This report, sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, presents the results of an examination of available safety assessment methods and their applicability to the mining industry. Standard safety analysis procedures were evaluated for relevance to the mining industry and mine operators' needs. The major safety concerns and needs of mine operators were identified through telephone contacts and a visit to a mine site. Safety assessment methods recommended for use by the mining Industry were also Investigated for potential adaptability to a user-interactive computer system. Several methods were determined to be immediately transferrable to the mining industry; these techniques are described in a user's handbook produced as part of this project. The handbook gives detailed instructions on appropriate application and utilization of these methods. Other techniques will require further development before they can be effectively transferred to the mining industry. These methods, their advantages, disadvantages and resource requirements are described in the final project report. Recommended system safety analysis techniques facilitate an evaluation of total mine system safety and a determination of safety-related interactions among systems within a mine. The application of these methods to the mining industry could result in reductions in both the frequency and the consequences of mine accidents.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted a study to determine the feasibility of water diversion and overburden dewatering for underground coal mines in the Appalachian Region. All relevant published literature pertaining to the occurrence and control of surface and groundwater in underground coal mines was reviewed and organized into a bibliography. The impacts of mine water with respect to health and safety, production, environment, and costs were assessed. Sources of water inflow into underground mines were described. A summary description and evaluation of techniques that can be used to reduce the amount of water entering underground coal mines was prepared. A review of engineering practices currently used by operating coal mines in the Appalachian region to prevent the movement of ground and surface water into active coal workings was conducted. Major emphasis was placed on the identification of the geologic and hydrologic con¬dition of the site, onsite inspection of the methods used and an evaluation of their technical and cost effectiveness.

This report describes a research and development program sponsored by the United State s Bureau of Mines. The purpose of the program was to develop reusable explosion-proof bulkheads for a cross-cut emergency shelter, and to study the implementation of such bulk-heads, and the resulting shelters, as part of an emergency escape plan in a normal coal mining environment. The first part of this report reveals a number of significant conclusions regarding the application of emergency shelters. A study of the cause s of, and the conditions prevailing during a mine emergency indicate s that ideal placement of the shelter s would be midway along developing entries, and at the inter section of butt and main entries. The proper spacing of shelters is based on the travel capability of trapped miners, which is in turn dependent on the height of coal. The life of a given emergency shelter, based on an analysis of the above information, will be anywhere from 6 months to 10 years. Consequently, some shelters are regarded as "temporary?, while others "permanent?.

The need for lightweight aggregate for use in concrete products ,and structures has caused the Bureau of Mines to undertake an investigation to determine the availability of suitable raw materials and to study methods, procedures, and equipment to supply that need. Evidence is at hand to prove that the shortage of lightweight aggregate is nationwide. A survey recently covered in a report (13)5/ by the Construction Branch of the National Housing Agency has pointed out the locations in which lightweight aggregates are produced. A study of this information discloses that the producing centers are widespread, and that certain areas, notably the region east of the Mississippi River, and especially the sections along the Atlantic coast line and the Southeastern States, have only a few such plants. Certainly, many localities are badly in need of installations equipped to provide an ample supply of high-grade lightweight aggregate. The work undertaken by the Bureau of Mines includes investigation of the use of clays, shales, slate wastes, coal-mine wastes, diatomite-clay combinations, and various other 'mineral mixtures as possible raw materials. Likewise, special consideration has been given to the development' of equipment and techniques to produce the lightweight products.

The Bunker Hill Mine, located in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District at Kellogg, Idaho, has been a major producer of lead-silver-zinc ores since its discovery in 1887. The mine has produced over 29 million tons of ore from some 20 to 25 veins and ore zones, and now covers an area approximately one mile in length and one-half mile in width. The active section of the mine extends from 2500 ft above sea level to 1600 ft below sea level. Production is presently at the rate of about 1700 tons of ore per day. A two-mile adit, the Kellogg Tunnel, at the 2500 elevation, provides access to the main shaft area. Ore is hoisted to the adit level through a 5000-ft, 500-inclined shaft, extending to the lowermost haulage level 1200 ft below sea level. Primary shaft service for men and materials is supplied by three major internal, inclined shafts equipped with double-drum hoists. Present production requires ten levels to serve for mainline track haulage. These range up to 5000 ft in length and are either 200 or 400 vertical feet apart. Also, many intermediate levels exist throughout the mine. The conventional and autoloader mechanized square-set and cut-and-fill mining methods used throughout the mine have been the subject of a recent paper(l). One-third of current production is from vein-type ore bodies which are long distances from main shaft areas. Such veins generally dip about 450, have relatively narrow widths of from 3 to 20 ft, and usually contain less than 500,000 tons of ore. For many years, ore bodies thus situated have been developed by means of a separate inclined, timbered service shaft-raise connecting two or more main haulage levels. These commonly range from 400 to 1000 ft in vertical extent and are equipped with 25 to 50 hp electric, single-drum hoists. Intermediate levels are driven as conventional track drifts at 100-ft vertical intervals between the haulage levels. Ore and waste from the intermediate levels are trammed to orepasses for delivery to the lowermost haulage level servicing an ore body. The final result may be visualized as a number of small mines within a large mine. The problems of high development costs and high total development time, and the large amount and high cost of providing materials handl ing and ore haulage service while producing from this isolated type of stope block, made it desirable to consider totally new approaches in developing and mining a number of similar areas.

