The implications of blast damage are harmful in both economic and physical sense. To understand the mysterious nature of blast damage assessment and prediction, field work was done by driving an experimental tunnel in the bench of a quartzite quarry. On the basis of the blast vibration monitoring records, a model was developed to predict the PPV at different distances from a blasthole. Critical particle velocity for damage and the output of the prediction model were used to delineate the extent of damage for different explosives. The predictory model was tested by designing a special blast and the burdens for the back holes have been recommended. The relationship between the critical particle velocity for "Fall Off' and the critical particle velocity for damage has been established. The existing criteria for blast damage have also been renewed in this paper.

In situ stress on the scale of a tunnel or mine may be distorted by geologic structures. The resulting variations in in situ stress have a direct bearing on the potential for mining-induced seismicity. New evidence collected from the Lucky Friday mine by US Bureau of Mines researchers, as well as a review of previous case studies, demonstrated that in situ stress variations affect the [spatial] distribution of mining-induced seismicity. Although overcore stress measurements have been useful in these studies. they are too expensive and, depending, on conditions, may be too difficult to collect. However, information on borehole and raise breakouts: deformation of mine openings: and patterns of seismicity, ground-control problems and rock-burst damage can be used to build a stress database. In conjunction with maps of mine structure and geology and models of rockmass behavior, this database can then be used to build a map of in situ stress variations. Such a map could provide a means of anticipating patterns of mining-induced seismicity and. Thus, could be the basis for planning appropriate measures to ameliorate rock-burst hazards.

A compressed-water hydraulic pulse generator (HPG) for nonexplosive blasting of rock and con¬crete is described Energy is stored in the HPG by compressing water to ultrahigh pressure. A large, fastopening valve discharges the com¬pressed water, resulting in a high-energy impulse. The HPG can be used for small-scale bench blasting by discharging the water through a nozzle that is closely fitted into a borehole. A bench blasting system requires an HPG, a drill and an indexing mechanism to allow insertion of the HPG nozzle into a drilled borehole. Systems with discharge energies ranging from 40 to 250 kJ have been used to excavate hard rock, including andesite, granite and quartzite. The largest system can excavate 15 t/h (16.5 stph) of massive quartzite based on a 2-min cycle time for hole drilling. Blasting with an ultrahigh-pressure hydraulic pulse generator was demonstrated as an effective means of excavating hard massive rock under the confined conditions of a tunnel opening or underground sloping panel. MACHINE mining on the pitch plays an important part in the produc-tion schedule at the Salem Hill Colliery of the Haddock Mining Co. This mine is just outside the city of Pottsville, in Schuylkill County, along the southern border of the Anthracite Region. The entrance to the mine is through a cross-measure tunnel 15 ft. above water level and running north 1500 ft. until it strikes the Rabbit Hole vein, where the machine mining is carried on. The main slope, dipping south, was sunk 1200 ft. in the Rabbit Hole vein with levels turned off at 300-ft. intervals. The vein is from 24 to 30 in. thick on a varying pitch of 20° to 40°. The overburden has differed from 50 to 466 ft., the most recent work having the maximum overburden. Immediately over the Rabbit Hole vein is a seam of soft sand slate from 1 to 4 ft. thick which presents a problem at times because it dis-integrates rapidly when exposed to the air. It will crack up and fall without any audible warning, therefore the workmen must always be on the alert, watching for loose slabs. The main top is sandstone, vary-ing in thickness from 8 to 20 ft. The bottom rock is similar to the top, but is finer grained and subject to a more complete disintegration. The vein has a 3 to 4-in. shelly band along the bottom, and all under-cutting has been done in this soft band.

Introduction The endeavours to mechanise the shaft sinking operations have led to the development of shaft boring using a V-Mole. The method implies competent ground and a pilot hole of sufficient verticality. This connects the top and the bottom of the shaft and serves for air ventilation and the transport of mullock. The shaft boring machine - nick name V-Mole - with a general pattern similar to a tunnel-borer reames the pilot hole to the designed diameter of the shaft. (Figure 1) The excavating of the rock, the removal of the mullock from the face and the lining of the shaft wall are done simultaneously. If they can be done also continuously this than creates a high potential of productivity. The verticality of the shaft can be garanteed due to the laser beam guided steering system. The diameter of the shaft is variable in steps of 0.5 m between 6.0 and 10 m in accordance with the need. It decides the capacity of the V-Mole to be applied. The depth of the shaft does not depend on the machine. It is practically unlimited as long as a suitable pilot hole is available. Up to 1988 almost 12.656 m of shaft have been drilled on 40 individual projects in Germany and the U.S.A. using a V-Mole. The rocks penetrated were Carboniferous sediments consisting of Sandstones, Shales, Conglomerates and Coal seams. The average uniaxial compressive strength was in the range of 300 - 700 Mpa with a maximum of 1700 Mpa in some singular sandstones.

