The Sandbukta-Moss-Såstad (SMS) project is a part of the Intercity development project, which is part of the largest transport project in Norway, consisting of 270 km of new double-track rail. The SMS project consists of 10km of double-track railway including three open stretches and two tunnels. Soil conditions consist of quick clay underlain by Bedrock. Dry soil mixing (DSM) was considered as the main soil improvement method to allow for excavation of the quick clay and construction of the D-Wall panels. The preliminary design revealed around 25,000 ton of binder installation. Therefore, a test field has been conducted to evaluate binder alternatives in means of improved soil strength by considering CO2 emissions. Multicem and Standard cement (Standard FA) have been compared for that purpose. Multicem is a type of binder which mainly consists of Portland cement and cement kiln dust (CKD). CKD is a fined-grained, solid, highly alkaline material removed from the cement kiln exhaust gases. reverse column penetration test (FOPS) and pre-drilled column penetration test (FKPS), which are common tests to evaluate DSM strength have revealed comparable strength outcome for both binder types. Therefore, Multicem has been selected as the main binder type to be used further which provided a reduction in CO2 footprint of up to 40%.

When an open pit mine is deepened, more and more waste rock must normally be removed. Techniques for optimization of open pit design are well-established within the mining industry. The recommended method is to choose the open pit alternative with the highest net present capital value of open pit and future underground mining. When the open pit is mined out, the operation must be closed, or, if it is profitable, mining must start underground. When planning an underground operation we experience the same type of optimization problem that occurs when determining the optimal depth for open pit mining. When mining underground the ore body is often divided into a number of areas, blocks or slices, each containing a transportation system with trains, trucks, conveyors, etc. When all the ore within such a part of the deposit is extracted, the operation must be closed, or, if it is profitable, a new transportation must be developed. The question that now arises is: how large a pan of a deposit shall be included in the first development and how much shall be left for future consideration?

"IntroductionTHE PROPERTY of Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines. Limited. comprises fifty-eight claims located between Russet and Faulkenham lakes in Baird and Heyson townships of the Patricia portion of the District of Kenora. The mine is seven miles •by road from the hamlet of Red Lake. This latter centre is .connected to the Trans-Canada Highway at Vermillion Bay, Ontario, by provincial highway No. 105 which has a total length of one hundred and thirteen miles.The Madsen property went into production on August 11th, 1938, with a milling plant rated at 300 tons per twenty-four hours. Changes made in the crushing plant during October, 1938, allowed a •finer feed to be delivered to the mill and increased the milling •capacity to 400 tons per twenty-four hours. During 1948, steps were taken to add an additional 400-ton capacity unit to the milling plant. This latter work was completed by May, 1949, giving the present total milling .capacity of 800 tons per twenty-four hours.It was realized in the early 1940's that, eventually, considerable material suitable for backfilling in the mine would be required. As there were no large deposits of gravel or sand anywhere near the mine, officials of the Company considered it advisable to investigate the feasibility of using mill tailings for mine •backfill. Since Madsen mill tailings contain approximately 80 per •cent of minus-200-mesh material, it was not considered practical to use them for underground backfill without first removing the finer material. as the slimes present in a product of this fineness would without doubt preclude any drainage whatsoever. Table I gives a sizing analysis of Madsen mill tailings and Table II a quantitative chemical analysis of the ore."

Affected by the disturbance of blasting activities, deformation instability and rock dynamic disasters are prone to occur in deep hard rock roadways. Thus, it is particularly necessary to understand the failure behavior of rocks and roadways under dynamic loads. In this study, a series of impact loading tests were carried out on sandstone samples with and without a circular cavity by a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) test system. The mechanical properties and energy evolution of the samples were systematically investigated, and the effect of cavity size was analyzed. The results showed that the presence of the cavity in the samples weakens the dynamic compressive strength by more than 10%, and the peak strain and brittleness are also reduced to varying degrees. Under dynamic loading, spalling cracks occur first on the roof and floor of the cavity, and then different numbers of shear cracks are formed on the sample diagonals. The eventual shear failure mode is the result of the connection of the shear cracks and the cavity. As the cavity radius increases, the dissipated energy density and fractal dimension both grow accordingly, leading to smaller and smaller rock fragments. The dynamic failure behavior of the circular cavity can be well explained based on the dynamic stress distribution law. Overall, this study can provide a reference for the study of the mechanism of rock burst in deep roadways.

