"The LaRonde mill was commissioned in 1988 and began treating ore from the Penna shaft in 2000. The mill has been expanded to accommodate 7,500 t/day, but ramped down to 6,000 t/day since the deep extension began. The process recovers gold, silver, and base metals. In 2008, the Goldex plant began trucking gold-pyrite concentrate to a treatment plant feeding pulp to the LaRonde mill, increasing gold output by 40,000 oz. In 2009, the high-grade Lapa ore processing facilities were annexed to the LaRonde plant, increasing gold output by 120,000 oz. This paper outlines the metallurgical considerations related to the treatment of different ore types.RÉSUMÉ Le concentrateur de la mine LaRonde a été mis en service en 1988 et a commencé à traiter le minerai du puits Penna en 2000. La capacité du concentrateur a augmenté afin de permettre le traitement de 7 500 tonnes de minerai par jour, capacité qui est retombée à 6 000 tonnes par jour (tpj) depuis le début de l’extension en profondeur de la mine. Ce procédé permet de récupérer de l’or, de l’argent et des métaux communs. Cet article passe en revue les considérations métallurgiques liées au traitement de différents types de minerai.INTRODUCTIONThe LaRonde metallurgical plant in the Abitibi region of Quebec, Canada, evolved into a mature milling site following expansions in 2000–2003, thanks to improved processes, manpower, and water treatment capabilities that better accommodate the complex constituents of the LaRonde ore. The ore requires a sequence of grinding, copper- lead and zinc flotation, and precious metals leaching, ending with a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold recovery. A portion (35%) of the tailings is sent back underground as paste backfill after being treated with the SO2-air cyanide destruction process. The tailings area has a dedicated cyanide destruction and metal precipitation area through which the used water passes before returning as recycled water. A biological water treatment plant was built in 2004 to address water toxicity in the final effluent. The water toxicity was the result of the high sulfide content of the LaRonde ore (from thiocyanate or stable cyanide species buildup) and the use of 90% recirculated water in the mill. The water treatment plant uses bacteria to transform thiocyanate into nitrates and precipitate phosphorus from the water before it is discharged into the environment."

The Olympic Dam iron-oxide copper-gold (IOCG) uranium-silver deposit is the largest publicly declared uranium, fifth largest copper and third largest gold resource. Currently, the operation consists of an underground mine and integrated processing plant. Uranium is produced from leaching of flotation tailings and is a co-product to copper cathode with by-product gold and silver bullion. The Olympic Dam geometallurgy team began studying ore from the Southern Mine Area (SMA) in 2006 and soon discovered uranium behaviour was far more variable than the behaviour in the Northern Mine Area, which had been mined from the start of the operation in 1988. The primary objective of Olympic Dam geometallurgy is to develop metallurgical performance predictors that reliably describe the process performance of different ore types and distribute these into the resource block model for use as a fundamental input into mine planning. The nature of the uranium mineralisation (compositionally and texturally complex and highly variable) meant that classic mineralogy techniques alone could not provide the resolution required for prediction of uranium extraction. However, the combination of quantitative mineralogy, results from laboratory-scale leach tests and modelling within the geometallurgy program has enabled prediction of both uranium flotation recovery (via association with sulphides) and uranium leach extraction, including at variable leach conditions. These stope-based predictions have supported trade-off decisions between operating costs and uranium revenue, and have predicted the changing recovery as the mining operations have moved into the Southern Mine Area in recent years.

