The purpose of this paper is to outline the advantages and disadvantages of single tube and twin tubes for subway systems. Different aspects such as diameter of the tunnel (tunnel spaceproofing), configuration of subway line and stations, impacts on passenger safety and evacuation, ventilation system as well as rail system for each solution were evaluated and compared. In addition, a multi-criterion approach is established to facilitate the decision making for these two different subway systems. The practical example of a mega project has been discussed and the details of the decision-making process has been explained. This proposed multicriterion can be used to facilitate selecting the best subway system in any urban areas.

This report contains the results of a technical and economic evaluation of conceptual systems for the underground mining, rubblization, and in situ retorting of deep oil shale deposits. Study efforts were first directed towards evaluation of the applicable geology, associated minerals, rock mechanics, in situ retorting, access mining, ventilation, rubblization, safety, and environmental impact factors. Conceptual systems were synthesized and then evaluated against these factors from both a technical and limited economic viewpoint. The results of these evaluations were then analyzed and, based upon this analysis, the following two systems were selected for further study: System II: Room and Pillar-Vertical Drill and Blast System IV: Tunnel Boring-Horizontal Ring Drill and Blast Due to the large number of variables to be considered, a computer program was developed and utilized to provide data for the cost trade-off studies and economic analysis. Results of the early computer runs indicated the value of the tool available? in the computer program and led to an extension in the contract to determine the sensitivity of the systems to several of the more apparent significant variables. These results in turn led to a refinement in the design assumptions and a better understanding of the technical and economic options available to an owner-operator of a Vertical Modified In Situ Shale Oil Extraction System. This report is submitted in fulfillment of the requirements of Contract Number 50241073 by Fenix & Scisson, Inc. to the Denver Mining Research Center, United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines. The present case history deals with the examination of an almost forgotten nickel prospect, near Winesap, Chelan County, Washington. Although the final results yielded no ore body of commercial importance, the integration of surface and underground exploration, geophysical survey and diamond drilling endow the story with interest. The program is significant because it is illustrative of how the most disappointing expenditures in mining exploration, the "not-finding" costs, could have been reduced had geophysical methods been applied at an appropriate stage in the prospecting work. The Chelan nickel deposit was discovered about 1900, on a sage-brush-covered hillside with a southerly slope, adjacent to Winesap Canyon; the paved highway now extending from Wenatchee northward, up the Columbia River and into Okanogan Valley, is only a mile away. After the deposit was found, three short prospect tunnels were driven into it, and the prospect then remained dormant for 40 years. No. x tunnel was 80 ft. long, running north into the hillside. For the first 35 ft. this adit exposed a typical, iron-stained gossan with streaks and stains of malachite, and small seams of water-soluble nickel sulphate. Beyond this, it encountered a relatively fresh peridotite, well mineralized with blebs of pentlandite. Systematic sampling yielded an average assay of 1.5 per cent nickel and 0.3 per cent copper. Down the hillside to the south and 35 ft. lower in elevation, No. 2 tunnel was driven under No. I and in the same direction, traversing 50 ft. of gneiss before it reached the peridotite. At this point the latter formation showed only scattered blebs of sulphides, not of commercial grade. To the west, on the same contour line as No. I tunnel, and 800 ft. around the hillside from it, No. 3 tunnel was driven 50 ft. into the hill to explore a strong gossan outcrop that assayed 0.5 per cent nickel (Fig. I). From the geological exposures on the hillside and in the tunnels, it appears that the main mass of the hill is formed of an ancient and altered gneiss complex. Into this, a sill-like injection of amphibolite (altered peridotite) was intruded, which, at least in some places, contains commercial quantities of nickel sulphide. Its structure is obscure, but it appears to dip into the hill at an angle of about 15°. In the vicinity of No. 3 tunnel a large dike of quartz diorite cuts the peridotite or amphibolite; about 140 ft. north of the portal of the tunnel, a dike of andesite 00 ft. wide cuts boldly up the hillside to break the continuity of the peridotite in that direction. The geological evidence available was not adequate to decide whether the peridotite forms a continuous sill, or occurs as isolated bodies in the gneiss. SRC rockmass classification have been applied to 25 tunnels in Spain and Italy, for which it was found that much heavier supports than those estimated by the RMR index were required. SRC and RMR indices and other relevant geomechanical data were obtained during the site investigation and construction stages. Data corresponding to in situ stress measurements, analysis of tectonic structures, and instability problems arising during construction were used to asses the state of stress. The relationship between tunnel section convergence and the SRC and RMR indices was also analysed. Support measurements based on SRC and RMR classification were compared with those actually used during construction. These analyses indicate that for most of the tunnels examined, supports estimated using the SRC were much closer to those actually installed than those predicted by the RMR index. Bei der Verwendung des SRC-Systems zur Klassifizierung des Gesteins als Baugrund für 25 Tunnel in Spanien und Italien wurde festgestellt, dass viel schwerere Abstützungen benötigt wurden, als wenn die Beurteilung anhand des RMR-Systems angefertigt würde. Die Klassifizierung anhand des SRC- und des RMR-Systems, sowohl als auch andere wichtige geomechanische Daten wurden während des Ablaufs der Erkundungen und der Bauausführung gewonnen. Die Resultate der Messungen der Spannungen vor Ort, die Analyse der tektonischen Struktur und die Stabilitätsprobleme während der Bauausführung wurden dazu verwendet, um den im Felsgrund vorherrschenden Spannungszustand zu definieren. Das Verhältnis der Messungen der Tunnelkonvergenz zu dem SRC- und RMR-Index wurde auch analysiert. Die durch das SRC- und RMR-System vorhergesagte Grösse der Abstützung wurde mit der Grösse der Abstützungen verglichen, die am Bau letztlich verwandt wurden. Diese Vergleiche zeigen, dass für die meisten der studierten Tunnel die Vorhersage der Abstützungen, die anhand des SRC-Systems angefertigt wurden, viel näher der wirklich verwendeten waren als die Vorhersage anhand des RMR-Systems. Central Water Integration Project (CWIP) Segment 5-1 is the most critical segment of a regional water supply project that transfers groundwater from Burleson County to northern San Antonio, replacing over 20% of that City’s water supply with a new source. CWIP Segment 5-1 included three tunnel reaches totaling 10,350-ft and 5 shafts that were constructed inside the City in an area known to contain large karst features. This paper describes site work used to investigate the alignment for karst features, manage potential environmental impacts, develop the contract package required for mitigation and the means and methods used to mitigate the large karst features that were encountered.

