"The stability of underground structures made (especially) in jointed rock mass is of the utmost important to designers, engineers and operators. Rock bolting is generally being practised to reinforce excavation walls and roofs by minimizing the movement of rock joints. This study proposes a new analytical model for the prediction of displacements, axial load and shear stress of a fully grouted rock bolt intersected by single or multiple rock joint(s). The governing equations for rock bolt are derived based on the assumption that shear force generated by slippage along the bolt-grout interface has a linear relationship with respect to the relative displacement at the interface. The proposed model is novel compared to the existing literature in the sense that it accounts for rock kinematics as an enriched sum of a continuous part (elastic) and a discontunous (jump) part due to the presence of joint planes. The complete solution of the bolt displacement, axial load and shear stress is derived as a function of the rock displacements, and, it comprises of Heaviside and/or Dirac delta functions in the solution space due to the jump at the intersection point(s) of bolt(s) and joint(s).Our novel solution is able to predict the elastic behavior of a grouted bolt, subjected to opening of the joint planes in pull-out test and also in excavated tunnel. These two cases also serve as benchmarks for grouted rock bolts with multiple joints and can be used for validation of numerical and experimental models. Further, the solution is applied to analyze the behaviour of grouted rock bolt as well as cable bolt installed in circular tunnel, with variations in rock joint(s) opening displacement, shear stiffness in the boltgrout interface and locations of the joint planes. Results indicate that for a specified grout stiffness, the maximum axial load developed in the bolt for discontinuous distribution of rock mass displacement is significantly higher than that of the continuous distribution of rock displacement. This paper provides an analytical interpretation of bolt beaviour considering multiple joint planes with variable joint opening displacements. The results obtained via the analytical method are in line with the corresponding investigation done by other authors. Thus, our analytical treatment can be used to understand bolt behaviour in realistic situations."

Constructed between 1885 and 1891, the New Croton Aqueduct (NCA) in New York State is a 50 km long (31 mi) brick-lined tunnel conveying water from the Croton watershed north of New York City to distribution systems in the Bronx and Manhattan. Except at two siphons, the aqueduct operates as an open channel conduit from the New Croton Reservoir downstream 39 km (25 mi) to the Jerome Park Reservoir in the Bronx. The remaining 11 km (6 mi) is operated as a pressurised conduit and includes a major siphon, of circular cross-section, under the Harlem River. The aqueduct has a flow capacity of approximately 1100 million litres of water per day (13 m3/s or 290 million gallons per day) and supplies on average ten per cent of New York CityÆs drinking water. The CityÆs water supply system is operated and maintained by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP). This paper covers the work done during the three main stages of the program to rehabilitate the entire NCA: inspections, design and rehabilitation. It also includes some of the more interesting structural findings of the original construction as well as documents and drawings from the NYCDEP archives. The rehabilitation program has been underway in phases since 1993, with inspections scheduled to minimise outages, allowing this strategic aqueduct to remain in service during critical seasonal periods. The open channel flow section of the aqueduct in the north is horseshoe shaped, with inside dimensions of 4.1 m (13.6 ft) in width and 4 m (13.5 ft) in height. The pressurised section is 3.7 m (12.3 ft) in diameter, and includes a 90 m (330 ft) deep siphon under the Harlem River. A total of 163 million bricks were used in the construction, enough to build a 48 km (30 mi) wall around Manhattan Island, 3 m (10 ft) thick and 15 m (50 ft) high.Between 1993 and 1997 a series of in-tunnel investigations were performed in the open channel portion of the NCA, consisting of field inspection, non-destructive geophysical testing, and coring of the brick liner. Between November 2004 and September 2005, a major inspection program was conducted to assess the condition of the 11 km (6 mi) long pressurised section and all shafts, headhouses and blow-off structures along the entire 50 km (31 mi) alignment. Inspection methods included using an underwater remote operated vehicle (ROV) equipped with sonar and cameras to inspect the deep siphon, fibre optics examinations of probe holes drilled through and beyond the brick lining, and core holes and geophysical inspections to assess properties of the liner and behind-the-liner materials. A water pressure and test grouting program was conducted to assess methods and expected grout takes for the rehabilitation work in the pressurised sections. The rehabilitation program is anticipated to be completed in 2010.