Advocate Mines Limited came into initial production on June 30, 1963, with an annual capacity in excess of 60,000 tons of high-quality chrysotile asbestos fihres, thus strengthening Canada's position in world production. The history of this development is traced from discovery through initial exploration, financing, orebody delineation and evaluation, pilot-plant production and product evaluation, construction of the plant, construction of deep?-sea shipping facilities, provision for a closed shipping season, and provision for the remoteness and for the lack of services, through to realization of full production capacity. The many unique aspects of the project are given special attention, particularly in the light of the first year of full-capacity operation. The marketing of the products in a highly competitive world market is reviewed, with special emphasis on product evaluation, quality control and the shipping of high-quality products to consumers throughout the world. "Barrick Gold is in the process of expanding one of its grinding circuits at the Goldstrike property as a response to both increasing ore hardness and increased ore sensitivity to finer grinding as it relates to gold recovery. The plant currently operates with two parallel grinding lines, each with a SAG mill, a pebble crusher, and a ball milling arrangement. As part of determining what additional equipment was to be required, a CEET evaluation program was conducted (CEET is an acronym for Comminution Economic Evaluation Tool). The work included: Development of a hardness ‘model’ for the ore body, as described by SAG Power Index and Bond Work Index;Site benchmarking surveys to fine tune the SAG and ball mill calibrations within CEET;Conducting CEET studies to examine the process options;Comparing CEET results to standard grinding circuit design techniques.The recommendation of the study, presently being implemented, is the installation of an additional ball mill on one of the two grinding lines. This paper reviews the sizing techniques applied, providing a CEET case study for circuit performance analysis and circuit design. OVERVIEW OF COMMINUTION AT GOLDSTRIKEOre feeding the autoclaves at Goldstrike are first processed through two parallel grinding lines. Both lines use SAG mills with cone crushing of pebbles followed by ball milling. A summary of the key circuit parameters is provided in Table 1. Line 1 primarily processes underground Meikle ore, although when no Meikle ore is available, it processes open pit Betze ore. Line 2 processes Betze ore exclusively. The Mill Line 1 P80 objective for Meikle ore is 74 microns. According to the recovery optimization analysis, a P80 of 90 microns was recommended for Betze ore. The potential however exists to perform co-mingling of both ore types and feed the higher grade Betze ore to Line 1, in which case the P80 of 74 microns would be retained."

DURING the summer of 1942 several chromite deposits were discovered in the Lac du Bonnet district about eighty miles northeast of Winnipeg. The deposits are confined to the Bird River complex, a folded composite sill of basic and ultrabasic igneous rocks of early Precambrian age that lies to the north of Bird river (1). The outcrop of the sill represents the trace of an easterly plunging anticline, the south limb extending from the northeast bay of Lac du Bonnet eastward to Bird lake, and the other limb, 6 to 12 miles north, lying between Maskwa river and Euclid lake. The south limb of the sill is 20 miles long, and the northern counterpart 15 miles; but its continuity is interrupted by faulting and by the intrusion of younger granite, so that the total length of outcrop of both limbs does not likely exceed 25 miles. The sill is intrusive into early Precambrian greenstones and associated sedimentary rocks. The chromite discoveries have been made at several localities on both limbs of the sill, and in each case at the same geological horizon. The sill comprises an upper layer of hornblende gabbro and a lower layer of serpentinized peridotite, and altogether is from 500 to 3,500 feet thick. The chromite zone is within and near the top of the peridotite layer, and thus about midway of the sill, both of the limbs of which stand nearly vertical. This geological relationship was established early in the exploration of the initial discoveries and served as the basis for successful predictions of later discoveries. The chromite zone probably persists throughout the length of the sill, but its width and chromite content are not everywhere the same. The initial exploration along both limbs of the sill has shown a combined total length of about 12,000 feet of chromite ore varying in width from 6 to 12 feet. In many places the overburden is thick and obscures the continuity of the chromite zone; but as investigation proceeds the known deposits will be extended and new ones will be found. Thus, although a total length of 12,000 feet of ore has been investigated up to the present time, there is an indicated length of approximately 31,000 feet along which the ore is more than 4 to 5 feet wide. This estimate is based on geological considerations and represents a total tonnage in the order of 15,000 tons per vertical foot of depth.

The cobalt production of the Chemical Metallurgical Division of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited was supplemented, from May, 1962, to June, 1964, by processing 3,500 tons of a calcined cobalt-nickel concentrate. This paper describes the reduction roast -aqueous sulphuric acid leach process and the operating practices employed in recovering cobalt, nickel and copper from this oxidized by-product of a lead-copper operation. Incorporated in this paper is a description of how this process was integrated with the existing ammonia leach -hydrogen reduction process for the recovery of nickel and with the soluble cobaltic ammine process for the recovery of cobalt. Introduction T HE Chemical Metallurgical Division of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, has recently completed ten years of operation utilizing the ammonia leach process for the recovery of nickel, cobalt and copper from sulphide concentrates, matte and other materials amenable to this process. A continuing development program, along with the expansion of certain facilities, has enabled the refinery to attain a production rate of 31, 000,-000 pounds of nickel per year by hydrogen reduction. This represents an increase of approximately 85 per cent over the original design capacity of the plant.

