In 1989 Henry Fairlie wrote a cover story for The New York Republic, 'Fear of Living'. He noted, `The first Apollo space craft caught fire during a test on the launch pad. Three astronauts were killed, the nation was shocked and horrified, all the more because the screams and scrambles of the astronauts could be clearly heard'. After a brief delay in manned flights, the Apollo program resumed with strong public support; within 18 months, Apollo 11 landed on the moon. Fairlie contrasts the Apollo tragedy to the 1986 Challenger disaster. `The prevailing mood in America so panicked NASA that it took almost three years to send up another shuttle', he observed. `In 19 years between these tragedies, the idea that our individual lives and the nation's life can and should be risk-free has grown to be an obsession threatening to create an unbuoyant and uninventive society.' Taking risks is a normal part of our daily routine. The act of living involves minute-by-minute decision-making focused on survival through the practical management of risks. The act of breathing exposes each individual to the risk of infection while the act of crossing the road could almost be considered suicidal. We deal with these constant threats by observing simple rules of hygiene, safety or what may be labelled as common sense. The rules of community, designed to minimise risk in society, can at times lose focus and result in the imposition of schemes that have a far greater cost than the issues from which they protect. Effective management of risk, whether in the community or a business is about awareness and balance and the elimination of unacceptable risk. Risk cannot be eliminated from our lives or our working environment. However it can be managed if it is properly understood, monitored and controlled. The purpose of my presentation today is not to provide a comprehensive technical risk inventory but to capture the essence of risk and the application of management strategies designed to deal with it in a positive fashion. The basis of our differential financial reward system is risk. The key to successful management is to deal with the downside risks in such a fashion that the benefits of enterprise are not eliminated. The key question any investor must consider is `can the major risks assQciated with a venture be managed or eliminated while retaining a greater proportion of upside potential'. The answer to this question is the ultimate value an investor would assign to any project. In reviewing the relevance of risk to our industry the range of papers to be presented today provide examples of how management deals with specific components of risk. In each case the value of the business has been enhanced by the practical application of balanced risk management. The ultimate success of the industry depends very much on this concept as it also provides a public showcase upon which we are judged. Therefore, from all perspectives the effective management of risk is a cornerstone from which to build a stable and progressive mining industry.

There is a growing demand for copper driven by its applications in renewable energy and electric vehicles. Sulfide ores are an important source of copper. Flotation is a critical front-end process used to remove gangue minerals and concentrate the copper minerals. The electrochemical activity of sulfide minerals contributes to their overall activity in the flotation pulp. The mineral rest potential dictates how collectors interact with the mineral surface, and hence ultimately on the flotation response. Dissolved oxygen, (DO), pH, redox potential (Eh) and water composition and ionic strength are also significant in controlling flotation performance. The aim of this investigation was to determine the influence of the electrochemical environment both during milling and flotation on the flotation behaviour of bornite and chalcocite. For this investigation, the interactions of collector with bornite and chalcocite were studied using synthetic plant water (SPW1) and deionised water (DIW) at 5 different pH levels. Sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) was used both in microflotation, collector adsorption and zeta potential tests.

Located approximately 570km NNW of Adelaide in South Australia, the Olympic Dam mine (OD) is the world’s fourth largest remaining copper and gold resource and the largest uranium resource. Discovered in 1975 and going into production in 1988, the operation consists of a fully vertically integrated underground mine, mineral processing plant, copper smelter and refinery, as well as associated infrastructure. BHP achieved production of 203,000 tonnes of copper cathode plus associated by-products in financial year 2016. The immense size and high-grades of the Olympic Dam resource offer a range of growth pathways, making closure timing estimation and planning a challenge. Current estimates put the OD resource at approximately 79 million tonnes of copper. Major factors influencing the closure timing estimation, as a result of the large resource and grade tonnage profile, include the mining method that may be used and the downstream processing method, ultimately influencing such things as the total disturbance area and the extent of infrastructure to be demolished at the end of mine life. In addition, factors such as the mining and processing method and production rate have a direct impact on larger rehabilitation items such as the total number of tailings cells required.CITATION:Grant, D, Tyler, M and Hill, G, 2018. Seventy-nine gold deposits and prospects have been discoveried in the Jiamusi region of northeast China, and constitute one of the most important gold metallogenic belts in China. All these endogenic gold occurrences can be subdivided into three main deposit types: (1) porphyry related; (2) metamorphic-intrusive hosted, and (3) sediment-hosted deposit. The first two types of gold deposit are spatially and temporally related to Mesozoic Yanshanian granitoid intrusions with hydrothermal activity channelled along crustal-scale fissures. The ultimate cause of the Yanshanian magmatism is considered to be the subduction of Pacific oceanic lithosphere beneath the Eurasian continent. In contrast, The chemical sediment-hosted deposit is typified by the Dongfengshan gold deposit, and genetically related to Proterozoic sedimentation and Mesozoic igneous activities.