"The decrease in strength with increasing rock specimen size is usually associated to the increase in the number of defects inside the specimens at small scale (centimeters) but also to the role of the rock mass structure at the rock mass scale (meters to decimeters).This matter of concern was particularly focused when determining the size of pillars in underground mines. Some formulae regarding strength of pillars have been proposed but they usually consider only the size and shape of the pillars and the strength of the intact rock. The structure tends to be overlooked or hidden behind the scale, but it is probably very relevant. For standard tunnel design, the approach by Hoek and Brown (1997), taking the structure into account in terms of the GSI, is commonly used. However, this approach does not specifically consider the size of the tunnel. Thus, a size larger than the so-called representative elementary volume is implicitly contemplated.The authors have recently performed a lab study on the effect of the structure in the strength, deformability and post-failure characteristics of granite at lab scale (NX size) extended here. This experimental program included intact and artificially jointed rock specimens. Obtained results permit to observe the changes in strength, deformability and post-failure behavior of this “small scale rock masses”, associating the role of the structure to the observed complete stress-strain response of the specimen, which can improve our understanding of the actual complete mechanical response of rock masses."

As part of a $2.2 Billion bridge project that will link Indiana and Kentucky, an interchange project northeast of Louisville will require the mining of a 6-lane tunnel system about 2,000 ft long in order to cross beneath the historic Drumanard Estate. This paper will discuss preliminary engineering that has been undertaken to compare two-bore and three-bore layouts, the planning of an exploratory tunnel facility, and the potential for including a test chamber to investigate the ability of high capacity roadheaders to mine the 22,000 psi limestones.

Extruded Concrete Lining combines technological and financial advantages. The tunnel lining is reliably embedded in the surrounding ground as the fluid concrete is extruded at constant pressure directly behind the TBM supporting the exposed surface. Ground deformation from the TBM passage can be compensated and the ground will be pre-stressed by the extrusion process. Developments in concrete technology permit high speed tunneling by use of a slip formwork attached to the TBM. Realised projects in Milano (Italy), Lyon (France), Frankfurt (Germany) and Akima (Japan) will be demonstrated.

The Henderson mine site is located at Red Mountain on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains, approximately 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado. The mill site is on the west slope of the Rockies and mine and mill will be connected by an underground railroad. All designs were for a 30,000 ton per day molybdenite processing plant with provisions for future expansion up to 50,000 ton per day if required. This plan did not just happen, but slowly evolved over the course of about three and one-half years. Many plants cannot afford such a delay, but the Henderson project will take about 10 years from the time it was first discovered until production starts, and these 3 !1 years were well spent in determining the best possible plant site and flowsheet. This paper describes some of the problems and the decisions made in arriving at the final location and flowsheet. The paper does not go into the specific details of how protection of the environment went hand-in-hand with all other project considerations. This particular aspect of the planning has been well-reported on other occasions and considerable information on it is readily available.

Since the turn of the century the mining industry in the United States has had a number of serious mine explosions, fires and ground fall disasters that have led to a major re-evaluation of mine communication and rescue practices. One of the hindrances of current underground communication technologies is the potential of lost or cut connections when a serious accident, such as an explosion, fire, inundation or major ground fall, takes place. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act)1 mandated that each underground coal mine in the U.S. must provide for two-way wireless, post-accident communications between underground and surface personnel as well as electronic tracking of underground workers One area that has gained renewed attention in the mining sector is Through-The-Earth (TTE) communication. TTE technology has a major advantage in that transceiver devices can be carried by miners and set up quickly during an emergency, since they require no wire connection to the surface. TTE technology uses ultra-low frequency (1 to 4 kHz) electromagnetic waves, requiring relatively large wire loop antennas and highly sensitive receivers. The signal bandwidth is narrow and the permissible antenna currents in coal mines are restricted, which has led to limited usability of TTE technology in the past, as evidenced in research studies conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the 1970s. Yenchek (2012)2 pointed out that recent advances in receiver and signal processing technology have enabled voice and text communication capabilities and much improved sensitivity that offers new possibilities for TTE communication in mining applications. One company that has been developing such technology is Vital Alert Communication Inc. Vital Alert has been providing TTE communications since 2003 with a growing focus on emergency response and portable systems. The company?s Canary® Go System is one such product that looks to provide reliable communication capabilities in a portable, user friendly unit that can be utilized both for normal operation and mine rescue scenarios. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) have tested the Canary Go TTE communications system in the CSM Edgar Experimental Mine to determine signal propagation distances, signal quality and aspects of practical application.

