During the driving of the main haulage level at the Copper Mountain mines of the Canada Copper Corpn., Ltd., near Princeton, B. C., some very rapid driving was done, though no claim for a world's record is made. Conditions, however, were unfavorable for economical operations. The cost of power was high, for the fuel was of poor grade; besides, during the time the work was in progress, very little other power was needed so that most of the power cost was charged against the footage. The transmission line consisted of No. 4 galvanized iron wire with the result that the line lass was considerable. The voltage transmitted was about 30,000. The plant was operated under a lease, which was due to expire about the same time this work was supposed to be completed; an extension was refused, therefore speed was most important. The plans called for a straight adit 2900 ft. (884 m.) in length. At a point 2800 ft. (853 m.) from the portal, two raises were to be put up to the next nearest workings, a difference in elevation of about 800 ft. (243 m.). One of these was to be a two-compartment hoistway and the other a zigzag ore pass, or muck run. A location for these raises had been determined by a number of diamond-drill holes, but the material to be penetrated by the adit was not known. Construction and mining sites are often subject to unexpected flooding and extensive delays may occur in locating and installing emergency pumps. This particularly applies to sites located in remote areas. A simple and effective pump, called an air-lift pump, can be built from the equipment available at the working site. The basic req- uirements are a compressed air supply, air hose and conventional water pipes. The air-lift pump is comparatively in- efficient but approximately 35 per cent of the available compressed air power at the site can be applied to pumping. Suprisingly high liquid discharge rates may be obtained in suitable applications. The theoretical and practical consider- ations of the air-lift pump are evaluated and a suggested procedure for the emergency design and construction is outlined. INTRODUCTION. The Queensland Government, via the special purpose company vehicle û City North Infrastructure Pty Ltd û is currently developing BrisbaneÆs Airport Link underground toll road and Northern Busway (Windsor to Kedron).Airport Link is a predominantly underground toll road planned between BrisbaneÆs northern suburbs, the airport and the Brisbane Central Business District (CBD) frame. The Northern Busway forms part of BrisbaneÆs expanding busway network, sections of which will be jointly delivered with Airport Link. Airport Link will connect the North-South Bypass Tunnel, Inner City Bypass and local road network at Bowen Hills to the northern arterials of Gympie Road and Stafford Road at Kedron and Sandgate Road and the East-West Arterial in the cityÆs north-east. The Northern Busway is a two-lane, two-way bus-only roadway proposed to connect the existing Inner Northern Busway at Herston with Windsor, Lutwyche, Kedron, Chermside, Aspley and Bracken Ridge. Airport Link and Northern Busway (Windsor to Kedron) is one of the largest infrastructure projects planned in the first phase of the State GovernmentÆs South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan and Program. The paper will provide an overview of the projects, including a discussion on the technical and environmental aspects as well as the procurement of the Airport Link as a public private partnership.

An autonomous spray application system for a structural Thin Spray-on Liner (TSL) is targeting productivity and safety on underground coal continuous miners by potentially replacing steel mesh, and has broader applications as surface support and confinement in metalliferous mines and civil tunnelling. Polymer chemistry, coating formulation, geotechnical assessment and the autonomous application system are being developed as an integrated package as part of a continuous miner automation project. This polymer-based TSL system has significant benefits over conventional steel mesh skin confinement, including being more automatable by spray application, providing complete skin confinement and active skin reinforcement as a fast-curing composite with substrate, and having effective fire retardant properties for the polymer and the underlying coal. This paper presents a preliminary assessment of distance sensing systems that would enable autonomous adaptation of a nominal spray path to spray a consistent thickness of TSL (nominally 5mm) over an irregular topography. Two alternate sensors are assessed; firstly, a 2D LIDAR mounted on a linear axis is used to produce a 3D surface profile for generating an adapted spray path; and secondly, a robot end-effector-mounted ultrasonic sensor is assessed for wall following techniques to dynamically adapt a nominal spray path.

