Paul Y. – SELI Joint Venture had been contracted to build the longest section of the Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) – Stage I. This involved two tunnels under urban and marine areas excavated by high performance hard rock open type TBMs operated from deep shafts. A specific ground treatment program was developed using advance probing and grouting to control water inflow into the excavations. The article describes: the technologies adopted, the experienced problems, the encountered productions and their interrelation with the water inflow amounts, the possible improvement in the technologies for the excavation of the future stages of the same project as well of any other project under similar conditions.

The United States Bureau of Mines frequently receives requests for information regarding the details of its organization and the nature of its activities. In response to such an inquiry a series of articles outlining the work of the bureau as a whole and of its different divisions was prepared and published in the United States Daily, Washington, D. C., during November, 1929. These articles are reprinted here in the hone that they may assist in giving the public a more complete understanding of the aims and purposes of the bureau and the methods by which it is laboring for the attainment of safer conditions and more efficient methods in American mineral industries. An index of these articles, with the dates of 'their publication in the United States Daily, is given below.

The principle objective of the research effort described herein was to identify as rapidly as possible a practical trapped miner location system. Much effort has been expended in the past on the development of a highly sophisticated seismic location system [1] for trapped miners. Field tests of this system have shown that the location accuracy is limited by a combination of seismic velocity anomalies, timing errors, and in general by the relatively weak nature of the signals received at the surface. It was first felt that similar propagation anomalies would be experienced by electromagnetic systems, but to a greater extent than the seismic. However, preliminary tests performed by Westinghouse on the Operations and Maintenance Program, Contract No. H0210063 in 1971 and 1972, indicated that an electromagnetic solution to the location problem may be more feasible than a seismic solution. Thus a more concentrated effort was launched in 1972 and 1973 to more completely determine the feasibility of electromagnetic location systems for trapped miners. Two different approaches to the location problem were undertaken on this program: (1) A pulsed electromagnetic system was developed by the Special Systems Division of Westinghouse in Baltimore, and (2) a Continuous Wave (CW) System was developed by Westinghouse Georesearch Laboratory (WGL) in Boulder, Colorado. Part I of this report will deal only with the development and results of CW Location System developed by WGL. The CW Location System was field tested at three eastern coal mines and at one western hardrock mine. The maximum overburden depth penetrated during these tests was 990 feet at the Robena No. 4 mine near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. The earth conductivity at this mine was measured to be 1. 1X102 mhos/m, which combined with the deep overburden make this mine representative of expected worst case conditions for a coal mine EM location exercise.

For the past four years Canada has been third among the gold producing countries of the world, surpassed only by the Union of South Africa, and the United States of America," and now yields somewhat more than 9 per cent of the annual output of the world."-"The Gold Situation in Canada". Bulletin of Development Branch, Canadian Pacific Railway. The history of gold mining in Canada is comparatively modern and does not take one further back than the late 'fifties of the 19th century. If the efforts of the early explorers in Canada were expended in "seeking with equal ardour, proselytes and gold", history fails of any record of their success in the search for the precious metal. As early as 1849 not a few Canadians travelled from the east by land and water to the Californian goldfields. In the then settled part of Canadathe east-people were alive to the value of any mineral discovery; but the west, owing to its remoteness and to there being no ready means of communication, was virtually isolated from the east.

