Most of the world’s production of natural soda ash comes from the mining and processing of trona found near Green River, WY. The processing of trona ores to ultimately yield a high-quality dense soda ash product and reject the insoluble gangue species, primarily in the form of oil shale, is water and energy intensive. It is speculated, however, that the glass-manufacturing industry, which is the largest consumer of soda ash, may be able to use product of a lower grade and consistent level of the insoluble constituents. Thus, the viability of using sensor-based sorting to produce a beneficiated trona stream that would be fed to calcination was investigated. The study encompassed the preparation of a run-of-mine (ROM) Green River ore sample; selection of specimens sized 25 to 75 mm; imaging of the specimens by sensors based on X-ray transmission (XRT), color and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF); insolubles analysis of the specimens; and a bench-scale sorting test. Results of the study established that a correlation between the color of the individual ore particles and their insoluble content exists, and that a surface-detection-based sensor, particularly LIF, is apparently more suitable than XRT to produce a beneficiated trona stream. The bench-scale sorting test demonstrated that a 65 percent separation efficiency and a 70 percent recovery of trona could be achieved.

Greater awareness of the increasing need to develop supplementary energy sources is accelerating us towards many basic decisions regarding future utilization of mined energy materials -- uranium, coal, oil sands and oil shale. The latter material comprises a major potential source of oil which will require creation of unusually large and low-cost underground mining systems. In this paper, the author briefly outlines and analyzes several of the factors which continue to provide the somewhat unique character of oil shale nine planning and mine operation.

Ground falls in longwall gateroad entries remain a concern in modern longwall operations. The gateroads are subject to changing horizontal and vertical ground stress induced by longwall extraction. These stress changes can result in failure of the strata around an entry leading to large deformations of the entry roof, floor, and ribs. The gateroad support systems are required to control the failed strata while maintaining safe access to the longwall face and unimpeded ventilation. This paper presents research that was conducted to better understand the stability issues in gateroad excavations and to develop procedures for evaluating support and layout alternatives for longwall gateroads. Using the results of a field-monitoring program and numerical model analysis of case histories, a conceptual model of gateroad support needs was developed. The conceptual model formed the basis for developing a set of equations that can be used to estimate likely roof sag and support loading for given roof geology and longwall-induced loading conditions. The developed equations were used to compare predicted gateroad stability to field study results, showing satisfactory agreement. The calculation procedures are used to demonstrate their application in assessing support alternatives at a case study mine. It is concluded that the developed analysis procedures provide realistic assessments of likely ground stability and can be used to evaluate alternative gateroad support systems at operating longwall mines.

Minerals are certainly where they are found. The undemocratic distribution of the world's mineral wealth has created an incongruous inbalance: mineral-rich, scarcely populated countries supply highly-populated industrialised countries that in turn consume more minerals than they produce. This has been as much a generating force for colonisation, invasion, and war as religion, political ideals, or megalomania. The Industrial Revolution of the seventeenth century was born in Britain, a country with large domestic resources of coal, iron, lead, zinc, copper, tin, etc., as well as a large population. As consumption outstripped production imports filled the gap, particularly from its worldwide colonies. For example, when Canada was founded in 1867 more than 905 of its investments were British financed, and much of these were mineral-based. The British made similar investments in South East Asia, Australasia, the Caribbean, and elsewhere, as did the other industrialised Western European countries hungry for raw materials. Later the United States emerged as a leading industrial power, again due largely to its abundant natural resources. Consumption soon exceeded production and foreign sources were saught. American business went exploring abroad ant many a mineral resource was developed almost totally on the basis of the US market many .thousands of miles away. Closer to home, Canada was also an obvious target for the US with its rich mineral resource base, small population, and geographical juxtaposition, so much so that about the time of the 1914-18 War the US took over from Britain as the major investor in Canada, and this peaked in 1967 when the US accounted for 80% of the country's foreign investment. After the 1939-45 War Japan joined the ranks of the USA and Western Europe as industrialised powers, and they too searched the world for the deposits lacking in their homeland.