Many hard rock tunneling projects, where the majority of excavation can be accomplished with TBMs, will still require considerable specialized excavation which can not be done with a TBM. This secondary excavation, involving cross cuts, galleries, flattening of the invert, increases in bore diameter, et cetera, may be accomplished with conventional drill and blast, applied on a small scale and usually with fracture control techniques, or with mechanical splitters. The problems of using explosives in many of these cases and the high cost of mechanical splitting excavation make the consideration of other approaches attractive. The PCF rock excavation method, which has recently been reduced to commercial practice for mine-development excavation, offers an attractive alternative to drill and blast and mechanical splitters. With the PCF method the rock is excavated utilizing a small-charge, propellant-driven, controlled, penetrating-cone fracture process. Excavation is carried out continuously by combining the PCF hardware with integrated mucking capabilities on a carrier which remains at the excavation point. In addition to the benefit of providing for complicated excavation geometry, the PCF method also causes minimal damage to the remaining rock which will significantly reduce ground support requirements. In very bad ground, the continuous nature of PCF excavation allows ground support to be applied as limited sections are exposed thus reducing both the duration and extent that the ground would be free to move. Data on PCF excavation parameters, as measured in actual mining operations, indicate that crosscuts, galleries and the like could be excavated at considerable cost savings compared to drill and blast or mechanical splitters.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the product-of-combustion (POC) characteristics of combustible materials used in typical coal mining operations in a series of experiments conducted in an intermediate-scale fire tunnel. The materials examined include wood cribs, transformer fluid, coal, conveyor belting, brattice cloth, and ventilation ducting. Smoke and toxic gases evolved from burning materials contribute to panic conditions and hinder escape. Smoke irritates and obscures vision, while toxic gases physically debilitate and disorient the victims. However, POC emissions may be used for early warning fire detection. POC levels will vary not only between materials but also between stages of combustion and the conditions in which they are burning. This report summarizes the POC characteristics of each material and evaluates their effectiveness for early warning mine fire detection. Results show that smoke was the POC most readily detected from the smoldering materials tested.

Ore bodies which were once uneconomical to mine by conventional methods such as tunneling or open pits, have become attractive due to the development of nonconventional techniques, involving considerably less capital expenditure. Technologies such as uranium solution mining or in-situ leaching, have enabled commercial scale mining and milling of relatively small ore pockets of lower grade, and may make a significant contribution to overall U.S. uranium supplies during the next 20 years. Commercial size solution mining production facilities have operated since late 1975. Solution mining involves the pumping of ground water, fortified with oxidizing and complexing agents into an ore body, leaching and solubilizing the uranium in-situ, and then pumping the solutions to the surface where they are fed to a processing plant. Processing involves ion exchange, precipitation, calcining, and packaging operations. This paper presents an overview of the solution mining process and the health physics monitoring programs developed over the last four years at several production facilities as a result of the radiological character of these processes. Although many radiological aspects of the process are similar to that of conventional mills, conventional-type tailings as such are not generated. Some special monitoring considerations are presented which are required due to the manner in which radon gas is evolved in the process and the unique aspects of controlling solution flow patterns underground. An overview of the major aspects of the health physics compliance and monitoring programs that have been developed are discussed.

