Mining began in Pend Oreille and Stevens Counties about 1885, Lead and zinc have been the principal products, and the area has supplied nearly all the output of these metals in the State. Fend Oreille County's output of lead and zinc from 1902 to 1956 was 110,700 and 229,600 tons, respectively. The Stevens County total was 54,100 tons of lead and 87,600 tons of zinc. Copper ore was produced mainly from the United Copper mine, Chewelah district, from 1912 to 1920; the principal gold mine was the First Thought, Orient district, which was active from 1904 to 1942. Approximately 225 mines and prospects produced; most of the ventures were on a small scale. The total value of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc produced from 1902 to 1956 was $75.2 million in Pend Oreille County and $39.4 million in Stevens County. INTRODUCTION In compiling the figures for this report, use was made of Bureau of Mines permanent records of nine production, the annual tabulations of producing mines, and the Minerals Yearbook. Requests to publish individual data, obtained from the annual production canvass, were made to the latest recorded operators of all mines in the area. Response to this request was good; therefore, it was possible to make the tables nearly complete. In a few instances the producer requested that the production data remain confidential, and in others it was not possible to reach the mine operator at his last known address. The district and county tables combine statistics for all mines, including those mines whose output could not be published separately.

The growing demand for iron ore from Western Australia has led to an increased focus on the development of magnetite and lower grade iron ore deposits. The need to process and beneficiate the ore from these projects can result in the generation of significant quantities of iron ore tailings over the life of a project. Over the coming decades, the management of iron ore tailings will become a significant aspect of the mining landscape in Western Australia.The tailings generated from iron ore projects differ signifi cantly from other mineral tailings currently produced in Western Australia. Iron ore tailings are generated on a scale not matched by any other mineral process and can often contain asbestiform or potentially acid forming components. New iron ore projects are coming under increased environmental scrutiny because of their large scale operations and the sensitive environments in which they occur. This combination of factors creates some unique challenges for the management of tailings generated by iron ore mining in Western Australia.This paper presents the fi ndings of two studies conducted in recent years to overcome the challenges posed by iron ore tailings. The paper discusses the role of laboratory testing in the development of management strategies for asbestiform minerals in tailings. It also presents a numerical modelling approach for evaluating the rates of rise in the storage of magnetite tailings. The paper concludes by outlining how the findings of these studies can be applied to reduce tailings management costs, lower risks and improve environmental outcomes for the management of tailings from iron ore mining.

