"As real estate for new development in urban settings becomes scarce, commercial high rises are being constructed above open passenger rail tracks and vehicular roadways. Rail and roadway overbuilds are treated as tunnels requiring emergency ventilation systems for train or automobile and truck fires. The value of floor space in residential and office towers poses challenges to engineers responsible for designing fan rooms and shafts for tunnel ventilation systems within the towers. This paper describes a case study of the unique incorporation of tunnel ventilation fan plants in the overbuild structure of a passenger railyard and an adjacent roadway.INTRODUCTIONTunnel ventilation systems are required for passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels by the NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and the NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways requires tunnel ventilation systems for vehicular (road) tunnels. Passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels are typically ventilated with a series of shafts placed longitudinally along the tunnels to provide piston relief for normal train operations and emergency ventilation of train fires utilizing reversible axial flow fans. The shafts are incorporated in dedicated ventilation buildings that house the tunnel ventilation fans and starters, switchgear to power the fans and other equipment and systems in the building, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control fan operation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software, and HVAC fans and ductwork to ventilate the spaces in the building. These ventilation buildings may also provide access to the tunnels below with ingress/egress stairs for use by first responders and firefighters entering the tunnels and train or transit system passengers exiting the tunnels in an emergency. "Built in 1940’s to provide a key roadway arterial between New York and Boston, the Heroes Tunnel is the only highway rock tunnel in the state of Connecticut and is part of the Wilbur Cross Parkway. This 365.0 m long tunnel consists of two barrels, each with two lanes of traffic, and carries over 71,000 vehicles per day. For nearly 70 years, the tunnel has seen millions of vehicles pass through but time has taken its toll and now the tunnel lining, ventilation system and radial section joints are significantly deteriorated and in need of rehabilitation. Owned and maintained by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), CTDOT initiated a unique managed approach to mitigate the risk, social impacts and financial implications associated with rehabilitation of this tunnel. This new approach consists of performing field inspection and conducting a comprehensive study to explore six rehabilitation options, including construction of new tunnels and enlarging the existing tunnels. The main criteria for this study are: Impact on traffic and the resulting delay cost; Construction cost; Construction duration; and Construction complexity. This paper will present the results of the alternative study. PROJECT BACKGROUND Location and Importance Heroes Tunnel is located in the State of Connecticut within the Town of Woodbridge and the City of New Haven near the Town of Hamden border. Heroes Tunnel is the only true highway tunnel in the State of Connecticut. The tunnel is part of the Wilbur Cross Parkway (Route 15), a scenic connection between Hartford and New York. Originally constructed and opened to traffic in 1949, the tunneled portion of the parkway passes through the West Rock Ridge. The tunnel was originally named West Rock Tunnel, but was re-designated as Heroes Tunnel in 2003. Route 15 is a vital roadway within the State transportation infrastructure. In the vicinity of Heroes Tunnel, Route 15 carries approximately 71,000 vehicles daily. Locally, Route 15 provides access to residences, shopping centers, and points of interest, as well as other state roadways. Regionally, Route 15 connects New York to the Hartford area and serves as an alternate expressway route to I-95 and I-91. The tunnel is approximately 365.0 m long and passes through the West Rock Ridge. West Rock Ridge is an 11.3 km long rock ridge located on the west side of New Haven. A network of suburban streets abuts the mountain on all sides and a seasonal paved park road climbs to the crest of the ridge. Figure 1 depicts the tunnel topography and location."

The City of Toronto's Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors (NTC) ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. 120 m of Starter tunnel and 70 m of Tail tunnel were excavated with roadheaders to help with the launch of the TBM and as part of the contract base scope work. JayDee Canada in Collaboration with Everest Equipment Co. developed an innovative approach to design and build a stand-alone Ring Machine Erector nicknamed Enterprise to erect precast segmental lining in Starter and Tail tunnels in lieu of Cast-In- Place concrete. This paper describes the design and provides feedback on the innovative procedure used to install the rings.

