Since the beginning of the nuclear era, there has never been a commercial solution for the large quantities of depleted uranium hexafluoride generated from uranium enrichment. In the United States alone, there is already in excess of 1.6 billion pounds of DUF6 currently stored. INIS is constructing a commercial uranium processing and fluorine extraction facility. The INIS facility will convert depleted uranium hexafluoride and use it as feed material for the patented Fluorine Extraction Process to produce high purity fluoride gases and anhydrous hydrofluoric acid. The project will provide an environmentally friendly and commercially viable solution for DUF6 tails management.

"THE FOLLOWING notes on coal mining in the Edmonton city area are based, in the main, on scattered reports and accounts as little coal mining has been done in this area for about 20 years and few people are left who were involved in what was at one time an important industry of northern Alberta. Although coal mining is not likely to be permitted in the city area itself in the future, a record of this work is warranted to indicate the ·conditions and problems that may be encountered if underground mining again is proposed in the district in the same geological formations and in similar strata. Coal mining in the Edmonton area developed with the influx of settlers in the latter part of the nineteenth century and the first part of the present century. Probably local coal was used by the Fort's blacksmith as early as 1841, and the early settlers probably were 'gopherholing' into the outcrops along the river banks by the 1870s. The first report of commercial coal mining was in 1880 when a contract was let by the Hudson's Bay Company for the provision of 300 tons. As the population in the city and northern parts of the province grew, many new mines were opened along the river and in the district, and coal was even shipped by barge to points in Saskatchewan(1 ,2) By 1909 the Department of Public Works reported that 'Edmonton stands as the second largest domestic coal producing centre in the province'. It continued to hold this position until 1942. From about 1912 to 1951 annual production from mines in the city and surrounding district ranged between 0.38 and 0.65 million tons, depending on weather, wars and strikes. Production began to decline in 1951 because of the increasing availability and consumption of natural gas which was piped into the city and then provided to other towns and rural areas in the northern part of the province. Taylor noted that between 1880 and March 1970, when the last mine within the city area closed, the total of mines and prospects within the Edmonton city area rose to 153. Most of them were small; not more than 20 produced more than a quarter of a million tonnes during their entire life, and only three produced a million tonnes or more. As described by Taylor ""within the city district workings extend discontinuously from the apex of a narrow triangle near Groat Bridge to the base of the triangle in the Clover Bar area"". The larger mines were in this latter area. Approximate locations of the old mine workings in the city are shown in Taylor's atlas. A number of other coal mines were worked in the Rabbit Hill, Big Island, St. Albert, Namao, Cardiff and Morinville districts around the city."

In these times of increasing costs and diminished returns, energy consumption is one source of savings that remains relatively untapped in the mining sector. Typically, 15% to 40% of operational costs can be attributed to energy in mining operations. This ?process variable? is a complex, multi-faceted variable that involves government regulations, societal pressures, cost and competitiveness. A mining company able to successfully embrace an energy efficiency program is more often than not a successful mining company. Production optimization programs, relatively common today, provide increased production, increased availability of assets and, in many cases, improved quality. They generally ignore the energy question altogether. Production Energy Optimization combines reductions in energy consumption with production improvements to reduce the cost per unit of production while improving emissions reporting. An energy strategy in mining and mineral processing operations is a critical component of Production Energy Optimization. This strategy must support the financial and operational integrity of the business. Developing a successful energy strategy requires a well structured approach such as following: ??Understanding where energy is being used and why, ??Recommending and implementing energy conservation measures, ??Driving visibility to targets and results, ??Re-evaluating continuously. "The Sheerness Mine, a new surface coal mine located near Hanna, Alberta, went into full production in mid-1995. The mine, which is operated by Luscar’s subsidiary Forestburg Collieries (1984) Ltd., has the design capacity to supply up to 2.1 million tonnes of sub-bituminous coal per year to the adjacent Sheerness Generating station under a 30-year contract. This paper documents the construction phase of this project and highlights the major equipment purchases as well as the construction of the mine facilities. The paper also focuses on some of the areas where cost savings have been achieved that have allowed the mine to come on stream six months ahead of schedule, and under budget. Project ReviewMine DescriptionThe Sheerness Mine is located 25 km southeast of the town of Hanna in southeastern Alberta (Fig. 1). The mining property occupies the western portion of the Sheerness CoalField and borders the Montgomery Mine, operated by Manalta Coal Ltd. in the east, and Highway 36 in the west. The Montgomery Mine and the Sheerness Mine exclusively supply the total coal requirement of the adjacent Sheerness Generating Station. The station is owned jointly by Alberta Power Limited (APL) and TransAlta Utilities Corporation (TAU). APL is the operator. Manalta’s Montgomery Mine has supplied coal to the Sheerness Station since its opening in 1986. Coal is shipped by truck from the mines over a network of haul roads to the coal receiving hoppers located on the east side of Highway 36."