The increase in the proportion of sulphide ore treated by the gold mining industry has led to generally higher oxygen requirements. Additions of pure oxygen, hydrogen peroxide and in some cases calcium peroxide, have been proposed as a means of satisfying the oxygen demand and overcoming the problems from reactive sulphides in the ore. Current oxidant addition options and practice are reviewed.Laboratory oxygen demand tests are reported for a suite of ores to show some of the effects of pH and preaeration.Laboratory leach tests at high and low dissolved oxygen levels are reported on two of the ores with higher oxygen demands, and the results are assessed in terms of gold leaching kinetics, ultimate gold extraction, and cyanide requirements.

The Northland Peninsula of northern North Island, New Zealand contains a complex and diverse record of volcanism which reflects rapid tectonic changes during the late Cenozoic. The main volcanic associations observed on the peninsula are late Cretaceous- early oceanic crust obducted onto Northland at the end of the Oligocene, Miocene arc-type rocks and Pliocene-Quaternary intraplate basalts. This sucession of volcanic successions can be related to tectonic convergence developing into subduction and followed by a an environment of tectonic tension. While the volcanic activity is ultimately linked to specific tectonic regimes, because of rapid change magmatism was decoupled from the specific tectonic event. This decoupling of magmatism and tectonism appears to be a feature of the zones of plate interaction in the southwest Pacific region.

Glencore Coal Assets Australia (GCAA) operates five coalmines in Queensland and has rehabilitated thousands of hectares of mined land across these sites. Accordingly, GCAA seeks to continually improve rehabilitation outcomes over time and work towards progressive rehabilitation sign-off. The ultimate test of rehabilitation success is the attainment of an agreed land-use target, whether for biodiversity conservation or some type of agricultural production, and the ability of the rehabilitated landscape to resist degradation and retain desired functions (eg biodiversity protection or grazing productivity). However, success must be based on documented evidence that can demonstrate adequate progress towards rehabilitation targets and is assessed at appropriate intervals. To assist this task, a stepwise decision guide for the GCAA monitoring program was developed to ensure consistent monitoring data is collected across the range of sites. Mining companies often view water quality as an environmental issue. The importance of water quality as a production related issue in mineral beneficiation is greatly underestimated at many mineral processing operations. While most mine sites have comprehensive water balance data for water quantity, the information regarding the quality of water supplies available on site is limited, inadequate or non-existent. The seasonal variations in process water quality and changes in the composition of various water streams are not known. Despite the fact that water represents about 80 to 90 per cent of the volume of mineral pulp processed in a flotation plant, the influence of process water composition on flotation performance is often poorly understood. The process water used at mineral processing operations is made up from a number of available water sources, which can be classified as recycled water streams or make-up waters. The recycled water streams are commonly the tailings and concentrate thickener overflows, filtrate from the concentrate filtration plant and tailings dam return water. Make-up waters can originate from a variety of sources: surface waters (rivers, lakes, reservoirs, dams), groundwater (wells and springs), mains water (potable water), treated and untreated sewage waters and industrial effluents. Mineral processing plants are increasingly recycling water to reduce demand for fresh water and minimise the discharge of wastewater to the environment. However, increasing water recycling can have adverse effects on process water quality and ultimately on the performance of mineral separation processes. The main reasons for reduced plant performance due to water recycling are the accumulation of organic and inorganic compounds in the process water and increased microbiological activities. Other detrimental effects of water recycling can be increased reagent consumption and inefficient dewatering of tailings and concentrates. Recycling of water also tends to accumulate very fine suspended particles. Excessive amounts of slimes in the process water can also have an adverse effect on mineral beneficiation processes. The main constituents of process water are dissolved gases (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide), colloidal and suspended solids of inorganic and organic nature (including micro-organisms: dead or alive), dissolved organics (natural organic matter, residual reagents, reaction and decomposition by-products of chemical reagents, impurities in the reagents and metabolites originating from microbiological activities) and inorganic compounds (acids, alkalis, inorganic salts, metal ions, anions and heavy metals). Inputs to the chemical composition of process waters are: dissolution of soluble mineral phases present in the ore, surface oxidation followed by dissolution of mineral particles during grinding and mineral processing, the chemical composition of various make-up waters and recycled water streams, and reagent additions during mineral processing. The beneficial or detrimental impact of process water quality on flotation performance can be attributed to a number of subprocesses: adsorption and/or precipitation of inorganic and organic species present in the process water onto the surface of mineral particles, chemical reactions between process water constituents and the chemical species present on the surface of mineral particles and interactions between the chemical and microbiological species present in the process water and the various reagent species added in solution during mineral processing. Dissolved chemical species such as calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, lead, zinc, nickel, sulfates, phosphates and carbonates can have a strong effect on the electrokinetic properties of oxide and sulfide minerals, at certain pH ranges. Several reactions can occur at the solid-liquid interface that can play an important role in determining surface adsorption of reagents. Solid-liquid interfacial properties of mineral particles can be significantly affected by the conformation of adsorbed and precipitated reagent layers, which in turn are determined by solution chemistry. The chemical and microbiological constituents of process water can have a significant effect on liquid-gas interfacial properties and have a strong influence on froth height, strength and stability during flotation. Water chemistry can play an important role in determining the interactions between minerals present in the ore and the chemical reagents added in the mineral processing plant by altering the reagent-solution and mineral-solution equilibria. These interactions can include dissolution, micellisation and precipitation of reagents, dissolution of minerals contained in the ore followed by hydrolysis, complexation, adsorption and precipitation of dissolved chemical species and reactions between dissolved ions and various reagent species present in solution. All of the above mentioned subprocesses can ultimately have a significant effect on the efficiency of mineral processing operations. In this presentation, a systematic approach for assessing the composition of water supplies available at the mine sites and for investigating the influence of process water quality on the efficiency of mineral processing operations will be discussed. The consequences of mixing different quality water streams to produce the required volumes of process water for some flotation plants will be highlighted. To substantiate the water quality issues described in this paper some examples are given from a metalliferous processing perspective. However, the topics described in the paper are not only relevant to metalliferous processing but to all other type of mineral processing operations as well. In fact the principles described in this paper have also been successfully applied to the coal flotation industry.

