The Kiirunavaara apatite-magnetite orebody is about 4 km long and approximately 100 m thick sheet-like body, which lies roughly in a north-south direction and dips from the horizontal plane along its entire length, in towards the town of Kiruna. The origin of this orebody has been a matter of controversy, with both magmatic and hydrothermal origins proposed. Traditionally and for practical purposes this rich apatite-magnetite ore has been divided into two main types: low phosphorous ore (B-ore) and high phosphorous ore (D-ore). Further the low phosphorous ore is divided into the low alkali (B1) and the high alkali (B2) ore.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) has recently developed a series of models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study gas distribution around a continuous mining machine (CM) with various fan-powered flooded bed scrubber discharge configurations in an exhaust curtain working face. CFD models utilizing species transport model without reactions in FLUENT were constructed to evaluate the redirection of scrubber discharge toward the mining face rather than behind the return curtain. The study illustrates the gas distribution in the slab (second) cut. The following scenarios are considered in this study: 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face on the off-curtain side of the continuous miner; 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face, but divided equally to both sides of the machine; and 15% of the discharge redirected toward the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, with 85% directed into the return. These models were compared to a model with a conventional scrubber discharge where air is directed away from the face into the return. The models were validated based on experimental data and accurately predicted sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas levels at four gas monitoring locations. One additional prediction model was simulated to consider a different scrubber discharge angle for the 100% redirected, equally divided case. This paper describes the validation of the models based on experimental data and the gas distribution results of the CFD models. INTRODUCTION To control methane gas and dust concentrations on continuous mining operations, it is important to provide sufficient quantity of fresh air from the end of tubing or curtain to the active face. In this region, operating machine-mounted water sprays and fan-powered, flooded bed scrubbers can significantly increase the amount of airflow reaching the face [1-3]. However, when an entry is large, especially in higher coal seams, the water spray configuration and the scrubber capacity may not be adequate to maintain sufficient forward airflow to confine the dust cloud to the face. Dust can roll back toward the machine operator as a result [4]. Currently, several coal mines having negligible gas emissions in higher coal seams (2.4 to 3.0 m [8 to 10ft.] thick) with exhaust tubing systems redirect the scrubber discharge back towards the face in an effort to improve dust collection. NIOSH studied the redirected scrubber exhaust techniques for dust and gas control in a full scale CM gallery to assess its potential for industry-wide application [5]. For a CM face, previous studies have concluded that the behavior of gas and respirable dust is a complex process. The distribution/dispersion and transport of gas and respirable dust after they are liberated at the face are governed mainly by their mass properties, the movement pattern of the ventilation air, and interactions with the mining machine and water droplets created by the external water spray systems used for dust control [6-10]. To understand these behaviors in a complex CM environment and to evaluate the effectiveness of various control techniques, numerical modeling has become a necessary supplement to laboratory experiments and field studies."

This paper will outline the problems and solutions of the new generation washeries, as well as the recent technological advances which are being considered for future coal preparation plants. The subjects to be covered will include: - reasons for considering coal preparation plants; - raw coal crushing and handling systems; - types of coal cleaning equipment being used versus new equipment being considered; - fine coal circuit sizing; - clean coal centrifuging and dewatering; - thermal dryer problems and changes; - fine refuse dewatering systems; - clean coal storage problems and changes; - materials handling within the plants; and - control systems for preparation plants. The design and integration of the various circuits that form a modern coal preparation plant have led to the creation of an exciting new field of industrial research. As the need for energy sources increases, efficient methods of preparing coals for specific markets will become more important.

