THOUGH at an earlier period brief studies had been made by the Lehigh Navigation Coal Company Inc., it was not until 1924 that J. B. Warriner, then general manager, called for a comprehensive study of timber treatment, treating solutions, and related operations. Because of the impossibility of procuring accurate costs and other pertinent treating data, the American Wood Preserving Co. agreed to treat a car of mine timber at the Port Reading plant of the Reading Railroad. Fig. I shows the treating data collected at the treating plant on this timber, which was installed in two of the Lehigh mines in 1925. In the latter part of 1925, a survey of the tunnels and gangways of the company's Panther Valley mines was made to determine the proportion of gangways or tunnels timbered, cause of timber failures, approximate life of the average wood set and the approximate percentage of treated timber that it would be profitable for the company to use. Results of this survey appear in Table I. Because of the high percentage of timber that gave evidence of failure by rot, as noted in Table I, and a further study of the life of the sections where timbering was necessary, it was deemed advisable to fill 25 per cent of the yearly gangway timber requirement with treated timber. Quantities and Treatments OF Treated Timber Purchased In the early days of the program, none of the large treating companies would accept orders for small quantities of treated timber and the company was compelled to state the quantity of timber it would require at each operation in each month of the year. Table 2 is an example of the tabulation given to the various treating companies to assist them in making a yearly bid on the minimum quantity of timber required by the company during the year 1931. A bill of timber was calculated for each car, the weight of which would be between the minimum and maximum weight permitted for railroad-car loading. The treating company was paid for timber upon delivery at the operation specified. As extra cars of timber were required, they were ordered from the treating company, and payment was required On their receipt, on the basis of the piece or tonnage

