Further, on page 246, "The first area of study was the Josephine peridotite, now identified as an ophiolite terrane, located in northern California and south-western Oregon (Fig. 3). Here, it was felt that we could test the models shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and, if successful, expand the model and test it in other chromite districts in the US and around the world." My comments refer only to chromite deposits in Europe and the Middle East. First, I question that may chromite deposits occur in the idealized ophiolite section shown in Fig. 1. Second, although some podiform deposits (referring to morphology) have been important (Guleman, Turkey, for example), the stratiform deposits are of greater importance in tonnage and frequently grade. Examples include Nada, Yugoslavia; Bulqiza, Albania; Xerolivado, Greece; Saranovsk, Russia; and Abdasht, Iran. Reply by J.C. Wynn Mr. Hillebrand raises two issues that deserve a serious response. One issue is basically subjective and the other is ultimately political. First, the question of where (and how many) podiform chromite deposits are found in the idealized ophiolite section of Dickey (1975). The Dickey model is still perhaps somewhat controversial (Panayoutou, 1980), but our experience in the Josephine ophiolite of northern California (Wynn, 1980; and Albers, 1983) shows that the model works well there. Virtually all the chromite is found in dunite lenses in the tectonite peridotite (harzburgite). Since there are few complete ophiolites exposed in the world, the model will probably never satisfy everyone. The degree of acceptance is a function of any individual's subjective experience. Second, it is well known that stratiform chromite contributes more than 95% of the chromite reserves presently known in the world, and it could be reasonably argued that there is no point in exploring for or exploiting podiform deposits further. The title of the paper, however, was in part 'strategic minerals geophysical research'; chromite is considered a strategic and critical mineral of the US and many other industrialized nations. Stratiform deposits in South Africa and Zimbabwe account for most of the chromite reserves in the world. Unfortunately, experience in modern times with substantial price fluctuations and even resource cartels dictates the wisdom of identifying and maintaining a national chromite reserve, irrespective of the cost. An improved exploration methodology is an essential element in this strategic objective. Porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern Pacific area represent relative newcomers to the growing number of occurrences of this mineral deposit type. In addition to firmly establishing the importance of this region and its potential influence within the framework of world copper resources, the deposits of this region are significant from a scientific point of view because of their close relationship to the phenomena of Island Arc evolution. Since the discovery of Panguna on Bougainville in 1964, the list of prospects, proven and unproven, and developments, has grown to more than twenty and the number continues to increase. At the time of this writing, the number of prospects is imperfectly known but the following localities and numbers are fair minimum approximations: Manus (Admiralty Islands) (3); New Britain (5); New Ireland (1); Guadalcanal (2); New Guinea Highlands (6); Misima (1); and Fiji (2); Proven prospects are present in the new Guinea Highlands (2); one deposit is being developed in Test Irian, and one orebody, on Bougainville, is in production. This summary paper concerns a discussion of some of the geological characteristics of producers, developments, and prospects on the Islands of Nets Guinea, New Britain, Bougainville, Guadalcanal, and Manus. I am not aware of publishable data for Misima or Fiji. As so many variables ultimately determine whether or not a porphyry copper occurrence becomes an orebody, not the least of which is geography, this summary treats the characteristics of these occurrences which alloy; their assignment to the porphyry copper category. For purposes of this discussion, I have considered those copper occurrences which are apparently genetically related to talc-alkaline intrusions and in which the content of copper has been upgraded 50 to 100 times the Clarke for that particular host rock. Some of these occurrences are shown on Figure 1.

Perlite is an altered rhyolitic glass with 2 to 5 wt % water that expands or "pops" when heated quickly to plasticity while evolving steam to form lightweight, glass foam. Commercial perlite deposits in New Mexico are well-developed zones of chemical weathering (hydration) superimposed on highly permeable and thick glassy zones at the chilled upper surface and toes of high-silica-rhyolite lava flows and lava domes. The maximum tonnage of glass in these volcanoes was predetermined by their unique eruptive histories. New Mexico perlite production (80% of US production of 571,00 st) is mostly from the 3.9 Ma high-silica-rhyolite lava flows at the No Agua Peaks volcanic center. The primary vent at No Agua is defined by a 900 ft-high rubidium-rich composite lava dome, known as West Peak, that contains minor perlite reserves. Slightly less rubidium-rich lava squeezed out from under the west flank of the dome to form relatively thin (250 ft) but highly vesicular lobate flows that now consist of about 50 % recoverable perlite. Finally, rubidium-poor lavas were extruded from a radial dike on the northeast flank of the dome. These thicker (400 ft) flow lobes contain about 20 % recoverable perlite. The largest mass of lava does not always contain the most perlite. The thinner (west) flow at No Agua yields the largest perlite reserves rather than the large composite lava dome or thicker (east) flow.