The alkaline hydrothermal processing of K-feldspar rocks in an autoclave can be a pathway to synthesize a potassium fertilizer for tropical soils that is potentially cheaper and more efficient than traditional potash (KCl). When K-feldspar undergoes hydrothermal alteration in the presence of calcium oxide (CaO), it generates a complex mixture of calcium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate (CASH) minerals that incorporate K atoms stochastically in their structure. These atoms are subsequently released, as shown in a test-tube leaching test, indicating a possible uptake by crops. The relationship between the processing temperature and time in the autoclave for the hydrothermal reaction and the resulting mineralogy and elemental release are only partially understood and are investigated in this study. Elucidating that relationship is the key requisite for subsequent techno-economic analysis, and ultimately for the development of a fertilizer that can be considered as a feasible alternative to KCl.

MinerSIM is an augmented reality system with integrated hypermedia that is suitable for training underground miners in the basics of using a jackleg drill to install rock bolts. While statistical evidence shows that rock bolting with such a drill has an inherent level of risk, it is conjectured that this can be mediated with adequate safety training outside of the actual mine environment using a variety of educational media including interactive three-dimensional images, games, animations, and videos to describe the mechanics of rock bolting and its principles. Ultimately, trainees will install rock bolts in an immersive environment mixed with real and virtual images generated via a gaming graphics engine. This paper will discuss considerations, implementation issues, and evaluation methodologies of the MinerSIM system.

Let me open my remarks this morning by stating how we as legislators and as natives of the western coal-producing states feel about our role in becoming one of the major producers of coal-related energy and chemical products is similar to the groom at his shotgun wedding. We are apprehensive, to say the least, as to the ultimate outcome. We do not have complete freedom of choice. It will certainly change our quality of life. We are concerned about the increase in population, but are realistic enough to recognize that we are forced to go through with the marriage. Other alternatives could be worse than the bride. Also, we were aware that this could occur, but we did not plan on it being this sudden. Or, put another way, we have two groups advising us that our choices are cattle or coal, food or fuel, pollution and people or pure air, wheat or gas, clean water or prosperity, noise or solitude.

"The Scale-Distance formula is one of the primary means of determining the maximum amount of explosives that can be safely detonated at one time by a single delay. This paper describes a method of applying the Scale-Distance formula to the entire mining area using gridded surfaces. Using this technique, the operator can better determine the economic impact of nearby structures on the mine plan. INTRODUCTION As the surface mining of coal and stone encroaches near populated areas, precautions must be taken to minimize blast vibration damage to protected structures. The common method employed to minimize vibration damage is not to reduce the total amount of explosive in the hole (which would negatively affect fragmentation), but rather to introduce delays to reduce the amount of explosive detonated at any point in time. The Scale-Distance formula, an industry-accepted standard, may be used to calculate the maximum weight of explosive that can be detonated at one time without damaging the structure. This information may then be used to determine the number of delays required for each hole. Detonators make up a large part of the cost of blasting. At roughly $15 per detonator an additional detonator in the hole can be significant. It is normal to set off hundreds of holes at in one shot. An additional detonator in each hole can cost additional thousands of dollars per shot. The number of detonators is also a function of the depth of the holes and the hole spacing. Being able to accurately forecast the economic impact of blasting near structures improves a company’s ability to make informed decisions on how to approach property owners. Operators basically have three options when dealing with property owners: 1. Buy the property and blast without restriction 2. Negotiate with property owner for a waiver to allow unrestricted blasting 3. Comply with the legal blasting restrictions This paper proposes a method for the engineer to forecast for all points in the proposed mining area the impact of nearby structures upon the blast design. Being able to create a contour map and ultimately estimate the number of delays required for the entire forecasted mining area, the engineer can create accurate economic forecasts of the cost of blasting. The objective is to reduce the level of uncertainty in the forecast of the blast component portion of the forecast."

The Disputes Potential Index (DPI) is a computer program designed to help team mem¬bers assess the likelihood of contract disputes on a construction project. The program's predictions are based on data from 159 construction projects that encompass a variety of public and private projects. The impact of three categories of project characteristics are included in the DPI program, specifically, people, process and project characteristics. Ultimately, DPI returns an overall project score that indicates the likelihood of exces¬sive contract disputes. The output of a DPI analysis can be used as part of a contract readiness review or to define the need for extraordinary dispute avoidance procedures. This paper examines the development of DPI and presents the results of DPI analyses on several tunneling projects.