The dry deep mixing method for stabilization of soft soil has been used in the Scandinavian countries for 25 years. The typical application has been stabilization of soft inorganic clay. Today the method is used more frequently in organic soil with good results. The Limix System, introduced in the USA by Hercules Grundläggning AB and TREVIICOS Corporation, is a cost-effective dry deep mixing method used to stabilize most types of soft soil. This paper presents the general principles of stabilizing organic soil with the dry mix method and two case histories of soil stabilization projects in organic soil. Between October 2000 and June 2001 the Limix System was used in England to stabilize soft organic alluvium at the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, Contract 440. During year 2000 the Limix System was used in soft organic soil in Holland near the Groene Hart Tunnel entrance to support trench excavations for slurry walls and concrete barrettes.

The paper describes a technique by which large concrete boxes are unobtrusively inserted beneath existing highway and railway infrastructure to form new subways, culverts and under-bridges, thus avoiding the inconvenience and costs of disruption to traffic associated with traditional cut and cover techniques. A series of project examples, undertaken in the United Kingdom and United States, are used to illustrate the design and construction of the box structures, together with the technology required to control ground disturbance in the tunnel face and around the box, and the jacking systems necessary for box installation.

The Nonel Primadet is a non-electric blasting initiation device. The system incorporates the safety advantages of a cap and fuse system with the precision blasting afforded by electrical blasting caps. Each unit is made up of a delay blasting cap factory-crimped to a Nonel® shock tube lead line. The delay elements in the blasting caps are manufactured in both millisecond and long period series. There are 16 periods available in both series - period 0 through period 15. The units are manufactured in 12', 16', and 20' lead lengths. The hollow shock tube is made of surlyn plastic and it is coated on the inside with a reactive material. The powder train has a density of only 1/10 grain per linear foot of tube. A typical blast round is timed precisely the same way it would be with electrical caps. After the round has been timed and loaded, the tube leads are gathered in convenient bunches and tied into a detonating cord trunkline. The Nonel® tube bunches are initiated by the output of an 18 grain per foot detonating cord trunkline. Once initiated, the Nonel® shock tube will reliably propagate at 1800 meters per second. The energy from this shock front initiates the delay elements in each delay cap. The shock tube is inert to electrical energies, including; stray current from AC/DC power sources, as well as, electrostatic discharges. The tube is also inert to initiation by impact. The system has proven to be particularly advantageous in both tunnel and shaft blasting applications. The major advantages in using the Nonel® system in this type of work are: 1) faster and easier tie-in techniques through the use of bunch-blasting. 2) electrical power can be left on during loading and tying-in. a. electrical lights can be turned on at the working face - better lighting facilitates loading and tying-in. b. electrical pumps can continue to function throughout loading and priming procedures (this is particularly advantageous in shaft work with water problems). 3) down-time due to approaching electrical storms is minimized. 4) increased overall efficiency in the blasting cycle: a. it is easier to train a man in the proper use of the system. b. fewer missed holes per round. c. less time required for tie-in. 5) safety-advantage--The system is not susceptible to involuntary initiation from extraneous electrical energies.

