"The Tooele plant is situated at the mouth of Pine Canyon, five miles northeast of Tooele City. The site forms one terminus of the Tooele Valley railway, which runs southwest through Tooele City to Warner, a station on the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad, thirty-five miles southwest of Salt Lake City.An aerial tramway, four miles in length, crosses the Oquirrh Mountains and connects the plant with the Bingham district.The plant consists of a lead-zinc flotation concentrator, lead smelter and copper smelter.SAMPLING MILL The mill is a standard Taylor and Brunton sampling mill, built in two sections, each with a capacity of 100 tons per hour. The building is of steel and concrete, 40x84 feet. A well-equipped pulping, sampling and drying room is attached.All ore is sampled here and then distributed by conveyors to cencentrator, lead smelter and copper smelter bins.CONCENTRATOR This flotation mill is arranged in two units of 500 tons capacity each, one equipped with Callow pneumatic flotation cells, the other with Mineral Separation sub-aeration machines.The feed is maintained as uniform as possible by bedding, after coarse crushing at the sampling mill. REDUCED activity of mining, because of the business recession, had the effect of lowering working time, hence of reducing exposure to accidents, so it is probable that 1938 will be found to have had a lesser number (both fatal and nonfatal) though the accident rate may remain about the same as in 1936 and 1937. During periods of re-employment, such as occurred during 1936, 1937, and 1938, the new men entering the industry are less experienced and not as well trained in accident prevention as are the older, more experienced men and are frequently subject to more accidents. This situation should tend to correct itself as the new employees be- come better trained.

ERLE VICTOR DAVELER, who in his application for membership in the Institute in 1909 modestly described himself as "millman," was born at Denver in 1885 and graduated from the University of California in 1907. After a few months' work at gold mills in California he went to Tonopah, where for the next two years he had a varied experience working on pumps, convey- ors, tube-mills and filters. For the following two years he was experimental foreman and metallurgical engineer for the Utah Copper Co. at Garfield. He was sent in 1911 to be assistant superintendent of mills at the Ray. From 1913 to 1917 he was mill superintendent at the striking but unsuccessful experiment in large-scale low-grade gold mining of the Alaska Gold Mines Co.

THE present Hecla Co. is a Washington corporation; the Hecla Co. of Idaho was the old company. The older corporation owned two claims, the Hecla and the Katie May, and was incorporated for 500,000 shares of one dollar par value. The principal shareholders and officials of the older company were among the early mining men of the camp. Among the active officials were John A. Finch and A. B. Campbell. Among the directors and share- holders were Patrick Clark, J. R. Smith, Frank Upman, F. J, Kipp, Chas. Kipp, B. A. Kipp and Carl Landsee. F. J. Kipp and Carl Landsee are now directors of the Company. All of the others mentioned have died, but the surviving members of their families retain their ownership in the Company's shareholders. B. A. ,Kipp, who recently died, was the largest shareholder at the time of incorporation and Patrick Clark was the second largest shareholder. B. A. Kipp is a brother 'of F. J. Kipp, director of the Company.

TO operate the bituminous coal industry in the United States in 1929 cost $770,237,000, of which $30,739,000 was paid for purchased power and $34,947,000 for new machinery and equipment. Equipment aggregated 3,124,000 hp. A mining industry that spends $65,000,000 a year for power and machinery is likely to be fairly well mechanized, and when the machinery in use takes three million horsepower to drive it, the probabilities are that mechanization has been in progress in at least some of the mines for quite a few years. Mechanization in its broadest sense implies machine cutting, power drilling, mechanical loading, electric haulage, mechanical sizing and cleaning, and lesser applications of machinery to mining operations. But the introduction and development of mechanical loading has been the feature of coal mining recently and its extraordinary progress is causing great changes within the industry. VANADIUM is generally spoken of as a rare element; but, even in the light of our resources as known a couple of years ago, this description could be accepted in a qualified sense only. In fact, vanadium is very widely distributed, being a constituent of most clays, while even caustic soda has been shown to contain almost regularly a minute proportion of it, although the quantity in each case is so small as to render impracticable the extraction of the metal there from with profit. The opening-up of a large deposit of vanadium sulphide ore in South America has put a new phase on the commercial outlook of vanadium, the technical value of which for the improvement of steel has been proved by rigorous scientific investigation.