From time to time the Bureau of Mines receives requests for information and advice regarding the safety of using internal-combustion engines operated on butane fuel as prime movers for haulage and other purposes in mining and tunneling. The purpose of this, circular is to discuss the properties of butane and to present data in regard to the possible use of this fuel in underground operations. Published information on the use of commercial butane as a fuel for internal-combustion engines indicates that, insofar as performance is concerned, butane may be utilized satisfactorily and efficiently for this purpose. However, the introduction of a volatile, inflammable material such as butane into confined spares such as mines or tunnels would create potential fire and explosion hazards that should be given due consideration by those concerned with the promotion of safe practices.

"SUMMARY Every tunnel designer has to consider the power of water ingress when designing a new tunnel. Either you choose solutions with simple methods to divert the ingress water or a robust system with the intention that it will give gain on low maintenance costs and a long lifetime. This article describes a new method to divert ingress water in a robust way and more economical than traditional concrete lined tunnels. This system is based on a bolt grid suspending a water tight membrane, which is reinforced and covered with sprayed concrete. The method has been in limited use in Sweden since 2005 and with continuous improvement, still going on, it is now applied for the large project “Stockholm Bypass”, a 21km long highway project. TUNNEL MAINTENANCE RELATED TO WATER INGRESS The Swedish Transport Administration maintain approximately 190 various tunnels that is constructed by a number of different methods, (Swedish Transport Adm 2015). Commonly the ground conditions are good and fairly low ground support is needed. Contrary water and winter conditions can be sever, which gives high impact onto the tunnel design and in particular methods to protect against “frost and water ingress”. During a tunnels lifetime it is common that maintenance related to water ingress occurs several times and sometimes frequent occasions every year. Such maintenance costs and consequences of lost open time for the tunnel can rapidly become higher than the initial cost of the tunnel. Thereby it is obvious that spending time during design to evaluate requirements for a suitable system against water ingress is preferred. Icicles Icicles are formed when water is below freezing degrees and drips or run from an ingress point. At very cold conditions also water flows running at high velocity freeze into ice and a rapid growth can appear. If the integrity of the tunnel traffic area is interfered by icicles they urgently have to be removed before they cause an accident. Typically the tunnel or a part of the tunnel must be closed to do such maintenance. TUNNELS FROST AND WATER INGRESS PROTECTION IN SWEDEN In Sweden methods to perform “frost and water ingress protection” are primary developed for drill and blast tunnels as it is most common tunneling method. The foundation Swedish Rock Engineering Research has done a comprehensive report SveBeFo Rapport 77 that describes water and frost prevention in Swedish tunnels up to year 2005. Below is only slight description of those various methods. Lately some more attention is paid to concrete lined tunnels made by TBM since TBMs successfully built water tight tunnels in City Tunnel (Malmö) and Hallandsås Project. When environmental demands require maintained ground water levels, water tight tunnels made by pressurized concrete lining becomes more economical and on the same time also becomes protected from icicles and water drips."

A great deal of effort has been put forth in recent years to arrive at accurate projections of the demands for tunnels in this decade. In reviewing the statistics presented by various study groups, it appears that during the decade from 1960-69, there were some 1,335 miles of rock and soft ground construction tunnels excavated throughout the world. These statistics indicate 645 miles of rock tunnel and 689 miles of soft ground tunnel were excavated during the last decade. This is expected to increase to 3,000 miles in the 1970's according to projections made by various authorities in the field of construction tunneling. I point out the above statistics to emphasize two main points: (1) The demands for tunneling in this decade alone are staggering. (2) There is a fairly even distribution in the amount of rock tunneling and soft ground tunneling being excavated. Unfortunately, available statistics do not answer many important questions about tunneling which are of great importance to the contractor and to boring machine designers. For example, how many of the projects completed in the past decade involved both soft ground and rock tunneling? How many projects involved tunneling in conditions where both rock and soft ground were contacted at the same face. While the answers to these questions remain unanswered, I am sure most of you can think of numerous examples of projects where mixed face conditions are prevalent. Many of you are probably familiar with the Austin Crosstown Interceptor which was bid last month in Austin, Texas. Here is a project involving 57,000 feet of tunnel where limestones and clay shales are expected to be traversed. Another project, the Tonner Tunnels No. 1 and No. 2, near Los Angeles, involve some 22,000 feet of tunnel where mixed soil and rock conditions are expected. With the advent of any new technology comes the necessity of fully understanding the mechanics of that technology. The Shock Tunnel is one such technology that provides a cost effective means of simulating large-scale explosions while requiring a fraction of the explosive and space. Although the technique is known and practiced, the dynamics and mechanics of this technology has yet to be fully understood. A relationship between the energy potential of a given explosive and the energy realized at a set of distances was determined. This data was then compared to the energies realized from the same explosive when utilized in conjunction with a shock tunnel. A relationship between potential and realized energy outputs from explosive based shock tunnels exists and the understanding of this relationship would allow all for predictions to be made to forecast a specific amount of explosive required to produce a desired energy output. This energy output should then be relatable to peak pressures produced via the shock tunnel. Two shock tunnels are currently accessible for this study, the first under the direction of the University of Kentucky, and a second under the direction of the Missouri University of Science and Technology. The two shock tunnels differ in dimensions but share common construction materials. Energy realized from a shock tunnel is hypothesized to be a function of the shock tunnel’s dimensions. This study explores how different geometries affect the shock tunnel’s performance; this exploration is broken down into three phases. Phase 1: Open arena testing in which theoretical energies produced by the detonation of small (<1.0 kg) charges are compared to actual experimental values. Phase 2: Shock Tunnel testing in which realized energies are experimentally recorded for the UK shock tunnel. Phase 3: Analysis of the data to lay down the ground work for producing a pressure-forecasting tool given shock tunnel dimensions and explosive characteristics with the possible detection of avenues for optimization of shock tunnels.

