The following account of oil-shale operations in Australia is based upon infor- mation obtained by the authors while visiting Australia from September 15 to October 7, 1947, supplemented by published data, and augmented by analyses of samples of oil shale and its products at the Oil-shale Research and Development Laboratories of the Bureau of Mines at Laramie, Wyo. The primary objective of the authors' trip to Australia was to obtain, first hand, information regarding the equipment and methods used by National Oil Proprie- tary, Ltd., at Glen Davis, New South Wales, in mining oil shale, extracting oil from it, and refining the shale oil. This company was operating the only oil-shale plant that had been active in Australia since 1945. The plant comprised an oil-shale mine, 104 modified Pumpherston (Fell) retorts in 2 batteries, a hele refinery, and a 3-inch gusoline pipeline to the railroad loniing terminal t Sun Junction, 30 miles away. There were, also, the usual and necessary any uralities, such as a power house, mechanical shops, offices, and laboratories One Information regarding the company's operations was wance because of its bear- Ing upon the synthetic liquid fuels program of the Bureau of Mines, pursuant to the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of April 5, 1944 (30 U.S.C., 321-325, as amended). objective of the Bureau's program. In accordance with the maniate of the Act, is to furnish American industry cost and engineering data necessary for the development of synthetic-liquid fuel industry, and an obvious means of obtaining some of these data is to learn how oil shale is being mined and retorted and how shale oil is re- rined in countries where these operations have been conducted on a plant scale for many years. The authors spent 2 weeks at the plant of National Oil Proprietary, Lt., at Glen Davis, and were afforded every opportunity to obtain letailed and specific information regarding all aspects of the company'a operations.

The work of the operational communication systems' group dealt with a range of communication needs and functions within mines, primarily along haulageways, to and within sections up to the working face itself, and in mine shafts. A mixture of communication techniques and hardware is needed to satisfy this variety of communication needs within the differing environments encountered in U.S. mines. Substantial progress, both experimental and theoretical, has been made in recent years towards developing alternative communication systems suitable for use in mines which are based on "guided" waves, including wire-less (waveguide-like propagation in mine tunnels) and wire-based systems (leaky coaxial cables or wires) . Major priorities identified for further work needed to confirm (or deny) the applicability, and refine the operational specifications of promising communication systems for mine use include: Short-Term Projects o Cost/performance analyses of promising leaky coaxial cable and UHF radio communication systems which require further data from: - Experimental investigation under U.S. mine conditions of the performance of potentially applicable leaky coaxial cable communication systems developed in Europe (France, Belgium, and the U.K). - Cost estimates on these coaxial cable communication systems. - Measurements of UHF radio propagation in low-coal mines. - Investigation of the influence of obstacles (e.g. shuttle cars and section machinery) in the entries on UHF radio propagation in mines. o Investigation of the problems of transmitter and receiver coupling and termination matching associated with the two-way propagation of low frequency radio waves in hoist shafts.

Hard-rock caverns for hydrocarbon storage are a very particular type of underground facility controlled not only by local administrative and regulatory constraints that can be very specific, but also by the possible risks of geotechnical or geomechanical failure. Each such facility throughout the world is a prototype that needs to be adapted to very different site conditions. The straight forward application of design methodologies from relatively similar fields (mines, tunnels) can be very useful, but risks holding back the scientific and technical improvements needed by an engineering industry in full development. Here we look at various case histories and at problems that have been raised where recent attempts at standardization would appear to have been ill adapted, and where storage designers, through experience and judgment, may still provide innovative engineering solutions.