Introduction Operation is underway at the Dutch Creek No. 1 mine of the first US longwall panel to be mined under the cooperative agreement between the US Bu¬reau of Mines and Mid-Continent Resources. The 244-m (800-ft) wide longwall face is part of a multilift longwall demonstration. A 3-m (10-ft) top slice is being extracted from the 8.5-m (28-ft) coal seam. This occurs in an area of the property where the Coal Basin A and Coal Basin B beds have come together to form one seam. This face, longest ever operated in the US, is being worked on an advancing longwall system. During the first months of its operation, this longwall face has been very productive and safe. Mid-Continent Resources operates two coal mines in the Coal Basin, located in the White River National Forest near Carbondale, CO. The Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. originally opened this property in 1895, and conducted a small mining operation for 10 years on the north rim of the basin and then abruptly shut down. Mid-Continent began operations in 1956, after the Coal Basin fields had lain idle for about 60 years. Operations commenced at the outcrop of the Coal Basin B bed situated at the 3-km (10,000-ft) elevation. At this time, coal was produced from Coal Basin A and Coal Basin B seams in the area. Since 1981, operations have been centralized at two mines, the Dutch Creek No. 1 and the Dutch Creek No. 2, both located in the center of the basin. Since 1981, Mid-Continent has shifted its emphasis to longwall mining as the primary method of production, and each of these mines is equipped with state-of-the-art longwalls using shields as the method of roof support. A 4-km (13,000-ft) long twin-bore rock tunnel is being driven at a lower elevation of 2.4 km (8,000 ft) to intersect the coal seams at depth, as they dip 12° in a westerly direction. This tunnel will enable the company to reduce costs by replacing trucks with conveyor belt haulage (Fig. 1). Mid-Continent began longwall operations in May 1976 with the US's first modern, mechanized advancing longwall face, using chocks. In August 1978, a second advancing longwall face was started. Results from two faces showed that the mining system could be used effectively to manage the difficult conditions encountered in both the Dutch Creek No. 1 and the L. S. Wood No. 3 mines. Unfortunately, low productivity and high costs plagued the company's advancing faces. The problems resulted principally from major equipment failures, poorly designed chocks and face conveyors, and the lack of an efficient, cost effective system for building packwalls. Flushing of rock between chocks and roof control were also major problems. In Sept. 1979, Mid-Continent and the US Bureau of Mines entered into a cooperative agreement to demonstrate the feasibility of mining thick coal seams using the multilift longwall mining method. Two lifts are to be used to mine the 8.5-m (28-ft) thick coal seam in Dutch Creek No. 1 mine. The Bureau provided mining equipment for 180 m (600 ft) of longwall face. This included the shields, face conveyor and drive units, shearing machines, panel belt, and stageloader. As a result of previous experience in advancing longwall mining, Mid-Continent purchased an additional 60 m (200 ft) of face, including roof supports and an additional face conveyor. "Modular Mining's computerized LHD position monitoring and dispatching system commenced operation at the De Beers Finsch Mine in mid- J99J. A sophisticated blend of proven and new technologies links the dispatcher at the workstation console on the surface with the LHD operators several hundred metres below. The dispatcher allocates each LHD to a priority tip and loading drive based on instructions provided by the miners and shift bosses underground. LHD operators receive tip and loading drive allocations on the vehicle computer console which communicates data via a Leaky Feeder radio network. The operators interact with the console to notify the dispatcher of delays, breakdowns, and changes in tip and tunnel status. The underground terminal displays allow shift bosses to monitor the progress of the LHDs as they pass infrared beacons (IRs) located in the tips loading drives and rim tunnel main haulage ways. The terminals also provide on-line statistics for the current and previous shifts. Future enhancements include optimized dispatching and interfacing to a PLC system controlling ventilation. Further, token ring-based loop UHF radios are being investigated as an alternative to the Leaky Feeder data radio network. IntroductionFinsch first contacted Modular about an LHD monitoring and dispatching system in late 1988. At that time, Modular declined a request for a formal quotation but agreed to perform an engineering feasibility study. The study was issued in mid-1989 and confirmed Finsch's belief that an underground system could be developed with technology available at that time. A contract for the system was signed the following year and, in May of 1991, the system began operation. By the end of 1991, LHDs on both production levels of the mine were under the control of the system."

From its mining lease at the northern end of Cohens Reef at Walhalla in the North Gipps- land mountains, the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mining Company produced 13,695kg of gold, which at 1982 prices represents a value of about $140 million. In the period 1885 to 1908 the mine was one of Australia's principal reef gold producers, being top Victorian producer in six of these twenty-four years. Prior and subse- quent occupants of the lease produced an addit- ional 160kg of gold. The Extended and the other mines on Cohens Reef whilst contributing importantly to the financial resource of Victoria, were the sole important support for the substantial town of Walhalla that had grown up around them. When the mines closed, Walhalla gradually reduced from a bustling developed town to the present attractive mountain village so favoured by tourists.