PRIOR to 1912 the only rail outlets for a large part of the coal regions of Carbon and Emery Counties. Utah, were over single-track lines of the Southern Utah R.R. and Castle Valley Ry. Companies, forming a route extending from Mohrland and Hiawatha, Utah, to a point of connection at Price, Utah, with what is now The Denver and Rio Grande Western R.R. Co. These two tap lines were poorly and inadequately constructed, with impracticable grades, lacking in equipment, and incapable of being put into condition to serve this region and handle the output of the mines, to say nothing of making possible increased production and new development. Any plans for the new development and increased output necessarily involved new and adequate railroad service. It was essential, not only that additional facilities be provided but that these facilities be in the form of an efficient and up-to-date railroad providing an independent through operation from the coal mines to a point of direct connection with the lines over which the product would be distributed to consumers. THE most successful and largest meeting of the Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E. was held this year. Great praise is due Mrs. Arthur S. Dwight, the acting chairman of the Ladies' Committee in the ab-sence of Mrs. Barron, and the other members of her committee for the able way in which they planned and carried out a varied and interesting program. Miss Margaret Callow, chairman of the Junior Committee, with her co-workers, made the days delightful for the Junior members, as well as visiting daughters. Under the leadership of Mrs. Jenkins, the registration of the ladies proceeded smoothly Monday morning. At the Mrs. Jenkins became ill with pneumonia on the second day of the meeting and was taken from the dinner to a hospital where she died the following Sunday. Born in Kansas City fifty years ago, she was an active and valued member of the Auxiliary in which she had long represented the Puget Sound Section. Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins, the latter treasurer of the Utah Consolidated Copper Co., had previously lived at McGill, Nev., where they are well known. She leaves a son and a daughter. luncheon on the fifth floor, Mrs. DeGolyer and Mrs. Church arranged a delightful hour, when greeting visit-ing friends proved more. interesting than food. Mrs. Bain efficiently ushered the ladies through the after-noon's program, seeing that they all found the buses on time. The first stop was at the Cloisters, where the quaint carvings and the faint odor of incense trans-ported all the visitors to the Middle Ages. That atmos-phere still clung, as we all looked at the marvelous collection of old Chinese jade, at the Metropolitan Museum, which was the next stop. The buses then took us to the MacDowell Club, where Mrs. Dwight gave a charming welcome, in the absence of the hostess, Mrs. Barron. The program, by Mr. and Mrs. Hardesty John¬son, was such a delight that repeated calls induced the artists to graciously respond with an encore. Then Mrs. Coster and Mrs. Sharpless assisted Mrs. Dwight in serving tea, about the glowing fireplace. In the evening the theater-goers guided by Mrs. Jordan were thrilled by "Interference.:" A detailed account of the annual meeting, in many ways the most interesting the Auxiliary has had, will be published later. This held the attention. of the mem-bers both morning and afternoon, on Tuesday. The absence of the President, Mrs. Barron, was much re-gretted, and the letter and the cablegram with her cor-dial greetings were much appreciated. Miss Stone ably presided in the place of Mrs. Barron, and graciously welcomed the incoming President, Mrs. Hoover. Her well-worded speech, accepting the office, was received with much enthusiasm. The visiting members were especially pleased with her description of herself as a "peripatetic-president." promising to visit the various sections as she crossed the continent on her frequent trips to California. An inspiring report was read from each section, and most particularly pleasing was a greet-ing brought by Mrs. Bateman of Toronto, from our sister organization in Canada. The sections are surely to be congratulated on their splendid work, not only for their own members, but also in sending clothing and other aids to the needy, as Mrs. Reynders directed, and in supporting libraries under the leadership of Mrs. Huntoon. The important work of the Educational Com-mittee, with its presentation of scholarships to various deserving young men, has been most efficiently carried on by Mrs. Jennings. Mrs. Jordan has inspired many to help in Braille, and Mrs. Eilers has extended the hos-pitality of the Auxiliary to many. The Washington Section is leading a movement to extend the privileges of Girl Scouting to the girls in lonely mining camps. The officers of the past year received flowers and grate-ful appreciation, and the incoming officers received a warm welcome. Very delightful features of the after-noon were the speech by the President of the A. I. M. E. for the coming year, Dr. George Otis Smith, and when a visiting member rose to say how much all the visiting members had enjoyed the Auxiliary's hospitality. The banquet and dance at the Waldorf were the most brilliant the Auxiliary has attended. Nearly twelve hundred were there to enjoy the festivity and to hear the speeches given, as Mr. Hoover and the other re-cipients accepted their medals and awards. The young people, the future supporters of the A. I. M. E. and the Auxiliary, enjoyed more hilarious tables in the bal-conies, and all enjoyed the dancing later.