Eimco Great Britain, a division of Baker Mining Equipment Company, was contracted to develop a hardrock tunnelling machine in conjunction with British Coal. The objective: a machine to cut rock up to 170 MPa compressive strength yet retaining the flexibility of roadheader type machines. This flexibility to encompass mobility, wide range of excavation shapes and sizes, simplicity of design and use, compact size, and efficient cutting operation. Current roadheaders operating in hard material are characterized by: 1. Severe machine vibration 2. Bouncing of the boom away from the rock 3. Very high pick wear 4. Inability to sump head in bad floor conditions The reasons for this poor performance can be attributed in part to: 1. High speed of cutting head rotation 2. Inability to hold boom against rock while cutting variable hardness strata. To overcome the problems described, a new articulation method was developed utilizing four hydraulic rams to "lock" the boom in position on one axis and four hydraulic motors to rotate the boom for cutting via a turret arrangement. The slide mounted turret is hydraulically advanced for sumping into the face, independent of the machine base. To transfer cutting forces back to the rock, the machine base is held rigidly in the excavation by floor to roof or side to side rams. A cutting head mounted on the boom rotates at very low speed, but with very high torque.

The use of EPB shields in the so-called mixed face conditions has set new demands to man and machine in EPB shield tunneling. EPB shields were initially conceived to drive in the pressurized closed mode in soft ground, whereas hard rock TBMs were designed to work in the unpressurized open mode. The present use of EPB shields in hard rock and mixed face conditions requires the combination of both technologies by finding best compromise solutions. This paper deals firstly with the geotechnical and mechanical interactions between machine and ground. Further on the critical points such as tool wear and tool replacement are exposed, together with a proposal of best solutions.

Rock exposures are usually a very small part of the surface area in any mining district and the prospector and geologist must base their deductions as to the area, extent, and structure of various formations upon exposures that seldom form 5 per cent. of the area studied. Most often, outcrops form less than 1 per cent. of an area, so that exploration for mineralized contacts or mineral-bearing formations necessitates drilling, test pitting or tunneling, shaft sinking, and other underground work. In these days of high costs any method that will give definite facts regarding rock? obscured by soil or other material should be used to the greatest possible extent. In the early days of the Lake Superior iron districts, mines were located in the few places where ore was present in outcrops. Later, larger orebodies have been found, in depressions, obscured by soil and other foreign material. Mineralized rocks are oftentimes more weathered, softer, and more easily eroded than unmineralized rocks. It is quite natural, therefore, to expect that such orebodies (particularly where large enough to influence erosion in former physiographic conditions) should lie in depressions and be obscured by later debris. It is not difficult to believe that the history of the development of Lake Superior iron mining may be duplicated in other mining districts, that even larger orebodies than those first mined may be found in areas where the rock exposures, which led to original discoveries, are few or lacking. The chief properties of rocks that can manifest themselves through an obscuring cover are magnetism, electrical effects, radio-activity, gravity, and sound transmission. All of these have been used, to a small extent, to tell us a few things about what lies below the surface that we could not otherwise determine, but none has been used so long and so widely as

The series of earthquakes in the vicinity of Koyna Dam in south- western India, which included a very damaging magnitude 6.5 shock on Dec. 11, 1967 (Dec. 10 GMT), is of much interest. The events are exceptionally well documented, which is a tribute to Indian geologists, seismologists, and engineers. To help in disseminating the information in the United States, this chapter presents a brief summary of the pertinent data and lists references. Koynanagar (Koynatown), which began as the construction camp for the dam, is located about 140 miles southeast of Bombay and 70 miles south of Poona at 17.4ºN and 73.7ºE, about 40 miles inland from the Arabian Sea. Koyna River flows almost due south from its source a distance of about 38 miles and then makes an abrupt turn to the east and travels some 480 miles to empty into the Bay of Bengal. Koyna Dam is located about 3 miles north of this turn. The approximately north-south trending continental divide is a few miles west of Koyna and the terrain drops steeply about 1700 ft to where the hydroelectric generating station is located. The reservoir behind Koyna Dam forms a long, narrow lake (Shiva- jisagar Lake) with mean water level (MWL) at 2160-ft elevation. The 345-sq-mile watershed receives an annual rainfall of about 200 in., most of which falls between mid-June and mid-October. The peak storage is 99 x l09 cu ft. A controlled flow passes under the continental divide in a tunnel and then down to the electric generating station about 5 miles WNW of the dam. The inflow not used for power generation is released to Koyna River. The Koyna project is a major source of electric power for Bombay and produces 540 MW at peak load.