INTRODUCTION The measurement of displacements in soil or rock in the vicinity of underground openings provide valuable information for a better understanding of the behaviour of the structure. On the basis of systematic observations conclusions can be drawn concerning - safety of the opening in the various stages of excavation - effectiveness of the support measures - nature of the rock pressure to be expected - influence of the construction of the opening on neighbouring structures (settlements of foundations, underpassing other tunnels etc.) - comparison of theoretical predictions with the actual structural behaviour (1). Today there are several types of suitable instruments available that can be employed at reasonable costs for such investigations (2). The most important ones are the multiple point borehole extensometer, the inclinometer and the multiple point borehole deflectometer. As is well-known, the extensometer only measures the displacement component in the borehole axis, while the inclinometer and the deflectometer provide monitoring of rock mass movements normal to the borehole axis. In the following a new instrument is described, which has been given the name Extenso-Deflectometer ISETH. In this single piece of equipment certain features of the above-mentioned three types of borehole instruments are incorporated. it enables the measurement of all three components of the displacement vector at consecutive points along the borehole, the axis of which may have any direction in space. The Churchill Falls Development will eventually be the largest source of hydroelectric power in North America. Churchill Falls was discovered in 1839, but until recent years it was not practical to begin development of this site to tap the 7 million horsepower available. This $1 billion project is located in Labrador, 700 miles northeast of Montreal and 650 miles northwest of St. Johns, Nfld. The construction will divert the Churchill River 5 miles upstream from the 245 foot Churchill Falls. Rapids above and below the Falls, together with the Falls proper, give a natural head of 1,040 feet. In contrast to the basic simplicity of the surface installations, the powerhouse labyrinth is astounding in size and complexity. The largest in the world, it consists of three major chambers - the powerhouse, 972 feet long by 81 feet wide and 154 feet high; the surge chamber, 763 feet long, 40 feet to 64 feet wide and 148 feet high; and the transformer gallery, 856 feet long by 50 feet wide and 39 feet high. Optimization of the rock cutting performance plays a major role in the tunneling operation. For a given set of tool and cutting environment, rock fragments may be chipped away in numerous manners and it is crucial to understand and be able to predict the dynamics at the cutter-rock interface. This paper presents rational and realistic 3D finite element modeling of rock cutting where typical computational issues ?such as contact formulation, appropriate rock material response, mesh distortion, and crack propagation? are overcome. Cutting forces and failure mechanisms in this finite element analysis are successfully validated by laboratory single-cutter scratching tests in sandstone.

After 15 years of production, 91 Mt (100 million st) of ore mined and nearly 227 kt (500 million lb) of molybdenum produced, Climax Molybdenum Co.'s Henderson Mine and Mill are being modernized as a new mining level is brought on line. The $40 million investment in mine development and plant modernization positions the Henderson complex as one of the largest, low-cost primary molybdenum producers for the next 15 years. Henderson history The Henderson Mine and Mill facilities are located on the east and west flanks of the Continental Divide about 80 km (50 miles) west of Denver, CO. The underground mine and surface mill sites are linked by 16 km (10 mile) of railroad tunnel and 8 km (5 mile) of surface trackage. The mine, railroad and mill were built between 1968 and 1976 at a cost of $500 million. Each has operated at various levels of production over the past 15 years. The Henderson Mine was originally developed using a highly mechanized, panel caving mining system. Over the past 10 years, mining methods, equipment and railroad operations have been improved to position Henderson as one of the most productive and lowest cost underground mining operations. At the same time, the mill and concentrator facilities were upgraded to reduce costs and improve product quality. During this time, manpower was reduced from 2000 to 560 employees. These 560 people increased productivity to 54 t (60 st) per total manshift. They reduced operating costs by 50%. And they dramatically improved safety performance. However, as the 1990s approached, the modernization of the Henderson mining and milling complex and the development of the new 7700 mining level became the primary goals to guide Henderson into the 21st century.

During the past few years the underground mining industry and the big hole drilling industry have been involved in a flirtatious courtship, but until recently this courtship did not appear to be taken too seriously by either party. However, many of the promises made by the big hole industry are beginning to come true. Improvements have been made steadily in techniques of mechanical boring of large diameter shafts, raises and tunnels, thus making the big hole industry a more stable partner in the eyes of the mining industry. The mining industry too has made many changes in planning that make mining more attractive to the big hole industry. If there is to be a marriage between big hole drilling and mining, we should certainly take a look at the background of the big hole drilling industry, and examine the three main features of big hole drilling to determine how each applies to mining. Shaft Drilling Since 1950, numerous large diameter shafts have been drilled using rotary drilling techniques. Most of the larger diameter shafts have been drilled for the AEC for underground nuclear testing purposes. However, since 1960 several shafts have also been drilled for various mining companies, particularly in the United States. In 1967, rotary drilling shafts were either completed or in progress at the mining companies listed in Table I.

