This report describes an investigation of the technical feasibility of using a conventional commercial-size (10-ft. i.d.), rotating grate, dry-ash-removal type gas producer to make producer gas from chestnut-size bone anthracite. Test instruments were installed, and some minor changes were made in the equipment to handle the large quantities of materials expected. Extensive tests, lasting about 4 weeks, were planned, using 35 to 50 percent ash chestnut anthracite bone. However, operations were suspended after 8 days when it became apparent that to use this type of fuel satisfactorily substantial changes in equipment and operating procedures would be required. Nevertheless, enough data were obtained to indicate that gas could be produced continuously and routinely from bone coal in this type of producer whenever conditions justified the necessary development work.

Accurate determination of moisture in coals of various ranks has long been a subject of intensive investigation. Excellent reviews of methods developed over many years are given by Brown (9)4/ and, with experimental comparisons, by Goodman, Gomez, and Parry (11). As pointed out in these and other writings, one of the principal difficulties in assigning absolute merit to one or another procedure is the multiplicity of conditions under which water may exist in coal and the difficulties involved in obtaining sharp separation and distinction between these classes. Gauger (10) states: Water recoverable from coal is obtained from the following sources: (1) Decomposition of organic molecules (sometimes called combined water), (2) surface adsorbed water, (3) capillary condensed water, (4) dissolved water, and (5) water of hydration of inorganic constituents of the coal.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature of ash, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions~ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unpre- cedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 400,00 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country's oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the be- ginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million bar- rels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but pro- duced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation's petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. ce World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum prod- ucts has become the order of the day every day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has been increased enough to meet domestic require- ments by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the over-all daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 50 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields - having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly or perhaps more rapidly than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each, were discovered and proved - an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year's supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the num- ber of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. "Electron spin resonance (ESR) spin trapping methodology has been used to study the reactions of manganese dusts with glutathione, employing a-{4-pyridyl-1-oxide)·N-tert-butyl-nitrone (PBN) and 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) as spin traps. The results show evidence for the glutathionyl radical formation in the reactions of both MnO2 and manganese (Ill) acetate with glutathione. Based on these experimental observations, we hypothesise that the mechanism of neurotoxic effects of manganese might be due to the fact that the generation of glutathionyl radicals depletes the glutathione pool and reduces the glutathione shield against free radical products of dopamine metabolism and manganese induced reactive oxygenated species. IntroductionExposure to manganese compounds often occurs as the result of foundries and mining operations (1. 2). Other significant sources of environmental manganese include coal-fired power plants and burning of residual and crude oil (3, 4). Lately gasoline combustion has also started to contribute since manganese (methyl cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl. 0. 125 g/gallon) is being used instead of lead as an antiknock ingredient in automobile fuels (5. 6). Although manganese is an essential element in certain biological processes it is toxic in excessive amounts. The manganese toxicity is mainly associated with the nervous system (7-9). Symptoms frequently observed in manganese poisoning or manganism are disorientation, memory loss, anxiety, compulsive laughing and crying, mask-like faces, akincsia rigidity and tremor (10). In spite of numerous investigations to understand the mechanism of manganese induced injury. it has not been possible to localize the initial chemical lesion responsible for altered physiology and ultimate cell death. This may perhaps he the reason for failure in developing a successful therapy for manganese intoxication."

There is presented below the results of experiments made on six samples of Utah coals furnished through the U. S. Bureau of Mines , under an agreement dated June 16th , 1920. The details of all values for all runs are tabulated and presented herewith . Clear The samples, consisting of approximately 150 pounds each, were received at the University of Illinois , on June 15 , 1920 , and are listed as follows : Creek , Wattis , Castle Gate , King , Standard , and Aberdeen . The proximate and ultimate, analyses of the various ccals from that region , representing all the types included in these samples , have already been made by the Bureau of Mines , and are available . * Similar determinations were also made on the particular samples forwarded for purposes of these experiments . The results obtained on the coal as received did . not very in any material feature from the values reported by the Bureau, they are shown in Table 1. It is of importance to note only that the oxygen content is uniformly high , namely approximately 9.5 to 11.5 per cent of the as- received coal , while the oxygen - hydrogen ratio is also high, being on the average approximately 2 ( oxygen) to 1 ( hydrogen) .

