It is bound to bring forth more and better work and to attract and keep workmen of the better class . There is keen competition between the various branches of this corporation for a trophy that is awarded each year to the one having the best accident record . This trophy was won by the Nacożari branch of the Moctezuma Copper Co. in Mexico in 1926 and 1927 , and the Morenci branch won the trophy in 1928 and 1929 .

The mining industry is faced with imperatives to improve worker safety and productivity, adapt to skills shortages, high worker turnover rates, and provide more effective maintenance to new and ever more complicated plant and equipment. While more effective use of data combined with advanced analytics offers opportunities for improvement, providing this information to the worker in the field, in real-time, has proven expensive, cumbersome and ineffective. New capabilities are now emerging which address some of the limitations experienced to date. Augmented reality (AR) provides a means to overlay interactive digital information on top of the physical world. Combining the latest visual display, mobile computing and ‘track and trace’ technologies, AR provides an experience similar to a heads-up display in a fighter jet through small, personnel devices, such as smart phones or wearable glasses. Applying AR would allow a mobile worker to ‘see’ all relevant information for a given task, in the context of their physical environment and at the time they require it. The technologies behind AR are rapidly maturing and becoming available at a price point that is viable for commercial applications. It is anticipated that AR will become ubiquitous at a consumer level within the next five years. The specific challenges faced by the mining industry make it an ideal early adopter of AR technologies. This paper examines a number of use-cases of how AR can be applied to the mining industry and the benefits that can be realised. The paper will identify areas of further work and viable opportunities for immediate adoption within the industry.

Permissible explosives are those that have passed the tests pre- scribed by the Bureau of Mines for explosives intended for use in coal mines, and are therefore recommended by the bureau as suitable for this class of work when used under the prescribed conditions. The tests for permissible explosives and the conditions prescribed for their use are described in Miners' Circular 6 of the Bureau of Mines. Up to June 1, 1915, 168 explosives had been classed as per- missible explosives; 133 of them were then on the bureau's "per- missible list" and 35 had been withdrawn by the manufacturers. In addition to the required physical tests, each explosive is sub- jected to a complete chemical examination in order that its exact composition may be known and also that the composition of future samples of the same explosive collected in the field may be compared with that of the sample which originally passed the bureau's tests, for by such comparison it may be possible to ascertain whether or not the explosive as supplied to the miner is still "permissible." This bulletin is published primarily for the purpose of informing manufacturers of such explosives as to the methods used by the Bureau of Mines in the analysis of samples received for tests to determine their permissibility. Such information may be of value in cases of possible controversy over the results obtained in the analysis of a field sample as compared with those obtained in ana- lyzing the sample originally tested by the bureau. Also, a descrip- tion of the methods used by the Bureau of Mines in the analysis of explosives should be of assistance to the many chemists engaged in similar analytical work.

In the quest to access valuable critical minerals, humankind is expanding the frontier into extreme environments like space and deep-sea mining. These ambitious enterprises involve considerable costs and lengthy development cycles to ensure the robustness of mining systems in the face of the harshest conditions and unforeseen challenges. Unfortunately, obtaining information from these unexplored territories is complicated. Data is often scarce, incomplete or impossible to obtain until equipment is deployed, leaving engineers facing many uncertainties throughout the design, testing, production and preparation of such missions. Despite these challenges, these extreme environments operate under consistent physical and chemical principles that can be faithfully digitally replicated. However, unexplored areas and dynamic systems like weather and geology continue to carry uncertainties. While eliminating uncertainties remains elusive, Digital Twins offers a means of robust risk management tool. These virtual replicas can excel in simulating extreme conditions and unexpected events, helping optimise and validate mining system designs tailored for such hostile environments. This study takes inspiration from the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity Rover’s wheel damage rate to develop a Multiphysics Modelling and Virtual Motion Simulation (MMVMS) system. Using advanced Generative Design, this MMVMS system refines the MSL’s design, simulates component and system performance, and assesses the risk of premature damage while operating on Mars. Additionally, MMVMS integrates cutting-edge CAD design technologies from aerospace and manufacturing to realistically recreate the Martian environment and a detailed representation of MSL, allowing mobility verification and validation simulation to test different components in terms of materials, design, weight, power and, therefore, cost. The research highlights the precision of MMVMS in replicating extreme conditions, simulating and evaluating internal and external variables influencing the entire system (Rover) in real-time, and predicting movements, failures, and premature damage. This sophisticated Digital Twin technology, showcased in this research, holds promise not only for space missions but also to be adapted for terrestrial and deep-sea mining operations.

