The Boliden Aitik concentrator in Sweden processes 2,000 tph of low grade copper ore. The plant consists of five grinding lines feeding four bulk flotation banks with a scavenger concentrate regrind mill, and a column cleaner circuit with a regrind mill. The authors installed a model-based expert, optimizing control system to maximize copper recovery in the bulk flotation circuit while maintaining an appropriate copper grade in the cleaner feed. The optimizing control system uses on-line assays and calculates and implements set points for cell pulp levels, air rates and reagent addition rates. It combines the power of a dynamic population balance model which estimates mineral liberation in each stream, an optimizer which computes appropriate set points and a rule-based module which implements the strategy. The benefits have been evaluated over three months. The model-based expert, optimizing control system generates a measurable increase in copper recovery, around 0.5 per cent and an optimized bulk concentrate grade. The need to maintain the optimizing control system and other practical aspects are discussed.

FirstMiss Gold installed a supervisory control system based on Pavilion Technology's Process Insights neural network software and Oil System's PI data historian. The primary goal of the system was to control the acid preconditioning circuit. However, our first successful control loop was on the limestone feed rate to the neutralization circuit. The information gained by modeling these circuits and the better control provided by the system has resulted in reagent savings of over $80,000 per month.

"The mines of the future present a host of challenges, which may appear exciting or daunting, depending on one’s perspective. Whether some sectors of the public recognize it or not, the demand for raw resources is not going away any time soon. In fact, it is rising, as the global population grows, urbanizes and attempts to steadily increase quality of life. Yet, at the same time that much of the highly developed world is calling for greener goods, reduced consumption and cleaner production, in other areas there are cries for clean water and sanitation, consistent energy supply, access to health care and education, personal security and support for basic human rights. The balancing act for sustainable development of our global society is, indeed, precarious and the mining community is a key player. Fortunately, many industry members have accepted this role and the responsibility to provide leadership and a solid foundation for progress. Looking ahead, we need new generations of leaders, including many mine engineers who are ready to tackle all sorts of complex problems.There are tremendous needs just for technological innovations. Increasingly tough deposits will require that the industry continues to expand scale toward “mega pits” and “super caves;” fully develop unconventional recovery techniques like in situ leaching and gasification or deep-sea extraction and seriously consider off-earth endeavors. Such work will take entirely autonomous equipment, novel separations, processing and recycling methods, and systems that can withstand extreme physical conditions, just to name a few. It will also take a level of systems integration never-before seen in the mining industry, complete with big data issues, sophisticated predecitve analytics and modeling efforts and cyber-security challenges.Moreover, increasingly complex environmental problems will require creative solutions. Addressing issues like pollution control across multiple media, emerging contaminants, optimal management of wastes, selective mining and shared use of resources between mine operations and surrounding communities and ecosystems are among the top priorities. Really, a complete paradigm shift must occur, such that the focus is on overall improvement of environmental conditions, rather than minimization of impacts. A similar shift will be required in the social realm. How can miners be safer and healthier on-site and off? How can the industry contribute to communities such that they are better off, now and longterm, for having a mine next door? How can artisanal mining practices be transformed to also contribute to sustainable development? How can the industry’s work be a factor in increasing economic and political stability? How can the public understanding of raw resources and the need for mining enterprises be improved?Given the coming challenges, there is no doubt that the mine engineers of the future will need highly diverse skillsets — meshing traditional and contemporary competencies to a degree not previously considered in mining, or most others fields. To be sure, the scope and scale of mining projects make them wholly different than most other engineering work, aside from perhaps the largest civil and urban development projects. While on-the-job experience will continue to be essential, formal education programs (i.e., at post-secondary institutions) must lay critical groundwork."