A quick-reaction, mine permissible rescue vehicle (MERV) was developed for use by rescue teams. The MERV is a 6-wheeled, battery-powered unit with life support equipment and instrumentation; designed for a two-man team, with provisions for handling two victims or tools in a trailer. The vehicle is 100 inches long, 56 inches wide, and maximum height of 34 inches. It can be lowered down most mine shafts and has clearance to travel mine railways. The vehicle has power to all six wheels with power transmitted separately to either or both sets of wheels. Low-pressure, high-traction tires give the vehicle the ability to handle soft, muddy mine floors, flooded areas and significant obstacles, and can negotiate a 45% grade. Power and life support are sufficient for a 4-hour mission. The life support system is a commercially-available, approved unit currently used by MESA rescue personnel. A payout wire system provides communication between the vehicle and home base over a distance of 10,000 feet. On-board monitoring of carbon monoxide, methane and oxygen is provided, with master and individual alarms to warn of gas concentrations outside pre-set limits. A lightweight, water-tight trailer was developed for carrying victims or hauling tools and equipment.

The purpose of this research contract was to develop and test a Saran latex modified portland cement concrete lagging to be used as a replacement for wood lagging. The scope of work performed was divided into four phases: Phase I - Engineering Criteria; Phase-! I1 - Design Study; Phase III - Fabrication of Lagging; and Phase IV - Prototype Demonstration Project. Each phase of work was completed and is described in detail in this report. The prototype latex modified concrete lagging developed in this program weighed 52 pounds. When tested in flexure, it supported center point loading of 4500 pounds and under 1/4 point loading it supported loadings of 7000 pounds. Deflections at maximum loading ranged from 1/2 to 1 inch. Maximum deflections exceed 2 inches. The lagging does not exhibit catastrophic failure. Two hundred and twenty of the LMC lagging were produced and shipped to the Bunker Hill Company in Kellogg, Idaho for installation in their mine at the 17 level. The lagging are performing satisfactory after 22 months exposure in the mine.

Public awareness of, and involvement in, recycling has increased significantly in recent years. Nevertheless, recycling is generally perceived as a new development, and is familiar only in the context of municipal solid waste management. The actual magnitude and scope of metals recycling in the United States have gone virtually unnoticed. Over time, both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of secondary metals recovery and reuse have changed substantially, while the attendant regulations have become increasingly stringent. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report examines trends and developments in major metal demand and recycling, and analyzes the possible impacts of regulations with regard to recycling activities.

"Agglomeration processes and agglomerate characteristics are largely controlled by the forces of interaction between particles. The nature and typical magnitude of these interaction forces are evaluated relative to the external forces commonly present in agglomeration systems. The specific roles of the interaction forces in the various stages of agglomerate formation and growth and their effects on the integrity and mechanical strength of agglomerates are briefly reviewed. Because the interaction forces affect different aspects of agglomerate development in different ways, conflicting requirements can arise. Examples of such conflicts are given and used to demonstrate the importance of evaluating the effects of interaction forces etc., in the context of the overall agglomeration process and its ultimate objectives.INTRODUCTIONThe term agglomeration is generally used to refer to processes whereby discrete particles are caused, or allowed, to associate into clumps in which the individual particles retain their identity but are held together by relatively weak, usually physical forces. Various other designations are given to these processes, depending on the specific circumstances under which agglomeration occurs. The terms balling and pelletizing are often used to describe agglomeration in dry or semi-dry powders; coagulation and flocculation are used to refer to agglomeration of particles dispersed in fluids. Common to all of these cases is the fact that the formation, growth and integrity of the agglomerates depend primarily on the forces acting on and between particles. The same forces are, of course, responsible for manyaspects of the behavior of colloidal systems and their study and evaluation constitute the,basis for colloid and interface science.FORCES ACTING ON FINE PARTICLES AND AGGLOMERATES It is convenient to classify the forces acting on and between particles into two general types: external forces and interaction forces. It should he recognized, however, that a sharp distinction is not always possible.External Forces Gravity and inertial forces act on all particles and their magnitude is proportional to particle mass, i.e. they vary with the cube of particle size. Such forces are oftensignificant for large agglomerates but may be negligible for individual, fine particles.Hydrodynamic (""drag"") forces are important, for particles suspended in fluids. For very small particles, the drag force is directly proportional to size (Stokes' Law) while for very large particles or agglomerates it varies with approximately the square of size (Newton's Law). A useful procedure for estimating drag forces over a broad range of particle sizes and physical conditions has been given by Concha (1)."

In connection with the purchase of coal under specifications for Government use, the Bureau of Mines in this report has compiled data on 81 mines located in 15 States. This annual report lists analytical data on the composition and quality of tipple and delivered samples of coal collected during fiscal year 1973. Tipple samples were collected by Bureau of Mines engineers at tipples as coal was being loaded into railroad cars or trucks. Ultimate analyses are given for most of the coalbeds listed. The deliveries were sampled at destination in accordance with instructions issued by the Bureau of Mines. All samples were analyzed in the Bureau laboratory at Pittsburgh.