Introduction Though temporarily shutdown due to the depressed economy, the Henderson mine is a large underground molybdenite producer, using a continuous panel-caving mining system. The location of the ore body requires access from the surface through three shafts, the collars of which are located about 3.15 km (10,350 ft) above sea level. At this altitude, normal temperatures are such that heat must be added to intake-ventilation air for about half of each year. This prevents ice from building up in the intake shafts, waterlines from freezing underground, employee discomfort, and equipment-related problems such as pneumatic rock drill icing and cold starting of diesel engines. Because of topographic and environmental constraints, the Henderson mill and concentrator are located 24 km (15 miles) from the mine, on the west side of the Continental Divide. All ore from the mine is transported to the mill by an electrified rail haulage system, with 15.4 km (9.6 miles) of the trip being underground through a double-track tunnel. A shaft at the midpoint of the tunnel exhausts air drawn from the mine and from the portal that is at an elevation of 2.7 km (8,950 ft). Intake air at the portal must be heated for part of the year to prevent ice buildup. Mine Ventilation System The mine ventilation system uses three sources of fresh air and two exhausts. The primary freshair intake is No. 3 shaft. It is concrete lined to a diameter of 7 m (23 ft) for a total depth of 698 m (2,291 ft). An airflow of 755 m3/s (1.6 mil¬lion cfm) is supplied to this shaft by two vane-axial 932-kW (1,250-hp) fans on the surface. The air is distributed within the mine by means of fresh-air distribution levels connected to production and development levels by raises. A secondary source of fresh air to the mine is provided by No. 2 shaft, the primary man and material access. This shaft is concrete lined to a diameter of 8.5 m (28 ft) for a total depth of 946 m (3,105 ft). Downcast airflow is induced by a pressure differential produced by the fans in the system such that net intake and exhaust volumes are equal. The No. 2 shaft flow of 165 m3/s (350,000 cfm) enters the mine network from the production and haulage levels. Exhaust air is moved from the various working levels through connecting raises to exhaust col¬lection levels that return it to No. 1 shaft. No. 1 shaft is the primary mine exhaust. It is concrete lined to a diameter of 7 m (23 ft) for a total depth of 788 m (2,584 ft). Three vane-axial 932-kW (1,250-hp) exhaust fans are located at the collar of No. 1 shaft, producing a flow of 850 m3/s (1.8 million cfm). In addition, an airflow of 71 m3/s (150,000 cfm) from the intake distribution level is exhausted via the haulage tunnel, by means of No. 4 shaft located midway in the tunnel. The main features of the mine ventilation network are summarized in Fig. 1. Ventilation Air-Heat Plants No. 3 Shaft In the early design phase of No. 3 shaft, it was recognized that air heating would be required to maintain underground temperatures above 0°C (32°F) during cold winters in the Colorado mountains. The South African mining industry currently installs about 6 km per month of plastic pipes for conveying compressed air and water. Plastic pipes have a number of desirable properties and are favoured by many mining engineers because of their low mass, which facilitates ease of erection and assembly, and their excellent corrosion resistance and durability. However, they are combustible, and if involved in an underground fire can contribute to the overall toxicity of the combustion gases emitted. Furthermore, plastic pipes have the potential to conduct a fire from one part of a mine to another, and, by so doing, exacerbate an already hazardous situation. The limitations of small scale tests and the need to establish a large facility where underground conditions could be simulated was recognized by the South African mining industry. This paper briefly describes the Industry's full scale fire test facility and presents the conclusions drawn as a result of a number of full scale combustibility tests conducted on pipes manufactured from unplasticized Poly Vinyl Chloride (uPVC) and High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). Based on these findings, some practical solutions to prevent the spread of fire along the length of pipe columns of various pipe diameters and suspension configurations are presented. Recently some new and exciting developments in the field of intumescent coatings have occurred which are proving effective in minimizing the incidence of fire underground on South African mines. The potential benefits of these coatings are briefly discussed. INTRODUCTION Plastic pipes used underground on mines are predominantly in the form of protective cladding on insulated chilled water pipes and as service pipes for the conveying of water and compressed air to the workings. Plastic pipes have found wide use in the aggressive environmental conditions encountered underground due to their favourable properties relative to steel; these include being lightweight, easily installed and virtually immune to corrosion. However, plastic pipes are inherently combustible and can contribute to the overall hazard in three ways: (i) they are easily ignitable and can provide the initial fuel for a fire. (ii) once ignited, they can propagate a fire along their length and by so doing ignite other combustibles in their path, thereby contributing significantly to the overall conflagration. (iii) they can contribute to the overall heat, smoke and toxic gas emissions from a fire. While conscious of the value of small scale fire tests, the South African mining industry recognized the need for full scale testing to determine the combustion characteristics of plastic pipes under conditions closely approximating those underground and, as a consequence, a full scale fire tunnel test facility was commissioned with the objective of being able to (a), accurately evaluate the potential hazard of the various types of the plastic pipes found in mines, (b) use this information to suggest suitable fire engineering practices to minimize the hazard and (c), to practically verify the efficacy of the practices suggested. THE FIRE TUNNEL The fire tunnel is situated on a mine in the Western Transvaal and is 40 m long with a cross section of 3 m x 3 m which is typical of many haulages currently in use in South African gold mines. The ventilation drawn through the tunnel is provided by a 110 kW centrifugal exhaust fan and air velocities can be varied from 0 to a maximum of 5,8 m/s.

Roof bed separation often occurred due to the deformation incoordination of surrounding rock following the excavation of mine roadway. Bed separation has effect on the bolts, and the estimation of the influence will directly affect the safety of support systems. In this paper, the hyperbolic function model to analyze the load transfer mechanism on the bolts was simplified as the exponential function form for easy calculation. An elastic-plastic analysis model of the bolt loading occurred by the bed separation was established. And the development low that the bed separation affected to the bolt loading was discussed. According to the parameters analysis of different separation values and locations, the influence law of the bolt loading caused by roof bed separation was summarized. Finally, the effects of bed separation were considered for the bolting design, it was able to provide a reference to the anchorage design of stratified rock.

