These mines, which belong to the Burma Corporation, Ltd., formerly a London company now incorporated in Rangoon, Burma, are situated in the semi-independent state of Tawng-Peng, one of the small divisions comprising the northern Shan states and erroneously known as part of Upper Burma. Bawdwin is approximately 23' 6' N. latitude and 97" 20' E. longitude, 450 miles north of Rangoon, 169 miles northcast of Mandalay and 50 miles south and west of the Province of Yunnan, China (see Fig. 1). Although the mines were worked by the Chinese during the Ming Dynasty, 1412 A. D., the most extensive operations took place between 1796 and 1851, when the mines contributed largely to the silver market of China. During the reign of Tung Chik, 1868 A. D., they were abandoned partly because of the Mohammedan rebellion in Yunnan, which made life and property insecure, but largely because of the difficulty of operating the mines on account of water and poor ventilation. Since that time practically nothing was done, although the Burmese kings are said to have made several sporadic attempts to work the mines, until 1891 when Europeans were attracted by the great slag dumps (assaying about 40 per cent. lead) which the Chinese had left after extracting the silver. After a railroad and smelter had been built and 200,000 to 300,000 tons of slag smelted for lead, exploration work was started and old workings cleaned out in order to locate the remnants of the orebody that it was supposed the Chinese had left. After two years of most discouraging work, the remains of a large orebody was discovered by the Dead Chinaman Tunnel or what is the 171-ft., or No. 2 level adit. "During the past century, the development of vehicular transportation has benefitted tremendously from the performance improvement in engines in a situation where low-cost, plentiful fuel supplies were the order of the day. Engine advances were enhanced by and also dictated fuel modification to better adapt the energy source to the power plant.In discussing the several aspects of the change in approach from ""an engine and its fuel to a fuel and its engine"", the authors touch on the following areas:1. Description of an engine concept that provides the needed flexibility in fuel appetite at good efficiency to cope with future requirement s.2. The constraints placed on liquid fuel resource energy utilization efficiency by special engine-required fuel properties and the fuel efficiency of the various engine types available.3. Future vehicle engine fuel sources. This review will put into perspective the problem associated with the net energy available from future fuel sources under extensive research and development at present.4. A brief review of test data to show that fuel-tolerant and fuel-efficient engines are viable and that, in a fuel-resource-limited future, they can be a ""light at the end of the tunnel.""The Texaco Controlled Combustion System (TCCS)The TCCS is a unique means for stratified charge operation of an internal combustion engine in such a manner as to eliminate the requirement for octane or cetane number specification for the fuel. Octane rating is an empirical engine test method that evaluates a gasoline's resistance to spontaneous ignition or ""knock."" Cetane is based on a different engine test, which determines a diesel fuel's ease of spontaneous ignition . High cetane number enhances cold starting and permits high-speed diesel engine operation. As one would expect, the fuels in current use cover a band when the two values, octane and cetane, are plotted against each other."

Industrial production of titanium occurs via the batch-wise reduction of titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) with a reducing metal, being magnesium in the Kroll process, or sodium in the Hunter process. In the search for low cost titanium, the CSIR is developing a continuous process to produce titanium powder directly via metallothermic reduction of TiCl4 in molten salt, dubbed the CSIR-Ti process. The move to a continuous process has been attempted by a number of organizations, but was until now always met with failure, due in no small part to challenges inherent in the process chemistry. The reaction between TiCl4 and the reducing metal can occur directly, when TiCl4 or any titanium sub-chlorides present, comes into contact with suspended or dissolved reducing metal. The reaction can also occur indirectly, without any physical contact between the reacting species, via an electronically mediated mechanism. The reaction mechanism via electronic mediation can cause TiCl4 to react at the outlet of the feed port, rapidly causing blockages of the TiCl4 feed line. The electrical conductivity of the metal reactor can also cause the electronically mediated reaction to favour the formation of titanium sponge on the reactor walls and internals, rather than titanium powder. Various methods were investigated to overcome the problem of blockages in the TiCl4 feed line, e.g. mechanical removal, sonic velocities, dilution of the TiCl4 and the use of ceramic feed lines. This article discusses problems experienced with the continuous feeding of reagents, and various methods attempted are shown and discussed. Information is also given on the morphology, chemical composition and suitability of the final titanium powder for powder metallurgical application as presently produced by the CSIR-Ti process. The Pasminco mine at Rosebery in north western Tasmania is a medium sized underground base and precious metals mine. In April 1992 a major wedge failure of approximately 5000 t occurred in the backs of a main access drive to the 18 level H Lens orebody. This collapse prevented access to 190 000 t of ore which had been scheduled for production in July - August 1992. At the time of the collapse, the mine was in a transition period between mining small pillar remnants of several other orebodies and developing to the new deeper J Lens orebody.The development at this orebody was behind schedule and it was necessary to find a cost-effective and timely alternative to a 75 m bypass drive around the fall area.A Lysaght- Fletcher multiplate steel arch was available on-site from a deferred surface road project and it was decided to use this arch to regain access through the fall area. Due to the danger of continued minor falls, the entire 18 m long, 3.95 m high x 4.5 m wide tunnel had to be assembled in the 4.7 m wide x 5 m high accesss drive and pushed into the fall area as a single unit.