The site selected for the United States prototype pumped storage project of Union Electric CO. was Proffit Mountain, five miles from Taum Sauk, the highest point in Missouri. Factors influencing final location were: high local relief; satisfactory rock type and structure; and an economic location in respect to existing transmission systems. The upper reservoir was constructed by excavating rhyolite porphyry from the crest of Proffit Mountain and constructing a rock fill dike encircling the area to form a 4350-acre foot reservoir. A 6564-ft tunnel connects the upper reservoir with the generating and pumping facilities. A concrete gravity dam on the East Fork of the Black River forms the 6350-acre foot lower reservoir. Precambrian rhyolite porphyry forms the crest of Proffit Mountain and the floor of the upper reservoir. The tunnel was excavated in rhyolite prophpy, granite porphyry, dolomite, shales and conglomerate. Abutments and the foundation of the gravity dam are in rhyolite porphyry, and much of the valley floor of the lower reservoir is underlain by dolomite and shale. Core drilling provided data on soundness of rock type, structure, depth of weathered zone and potential water loss in the fractured igneous rocks. After a six-year study of pumped storage and cost comparison with alternate stream generating units, the Taum Sauk pumped storage project was authorized by Union Electric Co. on Dec. 11, 1959.' The site selected is located in the St. Francois Mountains of southeast Missouri approximately 90 miles south of St. Louis (Fig. 1). The lower reservoir was provided by damming the East Fork of the Black River, a small tributary of the Black River with a minimum flow of about 1 sec ft. Construction of the upper reservoir was effected by quarrying the crest of Proffit Mountain - five miles from Taum Sauk Mountain, the highest point in Missouri — to provide material for a rock fill dike surrounding the quarried area. This provided a 55-acre mountain top lake with a water depth of 92 ft (Fig. 2). A vertical shaft and tunnel connect the upper and lower reservoirs through the two reversible pump-turbine motor-generator units operating under 800 ft of hydraulic head (Fig. 3). The output rating of the plant is 350,000 kw with daytime generation of about 2.2 million kw-hr under normal use. Night pumping will replenish water to the upper reservoir in about 91/2 hours3. The automatic operation is remotely controlled from the Osage plant and from the dispatchers office in St. Louis. GENERAL GEOLOGY Mountains of the St. Francois area consist of Precambrian granites, granite porphyries, extrusive fel-sites and basic dikes. Basal conglomerates overlain by Upper Cambrian Bonneterre dolomites and shales onlap the exhumed Precambrian knobs and hills and are exposed in the narrow valleys. Cambrian and Ordovician residuum as much as 200 ft thick is present on the slopes of many hills. Proffit Mountain consists of rhyolite porphyry and granite porphyry. All excavation for the upper reservoir was in rhyolite porphyry, and the same rock is present under the Bonneterre at the plant site and under alluvium at the lower reservoir dam site. The region has been dissected to the stage of early maturity with only small upland flats remaining. Considerable local relief (a requisite for the project) approaches 1000 ft. Streams flowing across the Precambrian ridges have formed restricted narrows, termed shut-ins. A shut-in approximately two miles downstream from the plant site provides an excellent site for the lower reservoir dam. TEST BORINGS Preliminary to final approval of the project, 12 test borings were made to determine subsurface geologic conditions (Fig. 2). Drill hole No. 12 at the lower reservoir dam site showed 20 ft of alluvium over solid rhyolite porphyry. Drill holes No. 1, 2 and 3 were drilled in the tail race area to depths of 66 ft, 75 ft and 95 ft respectively, and all bottomed in Bonneterre. "Underground structures are an integral part of the infrastructure of modern society and are used for a wide range of applications, including subways and railways, highways, not at least nuclear facilities. When the wider area is subject to earthquake activity, underground constructions should be analyzed on seismic and static loading. Observations showed that the underground structures have significantly less seismic risk than surface structures. Available methods allowed analyzing the magnitude of risk for different input parameters of seismic loads in different ground environment. Simulation of earthquake loading on underground structures, in the present paper is given the various aspects of analyzing the potential damage and instability of underground facilities. INTRODUCTIONThe development of methods and computing resources used for para-seismic engineering has finetuned the evaluation of the seismic strength of buildings and equipment. Reinforcements may therefore be decided, not simply on the basis of a reassessment of the hazard, which constitutes input data for the calculation of structures and equipment, but also on the basis of developments in para-seismic engineering. Underground facilities are an integral part of the infrastructure of modern society and are used for a wide range of applications, including subways and railways, highways, material storage, and sewage and water transport and not at least nuclear facilities. Although in the past showed that the underground structures are significantly less seismic risk than on the surface, the professional researches and their results are accessible. Seismic resistance of underground structures is analyzed from several aspects. The currently available methods allowed analyzing the magnitude of risk for different input parameters of seismic loads in different ground environment. For better interpretation of earthquake loading on underground structures, are given below the various aspects of analyzing the potential damage and instability of underground facilities in rock. One of the early studies which covered this are of investigation were prepared by Dowding and Rozen (1978). They grouped damages due to earthquakes in underground structures into three main categories:- damage from ground shaking- damage from fault dislocation- damage by earthquake-induced ground failures (e.g. liquefaction and landslides)."

"The Meuse/Haute-Marne Underground Research Laboratory (URL) is located on the eastern boundary of the Paris Basin. The URL started to be built in 2000 (shaft sinking operations) in the framework of ANDRA’s (French national radioactive waste management agency) research program aimed at determining the feasibility of a reversible deep geological disposal of high-level and intermediate-level long-lived radioactive waste (HLW, IL-LLW). Its underground drifts are used to study the Callovo- Oxfordian claystone layer between 420 m and 550 m in depth.The ongoing research program (started in 2006) following the “Technology Readiness Level” (TRL) Scale is more dedicated to technologies improvement and demonstration issue of the different disposal components, even if characterization and monitoring studies are still ongoing.In rock mechanics, at the main level of the URL (located at 490 m), construction and evolution of disposal cells of different size are studied for HLW and IL-LLW packages. A step by step approach, started in 2006, is carried out based on comparison of HM behavior of parallel drifts excavated/supported by different construction methods. These various configurations give insight of the influence of construction method on the EDZ extent and evolution and on the progressive loading of the support, which are key issues to design the Cigéo disposal drifts and excavations.The concept of disposal cells studied for HLW consists in horizontal steel lined micro-tunnels 80 m long and 70 cm in diameter. Several campaigns of tests have been carried out since 2009 in order to demonstrate the feasibility of excavating such micro-tunnels and study their behavior under different conditions (with and without back filling the annular gap between the rock and the casing, watertight or not casing). A full scale demonstrator representative of the benchmark concept has also been excavated, to study its behaviour under thermal loading with heat produced by electrical heaters."

