Long before the dawn of recorded history, man began to dig into the earth's crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It has been well established that prehistoric man discovered flint. "The Flintstones" were aptly named. The flintknappers of southern England and Wales still exist today in ever dwindling numbers as they seek out chunks of flint. It is a well known fact that more than half of the earth's crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica containing materials have a great many uses in modern society. However, this material is potentially extremely hazardous to our health. Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. It is obvious to us that he was describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings, that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century, B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. It was certainly described by Agricola in his "De Re Metallica" published in 1556, in which he described lung disease among hard rock miners. This publication, I'm sure, is of special interest and perhaps known to many of you in the mining community. The original document was written in Latin and was translated in 1912 by two gentlemen, Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former president of the United States, who made his living before his presidency as a mining engineer.

"Hecla - Lucky Friday is an underground mine that has been in operation for 75 years and produces from depths over 2.3 kilometers (7,500 ft) below the surface. Technical issues at this depth include high rock temperature and seismicity. The use of new innovative mechanization is being examined for ore production. Principal advantages of mechanization are the reduced exposure of personnel, reduced seismic triggers, and increased efficiency. Lucky Friday has partnered with Atlas Copco to design, build, test, and deploy a mechanical miner for primary ore production. We will discuss the background, concept, development and deployment strategy for a mechanical miner. BACKGROUND The Coeur d’Alene mining district in northern Idaho was first discovered over 130 years ago and has been the most prolific silver producer in the US. The Lucky Friday mine of Hecla Mining Company (Figure 1) is the oldest (76 years) and deepest mine in the district, producing approximately 725 tonne per day (800 tons per day) from narrow, vertical lead-zinc-silver veins. Cut and fill stoping is currently employed at depths to about 2.3 km (7,500 ft) below ground surface, making it one of the three deepest mines in the western hemisphere. The #4 Shaft, a winze collared at approximately 1.8 km (5,900 ft) below surface and extending to a depth of nearly 2.9 km (9,600 ft), was recently completed to exploit the high-grade 30 Vein, whose resource has been identified to at least 3 km (9,700 ft) in depth.As with other deep mines worldwide, a number of challenging engineering issues occur, including: high in situ rock stress, squeezing ground, seismicity, high in situ rock temperature that requires refrigeration, diesel equipment that generates diesel particulate matter (DPM) requiring high ventilation airflow rates, and long travel times for worker transport to mining areas."

This paper describing the methods of recovery and treatment of a sand and gravel deposit and the preparation of these materials for a number of special markets is one of a series being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. It is of particular interest to those sand and gravel operators who have a surplus of fine sand which must be sent to waste, both from the point of view of, equipment and the variety. of markets supplied, and in that it describes one of the few sand and gravel plants which have resorted to hydraulic classification for sizing fine sand. IN the year 1933, workings at the No. 12 colliery, New Waterford, of the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, had advanced to a point where additional ventilation would soon be required. Furthermore, development of the mine was being .made to practically double the output of coal. Consequently, authorization was given to sink a shaft to the workings. The location selected is on the west side of the mine, about one and a half miles from the slope mouth and on the Low Point shore, some 250 feet from high-water mark. The cliff at this point is 40 feet high, with the land rising on a slope of about 5 per cent to the shaft. Figure 1 shows the location with reference to the colliery workings. The strata through which the shaft was to be sunk were pretty well known from diamond-drill borings previously made, and it was believed that water would be encountered to a depth of at least 250 feet to 300 feet. It was planned, therefore, to seal-off the water by the pumping of cement grout under high pressure. This method was considered to be the most economical means of handling the water during sinking, and would also result in a permanently dry shaft. Figure 2 shows a cross-section of the strata. The permanent shaft hoist and fan were to be electrically driven, which would necessitate the construction of a transmission line between the colliery and the shaft; therefore, it was arranged that the sinking equipment would have electric drive. As all equipment, materials used in construction, and supplies were to be hauled by truck, a roadway 1,800 feet long was required from the main highway to the site, and as heavy loads would be hauled during the fall, winter, and succeeding spring, this road was ballasted with 18 inches of clinkered material obtained from a burned culm bank one and a half miles distant. Actual field work was begun by the Company's own forces early in October. Work preparatory to sinking-in addition to the roadway and trans-mission line-included the construction of the reinforced-concrete shaft collar and fan drift connection; the permanent timber headframe (which was to be used also as the sinking headframe); the permanent reinforced-concrete building to house the shaft hoist and fan drive; and the erection of temporary buildings and installation of all equipment for sinking and lining the shaft and for cementation.

