Recent advances in coring technology and in the development of shipboard and/or in situ geochemical geochemical analysis systems have greatly improved our ability to collect and analyze exploration samples, particularly for marine placer exploration programs. The potential benefit of these improvements cannot be fully realized, however, until we also develop more efficient methods of data reduction and interpretation. Specifically, there is a need to provide prospectors with rapid and useful interpretations of the raw geochemical data so that they can exploit promising results and otherwise optimize the exploration program while the exploration vessel is still at sea. The goal of this project has been to identify and/or develop computer software which is capable of making the necessary data reduction calculations and which can be run on conventional desk-top computers. All work on this project has been supported through a research grant from MMTC-CSD to The University of Michigan. The first stage of this effort involved an evaluation of commercially available (i.e., "off the shelf") software to determine its suitability for use in marine placer exploration applications. Various commercial software packages, each purportedly capable of making different types of statistical and/or mathematical calculations, were tested by evaluating their performance in handling geochemical data sets representative of actual marine placer locations. These data sets include the positions and results of chemical analyses of suites of sediment samples collected from areas of known or suspected marine placers along the Bering Sea coast of Alaska. "Germany, like several other countries, has entered a contract with the International Seabed Authority (ISA) to explore the prospects of commercial manganese nodule mining in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ). Ensuring a maximally sustainable deep-sea mining operation requires a thorough understanding of the environmental impacts associated with every step of the mining process from the extraction of the nodules at the seafloor to the refinery on land. Against this background, the project presented here applies a combination of scenario-building and life cycle assessment (LCA) to assess and evaluate the sustainability performance of the individual process steps as well as the entire mining operation.Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a comprehensive methodological framework that allows the identification and quantification of impacts occurring during a products life-cycle, as well as the analysis and evaluation of their contribution to pre-defined impact categories, such as climate change, acidification and toxicity (Rebitzer et al., 2004). Until now, LCAs with a focus on raw material extraction have almost exclusively been applied to terrestrial processes. Noteworthy exceptions are offshore drilling, offshore wind farms and ocean fishing. Hence, the first part of the project is to investigate in how far LCA can be applied to deep-sea settings and if and in what way it could be adapted to be used in a deep-sea mining context."

India is dependent for 60% of its annual requirement of copper and the entire quantity of nickel and cobalt on imports from outside the country. Land-based resources are either too meager or of too low a concentration for economic exploitation. This has prompted the country to look to deep seabed re- sources for meeting its rising demand for these metals. The Ocean Policy of the Government of India announced in 1982 talks about the need to map and assess the availability of minerals in the deep sea and to develop necessary technologies for exploration and exploitation of seabed minerals. To be self-reliant such technologies would have to be largely developed, tested and operated indigenously. The adoption of the Law of the Sea Convention in 1982 gave a fillip to India's desire to get into the field of deep seabed mining. India applied for recognition as a Pioneer Investor in Ocean Mining in 1983 and received allotment of a mine site of 150,000 km2 in the Central Indian Ocean in August 1987. Simultaneously, the Government has taken up a programme of development of technologies for exploration of the mine site for resource assessment, environmental monitoring also to meet the commitments like relinquishment of 50% of the area to the Preparatory Commission. Technologies for exploitation of these seabed resource like the mining system, transportation and extractive metallurgy have also been taken up for development in various research institutes largely in the government sector. While India's objective in the long term is to meet the shortage of copper, nickel, cobalt and manganese by the turn of the century, in the short term, the programme aims at application of the seabed mining technologies to meet the immediate needs of the country such as: a. Exploration for oil and natural gas. b. Exploration and exploitation of placer minerals and other deposits at shallow depth in India's EEZ.

The report is about oceanic ferromanganese crusts ? covers of iron and manganese hydroxides developed over an opened rock of seamounts and rises. Ore bed parameters of crusts are understandable as their thickness and content of main economic components ? manganese, cobalt and nickel. All known results of research activity on ferromanganese manganese crusts point to that crust are characterized by notable variability of thicknesses and composition. It is possible to separate few levels of variability. The most evident is the first level of parameters variability, which is manifested in various regions of the Ocean, and connected first of all, with an age of submarine mountains, a host objects for a crusts. It was proved by many authors, that most powerful crusts are connected with submarine mountains of Cretaceous age. [1]. Crust thickness at the Magellan Seamounts reaches, for example 12-15 cm, sometimes exceeds 20-22 cm. Thicknesses of Hawaii Archipelago or Tuamotu crusts in 3-4 times less. Biostratigraphy studies of crustal sections at the Magellan Seamounts already show, that its main part started to form in the Late Paleocene. Four layers with well expressed features in structure and composition of a layer are separated in the section. From foot to top: Late Paleocene ? Early Eocene layer I-1, Middle-Late-Eocene layer I-2, Miocene layer II and Pliocene ? Quaternary layer III. Relics of more ancient Campanian ? Maastrichtian ore layer [2, 4] were discovered. It is evident for example, that Oligocene mountains could not be a host for two lower layers in the crust section.