Other than being used to convey fill material for the gob stowage or building of ribside packs on advancing longwell faces, pneumatic conveying has not been used for the transport of materials on a large scale in mining operations. The technique is extensively used in the wood products industry for conveying wood chips, limestone and other ingredients for the manufacture of paper, for the transfer from railcars, barges or ships to silos or stockpiles and further transfer into the pulp mills. This method of material transfer has the distinct advantage of transporting suitable material over horizontal and vertical distances within the same system. In considering material associated with mining, this includes, ore, coal and rock up to 4 inch cubed size, throughputs of 200 tons per hour over horizontal distances of 3000 feet or vertical lifts of 2000 feet. In recent years tests have been carried out to determine the physical and economic limitations of pneumatic hoisting, the results of which have led to the installation of two fully productive coal hoisting systems at mines of the National Coal Board in Great Britain. The equipment used for the pneumatic hoisting of coal or waste rock is described in this paper, together with a brief history of the tests which led up to the installation of the two hoisting systems in Great Britain.

ALTHOUGH Cerro de Pasco was well known since the early sixteen hundreds as one of the major silver districts of the Andes, its development on a modern scale did not occur until the first decade of the present century when a syndicate organized by James B. Haggin initiated the enterprise that eventually grew into the complex and widespread operations of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation. Options on a few claims in Cerro de Pasco that had been brought to New York in 1900 came to the attention of A. W. McCune, a mining man from Salt Lake City, who took them to Haggin and soon succeeded in interesting that creative mining financier in the possibilities of the district. James MacFarlane, an engineer well known to both Haggin and McCune, was sent to Peru early in 1901 to make the initial examinations which promptly led to acquisition of a substantial group of claims in the heart of the mineralized area. A syndicate to which Haggin turned over his rights was organized on Feb. 26, 1902 to provide the necessary funds. The original members were J. B. Haggin, who retained a 34 per cent interest, Edward H. Clark (for Mrs. Phoebe Hearst, the widow of Haggin's old associate, George Hearst), H. McK. Twombly, H. C. Frick, D. O. Mills, and J.P. Morgan.

Pentolite is a class of high explosives containing trinitrotoluene (TNT) and pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) with PETN content typically ranging from 40 to 60 wt%. Manufacture involves melting TNT, 80 °C, followed by addition of PETN and trace ingredients to form a homogeneous mixture. Once a mix is ready to be poured, several factors can influence the behavior of the finished product including how long the mix has been at temperature and cooling rate. After the manufacturing process has been completed, storage conditions combined with manufacturing conditions may cause physical changes. Two such changes explored were exudation, liquid exuding from solid boosters, and ratchet growth, irreversible volumetric expansion. Exudation is principally caused by excess water in the process. Ratchet growth is a common phenomenon of nitroaromatic compounds such as TNT where time and temperature fluctuations can cause materials to increase volume, simultaneously decreasing density. Although neither phenomenon affects common attributes such as sensitivity, performance, and shelf-life, both can cause issues in storage and handling. In this study pentolite was cast into various forms under different manufacturing conditions and evaluated over several months of controlled storage conditions including ambient, temperature cycling and elevated isothermal. Subjective and objective measurements were made throughout the evaluation period with the aim to determine the preferred storage methodology.

This report describes work performed and results obtained for the technical and economic feasibility study of oil production by mining methods. The characteristics of oil fields which would make them amenable to mining techniques were identified. An inventory of known U.S. oil fields that offer this potential was collated. This was further divided into fields having potential for underground and surface mining systems development. Several candidate fields that fit particular underground and surface mining system types were then selected. Conceptual mining systems were designed for the selected fields. Five underground and four surface methods were chosen. Costs of oil production were estimated for these selections. The impact of oil mining an the environment was also considered.