INTRODUCTION Measurement of certain data associated with nuclear testing necessitates the reception of waves at the instrument location which are unaffected by reflection off internal structures or tunnel surfaces. Therefore, in order to provide necessary facilities for the fielding of experiments in support of the underground nuclear testing program, the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) commissioned a cost and feasibility evaluation pertaining to the design and construction of large underground cavities in Rainier Mesa. The effort included research into past experience pertaining to the excavation and support of large underground caverns, assessment of the geological conditions which exist in Rainier Mesa, preliminary design of the chambers and their rock support systems based upon the geological setting, development of mining plans for the excavation of the caverns, and estimation of the cost and manpower schedule to complete construction. This paper summarizes the results of the feasibility evaluation. The investigation was limited to modified hemispherical configurations ranging in size from 24.4 to 91.4 m (80 to 300 ft) in diameter. Two cavity support systems were considered. The first employs internally installed rockbolts as the means of primary rock support while the second involves the use of annular tendon galleries located above the chambers from which primary support members are introduced prior to general excavation. The internal support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 24.4, 36.6, 48.8, and 54.9 m (80, 120, 160, and 180 ft) while the external support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 54.9, 73.2, and 91.4 m (180, 240 and 300 ft).

In practice the advantages of high-quality hydrocyclone separation are often reduced due to varying feed suspension properties, solids concentrations and particle size distributions. Control systems of large hydrocyclones are usually fitted with controllable underflow nozzles, which is not practical for small hydrocyclone batteries. Therefore, a new control system for a battery of hydrocyclones with a nominal diameter of 150 mm was invented at the LUR in cooperation with AKW Apparate und Verfahren GmbH & Co. KG. This process was developed for bentonite slurry regeneration associated with tunnel excavation using bentonite slurry as a transport aid and lubricant.

This paper is aimed to confirm the possibility to excavate fractured rock masses by using EPB shields, even in presence of relevant water tables. This verification is based on laboratory test experiences carried out at TUSC laboratory of Politecnico di Torino, where the natural material is tested in order to verify the suitability of a certain conditioning technique in particular conditions. This is due to the fact that every case should be studied apart from existing studies on a certain rock type, as other factors such as fragmentation of the rock mass, natural water content and porosity of the rock can considerably influence the final result of the conditioning process. The most important aspects that allow to consider the conditioning of fractured rock masses as suitable are: possibility to create a plastic paste that can transmit the pressure at the front in a effective way; reduce the permeability of the spoil material in order to reduce the possibility of water leakage inside the chamber and eventually in the tunnel; verify the consistency of the conditioned material for the extraction through the screw conveyors and the belt conveyors. For this research an argillitic schistose rock mass, with some quartzitic and calcareous inclusions, has been studied by using different level of conditioning in order to verify the suitability of an eventual EPB excavation through this formation.