The Amtrak East River Tunnels include four tunnels, Line 1 to Line 4, which extend from New York Penn Station in Manhattan, under the East River to Sunnyside Yard in Long Island City. Since fall 2015, Amtrak has initiated a program to repair and reconstruct the century-old tunnels, including structural repairs of all the tunnels and reconstruction of the Line 1 and Line 2 tunnels. The reconstruction includes bench wall demolition and replacing and installing the following elements in the tunnels: direct fixation track, traction power, signal, communication, and tunnel fire/life/safety components. This paper provides design and site investigation challenges and knowledge gained from this program.

The Mount Royal Tunnel (MRT) is a 100-year-old railway tunnel located in Montreal, Canada. The tunnel is approximately 5 km long, 8.7 m wide and 5.5 m high, with a constant 0.6% grade. This existing tunnel will be used by the new Montreal light rail transit network, Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM). This requires the tunnel to be inspected, rehabilitated and made compliant to the recent safety standards. This paper presents the details of the structural inspection and rehabilitation of the tunnel along with the repair methods, addition of a center wall as well as the enlargement of the tunnel section.

Pressure tunnel includes water-supply tunnels and tunnels for hydroelectrical power plants. Their design principles are different from those of water/wastewater/conveyance and transportation tunnels. Though theoretical pressure tunnel design guidelines exist, a comprehensive guide to summarize these guidelines to facilitate the planning and design of a pressure tunnel program is lacking. The purpose of this paper is to fulfill this need. It first provides key pressure tunnel design concepts in hard rock environment; then, it illustrates associated final lining design principles, including the design of un-reinforced concrete lining, steel lining, and reinforced concrete lining. Design diagrams and a flowchart for the reinforced concrete lining design are provided.

THIS paper deals specifically with heading-driving as distinguished from the broader term tunnel-driving. A heading is a pilot or path-finder for the main tunnel. Some headings are complete tunnels in themselves; that is, conditions at times warrant driving a heading the full diameter of the proposed tunnel. A tunnel 10 ft. in diameter might be driven to advantage through a single heading, provided the nature of the material admits, but it usually pays to drive rock tunnels of large diameter through the headingand-bench system. Much depends upon the material, as in soft ground tunnels of much larger diameter are driven in a single heading.

Tunnels and underground infrastructures assets, like all assets, deteriorate with time. At some point, they reach the end of their useful life. Therefore, frequent inspections, higher levels of maintenance, and rehabilitation are needed to address loss of life and safety concerns. The repair cost of tunnels will increase if maintenance of tunnels is not satisfactory and timely. Historically, tunnel inspections have primarily relied on visual and manual procedures. Due to their time-consuming nature and susceptibility to human error, there is a demand for alternative automated techniques that can enhance efficiency and reliability in tunnel inspection. By utilizing a tunnel scanning system, such as laser scanner and thermography, or photogrammetry system, tunnel inspection cost, time, and personnel can be reduced. The goal of this study is to utilize deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for automated identification of defects in tunnel lining inspection. This paper presents a framework to classify two types of defects in tunnel lining (water leakages and cracks) using CNNs. The CNNs were trained and tested using 4,608 images. The Precision, Recall, and F1 Score were each 99.6%, confirming the viability of this approach in the automated defect identification in tunnel lining.