Numerous recent analyses have shown that future demand for a broad range of critical commodities is unlikely to be met by new discoveries and recycling alone. The only practical alternative source to address this shortfall comes from orebodies which are currently either uneconomic or inaccessible. A common assumption is that a simple rise in commodity price will render these deposits economic. The mining industry has a long history of innovation allowing economic production from increasingly low grade and technically challenging orebodies. Industry “roadmaps” have been produced on a regular basis, with the aim of identifying future innovations which will allow this progression to continue. At the same time, there have been relatively few systematic analyses of the actual range of challenges facing undeveloped orebodies. The aim of this study is to analyse the mix of challenges faced by a group of undeveloped orebodies in order to better understand the relative importance and necessity of innovations applicable to the deposits, with the ultimate aim of determining the relative value and impact of possible innovations to the economic viability of those deposits. Organisations’ incident classification processes are plagued by the overclassification of events, often leading to excessive workloads and suboptimal outcomes. This presentation addresses the pressing need to rethink how incidents are classified to maximise organisational learning and minimise systemic risk. A major issue in the current incident classification landscape is the tendency to classify events at high levels, overwhelming organisations with investigations they cannot efficiently handle. This results in inadequate risk reduction and learning opportunities. The link between injury classification and investigation methods further compounds these problems, creating unnecessary administrative clutter. Challenging the misconception that every event, no matter how minor, requires a comprehensive investigation, this presentation advocates for a shift in perspective. The key recommendation is to decouple injury classification and risk matrices from the decision-making process regarding what and how to investigate. Instead, the emphasis should be placed on identifying opportunities for organisational learning and risk reduction. Organisations can streamline their incident management processes by adopting a more pragmatic approach that aligns incident classification with the organisation’s investigation capacity. This transformation focuses on achieving meaningful outcomes, enhancing safety and improving performance. This presentation provides an innovative process for organisations to revamp their incident classification practices, enabling them to harness the full potential of incident data for learning and risk mitigation. It highlights the importance of aligning incident classification with the opportunity for organisational learning, ultimately leading to more effective incident management and enhanced safety outcomes.