IN the past few years many men, including technically trained engineers, have been asphyxiated in metal mines, coal mines, tunnels and surface wells where a few relatively simple precautions with regard to ventilation and air testing would have saved them. Death from mine gases is analogous in some respects to death from poison and from drowning. The respiratory passages of a victim who has breathed oxides of nitrogen from burning explosives are badly irritated and a few hours or even a day after exposure he may develop a quick and fatal pneumonia; if, however, he enters without respiratory protective apparatus an atmosphere deficient in oxygen (a condition that may occur in unventilated or poorly ventilated parts of all underground mines) he collapses and if not rescued dies more quickly and surely than a lone nonswimmer who falls suddenly into deep water. An example of an atmosphere virtually without oxygen was demonstrated by an air sample taken by a Bureau of Mines engineer wearing oxygen breathing apparatus in a Cripple Creek shaft some years ago, during the recovery of the bodies of two victims of asphyxiation; analysis of the sample by the Pittsburgh laboratory of the Bureau showed the presence of 18.40 per cent of carbon dioxide, 0.27 per cent of oxygen, and 81.33 per cent of nitrogen, although the atmosphere apparently was clear and normal. In a mine one can pass from good, breathable air to an atmosphere that will kill as quickly as one can dive from a board to deep water below. Dissemination of technical data on developments in rock-blasting techniques in Sweden initially takes place as personal contacts and contacts between companies. In addition to these informal contacts, contacts occur in Sweden in a somewhat more organized form. There exists an informal working group--the Rock Blasting Committee--which consists of a number of personal representatives from various companies that perform rock blasting on a large scale and from firms manufacturing the equipment that is used. This means that people from both mining and construction companies get together, plus the manufacturers of explosives, drill steel, drilling machines, and loading equipment. This working group has, so far, succeeded very well in ignoring the purely commercial interests of the companies concerned. Cooperation in this form was started in the 1940's when the tungsten-carbide drill steel was invented-the group originally concentrated entirely on the development of that product. Their activities have been broadened since that time and now a meeting is held every year, at which practical experiences are reported. Only in the past five years have subjects relating to blasting procedures to avoid rock damage been treated at such meetings. This, of course, does not mean that such techniques had been neglected previously. It does, however, reflect the fact that practice in this field is still under development. Why do we try to be careful about the rock surfaces? Obviously, it is a question of economic evaluation. An even rock surface provides, in certain cases, the conditions for more favorable maintainance costs later on, greater strength, and a diminished risk of slides. The economic connections in this field, however, are neither simple or clear. A well-controlled blasted rock surface limits the need for concrete when you later build the concrete constructions. In this respect, the connections are all the more clear. In certain situations, such as tunnels for hydroeletric power plants, a good rock surface that is not lined is hydraulically more favorable than a more coarsely blasted surface. The explosion at Appin Colliery on July 24th, 1979, demonstrated the need for a large scale facility to simulate an underground type explosion and study its effects. The effects of an explosion cannot be established quantitat- ively using small scale models. A gallery was constructed for this purpose at Londonderry Centre and commissioned in Feb- ruary, 1980. It is 50 metres long, 2.7 metres in diameter, capable of withstanding an internal pressure of 210 kPa and is the only facility available for this purpose in Australia. The gallery has provided valuable inform- ation on blast effects of explosions in tunnels and is to be used for testing the performance of explosion arresting devices, further invest- igation of explosion effects, research into basic explosion phenomena and instrumentation development. Additionally, it will provide a demonstration facility for training purposes.