Progress on this project will be verbally reported and a description given of the main features. A detailed feasibility study was completed in December 1986, and the Joint Venture has issued an Environmental Impact Statement. This was open for public comment until 16 February. Issues presently being considered include economic justification traffic, air quality, noise, marine fauna and flora, visual impact, heritage and construction impact. Detail design and construction is likely to commence in mid 1987, following determination of the above matters.

Explosives, originally used only in fireworks and warfare, became legitimate contributors to human progress when miners in Eastern Europe began using them to break rock in the early 1600%. Since that time these powerful materials have had a dual role in the world: as agents of destruction in war, and as irreplaceable tools necessary to advance civilization. In the latter role, they serve as agents to enable mankind to produce metals, build roads, and drive tunnels. In other words, to provide those materials, services, and infrastructure without which the modern world could not exist.

This paper Donald describes how New Jersey Zinc Co. made surveys for a connection between the Ivanhoe and Van Mater shafts at Austinville, Va. Except to say that the two faces had to meet "accurately" on line and grade, Donald does not indicate the required precision. Assuming that there were 24 angles in the 1 ½ -mile traverse and 15 in the one-mile traverse, it can be shown that if the average error in plumbing each shaft was ±30" and the average error in measuring each traverse angle was ±10", then the average error at the point of connection would have been about ±1.9 ft normal to the line between the shafts. This calculation assumes that any errors in the triangulation would be negligible compared with the errors in the plumbings and traverses, and it also neglects taping errors. With no constant errors or blunders, the latter would be important only in lines normal to the line between the shafts.

Effect of lateral loading against existing sheet pile wall and distribution of gravity loading due to various number of construction loading scenarios were studied. The objective of this effort was to determine the loading case that permits the contractor to utilize a 400 ton crane at the specified location with the existing limitation imposed on site. Staged analysis was determined as the methodology that will more accurately predict the exiting and additional stress due to the impose crane loading. A reliable and robust analysis (ANSYS) software was used to complete both 2D and 3D finite element model and analysis. Analysis model parameters such as material properties, non-linear behavior of the soil, and meshing are presented and discussed. At the conclusion specific range of crane operation and pick weights operating on existing concrete mat supported on top of an existing tunnel was reviewed and deemed acceptable.