"In February 1980, Dome Mines Limited announced a $50 million expansion program which would result in a 50% increase in mill capacity from the present 1,815 tonnes per day to an eventual production rate of 2, 720 tonnes per day in the year 1984. As an integral and necessary part of this planned expansion, a new vertical production shaft, No. 8 Shaft, would be sunk from surface to a depth of 1,645 metres.Throughout the seventy-year history of mining at the Dome, gold has been found in a number of different rock types and in association with a number of different structural settings. However, the key to successfully locating ore deposits lies in the recognition of the favourable environments in which they generally occur. First and foremost, the exercise of locating the No. 8 shaft became an exercise in geological deduction based on the projection of these favourable lithologic environments.In November 1980, after detailed engineering work was completed, the total cost of the project was estimated at $75.5 million 1980 dollars or $91 million dollars allowing for inflation over a four-year construction period. These estimates include the shaft, significant replacement and alterations to the milling process, and an upgrading of the plant."

"In early 2014, Pan American Silver Corp. commenced a project to construct a second shaft at its La Colorada underground mine located in Zacatecas State in Mexico. This was the first new shaft development project undertaken by Pan American Silver in the history of the company. The existing mine workings permitted the use of a raise bore for the excavation of the shaft opening, utilizing directional drilling in poor ground conditions to advance the pilot hole. This was an interesting project with many challenges and successes, and numerous lessons learned. The project was successfully completed in 2016, with the shaft operating at full mine production capacity within weeks. INTRODUCTION The La Colorada Mine has a long history dating from at least the 1920’s. The mine is located in the northern portion of Zacatecas State in Mexico in the Chalchihuites area, an approximate two hour drive south from the city of Durango. Pan American Silver acquired the La Colorada mining concessions in 1998, with mine production at that time consisting of only a few hundred tonnes per day. Over the course of the following 15 years, with the addition of an oxide processing plant and some expansions to the sulphide processing plant and site infrastructure, production was eventually increased to a maximum of 1,250 tonnes per day, all of it generated from conventional cut-and-fill stopes in the underground mine. An existing shaft was used to hoist the ore to surface, and over the years Pan American Silver had deepened the shaft and had changed out some of the hoisting plant. However, there were historic workings in close proximity to the shaft that made it unsuitable for personnel transport, and shaft maintenance was becoming difficult. The shaft was increasingly considered as a risk to the long term production continuity, and also to further deepening of the mine. In addition, expanding the capacity of this old shaft was not possible. Drilling of the La Colorada mineralization at depth commenced in 2010, with very good exploration success. As a result, by the end of 2013, the mine reserves had grown to a total of 6.5 million tonnes of high grade ore (388 g/t Ag, 0.36 g/t Au, 2.4 % Zn, and 1.3% Pb). Furthermore there were more (and higher grade) sulphide reserves than oxide reserves at depth. Following the completion of an internal study in 2013 with assistance from one of the international shaft contractors, a decision was made to increase the production from the mine with the construction of a new shaft and a new sulphide processing plant, a project with a calculated payback of 2.2 years."