Mine tunnel support using rockbolts was introduced in UK coal mines over the period 1987- 1992 and is now used in over 70% of all mine tunnels. In every case the reinforcement design has been based on the observational approach. After the initial reinforcement design has been established appropriate action levels are defined for predetermined amounts of movement indicating the onset of instability. If the action levels are exceeded appropriate remedial action is taken usually in the form of additional support or reinforcement to maintain stability. This paper outlines the observational design method as used in UK coal mine tunnels. It discusses the low cost instrumentation which has been developed to monitor roof deformation, dual height telltales, how action levels are defined based on the geotechnical environment and the types of remedial measures typically taken. An alternative approach for dealing with areas of increased deformation involves reacting to early roof movement trends and modifying the support installed at the face of the development accordingly. Installation of additional support at the face of the heading improves ground control in poor geotechnical conditions and has the advantage of potentially reducing later additional support costs. A case study is described to illustrate how 'early' action levels can be incorporated into a roof support plan enabling a flexible roof support strategy. Such a system will be site specific and continued analysis of monitored information will be required to confirm the action levels or to adjust them according to any change in geotechnical environment. More accurate roof deformation monitoring systems, such as the Remote Reading Telltale system recently developed by Rock Mechanics Technology Ltd. (RMT) and currently undergoing Mines Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval, are ideally suited to this application. The Remote Reading Telltale system provides accurate mine wide monitoring of roof condition on a surface PC.

INTRODUCTION Content of this Report The 1300m long twin-bore 8.1m diameter Airside Road Tunnels (ART) were excavated beneath the busy taxiways and stands of Heathrow Airport between 2002and 2003. The tunnels were fully completed and handed over to the client for use early in 2005. This paper will describe the purpose of the tunnels, and the measures put in place to minimize the impact of construction on the daily activities involved in running an international airport. Terminal 5 Construction Heathrow Airport is the busiest international airport in the World, with a current capacity of circa 67 million passengers per year, based on existing infrastructure of4 passenger terminals, 1 cargo terminal, 2 runways and 170 aircraft stands. Terminal 5(T5) is being built to increase Heathrow’s passenger capacity by providing the following: 12 additional aircraft stands through redevelopment of the south apron area, in the autumn of 2004 A main terminal building (T5A) and a first satellite (T5B), and 43 additional stands by the spring of 2008, most of which will be able to receive the new generation large aircraft (Airbus A380) A second optional satellite (T5C) by year 2010 A third optional satellite (T5D) by year 2015 The total value of the project is approximately 4.2 billion pounds for the main phase of the works spanning from 2000 to 2007. Purpose of the Airside Road Tunnel The ART has been constructed to support the internal road traffic of the airport between terminals, aircraft stands, runways and taxiways, for passenger buses, service and technical vehicles. The majority of the traffic will be buses transporting passengers between the terminals and their aircraft.

"The adoption of tunneled combined sewerage interceptors and outfalls leads to design linings which are often subject to internal pressures that are larger than the external pressures, resulting in significant tension loads. The need to meet stringent durability conditions for the normal design life of 100 years often drives client specifications to require a double pass solution with a cast in situ secondary concrete lining. However, improvements in concrete technology and the need to seek efficiency in terms of time and costs, have driven designers to consider single pass segmental linings. The Riachuelo Sanitation project in Buenos Aires is subject to these constraints both upstream and downstream of a sewage treatment plant. This paper describes how the challenges of up to 2 bar pressure differential have been addressed by careful analysis of soil structure interaction to ensure that the full benefit of external ground pressure is realized, resulting in a more optimal design for the constructor both in terms of cost and time. INTRODUCTION The construction of long sewerage interceptors and outfalls is becoming an increasingly common piece of infrastructure for modern urban cities facing a large water front and estuarine conditions, which are under a significant environmental burden imposed by decades of sustained growth. Such works intercept most of the distributed sewage discharges to then divert them to a central treatment point from which it will be finally diffused via an outfall into a water body capable to accept these discharges under acceptable environmental conditions. Depending on the magnitude of the sewage load to be handled, the configuration of the urban environment and the conditions of the receiving water body, both in terms of oceanography forces and seabed conditions, these schemes will vary in length, conveyance capacity and design and construction requirements. When conditions permit, the current trend is the execution of long outfalls using flexible solutions (such as the use of HDPE pipes) which usually require some form of concrete ballasted weights to resist off shore dynamic forces when directly laid over the sea bed. However, this concept faces limitations when the conveyance requirements indicate the need for large diameters (typically above 3000 m) and also when the outfall needs to avoid deep features off shore such as navigation channels. When this occurs, tunneling, particularly segmentally lined tunnel constructed by TBM emerges as the most feasible approach for large diameter, long deep outfalls. The operating conditions often result in internal pressures that are larger than the external pressures, resulting in significant tension loads in the lining. The need to meet stringent durability conditions for the normal design life of 100 years often drives client specifications to require a double pass solution with a cast in situ secondary concrete lining."