The Systems Conveyance and Operations Program (SCOP) is being implemented to convey tertiary-treated effluent to Lake Mead near Las Vegas, Nevada. The Reach 3 Tunnel Project is part of SCOP. The tunnel?s planned location along and across the Las Vegas Wash creates challenging tunneling conditions. A number of feasible excavation and initial support methods are being considered during the final design stage. This paper describes how the tunnel construction options were refined based on anticipated tunneling conditions and compatibility between tunnel excavation and initial support methods. A brief description of the most significant characteristics of the anticipated ground conditions is included for the purpose of discussion.

"Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project (Eurasia Tunnel) includes 3.34 km of a bored double-deck tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait, at a maximum depth of 106 m from the sea level, and 1 km of twin NATM tunnels on the Asian side. The region’s variable geology, hydrology and propensity for seismic activity, combined with high water pressure and large-diameter/double-deck tunnel configuration, make the Eurasia Tunnel one of today’s most challenging and complex projects under construction. Due to the site’s proximity to the active North Anatolian Fault, the tunnel is designed to withstand a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. The tunnel penetrates through both the Trakya bedrock (on both European and Asian sides) and the alluvial sediments at the bottom of the channel. The tunnel is designed to accommodate differential displacements by introducing seismic/flexible joints at proper locations at the transition zones between rock and soft soils. Tunnel fire is also a significant design consideration for undersea tunnel due to that the rubber protecting it in close proximity of the seismic joint should resist a fire for long term safety and durability. This paper mainly focuses on the design for method of tunnel response analysis in transverse and longitudinal direction against seismic demands relating with the seismic joints. INTRODUCTION Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project (Eurasia Tunnel) will build and operate a roadway tunnel under the Borphorus connecting Kazlicesme on the European side and Goztepe on the Asian side, to provide additional road-access across the Strait and consist of three main parts as shown in Figure 1."

"Wear of TBM tools significantly affects tunneling advance rates. Wear-prediction models are based (amongst others) on the abrasivity of the present geology, which is determined via laboratory tests. To evaluate the results from such tests in context, this work considers the tribological system TBM tool from a materials technology perspective. In so doing, the microstructures of different application-oriented materials are presented and discussed in terms of their wear behavior and wear resistance. The significant influence of tool materials on the abrasivity of the geology and thus wear prediction models has already be identified. LCPC, Cerchar and nano-scratch experiments have been performed as confirmation. Material-dependent wear mechanisms and their correlation in terms of tunneling have shown that it is mandatory to consider the complete tribological system to estimate the wear of TBM tools. 1 INTRODUCTION Mechanized tunneling is vital to ensure necessary infrastructure development in megacities like Tokyo (Bay Tunnel), Istanbul (Eurasia Tunnel) and Mexico City (Tunnel Emisor Oriente). The use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) has been established for many years. In contrast to other methods such as boring and blasting or excavation using dredgers, tunneling with TBMs allows simultaneous excavation and removal of both the mineral and tunnel lining by tubbing segments or shotcrete. This makes tunneling more efficient, allowing for faster development of the tunnel in both hard rock and soil [1]. When budgeting such tunneling projects, precise planning and coordination in terms of tunneling technique choice (e.g. EPB or Slurry-shield), the relevant geology, and the associated penetration rates and tool wear are required. In particular, wear to TBM tools has a significant impact on tunneling progress. Due to wear, tools become dulled or lose their functionality because of brittle material behavior, thus reducing penetration rates and therefore tunneling efficiency [1]. As a result, additional tool changes are necessary, leading to higher overall costs due to down times and maintenance costs. Therefore, there is strong interest in a reliable and precise wear prediction model for TBMs. As already mentioned, the geology and associated wear of the tunneling tools define the maintenance times."