An industrial minerals review involves an attempt to assemble field and statistical data which are obscure, elusive and incomplete. Often, when me statistical data are available, combining or lumping of commodity values conceals the value of specific items. Personal knowledge of the minerals known to occur in the area of concern, combined with whatever available published data may be compiled, together with careful use of several extrapolation methods, may yield an acceptable summary review of the industry. However, it is particularly hazardous to speculate on future trends and economic aspects because of the many unpredictable variables which may affect the industrial minerals business. Among these variables are the effects of diverse geological conditions, the impact of technological changes (including new uses for minerals not formerly considered industrial types), changing socio-economic factors (including growing environmental controversy), use of substitutes and even recycling of some of the industrial minerals (for example, building materials, lime, etc.). My main objectives are to reveal, as accurately as I can, the state of the in¬dustrial minerals situation, and the effects of possible future developments on this industry in Idaho. Where the words...industrial-tyke minerals, .are used in this discussion, reference is made to selected metallic and nonmetallic minerals and related materials, as well as rock (Table I). Industrial minerals known to be present in Idaho may be listed under general use categories as in Table 1. Some of these commodities are being marketed, have been marketed in the past, or occur in potentially marketable quantities. Mineral fuels are neither mentioned, nor are they considered important in Idaho. Based upon our present knowledge and lack of known, economically valuable occurrences of these commodities, they are considered insignificant (Idaho Bur. Mines and Geology, 1964). "The Cerro Verde copper-molybdenum mining complex is located near Arequipa, Peru. A 108,000 t/d copper concentrator (C1 concentrator) commenced operation in late 2006 and was debottlenecked to a 120,000 t/d capacity in 2011. A feasibility study, initiated in May 2010, assessed the potential for expanding the processing rate of the large Cerro Verde sulfide reserve via the installation of a second, stand-alone, concentrator (C2 concentrator) capable of processing a nominal 240,000 t/d ore. The feasibility study was successful and the project advanced through engineering, permitting and construction. Ramp up to nameplate capacity was ahead of schedule. The overall project was completed on schedule and within budget. The details of the project and supporting components are described. The design philosophy and design basis of the concentrator facilities are discussed as are factors that influenced the concentrator layout. Risk mitigation features included in the design are reviewed. The factors that drove the successful and rapid ramp up to nameplate capacity are discussed. Operational experiences in the first year of plant operation and project lessons learned are described. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. (SMCV) operates a copper mine near Arequipa in southern Peru. Small scale operations operated intermittently until 1970 when the deposit reverted to the ownership of Minero Perú S.A (Peruvian government). Minero Perú S.A. commenced mining and processing of oxide reserves in 1972 and placed an SX-EW plant into production in 1976. The ownership of the property has changed hands several times over the years. Minero Perú sold Cerro Verde to Cyprus Climax Metals in 1994. Cyprus was acquired by Phelps Dodge in 1999. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) acquired Phelps Dodge in 2007. Several studies were undertaken during the 1990’s that tried to establish the economic justification to process the large primary sulfide resource that underlies the surface oxide deposit. None of these studies produced an economic conclusion until a feasibility study was completed by Phelps Dodge and SMCV in 2004. This study provided the economic justification for the construction of a 108,000 t/d concentrator during 2005 and 2006. The key to the success of this study was identifying a water source that was sufficient to support processing economies of scale. Concentrator operations commenced in late 2006. The original design production rate of 108,000 t/d was achieved on a 30 day moving average basis on the 266th day after ore was first introduced. During 2009, studies and evaluations were performed that had the objective of addressing observed concentrator bottlenecks to allow a production rate of 120,000 t/d to be achieved. The 120,000 t/d figure represents the sustainable production limits associated with the installed primary crusher and tailing thickeners which would have been prohibitively expensive to upgrade. Debottlenecking activities were implemented during 2010 allowing sustained production rates of 120,000 t/d to be achieved."