Fires that occur in abandoned coal mines, waste banks, and in coal outcrops constitute a serious health, safety, and environmental hazard. Toxic fumes, the deterioration of air quality, and subsidence constitute the greatest hazards from these fires. Although tires on abandoned mined land (AML) occur in every coal-producing state, the severity of the problem varies. Methods to extinguish or control AML fires, including excavation, fire barriers, and sealing, are generally expensive and have a relatively low probability of success This U.S. Bureau of Mines report includes information from a variety of sources, i.e., agencies of the Federal Government, State agencies, research reports, conference proceedings, product information, and technical literature. This information has been collated into a comprehensive discussion of AML fire problems. Data on past fire control projects and on the estimated extent of the current problem have been compiled. Factors affecting the occurrence, propagation, and extinguishment of AML fires are discussed. Conventional fire control methods are described, and their probable effectiveness is evaluated. Information on the hazards of AML fires and safety considerations is included. The status of current technology, recent improvements in fire control methods, and areas of current research are discussed.

Many articles have been written on the general principles and details of gold dredging, a but it is not possible within the limits of this paper to recapitulate them, and it is thus necessary to assume some knowledge of this literature by the readers of this paper. Although the purpose of this paper is to describe gold dredging in Montana, a brief mention of some early appliances used in New Zealand, Australia, and California may serve as a world-connecting link in our consideration of the development of gold dredging. DREDGES EARLY USED IN NEW ZEALAND, AUSTRALIA, AND CALIFORNIA. Spoon dredges operated by hand were tried in New Zealand on rich spots in the Clutha River with some success as early as 1865. A dredge of this kind is shown in Plate I, A. In 1870 a modification of the spoon, operated by steam and being thus a primitive steamshovel dredge, was worked in New Zealand. Steam-shovel dredging was attempted in California as early as 1888 and 1893, and with some success in later years. The elevator gold dredge with endless bucket chain was put into operation in New Zealand in 1882. Plate I, B, illustrates a type of this dredge operated by current wheels. Plate II, A, shows a steam-operated dredge of this class, also started in 1882. In 1897 R. H. Postlethwaite, connected with the Risdon Iron Works, San Francisco, introduced the dredging practice of New Zealand into California. The first dredge built sank in the turbulent current of the Yuba. The second at Oroville, owned and operated by W. P. Hammon, proved effective and was the start in California of successful gold dredging. Since then the growth of the golddredging industry in California has been so rapid that the gold output from dredges in that State exceeds that of all other States in the Union, and, in fact, of any other country of the world, the value of the gold produced in California by dredging from 1897 to the end of 1914 having been about $71,000,000.