"Every year the tunneling business is expanding and collaboration with the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) for the future design of cities and urban communities is in the making. During the last half of this century, billions of people migrated to cities, and it is estimated that by 2030 almost five billion people worldwide will reside in urban communities. Hence, “Underground development will be an important tool in reshaping our urban areas to meet the challenges of the future without destroying their heritage or worsening their surface environment” (Esaki, 2005). In 2013, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) estimated life expectancy to be around 80 years, meaning that in less than a decade we will need to bury billions of people in cities and urban communities, while trying to retain the deceased’s beliefs and customs. Religion plays a major role in our lives, and many people worldwide still decline to cremate their body after their death; therefore, cemeteries are essential for city inhabitants. Rites and traditions usually call for burials to be near the place of residence, which allows the remaining family members and friends to visit the grave frequently, at least in the first years. This is a challenge that urban designers and architects must confront while trying to solve the problems of future urbanization. In recent years, population growth, the rising cost of land and the extensive preservation of green areas have made cemeteries a burden and a nuisance, particularly for large cities and communities. Many graveyards that were once on the city's outskirts have become lifeless islands in populated areas (Fig. 1), rarely visited by the second and later generations. Cities worldwide face the challenge of allocating less land to maintain current burial practices. In response, some cities have begun to bury their dead at a great distance from the community; others have started to stacked burials, one on top of the other, while still others are constructing buildings and even skyscrapers for the practice of burial (Fig. 2)."

TBM (TBM) mining in urban areas particularly under low overburden is a big challenge to design and excavate. During excavation of the Lucknow Metro project, in Uttar Pradesh, India the metro authorities encountered a design stretch where the TBM had to cross a sewer canal crossing of 15 m length under overburden of less than 1 m. Not only the stability of TBM due to uplift was of concern but also the stability of both banks. Most structures on the canal banks were non-engineered structures whose stability due to vibration of TBM was also of concern. Due to these risks, a method was proposed that met stability requirements for both ground and superstructures. The design was practical and cost effective to construct, and a collaborative exercise between the client, contractor and designer that took approximately 18 months to implement.

"Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport underwent a $1.2 billion dollar expansion project centered on the construction of the new Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal. Passenger access between the new International Terminal and the domestic airport facilities is primarily via underground Automated People Mover (APM) trains. Prior to this expansion, the APM tunnel terminated beneath Concourse E, which previously served all international flights. The new International Terminal is located approximately ½-mile from the previous terminus of the APM tunnel.A paper describing the general approach to excavation support for construction of the entire APM tunnel extension from under Concourse E to the new International Terminal was published by two of the authors (Hurley and NeSmith, 2014). One of the features of note of the approach involved the intersection of the proposed new alignment of the APM tunnel extension under Concourse E with the old terminus. Specifically, the new tunnel extension conflicted with the location of the existing Auger Pressure Grouted (APG) piles supporting four columns in Concourse E. This paper presents design and installation details of the micropile underpinning approach used to support the existing columns to allow for the proposed excavation including the cutting and removal of the existing APG piles, while allowing Concourse E to remain in service during construction.PROJECT DETAILSGeneralThe construction of the APM extension required an excavation support system for a 450-ft long, 55-ft deep excavation across Taxiway Dixie and a 900-ft long, 30-ft deep excavation beneath the basement of existing Concourse E. The excavation under Concourse E required both excavation support and support of the existing columns over the proposed excavation zone. A general overview of the work area is shown on Figure 1."