Current extensions of the European railway network require long TBM drives in the diameter range of 10 m under critical and varying rock conditions. In view of that and in particular for a 7 km long high-speed railway tunnel in Spain to be started in mid-2003 a new design for a hard rock Double Shield TBM has been developed by SELI (Italy) and Jäger (Austria) in collaboration with Mitsubishi (Japan)and Robbins (USA). Due to the new design and operational features that new type of TBM has been named Universal Double Shield TBM with a further extended area of application. Special attention has been given to outstanding torque and thrust capacities combined with the shortest possible length of an innovative shield arrangement, different advance modes in various ground conditions and further developed exploration and treatment facilities.

"Clay formations in their natural state exhibit very favorable confining conditions for repository of radioactive waste because they generally have a very low hydraulic conductivity, small molecular diffusion and significant retention capacity for radionuclides. Nevertheless, one concern regarding the hydromechanical behavior around drifts in such claystone is the associated pore pressure field disturbance during excavation works. In the short term, the very low permeability leads to an almost “undrained” condition, meaning that the stress change due to face advance will create volumetric strains leading to an increase or decrease of pore pressure. If the effective stresses reach the failure level, the induced damage around these excavations might change the favorable properties of such formations. To demonstrate the feasibility of a reversible deep geological disposal of high-level and intermediate-level long-lived radioactive waste (HLW, IL-LLW) in the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone (COX) formation, the French national radioactive waste management agency (Andra) started in 2000 to build the Meuse Haute-Marne underground research laboratory (M/HM URL). The present paper illustrates observed pore pressure changes during excavation of drifts (˜5 m diameter), of micro tunnels (˜0.7 m diameter) and a borehole (˜0.15 m diameter). All these openings are parallel to the major horizontal stress at the main level of the M/HM URL. In drifts parallel to the major stress (i.e., when the initial stress field in the drift section is quasi-isotropic) an important increase followed by a drop of pore pressure is observed in the horizontal plane at the drift wall. These observations emphasize the impact of the in situ stress state and rate of excavation on the pore pressure and provide important insight of the hydro mechanical behavior of the COX claystone and the relationship between pore pressure and excavation induced fractures zone."