"There are many critical application issues that affect all AC drives, but there are several that are absolutely mandatory for pulse width modulated (PWM) AC drives. If these rules are not followed, the drive system will have insulation, bearing EMI or noise problems. Pulse Width Output VoltageFigure 1 shows the output current of a typical pulse width modulated (PWM) drive. This is, of course, not a clean sine wave thus will have a lot of very significant harmonics. In fact, the harmonic spectrum is directly related to multiples of the carrier switching frequency plus side bands related to the basic output frequency. A typical spectrum for a PWM source bridge switching at 5 kHz is shown in Figure 2. Notice that the spectrum has multiples of the 5 kHz switching frequency and the number of side bands gets larger as the harmonic number increases.IGBT Switching TransientsWhenever we have PWM inverter switching, voltage transients are formed that propagate (usually at about half the speed of light) down the power cables to the motor just like in a radio frequency transmission line. If we do not terminate these transmission lines (motor cables) properly, the voltage pulses will be reflected when they reach the motor end and will be transiently increased up to twice their original amplitude.This transient voltage rise, shown in Figure 3, is important for three reasons:1. Insulation Voltage Stress — Higher voltage stress in the motor connecting cables and motor insulation will lead to a shorter insulation lifetime. If any of the voltage transient peaks exceed the insulation corona discharge level (partial discharge level), the insulation will gradually degrade with each voltage pulse. When it has been sufficiently degraded, it will then fail.Most new “inverter rated” motors have triple layer insulation which has a 1600 to 2000 volt partial discharge level. This will make them suitable to withstand the double voltage peak transient from a 600 volt inverter. It is wise to make sure of this fact, since a “standard” induction motor will only withstand about 1200 volts. Use of a standard motor in this application would shorten its life drastically. This can sometimes be as little as a matter of hours."