The mine and treatment plant of the Teziutlan, unit of the Mexican Corporation, S. A., are located at Aire Libre, in the District of Teziutlan, near the northwest edge of the State of Pueblo, Republic of Mexico. The property is leased from the Teziutlan Copper Co. The town of Teziutlan is the terminus of a branch railroad starting from Oriental Junction or the Mexico-Jalapa-Veracruz narrow-gage system of the National Railways of Mexico. A branch line 18 km in length from Teziutlan to Aire Libre belongs to the Teziutlan Copper Co. and is leased and operated in conjunction with the mine.

"Cable bolts are an important support component in modern underground mines. If an optimized cable bolt system is to be achieved, it is insufficient to focus on cable bolt layout design or on cable bolt installation in isolation. Cable bolt support, like all engineered systems, requires a holistic approach, encompassing integrated elements of design, implementation and verification. The “Cable bolting Cycle” described in this paper incorporates these components along with related tools and procedures which should be used together to ensure effective and efficient cable bolt support.Design involves the consideration of demand, capacity and constraints as outlined in this paper. The demands imposed on the sup-port system by the rock mass response to excavation under the combined action of stress and gravity must be matched to the capacity of the cable bolt array. The cable bolt system capacity is a function of the component strengths of the steel strand and the bond (load transfer) and by the deformation response and retention characteristics of the system. The design is bounded by operational and economic constraints.Implementation of the cable bolt array can then proceed and must include appropriate protocols of communication, training and quality control, in addition to both general and site specific installation procedures. Frictional rock bolts are widely used because of their low cost. However, they have a thin wall section that makes them prone to corrosion, and they cannot be relied on to provide long-term ground support. It is difficult to assess the capacity after the bolts have been installed as they can only be pulled out if this has been allowed for during insertion. The questions of how long can the rock bolts function effectively and the effectiveness of various surface coatings, which can have significant cost implications are, investigated in this study.A series of accelerated corrosion tests have been performed on frictional rock bolts. The rock bolts, typically 900 mm long, have been inserted into concrete cylinders produced using a styrofoam insert to create the hole for the bolt insertion. Strata rock bolts with four surface coatings have been tested: uncoated black steel, galvanised, enduro (plastic coated) and coated with a proprietary aluminium/zinc alloy. Tests have been performed on two diameters of bolts. Following insertion of the bolts, the concrete cylinders were placed in a large drum filled with saltwater and current was applied to accelerate the corrosion process. The rock bolts were then extracted at various times after the commencement of corrosion. Comparison of the insertion and extraction resistances shows that corrosion initially increases the bolt resistance and that substantial section loss is required for the bolt resistance to drop significantly.CITATION:Airey, D W, 2014. The gas producer actually dates back far beyond the period from which we first find recorded data. A partial production of producer gas can take place in any type of solid fuel grate equipment, such as a boiler, or even a fireplace if a sufficiently deep fuel bed is provided. Those of us who have watched a coal fire burning in the hearth, have no doubt noticed at times, the gases liberated by the heat burning on or near the surface of the fuel bed. So far as we know, the first gas producer was built by Bischof in Germany in 1839, followed by Ebelman in France in 1840, and Ekman of Sweden in 1845. The first large industrial development in the use of gas producers was When the two Siemens brothers of Germany patented their first combined gas producer and regenerative furnace in 1861, thus opening up the field for the use of raw, crude producer gas in heavy furnace work. In the years 1879-1881 J, E, Dowson, of England developed a producer gas cooling and cleaning plant, which extended the scope of application of producer gas to make possible its use in small furnaces and gas engines.

Investigating blast vibrations typically utilises scaling and attenuation models for prediction of vibration amplitude over a range of charge weights and distances. A number of generalised relationships have been established from many years of far-field data analysis, where small changes in charge weight and ray-path distance are less critical. Under far-field conditions, small variations in local geology or geometry do not significantly affect the vibration scaling behaviour over an expected range of data. In the near to intermediate-field (less than 5 times the explosive charge length), small variations in wavepath and rock mass conditions between a blast and a monitoring point can greatly affect the outcome of vibration modelling. This case is especially true for underground blasting in sublevel open stoping, where the paths of blast-induced vibrations regularly encounter voids and preconditioned ground.

Forecasting, an ancient art, is con-ducted by everyone in varying degrees. It is a vital aspect of mineral production and conditions must be predicted over a long time frame in all aspects of the industry from exploration to plant construction. Although many government agencies as well as private industry make forecasts, there are insufficent "make good" analyses performed. The performance of more such studies could sharpen forecasting ability.

