative merits of various steels and alloys for rosisting the corrosion that occurs in high-pressure gas- condensate wells. Research was continued, using the Bureau's windowed cell, to determine the characteristics of gas-condensate fluids, and an important paper on the phase relations of these fluids at low temperatures was published. An important part of the Bureau of Mines petroleum production research program for many yoars has been the engineering study of type oil fields. This year reports waro completed on the Lake Creek, Sheridan, and West Rod River fields, Tex.; the Atlanta field, Ark.; and the Bogge field, W.V. Othor fields under study and for which reports will be issued are the Carthage and Now Hope fields, Tex., and the Weber pool, Okla. Spocial studios to determine the characteristics of the oil-gas solutions as they exist within the native reservoir rocks have been in progress in the North Lindsay field, Okla.; the Elk Basin field, Wyo. and Mont.; and the Rangely field, Colo. The North Lindsay study brought to light several un- usual physical proporties of the oil as it is found in this deep-seated reservoir. For instance, its viscosity is less than that of water, and more than 2 barrels of the initial reservoir oil must be produced to yield 1 barrel of "stock-tank oil." In the Elk Basin and Rangoly fields the oil-gas solution varies in composition within the reservoir, depending upon structural location. Engineering studies were continued on woll spacing and on drilling fluids with special emphasis on obtaining uncontaminated cores, or coros for which the flushing action of the drilling fluid can be dotormined accurately. In connection with research on production of oil by secondary recovery methods, progress was made in studies of conditioning water for subsurface injoction, of input ratos and pressures for water-flooding oil sands, and of the selective plugging the more permeable mediurs to prevent or retard channel- ing of the injected fluid. The availability of fuels for all types of internal-combustion engines still is tho primary resoarch project in potroleum chomistry and refining. This rosearch program is subdivided into a sorios of problems under four main topics: (1) Raw-material studios; (2) relationships of fuel consumption, proporties, and performanco; (3) utilization of potroleum products; and (4) analytical mothods, which include chomical and physical property detorminations.

During the last twenty years computers have be-come widely used to assist with the simulation and design of large scale, primary ventilation systems. However, to date there are few computer programs available to help with the modeling of auxiliary ventilation in dead-end headings or tunnels. This paper presents the results of the first year of a research and programming study dedicated to the development of a user-friendly duct simulation tool. Included is a literature review that summarises publications on duct leakage and resistance, on previous programs developed for the simulation of airflow in ducts, and case studies on extended ductlines in mines and tunnels. The methodology behind the development of Ductsim, a Windows based simulation program is presented.

"In 2004 works started for the now completed seven-level automated car park accommodating 480 parking spaces inside the pre-existent “Morelli cave”, located in a strategic area in Naples. Since 470 BC Greeks initiated the growth of the fascinating world of the underground Naples, of which this cave belongs. It seems that once here the god Mithras was worshiped. It’s also became a quarry for tuff extraction and in 1600s it became an aqueduct serving the area. In 1853 the Bourbon Tunnel, a project commissioned by King Ferdinand II of Bourbon to allow easy escape from the Royal Palace in case of riots, was connected to this network of tunnels. The cavern became an air raid shelter during the Second World War, then a deposit of cars and motorcycles in the '50s and' 60s, a disposal area and it has been abandoned in the last 40 years before it’s new utilization. INTRODUCTION Over time, the overcrowding and congestion of major cities’ historic centres has led to seeking spaces underground that can accommodate activities and car parks, as in the case of the Morelli cavity, site of the future car park by that name. Before describing its characteristics, design solutions, and executive problems, it is necessary to introduce the site historically into the broader landscape of the cavities present below ground in the municipality of Naples. The province of Naples, which includes the area of the Municipality of Naples, has a large number of cavities. The existence of “Naples underground” is connected with the morphological and geological conformation of its territory, consisting of tuff stone which has entirely special features of lightness, brittleness, and stability. The first transformations in the territory’s morphology, taking place thanks to the Greeks starting from 470 BC, initiated the growth of the fascinating world of Naples underground. These transformations were dictated by water provision requirements, which led to the creation of underground cisterns to collect rainwater, and by the need to recover construction material to erect the buildings of Neapolis. In subsequent centuries, the city’s expansion led to the construction of a proper aqueduct, which allowed drinking water to be collected and distributed thanks to a series of cisterns linked to a dense network of tunnels. During Roman rule, the existing aqueduct was expanded and perfected, but with the rise of the Angevins in 1266, the city saw great urban expansion, which obviously corresponded with increased extraction of tuff from the subsoil to construct new buildings. This confirmed a particular feature of Naples: that of having been generated from its own innards, with buildings rising directly above the quarry that provided their building material."

In Japan, a cartridged emulsion explosive is generally used for tunneling. The workers are compelled to approach the face on charging the explosives into the drill hole with the tamping rod. Therefore, the workers are exposed to the risk of the disaster with the cave-in and the falling rock. The mechanization of the tunnel work has been advancing gradually. Especially, the development of the mechanization for charging work is desired in order to avoid the risk of disaster on workers. Recently, some charging machines such as the bulk emulsion explosives have been evaluated. However, a universal method has not been established yet, because the evaluated machines were not adequately suited from the point of the regulations and the consumption style of explosives.

Under a general program to extend the resources of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines examined the Quien Sabe antimony mine in October 1948. The preliminary evaluation demonstrated that a diamond-drill program was warranted co establish the tenor and persistence of the veins and permit an estimation of antimony reserves. The Bureau of Mines conducted a diamond-drilling program on the property from December 1949 to May 1950. Ten holes aggregating 2,483 feet were drilled. Nine of the holes encountered antimony-bearing vein material.

This report describes the exploration work done in 1941 in connection with the search for strategic minerals as authorized by the Strategic Materials Act approved by the President on June 7, 1939. It deals with the various manganese deposits and showings in the Tombstone mining district of Cochise County, Ariz. The exploration project comprised a study of the geology, mapping of the areas, and exploration of various mines and deposits by sampling old drifts, crosscuts, and scopes, supplemented by diamond drilling from underground stations. The Federal Government's manganese-purchasing programs have revived interest in occurrences such as the scattered deposits near Tombstone.