Iron is one of the most exchanged commodities worldwide. Its use for steelmaking explains the growing demand in the metal which remains mainly produced by the mining and the beneficiation of iron ores. Flotation is the most used mineral separation technique worldwide, processing several billion tonnes (Bt) of ore annually, including, in some cases, hematite and magnetite ores. Based on the physicalchemical properties of mineral surfaces, flotation aims to selectively adsorb molecules that render mineral surfaces either hydrophobic or hydrophilic, known as collectors and depressants, respectively. Hydrophobic particles are then recovered in the froth by the injection of gas bubbles travelling up in the cell and attaching the hydrophobic particles. However, despite the popularity and the good performances of flotation, mining industry faces new challenges of decreasing grades and increased mineralogical complexness in ores. Many flotation variables, especially when related to reagent adsorption, remain poorly understood and it becomes necessary to gain knowledge to enhance the existing processes. Molecular modelling techniques like the density functional theory or molecular dynamics simulations (ie Classical molecular dynamics or Ab initio Molecular Dynamics) currently represent powerful tools for different applications in material sciences, like catalysis or depollution purposes. They have recently been successfully applied in the flotation area, with an increasing number of publications dealing with this topic every year. These tools provide crucial information on bulk and surface properties as well as on the adsorption mechanisms of reagents on mineral surfaces, key step in the flotation process, and synergetic effect of collector mixtures. A better understanding of the adsorption mechanisms of flotation reagents, provided by molecular simulations, will help to finely choose flotation reagents, and even lead to the development of new reagents formulations. Overall, these tools enable the discovery of practical and industrial solutions to improve the flotation process, which will undoubtedly help the mining industry to face its future challenges.

This article is a review of previous discussions about underground mining method selection and classification with the purpose to clearly define and classify the two groups of variables (indicators) involved in the mining selection process: key deposit indicators (KDIs) and key mining method indicators (KMIs). This paper provides a simple and clear approach for the classification and selection of a feasible underground mining method based on a predetermined set of favorable deposit characteristics, which are defined as key deposit indictors (KDIs). This article also gives a summary of the key advantages and disadvantages associated with every underground mining method based on their key mining indicators (KMIs). The selection method given in this paper is based on defining field KDIs and comparing them to the KDIs that are favorable to every considered mining method. By cross validating a matrix of favorable KDIs, the paper presents a simple approach to rank several underground mining methods using a scale from favorable to less favorable accordingly to the ore deposit characteristics (KDIs). KMIs are used to further complement KDI rankings by analyzing every method’s KMI performance based on the expected productivity of the mining operation being considered. To further assist the reader through the selection process, this paper gives basic sketches representing each of the primary underground mining methods discussed in this paper. Each method is given using the same 3D isometric view as spatial reference to assist the reader with visual interpretation and comparison between methods.

Although mining is currently one of the smallest academic units on the Colorado School of Mines(CSM) campus, it is alive and well, with nearly 100 undergraduate and graduate students. For many years, Mines has had undergraduate and graduate programs in hard-rock mining. The school has recently transferred its physical mineral processing activities to the Mining Department. The program has also expanded to include tunneling, underground construction and industrial minerals. There are current discussions about increased research activities on cement and other construction materials. The Mining Department also teaches its share of what is called the “distributed core” courses with curricular requirements common to related programs, as well as mining safety and health, in conjunction with our continuing education department.

A method is proposed for the continuous calulation of a rock mass in real time while tunnelling with a TBM. Rock properties are investigated through models of the fracture stress under the disc cutters, the quasi-shear stress between the disc cutters and the specific energy of cutting under the disc cutters. Comparison of theoretical and monitored data of cutting specific energy can be used to determine theoretically the prevailing shape and size of the bulk debris. The shape and size of the chips from a given rock vary with the boring parameters. Introducing shape and volume corrections into the models of the evaluated stresses suppresses the influence of the boring regime and allows the rock properties to become dominant