ABSTRACT: In the south of the Island of Gran Canaria (Spain) there appear layers of swelling clays inside volcanic formations of a fonolitic type, down to depths as low as 500 m, with thicknesses of 1 to 3 m. Two tunnels (each of length 1,500 m) have been built in these zones (ignimbrites and swelling clays), work on which started in the ‘70s. The construction has been influenced by phenomena of expansivity and decompression. Presented below are the problems that arose, the field and indoor studies conducted and the numerical optimisation of the lining. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Süden der Insel Gran Canaria (Spanien) kommen im Inneren vulkanischer Formationen phonolithischen Typs in Tiefen von bis zu 500 Metern 1 bis 3 Meter dicke Blähtonschichten vor. In diesem Gelände aus Schmelztuff und Blähton begann man zu Beginn der siebziger Jahre, zwei Tunnel von jeweils 1.500 Metern Länge anzulegen. Die Bauarbeiten standen unter dem Einfluss von Dehnungs- und Dekompressionserscheinungen. Der folgende Text enthält eine Darstellung der aufgetretenen Probleme, der durchgeführten Feld- und Laborstudien und der numerischen Optimierung der Tunnelauskleidung. "Rock mass classification systems are often applied in many empirical design practices in rock engineering, some contrasting with the original intent and applications of these classification systems, for example, estimation of TBM performance in various ground conditions. While accurate estimation of machine performance is significantly impacted by rock mass properties, parameters used in many of the existing classifications are more related to ground support design and not rock mass boreablity. The results of many investigations on this issue have shown a weak correlation between TBM rate of penetration and rock mass classification. This limitation can be overcome by fine tuning the rock mass classification input parameters to represent influence of rock mass properties on TBM performance as has been the objective of RME or QTBM. This paper will offer an overview of the impact of rock mass on TBM performance and introduces an empirical equation for predicting performance of rock TBMs based on rock mass classification. The results of the preliminary analysis of a new model has revealed that the use of the proposed system can offer a reasonable accuracy for estimation of TBM performance in various rock masses. 1. INTRODUCTION Hard rock tunnel boring has become more or less the standard method of tunneling for tunnels of various sizes with lengths over 1.5–2 km. Estimating the performance of TBM is a vital phase in tunnel design, and for the choice of the most appropriate excavation machine. During the past three decades, numerous TBM performance prediction models for evaluation of TBM rate of penetration and advance been proposed. In brief, all the TBM performance prediction models can be divided into two distinguished approaches, namely theoretical and empirical ones (Rostami et al., 1996). The most common and recent works on this topic are summarized in Table 1. Currently, two models including Colorado School of Mines or CSM (Rostami and Ozdemir, 1993; Rostami, 1997) and Norwegian University of Science and Technology or NTNU (Blindheim, 1979; Bruland, 1998) models are the most recognized TBM performance prediction and prognosis models in use around the world."

The New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) is a proven concept for the safe and economic construction of underground facilities. This is especially true for tunnelling activity where changing ground conditions are often encountered. However, the principles central to the NATM have gained only limited use within Australia, presumably due to the measurement process inter- fering with tunnel driving and the cost associated with instrumentation and interpre- tation expertise. The design and operating principles of two basic instruments are explained together with laboratory simulated test results and suggest- ions for use in an integrated NATM style approach to underground excavation and construc- tion. The two instruments monitor load in rock reinforcement and deformation in rock or primary and secondary linings. The instruments may be fitted with a miniature display module which outputs the measured parameter in engineering units directly. The design of the sensing components allows the instruments to be installed in various configurations suitable for routine performance monitoring, quality control, support element testing or detailed investigations. The display module which reduces the need for instrumenta- tion expertise should suit contractors and allow performance data to be obtained which quickly may be used to modify support procedures to suit ground conditions. When complemented by convergence measurements the devices enable most facets of the NATM to be implemented.

Tunnel Boring Machine Instrumentation A 9.17 m. diameter tunnel boring machine presently in operation in Chicago, Illinois, has been instrumented to continuously monitor and record machine thrust, torque and penetration rate during boring. A micro-processor-based data logger capable of monitoring up to 60 channels of data digitizes and converts into appropriate engineering units the signals from various transducers mounted on the machine. The output from the data logger is sent to a teleprinter, providing a permanent record of measured data. The program control enables the data logger to scan all data channels at desired time intervals. Data obtained to date have been analyzed to determine the interrelationships of the parameters measured. Penetration rate was found to increase linearly with machine thrust with a unit increase in thrust causing more than a unit increase in penetration rate. For low thrust levels corresponding to the initial stages of a boring cycle, the penetration rate was observed to behave erratically until the thrust pressure was sufficiently high for the cutters to establish full contact with the tunnel face. Torque showed a curvilinear increase with machine thrust, reaching the design rating at about 70% of maximum available thrust. No-load torque was approximately 20% of the machine's rated torque capacity. Overall, the trends observed in measured machine parameters correlated closely with those predicted from experimental and theoretical boreability studies. In summary, the instrumentation system has mett two basic goals. First, it provided extensive and accurate boring data and secondly, it has proven that an automatic data acquisition system can be installed on a TBM and can function under adverse environment.

