Methods for reducing the cyclic nature of drill and blast tunneling operations have been long needed. A miniature blasting system using 10 mm (.375 in.) holes, 0.91 m (36 in.) deep, and blasting only one hole at a time makes it practical for men to work behind a shield, remaining at the face during the entire process. A prototype automated module was developed to drill, load the hole and initiate the detonation without moving from the hole. A unique cost effective gell explosive and a novel, low cost initiation method were developed.

The problem of eliminating the hazards of hoisting in mines has been with us since the industry passed its earliest stages, when coal and ore could be won from surface working and tunnels. At first, safety devices were introduced as means of decreasing the amount of labor necessary to produce the mineral, or to increase the amount that could be obtained from a certain opening. For example, crude ladders replaced winding footpaths or steps cut into the walls of the pit or shaft, decreasing the distance it was necessary to carry the product to the surface and eliminating, to some extent, the hazard introduced by the precarious footing afforded by such paths and steps. Latcr, instead of being carried from the pit on the backs of men, the product was hoisted in buckets or baskets on a rope passing over a pulley or around a windlass. Thus the capacity of the pit was considerably increased, and the hazard due to making many trips up and down the shaft was eliminated. From such beginnings accident prevention in mine hoisting advanced with the importance of the industry, until at present hoisting compares favorably with other branches of the mining industry with reference to safe practices. As in the other branches, this progress has been accomplished along two general lines—by legislation, rules, and education, and by the installation of safety devices. Though due credit must be given the former, it is not so satisfactory as the latter. Legislation, to be effective, requires a policing and inspection system to guarantee enforcement, such as we cannot hope to inaugurate. Rules may be satisfactory so long as the employer controls the labor market, and dismissal or some other form of discipline is an effective means of insuring obedience to the rules; but where labor demand is in excess of the supply, or where labor organizations are in control, such measures are not effective. An educational campaign will draw attention to hazards and may awaken a desire to avoid accidents by exercising the proper care. It is necessary, therefore, to place our reliance mainly on mechanical devices to prevent accidents, and to depend as little as possible on laws,

The mining district is located in the northeasterly part of Nevada, between the Jarbidge River on the west and the East Fork of the Jarbidge on the east. The northern boundary of the district is but a few miles south of the Idaho state line—the gold-bearing area extending from this point south, for 5 or 6 miles. • The Jarbidge Mountains, in which the ore deposits occur, range from 5000 to 11,000 ft. in elevation, the most important mines being situated about 7000 ft. or higher. The town of Jarbidge lies along the Jarbidge River and is reached by stage from Rogerson, Ida., the nearest railroad point. During the summer months, the camp may be entered from the south by way of Deeth, Nev., but no regular transportation facilities are available over this route. History The mineral deposits were not discovered until 1909, when D. A. Bourne, panning along the river bank, found gold in. the gravel at the mouth of a small stream flowing into the Jarbidge. He prospected in the vicinity of this stream, later known as Bourne Gulch, and shortly after located the North Star claims. During the following spring and summer (1910), the camp of Jarbidge grew from nothing to a town of 2000 people and the hills surrounding it were practically all taken up by mining claims. Most of the work done during the first year or two consisted of trenching and open-cut prospecting. Tunneling was started on a number of claims and many veins were uncovered. Mills were built and operated on a few properties, notably the Pavlak and the North Star. These ran only a few months, however, when they were closed down because of extraction and financial difficulties. A period of development followed in which the majority of the present producing mines were opened. The Elkoro Mines Co. acquired a number of claims in 1915 and started work on the present mill in 1917. Since that time other properties have been taken over until this company is by far the largest operator in the district. The Pennsylvania Legislature, on March 13, 1837, passed an act authorizing the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co. to construct a railway to connect the North Branch Division of the Pennsylvania Canal with the slack water navigation of the Lehigh River; the navigation company accepted this act on May 10, 1837. Edwin A. Douglas, chief engineer for the navigation company, located the route for this railway from White Haven to Wilkes-Barre, which was called the Lehigh & Susquehanna Railroad. The object was to transport coal from the Wyoming Valley, of Pennsylvania, to the Atlantic seaboard. This railway was considered a marvelous piece of engineering, as it included a tunnel nearly 55 mi. long, and a