Though Germany has a very old mining history, her experience in uranium mining only started in the late sixties. Today in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) there are only 5 small mines in the exploration stage, namely Menzenschwand and Müllenbach in the Black Forest and Mähring, Popenreuth and GroBschloppen in northern Bavaria. In all these exploration mines much development is required to define shape and size of ore bodies. Mining engineers, government authorities and environmentalists alike are very much concerned about environmental safeguards and protection of mine workers against radon and its daughter products. Miners are affected by internal and external radioactive exposure. In general the external [f3]- and [µ] -exposures can be considered as small in comparison to the internal exposure and are therefore not discussed in this paper. The internal exposure is caused by the inhalation of radon and its daughter products and is relevant to the lung as the critical organ. The nobelgas radon is inert and does not from compounds with other elements easily. Contrary to the physical half-life of 3,8 days the biological half-life of radon is only 10 to 20 minutes. During the rentention time in the body only approximately 1 % of the long-lived decay products are retained in the system (SCHOGER, 1976). In this connection is it important that the radon resorption as well as the radon secretion varies individually and depends to a large extent on the age of the person (SCHOGER, 1960). RENOUX et al. (1978) have determined that the greatest part of the a(-activity in the air is attached to aerosoles with a diameter of 0,4/14. The radiation exposure of the lung by radon is negligible if compared with the exposure by short-lived decay products. For this reason one has introduced the concept of the potential [o](-energy (P) of the short-lived radon decay products, which means the total [ct]-energy, which is produced when an atom decays in the decay-series down to the long-lived lead-210. [ ] The unity of the potential [o]-energy concentration in the SI-system is 1 j/m3 air. In radiation protection however a specific unit is used namely the working level (WL): [ ] The WL-unit, though internationally recognised has not been introduced officially in Germany. Because of the large amount of tunneling still to be done in the FRG, the various mines departments responsible for safety and health in mining ask searching questions such as: - What are the laws governing radon emanation in tunneling? - Can workers be adeguately protected against radiation hazards? - How should one drive through high grade uranium ore? - What happens if the ventilation system breaks down?

Introduction Pegasus Gold's Montana Tunnels mine is a large surface gold, silver, lead, and zinc mine located 37 km (23 miles) south of Helena in southwestern Montana. Milling operations commenced in late March 1987. The concentrator achieved full production in May that year after undergo¬ing several modifications and improvements. Production for 1988 is projected to be 2.48 t ,80,000 oz) of gold, 34.2 t (1.1 million oz) of silver, along with 8.5 kt (9400 st) of lead, and 22.6 kt (25,000 st) of zinc from lead and zinc concentrates. Mill throughput currently averages 11.7 kt/d (12,900 stpd), compared to the origi¬nally designed capacity of 11.3 kt/d (12,500 stpd). Cash production costs, net of bypro¬duct revenues for the third quarter 1988, were below $3.20/g ($100 per oz). The introduction of ore to the concen¬trator marked the culmination of 12 years ex¬ploration, evaluation, and development. Initial milling operations encountered diffi¬culties with the circuit as designed. As a result, several modifications and improve¬ments were made to the plant. This article is intended to assist other companies developing projects of this type and complexity. It discusses the mine's de¬velopment from feasibility and construction through start-up. The operation, as it exists today, is reviewed including the modifica¬tions and improvements made since start-up. History The mine is situated in Jefferson County, MT within the historic Corbin-Wickes min¬ing district. Underground mining began in 1864 and flourished until the early 1900s. Between 1864 and 1900 the vein deposits in the district produced about $41 million dol¬lars worth of lead and silver ores containing subordinate amounts of zinc, copper, and gold. At various times, three smelters were operated in the area.