"One of the primary means of control of health hazards from respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres is through design and operation of mines to meet mine health and safety regulations and recommended practices. A U.S. National Academy of Sciences study concluded that for significant progress in coal mine dust control, research should be directed more toward obtaining fundamental understanding of the origin, transport and characteristics of respirable coal mine dust. Theoretical and experimental studies on transport of dust · in mine airways, particularly coordinated efforts to validate theory with practice, are scarce. Some empirical models, developed on the basis of experimental data, are available but these models cannot be applied to new conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of theoretical and experimental studies on the transport and deposition of dust in mine airways. This study is a part of an ongoing research project in the Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust.In the paper, the assumptions of the modeling phase of the project and the development of a convectiondiffusion equation for dust transport in mine airways are outlined. The important aspect of the modeling effort is the capture of the deposition phenomenon. The experiments performed under controlled conditions in a typical mine airway, as well as under normal mine operating conditions, are discussed. The comparison of the model predictions with experimental results are made to identify critical areas of agreements and deviations. The implications of the findings and areas for further research and development are presented."

"IntroductionThe Bienfait Mine is operated by Bienfait Coal Company Ltd., one of the Luscar Limited group of companies. Situated 5 km southeast of the town of Bienfait, Saskatchewan, it can produce 2.0 million tonnes of lignite annually in addition to 158,000 tonnes of char from a carbonization plant located on the property. Geology The economically mineable coal seams of the Estevan area are found in the Ravenscrag Formation. The lignite-bearing sands, silts and clays were deposited in Early Tertiary age, in an inland sea centred in the Williston Basin of North Dakota. The top of the Ravenscrag is an erosional surface, overlain by Tertiary or Quarternary sands and gravels or glacial till. The regional structure is a gently plunging syncline which dips to the southeast at about 0.3 degrees. There are minor undulations in the Bienfait area which are due to differential subsidence during deposition. Sporadic faulting is probably a result of glacial pressures, and preglacial and glacial channels are responsible for washout zones and the abrupt irregular subcrop found in the area. There are two economic coal seams in the Bienfait area, an uppe; seam locally known as the Roche Percee, and a lower seam, the Estevan. Both seams have been extensively mined since lignite mining began in the area in the late 1800s. The Roche Percee remains only in a small portion of the Bienfait Mine and comprises a very minor portion of the reserves. It averages 1.74 m thick under 8.1 m of overburden. The till rests on top of the Roche Percee and due to weathering the seam is generally of poorer quality. The Estevan seam comprises the majority of reserves at Bienfait. The main seam which is being worked on consists of an upper bench averaging 2.75 m, a carbonaceous parting of 0.21 m, and a lower bench of 0.92 m. Overburden depth above this seam varies from 21.0 m to 38.0 m."

"Three cases of surface subsidence investigated over abandoned coal mines after flooding in one case and dcwatering in two cases are presented in this paper. Mining was conducted by the room and- pillar method at all the mines leaving stable pillars. This paper will discuss the background chain of events and the likely causes of the pillar failure resulting in surface subsidence.CASE NO.1BackgroundThe Pittsburgh scam was mined in 1960 by the room-and- pillar method, leaving pillars (Figure I) through Mine A. located in Monongalia County. West Virginia.The mining height in U1is area was 1.83 m (6 ft) with an average mining depth of 140 m (460 ft). The mining recovery was 62% and the safety factor of the pillars was calculated at 1.15 using the Bieniawski ( 1984) fom1ula. For stable pillar design. a 1.5 safety factor is recommended. A 1.15 safety factor is considered marginal. Pumping continued after the mine was shut down in 1960 to prevent water seeping into an adjoining mine owned by the same company. The pumping ceased on December 12. 2003, and the mine was allowed to flood. The water level rose about 17 m (55 ft) by August 3 1, 2004, based on observations in a nearby borehole. On September 3, 2004 surface subsidence occurred above this area causing damage 10 a residence (Figure 2).Summary of InvestigationThe floor of the Pittsburgh coal scam played a strong role in the pillar failure. In this area, the immediate floor of the Pittsburgh seam consists of about two feet of fireclay. Extensive damage to the surface house was an indication that a major collapse below the surface had occurred. The pillars supporting the overlying strata were evaluated to find the cause of their failure. The pillars in the Pittsburgh seam (sec Figure I) had a marginal safety factor of 1.15 before flooding and were stable for 26 years. Once the mine was flooded the water level in the Pittsburgh seam rose by 17 m (55 ft). Shortly thereafter the fireclay in the floor weakened, resulting in several pillars punching into the floor unevenly making the immediate roof unstable. The overburden strata supported by these pillars also subsided do"" n into the mine, causing damage to several house on the surface."