series of inclines, or planes, up which the cars laden with coal were raised from the vicinity of Ashley to the summit of the mountain near Solomon's Gap, whence they were taken to White Haven by rail. There the coal was transferred to canal boats. In June, 1862, floods almost completely destroyed the upper division of the canal, so on March 4, 1863, the Pennsylvania Legislature passed an act prohibiting its restoration, but granted a charter for the construction of a railway from White Haven to Mauch Chunk to connect with the line from White Haven to Wilkes-Barre, previously built. On March 16, 1864, a supplementary act was passed extending the Lehigh & Susquehanna Railroad to Easton, Pa. This completed a direct all-rail route from Wilkes-Barre to the New York harbor (by way of the Central Railroad of New Jersey). Up to this time, all freight and passenger traffic passed over the planes, but in 1866 and 1867 there was constructed what was known as the "back track" down the mountain side between Solomon's Gap and Ashley over which all the passenger traffic and empty cars thereafter passed; it is now known as part of the main line. For the handling of the heavy coal traffic, however, this would have involved a continuous climb from Ashley, 170.27 mi., from New York, to Solomon's Gap, 157.8 mi. from New York, or a distance of 12.47 mi., and a total ascent of 1013.75 ft., composed of grades 95.61, 83, and 51.4 ft. per mi., respectively, and

SUMMARY La Granja copper deposit, in terms of volume, is among the five largest deposits in the world and represents reserves of three thousand million tones. The field consists of a 40 m. thick layer of copper lying over the secondary ore and further down the primary copper. The flotation process has indicated a recovery rate of 88 to 90 percent and concentrates of 27 to 32 percent of copper. The acid leaching process of low grade ore produces financially acceptable results. To carry out the project, it is necessary to build long distance pipelines and a port. Both the Feasibility Study and the Environmental Impact Study on the project have been approved by the Peruvian government. INTRODUCTION La Granja is located in the district of Querecoto, province of Chota, in the department of Cajamarca, in the Northwest of the country (Figure 1). Geographically it is situated on the eastern slopes of the Andean mountains at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,700 m.a.s.1. (Figure 1). The site is an 8 hour car ride from the city of Chiclayo, capital of the department. The first 60 km. are over a paved road and the remaining distance is over a narrow hard dirt road. The copper porphyry of La Granja was discovered between 1969 to 1971 during some geochemical prospecting activities carried out by the State mining institution, Ingeomin (currently Ingemmet). From 1978 to 1982, Ingemmet continued with its geochemical and geophysical studies supported by a German technical assistance program. A total of 19 bore- holes were drilled (5,814 m.) and a 90 m. long tunnel made. This study calculated reserves of 175 million MT. In 1993, Minero Peru drew up a technical-financial study based on the above studies and proposed a 12 year extraction operating program: 20,000 MT daily using the leaching process, followed by 13 years of operation using the flotation process with the same daily volumes. Conditions at the properties of the Consolidated Coal Co. had reached a point where improvements were almost impractical. The mines, sunk years ago, had shafts and entries so small as to preclude the use of large mine cars. A radical change was necessary in the type of mining and also in the type of mine to accommodate such haulage units. After due consideration, the company decided to enter the field of trackless mining, utilizing belt conveyors and chain-flight conveyors, the belt conveyors to take the long haul, and the chain-flight conveyors to be used for gathering. It was decided not to sink a shaft, hut to drive a slope on an inclination of 17½°, which the company believes to be about the limit on which coal can be carried on a belt without rolling back unduly. Sinking the Slope It was decided, in sinking the slope, to make an opencut until rock was reached, which was some 65 ft. below the surface, and then to drive the slope through an inclined tunnel from that point. In making the open-cut, the schedule called for the removal of about 25,000 cu. yd. of clay, holding the banks on an inclination of one and a half to one, the thought being to make this cut in a minimum of time, put in a reinforced concrete slope, and then back-fill. Difficulty was experienced because the clay was of a sort that was called "subsiding base" material by contractors visiting the job. In other words, a "squeeze" occurred, the pressure causing the floor of the cut to move up just as it does in many mines where the coal is underlain by thick fire clay and inadequate pillars have been left. It was necessary to move the waste banks back from the edge of the cut 700 or 800 ft., and even then the floor could not be controlled, the result being that almost 100,000 cu. yd. of clay was handled before the rock was reached. A concrete slope was then rapidly constructed, using 95 tons of special-shaped reinforcing iron. The floor of this slope was made 30 in. thick at the bottom, and 17 in. thick at the top, the sidewalls being 18 in.