Tunnels in urban areas generally require deep excavations in soils under the groundwater table. In The Netherlands uplift loads are generally taken by piles installed into dense sand layers, which are hard to penetrate. To avoid nuisance and damage to the environment, piles often need to be installed using vibration free methods, which also have the advantage of low noise levels during installation. Drilling piles and obtaining a high uplift resistance is a contradiction in itself. Franki has adopted several installation methods based on the injection of grout during drilling and/or post grouting to overcome the difficulty of hard layers. This report presents two projects, situated in Rotterdam and Sneek, where vertical tension piles in floors, subject to high uplift loads, have been used. It also explores a project in Zeebrugge (Belgium), where tension piles are installed at an inclination of 1:1 to anchor a diaphragm wall for a quay construction. Test results presented in this report show, that vibration free and soil displacing piles can be installed in very dense sand layers and that a high uplift resistance can be achieved. It is also shown, that a variety of installation methods is available, even in limited space.

In 1973, the Subcommittee on Contracting Practices, U. S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology, National Academy of Sciences, under the able chairmanship of A. A. Mathews, Engineering Consultant, now residing at Kaunakokai, Hawaii, undertook the task of developing recommendations for improving the performance of underground construction work, reducing the costs of such work and minimizing the adverse atmosphere in which owners and contractors were performing their respective functions. The author of this paper and C. F. Palmetier, a highly qualified engineer, were thereupon appointed as staff assistants to the Subcommittee, to conduct a study of existing practices and relationships in Western Europe and in the United States, to formulate recommendations, for consideration by the Subcommittee and the participants in a future workshop, as to desirable improvements in United States contracting practices and relationships. The study, conducted during 1973 and 1974, involved personal interviews of a total of 162 owners, engineers, contractors, lawyers, and educators throughout the United States and in 7 European countries, the analysis of 178 replies to questionnaires sent to individuals and firms involved directly or indirectly in construction, and a workshop, near Napa, California, attended by 53 representatives of all segments of the construction community. The resulting report, entitled "Better Contracting for Underground Construction", was submitted by the Subcommittee to the National Academy of Sciences, which approved its publication in 1974 by the National Technical Information Service. It is generally accepted that South African coal mines have gone through the mechanization of most of its underground mines, and while there certainly were a lot of productivity improvements, the lack of visibility on these machines operating underground still leave vast areas for improvement. The average actual cutting time still remains very low, in the 30 per cent area, which leaves significant improvement possible. Currently all analysis is carried out using hand-written reports. Unfortunately this is subjective and often inaccurate because of human interpretation. In addition in order to avoid costly component failure, a monitoring system is required to warn of eminent failures and condition monitoring. The challenge faced was to supply and install a system that was ‘Open’ and could be retrofitted to existing machines in operation because of the current standard of communication links to the underground sections. In addition it was intended to use, existing ‘off the shelf’ software and hardware and adapting this for the harsh underground mining conditions wherever possible in order to reduce costs. As development occurred, as with all technology, doors opened to other opportunities such as, remote access data logging and Internet based reporting. We focused on the Voest Alpine Bergtechnik (VA) range of continuous miners, as need arose to achieve the desired cost improvements because of the strategy of service contracts the subsidiary company, Voest Alpine Mining & Tunnelling (VAMT) offer the mining industry in South Africa. This paper describes a data logging system that has been installed on various continuous miners that provides data in real time, on line, and that could be expanded to any electrically supplied underground mobile or stationary mining machine.