THE direct injection of cement grout into water-bearing fissures as a means of checking or stopping the flow of water into shafts and tunnels has been experimented with for a decade or longer and seems to have been first attempted in Europe. The earliest application of which the writer has found a record was at a shaft sunk by the Mining Society of Lens; this is described by C. Dinoire in the Transactions of the Institution of Mining Engineers.1. It is only lately, however, that the process has been entirely successful. This success has been accomplished on the Catskill Aqueduct, now under construction by the city of New York. This aqueduct includes a number of deep pressure tunnels, reached by shafts for both waterway and construction purposes. In portions of these shafts and tunnels considerable underground water was met. The contract for the first of these deep pressure tunnels was let to the T. A. Gillespie Co.; this section is known as the Rondout Siphon. It leads under the Rondout valley at a depth of from 400 to 800 ft. and is about 5 miles long. The engineers expected that considerable water would be encountered, but fortunately this was not the case except at one shaft, known as No. 4, which penetrated the rock at a junction between limestone and conglomerate. Water-bearing fissures were encountered almost immediately. At a depth of about 200 ft. a flow of 1,500 gal. per minute was struck. The shaft then contained as many pumps as could be used, and it seemed impossible to sink it further. After vain efforts had been made to proceed, John P. Hogan, a division engineer of the Board of Water Supply, suggested that cementation of the fissures be tried. The process was attempted for the first time in this country. Since the shaft was partly full of water it was necessary to drill grout holes with a diamond drill. Platforms were placed on the timbers at the water level, the diamond drill was installed and six 90-ft. holes were drilled in the bottom of the shaft. Several car loads of cement were pumped through these holes into the fissures, the drill casings being used for grout pipes. The N1 Porto tunnel project is a 650m segment of large-scale civil engineering plan to improve traffic flow between Porto’s downtown district, the Santo Antonio hospital district and the highway access. The tunnel is being excavated into a massive “Granito do Porto” granite structure, 4 – 20m below a highly urbanized environment of Porto, Portugal. The project was originally started in 2000 and was stopped due to the inability to mechanically excavate the granite rock. The city of Porto engineers then turned to traditional drilling and blasting techniques. The use of pyrotechnical delay detonators did not easily comply with the specified environmental and safety requirements concerning blast charging, firing and vibration control resulting in the process taking far too much time. The introduction of digital blasting was proposed to overcome these concerns.

"The new type shaft calciner ( SK-10 Serials) is developed and designed by CADRE itself on the basis of the conventional shaft calciner. The actual application in a number of calcinations plants have proven that they are of very good effect. Calcined coke calcining heated by the shaft calciner has a high quality, lower lost by fire. The shaft calciner needs no additional fuel when it is working. Anode Carbon Plant and calcined coke Plant commonly used the shaft calciner in domestic. The waste heat from the shaft calciner can be recuperated to generate electricity and to make the steam for produce. Exhaust waste heat is recovered by 90% or more. The new type shaft calciner's structure is optimized by computer simulation for fire-wall structure, combustion air to fuel ratio, volatile combustion is fully in use, furnace cooling zone structure, the exhaust smoking structure and calciner heat balance. Furnace structure and production operating parameters has been got the best optimized results. This paper introduces the working principle and characteristics of the shaft calciner - the equipment for calcining of the petroleum coke. It also demonstrates measured process parameters of the new type shaft calciner. Through comparison with the rotary kiln and conventional shaft calciner, it proves its own technical characteristics and advantages: higher capacity, high quality products, provides more energy for power generation, equipment operation and maintenance costs lower.IntroductionChina's petroleum coke market is mainly dominated by the delay raw petroleum coke. Rotary kiln and shaft calciner are the main process equipment for calcined petroleum coke. As the shaft calciner burning less, no external fuel, waste heat utilization is high, long service life, the utilization rate in China is more extensive than the rotary kiln."

Shotcrete is a versatile and widely utilized rock support material in mining and civil engineering projects due to its adaptability, strength, and efficient application. It immediately stabilizes rock surfaces, effectively controlling loose materials and preventing rockfalls in underground excavations. This paper focuses on assessing and analyzing data from observations of nozzlemen (shotcrete sprayers) during primary ground support activities in an underground mine. The study highlights the importance of nozzlemen’s skills in ensuring the quality of shotcrete application, which is critical for underground mining operations’ structural integrity and safety. A comprehensive training program and field support were implemented to enhance the nozzlemen’s proficiency. The training set covered theoretical knowledge and practical techniques to improve shotcrete application daily. Proficiency improvement was assessed using quantitative metrics, with rebound percentages decreasing by 5–14% as nozzleman competency increased. The results of this initiative showed significant improvements in shotcrete quality, including increased efficiency, reduced waste, and fewer reworks or rehabilitations. The findings aim to contribute to a broader understanding of best practices in shotcrete application and nozzlemen training, ultimately enhancing ground support application measures in the mining industry.