INTRODUCTION Coal workers' pneumoconiosis and sili- cosis are only two of several diseases which are rlassed as pneumoconiosis. These are respiratory diseases caused by dusts which are inhaled and accumulated in the lungs. The individual particles of dust cannot be seen by the human eye. They are so small that they escape the natural cleansing mechanism of the nose and air passages and make their way down to the terminal air sacs of the lung where they injure the cells and cause the formation of scar tissue. Consequently, if there is exposure to high concentrations of dust over a period of time - usually, a number of years - the amount of scar tissue increases and begins to impair breathing. As a result, the miner develops shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing ad-if exposure continues - this progresses to permanent disability and frequently to death. Death is often due to pulmonary heart disease, the effect of stress on the heart 2s it tries to compensate for the weakened lungs. Specifically, silicosis is an occupational lung disease caused by the accumulation of free silica (quartz) in the lungs. Silicosis is considered the most important form of pneumoconiosis, not only because of its seriousness as a respiratory crippler, but also because of the large number of workers who risk contracting it in a variety of occupations. Quartz is one of the most common substances of the earth's crust, estimated at about 60 percent. Silicosis has been found in coal, metal and granite miners, as well as in other workers, such as sandblasters and pottery makers. Silicosis is also known to predispose the lung to tuberculosis and to increase the chances that a worker will contract chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The seriousness of silicosis was tragically brought to public attention about 50 years ago. During 1932-34, workers were involved in digging a tunnel through rock at Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. While their exposure time was relatively short, they developed silicosis because of the high concentrations of quartz. By 1936, 476 workers had died of silicosis and about 1500 were believed to have the disease (Washington Post, 1982). It is difficult to tell how many coal miners have silicosis. Because x-rays and breathing function tests do not show the difference the type of pneumoconiosis is generally diagnosed by the miner's work history. For example, if a worker

The Similkameen mine is located about 100 miles east of Vancouver, British Columbia, and ten miles west of Princeton, where the mine personnel live. Princeton was the first town in the British Columbia interior, originally the home of Cree and Blackfoot Indians and later settled by men of the Hudson's Bay Company, miners, cattlemen, and others looking for gold. After gold, there were coal mines and then copper mines . The Granby Consolidated Mining Company, Limited, operated the Copper Mountain ore bodies from 1926 to 1930 and from 1937 to 1957, mining 34 million tons of about 170 copper ore, mainly from underground. In 1966, Newmont Mining Corporation acquired the Ingerbelle property on the west side of the Similkameen River. Newmont then purchased the assets of Granby and formed Similkameen Mining Company to develop and operate the Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies on both sides of the Similkameen River canyon. The Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies lie within rocks composed of andesite tuffs, agglomerates, and argillites. Chalcopyrite mineralization occurs as a dissemination. Original ore reserves were estimated at approximately 75 million tons grading 0.52% copper. Mining is carried out on a three-shift, seven-day-week schedule at a rate of about 60,000 tons of ore and waste per day with four 10 cu yd P & H 1900 shovels which mine and load a fleet of 100-ton Lectra Haul trucks. Among the unique features of the design and construction of the Similkameen project was the construction of 4. 5 miles (7. 