The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests on samples of pozzolaniccement concrete to develop a low- strength backfill . Results show that support costs can be lowered by replacing a portion of the portland cement in mine backfill with pozzolan ( fly ash ) and lime . Unconfined compression tests on various ratios of fly ash to cement in 84 samples produced compressivestrength curves that can be used to estimate the best backfill mix for any mine .

GEOSCANs on belt analysers have been widely utilised in iron ore for nearly two decades. Since the first installations in 2003, the availability of accurate and reliable grade data has become standardised across iron ore mines in the Northern Cape, where various streams are monitored continuously to ensure the optimal functioning of plants. Assmang Khumani has been at the forefront of technology adoption and has implemented 19 GEOSCANs at various locations throughout the plant, monitoring run-of-mine, stockyard feed, beneficiation plant feeds, and products. Over the years, collaborative advances in the technology have allowed for numerous benefits and gains to be made. In recent times, there has been a concerted effort on the development of analysis for phosphorus in the material flows, and based on Scantech's experience in the phosphate industry, this element has now been calibrated to achieve statistically acceptable and repeatable accuracies for real time analysis of this element on many of Khumani's GEOSCAN analysers. This paper provides an overview of GEOSCAN use at Khumani, while focusing on the development of phosphorus analysis. A case study of analysis results is presented for a range of analysers that have been calibrated for this element, as well as a discussion on the benefits obtained as a result of this analysis. This paper presents the results of a study focussed on determining the distribution of cobalt in different types of pyrite of the La Estrella IOCG deposit in Chile. In the IOCG mineral deposits, where copper is the main product, the quantification and distribution of cobalt is required to correctly define the technical and economic viability of recovering cobalt as a by-product. In the La Estrella mineral deposit, seven alteration and mineralisation events were recognised through both optical and automated electronic mineralogical analysis. Of these seven events, five different types of pyrites were identified, each with unique characteristics of the pyrite crystals. Through advanced elemental analysis of these five types of pyrites, it was determined that the concentration and distribution of cobalt within the pyrite crystal is dependent on the mineralisation event. The results indicate high cobalt concentrations in the early pyrite mineralisation events, associated with relatively fine pyrite grains, and cobalt generally occurring in a solid form in the pyrite core. The late pyrite mineralisation event exhibits the lowest concentrations of cobalt, with cobalt predominantly present along the outer periphery of the pyrite. These results are relevant from a metallurgical point of view because the preferential location of cobalt within the pyrite crystal will influence the maximum metallurgical recovery of cobalt. For this, a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate must be formed which, according to the characteristics of pyrite, must be processed with the optimal solubilisation method. The overall objective is to ensure both good cobalt recovery and a high concentration of cobalt in the leach solution resulting from pyrite leaching. O processo de estampagem a quente também conhecido como press hardening, é um dos métodos mais utilizados atualmente pela indústria automobilística para produzir aços de alta e ultra alta resistência. Esse processo é principalmente usado em peças relacionadas à segurança passiva e à resistência ao impacto, tais como pára-choques e barras de proteção laterais. O uso desse processo aumenta a segurança dos passageiros e reduz o peço do veículo e, portanto, o consumo de combustível. No presente estudo, amostras de aço ao boro foram deformadas a quente, não isotermicamente, a 850ºC e 750ºC em 30% a uma taxa de 0,5s-1. As microestruturas obtidas após deformação a 850ºC foram quase totalmente martensíticas, diferente das amostras deformadas a 750ºC, onde houve uma diminuição da fração volumétrica de martensita e um aumento da fração volumétrica de ferrita. Portanto, a deformação aplicada a 750ºC resultou em uma diminuição dos valores de microdureza. Desta forma, tornou-se possível investigar a influência da deformação em alta temperatura na transformação martensítica, na fração volumétrica de ferrita e nos resultados de microdureza.