Underwater Tunnel Piercing or Lake Tap, often also called the Norwegian Method, will in many projects be an important part of the hydro electric development scheme. The very last blasting round in the Lake Dorothy Lake Tap Tunnel, which penetrated into the lake at a depth of 120 ft (36 m), was such a key step in constructing the Lake Dorothy Hydroelectric Project. A lake tap project is multidisciplinary. Besides the pure blasting and construction technique aspect, engineering geological and geometric considerations that aim to optimize the tunnel alignment making a lake tap possible at minimized risk are of significant importance. Output data from numerical model analysis of the hydrodynamics resulting from the blasting is vital for the final adjustments to the geometrical layout. The planning of monitoring systems for the surveillance of hydrodynamic impact on valves and pipes as well as control with water levels and air pressures prior to and during the blasting, are all additional crucial elements in the design. More than 600 lake taps have been successfully performed in Norway since the 1890`s. The technique, which deserves to be called well proven, has been applied mostly in the hydropower sector but over the last 20 years also for shore approaches in the oil and gas industry. The demand for this technique seems to be ever more growing.

With the growing urban population and the concern for traffic congestion and pollution (emissions control), public transportation is becoming more and more attractive to both city dwellers and managers. To gain access to the central area of the city, the sub- way remains the most viable alternative, despite its higher cost when compared to above ground or elevated transportation systems. There are relatively few regulations and criteria for subway ventilation, particularly when compared with mine ventilation. The main document that provides guidance and general recommendations for subway ventilation and environmental control is the Sub- way Environmental Design Handbook, published in 1976 (2nd edition) by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Office of Re- search and Development. Many of the subway systems in existence today have been designed and built with ventilation features adequate for normal train operation, but their design does not consider stringent criteria for such emergency conditions as a train fire in a tunnel. The National Fire Protection Association's Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit Systems known as NFPA 130 as well as the ASHRAE Handbook - HVAC Applications (1995) provide specific design and operation requirements for subway ventilation systems. Some of the existing, old subways are upgrading their ventilation systems to comply with the new regulations. The ability of a particular ventilation system design to provide adequate ventilation during normal and emergency conditions can be evaluated using computer modeling and simulation techniques. A train fire will cause a sudden change in the tunnel ventilation pattern by adding an unsteady and fast-growing source of heat. The hot air and gasses created by a fire will tend to flow uphill, possibly against the normal flow, producing a 'backlayering effect." To prevent this effect from happening, enough ventilation must be provided and the governing criterion to establish the required airflow is called 'Critical Velocity." Several software packages are available for special applications on tunnel and station ventilation as well as to model the spread of smoke and heat in case of a major tunnel fire, using Computational Fluid Dynamics. This paper presents the current issues in subway ventilation, as shared by the public transit community around the world, together with modern alternative design concepts vis-à-vis the more stringent emerging Fire-Life Safety criteria. Examples of recent studies and ventilation systems design are provided.

Granduc lies near the Alaskan border in British Columbia, about 600 miles (960 km) north of Vancouver. Prospecting in the area must take place in the short summer months of fog and rain because the winter is bitter cold, with snowfall up to 960 inches (24.4 m) accompanied by avalanches. Despite these difficulties, the mineral ized area was discovered in the 1920's. By 1956, Newmont Mining Corporation had developed mineable ore reserves estimated at 32,500,000 tons of 1.93% copper. Newmont and ASARCO, in a joint venture, then began development of the ore body, which was partially covered by glaciers. It was apparent a concentrator could not be built at the mine site where overland access was impossible due to the weather conditions and the terrain. Years of engineering studies of all possible access routes finally dictated the driving of an 11 mi long (17.6 km) tunnel passing under three glaciers and three mountain ranges to the nearest feasible concentrator site at Tide Lake. Even then, a mountain road subject to an average snowfall of 800 in. (20. 3 m) had to be built 32 mi (51 krn) from the concentrator through Alaska to Stewart, British Columbia, the nearest port. At Stewart, which is located at the head of a fjord 120 mi (192 krn) from the Pacific Odean, a fully equipped marine terminal was built. The tunnel, the lifeline between mine and mill, was to be driven from both ends; however, in 1965, an avalanche occurred at the Leduc portal, killing 26 crew members and wrecking much of the camp. The tunnel was then driven from one heading adjacent to the concentrator site at Tide Lake, a distance of 53,744 ft (16,381 m) to a point under the ore body. The remote location, type of terrain, and bad weather made supply of crews, equipment, and construction materials difficult; but in spite of these extremely adverse conditions, the tunnel crews set many world records. Mineralization throughout the ore zone is generally uniform in grade and composition and is primarily chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite associated with pyrite. Mining is mainly by sublevel caving. After blasting, rubber-tired load-and-haul equipment moves from level to level by means of an internal connecting ramp system on a 15% slope. At the gathering haulage level, 15-ton bottom-dump cars deliver the ore to a 600-ton pocket equipped with a Hudson "Rock-Flo" dump. The bottom of the ore pocket forms the feed chute to the primary