24 km) of new Trans-Provincial No. 3 highway by the company to the specifications of the British Columbia Department of Highways. The old highway traversed the Ingerbelle pit area. Along the relocated highway is a 4, 000 ft (1219 m) long berm which conceals the mine pit. This area has been replanted and now looks like the original forest scenery. Another interesting feature is that the tailings from the concentrator flow by gravity over a 1000 ft (34% m) suspension bridge, which crosses the Similkameen River canyon then passes through a tunnel to the dam site, a distance of 59,000 ft (17,980 m) to the cyclone station. When the Copper Mountain ore bodies are mined, the ore will be transported by belt conveyor on a second suspension bridge across the canyon to the Ingerbelle concentrator. WHEN the Age of Machinery was suddenly thrust upon civilization about the beginning of the nineteenth century, an unprecedented demand for mineral resources sprang up. This demand brought about the rapid development of the known ore deposits and the discovery of such other deposits as could be encountered by energetic and canny pros-pectors. Thus in the countries now reasonably ac-cessible nearly all orebodies have been located except those which are totally concealed even from the eyes and "senses" of experienced and expert prospectors. The high rate of exhaustion of known ore deposits and the necessity of looking farther and farther ahead for raw materials as a matter of insurance on the stu-pendous capital outlays involved in mining, develop-ment, and conversion operations, have resulted in excep-tional activity in three different fields of effort. The first is purely geographic. Prospectors are now pene-trating the few hitherto inaccessible regions in the hope of stumbling upon exposed ore deposits or locating visible indications of their presence. The second is chemical. Industrial chemists and metallurgists are seeking to facilitate the exploitation of lower grade ores to find methods of recovering valuable metals from common substances. In the third field of effort. lie the activities of the economic geologist and the mining engineer, who en-deavor to locate concealed ore deposits, which would remain hidden from the prospector, no matter. how expert or conscientious he might be. Obviously the task which such a man must face is both exacting and indefinite, and the tools which he has heretofore been permitted to bring to it are, for the most part, abstract-a knowledge of certain fundamental princi-ples and processes involved in the origin, occurrence, structure, and distribution of deposits. of natural re-sources and of the rocks which form the environments of those deposits, and a process-of reasoning by analogy supplemented by the .use of the diamond drill, or such artificial exposure as the test pit, trench, shaft or tunnel. His primary efforts are usually bent on acquiring a knowledge of the distribution of the rocks-as accurate -is possible-which is a natural prerequisite to any conclusion as to how they became so distributed. Over very extensive areas, however, he meets. the extreme difficulty of being unable to see the rocks, except at rare intervals, since .they have been concealed by an overburden of glacial material, of alluvium, of soil, or of other rocks.

On Aug. 31, 2006, Tropical Storm Ernesto hit the city of Richmond, VA. The Battery Park area was hit particularly hard, as flooding forced an evacuation of the area. A large sinkhole collapsed a sewer line in the Battery Park area, blocking the pipe and causing more serious flooding. This article describes the fast track design, bidding and construction of an emergency tunnel to bypass the collapsed sewer. Innovative value engineering, tunneling and shaft-sinking methods and final lining design all contributed to the success of this project. The storm inundated Richmond, VA with up to 305 mm (12 in.) of rain that, in some areas, caused widespread flooding and damage. One of the hardest hit areas of Richmond was Battery Park. A major trunk sewer in the Battery Park area collapsed and caused local combined sewer and stormwater flooding. The collapsed sewer was a 2.4-m x 76-mm (8-ft- x 3-in.-) wide by 2.7-m- x 152-mm- (9-ft- x 6 in.-) high arch sewer that was constructed in the 1920s and later filled over with municipal solid waste and a soil fill cap to cur-rent elevations. A sinkhole was created in the area of collapse approximately 18 m (60 ft ) deep and 31 m (100 ft) in diameter. This caused the existing arch sewer to become blocked. As a result of this blockage, contaminated floodwaters reached depths in low-lying areas in excess of 8 m (25 ft).