The Mariposa estate, a grant made by the Mexican Government to Juan 13. Alvarado, during the time when California was still under the dominion of Mexico, was purchased in 1847 by J. C. Fremont, and the United States patent issued to him in 1856. By sale, or its equivalent, money advanced, the property came into the hands of the Mariposa Company, June 25th, 1863, and through a varied existence of work and temporary inactivity, has as yet been kept as an undivided property, and rests at present with the Mariposa Land and Mining Company of California. I pass over this period of 15 years without giving the history of the ups and downs of the estate, partly because it is familiar to many, and also because I think in such a case this paper would assume too much the character of a narrative. The estate is situated in Mariposa County, California, about 170 miles southeast of San Francisco. It begins in lat. 37' 26' 38'' north, and long. 119' 55' west, and runs 6 miles north; thence 69 miles west; thence 5 miles northwesterly towards the Merced River; thence 84 miles southerly; thence 3 miles easterly; thence 1 mile southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 2 miles southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 1 mile southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 1 mile northerly, and thence 2 miles easterly to the place of the beginning; embracing 44,387 acres (70 sq. miles) more or less. To describe this vast estate in detail as to its full geology, its numerous quartz veins, its many facilities to exploit them and work them by cheap methods, would lead me further than I intend to go at present, and I will content myself to describe the latest workings of the company and its immediate field of operations. As long ago as 1860 the late Dr. Adelberg advised the running of an adit from the northwestern edge of the estate at Benton Mills 011 the Mereed River. His object was to undercut the deepest workings of the then paying mines on the estate—the Pine Tree and Josephine. Following this advice, the tunnel known as "River Tunnel " was commenced. "Construction of underground structures in urban areas is a very challenging work. There are generally two methods of construction, an open cut-and-cover and underground method. To eliminate the subsurface and surface disturbance and street traffic problems, underground method is preferred. The stress redistribution caused by underground excavation induces movements and deformation in the earth mass and ultimately at the ground surface. This is more pronounced in large space excavations. Generally pre-supporting system is used to control ground deformation and thus enhance its stability. In this paper an innovative pre-supporting system is presented. Concrete Arch Pre-supporting System (CAPS) is introduced in Tehran Metro in 2002. This method has roots in construction method of an Old Iranian small water tunnels, called Quanat. CAPS is an efficient method for stabilizing large span underground spaces constructed in shallow and soft ground. In this technique underground reinforced concrete elements are constructed around the proposed underground space prior to main excavation. This method is used successfully in over 50 large span underground structures in Tehran Metro stations and road tunnel intersections. CAPS has potential to be used to pre-support the large span underground spaces at any weak ground condition in an urban area.1. INTRODUCTION Underground subway stations can be constructed either by open cut-and-cover or underground construction. Due to the presence of subsurface utilities and street traffics in urban areas, underground construction is preferred to eliminate relocation of the subsurface utilities, and other urban disturbance. Underground construction in an urban area is a very challenging effort. The complexity of the work is more pronounced in a weak and shallow ground. The stress redistribution caused by underground excavation induces deformations in the earth mass and ultimately at the ground surface causing damage to adjacent structures. The need to control ground surface settlements in urban area is widely recognized and new construction methods are continuously developed. Settlements induced by underground excavation may cause serious damages to nearby structures and subsurface underground utilities, (Sekimoto et. al. 2001). In order to improve stability of underground excavation and reduce settlements, various ground treatment techniques are presented, Johnson, et.al., (1983), Carrieri, et.al. (2002), and Ocak (2008)."

In the design of structures founded in the near-surface rock, a distinction may be made between those problems that are related to the strength of the rock mass, and those that are related primarily to the compressibility of the rock mass. The mining engineer deals almost exclusively with problems involving strength in the design of open-pit slopes and underground openings. The civil engineer is similarly concerned with strength problems in the design of vehicular and water tunnels; underground power plants; cut slopes in rock for highways, canals, and spillways; and in the study of the sliding resistance of the foundations of gravity dams and the abutments of arch dams. Moreover, the civil engineer encounters problems in which the compressibility of the rock becomes the key element in the design. These problems include settlement of heavy structures supported on rock, deformation of the abutments of arch dams, and deflection of pressure tunnel linings. The design problems listed above are still solved largely on the basis of experience and rule-of-thumb. However, recent developments in rock mechanics give promise of providing more realistic approaches to certain aspects of the design. This paper, presents some of the more important recent developments which contribute to an understanding of rock behavior and which aid in design of rock structures. Typically, four steps are involved in the design of a structure, whether it be a machine element, a structural member of a building, or a structure in rock. These steps are listed below:

The Climax Molybdenum Company' s newest operation is the Henderson project, which is located on the east side of the Continental Divide. Ore reserves are estimated at more than 300 million tons at a grade of 0.49% MoS2. For mining the ore a modified panel caving system is used. The ore is transported to the Henderson mill on the west side of the Continental Divide on a 42 in. (1.07 m) gauge railroad through 9.6 miles (15.4 km) of tunnel and 4. 8 miles (7.7 km) of surface track, a total distance of 14.4 miles (23. 2 km). Each train consists of 30 ore cars with capacity of 22 st (20 mt) of ore or 660 st (599 mt) per train. The unmanned trains operate completely automatically. At the 54 in. by 84 in. primary gyratory crusher, the bottom dump ore cars pass over a dump scroll to discharge at a maximum rate of 100 st (91 mt) per minute. Dumped ore falls onto a rock box before passing over a 17 ft long by 46 ft wide (5. 2 m by 14 m) grizzly set at a 40° angle with bar spacings of 7 ½ and 8 ½ in. (191 mm and 216 mm) openings. An estimated 30 to 50% of the ore (which at times is wet and sticky) passes through the grizzly. The operators report that a shallower angle on the grizzly, perhaps 35º to 37º, would have been sufficient and would have prevented impact on the back of the crusher pocket by large boulders. This pocket as well as the crushed ore pocket under the crusher is lined with AR plate. The accompanying drawings show a "future splitter" and the operators are planning the installation of this unit to prevent impact and subsequent damage to the crusher spider. Crushed ore at an 8 to 9 in. (203 mm to 229 mm) size joins the grizzly undersize in the pocket beneath the crusher. This pocket is sized at 660 live st (599 mt) so that it will accept an entire trainload of ore. Crushed ore is removed from the pocket by a four-speed, 84 in. (2. 1 m) apron feeder operating at 9.6 to 29. 3 fpm (2.9 to 8.9 mpm). A 60 in. (1.5 m) takeaway conveyor operating at 480 fpm (146 mpm) delivers the crushed ore to a 58,000 st live and 193,000 st total (52,600 and 175, 100 mt) open stockpile under an A -frame supported tripper gallery. Impact idlers on the takeaway conveyor under the apron feeder discharge are mounted on wood blocks for a cushioning effect and ripped belt detecting bars are located behind each impact idler. The conveyor tunnel is of corrugated and galvanized steel construction rather than concrete. The concrete crusher enclosure is circular in design from its lowest level at elevation minus 110 ft 4 in. INTRODUCTION A team effort by the Owner, Engineer, and Contractor can help avoid serious problems on a construction project. It can save cost and time for both Owner and Contractor, as illustrated in the following case history of the West Zone and Siouf Keblia Collector System in Alexandria, Egypt (Contract 02-AID-83/84). Under the bilateral agreement made in 1980 between the United States of America and the Arab Republic of Egypt, the United States, through the Agency of International Development (USAID), gives approximately $1 billion per year as a grant to Egypt for various development projects. The Alexandria Wastewater Management System was selected in 1981 as one such project. The Egyptian Government Agency responsible for this work is the Alexandria General Organization for Sanitary Drainage (AGOSD). A joint venture of two U.S. consulting engineering firms, CH2M HILL, Inc., and Metcalf & Eddy, Inc., called Wastewater Consultants Group, along with two local subconsultants, Engineering Consulting Group and Warith Engineering Co., were selected by AGOSD to study the sewer system and develop a plan to serve the immediate and long-range sewage disposal needs of Alexandria. Wastewater Consultants Group is currently involved in Phase I of the Master Plan. This initial step in providing Alexandria with an operating sewerage system for the current and near-term population (year 2000) consists of the design and construction management of 140 kilometers of collector and force main pipelines (including 9 miles of pipe jacking and tunneling in very soft clay), five new pumping stations, extensive rehabilitation of two treatment plants (built in the 1960s but never operated successfully), and installation of a sludge handling system. CONSIDERATION for future expansion influenced the design of the new smelter at Chuquicamata. The section of the smelter now going into operation, while large, represents only little more than half of the ultimate plant. Equipment for the direct smelting of raw concentrates has been arranged in the conventional manner although needless details have been eliminated wherever possible while mechanical and electrical features not usually found in copper smelters have been incorporated. Access is afforded to all equipment but platforms and walkways have been held to a minimum. The poling and other platforms in the converter aisle, normally subjected to battering by ladles and other heavy equipment in transit, are of concrete construction with steel grid armor embedded in the exposed surfaces. Noticeably absent are the many platforms formerly required for the handling of converter flux since this material is charged to the converters through the side walls of the converter uptake hoods. Clear space with ample headroom is provided under each converter and converter puncher's platform to permit clean-up by small bulldozers. Remote controls have been introduced at many points. Electrical control rooms and control centers have been conveniently located. An electrical tunnel with cross tunnels and escapeways is situated under the entire length of the converter aisle for power feed lines. Skull breaking facilities are in a separate building near the smelter. A silica-slurry building with brick storage area is adjacent to the smelter building so that elevator service is available to both buildings. A smelter office, a change house and lunchroom are provided in convenient locations. Units of the smelter as presently constructed are shown in the plan and table on page 1194. The ultimate smelter will house 7 reverberatory furnaces, 14 waste-heat boilers, 9 Peirce Smith converters, 4 casting furnaces serving 2 casting wheels, and one holding furnace serving a straightline casting machine. Additional crane requirements in the converter aisle will necessitate the installation of special hoisting equipment in space already provided in a raised section of the roof over the casting end of the aisle. Thus a complete crane may be lifted high enough above the crane rails to permit the passing of another crane underneath thereby giving all cranes full use of repair facilities already installed. For the collection of gases, 2 dust chambers, each with separate stacks, will collect converter gases and 2 balloon flues with separate stacks will collect reverberatory furnace gases. Extensions necessary to complete the ultimate plant will be possible with little interruption to normal operations since the future converters and reverberatory furnaces will be added at the east end while additional casting facilities will be added at the west end of the present plant. The future units may be added singly or all at one time depending on requirements.