"Experiments in the determination of friction factors for fan-pipe installations were carried on in a Butte mine during the fall and winter of 1922-23, under a cooperative agreement between the Bureau of Mines and the Anaconda Ccpper Mining Co. The results have been summarized in a separate paper,*** and this report, which is one of several giving more detailed data, discusses the methods used and the application of the results to fan-pipe practice.The use of canvas and galvanized-iron pipe, 8 to 20 inches in diameter, with small fans, usually electrically driven blowers, is an important factor in the ventilation of metal mines and is increasing in coal mines and long tunnels. In the Matte district the standard installation is an electrically driven small blower fan and 8 to 16 inch canvas pipe.The application of available data on friction losses in sheet-metal pipe to mine installations was doubtful, and very little has been published on canvas pipe, except general statements that the friction looses are greater than in galvanized-iron pipe. Experiments by Weeks and others,**** who determined friction losses under laboratory conditions for a few typical materials used in mine equipment, supported the statements.In 1918, one of the authors (Richardson) conducted tests for the Anaconda Copper Mining Cc. on the friction losses in canvas-pipe systems and the beet type of centrifugal blower for use with such pipe lines. He obtained the average total resistance per unit of length in use, without reference to the variable conditions of the lines. The results were of great value in developing more efficient equipment for average service conditions, and indicated that average friction losses for the commercial canvas tubing then used by the company were equal to or lees than these given for galvanized-iron pipe. Later on, the particular canvas tested was discarded for a heavier and more service-material."

There are many uncertainties that a mine designer should consider when selecting an optimal layout. Even though the inherent variability in the design parameters indicates that single-values are not representative of mining conditions, risk estimators such as ERR are often used without considering their statistical distributions. A probabilistic methodology has been developed to assess the influence of the extraction sequence and layout geometry on the rockburst risk associated with four ultra-deep mining layouts. The statistical distributions of incremental energy release rates and excess shear stresses at face elements are used as indirect estimators of rockburst risk in stopes, and the statistical distribution of the rock condition factor (RCF) is used as an indirect estimator of rockburst risk in tunnels and service excavations.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) East Side Access project (ESA) will, when it is complete, provide a new link to the east side of Manhattan from Long Island, NY that, linked with the Second Ave. Subway currently under construction, will assist in relieving overcrowding at Penn Station as well as the Lexington Ave. subway. ESA will bring Long Island Railroad (LIRR) directly from Long Island into a new station located 37 m (120 ft) beneath the existing Grand Central Terminal (GCT) located in the heart of Manhattan. It will connect the LIRR?s mainline tracks in Queens, via the existing 63rd Street Tunnel under the East River, to a new terminal constructed within, and beneath, the historic Grand Central Terminal.

Ten years ago, only 3% of Consol's underground coal production resulted from using the longwall mining method. Today, that figure has grown to 45% and has helped the Pittsburgh-based concern fuel an upswing in productivity. The company reported that productivity at its underground mines, excluding labor strike periods, increased 24% between 1978 and 1981. Last year, an additional 8% increase was achieved. Efforts such as improved safety, training, engineering, and maintenance programs as well as the closing of unproductive mines has contributed to these gains, according to Joseph M. Richards, Consol's executive vice president of operations. But, Richards adds, a great part of the credit goes to longwall mining. What is Longwall Mining? To fully appreciate the advantages of longwall, one needs an understanding of how mining is done by other methods. For instance, in both conventional and continuous mining, rooms or tunnels are dug in the coal seam. Pillars of coal are left standing to support the roof as mining moves forward in the seam. In conventional mining, a slot is cut in the base of the seam and holes for blasting are drilled. After blasting, the coal is loaded. A more efficient method - continuous mining - uses a machine that combines cutting and loading. Longwall mining, by contrast, works backwards from the end of a panel. Two parallel sets of tunnels (development panels) are cut into a seam with continuous mining machines, then connected with a set of crosscuts at the far end. Min¬ing then proceeds back toward the entrance. Longwall mining employs some very productive machines. Large drum shearers, for example, run on a track along the length of the coal face for some 150-180 m (500-600 ft). The shearers cut the coal which falls onto a conveyor system or pan that also runs the entire length of the face. The longwall crew works under a roof of heavy steel supports called shields. As the coal is removed, shearers, pans, and shields are moved forward by hydraulic rams. The roof is allowed to collapse behind the shields. In addition to increasing production, longwall mining is considered to be safer because the miners work under strong steel shields. New designs have made them more rugged and maintenance free, as well as more stable on soft mine floors. Early roof supports, called chocks, had gaps in the roof canopies. The new roof shields now cover the entire working area and are better able to prevent roof material from falling into the working area, thereby improving safety and productivity. The aim of this joint work between the French Coal Board and the Paris School of Mines is to be able to practically model the behaviour of a transverse drum cutting rock with picks. First a theoretical approach leads to the concept of cutting curves, giving forces and torque against penetration per drum revolution. Then experimental evidence, from full scale and reduced scale testing, validated and confirmed the theoretical shape of the curves. Finally practical applications are given, to improve the design or use of a shearer (or continuous miner). A micro-computer program is being developed to predict the cutting performances of a machine in certain conditions.