"Edward Haycock, Engineer and Public Contractor Edward Haycock was born in Shrewsbury, England, June 14, 1813. His father was John Haycock, a timber merchant and soap manufacturer, residing at Swan Hill Court, Shrewsbury, and his mother Esther was the daughter of William Hilton of Hempstead, Hertfordshire. Edward's paternal grandfather, John Hiram Haycock, was the first of a line of architects that ""changed the face of Shrewsbury"" and ""provided some of the best examples of typical Victorian architecture in Shropshire""(1). Nothing is known of Edward's early life or education, although it appears that he made no attempt to follow this artistic trend. In 1833, Edward immigrated to Canada. The following year, he married Mary Butler, daughter of Johnson Butler, a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Lincoln Militia during the War of 1812. Mrs. Haycock, as co-heiress of Johnson Butler's estate, was assigned 600 choice acres of farmland in Brooke Township near present-day Sarnia. This alone would have guaranteed a tidy income, but the Haycocks soon disposed of this land, the last lots being sold in May 1840. Instead, Haycock turned his hand to engineering and, for a number of years, was employed by the Great Western Railway first in Woodstock and later in Hamilton. He then moved to Port Hope, tried farming, worked in the engineering office of the Port Hope, Lindsay and Beaverton Railway Company, and later constructed a portion of this railway(2). During his stay in Port Hope, Haycock met his future partners Ralph Jones, a contractor, and Thomas Curtis Clarke, chief engineer with the P.H.L. and B. Railway Company. The alliance was styled Jones, Haycock and Company and their most successful venture was the construction of the Government Buildings in Ottawa. This work was the crowning achievement of Haycock's career and, no doubt, his proudest moment was at 11:30 a.m., April 2, 1860, when his daughter Mary Emily, then a little girl of 4, with a special silver trowel ceremoniously laid the first stone. Of special interest in this project were the quarrying operations, which introduced Haycock to the art and difficulties of mining as well as to the potential returns of mines. Sandstone, for facing, was drawn from four quarries, 10 to 12 miles from the Departmental Buildings. Haycock seems to have been in charge of these operations, which in the early stages involved an average labour force of 86 men and 43 teams. However, by 1861, quarrying had declined in importance and the contractors were able to concentrate whole-heartedly on the construction site."

Present conventional techniques for primary steelmaking in both integrated and non-integrated plants are outlined. 'Direct reduction' alternatives are reviewed and categorized according to the nature of the product produced, with particular emphasis on the limited number designed to yield steel as the end product. A proposed new technique, referred to as the Sherwood Process, is described in some detail as a new combination of selected features from the prior technology. This process is in-tended to realize, in integrated operations, the result of continuons steelmaking directly from the ore in a single plant and, in non-integrated operations, continuons steel-making from a metallic charge of scrap, sponge iron or pig iron. Prominent features are continuons processing in elongated, horizontal, rotary furnace equipment, controlled direct heating of each process stage and, for the over-all integrated process, a size separation for removal of excess solid reductant and other waste just prior to the melting step. Material and energy balances are presented as well as exemplary cost data. Reasons for selecting this particular combination of process elements are dis-cussed.

"IntroductionGENERALLY, the necessity for mining coals of higher impurity content, the drive for lower costs by intensive mine mechanization, changing market requirements, and the increasing competition of oil and natural gas, have continued to result in an upward rise in coal preparation, and have necessitated a more intensive study of coal preparation problems.Increasing adoption of •continuous mining equipment, for example, is introducing new problems in coal preparation. Limited experimental work in the United States (1) shows that the effect of the continuous miner on size distribution varies with the characteristics of the seam. In some seams, the fines problem is lessened, in others it is greatly aggravated. Generally there is a decrease in the relative amount of the top sizes (plus 2 in.) and a substantial increase in the intermediate sizes (down to about 1/8 in.). Contrary to expected results•, where continuous miners with vertical-moving cutting heads are used, an increase in impurities in the slack sizes does not necessarily occur where draw-slate is taken. This is because the draw-slate tends to be kicked out in lump form. However, if a seam contains bands •and lenses of impurities they are bound to be in the mined product."

WE associate metals with hardness, toughness, and strength. But a curious paradox lies at the root of the valuable mechanical proper-ties of the metallic state: in order to be strong, a metal must be weak. This paradox, and the equally surprising fact that, in a sense, metals are not true solids at all, are among the topics here discussed by Sir Lawrence Bragg. (1) WHAT METALS MEAN TO US We employ various materials to build or fabricate the many objects we use in everyday life, choosing those whose properties are most suitable for the purpose which the object has to serve. Certain of these materials have been used from the earliest times, such as stone, wood, leather, and animal or vegetable fibres, each with its own peculiar valuable properties. Stone resists crushing and is very durable and permanent, as indeed it must be, since it has so long resisted change as a part of-the earth's crust. It is there-fore ideal for walls and buildings, and very early in his history man discovered how to make artificial stones by burning clay, with the advantage that they could be given any desired shape, and made into bricks or given elaborate forms as pottery. Wood is strong and tough and light, it resists tension as well as compression, and is nor brittle like stone. It forms beams and furniture and parts of tools or weapons. Leather is tough but at the same time iris flexible; it is ideal as straps or sheers. Vegetable fibres such as linen or cotton, and animal fibres such as wool and silk, owe their value to their flexibility and strength in resisting extension. They can be spun into yarn or rope, and woven into cloth. The technological age in which we are now living is replacing the natural products used by early man by a series of artificial products, but it is remarkable to see how in nearly every case we are copying Nature's materials. The wide use of concrete represents a developed art of making artificial stone. Artificial fibres such as rayon or ?nylon replace cotton, wool, and flax. Plastics are coming very much to the fore; they correspond to early man's use of horn, another substance with peculiar properties of roughness in all directions without the 'grain' of wood. For the most part we are following in the footsteps of our remote ancestors, though we can make for ourselves what they had to cull from wood and field. There are exceptions; for instance, we have discovered comparatively recently the number of uses to which natural rubber can be put, and are now making it artificially. This is a really new discovery; our ancestors had nothing with such remarkable powers of elastic stretching without breaking, and resistance to being abraded.