Testing ores for heap leach operations traditionally follows a progression of bottle roll tests, bucket and column leach tests, and very expensive large field leach tests. Enough data is now available to streamline the procedures. Data from five different operations shows that recoveries from large field leach tests can be predicted from the bucket tests. Initial recovery times in large field leaches are longer than in bucket tests- a typical response is eight days versus twenty days to the same recovery percentage; but the ultimate percent recoveries (after 60 days) are normally very close. Methods of mining and stacking can radically affect recoveries from clay-rich ores. Leaching of uncrushed ores provides special testing problems, since accurate samples smaller than several tons cannot be taken.

"The ultimate objectives of the post-tensioned strands are to connect the precast segments into a ring and provide pre-stress in the tunnel circumference. The method involves inserting the strand through the preliminary embedded duct in the precast concrete segments and then tensioning the strand by jack and fastening it. The post-tensioned strand eliminates the necessity of bolt connections between the segments and may reduce the labor cost and increase speed of lining construction. Pre-stressing of the segmental lining reduces the steel reinforcement or fiber volume in precast segments and/or thickness of the precast segments which would result in reducing the manufacturing cost of them. Pre-stressing would reduce cracking and increase water tightness, and would provide smooth intrados due to eliminated bolt joints and pockets in the tunnel lining. Pre-stressing would increase resistance to internal pressures as well. Further, this system could work very well structurally in tunnels with squeezing rock or tunnels with high seismic loadings. INTRODUCTION OF THE METHODPost-tensioning is commonly used in the construction of bridges, large buildings, nuclear power stations, and water tanks but its utilization in tunnels is still in its infancy.The precast pre-stressed concrete segmental lining can be used for shield tunnels. It provides a reinforced lining ring by the following construction stages and as shown in Figure 1:1) Segments to be assembled by TBM to complete a full ring2) Steel strand to be inserted through embedded duct (sheath) within the segments3) The strand to be tensioned by Jack after anchorage of the other end4) The strand to be fastened after reaching required tension load5) The horizontal strands (if necessary) to be installed, tensioned and fastened6) The recesses and gap between strand and duct to be filled by groutingFurther, Figure 2 shows an unbonded post-tensioning strand model; Figure 3 shows an anchor sample (Xanchor); Figure 4 shows a duct (sheath) and anchor within reinforcement; Figure 5 depicts the posttensioning of a strand by jack; and Figure 6 is an image of the Midorigaoka Trunk line tunnel in Sagamihara, Japan which was constructed using this system."

Respirable coal mine dust (RCMD) is a complex mixture of carbonaceous and mineral particles with a variation in size and shape. Accumulation of RCMD in the lungs of underground coal miners results in severe respiratory damage and ultimately progressive pneumoconiosis known as the black lung disease. The occurrence of the black lung disease dropped to a low of 2.1% in 1990s but has increased to 3.1% in 2000s [1], prompting more research on coal mine dust mitigation. In addition to surveying the impact of new mining technologies on the size of generated dust and exposure measurement, a comprehensive characterization of physico-chemical properties of RCMD particles are essential for a better understanding of the adverse health effects of coal mine dust. Such vital factors include particle size, surface charge, morphology, composition, and agglomeration state. The respirable fraction of RCMD, has been designated as particles < 10 μm in diameter, and almost all studies on the RCMD toxicity have focused on micron-sized particles. However, recent toxicological studies have shown that nanoparticles (particles with one dimension less than 100 nm) can have a magnified toxicity compared to the larger particles with the same chemistry [2]. Nanoparticles have a much higher specific surface area compared to the same mass of larger particles and are thus more reactive. Most micron-size particles can be cleared by the body’s defense mechanism. However, inhaled nanoparticles can easily deposit in all regions of the respiratory tract and can translocate to vital organs. [2].

Coal is a low-cost and high-calorific-value fuel. The coal mining industry worldwide has been suffering from severe accidents due to coal dust explosion hazards since its inception. Statistically, it was observed that 12,489 fatalities had occurred in 104 reported mining accidents from coal dust explosions during 1900–2020. There are numerous methods for detection, prevention, and control of coal dust explosions in mines. The underground mining environment is unpredictable and has an array of variables. These undulating factors make it difficult to prevent or control the coal dust explosion hazard. However, coal mining is done aggressively throughout the world, especially in developing countries as coal is a major source of thermal energy used in power plants contributing to about 38% (IEA, (2019), World Energy Outlook, IEA, Paris https:// www. iea. org/ repor ts/ world- energy- outlo ok- 2019.) of world electricity. Worldwide, coal dust explosibility studies are carried out in experimental mines, laboratories, and simulations. The complexity, lack of proper infrastructure, and unavailability of laboratory equipment sometimes make it difficult to study coal dust explosibility. The authors have discussed in detail and proposed that the CFD modelling can be a viable option for studying and evaluating coal dust explosibility.