For more than sixty years the rich oil shale formations of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming have been evaluated as a future source of petroleum. After many false starts the commercial production of shale oil is near. Union Oil and Colony (Exxon and Tosco) have begun construction of commercial plants. Occidental and Rio Blanco (Gulf and Standard of Indiana) are well along in the development of modified in situ (underground) processes. A number of other companies and groups are in advanced stages of development. This paper will review some of the major elements involved in the production of shale oil with emphasis on means available to express the efficiency of production of pyrolysis liquids and gases from oil shale rock.

Methane gas is emitted during both underground and surface coal mining. Underground coal mines need to monitor methane gas emissions to ensure adequate ventilation is provided to guarantee that methane concentrations remain low under different production and environmental conditions. Prediction of methane concentrations in underground mines can also contribute towards the successful management of methane gas emissions. The main objective of this research is to develop a forecasting methodology for methane gas emissions based on time series analysis. Methane time series data were retrieved from atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) of three underground coal mines in the USA. The AMS data were stored and pre-processed using an Atmospheric Monitoring Analysis and Database Management system. Furthermore, different statistical dependence measures such as cross-correlation, autocorrelation, cross-covariance, and variograms were implemented to investigate the potential autocorrelations of methane gas as well as its association with auxiliary variables (barometric pressure and coal production). The autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) time series model which is based on auto-correlations of the methane gas is investigated. It is established that ARIMA used in the one-step-ahead forecasting mode provides accurate estimates that match the direction (increase/decrease) of the methane gas emission data.

Since 1882, world zinc production has increased. In contrast, United States zinc production rose until about 1915, but since then has remained nearly constant, with a slight tendency to decrease. Production from the Tri-State district, the largest early source of zinc in the United States, has gone down steadily; this decline has been balanced by a growth in the rate of other districts. These changes in United States production are due to economic, not geological, factors. Recent exploration has located large mineable ore bodies; additional deposits will undoubtedly be found in the strata-bound carbonate rock and volcanogenic environments. A statistical analysis of the exploration effort in the Middle Tennessee district indicates that new discoveries can be expected there. Thus, the United States is in an early stage of the production cycle for zinc. Of major mining districts in the United States, only the Tri-State is exhausted under current economic conditions; large zinc resources of low-grade material, which would repay mining at higher prices or improved technology, are known to exist in that district.

The justification for a "ligand- selective' approach to fine mineral beneficiation via flocculation is established initially. Special emphasis is placed upon the need to identify non-selective, interfering and complicating adsorption effects. Specific strategies directed towards the design and synthesis of complementary selective flocculants are detailed using a number of different polymers and chelating agents as examples. In this regard, the affinity of polymer-bound ligands for metallic cations, ligand concentration, possible modes of attachment, the application of spaced-out ligands and other considerations in the preparation of selective flocculants are highlighted.

Construction of Flaming Gorge Dam in northeastern Utah necessitated the construction of a new state highway, Utah-260, to provide access to the dam and the town of Dutch John. A 550-foot arch structure was designed to span Cart Creek, about one mile southwest of the dam. The rock exposed at the site is highly fractured quartzitic sandstone with interbedded shale of the Precambrian Uinta Mountain Group. Eight exploratory holes were drilled, four in each abutment area, to determine rock types, the extent of fracturing at depth and rock strength. Drill cores in the west abutment revealed blocks of quartzitic sandstone loosened by the weathering and partial removal of underlying shale beds. The rock in the east abutment area was found to be highly fractured to depths of 70 feet and as far east as 50 feet from the footing locations. Selected core sections were tested for unconfined compressive strength but the values were not considered-representative of the in-situ fractured rock. To prevent movement along or, perpendicular to open fractures, four drilled-in columns were provided at the base of each footing. These extended 50, feet beyond the base of the footing, along the bearing and inclination of the thrust reaction.

This article presents a customized genetic algorithms (GA) with new crossover and mutation operators to solve the short-term production scheduling problem of multi-mine mineral value chains (MVC). The preceding problem consists of determining the extraction sequence and destination allocation of blocks from all the mines collaboratively while closely meeting the quality and quantity requirements of the processing units subject to relevant technical and operational constraints. The short-term production scheduling is carried out at shorter scales wherein the operations are modeled in a great detail with large number of constraints. This makes the industry-scale instances of the problem computationally intractable for standard mixed-integer programming (MIP) solvers. Thus, a GA-based heuristic approach is developed to obtain nearoptimal solutions to the large-scale instances of the problem in a reasonable amount of computational time. Computational experiments show that the developed GA-based method is a promising way to handle industry-scale instances of the problem. Moreover, the sensitivity analysis on various parameter combinations of crossover and mutation operators indicates that the customized global mutation operator, when used in combination with the customized crossover operators, took on average 12.5% less time than the customized local mutation operator to converge to a solution.