"The two track road sector between Cisneros-Loboguerrero (having a length of 14 km and 11 short unidirectional tunnels) is a new highway still on construction located along the existing Highway Buga – Buenaventura (Colombia). Due to the steep topography, difficult geological/geotechnical conditions, the traditional portal construction approach was impossible to be implemented in eleven (11) of the twenty two (22) portals. In this specific project, the skewed portal approach was developed as the optimal and more effective solution. The construction time and costs of portals were reduced in 21 months and 75%, respectively. At the same time, the natural equilibrium of the slopes was maintained, thus, facilitating adequate safety factors along the useful life of the project. This document pretends to show a detailed design experience (and the construction of the entry portal of tunnel 11 (left)). INTRODUCTION The Cisneros-Loboguerrero project is a 14 km length dual lane highway, connecting productive zones with the Pacific Ocean along the current Bogota-Buenaventura highway as shown in Figure 1. The project is located at the northern side of the Dagua River Valley. The preliminary design suggested constructing portals under challenging topographical conditions, i.e., slope cuts having heights between 50 to 100 m (some having slopes > 100%) requiring complex developments and having very high risks.The entry portal of tunnel 11 (left) was the first portal successfully built by implementing the skewed portal approach. Later, this approach was used as a model for the construction of the other ten (10) portal having similar topographic and geotechnical conditions. The development of this new alternative provided a considerable reduction on the construction time of portals, thus relieving a critical path in this project."

Longwall mining systems are used to mine approximately 50 pet of the world's total underground coal production. Single entries are the predominant method of longwall development in Europe and Asia, where mining conditions are more severe than those encountered in the United States. During the 1970's and early 1980's, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. mining industry invested nearly $20 million in single-entry and related research. This report reviews the accomplishments of single-entry research in the United States and describes two U.S. single-entry field projects: the Sunnyside single-entry project in central Utah and the tunnel-boring project in northern West Virginia. Also discussed are a single-entry study conducted by North American Mining Consultants (NAMCO) and a single-entry design study conducted by Ketron, Inc. This Bureau report compares the resulting technology with European counterparts to further assess the utility and efficiency of U.S. systems.

This paper presents the analysis and measurements of blast-induced ground vibrations during the construction of Istanbul Kagithane – Piyalepasa – Dolapdere – Dolmabahçe highway tunnels. These tunnels known as T1 and T2 are being constructed by a joint venture group. Within the scope of the study, the particle velocities and frequencies associated with 126 shots during the advancement of the tunnels were monitored and analyzed by vibration monitors at the test site. During the statistical analysis, three different predictor equations widely used in the literature were used to predict peak particle velocity (PPV) and the results and comparison of the predictor equations are presented in this paper. Finally, the particle velocities and frequency values of all blast events were evaluated according to USBM and German DIN 4150 Norms in order to determine the damage risks of the neighboring buildings and structures.

THE INVESTIGATION of barrier pillars in the Western Middle field is part of the comprehensive study of the mine-water problem in the anthra¬cite region of Pennsylvania by the Federal Bureau of Mines (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8,9,10,11,1,2,15,16).8 The Western Middle field is in Schuylkill, Columbia, and Northumberland Counties in eastern Pennsylvania. It has an area of 120 square miles, is 42 miles long from Delano on the east to Trevorton on the west, and is 2 to 5 miles wide. In the Western Middle field are 58 underground water pools containing 38 billion gallons of water (5). Some of the pools overflow to the surface, and the water from others seeps into adjacent mines through permeable barrier pillars separating them from abandoned mines. Several active mines are interconnected to workings in abandoned mines, which are partly filled with water. These mines are separated by barrier pillars that are considered effective only below the altitude of the connections. In some abandoned mines, pumping stations maintain the water at altitudes where the hydrostatic pressure against the barrier pillars is not excessive and does not endanger adjacent active mines. If water in these abandoned mines is allowed to rise to where it can overflow into the active mines, it must be pumped from the active mines at lower altitudes; this materially increases the cost of pumping. It is estimated that from 1944 to 1948 approximately 30 percent of the water pumped to the surface was from abandoned mines.