INTRODUCTION IDARADO Mining Company's mill and surface plant are at the portal of the Treasury tunnel at elevation 10,625 ft, 12 miles south of Ouray, Colo. In 1943 and 1944 this tunnel was extended in a westerly direction to tap the Black Bear vein, and, together with the recently completed 1100-ft inclined Treasury raise, provides access to the Black Bear mine. In 1945 a 250-ton mill was placed in operation to process development ores containing much needed copper, lead and zinc for war requirements, and to serve as a pilot testing unit for larger scale milling operations. In the years 1902 to 1927 some 329,000 tons of ore were produced from mine workings on the Black Bear vein that extended downward from elevation 12,325 ft at the Black Bear tunnel portal to elevation 11,618 ft, the lowest level of the mine. The ores were taken to the Cascade and Smuggler-Union mills near Telluride over two aerial tramways. Gold bullion, a copper-lead concentrate, and a zinc concentrate were produced. ORES The Black Bear is a compound fissure vein that has undergone several stages of mineralization. The first important stage is represented by complex ores of copper, lead and zinc in a quartz gangue. Precious metal content in this stage is low. The galena is argentiferous and varying amounts of tetrahedrite, freibergite and bornite tend to increase the normal copper content represented in chalcopyrite. The zinc occurs as a true sphalerite with little or no iron. Later re-openings of the fissure took place more or less co-extensively with the successive introduction of (1) abundant quartz gangue containing minor amounts of chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite; (2) free gold in a fluoritic quartz gangue; and (3) barren, low-grade quartz with minor amounts of pyrite as the only important sulphide. The sulphides show practically no oxidation and little mineralogic intergrowth. Because of the common overlapping of these successive stages of mineralization within a given mining area, considerable dilution of the base-metal content takes place, thus lowering the average mill-head grade. PLANT PRACTICE Metallurgical testing was started shortly after the Black Bear vein was encountered on Treasury tunnel level in 1944. Laboratory tests showed good flotability of the minerals in the ore and indicated an economic separation could be made of the copper, lead and zinc minerals into their respective concentrates. The success of the separation is close reagent control to maintain a balance between promotion and depression of the sulphides. To maintain this balance reagent consumption for the three metal separation is considerably higher than in ordinary lead-zinc flotation.

This report incorporates a review of available dewatering technology and an evaluation of its relevance to surface coal mines in the Interior Province of the United States. Guidelines for the selection, design and construction of dewatering systems are included. On the basis of documented experience, candidate dewatering systems were selected and evaluated with respect to their anticipated impact on the environment and mine operations. Included in the discussion is a summary of laws and regulations which can impact on dewatering operations. Following this discussion, geologic and hydrogeologic conditions within the Interior Province are described and potential dewatering problems at surface coal mines are identified. Model mines are developed which exhibit the most difficult dewatering problems identified, and it is demonstrated how available technology can be utilized to deal with these problems. Dewatering of coarse-grained, high permeability terrace deposits might be economically feasible today. Low permeability, saturated glacial tills or lake deposits appear to be significantly outside present economic feasibility for dewatering.

Papers from the Helium Centennial Symposium at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society cover the history of the discovery of helium, the history of its development by the Bureau of Mines from a laboratory curiosity to an important item of commerce, the source of helium in natural gases, the world of liquid helium, and liquid helium-3.