"This circular is part III of a series of papers reviewing the literature on air conditioning in mines, with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of miners.4/ It deals with theoretical and practical methods of conditioning air in mines to correct or alleviate the health hazards described in parts I and II and discusses the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various-parts of the world.The principal conditions to be corrected or alleviated are the chemical qualities of mine air (especially when contaminated with toxic and noxious gases and dusts) and the physical qualities (abnormal mine temperatures and humidities) that emanate from various sources in underground workings. Air motion and barometric pressure are physical qualities also to be considered.From the standpoint of health, knowledge of the composition of the air, or atmosphere, in mines and other underground operations is of prime importance. Suitable control measures or plans of procedure to combat or eliminate the hazards from contaminants must be based upon accurate information obtained by the selection and use of proper methods of sampling and analyzing mine atmospheres (1).5/Conditioning air is one of the most essential factors to be considered in any underground workings, not only from the standpoint of health and safety but also with regard to efficiency and productivity. Without modern air-conditioning, the war's great demand upon the copper mines could hardly have been met, as the mechanical refrigeration cooled off sweltering holes in less than a month, whereas in the past it was standard practice to blow air through the tunnels for 3 years or so until they were cooled.This paper discusses methods of determining the chemical and physical qualities of mine air and their control. Introduction Fracture mechanics is the study of the behavior of cracks and their modes of propagation. During cracking, energy is consumed in creating new surface area. The more energy a material absorbs, the higher is its fracture resistance. This fracture energy is provided either by work done externally, by the release of elastic strain energy within the cracked body, or by a combination of these two effects. Fracture resistance is measured in terms of either the stress intensity factor, K, or the energy release rate (also referred to as crack driving force), G. For linearly elastic materials, these two quantities are related by the following equation: [ ] where [u] is Poisson's ratio and E is the modulus of elasticity. Both K and G are direct functions of the applied force and the crack length. The process of rock cutting with full-face tunnel boring machines (TBMs) involves the indentation of a rock surface by rolling disc tools. Excavation occurs as fractures, extending from the locus of chip indentation, propagate between concentric disc grooves and liberate rock chips from the intact rock face. Since disc cutting is achieved by a fracture process, it is logical to anticipate that differences in cuttability of a variety of rocks should be related to the variation of fracture material properties among the rocks. Such a relation has been demonstrated between the performance of full-face TBMs and the critical crack driving force for excavation in relatively high strength, brittle, low porosity, isotropic rock (Nelson et al., 1985). The objective of this paper is to report on the results of a continued investigation of the relationship between fracture material properties and the effectiveness of disc cutting. Additional reliable data on full-face TBM performance is difficult to obtain, so that the results of disc linear cutter tests performed by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) (U.K.) are utilized in this study. Fracture Material Property Evaluation If a crack tip is subjected to a perfectly plain strain condition, many materials will behave in a brittle manner, and the material resistance to fracture is constant during crack growth. This resistance is referred to as the plain strain fracture toughness, believed to be a material property. The standard testing procedure for this parameter is given in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) test designation E399. To ensure plain strain conditions, acceptable specimen geometries are specified. Unless these geometric specifications are adhered to, the measured fracture resistance is regarded as the apparent fracture toughness, and a subscript Q is used, as [ ]. The methodology adopted by ASTM E399 is within the framework of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM). This approach assumes that material resistance against cracking is developed instantaneously, without initial stable or subcritical crack extension. Prior to crack advancement in rock, however, much of the crack driving energy is absorbed in a localized volume in front of the crack tip, referred to as the plasticity or microcracking zone. This capability for energy absorption substantially increases material resistance, and a crack may be arrested unless an increased crack driving force is applied. The LEFM or plain strain assumptions would underestimate the actual fracture resistance of such a material. Such a conservative approximation may be desirable in the design of structures against fatigue or brittle failure. In mining or tunneling, however, an underestimation of crack resistance can lead to the selection of underrated excavation equipment and a decrease in production efficiency. The development of fracture resistance in rock is best described by the material resistance curve, or R-curve, which is a plot of fracture resistance as a function of crack extension. Typically, peak resistance is only reached after a finite amount of subcritical crack growth. The

The first neutrinos in nature ever detected by man were "caught" in a unique laboratory some 3 km (over 2 miles) underground in one of the world's deepest mine shafts at East Rand Proprietary Mines (ERPM), Boksburg. Only 100 m from where gold is being mined from the rock face a small team of South African and American physicists work on one of the most fascinating and important fundamental research projects that is currently exciting the imagination of the scientific world. Neutrinos are sub-atomic particles just as are protons, neutrons and electrons, but they are unique in that they have neither electric charge nor mass. Cosmic neutrinos travel at the speed of light and penetrate stars and planets. Even a million kilometres of solid lead would not provide a satisfactory shield against them. Stars are believed to "burn" by means of nuclear reactions which produce enormous fluxes of neutrinos. The sun, for example, illuminates the earth with visible light, but also bathes it with neutrinos. After World War II, two American physicists, Profs Frederick Reines and Clyde Cowan, experimenting at a large nuclear reactor, succeeded in obtaining direct evidence of the existence of the laboratory-produced neutrino. It then became very important to establish whether neutrinos also existed in nature. This knowledge would lead to a greater understanding of the forces of nuclear physics, of the behaviour of nuclear particles and, indeed, is also relevant to astrophysics. From the start it was clear that the search for "natural" neutrinos would be difficult. Questions which arose were- * how could they be traced if they were without mass or electric charge? * how could other nuclear particles be screened off? * could these not be wrongly detected, or even prevent accurate detection of neutrinos? Neutrinos were known to be produced along with charged particles, by the reaction of primary cosmic rays with the constituents of the atmosphere. It was also known that when the neutrinos collided with matter, they themselves produced the same type of charged particle which could be detected if the unwanted charged particles from the atmosphere could be screened off. What was needed, therefore, was a laboratory where the particles produced in the atmosphere could be screened out, yet which would receive and detect the particles produced by the neutrons' collision with the matter (solid rock) in the vicinity of the laboratory. This meant that scientists either had to build a laboratory with an enormously thick lead shield for their detection work. . . or they could go as near as possible to the centre of the earth where only charged nuclear particles of the very highest energies could penetrate. ERPM was clearly the most suitable place in the world where so effective a "neutrino trap" could be set. Under more than 3 000 m of solid rock the apparatus for detecting neutrinos is well shielded against unwanted nuclear particles produced in the cosmic radiation which can reach the laboratory only in a steeply vertical trajectory. Other particles are easily stopped by the great thickness of rock. The air-conditioned laboratory is at one end of a 150 m long tunnel, 2,5 m high and wide, blasted from the rock. The electronic recording equipment is housed here, while the rest of the tunnel is filled with the detection system. When a charged particle passes through a detector element, it produces a minute flash of light which is recorded and which triggers a flash-tube array. This then defines the trajectory of the charged particle, which is also recorded on film for analysis. So far 82 neutrinos have been detected, 50 at the present level and 32 at a higher level, and the findings have borne out the physicists' theoretical expectations. In this joint project Profs Reines, J. P. F. Sellschop, Director of the Witwatersrand University's Nuclear Research Unit and M. F. Crouch of the Case-Western Reserve University of Ohio are the Chief Investigators. This unique endeavour has been made possible by financial support from the US Atomic Energy Commission, the University of the Witwatersrand and the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, as well as by the cooperation of the management and men of ERPM.