I speak to you today on the subject assigned to me, "Subsidence - a Real or Imaginary Problem", as a representative of Consolidation Coal Company (a wholly owned subsidiary of Continental Oil Company). The information I relate to you is our experience in the Pittsburgh Coal Company Division of Consol and covers the Pennsylvania properties and mines with particular emphasis on the mines in the south- western portion of the State or in the immediate vicinity of Pittsburgh, Pa. Mining of Freeport and Pittsburgh seams of coal in the Pittsburgh vicinity dates back over one hundred years. Consol, or its predecessor, Pittsburgh Coal Company, has been actively engaged in mining in the area since Pittsburgh Coal Company was organized in 1900. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania came into prominence as the Steel City largely because of the vast reserves of high grade metallurgical coal readily available in the immediate vicinity and also because of its favorable river transportation. Early in the 1900's we operated over 100 small coal mines, with operations located in the Counties of Allegheny, Fayette, Washington, Westmoreland. We have also operated mines in Somerset and Greene Counties. Titles in Pennsylvania can be in three estates: (1) title in fee, (2) title to the mineral, (3) mining rights permitting the removal and extraction of the mineral with or without waiver of surface damage. Consol has over the years acquired good legal title to the coal lands purchased from individual farm owners, with good broad mining rights, and in 98% or more of its title has a complete waiver of surface damage or the right to subside the surface land. In the early days of our Company, individual coal farms were purchased from land owners. Many of these titles severed the coal estate from the in fee title and good mining rights with waiver of surface were conveyed in the original severance deed. Thus, minable coal reserves were put together by the purchase of the coal under many individual farms in an area. In the early years, the mines practiced hand dug mining - later going to mechanical cutting with hand loading of the coal. Systems used were entry driving with room and rib panels. We have practiced full recovery mining as far as practical during the years of hand loading, as well as in the later years when the mines were mechanized. Mining system layouts, methods and procedures have changed from time to time to keep pace with improved mining machinery and new inovations, such as roof bolting and rubber tired haulage.

The problems presented by old mine workings affect both present day mining and land development. An automated method of locating these old mines from the surface using electrical resistivity techniques was de-veloped earlier under a Bureau of Mines contract. Subsequent Bureau research has refined the techniques and expanded the area of study to a variety of geologic provinces. During this research, six mining areas in the United States were in-vestigated with the Bureau's automated resistivity method. This report describes the mining areas involved and the results of the resistivity investigations, which showed a high rate of success in detecting old mines. It also describes the field measurement techniques and data analysis procedures.

The Monterey Coal Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Carter Oil Company of Houston, Texas, recently awarded a contract to build the Monterey No. 1 Preparation Plant, which will be located near Carlinville, Illinois, to the McNally Pittsburg Manufacturing Corporation. The preparation plant will be one of the most modern jig preparation plants in the State of Illinois. Illinois No. 6 coal will be delivered by a 48" slope belt having 35-degree carrying idlers, operating at 650 FPM and operating on an incline of nearly 17 degrees. The slope belt is driven by two 450 BP motors and will deliver the mined coal at the rate of 1800 TPH to a stationary step-type ' screen having six-inch openings. The overproduct from the stationary screen will discharge into a 10' x 24' McNally Rotary Breaker and the underproduct will bypass the rotary breaker. The rotary breaker is equipped with heavy manganese screens with 6 ½" diameter openings. The sized 6" x 0 coal from the stationary step screen and the rotary breaker will be discharged by gravity to a 4%" raw coal incline storage belt. The 48" raw coal storage belt will deliver the 6" x 0 sized coal at the rate of 1800 T?H to an 8000 ton concrete raw coal silo, 70 feet in diameter and 1x7 feet high. The 6" x 0 sized coal will be drawn from the concrete storage silo by seven (7) 36" wide reciprocating plate feeders. Five feeders are to have constant speed drives at a rated capacity of 145 TPH each. Two (2) feeders will have remote con- trolled variable speed drives, to provide a varying feed.