Advances in technology now allow geotechnical practitioners to better describe the properties and variability of a rock mass through advances in surface and underground mapping, borehole technology and geophysical imaging. Yet the way in which practitioners use this data is not being realised to its full potential and the quality and quantity of data that is collected is often superior to the conventional design approaches that are typically adopted. A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach provides the ideal basis for using this data to generate geologically-realistic rock mass models based on parameters derived from field data, which more effectively capture the variability and rock mass behaviour. However, until recently, the DFN approach has mainly been applied to cave mining and small-scale models associated with synthetic rock mass modelling or groundwater flow modelling for the nuclear waste and oil and gas industries.Ground support design for blocky rock masses in Australia is often dealt with in a rather traditional manner, adopting either an observational empirical approach through rock mass classification systems or conventional wedge stability analysis techniques. Using these methods requires several generalised assumptions about the rock mass fabric and excavation geometry. As such, the support system is often designed for a worst-case scenario based on a predetermined risk tolerance that the mine is willing to accept and a design block size that is generally determined by the proposed excavation dimension.A study by Doumis (2014) used conventional wedge stability analysis and the probabilistic key block analysis software JBlock (Esterhuizen, 1996) to estimate potential block sizes and support requirements. A DFN approach has also been adopted at Callie underground mine using FracMan™ software (Golder Associates, 2014). Completion of the Hall Street Coal Transfer Terminal in St. Louis marks the beginning of a major shift in the movement of coal to the power generating stations of the Midwest and South Central regions of the United States. The location of the terminal is significant. The 10 million ton- per-year facility is the first high capacity rail-to-barge transfer terminal to be built on the western shore of the Mississippi. This terminal and others to follow will link the massive coal fields of the West with the high coal consuming markets adjacent to the 25,000-mile Inland Waterway System.

A mining machine has been designed and fabricated to mine coal from room and pillar operations combining high pressure waterjet cutting and mechanical fragmentation. Waterjets are used to slot the coal face with an advancing plow wedge then breaking out larger coal pieces. The machine has the following advantages: - simply built around a disassembled longwall chock and gathering arm loader apron; - few moving parts which are simply and inexpensively maintained; provides immediate roof support in the face working area; - coal produced is larger, with resulting lower preparation cost; - no dust is generated; - risk of spark generation is virtually eliminated.

Gypsum and gypsite, used in the manufacture of plaster and plaster products, have been mined from deposits near Acme, Hardeman County, Tex., for more than 30 years. The Certain-toed Products Corp., 120 East Lancaster St., Ardmore, Pa., operates the Acme, Tex., mine. Underground hauling was done with storage-battery and Diesel-electric-powered shuttle cars. Many mining companies and individuals have manifested interest in all types of equipment powered by Diesel or Diesel-electric units, as attested by the recent increase in use of Diesel-powered equipment in underground metal and nonmetal mines. The purpose of this paper is to describe the manner in which a storage battery-powered Joy Model 60D2 shuttle car was converted to Diesel-electric power. The conversion was made, at the instance of the operating company, by Stewart & Stevens on Services, 4801 Lemon Ave., Dallas, Tex. This is believed to be the only such converted shuttle car in use.

To extend or delimit the known ore reserves of the Black Wonder manganese de-posit, the Bureau of Mines undertook an exploration project consisting of trenching, underground excavation, long-hole drilling, and sampling. The mineralization is spread over 6 square miles containing numerous small individual manganese deposits. There has been only small production from some of these deposits; however, simultaneous operations from many such small deposits could contribute considerably to the production from the district. A custom mill to treat oxide ore for battery use was built near Patterson in 1942 by the General Dry Batteries Co., Inc. It operated during World War II and was removed in 1944 when the manganese mines ceased operation. Except for some small experimental shipments, there has been no activity in the district since that time.

Research conducted over the past 20 years in France, Great Britain, and the United States on the use of the large-hole burn cut has established cer¬tain advantages for this system. Advantages include longer pull and more complete fragmentation from blast rounds. However, research is needed to establish a set of parameters for optimum performance. As part of the Bureau of Mines Advancing Mining Technology for Marginal Resources program, the Twin Cities Mining Research Center, Twin Cities, Minn., acquired a horizontal rotary drill capable of boring holes up to 24 in. in diameter. This was used for a series of underground experiments at White Pine mine, White Pine, Mich., during 1973. Exceptional results were obtained with a 12-1/4-in void hole that yielded up to 18 ft of pull in a 10- by 20-ft drift, Fragmentation was excellent, and the compactness of the muck pile facilitated loading.

