According to site measurement and labora- tory experiment, the authors suggest a new mathematical model of grouted rock bolts. The rock bolt is taken as an elastic bar, and the grout is substituted by a set of springs the rigidity of which is given as K. Based on certain assumptions, a simplified formula is deduced. When the category of rock, depth of tunnel, the spacing of rock bolts and the rigidity of springs K values are given, so that we can calculate the radius of plastic zone, and subsequently the convergence of rock at the tunnel inner surface u, and the resis- tance exerted by the rock bolt p. Finally, the length of rock bolt can be determined.

The main thrust of this paper covers the design, installation techniques and experience associated with the installation of eleven 1.5 m (4'-11") and three 2.87 m (9'-5") diameter shafts in 15 to 23 meters (50 to 75 ft) of water over 1.6 Km (a mile) out in the Atlantic Ocean. The approach implemented, permits the use of pre-fabricated shaft linings and incorporates a safe dry-tap method for connecting the offshore shafts to tunnels driven blind from deep land shafts over 4.8 Km (3 miles) away. This tunnel-shaft system is a unique venture employed at the Seabrook Nuclear Power Station to meet plant cooling water requirements.

Use has been made of several theoretical models to predict radiation levels in underground uranium mines. The models used are the Evans model, the Thomas-Epps mine model, the isolated mine model, the mine tunnel with no air flow and the mine tunnel with air flow (Beckman and Holub). Calculations based on the above models have been extended to include thoron gas and its progeny, a common occurrence in some Canadian uranium mines. Theoretical predictions include radon and thoron progenies WLs and concentrations, and some ratios of great practical interest. The main differences between the models are pointed out and comparison is made with experimental data gathered during the last three years in several Canadian underground uranium mines.

Void detection and identification of bed separation while drilling holes in rocks for roof bolting can be a great source of information for the evaluation of ground conditions and adjustment of ground control or support measures. This can be accomplished through the monitoring and analysis of drilling parameters by the roof bolter. This paper reviews work currently under way in a joint study between Penn State University and J. H. Fletcher & Co. The detection of voids, along with identification of rock types, can lead to development of 3D roof maps, which can subsequently be used to evaluate ground support and its suitability for given ground conditions in tunneling and mining operations. Existing algorithms for void detection utilize the sensory information of the drill unit, such as feed and rotary pressure, revolutions per minute (RPM), and penetration rate, to detect voids or joints on the roof/ ribs. While the void detection algorithms are being revised to allow analysis of available data from the existing sensory systems of the roofbolters with higher accuracy and lower number of false detections, additional sensors have been added to the drill to improve its ability for accurate detection of the voids and joints. This includes installation of vibration and acoustic sensors on a drilling unit at J. H. Fletcher & Co., and pertinent data analysis which are discussed in this paper. Initial results indicate that the data obtained by vibration and acoustic sensors at high sampling rates can be used to improve the performance of the void detection algorithms independently, and when combined with the modified algorithms using existing sensors, it can substantially improve the capabilities of current void detection system.

I presume that the questioner is not asking about the reduction of sulfate in groundwater to hydrogen sulfide as a result of biological activity promoted by organics in the grout hardener and that the question relates to sulfate attack on cementitious grout systems. For the project in Spain presented in my paper, we used a very high pulverized fuel ash (PFA) content in the cementitious material. This gives good sulfate resistance and indeed the chemical interaction will actually cause the permeability to drop for about 50 years without any question of sulfate attack and damage to the whole thickness of the grout - of course there will be attack at the exposed face of the grout where it is in contact with the contaminated groundwater. The mix had over 75% PFA, and also a very high overall cementitious content. The mix was the contractor's design and showed excellent behavior in laboratory proving trials. In grouts as distinct from concrete, PFA gives significantly better sulfate resistance than ground granulated blast furnace slag which is often used in Europe as a component of bentonite-cement mixes for slurry trench cut-off walls.

Under sponsorship of the USBM and later of the DOE, a new type of rotary rock drill has been developed by The Bendix Corporation. Originally developed for the production of holes for the installation of longer than seam height roof bolts, the flexible drill is a useful tool for many drilling applications. This drill allows hands-off or remote production of holes for increased drilling speed and greater operator safety in any strata suitable for rotary drilling. The paper discusses various applications and experience for the flexible drill system in coal mining, metal/nonmetal mining, and for general civil engineering uses. Manual, remote control, and automatic roof bolter modules are also discussed.

The Morenci In-pit Crusher and Conveyor System has been designed with safe production and cost savings in mind. Large open pit mines around the world have been installing semi-mobile crushers and linking them with a pit conveyor system to lower unit cost. At Morenci two 60/89 in. gyratory crushers are incorporated into the semi-mobile crushing plants. The ore is reduced to -8 in. and transported out of the mine on a 60 in. steel cable belt. This paper includes an overview of the Morenci In-pit Crusher and Conveyor System from the drawing board to open pit installation and finally a discussion on operating and repair considerations.