THE Institute assembled in Packer Hall of the Lehigh University, the President, Mr. David Thomas, of Catasauqua in the chair. Professor Henry Coppée, President of the Lehigh University, made an address of welcome to the Institute, and placed at its disposal a convenient hall for purposes of meeting. Mr. Thomas tendered his resignation as President of the Institute, as advancing years prevented him from actively participating in its meetings. The Institute declined to accept the resignation, and, on the assurance that active duties would not be expected of him, Mr. Thomas was induced to withdraw it. Invitations were received from Mr. B. C. Webster, President of the Lehigh Zinc Company, to visit the mines and works of the company; from Mr. Charles Brodhead, to visit the Chapman Slate Quarries; and from the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company, to visit their works at Summit Hill and Mauch Chunk and the Nesquehoning Tunnel. The Council reported the names of persons already elected in the two classes of members and associates. The following resolutions were passed : Resolved, That a committee of three be appointed, who shall take into consideration the printing and publishing of papers originating with the Institute, and that a uniform system as regards size and execution be adopted. The committee appointed consisted of Messrs. R. W. Raymond, E. B. Coxe, and the Secretary. Resolved, That the Council design and prepare a seal for the Institute at the earliest practicable time. INTRODUCTION Deformations and failure of rock masses in elopes, foundations or tunnels can be caused by water pressures. On the other hand, deformations of a rock mass affect the flow of water (and hence water pressures) by changing joint apertures. Including the coupling between flow and deformation effects is therefore important both in assessing the stability and deformation of a rock mass and in determining the amount of seepage taking place through it. The model that will be presented hare treats the coupling of the flow and deformation behavior of a rock mass. Deformations are modeled using the Rigid Block Method (Distinct Element Method) (Cundall, 19741, that is by assuming that the rock mass is composed of rigid blocks with deformable contact points. Flow is modeled by recognizing its discontinuous features, as occuring in a system of interconnected conduits formed by the joints. The program can also deal with problems involving free-surface flow. Example problems involving representations of rock masses are presented. Coupled flow modeling of interconnected conduits should be contrasted to equivalent-continuum models on the one hand and to pipe network models on the other hand. Continuous models substitute an anisotropically permeable continuum for the discrete flow that occurs in rock joints. Pipe or parallel plates represent the other extreme of existing models; they account for the discontinuous character of the flow problem, but cannot model rock mass deformation and failure. The coupled rigid block-flow model can eliminate most of these restrictions. In 1999, INCO Limited Mines Research, in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, took delivery of a MeycoRobojet Logica Spraymobile, a computerized concrete spraying system. The Spraymobile is a self-contained mobile machine capable of applying spray-on ground support in underground applications. The Logica component of the Robojet is designed to control the operation of the Robojet, as well as scan and map the tunnel geometry prior to the spraying operation. The Robojet can be operated in various modes, from manual to automatic operation. In the automatic mode the computer controls the standoff distance, angle, and motion of the spraying jet. In 2000, INCO Limited, working with Meyco Equipment of Switzerland (a division of MasterBuilders Technologies), detailed a plan to create a tele-operation package for controlling the spraying process from a surface location at INCO's Mines Research Test mine. With the RobojetLogica operating in automatic mode, the operator at the machine becomes a process monitor. Since the Logica system controls the key spraying parameters of nozzle distance and nozzle angle to the sprayed surface, the operator could easily monitor and control the Robojet Logica from aremote location. The benefits of operating underground mobile mining (drills and LHDs)equipment from a surface location has been demonstrated at INCO Limited, however, the abilityto control a ground support operation (shotcrete spraying) from surface has not been attempted until now. This paper will describe the Spraymobile shotcreting system, the development of the tele-operation package for the Robojet Logica, as well as modifications to the original Spraymobile for implementing the tele-remote package on the Robojet Logica at the Mines Research test mine.

Summitville is an old mining district located south of Wolf Creek Pass in the southern San Juan Mountains of Colorado at an elevation higher than 3500 m (11,500 ft). The Summitville mine site is about 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Del Norte. The current mine, developed by Galactic Resources Ltd. and its subsidiaries in the mid-1980s, is on the north facing side of South Mountain. The area is drained by Cropsy Creek to the east and Wightman Fork to the north, both tributaries to the Alamosa River. Mining in the Summitville area began in 1870 when James Wightman discovered placer gold on what is now known as Wightman Fork of the Alamosa River. The first vein-type deposits were located in 1873 on South Mountain near the current Summitville Mine. Mining began in the district in 1875 and continued sporadically through 1942. Major mining episodes occurred from 1875 to 1894 and from 1926 to 1942. Total gold production from the mining district through 1949 totaled 7.5 t (240,000 oz). An additional 7.7 t (249,000 oz) were produced during Galactic's tenure. Natural degradation of the outcropping sulfide-rich veins in the area and the early mining activity, including development of the Reynolds, Dexter and Iowa drainage tunnels in the late 1890s, have polluted the streams draining the area with heavy metals and acidic water. Names of the various tributaries to Wightman Fork, such as Iron, Alum and Bitter Creek, testify to this natural pollution. This degradation has reduced, or killed, aquatic life in several area creeks, including Wightman Fork, for many years before recent mining activity.