Determination of the sampling constant and liberation diameter are of importance when applying the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE) equation to optimise sampling protocols. The method for the direct determination of the sampling constant is based on the æGy 50-pieceÆ experiment and variants thereof, which is generally known as the heterogeneity test. In the coarse gold environment, the heterogeneity test is prone to poor repeatability and bias due to the very heterogeneity that it aims to quantify. A key issue is the large sample mass that can be required in the coarse gold environment, which may reach 1 t or more. The heterogeneity test often provides an evaluation of the background gold grade heterogeneity, but understates that of the high-grade coarse-gold component. This is because the total mass of fragments is usually too small to represent the mineralisation. Despite this relatively well-known problem, heterogeneity tests are often undertaken on deposits where the presence of coarse gold is ignored, not fully realised or vastly understated. Sampling types and protocol designs are frequently based on poor quality data that do not match the characteristics of the orebody. Linear interpolation of geo-related variables is important to different aspects of mining engineering such as long and short-term mine planning. The ore deposit description attained from spatial modeling of blast hole datasets has been widely taken into account, particularly, for short-term mine design and grade control, so as to define the ultimate destination of a mined block. It is approved in practice that making the wrong decision leads to losing a huge amount of money for choosing the destination of a mined block. In the case of complex ore deposits, the issue of estimation of variables in the region is questionable and somehow tedious. Due to this fact, modeling those complications in the co-spatial behavior of the grades in multi-element deposits prompts one to employ enhanced geostatistical techniques. Traditional approaches of this purpose such as polygon, inverse distance weighted and even (co)-kriging approaches, are incapable of reproducing those complexities such as non-linearity, heteroscedasticity and geological constraint that frequently exist among the variables of interest in those deposits. Another difficulty in employing those linear interpolations in grade estimation is smoothing effect, in which the estimated grades are over and under estimated. is placed in a waste rock dump, which is usually later reshaped to be erosionally stable, initiate and sustain vegetation and ultimately integrate with the surrounding undisturbed landscape. However, it is unclear how this exhumed material will weather and evolve for most sites. Also, there is a lack of data on the weathering of post-mining materials. If weathering is better understood, then there is the potential to improve rehabilitation outcomes. To improve predictions of the evolution of soil properties and weathering-limited erosion, estimating the rate at which fine, transportable material is produced from the weathering of larger, non-transportable particles and the resultant fragment size distribution and how that distribution evolves over time is necessary. This study examines the weathering process for four different coalmine waste rock materials for a Bowen Basin, Queensland site. Materials obtained from various areas of the coalmine were subjected to cyclic wetting and drying and heating and cooling. Particle size distribution and other material properties were explored after each experimental cycle to ascertain how the material changes during the experimental cycles. The particle size distribution data of wet and dry cycles were used as input data in a numerical weathering model to explore the dynamics of the weathering process for each material sample. A Monte Carlo framework was employed to assess the geometry of the weathering products, weathering rate and the number of daughter particles produced within a weathering cycle. Then the SSSPAM Landscape Evolution Model was used to evaluate the influence of weathering on erosion and landscape evolution of a post mining landform. SSSPAM simulations with: (i) active weathering and (ii) without weathering were run for each material. The erosion rate and the overall landform structure were then compared between weathering and non-weathering simulations.

Nautilus Minerals Inc is a sea floor resource exploration and development company focused on developing the Solwara 1 Project, a copper-gold sea floor massive sulfide deposit in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea, for which it holds a mining lease and associated environment permit.Economies depend upon four key types of capital: built, natural, financial and human. Natural capital consists of the ‘minerals, energy, plants, animals, ecosystems (climatic processes, nutrient cycles and other natural structures and systems) found on Earth that provide a flow of natural goods and services’ (Daly and Farley, 2004). Many ecosystem goods such as fish, fruit and water are already valued and sold in markets; however, some ecosystem services are not amenable to markets and have remained unvalued in traditional accounting methods, even though they provide significant value (such as flood protection, climate stability etc; Batker and Schmidt, 2015).There are now economic methods available to quantify and value natural capital and many non-market ecosystem services. When valued in dollars, these services can be incorporated into a number of economic tools, including benefit-cost analysis, accounting, environmental impact statements, asset management plans and rate of return on investment calculations. Their inclusion ultimately strengthens decision-making. When natural capital assets and ecosystem services are not considered in economic analysis, they are effectively valued at zero. This omission can lead to poor decisions, inefficient capital investments, higher incurred costs and losses due to unexpected events (Batker and Schmidt, 2015).In 2015 Earth Economics was commissioned by Nautilus Minerals Inc to conduct an independent, objective environmental and social benchmarking analysis of the proposed deep seabed Solwara 1 mine with terrestrial copper mines (referred to as ‘the report’). The report represents the first ever natural capital accounting and ecosystem goods and services framework for seabed mining.The report compares the proposed Solwara 1 mine with three terrestrial mines: Bingham Canyon (Utah, USA), Prominent Hill (South Australia, Australia), and Intag (a proposed mine in Intag Province, Ecuador), and provides a natural capital accounting assessment for all four operations.CITATION:Grogan, R, 2016. When production targets are not being reached it is essential to determine what the operating problems are so that remedial action can be taken. It is also imperative that all persons who are part of the production stream within a mining operation know and understand what the operating difficulties and delays are so that corrective action is effective. This includes the supervisors, superintendents, planning team members and managers. A new approach recently adopted at Hilton Mine to help identify these operating difficulties has been to use short-term schedules and reports known as the Daily Shift Schedule Controls (DSSC), and the Daily Weekly Operating Reports (DWOR) respectively. These control elements have enabled management and supervisory staff to accurately identify labour inefficiencies and ultimately determine capital resources.