Coal and coal combustion byproducts are potential candidates for alternative resources of REEs (rare earth elements). The Illinois Basin is a major coal-producing district in the USA, but little work is available on speciation of REEs in the basin’s coals. In this study, a total number of 382 samples from known locations in the Illinois Basin coal beds were acquired, analyzed for their REE contents, and investigated for any spatial trends or chemical correlations. This study includes Springfield, Herrin, and Baker coal beds—the most heavily mined coals in the basin. An average coal ash from the basin contains 320 ppm REE, with Baker being the highest (407 ppm on average). However, the distribution of REEs in the coal beds was laterally and vertically heterogeneous. A number of trends were found in the REE variations. The most important trend was the relationships of the REE concentrations and fractionations with the distance from the syndepositional sandstones. The total REE concentrations were higher in the proximity of the sandstones, likely due to the increased deposition of detrital material. This increase was the most significant in Springfield coal (90%) and least in Baker (6%). Those coal samples from the Springfield and Herrin coal beds distal from the syndepositional sandstones had a heavy to light REE ratio (H/L ratio) of 0.40 on average, whereas in proximal locations, the ratio was dropped to an average of 0.30. This trend was not significant in the Baker coal bed. In general, higher mineral matter in the coals was associated with higher REEs. In coal preparation plants, refuse rocks can have up to 360 ppmREE. However, the ashes of the cleanest coals had higher REE levels. Such ashes also have a higher ratio of heavy to light REEs. The highest REE concentrations were found in the claystones and the shales associated with the coal beds. Since the naturally occurring calcite, quartz, and pyrite samples were depleted in REEs, an association of REEs with the clay minerals can be suggested.

This biography is the story of his lifetime of study, work experiences, experimentation, analyses and findings. His numerous published writings are reviewed. His legacy is one of comminution process engineering that will be used in perpetuity.

The Manapouri Power Project is located in New Zealand's South Island Fiordland. The project is being constructed for the New Zealand Ministry of Works. Construction began in 1963 and is scheduled' for completion in 1969. The project will divert water from the natural, glacially carved Lake Manapouri, at Elevation 580, through vertical- penstocks into an underground powerhouse 364 feet long, 127 feet high, and 59 feet wide excavated about 700 feet below ground surface and about 560 feet below the present lake level. The possible ultimate power installation will produce 700 megawatts from turbines located in the underground machine hall. The turbine flow will discharge through the 6-mile, 30-foot diameter tailrace tunnel into a fiord arm of the Tasman Sea. The rocks in the project area are primarily Paleozoic Fiordland Complex gneiss, schist, amphibolite, and marble intruded by granitic rocks and pegmatite. Shear zones have been encountered in the tunnels and machine hall. These produce water and occasionally require steel support. The machine hall arch was stabilized entirely by rock bolt reinforcement. Rock mechanics instrumentation has been used throughout the project both for pre-construction design calculations and to monitor tunnel rock loads and movements of the machine hall roof and walls. About 28 miles of the 100-mile transmission line will be constructed across glacially oversteepened slopes and debris or swamp filled valleys between the power plant and the eastern edge of the mountainous area. Steep glacially carved rock slopes and locally unstable glacial till complicated construction of the transmission line access roads.

Minerals Appraisers/Valuers often find great difficulty or failure in attempting to employ the Sales Comparison Approach to the Market Value Appraisal of development and operating stage mineral properties. An important factor generally overlooked is a comparison of net operating income (NOI) margins on a per-unit-of-production basis between mineral properties, whether these be demonstrated or forecast margins. NOI margins can vary greatly between mines or quarries that are producing similar products. Ultimately, the expected NOI margin determines what a buyer is willing to pay for an income producing property. Common criticisms of the sales comparison approach by minerals appraisers are introduced. These are counterbalanced by raising some issues in the way the inputs for the Income Approach are usually derived by minerals appraisers, and by review of some conspicuous examples of the much too common misuse or abuse of the income approach in market value minerals appraisals. Example transaction analyses and sales comparison analyses are used to demonstrate the author?s methodology for adjusting units of resource in his transaction adjustment tables (see APPENDIX). The examples are used as the basis for discussion of ways to employ adjustments for operating economics and many other factors, while cautioning about the potential for double counting. The conclusions include a recommendation that minerals appraisers attempt to apply at least two of the three valuation approaches when appraising the market or fair value of development and operating stage mineral properties, the two being the sales comparison and income approaches.