The renewed interest of the past few years in the Appalachian and Michigan oil provinces has not, as yet, created any marked increase in activity in Southwestern Ontario. During 1960 development drilling in-creased somewhat over 1959, but exploratory drilling decreased slightly. More attention was devoted to the deeper horizons, but lake drilling de-creased considerably. Oil production reached a new peak and gas production increased slightly. During 1960 an interesting oil and gas discovery was made in the Cambrian and gas discoveries six miles off-shore in the eastern part of Lake Erie were made in the Clinton-Cataract zone of the Silurian. This paper reviews activities during 1960, summarizes the discoveries made to-date and the pertinent exploration data relating to the prospects of the region and discusses some of the economic aspects of exploration and development. "An aluminum A356 compressor impeller was sand cast using the Low Pressure technique. The casting was limited in size (170 mm in diameter, 1.2 kg in weight) and very intricate in shape thus making 3D mold printing particularly favorable; indeed, producing this part by the traditional pattern-core box route would involve mounting 12 cores inside the mold while stringent dimensional tolerances are required as the impeller blades are only 2 mm thick. Consequently the molds were produce on the X-One MFlex printer of Quebec Metallurgy Center - CMQ. A dozen castings were produced with different casting temperatures and filling times so that it was possible to assess under which conditions complete filling of the mold cavity would be achieved. Filling and solidification modeling allowed predicting misruns and metallurgical properties inside the A356 (AlSi7Mg04) casting.INTRODUCTION Recent advancements in additive manufacturing enable foundries to produce molds without the tooling (pattern and core boxes) necessary when conventional technology is used (Eyad, 2016). This is particularly advantageous when dealing with intricate shapes and/or when a limited number of parts must be produced within a few days rather than in 5 weeks. An additional advantage is gained when producing prototypes (Johnson, 2016) as changes are much less costly and time consuming when made on a numerical 3D drawing rather than on patterns and core boxes. 3D printing is normally economical for a small number of parts; however, if the part is not too big and very intricate in shape such as the part that will be studied in the present work, 3D printing can be economical even for an important number of castings to be produced. On the other hand, low pressure casting is a high integrity casting process in which the mold cavity is filled from the bottom via a transfer tube in which the liquid aluminum rises under the pressure applied at the surface of the melt as illustrated in Figure 1. The filling can thus be precisely controlled, eliminating the turbulence created when the mold is filled from the top (gravity casting). Also, the pressure applied on the melt during solidification results in excellent feeding of the casting when conditions of directional solidification are met. In the present work, the compressor impeller shown in Figure 2 will be sand cast by low pressure."

"Abstract - Africa is endowed with a number of the world's giant ore deposits which have contributed significantly to the development of their host countries. Mineral exploration has a long history in the continent, but mining on an unprecedented scale took off during the latter part of the 19th century, accompanied by the development of lines of communication and other infrastructure to service the major mining centres .The ""Winds of Change"" which swept Africa in the 1950s and 1960s brought in new styles of government and economic management to a number of regions, often with demise of economic viability and infrastructure. ln recent years, with the end of the cold war, collapse of communism and changes in South Africa, new opportunities for mineral exploration are opening up rapidly in Africa. However, due to the large cost, long lead-in time, and high risk of developing new mineral ventures in the continent, it is necessary for the host countries to draft realistic and favorable mineral laws and fiscal codes in order to attract, and not deter, potential mineral investors.There will be an on-going role in mineral exploration throughout Africa for the artisanal miner, the smaller entrepreneurs and mining companies, exploration aid programs funded by the developed countries through African governments, as well as the major mining houses who have the resources to develop larger viable mineral deposits."

The Curtin University Gold Technology Group has been involved in surveying, modelling and optimisation of batch centrifugal concentrator type gravity circuits and CIP/CIL circuits for nearly two decades. The most commonly asked question regarding gravity recovery is, “What is the benefit of a gravity circuit”, which can be hard, if not impossible, to quantify. With the help of the AMIRA P420 Project’s Integrated Liberation Leach Model (ILLM) it is now possible to evaluate the effect of gravity recovery on total gold recovery when changes are made to the grind size, gravity and/or leach/adsorption circuits. This paper demonstrates how the ILLM can be used to determine the net benefit of introducing or modifying a gravity circuit and assess the effect of operating conditions (grind size, coarse gold size distribution, leach residence time, carbon activity, etc.) on plant performance.