In 1974, Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited started a 48 million dollar expansion programme at their property in Bathurst, New Brunswick. A portion of the expansion plans includes a 26 foot diameter 4,525 foot deep shaft, underground crusher and conveyor excavations and lower level access development. J. S. Redpath Limited was awarded the contract for the new shaft and associated rock work in May 1974. Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited, a member of the Noranda Group, operate this 10,000 ton per day lead, zinc, copper plant with proven reserves in excess of 90 million tons. While most of the ore is provided by the underground operation at the Number 12 ore body, some tonnage is produced from the open pit at the Number 6 ore body. Long range plans indicate a phasing out of the open pit and an increase in production from the underground operation. Existing facilities at the underground mine could not provide additional tonnage, thus the requirement for a new shaft. (Figure 1) The new shaft will also provide access to ore below the 2,800 level which is currently the bottom level of the existing facility. The contract called for sinking a 26 foot inside diameter, nine compartment concrete shaft 4,525 feet deep (Figure 2). Station access and ramp development from existing workings would be required to the bottom of the new shaft. In addition, development work for new crushing and conveying facilities was needed simultaneous with the shaft sinking.

INTRODUCTION This paper is the outgrowth of work done by the authors to prepare the seismic design criteria for underground structures on the Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) Metro Rail Project. It is a follow-on to a similar paper presented at the October, 1984, ASCE National Convention (17). For design, the earthquake-induced distortions recommended herein are to be added to the normal static loading conditions for the underground structure. This design approach has been used by 18 section designers on the SCRTD Project. Preliminary results from two- and three-dimensional finite element solutions have partially verified the approach. Areas where additional research is needed for special cases are identified. EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKE The effects of earthquakes on underground structures may be broadly grouped into two general classes -shaking and faulting. In response to earthquake motion of bedrock (shaking) , the soil transmits energy by waves. Seismologists identify various types of earthquake waves, but underground engineers are generally interested in the effects of transverse shear waves which produce a displacement of the ground transverse to the axis of wave propagation. "INTRODUCTION The work of using a system of air locks in unsealing a mine in Ohio following a fire probably was one of the outstanding jobs of its kind in a medium-thick coal bed.The fire in this mine, thought to have been of electrical origin, was discovered at about 1:30 a.m. on December 11, 1941. Forty-four men were working in the affected section at the time; 5 escaped unassisted, and 37, who had barricaded themselves, were rescued. The bodies of two men, who had succumbed after breathing fumes given off by the fire, were brought part way out of the mine before it became necessary to seal the mine.Direct attempts to extinguish the fire with water were abandoned when hazardous amounts of 'carbon monoxide, methane, and other inflammable gases were detected in return air passing through the main haulageway and escape-way of the mine.The mine was completely sealed on the surface at about 8 p.m. on December 12, 1941, with the two bodies remaining in the mine. Sixteen days after the mine had been sealed, the two bodies were recovered. This was accomplished by air-locking through a partitioned-off stairs compartment of a ventilation shaft. This work was done under adverse barometric and atmospheric conditions.A method for collecting representative air samples from the immediate fire area was used successfully by utilizing a vacuum pump on about 10,000 feet of existing water line that had been broken near the fire area.The immediate fire region was sealed, and confined to a relatively small area; the remainder of the mine was recovered, and operations were resumed February 9, 1942, or 59, days from the time of sealing the mine on the surface. This recovery was made by air-locking the main entries inby from the shaft and No. 2 right-face entries.The distance between air locks averaged about 500 feet, and as each new set of seal stoppings and air locks was completed, the old or outby seals were taken out and the area between was ventilated. In ventilating this area, it was often necessary to use line curtains to direct the air into dead-end places."

We hope you enjoy your experiences. This pamphlet, a guide to mining and mineral operations that may be observed or visited and some other points of interest relating to minerals, is intended to aid tourists and students who are interested in mining. Some may wish to study our Nation's romantic past; others may plan to enter the minerals industry as a career; still others may have a primary interest in conservation practices. The pamphlet is also intended to aid State and local officials, Chambers of Commerce, and mining firms in answering some of the many questions of tourists and students.

This paper, describing milling methods and costs at the Hillside Fluorspar Mines at Rosiclare, Ill., is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on non-metallic milling methods. The milling practice described is that of one of the large mines in the Kentucky-Illinois fluorspar field in southern Illinois and western Kentucky, on the Ohio River. Milling methods throughout the district are similar in their general principles, although details vary considerably in different plants.