"In deep excavations under conditions of high ground stress, even hard rock undergoes creep and other time-dependent effects that may result in instability. This study involves an analysis of the typical damage to the surrounding rock in the deep tunnels of the Jinchuan nickel mine in China. In order to understand the creep mechanism, triaxial creep laboratory tests were conducted under high stress. The creep characteristic curves and the Nishihara model parameters of typical rock were obtained from these tests. The numerical simulations, with which the creep model is developed, were performed using Flac3D. The creep model parameters were back-analysed on the basis of field monitoring data. Finally, appropriate support schemes for deep tunnels are suggested. The creep deformation of rock increases with time and axial load. At the same load level, the creep deformation of unloading is greater than that of loading. The simulated deformations of the surrounding rock are coincident with those from in situ monitoring, indicating the applicability of the presented rock creep model in situations of high ground stress. The results constitute a reference for support design in deep mining tunnels.IntroductionThe excavation of underground caverns can alter the natural stress field of the surrounding rock. In deep engineering projects under conditions of high ground stress, even hard rock shows obvious creep properties and time effects (Yao, 2005; Liu, 1994). The time effect of excavation not only causes decompression of the floor and increases sidewall stress, but also leads to stress concentration at the corners of the excavation, which influences the stability of the surrounding rock in a very complex manner.Many researchers have studied the creep properties of rock. ‘Griggs (1939) showed that creep occurs in sandstone, shale, and silty sandstone rock under the load of 12.5%–80% of the failure load.’ Subsequently, much research has been published on rock creep tests, including the uniaxial compressive creep test, the triaxial compressive creep test, the discontinuity rock shearing test, and field tests (Wawersik, 1974; Amadei et al., 1980; Okubo et al., 1991; Jin et al.,1995). A rheological model is used to describe the complex rheological deformation of material. This model is based on various fundamental parameters including rock elasticity, plasticity, and viscous properties, which can be combined into a constitutive model to reflect the rheological properties of various types of rocks. Wang et al. (2014) studied the creep– damage–rupture characteristics of rock salt by applying a creep-damage model. Munson (1997) developed a multi-mechanism constitutive model of creep of polycrystalline rock salt based on steady-state creep and modified it to incorporate transient creep through work hardening and recovery. An elasto-viscoplastic approach was developed to simulate the timedependent nature of the fracture zone (Malan, 1999). Rheological models were proposed to understand the collapse of iron ore mines in Lorraine by Dragan et al. (2003)."

INTRODUCTION The Metropolitan Expressway Central Circular Route with a total length of approximately 47 km is located outside the Inner Circular Route of Tokyo (at a radius of approximately 8 km from the city center). Sections with a length of approximately26 km, slightly less than 60% of the total length, on the east and north sides are in ser-vice. Completing the Central Circular Route (Figure 1) is expected to enable through traffic concentrated at the city center to get around, and to form a well balanced trans-port network, which will alleviate traffic congestion considerably. The Central Circular Shinjuku Route, a section with a length of approximately 11 km on the west side, is now being constructed at a fast pace. The route is being built mainly by the shield tunneling method to carry out work smoothly under a trunk highway carrying heavy traffic and to reduce adverse effects of tunneling work on residents in the neighborhood. Shield tunnels have recently been becoming longer and deeper, and no secondary linings have been used in an increasing number of cases because of the over-crowding of cities or the reduction of budgets for public works. Economical, durable and high-quality segments have been required for linings of shield tunnels. Segments are made of concrete, steel, cast iron or combination thereof. Concrete segments are generally used in shield tunnels of medium to large diameter. Concrete segments are highly durable and resistant to compression, so they are highly resistant to earth pres-sure, water pressure and jack thrust. They are, however, heavy and have low tensile strength, so they are brittle and their corners are likely to spall. Concrete segments should therefore be handled carefully.[1] The authors have developed a steel fiber reinforced highly flowable concrete segment (referred as SFRC segment) that overcomes the weaknesses of concrete segments[2] to construct economical, durable and high-quality linings. SFRC segments have been applied to outbound sections SJ51 through SJ53 of the Central Circular Shinjuku Route. Unlike conventional concrete segments (referred as conventional RC segments), SFRC segments are made of steel fiber reinforced self-compacting highly flowable concrete. SFRC segments require less reinforcing bars than conventional RC segments because steel fibers are expected to work as reinforcements. Mine inspection in Alaska by the Federal mine inspector was somewhat handicapped during 1915,the inspector having to spend a large part of the summer and fall in examining the Matanuska coal field in connection with the designation of the Government reservations and the leasing units in that field. However, in addition to>this work, the mines in southeastern and southwestern Alaska were inspected by both Federal and Territorial inspectors, a considerable number of men near the Federal inspector's officeat Juneau were trained in first aid to the injured and in the use of mine rescue apparatus, the mines of the interior and of Seward Peninsula were inspected by the Territorial inspector, and a suit was brought in the name of the Territorial inspector for the nonreporting of serious accidents under the Territorial inspection law. The work of the Federal inspector was handicapped also by a lack of field assistants. This condition is likely to be serious, as preparations have been made for opening the Matanuska, Bering River, and Nenana coal fields, and a number of permits granting the free use of 10-acre tracts in other fields throughout the Territory have been issued. The need of a comprehensive inspection law and experienced engineers to safeguard the opening of coal mines by operators who are not familiar with coal mining and are using inexperienced help is obvious.