"Instrumented rock bolts are effective tools for assessing the reinforcement and condition of immediate roofs; however, instrumentation can have relatively high costs, which can be justified by high reliability and repeatable and representative data measurements. The instrument’s durability and operational life are of great importance, along with accuracy, applicability, and usefulness. This paper develops reliability models for three instrumentation technologies used in slotted rebar, drawing data from studies at five underground coal mines. Three case studies demonstrate instrument applicability and usefulness. Finally, two types of instrumented rock bolts are used to determine the direction of bend and maximum bending strain. RÉSUMÉ Les boulons d’ancrage instrumentés sont des outils performants qui permettent d’évaluer la consolidation et la condition des toits immédiats. L’instrumentation peut cependant se révéler très onéreuse, des coûts qui se justifient par sa fiabilité élevée ainsi que par des mesures de données reproductibles et représentatives. La durabilité de l’instrument et sa durée de vie opérationnelle sont très importantes, de même que son exactitude, son applicabilité et son utilité. En s’appuyant sur des données issues d’études menées dans cinq mines de charbon souterraines, cet article développe des modèles de fiabilité pour trois technologies d’instrumentation utilisées pour des barres d’armature nervurées. Trois études de cas démontrent l’applicabilité de l’instrument et son utilité. Enfin, deux types de boulons d’ancrage instrumentés sont utilisés pour déterminer la direction de la flexion et la contrainte de flexion maximale.INTRODUCTION Using instrumented rock bolts to monitor strain changes in a rock bolt array allows engineers to understand the per-formance and effectiveness of the rock reinforcement system and the response of the rock mass to such support; however, instrumentation remains a niche solution for solving complex ground-control problems—particularly for underground coal mines, which is where they are needed most. From 2000 to 2016, fall-of-ground fatalities still accounted for an average of approximately 30% of the total annual underground coal mine fatalities in the United States alone (United States Department of Labor, 2018). These tools would also be useful for deep hard-rock mining conditions. The main reasons for the lack of widespread use are not only cost but also accuracy, applicability, implementation procedures, intrinsic permissibility, and reliability (Peng, 2015). As a result, measurements of coal mine roof behaviour using instrumented rock bolts are quite scarce, not widely published, or inadequately presented to provide a seamless understanding of a roof’s response to support."

Fine-sized mineral wastes discarded by ore milling plants require stabilization to prevent air and water pollution. Stabilization has been attained by physical, chemical, vegetative, and combination procedures. Vegetative reclamation is preferred to physical and chemical stabilization but is diffi¬cult to achieve because the wastes are sterile, contain deleterious inorganic salts, and lack the essential nutrients and physical characteristics required for sustaining vegetative growth. Methods now have been developed for attain¬ing vegetative growth on all but excessively acidic, basic, or saline tailings at costs ranging from $120 to $650 per acre. The cost for stabilizing tail¬ings requiring more intensive treatment techniques may range upward to $1,750 per acre. This report summarizes procedures developed by the Bureau of Mines and industry for vegetating amenable tailings, lists costs for the various processes, and suggests procedures that may be applicable for stabilizing saline and pyrite-containing tailings. Ridged planting beds, drip irrigation, and deep-furrow planting techniques are suggested for stabilizing saline wastes. A combination of mill tailings and sewage sludge can be used for pro¬ducing synthetic soils, and layers of sewage sludge buried under a layer of tailings offer promise of inhibiting acid formation from oxidation of sulfides in mineral wastes.

Since 1950, rotary-drilled, large-diameter holes, "big holes", with depths to over 300 feet and diameters of over 30 inches have become numerous and widespread. Fifty such holes have been drilled for access shafts to LPG mined caverns, Over 70 holes have been drilled for various other commercial activities. Over 150 holes have been drilled by the AEC for atomic testing purposes. These holes have ranged up to 300-inch diameters with 1600-foot depths, 120-inch diameters with 570-foot depths, and 72-inch diameters with 4800-foot depths. Equipment is now available to drill a wide range of ?big holes? for varied requirements. At least a dozen drilling contractors are participating or have participated in the drilling of "big holes". The accompanying tables show pertinent historical, technical and economic data on over 250 holes. The illustrations to be presented concurrently with this paper show the various equipment and accessories now in use. (See Appendix I for captions of illustrations.)