IN giving a sketch of the geology and mining of the tin-deposits of Cape Prince of Wales, a short description of the geographic and climatic conditions may be of special interest on account of this being a part of the world of which very little is known, even by the reading public. As shown in Fig. 1, the location of the Cape is lat. N. 65° 35' and long. W. 168°. It is bounded on the north by the Arctic ocean ; on the west by Bering strait and on the south by Bering sea. It is the western-most point of the mainland of North America, and to the west, across the strait, one can see East Cape, Siberia, which consists of a rugged, steep coast of granite cliffs. The climatic conditions are of interest because of the part they have had in the surface geology, and also because they affect mining from an economic standpoint. In connection with the climate and geography, it does not seem out of place here to quote a few lines from the prologue of The Wandering Jew, written by Eugene Sue, under the caption '1 The Land's End of Two Worlds."

The City of Chicago has a world-renowned skyline and is known for its provocative architecture. The subsurface conditions in the city have allowed for construction of these significant structures. The skyline is supported on caissons as they are called in Chicago or drilled shafts in other locations. Despite the significant strides the industry has made in advancing the drilled shaft, the use of other specialty geotechnical construction techniques like micropiles has not been overlooked in Chicago and the surrounding areas. Micropiles have been utilized to underpin famous existing historic structures like Orchestra Hall any many others. Engineers have used 200 to 600 kip micropiles to underpin compromised, inadequate, or damaged caissons. The paper will discuss the use of drilled shafts, micropiles, and ground improvement over the last 30 years in Chicago using a curated collection of case histories. It will also examine advancing the industry beyond its current technical limitations using these techniques. INTRODUCTION 20,000 years ago, glaciers from the Chicago region left behind sheets of glacial clay till underlain by dense, over consolidated glacial till below: limestone bedrock, found about 100 ft below street level. An unusual feature in this profile is the soft Chicago Blue Clay. Chicago has been called the birthplace of the Skyscraper and drilled shaft foundation, both of which came about in the 19th century. After the Great Fire of 1871, tall new structures were built rapidly and designing a successful foundation was trial and error. The first deep driven wood pile and caisson foundations bypassed the problem layer and found solid support on hardpan till or bedrock below (Schock and Risberg 2013). Once the drilled shaft foundation became acceptable to the Chicago engineering and construction community, building heights and complexity grew dramatically. As the city grew, building foundations were being repurposed. There was also the need to underpin structures for additional loads and shallow foundations for adjacent construction. Hand-dug drilled shafts were an option for some of these restricted access and low headroom sites but a new technique, micropiles, would prove to be the future of retrofit and hard to construct foundations. Micropiles were introduced on a limited basis to the United States market in the 1970s and 80s. In the early 1990s, the Chicago market began to latch onto micropiles and their use has grown significantly as a solution to the most complex foundation problems a maturing skyline has to offer.

The abstract highlights the importance of pillar stability in underground coal mines and the influence of rock mass strength and joint orientation on pillar behavior. The study employs numerical modeling using the distinct element code (UDEC) to investigate the impact of these factors on pillar stability. The research considers different joint orientations and varying rock mass strengths, analyzing parameters like stress distribution, displacement, and failure patterns. The findings reveal that both joint orientation and rock mass strength significantly affect pillar stability, with specific combinations leading to reduced safety factors and increased deformation. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of considering these factors in pillar design for safe and efficient mining operations.

Raiseboring is an attractive method of constructing shafts, being safe, fast and comparatively cheap. But this means back-reaming through weathered ground. However in the gravels and weathered near-surface rocks typical of the Western Australian goldfields, back reaming large diameter shafts through to the surface is risky and conventional sinking from surface has normally been required.An alternative construction approach has recently been used to stabilise the weak surficial materials and allow raiseboring through to the surface. The method is based on first installing rings of non-contiguous reinforced bored piles around the shaft perimeter, for temporary support, then back reaming shafts at full diameter through to the surface. Immediately after the reaming head is removed, the weak exposed materials are supported using remotely sprayed fibrecrete.The method has been successfully applied to four shafts since July 2007; 3 m and 4 m diameter shafts at Trident Mine, a 3 m diameter shaft at Wattle Dam and a 4.5 m diameter shaft at Athena Mine.Bored pile layout designs have varied from eight to 24 piles, of diameters 120 to 270 mm, in one or two rings. In one case, the top 10 m of the proposed shaft was pregrouted. Subsequent surveys have confirmed that fallout occurred in some shafts, out to the ring of piles, implying that the piles inhibited collapse.The practical implementation of the method was not always easy and many valuable lessons have been learnt. This paper documents key aspects of the method and the critical elements for its application.