While the neurological and vascular aspects of Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) has been generally accepted as a medical condition, the medical criteria and the clinical findings used to establish the diagnosis has been more difficult to bring to consensus. The criteria was first quantified by the Taylor-Palmear scale.1 This criteria was subsequently modified in 1986 at the 1st Stockholm Workshop2,3 to included more acceptance for the neurological effects that characterized the predominate findings in some workers. The relationship between hand-arm vibration and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome was defined in NIOSH 97-1414. While the aforementioned documents have defined the clinical entities associated with hand-arm vibration exposure, agreement on the clinical findings and test to confirm the diagnosis has be been more difficult to bring to consensus. Clinicians assessing HAVS has relied on a number of varied neurological and vascular tests. The neurological testing has focused on assessing damage to the sensory capability of the fingers for the neurological component including tests to measuring ability to sense vibration, cold or other end point finger sensor functions. However, the vascular testing has been traditionally focused on the ability to either measure vascular function or to reproduce the vascular blanching that occurs in HAVS with cold water provocation. Recent assessment of this testing in the United Kingdom Coal Miner’s study has questioned the value of this testing especially in reviews by McGeoch.5 In an attempt to provide some type of definitive testing to substantiate vascular damage from hand-arm vibration exposure, angiography is an alternative or adjunct to cold water provocation testing. The standards that have been established to predict the level, type and incidence of HAVS have been based on clinical studies and reports that have essentially been all male populations. However, the recent entry of women into more vibration intensive jobs has brought about the exposure of some women to high levels of vibration previously only previously experienced by men. However, there have been only few studies that look at HAVS in women6. Although exposed the same vibration levels, it has not been clear that the latency and type of pathology of HAVS in women will be the same as for men. The purpose of this study is to look at recent case studies of men and women exposed to jobs with high levels of hand-arm vibration with extensive clinical testing for both the neurological and vascular components of HAVS as well as other associated upper extremity conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

This paper is written as a supplement to that of Edwards, Baker and Knight on "The Geology of the Wonthaggi Coalfield" 1, the West Area pit being in an early developmental stage at the time of their paper. The thin seams to the west of Dudley Basin 2 had beenknown for many years but it was not until 1935 that it became necessary to work them. The West Area Pit came into production as Dudley Area Pit approached exhaustion in 1937. From available information it was estimated that early work would be in a 36in. bottom seam. The present top seam was not included in the reserves, but it was to be extracted where it proved thick enough for economical working.THE SEAMSEdwards, Baker and :Knight (1944) had insufficient information to correlate positively the West Area seams with those in the Dudley Basin. Their opinion was, however, that they were a westerly extension of the Bottom Seam. Since then the driving of the present north-east heading towards No. 4 Bench McBride Tunnel has established that the West Area seams are those worked as Bottom Seam in the Dudley Basin. West Area Top Seam is a seam that occurred above the Bottom Seam in the Dudley Basin. Only sporadic attempts have been made to work it in Central Area, because 30in. was considered an economic minimum height until recent times. This seam should not be confused with Top Seam, Dudley Basin, which lies some 300ft. above the bottom seam measures and except in isolated areas over deeper workings has been eroded away in West Area.

As the reservoir rises behind an arch dam, it presses the arch into the canyon walls and valley floor. To compute the stresses, deflections, and arch reactions, it is necessary to know how much the rock deforms under the combined loads of gravity, temperature, and water. Under sustained loading for a period of time, the rock continues to deform or "creep" slightly, causing changes in the stresses and shape of the arch. Under reduced loading, the elastic arch tends to resume its unstrained position and it is important to know that the rock will follow it and maintain tight contact along the abutment. It is, therefore, important to know the "set" characteristic of the rock. Past attempts to define load-deformation properties of rock, including creep and set, have largely l been limited to laboratory test of intact cores and in-situ jacking test utilizing bearing plates 2 to 3 ft in diam. In both cases, a uniaxial load has been applied to a volume of rock too small to fully reflect the influence of cracks, joint systems, foliation, and other inherent weaknesses within the rock mass. This chapter describes a large radial jacking test which more nearly duplicates the action of an arch dam by penetrating the load deep into the rock mass, bringing into play more of the factors which contribute to prototype deformation. Results obtained from the large radial test are compared with those from smaller uniaxial test. The extent of this interest has been evidenced to the Bureau of Mines by numerous requsts for information as to the factors that must be considered if Diesel engines are to be used safely underground.

The Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, passed by Congress in the wake of the disaster at Farmington, West Virginia, led to an extensive study by the National Academy of Engineering of the problems involved in coal mine safety. One of the results of this report and subsequent research conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines has been the investigation of electromagnetic techniques for the location of trapped miners after a mine emergency. The Westinghouse Georesearch Laboratory has been involved in both the 2 theoretical and field studies relating to this problem. A compact personal beacon transmitter has been developed which can be attached to and powered by a miner's lamp battery. A compatible lightweight loop antenna package has also been developed which can be easily carried on a miner's belt. This antenna can be quickly deployed on the mine tunnel floor. For the purpose of calculating its electromagnetic fields on the earth's surface, the loop can be considered to be a magnetic dipole buried in the earth. (The earth is assumed to be homogeneous and to have a conductivity of s mhos/m.) The surface of the earth is assumed to be uniformily sloping and the transmitter dipole oriented as in Figure 1. The fields on the earth's surface can be computed by using a superposition of the fields of a 4 vertical magnetic dipole3 and of a horizontal magnetic dipole in proportions which depend on the slope of the terrain. In the case of level terrain a null in the horizontal magnetic 5 field occurs on the surface directly above the dipole. This null is designated as the apparent source location and is the criterion by which the source is located. The criterion was tested at two hardrock mines and two coal mines in the fall of 1972. The apparent source locations were compared to actual locations determined by conventional surveying techniques. It was found that due to nonlevel terrain the apparent and actual source locations differed by up to 13 meters. This discrepancy can be resolved by an examination of the fields of a source beneath uniformly sloping terrain. Figure 2 shows the experimental and theoretical results for a

THE Pennsylvania Legislature, on March 13, 1837, passed an act authorizing the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co. to construct a railway to connect the North Branch Division of the Pennsylvania Canal with the slack water navigation f the Lehigh River; the navigation company accepted this act on May 10, 1837. Edwin A. Douglas, chief engineer for the navigation company, located the route for this railway from White Haven to Wilkes-Barre, which was called the Lehigh & Susquehanna Railroad. The object was to transport coal from the Wyoming Valley, of Pennsylvania, to the Atlantic seaboard. This railway was considered a marvelous piece of engineering, as it included a tunnel nearly 13 mi. long, and a series of inclines, or planes, up which the cars laden with coal were raised from the vicinity of Ashley to the summit f the mountain near Solomon's Gap, whence they were taken to White Haven by rail. There the coal was transferred to canal boats. In June, 1862, floods almost completely destroyed the upper division of the canal, so on March 4, 1863, the Pennsylvania Legislature passed an act prohibiting its restoration, but granted a charter for the construction of a railway from White Haven to Mauch Chunk to connect with the line from White Haven to Wilkes-Barre, previously built. On March 16, 1864, a supplementary act was passed extending the Lehigh & Susquehanna Railroad to Easton, Pa. This completed a direct all-rail route from Wilkes-Barre to the New York harbor (by way of the Central Railroad of New Jersey). Up to this time, all freight and passenger traffic passed over the planes, but in 1866 and 1867 there was constructed what was known as the "back track" down the mountain side between Solomon's Gap and Ashley over which all the passenger traffic and empty cars thereafter passed; it is now known as part of the main line. For the handling of the heavy coal traffic, however, this would have involved a continuous climb from Ashley, 170.27 mi., from New York, to Solomon's Gap, 157.8 mi. from New York, or a distance of 12.47 mi., and a total ascent of 1,013.75