"An airborne dust cloud is an ensemble of particles of varied size, density, shape and states of aggregation. An understanding and quantifying of the dispersion and deposition of the du.st generated in mines is essential to the development of measures for reducing worker exposure to dust.In coal mining, the major portion of the dust is generated during the cutting of coal using a shearer or a continuous miner. The major phenomenon affecting ambient concentration is the deposition of dust. Panicle deposition may take place due to the effect of gravitational, inertial, electrostatic, and thermal forces, and mechanisms such as Brownian and eddy diffusion and inenial impaction. The three major mechanisms of deposition in turbulent flow in mines are diffusion (Brownian and eddy), sedimentation and inertial impaction. The mechanisms determining panicle deposition are size dependent.From a review of the literature, there appears to be a knowledge gap in the understanding of the deposition phenomena in mine airways. In order to obtain a better understanding of the deposition of dust for various particle sizes, and to develop a set of data for evaluating predictive mathematical models/or dust flow in mines, a series of dust-flow experiments was performed under controlled conditions in mine airways. It appears that the deposition data generally follow the theoretical behavior of dust based on the combined effect of diffusional and gravitational deposition. Jn this paper, the findings of the study on the deposition of dust in mine airways and its dependence on size, velocity and concentration are discussed. A set of deposition equations that could be used to determine the approximate deposition at various points in a mine airway are presented.IntroductionThe major factor affecting ambient dust concentration in mine airways is the deposition of dust. While the literature in aerosol sciences contain several references on deposition, most studies were done in small diameter tubes for diffusional deposition (Liu and Agarwal, 1974). The deposition data from small diameter, short tube experiments may not be applicable to studying deposition in mine airways that have large areas and extend several hundred meters. Further, the change in concentration along the length of a mine airway may significantly affect the deposition an aspect that may not be easily determined in short tubes in laboratory experiments."

Xstrata Copper is extending the Ernest Henry Mine with a 6 Mtpa sub-level cave (SLC) mine being constructed under the pit. The SLC mine will maintain the EHM operation until 2024 after the pit is completed in August 2011. In February 2008, the first cut of the new underground mine at EHM was fired with the start of an exploration decline. Since then Xstrata Copper has continued the development and construction of a SLC mine. During this process a number of challenges arose, some of which had not been anticipated in the planning stages, that in turn has been addressed to ensure the development continued. The challenges have been many and varied and range from setting up the portal area and commencing the exploration decline development in an active large open pit, to management of underground water. Further challenges were presented by the effects of the GFC on investment recommendations, with the scale of the mine varying from a shaft mine to a smaller scale trucking only mine in mid-2009 and back to the full shaft mine in late 2009. The effect was the parallel development of two separate mining scenarios, with the challenge of maintaining commonality for as long as possible to keep both options alive until the final board approval was obtained. In 2010 the RSPT caused further impacts. This paper will describe the current progress of mine development as well as how the various challenges have been met and some key lessons learnt from these experiences.

This paper reviews the design of jet grouting at re-entrant corners of excavations where the diaphragm wall and secant pile wall installation were interrupted by existing utilities in the streel sidewalk. Jet grout blocks were formed to seal the gaps in the walls for excavation support, consisting of four to six columns in clusters. Jet grouting was performed around an electrical duct bank which had to be maintained. Jet grouting was executed through stratified soils using various combinations of jetting parameters for different soil strata. The installation sequence and age of the neighboring columns within a cluster will affect the jet’s ability to form subsequent columns. When jet cutting is limited next to hardened grout columns or embedded obstructions (such as diaphragm walls or secant pile walls in this case), the specific gravity (SG) of spoils would be reduced and tend toward the value of the injected grout SG. The magnitude of spoil SG is also influenced by the variability of the grout mix supplied. Specific Gravity Ratio (SGR) defined as the ratio of spoil SG to the actual grout SG at the time of jetting can be used as an indicator of successful treatment, with SGR > 1.0 indicating effective soil erosion. Verification coring and testing were implemented to confirm target column diameter and strength of grouted soils have been achieved.

CFD models using Species Transport Model without reactions in FLUENT were constructed to evaluate the redirection of scrubber discharge toward the mining face rather than behind the return curtain. The following scenarios are considered in this study: 100 percent of the discharge redirected back toward the face on the off-curtain side of the continuous miner; 100 percent of the discharge redirected back toward the face, but divided equally to both sides of the machine; and 15 percent of the discharge redirected toward the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, with 85 percent directed into the return. These models were compared against a model with a conventional scrubber discharge, where air is directed away from the face into the return. The CFD models were calibrated and validated based on experimental data and accurately predicted sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas levels at four gas monitoring locations. One additional prediction model was simulated to consider a different scrubber discharge angle for the 100 percent redirected, equally divided case. These models identified relatively high gassy areas around the continuous miner, which may not warrant their use in coal mines with medium to high methane liberation rates. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models, and the validation of the models based on experimental data.