The past four years since the 2008 MINExpo have been a roller coaster ride for the mining industry, with highs and lows and everything in between. One of the natural consequences of this uncertainty has been a number of significant consolidations and mergers, and this trend has trickled down into the crushing industry. And while there have been some significant changes to this sector of the mining industry, many of the big players have weathered the storm. "It is the duty of the mine operator to ensure the mine environment is healthy and safe for the mine workers. For deep and hot underground mines, this requires maintaining adequate working temperatures by means of mitigating the heat load generated by strata, auto-compression, mining equipment, explosives, ground water, and human metabolism. The heat load is best reduced by minimizing the amount of heat transferred to the mine air from these sources and through the use of efficient ventilation with effective cooling systems. The heat emitted by mining equipment and vehicles contribute a significant proportion to the combined heat load of an underground mine. This is especially a problem for diesel equipment due to the fact that besides heat, a large amount of water vapor is produced, which increases the humidity in the production workings. Diesel engines have proven advantageous in recent history due to their high power output and reliability. However, as mines continue to become more mechanized and deeper the climatic problems introduced by elevated heat generation will continue to rise. With that, the issue of heat generated by diesel equipment must be addressed. The economic alternative for diesel engine equipment fleets in underground mines is the electric engine. Technological advances in battery technology, increased mechanical output and improved reliability have made the electric engine significantly more competitive in comparison to diesel engines. Because electric engines do not utilize internal combustion, the heat produced by them is significantly less than of the diesel engines. Battery powered mining equipment likewise eliminate diesel particulate matter (DPM) produced by diesel engines. Utilizing battery electric equipment in underground mines provides many advantages, such as: (a) reduced heat load, (b) healthier and safer environment for the mine workers, and (c) reduced mine operating costs due to lower ventilation requirements. This paper will highlight the health and cost benefits of using battery/electric fleets versus diesel fleets in deep and hot underground mines. The study analyzes simulations produced from thermodynamic ventilation models. Early simulations show significant cost reductions in terms of net present value (NPV) when comparing the air volume requirements for battery/electric equipment versus diesel powered equipment for the same production rate. INTRODUCTION The competitiveness of the world mineral market demands that mine operators continue to increase production and decrease costs as commodity prices fluctuate in often unplanned directions. This has forced underground mines to operate at deeper depths and to become more mechanized to remain competitive. Because of these changes, ventilation challenges have continued to increase as the mines combat an enlarged influx of contaminants such as heat and diesel particulate matter (DPM)."

The leaching of gold and silver by ammonium thiosulfate solutions in the presence of copper has been actively studied in recent years. Newmont Gold Company has successfully tested the ammonium thiosulfate for gold extraction following biooxidation pretreatment of low grade refractory carbonaceous/sulfidic ores. In this paper, the chemistry of the copper catalyzed leaching process is reviewed. Factors affecting both the leaching reactions and the stability of the lixiviants are reviewed and discussed from a solution chemistry perspective.

"“Industry 4.0” – “Mining 4.0” - perhaps you have already heard of these terms? These keywords signify the next stage of industrial production. The internet and production technologies are growing closer together. Machines can communicate with one another, wherever they may happen to be located. The “Internet of Things” is the appropriate term. But what does SAFETY 7.0 mean? It is both brand new and traditional at the same time. It also has to do with the success of companies, with efficient production. And yet there is a great deal more at stake. It has to do with our lives and our safety – the supreme commodity in this world. What exactly SAFETY 7.0 means, what the number 0 stands for and the meaning of the number 7, and what this all has to do with mining will be explained in the following article. Mining is a fascinating undertaking. Mining is indispensable for a country’s economic development, whatever that may concern: infrastructure, energy supplies or raw materials for industrial production. Mining has brought forth many technological developments and innovations that can currently be found in our daily lives. Mining is impressive, grandiose and repeatedly fascinates mankind with its immense dimensions. Miners throughout the world still work hard and, for this reason, are bound to one another in a special way. In mining, every man looks out for the other; you have to be able to rely on each other. That creates a strong bond. The other side of the coin is that mining and disasters belong to normality in the media and thus also in our perception. Accidents at work and even catastrophes occur in mining, quarries, or raw material operations almost on a daily basis somewhere in the world. They are often associated with extremely serious injuries, or even a fatal outcome, for the miners affected and, in turn, dramatic consequences for the families of those involved. It could be in China, India, Russia, or somewhere in Africa, Asia or America – it mostly does not happen in front of our door or in our neighbour- hood. Perhaps because of this in the daily concert of negative headlines, we do not register these catastrophes any more in our minds. We write them off under the heading “Nothing special”, since there are, day in day out, more terrible news items about wars, civil wars, famines, or ecological disasters. Things only really change if there is a dramatic number of deaths or when we are personally affected, close by in the vicinity, or can witness the rescue action live. A gold and silver open-pit mine located in northwestern Chile contracted ACZ in 1991-92 to assess the stability of their spent ore pile and to determine the cause and magnitude of cyanide contamination associated with leaching operations. The mine is a conventional open-pit located at an elevation of approximately 4,800 meters (m.) (15,744 feet). A spent ore pile is located approximately 2,000 m. southwest of the mine and approximately 1,000 m. northeast of the active pad and plant facilities. The pile was constructed on a gentle northwest slope dipping 12 to 13 degrees. The pile is bordered by a small river to the northwest and by a larger river to the northeast. Both rivers eventually flow into Bolivia. Heap leaching and processing commenced at the mine in 1988. Since 1988, nearly 6.0 million tons of ore at an average grade of 1.96 grams/ton (0.07 ounces/ton) of gold and 52 grams/ton (1.83 ounces/ton) of silver have been treated by cyanide heap leach methods with zinc (Merrill Crowe) precipitation. In approximately three years of operation, the mine has yielded more than 225,000 ounces of gold and over 1.5 million ounces of silver. Currently ore is agglomerated and hauled to the leach pad by truck and is top loaded to produce a 5-meter lift height. Four contiguous reusable (on/off) leaching pads were constructed with an asphalt layer above a carefully compacted sub-base of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) liner and screened fines. Leach solution of pH 10-11 containing 1.2 to 1.5 gram/liter of cyanide is applied to the heap at a rate of 10 liter/hour/square meter for a total active application period of 30 days. Leached (spent) ore is transferred to the spent ore pile located approximately 1,000 meters to the northeast. The pile currently contains approximately 6 million tons of spent ore. The pile liner, which has been constructed over a prepared sub-grade consists of three geosynthetic layers (geotextile/flexible membrane liner/geotextile). Long term objectives include washing the pile to recover an additional 3 to 4 percent gold and silver.