Active placer mining in Alaska began near Juneau in 1880, but the first gold rush did not start until 1896; then the discovery of the Klondike brought gold seekers from all parts of the world. A few of the newcomers were experienced miners, but the majority knew nothing whatever of placer mining. Even those who were placer miners of much experience found entirely new conditions, notably frozen ground, that presented many difficult problems. As a result, numerous methods of mining and of thawing frozen ground were tried. From these trials the practice described in this bulletin has been developed. All known placer fields in Alaska have been mined to some extent, and some have been virtually exhausted. In most districts, however, there remain large quantities of low-grade gravel and also some small isolated areas of comparatively rich gravels which could not be successfully mined because of adverse physical conditions. These districts are now the scene of most placer mining, including dredging, hydraulicking, drifting, mechanical methods of open-cut mining, and ground sluicing (or booming) followed by " shoveling-in."

THE Cornucopia gold quartz veins form a parallel vein system traversing meta-morphic and granodioritic rocks. Field and petrographic evidence suggests that metasomatism has played an important role both in the emplacement of the grano-diorite and in the formation of the veins. Structurally the veins appear to be related to the major tectonic features of the Wallowa Mountains and to be narrow shear zones rather than filled fissures. Petrographic studies indicate a complex history of formation starting from initial alteration along fractures or joints followed by recurrent fracturing and a quartz-forming stage,-and closing with continued shearing and microbrecciation, which permitted the upward percolation of the later ore-forming solutions. The precipitation of ore minerals from these solutions formed ore shoots. Postmineral effects include the injection of Tertiary basaltic dikes, a slight amount of cross faulting, and some movement along the planes of the veins as well as oxidation. INTRODUCTION Cornucopia is in the southeastern part of the rugged Wallowa Moun-tains of northeastern Oregon. It was founded over 50 years ago following the discovery of its system of gold quartz veins. The major veins are roughly parallel and dip into the western side of Pine Valley, which drains the southern slope of the range. Previous operations had cut the upper portion of four major veins with two tunnels over 1000 ft. apart, when the present operating company drove a third tunnel, called the Coulter, at the level of the valley over 1000 ft. lower to intersect the most easterly major vein at over 6200 ft. from the portal.

I went to an underground limestone mine recently to demonstrate the use of borehole liners. The liners were for horizontal holes in a normal “V” cut tunnel round. I hadn’t been in this mine for about 40 years. What a change. Way back they used cap and fuse and lit each fuse individually with a blowtorch. The face was about 40 feet wide and 14 to 16 feet high. They used ladders to get to the upper holes. The rounds were mostly slab rounds. I never saw this happen but had heard several times that the first holes were going off before the last holes were lit. I guess if this was true the use of slab rounds was a plus for safety. As far as I know they never had an accident but it was a scary procedure. There were a lot of scary procedures in the past and thankfully things have changed.