INTRODUCTION The inelastic stress-strain behavior of rocks has urged engineers to seek for the possible application of plasticity to engineering pro¬jects such as tunnels, oil wells, dams, etc. for a long time. Early efforts in this direction have tentatively used the classical theories to solve some axisymmetric problems, in which the rocks were treated as perfectly plastic and nonfrictional materials (Talobre, J. A., 1957). Meanwhile, one of the fundamental assumptions is that the volume strain of elastoplastic material is purely elastic. Drucker and Prager (1952) developed a perfectly plastic and frictional model with a generalized form of Mohr-Coulomb law, which serves as both failure criterion and yield criterion. Although the associated flow rule gives unacceptably large dilatancy, this model is a very important step to deal with the frictional behavior of geological materials. As a further step, Roscoe et al (1963) and Schofield and Wroth (1968) proposed a Cam-clay model, which accounts for the yielding before the material reaches a failure envelope and reflects the plastic volume strain as a strain hardening factor, and the open end of the Drucker-Prager envelope is capped by a family of yield surfaces, the envelope is made conforming with crit¬ical void ratio line. The proposed shapes of the cap have been based on experimental data and on convenience of mathematical descrip¬tions. Drucker, Gibson and Henkel (1957) introduced a spherical cap for soils, while in Cam-clay model the cap is semi-logarithmic yield function derived from the result of triaxial tests. DiMaggio and Sandler (1971) proposed an elliptical model for sand, in which the hardening function depends exponentially on plastic strain. Sandler et al (1976) used a plane cap model to express the behavior of a wide range of geological materials of which the nonlinear hysteretic nature is significant. Mizuno and Chen (1982) illustrated the physical mean¬ing of cap models and their adaption to finite element calculation. In recent years, Carroll et al (1972, 1980) have studied the com¬paction of porous materials under hydrostatic pressure and discussed the mechanism of the nonlinear response thoroughly. Analytical and numerical analysis of the hollow sphere model by Curran and Carroll (1979) predicted an initial yielding surface, dependent on the initial porosity, and showed a strong coupling between hydrostatic and deviatoric effects. All these main features from the abovementioned theoretical research are visualized by the experimental data on Boise sandstone (1984). The combination of such previous work would be logically the construction of a plasticity model for porous rocks which, following the tradition of assigning the name of birthplace to a special model, is called Cal-Rock model (Carrol, M. M., 1984). The results of triaxial tests along different loading paths reveal the compaction characteristics for deviatoric and hydrostatic stress separately. the fitting of the nonlinear stress-strain curves leads to a construction of yield surfaces. Moreover, an uniaxial strain test gives the strength envelope which is the critical state line. The whole model is composed in the frame of elasticity theory. The concept and representation of plasticity used here are in the spirit of Naghdi¬Casey theory (Casey and Naghdi, 1984 and 1984, Naghdi and Trapp, 1975). In order to find the way of using such a plasticity model in engineering problems, the stress field in a thick-walled cylinder of porous material is calculated. This is an axisymmetrical problem with plane strain, which is an idealization of oil well in an infinite medium. Because the constitutive relation is highly nonlinear, a numerical method has been utilized to obtain the solution. CONSTRUCTION OF CAL-ROCK MODEL (1). Elastic-plastic constitutive equations The basic assumption is that the yield surface in stress space depends on one parameter, namely the plastic volume strain, as the data on Boise sandstone suggested. Starting from this point, the theory formulated in stress space and in strain space by Naghdi and his co-workers (1975, 1981) can be simplified. The simplified yield function is

The conditions that govern the selection of a suitable type of detachable bit for the small, isolated mine, for rock work and tunnel contracting and for the large mine are quite dissimilar, therefore intelligent recommendation of a particular make of detachable bit must involve consideration of many factors. Small, isolated mines may find advantageous a detachable bit that a larger mine cannot afford to use, because of more efficient conventional steel sharpening and steel-distribution practice, but a small mine may not be able to adopt the practice of large mines because of necessary capital expenditures for equipment for detachable-bit sharpening and . shanking. The perfect detachable bit, suitable for all conditions, has not yet been developed. Conventional Drill Bit in Use That drilling speed increases as the bit gauge decreases is well known, but since small-hole drilling is the exception rather than the rule the rate of such increase is probably not so generally recognized. Tests carried out by Holman Brothers Limited1 with 7/8-in. steel show that when bit sizes are reduced from I½ in., I3/8 in., and I3/16 in-; to I3/8 in., I1/4 in.., and I1/8 in., respectively, the volume of the hole is I 5 per cent less and the drilling speed 49 per cent higher. Recent tests by the United States Bureau of Mines2,3 in hard, uniform basalt showed that a reduction in average gauge from 2.077 to I,826 in., a difference of o.25I in., gave an increased drilling speed of 65 per cent. The limits to which a drill hole may be extended depend upon the loss in gauge. Since the conventional bit with 5° and 14° clearances did not possess sufficient reaming edge to permit the smaller gauge changes that were required for small-hole drilling, experiments were made in bit construction with a view to correcting this deficiency. This resulted in the adoption of the full reaming cross bit (having full Carr charac1erist.i~~) by some mines4 In order to drill holes having a minimum taper from the collar to the bottom of the hole, full reaming center-hole cross bits with 90° cutting angles, 5° and 14° wing tapers, forged on 7/8-in. quarter-octagon drill rods, are used in the conventional drill-steel practice at Hollinger. In the steel shop close attention is given to the condition of the dies and dollies, which, combined with a rigid inspection of the finished bit, ensures as nearly a perfect bit as call be forged economically. Early in the present century, prospect-ing was active in the area of the present Miami district. There were plenty of blue and green copper outcroppings, but very little ore of a grade that would stand shipping costs had been uncovered. Late in the first decade of the century, tunnels were driven into the north and south slopes of the Inspiration ridge, and two of them exposed disseminated copper sulphide ore. This was the original discovery of such ore on the ground of what eventually became the Inspiration Division of the consolidated company. By 1910 exploration of the ground area was well along and by 1911 underground development had been started. In the next few years a large tonnage of disseminated copper ore had been proven— sufficient to justify the expenditure of several million dollars in mine development and for mine equipment plus large sums for treatment plants. The mine and treatment plants were placed in production July 1, 1915. To Jan. I, 1945, there had been produced from the mines of the Inspiration Consoli-dated Copper Co., more than 106,000,000 tons of ore. Nearly all of this tonnage had been recovered by block caving. GeologIcal and EconomIc FActors Block caving is a mining system based on the fact that if a mass of rock has a sufficient number of fractures and planes of weakness the mass will disintegrate if the support of an area of sufficient size is taken away—that is, "undercut." If the material that caves away from the bottom of a block is drawn off the spalling is progressive. There is a limit to the speed of this spalling or caving action, which varies with the structure of the rock being caved. If the rock is drawn at a rate faster than the caving rate, and if this drawing is continued too long, a void may be created that could make a very dangerous condition if the area should drop as a block and force the air below the uncaved rock out through the raises and drifts. This can be a very destructive force. On the other hand, if the broken material is not drawn fast enough the swell of the material in place to broken material would pack the mass until it was almost solid again and could not be drawn without much blasting, or perhaps even partially undercutting again. Geologically therefore it would seem that any rock with seams and fractures would cave; but for block caving there should be enough seams and fractures in a limited area so that such an area will cave and produce a product that can be drawn safely, rapidly enough and at a cost justified by the value of the product being drawn. At the Inspiration the disseminated ores occur in two formations, the Pinal schist and the Schultze granite. There is no material difference in the grade of the ore formed in the schist and in the granite. The chief copper minerals are chalcocite, malachite, azurite and chrysocolla. Other copper minerals occur in limited quantity.