"The microstructure of Al-10Si-0.3Mg-0.5Mn alloy with 0.27% Zr and 0.19% V addition was quantitatively analysed and compared to the base material. The addition of Zr and V in the AlSi10Mg alloy exhibit a beneficial effect on the Si modification, resulting in the reduction of the size of eutectic Si particles on both as-cast and T6 conditions. The quantitative image analysis results show that the Zr and V addition and T6 treatment can reduce the size of the intermetallic phases. In addition, the presence of Zr and V is favour to the partial dissolution of the intermetallic phases during the T6 treatment. Different heat treatment procedures were tested to optimize treatment parameters. The mechanical properties of the alloys were evaluated using hardness measurements and tensile tests. The results show that the addition of Zr and V can remarkably improve the mechanical properties on as-cast and T6-treated conditions. The correlation between the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloys is discussed.INTRODUCTION Al-Si-Mg foundry alloys have been widely used in automotive and aerospace industries due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, heat-treatable capability and excellent castability. The alloying elements such as Cu, Mn, Fe are traditionally added into Al-Si-Mg alloys to improve their mechanical properties (Mohamed, Samuel, Samuel & Doty, 2009). In recent years, the attention has been paid to the effect of the transition elements such as Zr, V, Ti, etc, as minor alloying additives, on the properties of aluminum alloys (Elhadari, Patel, Chen, & Kasprzak, 2011; Kasprzak, Amirkhiz & Niewczas, 2014; Shaha, Czerwinski, Kasprzak, Friedman & Chen, 2015; Shaha, Czerwinski, Kasprzak & Chen, 2014; Mahmudi, Sepehrband, Ghasemi & 2006; Meng, Cui, Zhao & Zuo, 2013). Kasprzak et al., (2014) and Shaha et al., (2015) reported that additions of Zr, V, and Ti in Al-Si-Cu-Mg cast alloys can improve the alloy mechanical properties at high temperature by forming stable intermetallics and precipitates on as-cast and heat treatment conditions. On the other hand, the mechanical properties of near-eutectic and eutectic Al–Si cast alloys depend not only on the chemical composition but also, even more importantly, on microstructural features such as the morphology and size of eutectic silicon and intermetallic particles, which are present on both as-cast and heat treatment conditions (Mohamed et al., 2009). However, there is rather limited information on the effect of Zr and V on the microstructure features and mechanical properties of near-eutectic Al-Si-Mg cast alloys."

This work demonstrates the feasibility of using confocal surface profilometry to measure and characterize wear of graphite anode surfaces. This method was tested using anode samples that were electrolyzed for 24 hours in a laboratory-scale magnesium cell with a high oxide molten salt electrolyte. The oxide produced accelerated wear on anodes designed for low oxide electrolytes. Contour maps, which are effective at displaying non-uniform wear, and total graphite consumption values were generated from the collected surface coordinates. Along with both qualitative and quantitative analysis capabilities, this measurement system was shown to have a fine resolution and a low detection limit.

It is well known that underground miners are exposed to one of the most dangerous working environments on earth. As mine delve deeper, the geological factor, mine position and climate condition as well as heat generation from mining machine give rise to the mine operating temperature. This, in turn, has an adverse effect on the environment and thus leads to higher operating costs. Careful estimation and design of air flow rate, spray system, cooling load and additional ventilation auxiliary equipment are of importance to ensure safety, comfort and productivity whilst maintaining low operating cost. A computational fluid dynamics simulation approach is employed to examine underground mine ventilation in a 36 m cul-de-sac of tunnel of coal mine. The model predictions in the turbulent range were validated by comparison with published data. Different turbulence models were tested to select one that yields adequate accuracy and is computationally efficient. Effects of the following parameters are evaluated: tunnel geometry, air flow rate and inlet air temperature. The objective of the simulation is to arrive at an optimal strategy for ventilation and thermal comfort at low cost.