"In South Africa most of the large gold mines operate between 1500m and 4500m below surface where reef is accessed initially through a vertical shaft system then via a network of tunnels and mined in either a longwall, sequential grid or scattered mining configuration. Due to the complexity of the ventilation networks used to ventilate these mines and the potential disastrous consequences associated with underground fires, it is of utmost importance that these mines are managed in such a way that underground fires are prevented. However, if they do occur the fires are managed to firstly prevent the loss of life and secondly protect the infrastructure and viability of the mine. The aim of this paper will be to: • Discuss current SA mining legislation regarding underground fire prevention and control. • Examine these fires from a risk management perspective by means of a bowtie assessment. • List and discuss the major Threats and Consequences as determined by the bowtie assessment. • Discuss the various prevention and consequence controls for deep level underground fires. • Examine how to effectively run an emergency control room. From this, a practical way of designing, implementing and managing an underground fire management system is explored. Lastly, the paper identifies new technology and ways of thinking and how these can be used to combat underground fires. INTRODUCTION The orebodies of South African gold mines are generally narrow tabular structures that vary in thickness between 0.8m and 1.2m with an inclination of between 200 and 700. This, coupled with depths of between 1500m and 4500m, as well as the unpredictable geology, creates unique challenges and significantly impacts on mine designs and mining methods. In general, gold bearing reefs are accessed initially through a vertical shaft system then via a network of tunnels and mined in either a longwall, sequential grid or scattered mining configuration (Figure 1). Mining is very labour intensive with very limited mechanisation opportunities and this increases the risk to human life if an underground fire occurs. On 16 September 1986, one of the worst mining disasters in SA mining history took place when 177 mineworkers were killed at Kinross Mine. An acetylene tank sparked flames that swept through the mining tunnel igniting plastic covering on the wiring and the flames also set fire to polyurethane foam. The burning plastic combined with polyurethane and the toxic fumes that filled the shafts caused the miners death. This incident was a stark reminder of the serious consequence that underground fires can have on human life as well as the crippling financial and asset impact for the mining companies. Over the past thirty years, the SA mining industry reduced the number of mine fires significantly by replacing normal timber support with fire retardant treated timber, alternative support systems such as backfill and elongate support and many other fire prevention initiatives. Although the number of fire incidents and number of fatalities due to fires does not show a direct correlation because of various factors, the controls put in place against fires has had an impact on the number of fire and explosion fatalities (Figure 2)."

The Carson Hill mine of the Carson Hill Gold Mining Corporation is at Melones, Calaveras County, Calif. It is one of the numerous mines on the Mother Lode of California. The property extends for 8,400 feet along the outcrop of that important vein system. The elevation at the haulage level is about 1,000 feet above sea level. This is not a conventional professional paper. It deals mostly with personal experiences. These concern a background in applied mineralogy. Your committee asked me to do this. I accepted with a California enthusiasm which has since diminished with the approach of a Chicago winter. Nevertheless, I wish to thank your committee and also to apologize in advance for omissions and inadequate statements, as such a paper must possess. My introduction to applied mineralogy took place in 1922 at Stanford University. Physicists had recently demonstrated that crystalline powders would reflect x-rays in a systematic manner. Professor A.F. Rogers sug¬gested that significant x-ray reflections might be obtained from powdered opaque minerals. With the aid of Professor D.L. Webster in the Physics Department, I constructed an x-ray diffraction outfit. It was a crude affair, but it worked. Starting with 1924, we secured recognizable patterns of a goodly number of ore minerals (1,2,3). Today x-ray diffraction outfits are common, and a card system of mineral identification is constantly used.