"Real time analysis of conveyed bulk materials can be used to improve process performance by reducing variability and upgrading ore quality through selective removal of increments of flow that do not meet appropriate selection criteria. This paper focusses on proven Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) and microwave transmission technologies used to representatively measure conveyed ore quality in real time so that meaningful decisions can be made between the mine and mill. This enables the effective removal by bulk diversion of small increments of conveyed flow such as waste, highly deleterious material or sub-economic material from the mill feed. Improved ore quality in plant feed optimises process performance, reduces processing costs and minimises tailings generation. Analysis is unaffected by particle size, dust, layering or segregation, mineralogy and belt speed. Technologies are explained and performance examples given from installations in copper and iron ore. The technology has been used successfully in bulk sorting for over twenty years typically using measured increments of a few minutes. Improvements in technology and calibration performance have resulted in accurate measurements over increments of thirty seconds and below.INTRODUCTION Ore quality variability exists on a number of scales. Block model grades represent a few hundred to many thousands of tonnes. Grade control at the mine occurs on a scale typically down to the size of a haul truck, which may be a few hundred tonnes. Highly variable ore quality is detrimental to process efficiency and effectiveness. Processing waste or low grade ore when higher quality feed is available represents a lost opportunity to generate higher revenues earlier in the operational life. Measuring ore quality accurately over short time increments during conveying enables small increments to be measured and diverted according to their quality. The paper explains the technology and benefits. Neutron irradiation techniques were considered potentially suitable for conveyed bauxite measurement by Beurton et al, 1995. Tran & Evans (2001) concluded there was no equivalent technology to Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) in terms of material penetration power. PGNAA was evaluated by Nelson & Riddle (2003) for possible use in the phosphate industry and recommended its use for further characterisation of the mine’s various ore types to improve stockpile allocation and grade control. Cottle (2007) discussed test work for an iron sinter application and Delwig et al (2011) described the successful installation in 2009 and performance of PGNAA for base-to-acid ratio control in sinter feed with the analyser output used to control lime addition. Geoscan (PGNAA) works very well on iron ore and can “improve control over what is happening in the plant” and that comfort can be provided in knowing that the product is on-spec according to Minnett (2010). PGNAA is not yet used in the minerals sector for tariff purposes as has occurred since 2000 with Coalscan (PGNAA) in coal (Minnett, 2010)."

This paper presents a comparison between the simulations of a semi-empirical model and a theoretical model for the prediction of radial stress in rock. The results of the simulations were compared to the results of a field test. The comparison of the radial stress predictions shows that in the semi-empirical model use of the plane wave approximation as the basis for the prediction of the radial stress provides a much better result than the theoretical model. The theoretical model includes the correct elastic wave geometry and theory but fails twice, firstly by considering the charge as a point (unit) energy source therefore; and secondly by using a Delta function with a very sharp rise and decay time to simulate, with no distinction between non-linear and linear zones, the attenuation of the energy per unit volume at the shock wave front as the wave moves away from the borehole. The results of the semi-empirical model were within the same order of magnitude as the results from the field test whereas only one result from the theoretical model came close to the result of the field test. However, even this closer result for the theoretical should be taken with caution as there was no measurement in the field test made at this distance from the borehole. Finally, because of its potential portability, convenience, and cost-effectiveness the theoretical model can be a most valuable tool for mining and civil construction operators in the early design of blasting rounds and of the mining operation itself.

"The 2015 Outstanding Project Award (OPA), which recognizes the superior work of DFI members, was awarded for the San Francisco- Oakland Bay Bridge New East Span. The award was presented to representatives from Caltrans and the T.Y. Lin International/Moffatt & Nichol Joint Venture at the DFI 40th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations in Oakland, Calif. A committee selected this project based on size, scope and challenges of the project; degree of innovation and ingenuity exercised; and the uniqueness of the solution to the difficulties of the job. A bridge across the bay between San Francisco and Oakland was proposed as early as 1872, but it took until November 12, 1936, until it became a reality. The bridge spans to the west of Yerba Buena Island were conventional suspension spans, while the east spans used a steel cantilever truss design and simple steel truss spans. This double-deck bridge served the Bay Area well until 1989. In that year, the magnitude 7.1 Loma Prieta earthquake damaged the East Span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The resulting interruption to service across the bay demonstrated the vital role this bridge plays in the economic and life safety activities of the Bay Area. The project owner, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), determined that the safest, most cost-effective solution was a total bridge replacement. The Engineer-of-Record, T.Y. Lin International/ Moffatt & Nichol Joint Venture, working closely with Caltrans, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the California Transportation Commission (CTC), was charged with developing a comprehensive design strategy that met the project’s stringent criteria for seismic safety. These criteria included the new bridge’s designation as a regional Lifeline Structure that must open to emergency traffic shortly after the occurrence of a 1,500-year return period earthquake"