"Many deposits have a geological model developed early in the project stages, which is not always reviewed or modified as the project matures and production commences. Conversely, ongoing pressures, due to a combination of declining head grades, a push for increased revenue and a multitude of other reasons, leads to processing plant modifications, with the primary aim being to increase production. Often, the ore deposit knowledge is not sustained or developed during the operational stages to the level carried out during the prefeasibility and feasibility study phases. This results in the variability within the deposit being poorly understood and a lack of data and knowledge being available to support (and ideally optimise) operations particularly in an environment where the flow sheet has changed and ore feed requirements are complex.INTRODUCTION This paper presents a case study of ore deposit knowledge development and corresponding process plant operating strategy at the Ladolam Gold Deposit, commonly referred to as the Lihir gold deposit in Papua New Guinea. The gold deposit is located in a tropical equatorial climate on the east side of Lihir Island in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea. Gold mineralisation was discovered in 1982, and was followed by a major exploration campaign by a joint venture between Kennecott (Rio Tinto) and Nuigini Mining Limited. The first drillhole was drilled in 1983, and after an extensive period of drilling consisting of 343 holes for 83,500 m, the final Feasibility Study was completed in 1992. The feasibility study was based on a Reserve base of 37.9 Moz in refractory sulphide ore, with gold extraction proposed to occur via whole ore pressure oxidation due to the refractory nature of the mineralisation. The Lihir Special Mining Lease (SML) was granted in 1995 to a new PNG company – Lihir Gold Limited, and Rio Tinto established Lihir Management Company to develop and operate the mine on behalf of LGL. Mining and processing of the deposit commenced in 1997. Newcrest Mining Limited purchased Lihir Gold Limited in August 2010, and subsequently completed a major plant upgrade including the installation of additional grinding, autoclave and carbon-in-leach capacity. Post commissioning of the upgrade, Newcrest has continued to increase throughput and production. A reinvigorated ore body knowledge development program has significantly assisted this process in identifying operating strategies for the process plant and delivering recovery improvement projects to address declining head grade and recovery due to increased stockpile feed and flotation circuit use."

In this work, the age-hardening behavior of cast Al-Si base alloys was investigated. It was found that multiple aging peaks are present in the age-hardening curves of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys. TEM observations reveal that the age-hardening behavior is related to the precipitation sequence of the alloy. For the Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy, the first aging peak is the result from the high-density GP zones, while the subsequent are from metastable phases. The transition from GP zones to metastable phases may be the main reason of the formation of multiple aging peaks.

"Investment casting offers many advantages for the near net shape production of complex geometries, however, molten titanium reacts with most of the refractories used in investment casting shelling systems, which leads to the formation of an oxygen contaminated surface layer. This layer, called alpha case, is 0.1 to 0.6 millimeters in thickness according to the casting section size and must be removed either by mechanical or chemical milling processes. Alpha case removal processes affect casting tolerances and may contaminate the part intended for medical applications (e.g. embedding of abrasive grit media in the alloy). A shelling system based on an yttria prime slurry has been developed and was found to almost suppress the mold metal reaction. Yttria is an expensive refractory, but slurry life was found acceptable for small castings using a closed container and flow coating process instead of conventional pattern dipping. Alpha case depth has been determined for Ti6Al4V by metallographic techniques and microhardness measurements on different step block casting cross sections. Alumina and yttria second prime stuccos were evaluated in this study. The shelling system minimizes finishing operations in the production of casting for medical applications.INTRODUCTIONTitanium investment castings have been in the commercial market since the beginning of the titanium era in the mid 50’s. Investment casting is a cost effective way to produce complex parts for medical, aerospace and chemical processes applications. Investment casting of titanium is difficult due to the high reactivity of titanium with air and refractories used for shell mold building especially for the face coat. Melting is done under vacuum and no shelling system has been proven effective to suppress the mold-metal reaction yet. The main issue with the mold-metal reaction is the formation of an oxygen enriched zone at the surface of the castings named alpha case (Frueh et al., 1997; Kim, 2002; Saha, 1986). The alpha case is brittle, reduce the fatigue life in service of the parts and must be removed by chemical milling.For industrial purposes, calcia partially stabilized zirconia based slurries have become widely used in titanium investment casting for primary coats due to a combination of limited metal shell reaction. Calcia stabilized zirconia slurries have an acceptable shelf life and offer an interesting production window. Our experience shows that a resulting alpha case depth is 280 micrometers for a casting section of 6.35 mm in thickness is typical with such a shelling system (Morin, 2013)."