"The City of Atlanta’s Water Supply Program Tunnel project includes a 7,315-m (24,000-ft) long, 4-m (13-ft) diameter, hard rock tunnel. A complex aspect of the project involves connecting five, blind bore shafts to the tunnel in a location close to current drinking water reservoirs. During the supplemental geotechnical investigation following the initial contract award, results from additional borehole geophysics were reviewed. Unfavorably oriented fracture sets forced a change in the original pre-excavation grouting program designed for that site. Real-time grout monitoring and geophysical data were compared to provide assurance that the program, as designed, correlated with the in situ ground conditions. Following grouting, results were modeled, and all grouting data were reviewed to determine if grouting was complete.Project backgroundThe current water supply system operated by the city of Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management (DWM) consists of four, aged, raw-water pipelines, one of which dates back to 1893. Based on previous assessments completed by the DWM, the entire water supply system is at, or will soon reach, its recommended useful life. As such, the city acquired the Bellwood Quarry in 2006 with the intention to create a water storage facility with a volume of approximately 9.1 billion L (2.4 billion gal) to serve approximately 1.2 million people.The project location is shown in Fig. 1, which is generally in the northwest part of downtown Atlanta, GA. The overall project has been divided into two phases. The Phase 1 project connects the quarry and the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant (HWTP), and the Phase 1 Extension project connects the HWTP to the Chattahoochee Water Treatment Plant (CWTP) and the Chattahoochee River. A 7,315- m (24,000-ft) tunnel with a finished diameter of 3 m (10 ft) connects all three elements. The HWTP location is also where the city’s two most proximate drinking water reservoirs are located."

It is clear that precise overground and under-ground mapping is an important factor for all designers. Due to rapid changes in underground construction, tunnel designers are increasingly in need of updating project information. This article explains the latest techniques for detecting under-ground utilities as well as underground mapping. Global Positioning System (GPS) is a very ac-curate and popular navigation and mapping system that has been used extensively above ground, but is not used for underground mapping as signals are not strong enough to pass through ground or water. Most underground techniques were developed for military applications during the first and second world wars. Later, the techniques became public. For example, ground penetrating radar was developed for the military in 1970 to be used for locating tunnels under the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. Later, the same technique was used for detecting unexploded ordinance such as plastic land mines.