"High temperature and humidity at the working negatively affect safety and health in deep and hot underground mines. It is necessary to predict during design the dynamic changes in temperature with heat and moisture emitted into the mine ventilation-thermal-humidity (VTH) system from various sources such as auto-compression, wall of strata, mining equipment and workers. Currently available mine ventilation and climate models are either furnished with a simplified, step-change-type (SCT) model for thermal solver (such as in Climsim, VnetPC, Minevent, MFire, etc), or with more advanced models to account for the “thermal history effect” (also known as thermal flywheel effect), such as in Ventsim and MULTIFLUX. The goal is to quantify the modelling error caused by the lack of variable thermal history component in the SCT model. Two models are compared: one with and one without the thermal history component in long, single airway examples with long-term climate simulations for 20 years assuming an input air temperature with daily variation. The examples illustrate the magnitude and the time-lag phase of the variation of the modelling errors with space, time and model conditions. Large errors are shown in the order of +14°C and –7°C errors, persistent for long time periods, up to 20 days in one example.INTRODUCTIONIt is important to predict the heat and humidity distributions during the design of hot and humid underground mines for the safety and health of the workers. The feasibility of extracting a rich deposit in great depth may depend on the extent of ventilation and mine climatization for maintaining an acceptable working environment. The cost of ventilation and cooling may be substantial, up to 40–50% of the total energy cost of mining (Clausen, 2017). The accuracy of model solution is important in view of the low profit margin in mine feasibility for deep and hot mines. Safety and health of the miners, the primary concerns, are therefore inherently connected to finding ever better solutions in simulation methods and ventilation control techniques."

Variations in many aspects of physical and chemical grade are often of concern to mining operations and mineral processing plants. In most circumstances these amounts of variation are predictable. At the time of planning new operations, we should be able to predict the amount of sampling and testing variation which our sampling devices, laboratory procedures and on-stream analysis devices will achieve. We should know how well our stockpiles, reclaimers and bins will homogenise material (or whether segregation will actually increase the amount of variation). We should be able to predict the amounts of variation that will occur on the important time or tonnage scales at the crucial p oints in our proposed operation. And once these amounts of variation are reliably known, mine planning will seem a little bit more like dealing with known knowns rather than like dealing with unknown unknowns.The first step towards quantifying amounts of variation for planned operations is to assess amounts of variation for existing operations. How many operations have estimates of amounts of variation in their databases? How often are people able to partition amounts of variation into amounts due to sampling error, amounts due to sample preparation, amounts due to assaying, and the amount of real variation in the stream of material?CITATION:Robinson, G K, 2012. This trend, away from outdoor storage piles, will probably continue at a stronger pace in the 1980's.