THOSE familiar with the development of the Horne mine can readily appreciate that more and more accommodation bas been required for underground labour as the mine has grown. A permanent fire-proof change house, 30ft. by 75 ft., was built in 1927 to accommodate 194 men. This was extended ro 30 ft. by 92 ft. in 1928 to accommodate 296 men, and to 30ft. by 110 ft. in 1930 to accommodate 398 men. By 1933 this building was again overcrowded and tentative plans for a new change house were drawn up. However, it was realized that future operations would be centred around No. 4 shaft and a proposed new shaft, and the decision as to the location of the new change house had to be deferred until the area which seemed most suitable for the new shaft had been thoroughly explored underground. In the spring of 1934, the basic idea was accepted of drying the wet clothes in open mesh compartments or baskets located between rows of standard steel street-clothes lockers and built so that the covers or lids would serve as seats or benches.

"INTRODCICTIONSilicosis is the chronic fibrosing disease of the lungs caused by the inhalation of crystalline silica. However, inhalation of crystalline silica, may induce three distinctly different disease patterns; i.e., chrome silicosis, accelerated silicosis, and acute silicosis. These three disease patterns differ in their pathologic characteristics, clinical symptoms, onset of disease, and mortality. Many studies in the past have focused on the elucidation of mechanisms involved in the development of chrome silicosis. We recently reported that freshly fractured silica has surface properties that could make it more reactive with lung tissue than aged silica, and that this unique reactivity of freshly fractured silica may be involved in the pathogenesis of acute silicosis (Dalal et al., 1986; Vallyathan et al., 1988; Shi et II., 1988). Because freshly fractured silica could contain some moieties in an ""excited state,"" due to the breakage of silicon oxygen bonds, we postulated that the de-excitation of these moieties could produce light which could be monitored by a luminescence measurement technique. In addition, if this ""excited state'' of silica could trigger a greater biologic response by phagocytic cells, this activation could be monitored by a chemiluminescence technique in the presence of appropriate enhancers.This investigation describes for the first time the use of luminescence in the study of freshly fractured silica and its properties. Enhanced biologic reactivity of the freshly fractured silica with alveolar macrophages was monitored by the chemiluminescence technique.MATERIALS AND METHODSNative silica was obtained from the dust bank of the GenericRespirable Dust Technology Center, Pennsylvania State University, State College, PA, and ground for 3~ min in an agate ball mill. It was then sieved through a 20 micron mesh filter and used within 1 O min as fresh silica or stored in glass bottles for aging. X-ray energy spectrometry and X-ray powder diffraction studies on representative samples were made to confirm the mineralogic purity. All the silica samples were found to be 99 % pure with minimal detectable conlamination by metal ions."

The Bureau of Mines developed a new method for the determination of oxides of nitrogen in diesel exhaust gas. The procedure, a modification of the Saltzman method, uses a NO2 absorbent for the diesel exhaust gas; the colorless absorbent becomes purple on contact with N~. When used properly this procedure gives satisfactory results in 2 hours, whereas the standard phenoldisulfonic acid method required approximately 8 hours. The new method is not satisfactory for determination of oxides of nitrogen in the overrich fuel to air ratio range.