In This Chapter [Finding the dust source Ventilation and dust collector malfunctions Upgrading the dust controls Design stage ventilation planning ] This chapter explains how to reduce respirable dust76 in hard-rock tunnels during excavation by using tunnel boring machines (TBMs). The first steps in combating a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. If the ventilation system and dust collector are operating properly, then other dust controls such as water sprays and conveyor belt scrapers must be upgraded. For tunnels in the design stage, recommended air quantities are provided. FINDING THE DUST SOURCE AND LOOKING FOR VENTILATION MALFUNCTIONS [The first steps in fighting a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. Without knowing the exact source, efforts to reduce dust are hit-and-miss (mostly miss).] Taking samples to pinpoint the dust source. In tunnels with high levels of airborne dust, the first task is to pinpoint where the dust enters the airstream. Most dust originates from rock breakage at the tunnel face, but the location where this dust enters the airstream can vary. Dust can leak from behind the TBM face shield, from gaps in the ventilation duct, or from a mal-functioning dust collector. It can be entrained into the air from the muck on a moving conveyor belt. It can even be shaken loose from the underside of the belt as it passes over the idlers. As a start, to locate the dust source, dust samples and air quantity measurements should be taken at the following locations:

"In slurry balanced shield tunneling, how to ensure the safety of construction and to reduce the influence on the environment has arisen wide attention of scholars both at home and abroad. But now it is still in the stage of experience as to the instability mechanism of the slurry shield tunneling excavation and its stability analysis. Based on the large-diameter model tests and FLAC 3D, the effect of the different waterhead (non-water, 0.9m and 1.1m) on stability of excavation face of slurry balanced shield is investigated, and the stability mechanics is proposed. The results show that: waterhead heights play an important role on excavation face instability features of slurry balanced shield in sandy stratum, Regarding the different waterhead heights, the development mode of the excavation face instability features can be divided into non-water mode, lower-waterhead mode and higher-waterhead mode; soil arching is existed in the process of excavation face instability, the settlement of ground lags behind excavation face failure, the soil arching will block or eliminate the effects of ground settlement; excess pore water pressure need to be considered besides earth pressure and hydrostatic pressure when the supporting force is calculated. INTRODUCTION With the development of the society, for the cities all over the world, the exploitation of underground space has become an important measure to solve the problems about population, resources and environment and an important way to heal the city syndrome and implement the sustainable development strategy of city. Constructing shield tunnel with large diameter is the major trend for development of tunnel construction (Yin, 1999). Instability of excavation face caused by relief of shield soil stress is still one problem that needs to be solved (Xiang, 2001). How to reduce the effects of construction on surrounding environment? How to accurately determine the instability of shield excavation face and to effectively and reasonably select the supporting force? These are the crucial problems which need to be solved during shield construction."

The Penstock Access Tunnel (PAT) concrete plug is a reinforced concrete plug separating the pressure tunnels from the personnel accessible tunnels and has leaked since the first filling at the Helms Pumped Storage Plant located in Fresno County, California. A grouting program was successfully implemented in 2009 to reduce the leakage from PAT concrete plug from over 1,000 gpm to 25 gpm. Recent observations indicated increasing water leakage through new pathways, leading to a decision to execute a high-pressure grouting and waterproof membrane installation program in 2017. The high-pressure grouting and membrane installation program was successfully executed in the areas adjacent to the PAT concrete plug where most of the inflows originated and the largest hydraulic gradients are suspected to present. It reduced the leakage from over 300 gpm of inflow to less than 20 gpm.

This paper details the extensive underpinning required to hold up the 39th street Bridge while demolishing its massive support piers and building a 30ft deep Cut/ Cover RR tunnel beneath it. The underpinning/SOE support required the construction of 16 large hand dug pits 36ft deep that were reinforced and concrete filled. In addition, an extensive steel support system was tied into the bridge super structure. All of the underpinning/tunnel construction was done while a 110ton crane sat directly atop the heavily trafficked – 66 ft. wide bridge. The tunnel excavation, concrete lining and final bridge pier support work will also be presented. All work was done within 5ft of active mainline tracks and that required tight grouting behind all lagging to eliminate any track settlement.