Introduction This paper will describe the mining plant and underground operations at Quemont. Details of geology and milling are beyond its scope. Papers on these subjects will be prepared and presented separately. A detailed account of the exploration and development, 1944 to 1947, has been given by W. L. Brown (1). Location The mining concessions of Quemont Mining Corporation, Limited, are in Rouyn township, Rouyn-Noranda county, northwestern Quebec. These concessions total about 640 acres in area. They lie within the limits of the City of Noranda, contiguous to, and directly north of, the Horne mine of Noranda Mines, Limited. A large area in the southern part of the property is covered by the north arm of Osisko lake. Production The present operating rate is about 2,100 tons per day. Three flotation concentrates are produced: copper, containing a large proportion of the gold and silver in the ore; zinc; and pyrite, which carries an appreciable additional proportion of gold. The copper and zinc concentrates are shipped to smelters as produced. The pyrite concentrate is cyanided to recover additional gold, after which it is filtered, dried, and shipped for the manufacture of sulphuric acid. The principal revenue metals are copper, gold, and zinc. Silver and pyrite are important by-products.

In 1972, a cooperative program to map and estimate the quantity of Tertiary coal resources in southern Saskatchewan was initiated by the federal and Saskatchewan governments. More than 700 exploratory boreholes were drilled over a two-year period, and data were obtained from other organization s on an additional 1500 boreholes in the area. Stratigraphic data and data on each coal seam penetrated in the boreholes, along with technical and location data for each borehole, were stored in a computer data base for convenience of retrieval, modification and manipulation. Programs and program packages were developed or adapted to: (1) select borehole information defined by variable retrieval parameters from the data base; (2) calculate derived information , such as overburden ratios. cumulative net coal thicknesses , mean weighted center of gravity of coal seams in each borehole, etc., from the selected data ; (3) produce posting maps of either selected data or calculated information in various combinations at variable scales on a plotter or CRT display; (4) produce contoured structure, isopach or ratio maps , and perspective diagrams as appropriate , utilizing plotter or CRT display; (5) calculate and categorize quantities of coal in place within user- defined "mineability-economic-reliability" limits. The emphasis in computer utilization was placed on geological credibility of the results and ease of operation by relatively untrained geological personnel, resulting in extensive use of interactive methods. The single most important benefit derived from using computer-assisted procedures is the ability to produce new maps and quantity estimates rapidly and inexpensively as a result of availability of new data or/and changes in external criteria which impose economic or mineability constraints.

"These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies.REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). This paper describes the results of testwork for the treatment of Ambatovy laterite ore by a pressure acid leach process, with recovery of the soluble nickel and cobalt values as mixed sulphide intermediate by precipitation with hydrogen sulphide, and subsequent refining of the mixed sulphide to nickel and cobalt metals. These process development studies were carried out primarily in 2004, as part of a bankable feasibility study for the Ambatovy Nickel Project. The Ambatovy orebody is located in Madagascar. The mini pilot plant testwork was carried out in the Dynatec metallurgical laboratory in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The results of the testwork were very encouraging, including nickel and cobalt extractions in the range of 95.5% to 97.0%, and 94.0% to 97.0%, respectively, in the ore leach step with sulphuric acid. High recoveries of nickel and cobalt were achieved throughout the remaining process steps, yielding separate nickel and cobalt metal powders with better than acceptable purity.