A previsão da fragmentação da rocha é essencial para otimizar a operação de desmonte de rochas. A fragmentação depende de muitos parâmetros, como propriedades estruturais e geomecânicas do maciço rochoso, geometria do plano de fogo das detonações e propriedades dos explosivos. Neste contexto, este trabalho objetivou realizar a previsão da fragmentação por simulação do desmonte de rochas da Mineração Megaípe considerando as características estruturais e geomecânicas inerentes à formação do maciço rochoso através da metodologia de Kuz-Ram. A metodologia consistiu no levantamento das propriedades geométricas das descontinuidades visíveis na face da bancada existente, realização da classificação geomecânica através dos sistemas Rock Mass Rating (RMR) e Q e aplicação dos resultados para predição da distribuição granulométrica da fragmentação. Obteve-se como resultado da simulação que cerca de 90% do material fragmentado deve passar na abertura do britador primário disponível na pedreira, além de resultados favoráveis quanto às análises de condições de estabilidade do talude operacional.

There are several methods (empirical, statistical, and machine learning tools) to calculate blast-induced ground vibration. Still, due to complications in the blasting procedure, under varying blasting loads and strata conditions, it is not easy to predict and simulate blast vibration precisely. Therefore, a study was conducted to simulate the field blast data in Ansys software using explicit dynamics. For this study, monitoring of ground vibration for 20 single hole blasts was carried out. The density of emulsion explosives was in the range of 0.9 to 1.15 g/cc. In the laboratory, rock properties were determined from the rock sample collected from the mine site before blasting. The in-hole velocity of detonation (VoD) and the density of the emulsion explosive were also determined. These parameters were used for numerical analysis to know the ground vibrations at specified points. The results of ground vibration predicted by the model are validated using field data.

The mining industry faces many difficult challenges, for example, lower ore grades, smaller and deeper deposits, and longer transportation distances. In the past, there have been remarkable innovations in both equipment and the types of mining methods for which it is used, which have resulted in economies of scale. This has led to an increased use of bulk mining methods, like sublevel and block caving, which has increased productivity and reduced costs. Haulage alone plays a major role. Current haulage techniques are a significant cost driver, which account for between 15 and 30% of the overall capital investment (capex) in a mine and are an increasingly part of the operating costs (opex). The paper introduces a simulation tool of main haulage system in underground mining. Therefore, performances and the costs of the three most common underground main haulage systems, rail, truck, and conveyor, are calculated using a developed modeling tool. The tool was applied and validated in a case study carried out with the LKAB Kiruna Mine in northern Sweden.

Featuring special heavy duty design and advanced torque monitoring system, these spindles replace existing competitors’ grease lubricated design with the efficient continuous oil lubricated solution to withstand the tough working conditions, increase life expectations and provide room for a product mix extension. The first couple of spindles have been installed in September 2017 by the expert Service team and are showing already good and reliable performance. Progressively all the others are being installed.

A geotechnical data management system has been developed to manage drillhole and mapping data generated from in house and consultant administered field programs. This system comprises a data collection interface with integrated validation, processing and reporting functionality. Development of the database required careful consideration of how and what geotechnical information is gathered in the field, a clear understanding of the interdependency of the parameters, and the outputs required to support geotechnical design.The acQuire Geoscientific Information Management System was selected as the preferred software to support the process because of its ability to easily manage data from capture in the field through to quality reviews and ultimately into reports. Initially only geotechnical logging of diamond core was considered, subsequently the system has been expanded to support additional geotechnical data sources such as laboratory test results, traverse and window mapping data. This paper focuses on the core logging data acquisition, validation, analysis and presentation of data.The acQuire Geoscientific Information Management System has proven to be a robust platform for the capture, interrogation, and reporting of geotechnical data. Data entry objects have been created to manage seven different areas of geotechnical data collection ranging from core logging to mapping to automated reports for falls of ground.

Mine workers in heavy and dangerous work are under several physical risk factors, for example temperature, humidity, noise, vibration, lighting and air velocity. Thermal comfort includes parameters such as air temperature, air humidity, air flow rate, radiant heat, metabolic rate and garment insulation. In this study, thermal comfort conditions were evaluated using thermal comfort indices defined as predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD) which were determined by measurements taken from an underground coal mine for approximately 100 days. Although the metabolic rate (light work) was kept at 2 met, it was found that predicted mean vote ranged between − 2.58 and 1.68. The predicted percentage dissatisfied index was found to reach 95%. According to the results, it can be seen that thermal comfort may have negative effects on occupational health and safety. The change in thermal comfort index values in the Soma Underground Coal Mine was investigated in detail and the reasons for the changes were determined. Furthermore, determining the optimal working environment for the mine workers was also an aim of this study.