The Grasberg porphyry copper-gold deposit of Freeport Indonesia Inc., an 81% owned subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., lies within the Ertsberg Mineral District in central Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Grasberg deposit was discovered during a drilling campaign initiated in early 1988. Production at the open pit Grasberg deposit commenced in December 1989. The Grasberg copper-gold orebody is contained with a young igneous complex of dioritic composition which intrudes limestones of the Tertiary New Guinea Group. Alteration is typical of porphyry copper deposits worldwide except that higher grade primary chalcopyrite with significant gold values is associated with a centrally located zone of strong quartz stockwork.

"INTRODUCTION Ground support is a critical element in maintaining the stability of mining drives in deep and high stress mines. In challenging ground conditions, it is necessary to continuously explore ground support strategies that can control the resulting large deformations. It is an objective of mining operations to optimize the ground support by selecting both appropriate systems and the time of installation of each reinforcement element. A successful ground support strategy will result in the use of a system that ensures both the structural and operational integrity of the excavations and mitigates the need for rehabilitation. Preliminary ground support design is often based on empirical observations and methods. Once a design is implemented, field trials, observations and in situ pull tests are used to fine tune or improve the design. Although not often employed during this process, numerical modelling can provide helpful insights on the impact of different ground support strategies. In this respect, it is possible to explore the use of multiple options before selecting the most promising ground support system for implementation in field trials. The challenges associated with the numerical modelling of rock support for mines have been described by Lorig and Varona (2013) and Potvin (2017). The employed numerical models should capture all potential failure modes of reinforcement over the mining sequence of the excavation. In particular, it is important to emulate the observed in situ ground support performance, as well as the influence of the installation sequence of the support. However, the time and expertise required for this type of modelling of ground support is not often available at mine sites. Even when the expertise is available it requires a major time and commitment of resources to set up, run and calibrate the sophisticated models capable of explicitly capturing the behavior of ground support. Rock reinforcement is an integral part of all ground support systems used in underground mines. Long flexible tendons can reinforce the rock mass deeper into the walls and create a thicker reinforced shell around the underground excavation. This paper focuses on the optimization of the cable bolting strategy in squeezing conditions at the LaRonde Mine by integrating the 3D distinct element method (DEM) in the design process. A calibrated numerical model is used to investigate a series of cable bolt configurations and provide recommendations for the ground support design."

The installation of equipment and structures at mines often requires the evaluation of unique loading and operating conditions. Consideration of these unusual features is required throughout design and construction and into operation. The necessity for employing sound civil, structural and mechanical engineering techniques to the design of structures and equipment is well understood. However, the influence of geotechnical factors on the overall behavior during construction and operation of these facilities is less appreciated. Mine operators routinely perform exploratory drilling for the purposes of defining ore deposits. These exploration activities can be extensive and often include provisions for assessment of subsurface conditions as they relate to the mining operation, i.e., requirements for ground support. All of these factors are important to the economics of the mine and are well justified. Surface facilities are provided to access and service the mine and they play an important role in the successful development and operation of a project. Headframes, hoist foundations and shaft collars, in particular, are examples of unique installations encountered at underground mine sites. The design and above surface behavior of these facilities can be analyzed with the usual fundamental engineering practices employed throughout the engineering professions. This requirement during the project development is understood and adopted. Unfortunately, near surface exploration for the purposes of assessing soil and rock conditions for foundations are often given a reduced priority and less consideration. This paper is aimed at providing an outline into the benefits and importance of performing such explorations and to provide a brief discussion of the merits of such an approach. References in the paper relate particularly to shaft headframes, hoists and shaft collars but the issues raised apply equally well to other installations of a similar nature, e.g. milling equipment.