This study investigates the changes in seismic velocity of rockmass before and after three major seismic events to determine any potential identifiable precursory velocity changes associated with these events. Induced stress measurement is one of the challenging tasks in deep underground mining, with extreme impacts on the safety and stability of the mine. This study used p-wave passive seismic tomography to image the velocity redistribution within a rockmass, which can indicate induced stress level changes in the rockmass and detect the velocity changes that might precede a major seismic event or a rockburst. The ultimate goal of this research focus is to develop another tool for the deep-mining community that will help to increase safety and efficiency. For this purpose, the hypothesis of conventional mechanics, which implies induced stress at the hypocenter (as inferred by the p-wave velocity) increases until the seismic event occurs, is evaluated. It is found that the p-wave velocity did not increase at any of the three hypocenters prior to the seismic event occurring; however, the p-wave velocity did increase in the closest “zone center” for two of the three events.

Coal and rock pillar design is critical not only for mineral extraction but also for the safety of the mine operators. Pillar strength can be estimated through numerous empirical formulas that are available in the literature, which are typically based on a statistical analysis of case study data. The limitation of most of these equations is that they only considered the width to height ratio and in situ rock or coal strength for pillars in horizontal seams. The adoption of such equations to estimate pillar strength in inclined seams may overestimate the pillar strength and ultimately lead to a poor pillar design. This paper will discuss different techniques that can be used to estimate pillar strength in inclined seams as well as present preliminary modeling results for stress redistribution around inclined pillars. Factors in the parametric analysis include pillar shapes, geometry, and seam inclination.

Recent expansion programs have made the Yunkang underground coal mine the number one producer in Shenxi Province. The mine is the newest in the Datong Coal Administration, currently rated at around 3 Mt/a of coal. Located in the Wa Chushi mountain range about 23 km north of the city of Datong, the mine has undergone a series of expansion phases since startup in 1973. Initial design capacity was 1.5 Mt/a and ultimately, production will be brought to an estimated 7.0 Mt/a by 1985, according to mine superintendent Li Jia-zhi. How Coal Occurs The coal, Jurassic in age, occurs in three economically identifiable seams designated No. 2, 3, and 7. Seams are 100-250 m below the surface. Reserves from this economic zone were not quantified, but Superintendent Li indicated that there was enough mapped out to sustain the expanded production rate for over 20 years. Below the Jurassic coal is another possible economic zone, a Permocarboniferous coal lying 400-600 m below the surface. Little development drilling has been conducted to ascertain its potential. The Jurassic beds are relatively flat and coal quality is reportedly one of the best in China. Heat content of the coal runs around 33.5 MJ/kg and the ash content is less than 10%. In some areas, it is less than 7%. Coal preparation is simple and involves a washing and screening separation into four principal size fractions. Washed coal is stored in one of six storage silos, each with 4000-t capacity. Mining the No. 2 Seam Since startup, primary production has been derived from the No. 2 seam. The coal is relatively hard and is topped by a hard cement-like conglomerate. These factors, coupled with an average thickness between 4 to 6 m, precluded the use of conventional longwall techniques, according to mine engineers. "INTRODUCTION Beneficiation of ores and minerals in a concentrator plant requires a significant amount of water [1] for the grinding and particle separation processes; most of it ends up being recirculated for reuse, slurry pumps are used after crushing and grinding feeding the ore to a classifier to separate fine-grained material (less than 5 mm) from coarse-grained material requiring further grinding. The lower ore grades [2] in the past couple of decades have demanded an increase on power size and efficiency of process machines to maintain a competitive plant throughput; Hydro-cyclone feed pumps to control both under and over milling or grinding are not the exception; Fig. 1 shows a conventional drive train [3] comprising an (1) asynchronous motor (also known as squirrel cage induction motor = SCIM), a high speed coupling (2), a gear reducer (3) and a low speed coupling (4) attached to the shaft of the pump (5), to accommodate the motor rated speed (typically 1800 rpm) to the process requirements (in the range of 250 rpm to 350 rpm), requiring additional components related to the gearbox: instrumentation, maintenance, disposable lubricants and filters, spare parts, thus reduces the overall system efficiency ultimately reflected into CAPEX and OPEX.WHY VARIABLE SPEED DRIVES FOR CYCLONE FEED PUMPS Hydrocyclones or commonly referred as “cyclones” are one of the most important devices in the minerals industry [4]; almost universally used in close-circuit grinding because of their high capacity and relative efficiency, the evolution of Power Electronics made affordable the use of Medium Voltage - Variable Frequency Converters (VFC) for Cyclone Feed pumps in combination with induction motors larger than 500hp (373kW) to gain multiple benefits: - Soft start with minimum electrical utility disturbance = inrush current mitigation - Full Torque available at zero speed for overload startup with pulp solidification after long still stand periods, superior to any other reduced voltage starting method. - Optimum and constant pump speed (independent of the electrical network or load condition), compared to across the line SCIM operation - Flexible Motor Voltage and Speed regardless of the power distribution Voltage and Frequency - Improved Power Factor (close to unitary), over the entire operating speed range"