The art of predicting rock excavating machine performance has become increasingly detailed and refined. Researchers using laboratory experiments and machine manufacturers using field observations have identified and defined mechanisms of failure, rock and tool interaction, and relevant design principles affecting them. Concurrently, practitioners have developed index tests which reflect rock properties relevant to machine performance. Empirical relationships between index properties and machine performance (penetration rate, cutter consumption, and machine utilization) have been established from past experience and are currently used throughout the industry. Contractors have used such relationships for estimating throughout the world. The detail in which geological, geotechnical, test, and project data, empirical relationships, and construction experience are utilized, is limited by time constraints imposed by the bidding period. To fully utilize all available data, methods of analysis, and construction experience, a simple computer program was developed for a microcomputer costing less than $7500. As a result, 1. machine performance predictions are detailed & reliable, 2. construction alternatives may be examined, 3. anticipated conditions & performance are graphically, documented & easily comparable to those encountered, and 4. results include a listing of assumptions & results of performance analyses & a graphic performance summary.

An analysis of the interaction between a creeping rock and a yieldable lining is presented. The following cases are considered: an elastic lining, a lining made of circular shaft rings that may slide at their joints, a lining made of circular reinforced concrete panels with wooden compressible strips inserted between the longitudinal joints and a yieldable support that has a compressible broken-rock stratum between the support and plane rock. By formulating a mathematical model for the rock-lining interaction, one can optimize the sequence of excavation-lining application. To keep costs to a minimum, one can also choose the most appropriate lining for the corresponding rheological properties of the rock.