In any treatment process that requires a coarse feed material to be reduced to a fine size by crushing and/or grinding it must be determined whether a wet or dry comminution system should be utilized. All factors must be evaluated in reaching the decision. Among these factors are: 1) Ecology and Plant Environment: Unfortunately in many instances the decision on wet or dry is based on prejudice resulting from an unnecessary fear of dust. The writers submit that this fear, although once justified, is no longer valid because technology and equipment is now available to collect dust to meet any standard. When dry grinding is used it is very often possible to discard a portion of the waste product in a dry state. This will decrease the size of the tailing pond required. As pollution control standards increase it becomes increasingly difficult to clean up water from tailing ponds. 2) Operating Costs: Steel wear is often five or more times greater in wet grinding than in dry grinding. This is mainly due to corrosion. The evaluation of the economics of dry grinding must of course include the air system and dust collection; similarly in a wet grinding plant related pumping and material handling costs should be included. Pumping costs are often overlooked. This assumes water is made to flow for nothing. Pumping can account for 20 percent of the power consumption in the grinding plant. Large scale comparative tests were conducted in a wet and dry commercial plant in 1970. The same ore was used for both tests. With all factors included in both plants the dry system showed lower horsepower per ton.

"Minnesota has robust reclamation standards and have proven results in the taconite mining industry. Reclamation of overburden spoils, lean ore spoils and fine tailings from taconite production has generally been successful on the Iron Range, using a low input standard reclamation practice. Success at reestablishing vegetation on these landscapes is likely due to fairly favorable chemical and physical properties (e.g., few limitations due to acidic generating materials, metal toxicities and water and nutrient holding capacities). However, coarse tailings reclamation has proven more difficult, presumably due to lower nutrients and challenges with moisture holding capacities. Research efforts conducted since 1990 have struggled to develop a reclamation strategy for coarse tailings that meets the Minnesota Mineland Reclamation Rules, Chapter 6130. However, new breakthroughs in scram mining technologies are producing fine and coarse tailings that have not been encountered nor reclaimed in northern Minnesota. Scram mining in Minnesota is defined as those mining operations that produce natural iron ore concentrates. Innovative research is underway to investigate and determine successful reclamation strategies to reclaim scram mining tailings from these scram mining operations. The research program is conducted through collaboration with SEH, Prairie Restorations, Inc. (PRI) and Mining Resources, LLC with funding support from the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Laurentian Vision Partnership minescapes grant program.The research program was divided into three phases:Phase I. Bench-scale testing to identify successful treatments to reclaim and restore scram tailings through evaluating surface soils amendments, viable seed mixes and plant germination, growth and densities. Phase I was completed in early 2015.Phase II. Field-scale pilot trial to test larger scale effectiveness of the treatments deemed successful in Phase I and test various vegetative assemblages and planting techniques focused on the unique challenges with scram tailing basins. Phase II was completed in late 2016 with a summary monitoring report.Phase III. Produce a technical report of results for the research undertaken in this study, as well as compile prior reclamation results used during previous Minnesota iron mining reclamation projects on tailings basin applications. Phase III was completed in 2017 with a summary monitoring report and recommendations."

In a world of technology and electronic communication, it is easy to forget what engineers do best with a problem: sitting around a table, exchanging views and ideas with sketches and respecting everyone?s view. This was the approach adopted in the project to arrive at a solution for the cross passage opening sup-port for the Seattle University Link Extension. Schedule and space constraints usually impede concurrent cross passage excavation and tunnel boring machine (TBM) operation. And where the space is constrained, opening support solutions that maximize available cross sections are of great benefit. While there are a number of solutions that minimize space, some of these solutions can require expensive steelwork and extensive drilling and fixing. However, following a detailed round-the-table discussion of the options and constraints, it was identified that a shotcrete shell would not only limit obstruction of the space during installation, but also permit easy installation, particularly around services, and avoid costly steelwork and drilling and fixing.