"Australia is one of the world’s leading exporters of bulk commodities and the extensive use of sampling equipment is key to the successful management of each mining operation. At the process plant, without a full understanding of the feed, product and tails, it is impossible to fully optimise the performance of the plant, such that the metallurgical balance is often open to error. At the port, a statistically correct, bias free and compliant sampling system is crucial to ensuring exported minerals are reflective of their true value and to avoid penalties. Over the last decade, as a result of the iron ore boom, there has been high demand for reliable, representative and standard compliant solids sample systems in Australia. This paper reviews several solids sampling applications at Australian mine sites, the challenges and experience gained and how the implementation of reliable representative sampling systems has provided better understanding of plant process performance, improved plant control and overall benefits to the operations.INTRODUCTION Mining is the primary contributor to the Australian economy with Australia ranking in the top 4 in economic resources for 21 primary industrial minerals in 2016 (Britt, et al., 2017). Australia is one of the world leaders in the export of the majority of its commodities including gold, copper and iron ore (Britt, et al., 2017). Therefore, a suitable and standard compliant sampling system is essential for evaluating plant performance and content verification. At the mine and at the port, the larger iron ore miners in Australia have developed stockpile models to predict the grade of their ore down to individual blocks of the stockpile. This allows the miner to create the right blend of material for sale to their customers and ensures they are not underselling their product or at risk of penalties for impurities or low grade. As an example, the average difference between the benchmark 62% Fe and low grade 58% Fe fines at the time of this report averaged US $30/tonne according to the Metal Bulletin Iron Ore Index. At a shipload of 180kt this would be a variation of US $5.4M. Whilst this is an extreme example, it highlights the economic importance of producing the correct grade product and a recognised representative sample of said product."

Commodity agreements, trade liberalization, producer cartels, the New International Economic Order, price stabilization and access to supply are buzz words of the day. The international concern and dialogue on these concepts, often by a new breed of politically motivated experts, have generated intense interest in seeking an international solution to natural resource problems. While this momentum was maintained during the past year, the growing incidence of protectionist actions by several major nations has been eroding confidence in the global approach. The seriousness of current difficulties has created an urgent need for decisive action. At the same time, the limitations of the global approach have become more evident.

In 1958, the Iron Ore Company of Canada decided to proceed with the Carol Project. The ore deposits in the area are part of the highly metamorphosed southern zone of the Labrador Trough. They lie along the shore of W a bush lake, in the western part of Newfoundland-Labrador, 190 miles north of Sept-Iles. The project is designed to mine, by open-pit methods, 17,200,000 long tons of crude ore, grading 37 per cent iron, per year. This ore will be beneficiated to produce 7,000,000 long tons of concentrate, grading 66 per cent iron, of which 5,500,000 long tons will be pelletized. Production is scheduled to commence this summer. Initially, ore will be taken from 45-foot benches in the Smallwood mine, using jet-piercing production drills and large-scale blasting with "slurry" explosives. Four 13-yard electric shovels will muck the broken ore into 100-ton trailer trucks. The trailers will be hauled to two 2,000-ton loading pockets, which feed the ore into 100-ton railcars. The 1973 Oil Embargo and succeeding disruptions in supply had a profound effect on energy costs and consumption patterns in the developed world. This was especially true in the USA where post World War II growth, fueled by low-cost imported oil, left the country dependent on uninterrupted oil shipments from the volatile Middle East. In this atmosphere, Professor H.H. Kellogg of Columbia University, convinced of the necessity of good environmental stewardship by the writings of the era’s leading environmentalists, developed a methodology for evaluating energy and process efficiency of metallurgical processes and wrote a series of papers describing and applying the techniques. One of these, "Energy Use in Sulfide Smelting of Copper" is recognized as a seminal work which both described the state of energy usage in copper smelting in the mid-1970’s and portended future developments. The background to these papers is examined and the current and past Cu-Ni matte smelting practices in Canada are examined in the context of the results. Data from early 20th century publications describing reverberatory and blast furnace operation is employed to show that energy consumption for much of the century was several multiples higher than that calculated for best reverberatory operation in the 1970’s.