Although rates of pneumoconiosis in coal miners have declined substantially in the United States since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, new cases continue to occur, including cases of rapidly progressive disease. In contrast, Australia?s underground coal mining industry has reported few new cases of pneumoconiosis for over twenty years. Mortality from Coal Workers? Pneumoconiosis in official health statistics and the prevalence of pneumoconiosis among miners screened in x-ray surveillance programs are also lower in Australia. To understand this disparity, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health was requested by both industry and labor stakeholders to examine this issue, with the ultimate aim of reducing the rate of pneumoconiosis among United States coal miners. A number of factors, including coal dust exposure, silica exposure, and coal rank were examined as potential contributors to the above observed differences. Comparison of coal rank data from each country did not show any significant differences. Air sample data from the coal mining industries in both countries show that coal dust levels in Australian mines are somewhat higher than those reported in similar U.S. mines; however, quartz exposure for Australian miners is lower than for many U.S. miners. Assuming that quartz is contributing to the greater number of cases of advanced pneumoconiosis in the U.S., more effective dust control measures, as well an independent exposure standard for respirable quartz in coal mining, need to be implemented to prevent this potentially disabling condition.

Editor's note: The subject of mining on the moon can generate a wide range of strongly held opinion, from those leaning toward the view that, ultimately, such activity is the destiny of mankind to those who believe that all suggestions for moon mining to date are unrealistic, wildly expensive and in the hands of people who 'know nothing.' MINING ENGINEERING herewith publishes some of the basic pros and cons on the subject of moon mining by writers who are among those holding strong views on the subject, with the hope that some of our readers may be interested in joining this debate. Every mineralogist and most mineral industry people were keenly interested in the examinations of the first moon rocks brought back by US astronauts in 1969. Suffice to say that the examinations revealed nothing exotic in the mineral makeup of the very limited rock samples. The rocks were generally of igneous type, dark-colored and contained some common, Earth-type minerals. There was, in Earth terms, above average TiO2 content, but they contained nothing of commercial significance by Earth standards. Therefore, interest in moon minerals rapidly faded. Years later, on Sunday, May 4, 1986, living in Reno, NV, this author was shocked to read a local newspaper article by the Dean of the Mackay School of Mines, University of Nevada, Reno, headlined, "Moon Mining Not Far Off." Considering that the announcement more or less coincided with a slump in our domestic mining industry, the immediate questions in a reader's mind

The risk assessment project examines the likelihood of inorganic contaminants from copper dump-leaching operations to contaminate domestic water supplies. The project examines contaminant transport by modeling contaminant movement from the base of a leach pile through the unsaturated zone and into the saturated zone. The modeling effort is unique in that it models infiltration, contaminant transport in the unsaturated and saturated zone combined with geochemical modeling of the unsaturated zone. The project incorporates probability theory to reflect the uncertainty of hydrogeologic parameters.

Unprotected uranium mill tailings impoundments can pose a significant risk to nearby inhabitants and the surrounding environment in the event of a prolonged or catastrophic release of contaminants contained in the tailings. As a result of this potential, reclamation plans for such facilities must include engineering designs to protect against disruption of the tailings and the potential release of radioactive materials. The goals for such engineering designs should be to provide overall site stability for long-term periods with no need for planned ongoing maintenance and to provide a repository for the tailings that will not place a burden on future generations. Although the goal is to provide a maintenance-free system that does not require monitoring, it must be recognized that some period of surveillance would be reasonable. The surveillance period could be relatively short and only needs to assure with reasonable confidence that the reclamation scheme that was implemented is functioning adequately. An investigation was conducted by Nelson, Volpe, Wardwell, Schumm and Staub (1983) entitled Design Considerations for Long-Term Stabilization of Uranium Mill Tailings Impoundments (NUREG/CR-3397). This report assesses the degree of confidence with which long-term reclamation plans can be expected to remain effective over specific periods of time, and to assess the additional effort required to extend the design period from one long-term period to a longer one. This paper presents a summary of that investigation and discusses some of the important conclusions.