On November 20, 1968, a massive explosion rocked the underground workings of Mountaineer Coal Co.?s Farmington No. 9 Mine in West Virginia. Of the 99 miners who were working in the mine at the time of the explosion, only 21 survived and escaped the mine. This group included eight who were rescued from the Mahan?s Run air shaft. Nearly 40 years after the event, researchers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted oral history interviews with two of the eight survivors rescued from the shaft. The Farmington No. 9 Mine disaster ultimately led to passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (amended in 1977).

Large areas of the anthracite beds in the Wilkes-Barre, Pa., region have been first-mined in such a manner that over half of the original coal has been left underground as pillars to support the overburden. To recover the maximum amount of this remaining coal, improved devices to support the roof while pillars are being extracted are needed. Also needed are suitable backfilling systems that will stabilize the strata during the mining and effectively limit the inevitable subsidence after pillars are removed. Accordingly, the Federal Bureau of Mines furnished 400 yielding steel props that had been purchased abroad, where this type of prop had been used successfully. The cooperating company arranged for concurrent tests with a mechanical stower designed and built by an American manufacturer. In the area in which the experiments were conducted, pillar removal, using conventional timbering, was most difficult because the roof fractured badly, the installation of timbers consumed a substantial part of the work effort, and some coal nearly always was lost. With the application of the yielding props, the time needed for securing the roof was reduced 33.9 percent; production per man-shift was in¬creased over 33 percent; coal recovery was improved more than 9 percent; and the convergence between roof and floor, during mining and backfilling, amounted to as much as 8.03 inches without any break in the roof. However, in September 1953 some roof rock fell in pillar 10 owing to insufficient props in a small area where the ends of three top holes drilled in the coal face extended up into the roof rock.

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study that incorporates coal mining factors, coal recovery factors, and economic factors into the definition of an economically recoverable coal resource. The relationship between these factors to the Energy Information Administration's estimate of U.S. coal resources-the "Demonstrated Reserve Base"-is discussed. The Boltsfork 7 1/2-minute quadrangle in eastern Kentucky was selected as the study area. Results indicate that of the original 280.2 M tons of resource in the quadrangle, only 99.8 M tons (35.6%) is recoverable at a mining cost of $25 per ton or less.

For melting and purifying reactive and refractory metals , two electronbeam furnaces have been constructed and operated on the principle of highpowered vacuum diodes . It was necessary to design the vacuum and electrical systems , mechanical features , and operating procedures to cope with dynamic conditions . Vacuums of 10-5 torr , tens of kilowatts of power at 5 to 10 kilovolts , and the evolution of impurities at thousands of liters per minute constitute a challenging combination . The furnaces have been used to melt either button specimens weighing several hundred grams or , by feeding material as a consumable electrode , small ingots weighing several kilograms . Hafnium is among the metals that can be purified . For example , hafnium starting material with Rhn 94B was softened to Rhn 70B after 2 hours of melting under a 25 - kw electron beam , and impurity levels were reduced as follows : Oxygen , from 700 to 350 ppm ; nitrogen , from 71 to 20 ppm ; hydrogen , from 6 to 1 ppm ; aluminum from 75 to < 20 ppm ; chromium , from 80 to < 10 ppm ; iron , from 100 to 40 ppm ; and silicon , from 40 to < 20 ppm .

This report describes a process for recovering chromium and other metals from superalloy scrap. Part I contains the results of laboratory scale experiments which were conducted to test a complex flowsheet utilizing a wide range of extractive metallurgical operations. The novel basis for the process is the formation of a sulfide matte in which chromium is concentrated in a discrete chromium sulfide phase. Mineral processing and hydrometallugical procedures are used to separate chromium sulfide from the other matte constituents. The products of the process are a chromium-nickel alloy suitable for reuse in the superalloy industry, electrolytic nickel, electrolytic cobalt, and an iron-molybdenum residue. Recovery of the principal elements contained in the scrap are chromium(Cr)-93 percent, nickel(Ni)-99 percent, cobalt(Co)-96 percent, molybdenum(Mo)-92 percent. Part II encompasses a preliminary engineering design of a pilot plant capable of treating 100 pounds(lb) of superalloy scrap per hour. Also included is an economic analysis of the operation of the pilot plant.