Martabe gold and silver mine is situated in northern Sumatra and comprises several deposits in steep terrain that are required to be developed in the optimal sequence for the best possible Net Present Value (NPV) return on the project. In addition, the waste from the excavations is a by-product to be scheduled and used for construction of the tailings storage facility (TSF). These plans need to be aligned to ensure the tailings can be contained relative to the production rate. The TSF embankment construction includes potentially acid forming (PAF) waste that needs to be progressively sealed and rehabilitated to meet the closure requirements of the future.The mine is situated approximately 3 kilometres north of the township of Batangtoru in a seismically active zone between the off-shore subduction zone and the trans Sumatran fault. The mining operation currently includes two open cut pits with a third in development stage, an integrated TSF and dualpurpose valley-fill type waste rock storage facility (WRSF) and TSF embankment. Mine waste is used in construction of the WRSF / TSF embankment, including PAF waste rock, which needs to be scheduled for optimal use in construction activities in a manner that mitigates future acidic and metalliferous drainage (AMD) risks (Pearce and O’Kane, 2017).The Life-of-Mine (LOM) plans must satisfy both optimal pit development to maximise NPV and suitable delivery of waste for effective TSF construction matching the rate of rise of tailings, and consider AMD management, progressive rehabilitation and ultimately effective sustainable mine closure. Considering future water scenarios, as influenced by the increasing scarcity of water and the move towards sustainable process engineering etc, the closed water circuit becomes an important point of study in metallurgical operations, such as in milling and flotation. However, a deterrent in the use of recycled process water is often a lack of understanding of the effects of the accumulation of dissolved ions and other process chemicals. Recovery of the valuable minerals may be impacted by the concomitant complex mineral-pulp chemistry interactions. Literature indicates that these interactions are not necessarily antagonistic to process outcomes. Wet milling using steel media results in the dissolution of Fe from the media, the rate of which is dependent, inter alia, on the type of media and the chemical conditions of the aqueous environment in the mill. The pulp-phase interactions of dissolved ions with sulfide minerals may result in significant changes to the chemical conditions in the mill, which may subsequently impact negatively on the flotation recoveries. To understand the effect of these interactions in the context of the processing of sulfide minerals, this study seeks to consider the effect of three factors, viz mineral type – pyrite (Py) and galena (Gn) -, milling media of different compositions – forged steel (FS), 21 per cent high chrome and ceramic media -, and water chemistry, viz, deionised water (DI) and synthetic plant water (SPW). Ceramic media and galena are used for the respective control cases where the milling media and sulfide mineral contribute no Fe species. Using DI as a control case, a high ionic strength case is used to mimic the changes in water chemistry for a closed water circuit. Batch flotation tests are used as a diagnostic tool to determine the effects of these media-water-mineral interactions to investigate correlations between the chemical reactions occurring and chemical species present during the milling process and the ultimate flotation performance.

Cannington mine is a silver lead zinc operation located in north west Queensland. The operation has been in production since 1997. Ore is primarily moved through an underground material handling system comprising of a crusher, conveyor and hoist. The underground crusher and conveyor system were sited in lower grade ore when the mine was first commissioned. As Cannington is now a mature operation, this ore is considered run of mine and stoping progressed into the crusher exclusion zone. As the stoping fronts advanced there was increased damage on the crusher chamber and infrastructure. In response to monitoring data, the crusher monitoring system was significantly upgraded in 2016. The monitoring system included rock mass and infrastructure instrumentation. It improved the understanding of stress impacts and mechanisms driving the damage within the chamber. It allowed the site geotechnical team to respond to changes utilising ground support, mining sequences and increased levels of monitoring. As stoping and damage to the rock mass continued, so did the process of responding to monitoring data. Ultimately, the monitoring system enabled a safe and controlled closure of the chamber.