THE dimensions and shapes of mine structures may at present be determined by (1) field experience, (2) structural calculations, and (3) barodynamic tests.§ None of these, however, provide information as to the stresses, their direction and distribution in a mine structure. For the design of pillars, the placing of openings relative to working places such as gangways, haulage levels, etc., this information is desirable. Photoelastic methods provide this and, while relatively new, their application in all engineering fields is assuming increasing importance. This paper, therefore, will present the method with a few applications to mining, and with sufficient reference for further study by the reader. PART I THE PHOTOELASTIC METHOD The photoelastic method of stress measurement determines the stress distribution in a two-dimensional model by optical means. INTRODUCTION Friction Rock Stabilizers, commonly called Split Sets,tm* have been under development since early 1973. Five years of intensive laboratory and field testing led to their introduction to the metal mines in the United States in the fall of 1976. Actual sales started in February of 1977 and, to date, over five million units have been marketed to metal mines. "A representative composite fault-related landslide of the Corinth Gulf graben named “Panagopoula” is reported that considered to be one of the most prone to slope instability sites along the main motorway and railway connecting Athens with the city of Patras. The presence of tectonically highly sheared and weathered geological formations, including Alpine basement (mainly flysch) contributes to the site instability, triggered/reactivated by seismic activity and heavy rainfalls. Although a series of remedial measures have been already constructed, the inclinometer readings during the last twenty years time period show a continuous very slow movement which indicates that the landslide is still ""active"". This fact has resulted to divert the axes of the new motorway and railway through twin tunnels which are under construction. INTRODUCTIONThe spatial and temporal evolution of landslides in the case of structurally complex slopes is lithologically and often structurally controlled while their type and frequency are mainly related to tectonic and lithological anisotropy (Baron et al. 2005; Hradecky et al. 2007). The triggering mechanisms mainly include: (a) excessive rainfall generating high pore pressure and (b) strong earthquakes resulting in dynamic loading conditions at the failure surface. Data such as past earthquakes or the precipitation records are useful to be gathered when a landslide model is examined since they could act as a landslide triggering mechanism. Recording of the movement through surface and inclinometer measurements as well as combination of the above information with historical records of failure could lead to a more accurate estimation of the location of the failure surface and understanding of the landslide mechanism.Slope instability in the southern segment of the Gulf of Corinth, Northern Peloponnesus, Greece, is ubiquitous and ranges from deep-seated bedrock failure to secondary earth flows in recent deposits. In this part of Greece, the periodically induced landslide events triggered by heavy rainfall, earthquake and anthropogenic activity are closely related to active fault tectonics. The Gulf of Corinth is considered as a typical example of a relatively simple asymmetric half-graben with major border faults to the south and a flexure of the northern shore. Panagopoula landslide is located along the trace of a WNW trending normal fault (dipping northwards) (Figure 1). The area is considered to be one of those most prone to slope instability along the E95 motorway and railway connecting Athens with the city of Patras."

Marketing is the linchpin of the industrial-mineral (IM) industry. Without markets and consumers for IM products, all other associated IM activities are superfluous. The simple existence of an IM deposit does not mean that it can be exploited. A dynamic interaction between exploration (geology), mining, processing, transport, marketing, sales, and consumers is required for profits. Geology dictates the existence of a deposit, but markets dictate its development, and transportation provides the connection. This is true to such an extent that marketing commonly is called the exploration phase of IMs. Marketing is strategic and includes long-range market-development and planning activities, whereas selling is tactical and more focused on day-to-day consumer interactions. Each will help the other when properly done. Many producers of IMs have failed because of inadequate marketing skill, information, and practice. Over many years at the Montana Bureau of Mines, the many developers seeking technical assistance to find an IM deposit, but who had no marketing plan, always failed. In contrast, the few who sought assistance first on marketing, with the IM deposit to be found later, always succeeded (Richard Berg, personal communication, 1998). Marketing has many facets helped by geologists who must be aware of what marketing is attempting to do. A geologist needs to understand many aspects of IMs: location (deposits, plants, consumers), processing (specifications), transportation (truck, rail, barge, ship), competition (local, regional, national, international), substitutes, pricing, and new developments and market forces of all kinds. Some needed skills are not taught formally to geologists, so well-rounded self-education and on-the-job training are the way a geologist normally enters into IM marketing. The IM geologist generally is associated with marketing either by helping to prepare a market study or by acting on the results of one. Preparing a market study is a two-part process. The first part is relatively simple but requires a time-consuming collation of data into an IM survey (mostly past-and present-oriented). The more difficult and much more important second part entails expanding the IM survey into a market evaluation (mainly future-oriented) that emphasizes forecasting, timing, location, and specific products. A market evaluation generally boils down to formulating the right questions to ask of the right persons. One very good question to ask is, "What could be the market for this specific IM?" while thinking for yourself without excessive recourse to gossip, rumors, promoters, developers, or (at times) IM experts. The evaluation must prove that market potential exists and suggests a marketing plan. Effective marketing is an ongoing process, with the initial marketing plan modified over time, using wide and continuous input to avoid tunnel vision. Industrial-mineral markets are based either on commodity (lower-priced, basic-processing) minerals or specialty (higher-priced, value-added) minerals. IM marketing methods are either product-driven (commodity minerals), a more traditional approach, or market-driven (specialty minerals), but these are neither mutually exclusive nor is one always better than the other. Focusing too much on specialty minerals can lead to problems. A blend of commodity products with specialty products commonly lowers risk and enhances long-term profits. The highest profits occur in specialty minerals at the cost of higher risk and complexity and require intelligent marketing, versatile technical services, and creative research and development. Industrial minerals are best served by an industrial-marketing approach rather than a consumer approach. Modern industrial marketing emphasizes the consumer using the "marketing concept." The marketing concept focuses all management and operational activities on total consumer management and satisfaction similar to the total quality management approaches to excellence.