Advances in tunneling technology, such as Earth Pressure Balance and Slurry Shield methods, have allowed the tunneling industry to construct tunnels in increasingly difficult ground conditions. In recent years, a number of civil projects including large diameter train tunnels, subway tunnels, water tunnels, sewer tunnels, and combined sewer tunnels have been successfully completed deep beneath the water table in soft ground conditions utilizing modern day Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). With the increase in difficult ground conditions and higher water pressure comes the inherent need to utilize compressed air to gain access to the TBM?s cutterhead and cutting tools. This paper focuses on one such instance in Los Angeles, CA in which Traylor Brothers Inc. performed a cutterhead intervention by compressing the heading of an 11-foot diameter tunnel to approximately 3 bar gauge pressure. This paper focuses on the environmental controls used to manage ventilation, oxygen levels, temperature, and pressure, as well as discusses the problems associated with toxic gases and the increased risk of fire. The paper will also cover the physical science of the environment and the increased risks of performing basic job functions while in a compressed air heading.

The 6-m- (20-ft-) diameter cast-in-place tunnel lining for Phase 3 of the Mill Creek Tunnel (MCT3) has been completed. This article summarizes aspects of liner design and ad-dresses the construction approach in placing the liner in areas of tunnel that experienced crown overbreak. Tunnel lining production rates, installation procedures and form buoyancies experienced during concrete placement will also be presented. The Mill Creek Phase 3 tunnel (MCT-3) is expected to be completed this year. It is one of the largest tunneling projects undertaken by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) to date. The tunnel horizon is situated within the Devonian Chagrin Shale rock formation at an average depth of 85 m (280 ft). The tunnel was excavated using a two-pass method. A full face, fully shielded, Robbins 7.2-m- (23.8-ft-) diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) was used to excavate approximately 4,500 m (15,000 ft) of tunnel and facilitate installation of initial supports (first pass). The final lining (second pass) consists of 305-mm- (12-in.-) thick cast-in-place reinforced concrete and integral low flow channel. Seven shafts were constructed on the project. The excavation of the tunnel commenced at Shaft 14 and proceeded down grade to Shaft 9, the terminus shaft. Because of the presence of overbreak in the tunnel crown, measures were required to support the form and counteract the effects of buoyancy during concrete placement.

"The McCook Main Tunnel system consists of a 10-m (33-ft) finished diameter, 490-m (1,600-ft) long, hard rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5-m (90- ft) diameter and 92-m (300-ft) deep main gate and tunnel construction access shaft. The gate shaft houses six, high-head 4.4 m by 9 m (14.5 ft by 29.5 ft) wheel gates to be installed in the bifurcated and steellined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir.The construction of the tunnel system has been divided into two contracts. The gate and construction access shaft was completed in August 2011. The tunnel excavation and concrete and steel lining was completed in September 2014. The remaining and undergoing construction include the tunnel connections to the reservoir and the Mainstream Tunnel and installation of gates and hydraulic cylinders. This article focuses on the live connection of the McCook Main Tunnel to the Mainstream Tunnel that was initiated in November 2014 and will continue through the seasonal drier weather conditions in Chicago approximately from October through April. Chicago TARP systemThe MWRD has been addressing combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flooding in Chicagoland since the late 1960s and formally adopted the tunnel and reservoir plan in 1972 to protect the region’s most precious drinking water supply, Lake Michigan. Phase I of TARP, which included construction of 175 km (109 miles) of deep storage and conveyance tunnels with diameters up to 10 m (33 ft), was completed in 2006. In addition to protection of Lake Michigan from CSO discharges, Phase I resulted in substantial improvements in surface water quality as well as the quality of life for lake and riverfront communities in Chicago. Water quality improvements and flooding mitigation will be further enhanced as Phase II reservoirs are placed in service, including the three large reservoir systems, McCook, Thornton and Majewski (Fig. 1).The McCook Reservoir is the largest reservoir in the TARP system. Once completed, this $700-million reservoir facility will receive 38 billion L (10 billion gal) of CSO and flood water via the McCook Main Tunnel, which connects the TARP Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir, and from distribution and Des Plaines inflow tunnels which will bring flow from the Des Plaines Tunnel of TARP."