Underground mines are complex environments that require continuous control and monitoring actions in order to have a safe and efficient operation. At Nexa, the goal of achieving "zero harm" promotes the constant search for in its operational processes. Currently, there are manual activities that reduce the agility and precision when working with information from inside the mine, using mostly radio communication and management by sight of badges as an operational standard. This project was born in the context of increasing the operational safety of underground mines, bringing gains to the entire process involving the underground.

The last decade has seen a resurgence of interest in lunar exploration and the emergence of countries like China and India as space fairing nations. In 2004, the US announced a new Vision for Space Exploration, whose objectives focused on human missions to the Moon and then Mars. The near future is likely to see the emergence of a worldwide drive to revisit the Moon as the first step in investigating the Solar System. To date, the Apollo missions provide our only experience of human operations on the Moon or anywhere else beyond Low Earth Orbit. Much was learned from these missions. However, their short duration means that many of the environmental effects that will be important for longer-duration missions could not be quantified. In addition, long-duration missions and infrastructure on the Moon require new technologies and capabilities, which must operate successfully and reliably in this lunar environment. Developing these technologies poses significant challenges for the exploration program. The paper discusses the risks associated with the construction of lunar surface and underground structures and the challenges to adopting the standards and rock mass classification systems developed on Earth and their applicability to the Moon. Moreover, an exchange of views to explore near-surface geologic and geotechnical profiles of the Moon is emphasized and implications of the lack of knowledge on rock mass characterisation of the Moonrock mass, the lack of theoretical/empirical experience on the use of rock mass systems outside Earth, and uncertainties.

This paper describing mining practices at the United Verde copper mine, Jerome, Ariz., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts f the United States. At present mining operations are being conducted both underground and by electric shovels in an open pit. The open-pit work has been described by E. M. J. Alenius in a previous publication of the Bureau of Minos;3 the present paper will be confined to a description of the underground mine. The underground methods comprise horizontal cut-and-fill, shrinkage with delayed filling, horizontal square-set, inclined square-set, and top slice. The normal daily production of the underground mine is 3,000 tons of copper ore per day, requiring the employment of 900 men underground.

The Silver Line Phase III Project is the final one mile underground segment of the new Bus Rapid Transit in downtown Boston. The project is expected to significantly reduce existing and anticipated traffic congestion. The twin one-lane tunnels and two station platforms will be built by NATM in Boston saturated soft clay, sand and till layers in proximity to several historical buildings, underpinning two existing cut and cover subway stations and several major utilities in densely built urban area. "When completed, 520 Park Avenue will amend the Manhattan skyline and be one of the most prestigious high rise towers in New York City. The 52-story condominium building is located on a 60 by 100 feet lot on East 60th Street between Park and Madison Avenues. The geographically complex site is bounded by two fragile 5-story masonry buildings on the east and west, a mid-rise building on the north, and a New York City subway tunnel on the south. To add to this complexity, the ambitious development required 70 to 80 feet of excavation, mostly below groundwater level in highly permeable rock, to accommodate four levels of cellars. The new building also cantilevers 24 feet over a five-story historic building on the east. The limited footprint of the building coupled with large compressive and tensile axial loads, considerable base shear and over-turning moments, and the required deep excavation, presented unique foundation challenges. This paper describes how the challenges were solved with an innovative combination of permanent secant pile walls and drilled shafts.INTRODUCTIONThe project site is located at 45 East 60th Street, on the block bounded by East 61st Street to the north, East 60th Street to the south, Park Avenue to the east, and Madison Avenue to the west. As shown in Fig. 1, the site is surrounded on three sides by buildings sensitive to differential settlement. In addition, a NYCT underground subway structure lies below East 60th Street approximately 13 feet south of the site. The base of the subway structure is approximately 42 feet below the street.The project consisted of constructing a 52-story tall building. A portion of the superstructure cantilevers 24 feet over an adjacent five-story historic building. The underground construction for the new building involved a four-level basement, extending about 60 feet below ground surface. The excavation subgrade is much deeper than both the subway structure and the adjacent shallowly-founded building foundations."