MARTA, The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, is building a 53 mile heavy rail transit system to serve the City of Atlanta. Phase A of the Rail System, consisting of approximately 14 miles of at-grade, aerial and subway construction is underway. Metropolitan Atlanta lies in the Piedmont Geologic province of Georgia and is underlain by rocks of essentially granitic and gneissic nature. The soils encountered are primarily silty sands which are in-place weathering products of the parent rock and exhibit their relic structure. In general, these materials have presented no unique construction problems other than those created-by proximity of manmade structures, local availability of ground water, and top of rock elevation. The subway sections of primary interest in this paper consist of hardrock and soft ground tunnels and extensive cut-and-cover sections. The cut-and-cover construction includes excavations as deep as 80 feet. Temporary support systems in these deep excavations consist of soldier pile-timber-lagging or soldier pile-tremie concrete (SPTC) walls with internal bracing or tiebacks. In shallow cut-and-cover sections, where right-of-way economics permitted, slopes were laid back partially or fully to reduce or eliminate the need for bracing systems. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng (Min. Eng.) degree A study was conducted to investigated and compare the feasibility of two single level extraction layouts for an intact part of theorebody of the De Beers diamond mine, Koffiefontein. Two layouts were chosen and the tonnage profile, development schedule and production ring blast layouts were calculated by applying the information acquired through a literature study. Current principles used on the mine were also applied. The first layout chosen is described as a simple straightforward layout with 6 production tunnels spaced 15 m apart, and is referred to as Layout A. The second layout, named Layout B, is described as a complex chevron layout with 9 production tunnels spaced 15 m apart. This layout has a rim tunnel situated in the kimberlite ground, which is called a chevron and this made the layout more complex than Layout A. By comparing the financial results of the two layouts, it was found that Layout B is a more feasible option than Layout A. Sensitivity analyses show that both layouts are extremely sensitive to the revenue of the projects. Therefore it is recommended that Layout B can prove to be a source of additional tonnage to add to the total tonnage profile of the mine and to extend the life of mine by 20 months, only if certain financial/economic factors improve. There is, however, still some areas of the project that need to be investigated.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines report is to provide mining industry personnel and regulatory authorities with a subsidence-reference list and annotated bibliography that will aid them in locating subsidence information and in developing their own subsidence information sources. Over 700 references are listed in the Bureau's subsidence information center bibliography; approximately 600 of these references were obtained for assessment. Of these 600 references, 167 were selected to be rated, categorized, and annotated. All literature referenced in this report was published prior to 1984. Table 1 is a cross - referenced index that classifies and rates selected references with respect to specific keywords. References are rated not on quality of content but rather on applicability to given subject areas. Appendix A is an annotated bibliography of the references listed in table 1 and provides further information of each article to aid the user in selecting articles for specific areas of subsidence technology. Appendix B is a copy of the subsidence information center bibliography.

INTRODUCTION The city of Alexandria, Egypt is located on the Mediterranean Sea at the northwestern edge of the Nile River delta. The city is approximately 26 km long and 3 km wide bounded by the sea to the north and Lake Maryut to the south. The Alexandria Project is split into 2 phases: phase one included designs to update two existing primary wastewater treatment plants, five pump stations and over 75 km of sewer pipe, 18 km o f which is tunneled, (1500mm to 2750mm ID pipe). Currently the pipeline and pump stations are under construction. Phase two of the project includes expanding both the capacity of the treatment plants and the limits of the collection system. Included in this system expansion is the 3.5 km long, 2250mm ID Central Zone Conveyance, which is the subject of this paper. The project is under the direction of The Alexandria General Organization for Sanitary Drainage (AGOSD). It is an USAID funded joint venture of two American firms, CH2M - Hill and Metcalf & Eddy who share equally the major portion of the work and two Egyptian firms, Engineering Consultants Group (ECG) and Wairth Associates who are also partners. The venture, which is both design and construction management, worked under the name Wastewater Consultants Group, WWCG. Michael Gilbert was Chief o f the Geotechnical Department and Project Engineer for the Central Zone Conveyance. Gennaro Avolio was Geotechnical Exploration Manager for the Alexandria Wastewater Project.