"A new crushing or liberation technique by means of underwater explosion is put forward. This technique is suitable for crushing and liberating various materials, for instance: the electric parts of the discarded portable telephone, CPU from mother-boards of PCs, steel from plastics tubes used as construction materials, waste constructed materials like panels, tungsten carbide scraps, as well as slitting the optical disk (e.g. DVDs), etc. The materials to be crushed are immersed in water and then the explosion is carried out by using only a small amount of explosive. The shock waves in combination with the generated bubbles are very effective in liberating the materials of different densities. It was observed that the metals crushed or liberated by using this technique were leached much faster when compared with the conventional crushing technique. This crushing method can be applied for liberation of many kinds of electric or mechanical tools. Introduction The explosive has been used since Nobel’s invention in 1866. The main practical application of explosion is in the large scale public works, such as dam construction, land development, tunnel, mining and dismantlement of building. The shock wave caused by explosion extremely can generate high pressure able to break the concrete and rock, and other materials. In this study, the crushing and liberation of waste materials was carried out by explosion in water. The idea was to use this technique as a pretreatment stage prior to recycling. The explosion in water can be used to crush hard materials, helping the liberation between different attached materials. The samples used in this experimental work are waste materials such as construction materials, hose, cemented carbide, cellular phone, lithium buttery, DVD-R, etc."

While significant advances have been made in excavation of rock, largely in improvements in drilling, blasting, loading, and haulage, conventional operations have been improved until little feasible increase in efficiency or rate of advance appears possible. Tunnel-boring machines have been developed which will excavate at rapid rates in soft to medium- hard rock. Hypervelocity impact is being intensively investigated as a possible means of cutting and breaking rock, as well as lasers, electric current, explosive drilling, high frequency vibration, etc. The current development and use of high-velocity small-diameter water jets, metallic jets, and projectiles of various materials involve ultra-high-pressure phenomena of fundamental interest. Rock disintegration by water jets has been investigated in the USSR for over a decade. Large-diameter jets of low velocity are used to mine coal, and high-velocity capillary jets will cut and break rocks under laboratory conditions. Velocity ranges for breaking and cutting are dependent upon rock and jet properties, and pulsed jets break some rocks more easily than continuous jets. Spectacular laboratory results have been reported for breakage of unconfined blocks of some types of rocks. Compressors, pressure multipliers, gas explosion chambers, and water cannons have been used to generate jets. Jet properties, such as continuity, unit pressure, total pressure, and stability have been measured. Results agree with theory, although the latter has been established only for relatively low-velocity flow. Diameter, speed of traversing, and frequency of pulsed jets affect rock response. Investigations in Britain have only recently begun consideration of harder rocks and higher velocities, although water jet cores have been found to be more continuous at lower velocities than previously believed. Lower limits of jet velocity for rock cutting were established for the rocks investigated.