During mining, the stress in the coal face varies, and, at the same time, the gas flows from the coal body into the excavation, which will cause the gas pressure to change continuously. Assuming the coal gas content of the coal to be constant, and applying the law of energy conservation, the influence of stress concentration on the gas pressure was analysed. It was found that the stress is proportional to the gas pressure. Finally, as a result of analysis and the law of gas flow, the gas pressure dynamic distribution ahead of tunnelling was modelled, and the mechanism by which blasting induces outburst was explained by making use of the model. The Earth Pressure Balanced (EPB) shields designed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., are recently more enthusiastically accepted by tunnel boring specialists. This company having built 1,000 tunnel shields utilizes its vast experience to resolve the problem to excavate through big boulders scattered in rather soft alluvial soil. Several types of EPB shields which can cope with large size boulders are described. Such shields are equipped with both drag bits and rolling disc cutters on the cutterheads. Previously removal of boulders has presented safety problems for workers while in the muck chamber, or venturing in front of the shield. This report describes the problem and how the equipment was modified to deal with the problem.

In underground coal mining many excavated openings have a relatively short projected life span. To ensure safety for men and materials at a minimum cost over the projected operating life, only pillars for overburden support and roof bolts for support of the openings are used extensively. Mining activity constantly changes the geometry of the mine producing load changes on the structural support members of the openings that often induce unstable deformations which can lead to roof falls or pillar failures. The paper describes how simple deformation measurements can be used to design primary and supplementary roof supports and to predict roof falls and possibly pillar bumps. Specifically, bed separations in the roof measured directly with the help of borescopes and calculated from differential convergence data are used to optimize bolt links or support requirements for chemical stabilization of mine roofs. Roof falls are predicted on the basis of admissible values for cumulative convergence between roof and floor, convergence rate, and the change of the rate of convergence. The pillar extraction operations convergence anomalies detected from contouring identify bump prone pillars, while convergence and pillar dilation determine the yield zone in a pillar to verify pillar softening and de-stressing. Various geophysical tools have been tested over the last eight years to evaluate their usefulness in defining damaged rock zones in an underground facility at the WIPP site in New Mexico. These tools include direct current and frequency domain electrical methods and seismic tomography. The electrical measurements show a "drying rind" to exist around older excavations. Seismic tomography confirms that a rind of lower velocity has developed along walls. In combining these tools, a monitoring program has been proposed to observe long-term changes in bedded salt. Results from the monitoring of electrical data over a 2-year time period illustrate the applicability of the technique in an underground environment.

"In oil fields that have been depleted with conventional surface oil wells but still contain significant reserves, an extraction alternative that has been constructed recently consists of a drilling gallery below the oil-bearing formation at the bottom of a 1,200-ft deep shaft where upward sloping wells are being drilled to allow oil collection by gravity. The gallery is 92-ft diameter with a flat ceiling supported by rock bolts and shotcrete structurally connected to the shaft liner, which doubles as a large tension support element. A special excavation sequence was implemented for the gallery to maximize arching in the stress above the large diameter gallery. The gallery was located in competent sandstone, constructed with sequential excavation methods, and designed with a 3D finite element model. Special consideration was given to optimizing the gallery location to take advantage of the geology for construction and support while giving good positioning to the well drilling equipment. BACKGROUND Brierley Associates was contracted to provide both design and construction management services for an approximately 1,165-ft deep, 18-ft excavated diameter vertical shaft that opens to a 92-ft diameter flat roof gallery. The geotechnical data for the site was based on information available from literature and from data obtained during core drilling and from in-situ testing in a 1250-ft deep borehole. Wire line coring was conducted using a HQ, 10-ft long core barrel with a mud-rotary drilling method through sedimentary bedrock. The geometry of the shaft and the bottom gallery is shown in Figure 1(a). GEOLOGIC SETTING AND STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY The stratigraphy at the site includes a series of interbedded marine limestone, shale, claystone, siltstone, sandstone, and chert units. Limestone and shale are the predominant lithologies in the upper approximately 675 ft, while the lower portion contains five distinct sandstone units and more abundant shale, claystone, siltstone, and coal than the upper zone. A cherty sandstone at a depth of 1,130 below ground surface (bgs) was encountered. At a depth of about 1,000 ft to 1,116 ft bgs, a non-marine sandstone unit was encountered. This sandstone is the hydrocarbon bearing layer. Joints and fractures observed in the limestone had dips ranging from 0 to 90 deg. from horizontal with joint and fracture surfaces that ranged from planar to irregular and smooth to rough. Several, near vertical shear planes with slickensides were observed with surfaces that were generally smooth and planar. RQD values for the limestone ranged from 0 to 100 percent but in general were good to excellent."

MORE ORE is mined in the Bingham District than in any other mining district in Utah. In addition to the open-pit operations of the Utah Copper Co., there have been, many large underground mines. Until recent years the principal production was from the Jordan and Commercial limestones, but in the last eight years valuable ore deposits have been developed in the so-called alphabetical or "A," "B," "C," and "D" limestones, mainly by the U. S. Smelting, Refining & Mining Co.