Seismic tomographic imaging, based on the same principles as a medical CAT Scan (Computer-Aided-Tomography). has been used for many years in the oil industry for large-scale subsurface stratigraphic characterization. and has most recently been applied to various structure- and stress-related problems in the coal industry. New developments in signal processing have greatly enhanced the speed, resolution, and range of applications of topographic imaging in underground settings, and recent innovations in data acquisition hardware have further increased data reliability and repeatability. Whereas past structure mapping applications relied on Seismic velocity and/or attenuation tomopraphy within an enclosed seismic source gram receiver array, recent developments in "True Reflective Tomography- (TRT TM) have expanded the application of this technology considerably. For example, in-seam TRT TM seismic reflection tray now he used to image structure, and/or old workings from one general location in the mine face areas of mains and panel developments) well ahead of planned developments largely eliminating the need to probe-hole drill on regular intervals. This new reflective technology bas also been combined with traditional cross-hole seismic tomography-providing a comprehensive, powerful tool for velocity attenuation. and reflective imagine utilizing the same source/receiver array data sets (borehole-to-borehole. borehole-to-entry and entry-to-entry). These new developments in data acquisition and image processing have greatly expanded the variety of applications for tomographic site characterization allowing the mine operator considerable flexibility to cost-effectively characterize previously inaccessible areas of the property. This paper presents examples of 2-D and 3-D .seismic topographic imaging applied to (1) the location of old works in Appalachian room-and-pillar operations and (2) the identification of anomalous zones ahead of mining/tunneling developments these applications demonstrate the state-of-the-art in seismic ground imaging using velocity, attenuation. aril reflection techniques land combinations thereon, and further illustrate the flexibility of data acquisition from a variety of tinning arid tunneling settings. Recent examples are presented from projects in the United States and Europe.

In studies of mine and tunnel ventilation conducted by engineers of the Bureau of Mines , various smokes are used to determine flow of air , direction of the currents , and the rate of mixing . The instrument for generating streams of sulphur trioxide (SO ) smoke , shown in the drawing herewith, has been found helpful , convenient and practicable for such purposes ; it is also especially useful in some places where fire for generating smokes is not permissible . The apparatus consists simply of a glass tube containing fuming sulphuric acid on granular pumice stone , attached to a rubber syringe bulb . When a squeeze of the bulb blows air through the tube , a stream of dense white smoke evolves, which follows and makes visible the air currents . The tubes after preparation are hermetically sealed to prevent deterioration . When ready for use , they are easily broken open at a file scratch for the purpose on both tips , and inserted into a rubber nipple at the bulb . Sometimes it is of advantage to attach them to a longer rubber tube leading to the bulb . Tubes of the size shown (about 1/2 inch outside diameter by 5 inches long) are usually sufficient for the needs of a day . Thereafter they cease to fume because the acid absorbs moisture from the air and looses its effectiveness . Smaller sizes of tubes and larger have been made , but the size shown has proved most practicable . Immediately after a person has finished using a tube it should be buried or disposed of in a place where it will not be touched by shoes or clothing, or come in contact with wooden floors , furniture , or metals , because the acid , which will eventually leak from the tubes , is highly corrosive . -- Reports of Investigations , Department of the Interior , Bureau of Mines .

SOMEWHAT biased by pride in twentieth century achievements, most of us mining engineers and diamond-drill operators look upon core drilling as a relatively modern practice. The invention of the diamond drill is generally ascribed to Rudolf Leschot, who made use of diamonds in 1846 in drilling blast holes in the Mont Cenis tunnel in Switzerland. In vain we search Agricola and other early writers on mining for signs of diamond drilling. We have, therefore, concluded that it was unknown until the middle of the last century. The trouble with this conclusion, as most prospectors will tell us, is that we "don't dig deep enough"; for it now appears that the archeologists have been putting one over on us for the last fifty years.