Microtunneling has successfully completed both horizontal and vertical curves. This paper covers the historical development of curved microtunneling and a description of one microtunneling project. The completed microtunnel is used for electrical transmission in Japan. The crossing had several concerns including right of way, social disruption, obstructions, the cost of intermediate shafts, and political restrains. In order for this drive to meet all of the imposed restrictions, four horizontal curves and one vertical curve were planned and executed in accordance with the design. Iseki Poly-Tech of Tokyo, Japan designed and built the microtunneling machine to meet the project requirements. Curved microtunneling has been successfully used on fourteen projects in Japan. The reason for a curve has been that the project could not be rerouted, short straight drives could not be used to negotiate the curve, or the project’s social and environmental conditions required a curved tunnel. The following table (Table 1) includes summary information on 14 curved microtunnling projects that have been successfully completed in Japan. The first column is a reference number. Columns two through four include basic project information. The fifth column is the total project distance completed by microtunneling. The sixth column is the project’s microtunneling duration. The seventh column is the machine type and size. All of the machines listed are manufactured by Iseki Poly-Tech of Tokyo, Japan. The size is the internal concrete pipe diameter; all of the projects listed were completed with Japanese standard concrete pipe. The eighth column contains a general description of the soil. The soil type and blow counts are approximately equal to ASTM D 2487 standards. The ninth column lists the radius of the curve and the span distance or the distance microtunneled that included the curve. The radius of a vertical curve is denoted with a “VR”, a span with both a left and right hand curve is denoted with a “S”. Other significant first events are also noted in this column. The first curved microtunneling project was completed in 1982 using a conventional microtunneling machine with standard Japanese concrete pipe and a very long radius curve while maintaining grade for the gravity sewer. The second curved microtunneling project included multiple radii curves, all in the same direction, on a single drive. In 1989, on the fifth curved microtunneling project, a “S” curve was successfully negotiated. On the seventh curved microtunneling project, completed in1995, a tight radius curve was negotiated. In 1996, the eighth project included a vertical curve. The thirteenth curved microtunneling project, completed in 1997, was the first project to utilize a microtunneling machine specifically designed to negotiate curves. This paper describes technology and training that has been identified for underground emergency responders. Historically, underground mine rescue teams have only received training in the course of actual emergencies, or in simulated mine environments, usually on the surface, with placards to identify objects and hazards. Also, while U.S. Federal Regulations require all underground miners to walk escapeways and conduct fie drills every 90 days in a smoke-free environment, this does not fully prepare them for the conditions that will be encountered in real escape situations. Therefore, it is extremely important that miners are provided with adequate technology and that training simulations are conducted in a realistic manner. A series of mine rescue training and mine emergency response development (MERD) exercises, and in-mine smoke training was developed, conducted, and evaluated by state and company teams, and by National Institute For Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) personnel. The training exercises were held at NIOSH's Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL) and operating mines during the past several years. This training resulted in improved technology and training for mine rescue teams, fire brigades, first responders, and miners in general. For example, existing technologies were identified to help responders during exploration and recovery operations. These included various chemical light shapes, strobe lights, light vests, and laser pointers to identify team members. Most of these devices may be used to mark underground areas and certain mine materials. Strobe lights were used for mapping out escapeways and lasers were used to negotiate travel through smoke. Thermal imaging systems allow rescue personnel to see in darkness and through dense smoke, and allows the user to easily locate missing or trapped personnel and heated areas. A hands-free communication system showed potential for enhanced communications between team members, the fresh air base, and command center. A new team lighted-lifeline allows for flexibility in movements of team members during routine tasks and allows them to easily find their fixed position on the lifeline. Of all the technology evaluated by underground personnel, laser lights and lifelines were most beneficial in leading personnel to safety and out of the mine in smoke-filled passageways. A positive-pressure inflatable escape device (IED)/airlock, was used to isolate the "hazardous" environment from fresh air and allow rescue team members to traverse through. An inflatable feed- tube partition that can rapidly block large openings such as underground passageways or tunnels and simultaneously provide a feed-tube for high-expansion foam generators was also deployed during the simulations. These technological advancements have improved the state of readiness for rescue personnel and have increased the chances of survival for all personnel escaping from underground emergencies.