Introduction ASARCO's Ray Operations include an open-pit copper mine in the Mineral Creek Mining District of Pinel County. The district is located in east central Arizona, 132 km (82 miles) southeast of Phoenix, AZ, and 126 km (78 miles) north of Tucson, AZ. The mine lies 8 km (5 miles) north of the Gila River in Mineral Creek Valley, between the Tortilla Mountains to the west and the Dripping Springs Range to the east. The rich copper deposits of the Mineral Creek mining district were first noted by a US Army Officer in 1847. The Ray Copper Company was the first major operation in the area. The company was named after the Ray mining claim, which was one of the earliest recorded claims. After decades of sporadic and unsuccessful mining ventures, the Ray Consolidated Mining Company was formed in 1910. The company introduced one of the first successful block caving operations in the world. In 1933, the Kennecott Copper Corporation acquired the Ray Consolidated Mining Company and continued operation of the mine under the same name until 1943, when the property was renamed the Ray Mines Division of Kennecott. Underground mining continued until 1955, when the mine was converted to an open pit operation. In November 1986, ASARCO Inc. purchased the Ray Mines Division and related facilities from Kennecott. The purchase also included the Hayden concentrator and the Ray Smelter, located approximately 32 km (20 miles) from the Ray Mine. This paper summarizes the 54,400 tpd (60,000 stpd) in-pit crusher and overland-conveying system and the 24,200 tpd (30.000 stpd) copper SAG concentrator and tailings disposal system constructed at ASARCO's Ray Complex - Ray Operations. General description of facilities The Ray concentrator includes a sulfide SAG concentrator, a "relocatable" in-pit primary-crushing plant and overland-conveyor system, a concentrator tailings-disposal system and plant ancillary facilities, The major elements of the project include: • A relocatable Fuller-Traylor in-pit 1524-mm (60-in) x 2261-mm (89-in) primary gyratory crusher at the 442 m (1450 ft) mine elevation. The crushing plant has a nominal capacity of 54,400 tpd (60,000 stpd) of sulfide ore. • A 1524-mm (60-in) wide x 1253-m (4110-ft) long overland belt conveyor, which runs from the in-pit crushing facility to a transfer station serving both the Ray Concentrator and the existing Hayden concentrator railroad load-out facility. • A 1524-mm (60-in) wide x 152-m (500-ft) long stackerbelt conveyor, which delivers a nominal 27,200 tpd (30,000 stpd) of ore from the transfer station to a 23,600 t (26,000 st) live-capacity coarse-ore stockpile serving the Ray Concentrator. • A nominal 27,200-tpd (30,000-stpd) concentrator, including semiautogenous grinding, flotation, copper concentrate filtration and associated plant ancillary facilities. • A tailings disposal system. Flotation tailings are pumped from the Ray Concentrator to a 122-m (400-ft) diam. thickener, located 4.8 km (3 miles) southeast of the Ray Concentrator site. The thickener overflow is pumped to two 76.2-m (250-ft.) diam. concrete process-water reservoirs. The thickener underflow, at 45% solids, is pumped to a new tailings disposal site located at Elder Gulch. • An HDPE-lined temporary-containment area to collect material from Ray Concentrator plant upsets and local storm-water run-off from a 100-year, 24-hour rain event. •A reclaim-water system from the Elder Gulch tailing pond area to the Ray Concentrator. • A 610-mm (24-in.) diam. x 31.9-km (19.2 mile) long fresh-water pipeline from the Hayden fresh-water-well field system to the Ray Concentrator. The overall process design criteria for the new Ray Concentrator is based on a nominal throughput of 27,200 tpd (30,000 stpd) of ore at 90% plant availability. However, based on the maximum performance capacity of the installed grinding equipment, it may be possible to achieve a sustained operating level in excess of 36,300 tpd (40,000 stpd) when processing soft ores. A coffer-dam was first built of cribs of round timber filled with stone, forming three sides, while the shore answered for the fourth. Considerable excavating was done with a steam-dredge, a hole being left for it to pass out. The opening was then built up, and the cribbing banked up with blue clay from the bottom of the lake, to render it water-tight and the dam pumped out; the remainder of the excavating being done by hand. All of the foundations, with the exception of the elevator-tower, and fifteen feet of the east side of hot blast, rest on the Potsdam sandstone, which forms the shore line, dipping into the lake at an angle of fifteen degrees. Continuous airflow monitoring can improve the safety of the underground work force by ensuring the uninterrupted and controlled distribution of mine ventilation to all working areas. Air velocity measurements vary significantly and can change rapidly depending on the exact measurement location and, in particular, due to the presence of obstructions in the air stream. Air velocity must be measured at locations away from obstructions to avoid the vortices and eddies that can produce inaccurate readings. Further, an uninterrupted measurement path cannot always be guaranteed when using continuous airflow monitors due to the presence of nearby equipment, personnel, roof falls and rib rolls. Effective use of these devices requires selection of a minimum distance from an obstacle, such that an air velocity measurement can be made but not affected by the presence of that obstacle. This paper investigates the impacts of an obstruction on the behavior of downstream airflow using a numerical CFD model calibrated with experimental test results from underground testing. Factors including entry size, obstruction size and the inlet or incident velocity are examined for their effects on the distributions of airflow around an obstruction. A relationship is developed between the minimum measurement distance and the hydraulic diameters of the entry and the obstruction. A final analysis considers the impacts of continuous monitor location on the accuracy of velocity measurements and on the application of minimum measurement distance guidelines.