The national mine-safety demonstration at Pittsburgh, Pa., was projected and undertaken in the hope that it would aid the increase of safety in the mining industry. That the national mine-safety demonstration was warranted and has served a useful purpose was evidenced by the attendance, not only at the public demonstration in Forbes Field, but also at the more special exhibit of the work of the Bureau of Mines at the arsenal grounds and at the experimsntal. mine. Nearly 2,000 persons witnessed the demonstrations and exhibits of the Bureau of Mines at the arsenal grounds on the morning of October 30, 1911. The spectators were all mine operators, miners, or persons interested in mining, and represented operations in all parts of the United States. Nearly 1,200 of these persons visited the bureau's experimental mine at Bruceton to witness ~th~explosion of coal dust. Had the weather, which was exceptionally inclement, been more favorable, there would doubtless have been a much larger attendance. At the public demonstration in Forbes Field, which· was witnessed by President Taft, from 12,000 to 15,000 persons, chiefly mining men, were present and attested their interest and enthusiasm in the minesafety exhibits by remaining throughout the proceedings, regardless of the rain which fell all the morning .. Sincethis demonstration, the organization of first-aid corps and of rescue corps has been undertaken at mines where there had previously been no such organizations. The bureau has received letters of commendation attesting the value of the demonstration in drawing· attention to the dangers and to possible means of greater safety in mining. Many of these letters have urged that the results of the demonstration be published for the guidance and instruction of those who were present. In response to these reauests the following account of the mine- BlIIeLY demonstration lias been prepared. IIi its preparation various division and section chiefs of the Bureau of Mines have cooperated. The authors acknowledge the assistance they have received from those section chiefs and other members of the bureau who contributed detailed descriptions of apparatus exhibited at the demonstration or of investigations represented.

Provide a means for reliable in situ stress change measurements in soft, friable geologic materials under high stress. Background Effective mine design requires a knowledge of changes in rock stress generated by a mining operation. In situ stress measurement can provide a means of obtaining this knowledge from an active mine for the ultimate purpose of design verification and analysis. The Bureau of Mines has designed and tested a device for measuring changes in rock stress-the borehole platened flatjack (BPF). It has found application in investigating stress anomalies due to geologic structures, stress concentrations from multiple seam interaction, and stress abutments from pillar retreat and longwall mining.

NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory is currently involved in research to identify silica dust generation in underground metal/nonmetal mines. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop control technologies to reduce worker exposure to respirable silica dust. Commodities and job classifications with the highest silica dust exposure have been identified through analysis of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) compliance dust sampling database. Dust surveys were conducted in an underground limestone and gold mine to investigate silica dust sources, generation levels, and controls being used. A summary of the mining operations, sampling procedures, resulting data, and suggested methods to improve the dust control will be provided.

"INTRODUCTION A commercial-scale pilot plant for gasification of lignite was completed by the Bureau of Mines at Grand Forks, N. Dak., early in 1945 as an extension of work on, gasification of low-rank coals initiated in a smaller pilot plant at Golden, Colo., during 1943. The development work on this plant was part of a program to make reducing gases from lignite for beneficiation of low-grade iron ores. The background of this project has been described in a previous report. 6/ The present report describes the major features of the large pilot plant, a record of experimental operating data during five runs totaling about 1,800 hours, .and results of experimental work on the small pilot plant at Golden during 1945.This project has created considerable interest because heretofore there has been little success in several attempts to gasify American lignites.Furthermore, the methed employed is a departure from conventional processes. Natural lignite is fed continuously into an externally heated annular retort and is converted into water gas by heat conducted through alloy metal walls. Because of the high thermal conductivity of metal, the rate of gasification is several times greater than can be obtained when employing refractory walls. The process has been developed to a part that leaves one major question unanswered. - ""How long will the alloy last under practical operating conditions?"" - and this question has aroussed the interest of the Coal Division of the Bureau of Mines in this new development.Owing to the high reactivity of the lower-rank fuels, the water-gas reactions proceed rapidly at medium temperatures of 1,650°F. to 1,800°F. These temperatures can be attained in a reaction zone heated by external means when the temperature of the retort does not exceed 1,900°F. while transferring from 6,000 to 7,000 B.t.u. per hour per square foot. Such rates are several times greater than can be attained through refractory walls as employed in the Didier-Bubaig 7/ and the Ahrens processes. 7/ Therefore, the investment cost of the gas generator per unit of capacity will be considerably lower for the higher-capacity process. However, the maintenance cost of metal vessels will be higher than that of refractory retorts, and this emphasizes the importance of large-scale operation to determine the life of an alloy retort under practical operating. conditions."