This paper presents the field experience of Siemens with regard to Gearless Drives in the mining industry ? We consider the elapsed production hours of Siemens Gearless Drives to be extensive enough to provide a reliable estimation of availability calculated on the basis of data representing repair time, downtime, and operating time. The users of Siemens Gearless Drives confirm an availability of more than 98% after exclusion of some major issues. The paper addresses all of these major issues of Siemens Gearless Drives, describes successfully applied corrective measures, explains the influences on the design of the drives, and lists the downtimes associated with each of these issues.

Fair market value, in the legal sense , is the price which a prudent and knowledgeable buyer and a prudent and knowledgeable seller, acting without constraint or compulsion , will agree upon to exchange an asset. In the ordinary commercial or engineering usage, the term may imply simply the market value or a reasonable and equitable price. The engineer evaluator who is called upon to express an opinion about the fair market value of an asset may be able to base his estimate on the sale price of similar assets or on the market values of stock. Frequently such indicators of value are not available and the evaluator must devise other means of appraisal. Mineral resource properties may be thought of as having value by virtue of the existing or potential ability to produce at a profit. Conventional procedures permit the computation of the present value of future revenues having due regard for the time value of money and the risks attendant upon the realization of the venture. Such computations have gained wide acceptance as a basis for the estimation of fair market value.

"This study is part of large and an ongoing investigation into the development of a light-weight and highly fluid mine fill for various applications in mining and civil operations. Foam mine fill is the new material proposed for backfilling mines, and is fabricated by mixing stable foam into a mixture of tailings, binders, and water. This paper investigates the effects of both binder dosage and the amount of foam used upon the mechanical and physical properties of foam fill, mainly in regards to compressive strength, porosity and density.Samples were prepared using tailings from a copper mine as the inert material, Normal Portland Cement as the main binding agent, and a foaming agent with a foam generator. Samples were cured for 7, 14 and 28 days and were then subjected to unconfined compressive strength (UCS) testing. Select samples were subjected to mercury intrusion porosimetry, so as to study the microstructural properties. An empirical model was then developed, using a response surface methodology to establish a relationship between the investigated parameters. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDThe disposal of mine tailings is a significant issue in the mining industry, particularly as mine production increases. Many mines re-use mine tailings for backfilling, which is a method for reducing environmental exposure to tailings, maintaining underground stability, and increasing ore recovery (Benzaazoua, Belem & Bussière, 2002).This paper introduces a new type of backfill called ‘foam mine fill’. This proposed backfill material is similar to cellular concrete, as air bubbles are entrained in cement or lime mortar, resulting in a cellular structure (Narayanan & Ramamurthy, 2000). Air voids can occupy up to 70% of the volume of concrete, which makes it light- weight, and thus can be used for a wide range of civil applications, including backfilling (Tarasov et al. 2010; Panesar, 2013). Unlike cellular concrete, the incorporation of air bubbles into a mixture of tailings, binder and water makes foam fill a potential new backfilling material. Furthermore, a preliminary investigation on foam fill samples found that pulp densities should be optimized before adding the foam, in order to produce consistent samples without foam segregation or losses (Hefni et al., 2014)."

The Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan and Alberta is an exceptionally rich metallogenic region, hosting more than 2.8 B lb U3O8, of which over 927 M lb U3O8 have been mined out since extraction first started in the late 1970’s. A detailed compilation of several empirical features of 85 deposits located within the basin was conducted in order to understand the distribution and variability of the geological characteristics of the mineralization and its associated alteration. A new empirical classification was devised based on four parameters: 1) geometry of the mineralization (dimensions and relation to the unconformity surface), 2) size, grade and metallurgical complexity of the mineralization, 3) lithostructural setting, and 4) extent and nature of associated alteration haloes. This compilation defines the footprint characteristics of the Athabasca Basin deposits, which guides decision-making processes from early exploration and discovery to resource expansion and extraction.