The goal of the drill bit consumption study was to develop an equation(s) based on various components that affect drill bit wear and use that equation(s) to estimate the consumption of bits during production drilling. Drill bit data from various geographic locations were compiled and used to develop linear regression equations using the Microsoft Excel software package. Multiple drill bit consumption equations were developed and statistical analysis was used to verify the accuracy of those equations. The equations will allow mining companies to more accurately forecast drill bit consumption when evaluating new mine properties. This capability becomes increasingly beneficial to forecasting as the cost of consumables increases.

Drift mining, according to California mining terminology - and it is distinctly a California development - is the blocking out and extraction (breasting) of the auriferous gravels of an ancient buried stream either through tunnels, inclines, or shafts; it is one of the minor divisions of the larger classification known as placer mining. The contribution of each of these divisions and of lode mining to the gross production of gold in California totals as follows:3 [ ] The total amount of gold recovered from the placers of California from 1848, when Marshall discovered the precious metal in the mill race at Coloma, to 1928, was $1,226,515,404. The same period saw a total gold production from all operations of $1,823,562,360.

INTRODUCTION The headrace tunnel in Amlach is part of a hydro electric power scheme near the city of Lienz in south west Austria. The project is owned and developed by Tiroler Wasserkraftwerke AG, the regional electrical supply utility. The construction work was divided into seven contracts for the entire scheme. The power output will be 60 MW, this being developed from a head of 370 m and water flows of 20 m3/s. The water will be tapped from the river Drau and lead through a 22 km long headrace on the south side of the Puster valley through the Lienzer Dolomiten mountain range. Contract No. 4, which is a joint venture between Mayreder, Züblin, Strabag, Rella and Innerebner, involves the construction of 13.5 km of the headrace. It was decided to bore this from one single adit, which probably makes it the longest pressure tunnel driven from one side by a TBM. (See Fig. 1.) For the tunnelling an Atlas Copco Jarva MK 12 TBM was chosen. The excavation diameter is 3.90 m, with the final lined diameter being in the range of 3.20 to 3.40 m. The back-up is a 145 m long single track rail system supplied by Mühlhäuser (Germany). Side-tipping cars with a capacity each of 8.2 m were used for removing the muck. One California switch was attached to the back-up after 3,000 m, and a second fixed switch was installed after 8,000 m of boring. 3 m long