A site characterization strategy formulated for the probabilistic design of underground structures is presented, which takes into account the variability of rock properties and the stochastic nature of the rock failure process. It entails determining probability distributions of rock properties by utilizing the theory of extremes and Monte Carlo simulation. Laboratory and field test data are analyzed and presented to illustrate the methodology. The results indicate that the distributive characteristics of rock mass properties can be estimated using empirical relationships currently available. This results of analyses can be incorporated into the design of underground structures, and then, the relative uncertainties of the failure probability of the structures can be assessed.

When Eugene Bailey asked me to contribute to this session on "Canadian exploration - 1976", it took a little coaxing before he got me to agree. My immediate reaction was, what could i say about Canadian exploration that already had not been said a hundred times in the past few years; secondly, why include a banking person in such a discussion? Everyone knows banks only come into the picture after the discovery has been made and feasibility well established and validated. Rather than wrestle with these misgivings, I decided to take the easy way out and go on blind faith in Eugene - that is, he asked me so he must think that I could come up with some useful thoughts and at least touch upon some of the pros and cons of exploration in Canada. The object of the whole exploration exercise is to Find economic deposits, once they are found, one cannot really move them elsewhere to mine them. It follows, therefore, that we should really be speaking about the pros and cons of mining In Canada and my treatise will eventually lean in this direction. In any event and before getting down to the pros and cons, let us take a quick look at the history of mineral resource development in our country since the end of world war II. At that time, we were producing well under one billion dollars worth of mineral products including hydrocarbons.

Any of you who served in the military remember the admoniton to "get the lead out," In the military environment, where cost wasn't always a factor, "get the lead out" was more often a call for activity of any sort than activity of a particularly productive nature. As a result, when the top sergeant yelled "get the lead out," lots of people started moving.. . usually to get out of his way. Now there's a new cry, ..one that comes not only from the military but from an entire nation threatened with dependence on foreign sources for its energy needs. That cry ...get the coal out, Like the earlier order, it's a call to activity. A signal that the coal reserves of the United States must be tapped so that Project Independence can succeed by 1985, But it's more than a mere call to activity; it's also a call to achieve productivity. ,a call to produce coal both efficiently and acceptably. And that leads us to the key questions of where the coal is going to come from to meet that 1985 goal, and how can it best be mined. Where will the coal come from? There's no doubt much of it must come from surface mining in the West. How can this coal be mined? There are several options available but there is an excellent case to be made for using mining shovels and haul trucks due to their versatility in stripping, loading and reclamation, We'll explore this approach in this talk today.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of a wet head continuous mining machine for reducing dust exposure for continuous miner operators. Wet head technology delivers water via sprays to the continuous miner's cutter head as opposed to traditional standard sprays located on the boom and body of the mining machine. The sprays, positioned directly behind each bit on the cutter head, deliver water at the point of attack, serving to cool the bits during mining to reduce the potential for frictional ignitions. The sprays also flood the coal with water to potentially suppress dust generation. Dust surveys were conducted at several mines to evaluate the wet head's effectiveness to control respirable dust exposure at the continuous miner operator location and in the immediate return. Results show that the wet head miner improved air quality at both locations to varying degrees in some cases and not in others when compared to a continuous miner with a standard spray system.

"Underground refuge alternatives require an air source to supply breathable air to the occupants. This requires pressure relief valves to prevent unsafe pressures from building up within the refuge alternative. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandates that pressure relief valves prevent pressure from exceeding 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure when a fan or compressor is used for the air supply. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a variety of pressure relief valves using an instrumented test fixture consisting of data acquisition equipment, a centrifugal blower, ductwork and various sensors to determine if the subject pressure relief valves meet the MSHA requirement. Relief pressures and flow characteristics, including opening pressure and flow rate, were measured for five different pressure relief valves under a variety of conditions. The subject pressure relief valves included two off-theshelf modified check valves, two check valves used in MSHA-approved built-in-place refuge alternatives, and a commercially available valve that was designed for a steel refuge alternative and is currently being used in some built-in-place refuge alternatives. The test results showed relief pressures ranging from 0.20 to 1.53 kPa (0.03 to 0.22 psi) and flow rates up to 19.3 m3/ min (683 scfm). As tested, some of the pressure relief valves did not meet the 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi) relief specification.IntroductionThe Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the United States in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement (U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, MSHA, 2006). Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR) mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency refuge alternatives and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such refuge alternatives can be either self-contained mobile units or built-inplace facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for MSHA approval of refuge alternatives and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the refuge alternatives. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe refuge alternative atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi), or at a pressure above mine atmospheric pressure, in the refuge alternative, as specified by the manufacturer when the breathable air is supplied by a fan or compressor (MSHA, 2008)."