Approximately 2,000 persons are killed annually in the coal mines of the United States. There is no question that this number is at least double and probably treble what it should be and by all means the least excusable of the fatalities are those caused by explosions and fires. Fatalities from explo- sions and fires in coal mines are almost invariably caused by carelessness or negligence. Table 1 indicates that the fiscal year ending June 30, 1931, ras by no means a satisfactory one as regaris either the number of explosions or the number of persons killed by them. This tabulation lists all ignitions to which the attention of the personnel of the safety division was called and in- cludes not only major disasters, but also explosions in which fewer than five were killed, as well as several explosions from which no fatalities resulted. It will be noticed that last year there were 26 explosions in mines in 10 States of the United States, resulting in 217 deaths. In the previous year there were 34 explosions with a death list of 199, and in the year before there were 38 explosions with a death list of 139. Hence, the past fiscal year had distinctly a poorer record of fatalities from mine explosions than either of the two previous years. Of the 26 explosions in the past fiscal year, Pennsylvania had 7, West Virginic 4, New Mexico and Ohio 3 each, Alabama, Oklahoma and Washington 2 each, and California, Illinois and Indiana 1 each; the one in California was in a tunnel being driven for water purposes but giving off explosive gas (methane). In fatalities Ohio had the worst record with 38, Oklahoma came next with 45, then Indiane with 38, and Pennsylvania with 23; although Alabama had 2 ignitions and Washington 1, they caused no fatalities. Utch, Colorado, and Kentucky had no explosions reported by the safety division of the Bureau of Mines during the past fiscal year, but were on the list for the previous year, though in the case of Colorado there were no fatalities. On the other hand, Indiana and New Mexico, neither of rhich was charged with an explosion in the two previous years, were on the list for the past fiscal year; New Mexico had the bad record of three explosions, though fortunately with but a total of eight fatalities. Ohio reported 3 explosions to the safety division of the Bureau of Mines in the past fiscal year, 2 in the pre- vious year, and 3 in the year before that, or 8 in the past three fiscal years with 92 fatalities; all of these eight explosions were in open-light mines.

Synthetic seismograms of reflectivity method and some field records available are studied to detect the amplitude anomalies at the interface of the gaothermal reservoir the gas and/or oil boundary, and the underground tunnel. The first arrival of PO wave on the P-SV record are weak and emergent while those of P wave only rotated with respect to an incident angle are clear. This can, be explained by means of the energy loss of P-SV wave conversion. The primary reflections of P waves about depth fade away as compared to SH waves which do not perform any conversion, although they hold high attenuation in the fully saturated fluid layers. Reflection of comparable strength is present at the P-wave and S-wave... boundaries, but gas-saturated zones correlating with P wave bright spots do not show equivalent attenuation anomalies. Thus the comparative technique of P-SV wave and SI i wave records is very useful to indicate the strong amplitude anomalies at the boundaries of sealing targets.

EARLY this year the Board of Directors announced that, through the generous gift of past-president W. L. Saunders, a gold medal to be awarded for distinguished achievement in mining had been estab-lished. At the December meeting of the Board the medal committee reported that it recommended that the first medal be awarded to David William Brunton for "development and exposition of the principles and prac-tice of ore sampling; for systematic daily mapping of mine geology; for the Brunton mining compass; and for engineering achievements in connection with great tunnels." The formal presentation of the medal will be at the din-ner, on Feb. 16, in connec-tion with the annual meet-ing. Mr. Brunton, like several other prominent Institute members, was born in Can-ada, and came to the United States when he was twenty-four years old. He had then been in civil en-gineering work for three years and after a year more of it, deciding that mining was more attrac-tive he spent two years at the University of Michigan doing advanced work in geology a n d chemistry. His first mining engage-ment was with the Dakota and San Juan Mining Co., at Mineral Point, Ouray County, Colo. That was in June, 1875, and the young engineer had to travel 230 miles by trail from the then nearest railroad station at Pueblo. Having to come out because the company did not get in enough supplies to last through the winter he became metallurgist for the Hunt, Douglas & Stewart Co., at Georgetown, Colo. When the Hunt and Douglas plant proved a success, H. A. Taylor, the father of Mr. Brunton's later partner, Frank M. Taylor, engaged him to build the Clear Creek Reduction Works. Eighteen months later he built the Native Silver Mining Co. mill at Caribou and a year later a mill at Silver Peak, Nev., that was so successful that the principal owner shut it down to freeze out the minority stockholders. The winter of 1879 found him at Leadville where he did engineering work for the Robert E. Lee, Duncan, Wolftone, A. Y. & Minnie, and Dinero mines, eventually becoming manager of the Colonel Sellers. In 1886 he was called in on apex-side-line litigation at Aspen with the result that he went there to develop the mines for economic and legal pur-poses, and later became the manager of three of them.