Together with Sociedad Punta del Cobre S.A. (Pucobre) and Orica, we are carrying out a study of alternatives for methodology of excavation in Slot Up Raises from actually built with Blind Hole (BH) to drilling and blasting (DB) methodology. The study is part of the permanent search for innovation, the use of technology and the reduction of mine operation costs. This application aims to optimize the Sub Level Stoping method, which has historically been exploited at Pucobre. Using a new variant of the method “Open Stoping”, through the initial development of ascending blind raises using a pilot drilling of a bore hole, with the objective of eliminating the upper level in order to excavate the free face opening. This industrial test aims to replace the mechanized BH Up Raise of 1.5m (4.9 ft.) in diameter and 30m (98.4 ft.) high, with a Up Slot Raise considering two separate blasting events, using different technological enablers, as detailed below: accuracy drilling with relief holes of 254mm (10 in.) diameter, high viscosity bulk emulsion, wireless initiation system and high-strength injectable bulk resin. Considering the importance of the success of this application, a DB diagram was defined to allow the opening of the up raise in two blasting events, separated by intermediate stemming deck located at the same level at a height of 15m (49.2 ft.) from the collar, using high-strength injectable resin. The first blasting event considers the first section from the collar to the first 15m (49.2 ft.), using wired electronic initiation that is detonated on the first day. A second event blasts the section from 16.5 to 30m (54.1 to 98.4 ft.), using a wireless initiation system, as, it has no physical connection, is blasted on the second day after the extraction of the material resulting from the first event. For greater precision, the design of the explosive charge configuration and initiation sequence is made, adjusted to the measurements of trajectory deviations of the actual ground drilling and is also considered for the control of the explosive charge configuration with high viscosity bulk emulsion. This application improves the profitability of the mining business by generating savings through the change of Blind Hole methodology, estimating a savings of more than 75% per Up Slot Raise

After the recent increase in catastrophic failures of tailings dams such as the Burmadinho, Brazil failure in 2019, the mining industry has actively engaged in the stabilisation of tailings dams. Most of the tailings storage facility (TSF) guidelines suggest a laborious action that can be facilitated through imaging by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Although UAVs are not unknown to most mining operations, automated rill detection through aerial image processing is a new concept. This study utilises images from sites in the U.S. and employs semantic segmentation with a UNet architecture to detect location and size of these rills. The developed model can be used as a tool for monitoring surface erosion of TSFs.

Improvements in construction equipment and techniques in recent years have made possible the use of drilled shaft foundations in diameters and lengths not previously considered practical or feasible. Many highway bridge and other structures are now routinely founded on drilled shafts which -are 8 to 12 feet in diameter and extending over 200 feet in depth below grade. There are unique challenges associated with constructing such large and deep cast-In-place foundations and engineers should be aware of the special needs associated with site investigation, construction specifications, material requirements, and quality assurance. This paper outlines a number of special considerations for these foundations, along with strategies that may be employed to improve the reliability and quality of large drilled shaft foundations.

During the middle 1880's, shortly after the discovery of silver-lead ores in the Coeur d'Alene district of northern Idaho, it became apparent that concentration of the ores would be necessary to obtain a profitable product. Too much siliceous material was present for direct smelting, and the majority of the ores found at depth were too low in metallic content for economic smelting processes at the time. As the ores occurred in quartzite shear zones with siderite and quartz gangue, a large quantity of waste material was present in all the mines. As the galena was not finely disseminated, this made possible relatively good extraction of the argentiferous galena by coarse concentration. The first concentrators consisted mainly of coarse crushing, screening and jigging, principally by Harz jigs, the slimes being treated on buddles. Later Wilfley tables took the place of sand jigs and vanners superseded the buddles. Because of the marketing conditions, no attempt was made until 1900 to effect a recovery on the zinc minerals present, which were found associated in varying amounts with the galena. All through this period, the greater part of the production was obtained from mines containing ore assaying high in lead and low in zinc. Parts of some ore bodies would be reversed in this respect, so that ores high in zinc were left intact. During the decade after 1910, several important mines, The Success and The Interstate Callahan, containing ores high in zinc, were put into operation and were a material aid in the needed zinc production during World War I. Gravity concentration by jigs and tables was used during this period, with bulk flotation increasing in popularity for the treatment of the fine material that had already been treated by ordinary slime concentrating machinery. No extra fine grinding for flotation concentration was thought profitable at the time. Tailings Discharged into Streams From the start of mining and milling operations in this district until 1904, no attempt was made by the various mills in the upper district to impound or stack their tailings. They discharged them directly into the adjacent creeks or streams, to be carried away by high water. The Bunker Hill and Sullivan and the Last Chance mines, both in the relatively flat valley of the district, stacked huge piles of the coarse jig tailings on the near-by river bottom. Rain and snowfall are heavy in the Coeur d'Alene district, as it is on the heavily timbered Pacific slope of the Bitter Root Mountains. If there is a single key to managing a mineral extraction company, it is the control of productivity. American labor costs, in general, tend to be in the range of 10%-15% of total costs. American coal mining labor costs, however, exhibit ranges of 30%-60% of total costs. Is it any wonder that the industry finds itself at a competitive disadvantage? When labor costs take as much as sixty cents of every dollar of revenue, there is little room for profitability. The American coal mining industry must set as a long range goal the reduction of labor costs to the 10%-15% range of total costs in order to be competitive.