High stress underground mining poses a significant challenge to rock mechanics and rock engineering. To overcome theses challenges significative improvements in solutions and best practices of the design and operation of mines under high stress have been developed and implemented. This paper presents certain topics related to the management of high stress for sustainable underground mining. The topics include; the effect of preconditioning techniques (destress blasting and hydraulic fracturing) in the seismic rock mass response to underground mining and the dynamic behaviour of rock support systems. The opportunities associated with research in rock mechanics and practical rock engineering are discussed.

This paper cites selected, prominent examples of current, major projects in Southern Africa in both the mining and civil fields. Differences and similarities in the life cycle of mining and civil projects are discussed. A closer relationship between the mining and civil fraternities is beginning to develop and should be encouraged because of the resultant exchange of experience and technology which benefits both disciplines. An attempt is made to assess future potential for new, major projects and trends in the implementation thereof.

The Musaimeer pump station and outfall project (MPSO) is in Doha Qatar. This technical paper will discuss and explain the three major stages of geotechnical investigation employed. Stage one the tender geotechnical data and how this was used to design the TBM and identify various areas of risk. Stage two was the selection of supplementary geotechnical investigation methodologies. Stage three was the geotechnical investigation by specialist equipment installed on the TBM and providing further data on a real time basis as the TBM was advancing. Analysis of all the data will be provided along with the lessons learned.

"Results from a study directed towards identifying and measuring the mutagenicity of diesel exhaust particulate matter involved in mining exposures, especially those which may synergistically affect genotoxic hazard, are presented in this paper. Particulate matter emissions from a diesel engine, representative of the ones found in underground mines, were sampled and assayed to determine the genotoxic potential as a function of engine operating conditions. Diesel exhaust was diluted in a multi-tube mini-dilution tunnel and the particulate matter was collected on 70 mm fluorocarbon coated glass fiber filters as well as on 8"" x 10"" hi-volume filters. A six mode steady state duty cycle was used to relate engine operating conditions to the mutagenicity potential.Protocols developed for using a primary component of pulmonary surfactant as a medium for collecting and applying respirable particulate material to cells for mutagenicity testing offer a true representation of in-vivo delivery of such respired aerosols to pulmonary cells and the genetic material within . The surfactant dispersion technique is discussed in this paper. Methods have been developed to sample and assay the diesel soot and diesel soot/mineral dust complexes which would not compromise the surface and physical properties of the particulate material."

Since the early days of risk management, developments in technology and guidelines (ITA, ITIG, OGG, UCA) have advanced risk management and probable cost estimating, which are now widely recognized. WSDOT’s CEVP risk-based cost validation process is now established after 20 years. This paper traces these developments, summarizes advanced techniques, and presents examples of US and international projects with results. A particular case of using advanced risk evaluation to allow enhanced-capability TBMs to be considered in a competitive bid process is presented. Further advances, including the use of digital twin risk-based representation of complex projects, are described.

Public-private partnerships (PPP) are gaining in popularity at the federal, state and local levels as the public sector seeks private capital to finance infrastructure and other projects that traditionally have been funded with public funds. In general, a PPP involves a development agreement between a public owner and a private sector concessionaire. Under the development agreement, the concessionaire is responsible for financing, designing, constructing and typically operating and maintaining the completed project for a concession period (often multi-decades in duration). The concessionaire typically enters into an agreement ? the design-build agreement ? with a design-builder to design and construct the project. The concessionaire may secure financing from banks, investors or from a combination of these and other sources (collectively the financier). While the PPP experience in the United States has been modest to date, an increasing number of projects involving tunneling or other significant subsurface work are already being delivered in the PPP mode. Public owners have significant options to address risk allocation for subsurface conditions on PPP projects. The same sound and fundamental principles of fairness in risk allocation that apply in other major subsurface projects should be applied and adopted in the PPP context

The first practical and successful use of a laser-beam guidance system for a tunnel machine drilling to a remote target has been achieved at the Bureau of Reclamation's Navajo Indian Irrigation Project near Farmington, N. Mex. Using such a guidance system, the Hughes Tool Co.'s "Betti I" drilled a 10,000-ft long tunnel in eight months and 18 days to within 5/8-in, of established line and grade. The electronic system which guided the "Betti I" features a gas laser whose beam is aimed at two light-sensitive targets on the boring machine. From these targets, the operator of the machine receives electric signals on a read-out panel which tell him the machine's precise location within the tunnel. The operator can then make any adjustments necessary to maintain line and grade while drilling ahead.