An extensive programme of ground instrumentation and observation was carried out for the West Duff in Outfall Sewer tunnel project prior to and during construction, to establish the performance characteristics of the rock through which the tunnel and appurtenant openings were dug and to examine the nature of the lining-to-ground interaction. The existence of high horizontal residual ground stresses was confirmed, and values established by overcoring. Rock deformations and stress changes were monitored during tunnelling. Permanent stress and strain monitoring devices were set into the final lining and these are continuing to operate. INTRODUCTION The site is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario at Pickering, some 20 miles (32 kilometres) east of Toronto, Canada where a variable thickness of glacial or interglacial sediments overlies bituminous shale bedrock of. the Collingwood Formation which is lower Ordovician age. Approximately 50 feet (15 metres) of glacial cover exists at the shaft, though this thins abruptly at the regressing cliffed shoreline such that several small areas of exposed bedrock exist in the lakebed. The general location, overall geological section and detailed site plan and profile are illustrated in Figs.1,2 and 3 respectively. General properties of the rock as established during an extensive test drilling and site investigation programme are listed in Table 1, while stress determination by USER overcoring stress meter device are given in Table ll. These data formed the basis of analyses which were done to examine the intended outfall design, and to detail the construction procedure and the observational instrumentation programme.

The haulage system used to convey ore from an underground mine to a surface stockpile at the mine process plant is a vital component of the mine’s overall infrastructure and economic viability. The system selected has a significant impact on the set-up of the mine and the access to the underground mine. In turn, the set-up of the mine and the access to the underground mine have a significant impact on the system.A number of haulage technologies are available to transfer the ore from the underground workings to the surface stockpile, including hoists, conveyors, rail and trucks.This paper focuses on the shaft hoisting and inclined conveyor haulage technologies. These technologies have been used consistently to deliver ore from at depth and/or at high tonnage. Previous reviews of the appropriate vertical haulage systems have nominally been restricted to the respective systems only, with no consideration for any other scope or issues that may affect the selection. The selection of the appropriate vertical haulage system, whether shaft hoisting or inclined conveying, needs to consider numerous key factors.CITATION:Krek, R M and Northcote, A E A, 2014. This paper, which describes the mining methods and practices at the Jarbidge mines of the Elkoro Mines Co., is one of a series of papers being issued by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in various districts throughout the United States. LOCATION AND HISTORY The Elkoro Mines Co.'s property is located at Jarbidge in the northeast corner of the State of Nevada (fig. 1). The camp is 9 miles south of the Idaho line; the nearest railroad point is 70 miles to the northeast at Rogerson, Idaho. A road leading to the south and connecting with Deeth, Nev., is passable during the summer months; the heavy snowfall which generally takes place early in the winter usually closes the road until the first of July.

The New Lead Belt of Missouri, situated in the heart of the Clark National Forest, stands as a dynamic example of how mining activities can successfully coexist in a restricted wilderness area. After 16 years of intensive drilling activity, mine development and surface plant construction, many would agree that the mine-plant design philosophy of St. Joe has minimized the imbalancing effects to the ecology and the wilderness appearance of the Ozark area. In a recent dedication speech of St. Joe's newest operation, it was stated: 1 "this Brushy Creek Mine, as well as nearly all of the mines in this district, lies within the boundaries of the Clark National Forest. Here the Forest Service has an outstanding and realistic program for multi-use of Federal lands. Mining, lumbering, recreation and conservation coexist in, what I consider, a delightful wilderness environment. I believe that this same type of usage could be permitted on all government land without seriously detracting from its natural beauty." Each and every activity in the process of discovery, exploration, development and finally operating a mine and process mill could have drastically degraded some phase of nature's environment were it not for the well developed and executed plans of the mining people involved. This is not to say that everything has been kept in perfect balance; but most certainly the industrial impact on what was once a wilderness area has been held to a minimum. What follows is the story of how each phase of this gigantic development was handed by industry people. Through their interaction and cooperation with government agencies, educators and researchers, allowed not only the ecology of the area to be protected, but the aesthetic beauty of the Ozarks to remain intact.

Choosing a mining method for an underground ore body is a complicated and often iterative process. Advances in technology give the design team an overwhelming array of possibilities for methods and equipment. Hecla's recent discovery of the deep Gold Hunter ore body has given the staff at the Lucky Friday Mine the exciting challenge of determining the optimum mining method. Taking an ore body from prospect to production requires traditional resource characterization, including drilling, delineating and modeling. Developing the mining plan is an evolving process, changing with each new piece of information as the project progresses through exploration and development.