En plus, on traitera de l'importance dans une telle situation d'une organisation efficace dans la gestion des services et de l'opération (atelier, concasseur, entrepôt, etc.).IntroductionSidbec-Normines Inc . a entrepris l'exploitation minière du gisement de Fire Lake, le 1er janvier 1977. Le but de l'entreprise est de produire annuellement six millions (6 000 000) de tonnes de concentré d'hématite (oxide de fer) titrant 66% Fe au concentrateur de Lac-Jeannine a partir d'un minerai d'une teneur moyenne de 33% Fe, extrait de la mine de Fire Lake. Ce concentré est ensuite achemine à Port-Cartier et alimente I'usine de bouletage.Les installations minières de Sidbec-Normines sont situées a trois endroits différents : la mine à Fire Lake, le concentrateur à Lac-Jeannine et l'usine de bouletage à Port-Cartier. La mine de Fire Lake se situe à 83 km de la ville de Gagnon et à 100 km du concentrateur de Lac-Jeannine. Une route provinciale relie la ville à la mine et au concentrateur. Le minerai est acheminé de la mine au concentrateur par chemin de fer et le concentré est transporté par train sur une distance de 309 km à l'usine de bouletage de Port-Cartier."

An intensive safety campaign at Mount Isa Mines Limited from 1956 to 1966 saw the lost time accident frequency rate fall to half its original level. A review of the safety programme was carried out in 1967 and in 1968 the Five Point Safety System was introduced. The seven years since its introduction have been years of significant achievement both in production and safety. Improving safety is a fundamental part of Mount Isa Mines Limited's policy and this system has been a major tool in implementing that policy. To be successful personnel need to be prepared and trained for its introduction and subsequently counselled on its use. A carefully prepared programme is required to phase in various aspects of the system and to make use of complementary steps. The system has been a success and it is anticipated that the continued drive to improve the use of principles of the system will further improve safety. It is hoped that this paper will be of value to those personnel concerned with industrial safety in Australia.

The Rochester Mining District is located some twenty-five miles NE of Lovelock, Nevada. The District was discovered and named in the 1860's by prospectors from Rochester, New York. For a number of years, they worked Rochester Canyon, sinking shafts and inclines and making open cuts. After reaching a depth of approximately eighty feet, the miners tapped an underground channel and were driven from these workings by a strong flow of water leaving pumps in the shaft and barely escaping with their lives. With the Rochester workings no longer accessible, the miners went to the southeast and established the Relief Mining District. About 1881, gold was found in the gravel at the mouth of American Canyon, to the east of Rochester. These placers were worked until 1895, first by the Americans who reportedly took out $1 000 000, and later by the Chinese who mined the gravel with great skill. It was estimated that the Chinese took out as much as $10 000 000.

A flexible, efficient, and relatively low-cost drilling and blasting operation has evolved at Texasgulf Canada, Ltd.'s Kidd Creek underground mine. Located 32 km (20 miles) north of historic Timmins, Ontario, the underground operation utilizes a sublevel open stoping method developed with large-diameter blastholes. Over the years, Kidd Creek engineers have experimented with various drill-and-blast techniques, leading to the present-day practice. Continuing work is being conducted to further mechanize the blasting operation.