Contributions made by mining have played a much more significant role in the development of civilization than is generally conceded by historians or recognized by ordinary citizens. In modern society, mined products pervade all industry and the lives of all civilized people. Early man relied largely on stone and ceramics, and eventually metals, to fashion tools and weapons. Civilization was advanced by discoveries such as abundant supplies of high-quality flint in northern France and southern England and firesetting to break rock. Middle Eastern cultures flourished not only because of agriculture and trade, but also because of mineral-rich deposits nearby. The earliest miners date back perhaps to 300,000 BC; their quest was for nonmetallic minerals (chert, flint, obsidian) suitable for utensils and eventually for weapons. Other rocks and minerals (ceramics, clay, salt, meteoric iron) attracted the miners for jewelry, cosmetics, construction materials, food seasoning, and coinage. At first, their excavations were confined to the surface, either pits or placers. But by about 40,000 BC, mine workings had been extended underground as short adits or shafts, and by 8000 BC as elaborate interconnected openings 300 ft (90 m) in depth. Metallurgical separation of metals from their ores and their subsequent fabrication evolved gradually over the centuries, copper being the first liberated (c. 7000 BC) followed by lead, silver, gold, and iron. "On April 4, 2017, the largest earth-pressure-balance tunnel boring machine (TBM) ever built finally completed its 2.7-km (1.7-mile) journey beneath Seattle, WA, nearly four years after it began boring the SR-99 tunnel that will eventually replace Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct.By now, readers of this publication are familiar with the ordeal that began on Dec. 6, 2016, when the machine overheated and shut down. Until that point, the TBM, named Bertha, had grabbed headlines for being the largest in the world with a 17-m (57.6-ft) diameter face. But after the incident that stopped the progress, the headlines suddenly stopped focusing on the engineering marvel of the tunnel project and began asking what went wrong. Just 300 m (1,000 ft) into the tunneling journey the machine was stuck, unable to move forward and impossible to retract.The project’s contractors, Seattle Tunnel Partners,(STP JV) – a design-build consortium comprised of Dragados - USA, Tutor Perini, say a 20-cm (8-in.) steel well-casing buried in the path of the machine caused the problems that halted the TBM. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) disagrees, and the issue over who ultimately pays for the repairs is now with the courts.Eventually, engineers determined the best way to get Bertha back to work was to dig a 36-m (120-ft), deep concrete lined shaft pit in front of the machine and lift the 1.8-kt (2,000-st) cutterhead out for repairs. The repairs took two years but eventually the machine resumed mining in January 2016. In April 2017, the TBM finished building the tunnel, breaking through at the tunnel’s north end near Seattle’s Space Needle, with little to no ground surface movement measured on the entire alignment.While the cause of the TBM breakdown and who should pay for repairs was debated above ground, the work below ground continued. David Sowers, deputy program administrator, engineering and program management with WSDOT, told Mining Engineering during the 2017 Cutting Edge Conference in Seattle that in addition to the technical marvel that the tunnel became, the fact the parties involved were able to work through the unprecedented challenge is a great example of how to overcome challenges on massive projects."