Empirical methods are deeply rooted in geomechanics. This is a consequence of the recognised complexity of the nature of the rock mass. The usual assumptions of material continuity, homogeneity, isotropicity and linear elasticity often assumed for soil, concrete and steel are difficult to justify in a rock mass except for mathematical convenience. These assumptions form the bases for most mechanistic, analytical and numerical methods in geomechanics. Believers in empirical methods argue that the complexity of the rock mass and its interaction with structures developed in it is adequately accounted for in empirical methods, which compensate for our ignorance.Franklin (1993) defines empirical design as quantified judgement based on experience. He further states that empirical methods often prove ‘closer’ to the ‘truth’ than the apparently more precise predictions of theoretical analysis, adding that based on real data empirical methods provide a standard against which theoretical predictions are measured and can be judged. This paper takes a critical look at the common empirical methods in geomechanics – rock mass classification systems (Bieniawski, 1973; Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974; Hoek, 1994a), Laubscher block caving design rules (Laubscher, 1994), the stability graph (Mathews et al, 1981), pillar design equations (Salamon and Munro, 1967; Hedley and Grant, 1972; and their derivatives), pillar design chart (Lunder and Pakalnis, 1997) and failure criteria (Hoek and Brown, 1980; and its derivatives). The common thread in the application of these methods is that in most cases they are often applied blindly without an understanding of the underlying assumptions and database limits. This paper emphasises that users of these methods need to know the underlying assumptions, database limits and inherent hidden risks that are often unmentionable for their satisfactory use. Finally, suggestions are provided for the efficient use of empirical methods and how they can be improved.CITATION:Suorineni, F T, 2014. Resolution Copper Mine in Arizona, USA, is planned to be a 2000 m deep panel cave mine with virgin rock temperatures exceeding 80¦C in rock with high crystalline silica content, resulting in a very challenging ventilation and cooling system design. This is one of the largest copper orebodies ever found and, with a planned rock production rate of 120 kton/day. The project is currently in its prefeasibility phase and the paper discusses features of the ventilation and cooling system design which includes multiple ventilation shafts with total primary ventilation flow of about 3000 m3/s and both surface and underground refrigeration plants producing more than 140 MW refrigeration capacity. The cooling system features large surface bulk air coolers chilling all downcast air supplemented by an underground secondary air cooler system and a chilled service water system. This will be a very challenging mine to ventilate and cool but this work has demonstrated that it will be technically achievable with the application of existing technology.CITATION:Bluhm, S, Moreby, R G, von Glehn, F and Pascoe, C, 2013. THREATS of a coming metal famine in the United States have filled many columns in magazines and newspapers in the past three years. This asserted menace has diverted attention from the actual results of recent exploration. Because no one had bothered to look into the facts, the statistical experts assumed that little ore was being found. They often subtracted the staggering tonnage of metals produced during the war from earlier published reserves, and assumed that the difference was all we had left. Naturally, they shuddered, with all possible publicity. For their figures showed an imminent lack of nearly all the metals needed for an industrial civilization, as well as for mechanized war. They concluded that only wholesale imports and development and production of metals by Federal agencies could avert the famine.

The ever -present danger of mine fires and the possibility of hazardous atmospheric conditions in underground mines make a well-equipped mine rescue station a valuable asset to any mining district . Rescue equipment without proper maintenance provides only false security , because neglect may make the apparatus unfit for use in an emergency . Promptness in fighting mine fires is important ; frequently the first 30 minutes of action are worth many hours later . Likewise , the equipment will be of little value if enough men trained in its use are not readily available . This circular points out how such protection has been provided in an Arizona mining district by establishing a well- organized , adequately equipped , central mine rescue station. ·

Spray-applied polyurethane foam was used to insulate the walls of heated rooms excavated in permafrost. The experiment was designed to determine whether polyurethane foam can be sprayed successfully on frozen ground under freezing conditions and to measure the effectiveness of the insulation in maintaining--at elevated temperatures for an extended period--a room excavated in frozen ground. Two manufacturers' foams were investigated in the laboratory. Subsequently, one of the foams was employed to insulate two small rooms, one in frozen gravel and one in frozen silt, in an experimental tunnel belonging to the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (USACRREL) near Fairbanks, Alaska. Following insulation, heat was introduced into the two rooms. Heat migration across the insulating barrier into the walls, in addition to wall closures, was monitored over an 8-month period. The results show that polyurethane foam can be successfully sprayed on frozen ground in below-freezing temperatures. Given this type of insulation, together with winter cold to supercool the surrounding ground, it should be possible to maintain a shaft or heated room in permafrost for several years.

Oil and gas within the ground are minerals and the fact that they have attributes not common to other minerals because of their fugitive nature or vagrant habit, and the disposition to percolate, and the possibility of their escape from beneath one part of the surface to another, does not remove them from the class of minerals. A corporation engaged in milling- and the reduction of ores deposited the tailings therefrom upon a portion of its own land lying in a gulch through which water flows at times in great volumes and with great force' and notwithstanding all reasonable efforts by dams and otherwise to retain its tailings, the tailings eventually were forced upon the lands of an adjoining owner; these tailings were valuable and their retreatment, intended by the mill owner, profitable; and the fact that the tailings were so washed down upon the lands of the adjoining owner and permitted to accumulate and remain for some considerable time is not sufficient to show an abandonment on the part of the owner of the tailings, where it is clear that the owner had no intention of so doing, but on the contrary, always intended to conserve and retreat the tailings.