Gas Hydrates (Methane Hydrates) are solid, ice ? like substances composed of water and natural gas. They occur naturally in areas of the world where methane and water can combine at appropriate conditions of temperature and pressure and are found in the ocean bottom sediments and in some permafrost areas. Besides temperature and pressure, factors like bathymetry, sediment thickness, sedimentation rates, and total organic carbon content (TOC) also control gas hydrate formation in the sea. The stability of gas hydrates depends on the critical high pressure ? low temperature combination (0-17 bars, 0-25ºC), which in turn dependent on the mix of gases from which the mineral is formed. As the critical parameters can be altered by deposition, erosion or slumping of sediments, formation or melting of ice cover, rise and fall of sea level and sudden temperature changes induced by tectonic activities, current flows or volcanisms, the gas hydrates tend to be very unstable. It is becoming increasingly evident that naturally occurring gas hydrates are significant component of the shallow geosphere and are of societal concern in at least three major ways: as an energy resource, a geologic hazard and a major contributor for climatic changes.

Exploration for undersea polymetallic sulfide mineral resources with high economic potential would be more effective given an ability to predict sites with particularly high gold contents (averaging say > 10 ppm Au). Herzig et al (1993) addressed this issue shortly after recognition that deposits in the back-arc Lau Basin (average 3.8 ppm Au) were enriched in gold relative to mid-ocean ridge sites (average 1.2 ppm Au). Small but significant numbers of hydrothermal sites with massive sulfide deposits averaging >10 ppm Au have since been discovered. The principal genetic factors underlying gold enrichment include depositional processes at and below the seabed, and the source of gold. It is timely to consider whether resolution of their relative importance can be translated into practical criteria for exploration strategies focused on especially gold-rich deposits. Comparing the ?grade? of seafloor deposits using analyses cited in research papers is fraught with difficulty, but there is no alternative at present to assuming that such averages provide an initial tenor guide. On this basis, four known polymetallic hydrothermal sites from convergent plate margins fit the exceptional-gold category with >10 ppm ?average? Au, while one from a divergent margin comes close: Sunrise (Myojin Knolls; 20 ppm ?average? Au) and Suiyo Seamount (28 ppm Au) in the Izu-Bonin Arc are frontal arc volcanoes dominated by rhyolite and dacite respectively, contrasting with more common mafic neighbor edifices (Iizasa et al., 1999). In both cases gold-rich massive sulfides occur in summit calderas with significant development of pumiceous volcaniclastic rocks, at depths around 1300 and 1370 m respectively. In the Eastern Manus Basin, PACMANUS (~1700 m; 14 ppm Au) and Suzette (~1550 m; 22 ppm Au) occur along the crests of volcanic ridges dominated by dacite/rhyodacite and andesite/mafic dacite respectively (Binns, 2004). Caldera structures are lacking. Although the Eastern Manus Basin is tectonically a rifted back-arc, its submarine volcanic edifices (picritic basalt to rhyodacite) have distinctly arc-style geochemical and isotopic affinities, differing from more typical back-arc basin basalts at the spreading axis further west (central Manus Basin). Probably as a consequence of transpression and a marked rupture in the New Britain subduction zone, submarine arc volcanism has here extended into the rifted back-arc region.

The study of Co-rich manganese crusts has reached the level which allows to start prospecting works in the observable future, and furthermore, probably, exploitation of ore deposits. In this connection, among other goals, the necessity to analyze a distribution of ore bed parameters in details is quite urgent. Foremost, these are crust thicknesses in connection with landforms and elements of submarine mountains relief. This report is based on representative sampling made in course of research cruises run by SSC Yuzhmorgeologiya over guyots of the Magellan Seamounts. Crustal covers could overlie seafloor surfaces which are confined to a various landforms and elements of relief under the condition, that they are free of sediments. These are planed parts of a summit surfaces, edges, spurs, rectilinear parts of slopes, intermountain saddles and volcanic edifices. It is known, that crustal thicknesses are different at a various forms of relief [1]. We processed statistically the data around crustal thicknesses, which were sampled by dredging and submersible drilling (Tables 1, 2).

The Chavara and Manavalakurichi placer deposits have been known since a long time for their rich reserves of heavy minerals like ilmenite, rutile, monazite etc. While detailed work has been conducted on the mineralogy and texture of the bulk placer sediments, reports on the detailed investigations on individual minerals are relatively scanty. Though, limited work pertaining to the chemistry of ilmenite has been carried out by Nair et al (1995) and Ramakrishnan et al (1997), a comprehensive study of the weathering patterns of ilmenite along the longitudinal and vertical profiles has not been, so far, undertaken. Data on the microscopic analysis of ilmenite from the southwest placers, too, is sketchy. The present work deals with the variation of the weathering undergone by ilmenite in the southwest placer deposits based on chemical and mineralogical analyses.

Recent research both on active and fossil systems has demonstrated that shallow subseafloor replacement processes are not only viable depositional mechanisms for massive sulfide mineralization, but likely contributed as a major component of the mineralization occurring in large VHMS deposits and in many present-day seafloor hydrothermal systems. In the giant Neves Corvo deposit, as in many others VHMS deposits of the Iberian Pyrite Belt, there is overwhelming evidence for silicate-sulfide replacement processes being largely responsible for the efficiency of the ore-forming systems and huge size of the deposits. Textural evidences at all scales, coupled with a well-constrained mass-balance geochemical analysis, indicate that extensive replacement in the lavadominated volcanic rocks of the footwall sequence, and disseminated replacement mineralization in the volcaniclastic and/or sedimentary units were major mechanisms of ore formation in the Neves Corvo deposit. Shallow metal deposition prior to fluid discharge on the seafloor is likely to play a major role in seafloor massive sulfide mineralization. This premise should be envisaged as critical in evaluating the economic potential of seafloor resources, and should certainly be part of the equation when plans for seafloor mineral exploration missions are drawn.
